OYC Miami provides wrap-around services to bridge the socio-economic gaps for families in urban communities.

From the Beginning

OYC Miami, created in 2003 as the Overtown Youth Center, is a 501(c)3 organization founded by NBA Champion and Hall-of-Famer Alonzo Mourning and real estate developer Martin Z. Margulies. OYC Miami was created to serve as a safe haven for children living in Overtown and neighboring communities. Since its founding, OYC Miami has continuously provided holistic programming to erase generational cycles by providing the necessary resources to level the playing field for children, families and adults in our community. Devoted to offering resources and services that uplift and help those in the community, OYC Miami has been a positive instrument of change for legions of people.

OYC Miami offers programs and services for youth, adults and families in our community. As a year-round servicing agency, OYC Miami positively elevates people through educational, health and wellness, social, financial and career programs. Through a broad range of services, OYC Miami fosters hope, promotes lifelong learning and offers guidance and development, all while strengthening the entire community.

Aiming to promote success across future generations, OYC Miami provides programs that positively impact the trajectory of thousands of lives. OYC Miami maintains its commitment to strengthening communities by serving as a bridge; and bringing together the elements and resources people need to thrive. Through our innovative educational and 365-degree servicing approach, OYC Miami offers tools that gives individuals the chance to flourish in life.

OYC Miami offers comprehensive in-school, aferschool and summer program services. The program focuses on academic achievement, attendance and behaviors, as well as character education and self motivation.

HONEY SHINE

Honey shine, a program of OYC Miami, is an all-girls mentoring and empowerment program for girls ages 5-18 founded by Tracy Wilson Mourning in 2002.

Aspire to Shine WORKSHOPS Camp Honey Shine Mentoring

The program aims to expose girls from underserved communities to healthy lifestyles and encourages the balancing of mind, body and soul.

Program services include afterschool programming, “Aspire to Shine” empowerment workshops, and Camp Honey Shine during the summer.

Honey Shine is committed to bridging academic, social, emotional, and health gaps through interactive, academic and enrichment services.

Mentoring - Mentors share their personal and professional experience with the Honey Bugs and help guide them to a healthy and happy future. Through the expert contributions of mentors, girls work on personal development goals, skills and behaviors they want to learn.

Sisterhood - Each workshop demonstrates the commonality that exists between all of us. Activities focus on fostering positive relationships, bonding, building trust and honoring each other.

Journaling - Honey Shine provides a safe space for self-expression. Honey Bugs end program sessions by writing out their thoughts and ideas on different chosen topics as well as the opportunity to write freely and openly about areas of self-interest. It is important that girls understand how to use their voice.

Empowerment - The program encourages Honey Bugs to break through stereotypes and helps them visualize their place in society as strong leaders.

Inspiration - Honey Shine mentors provide guidance and nurturing experiences to Honey Bugs ages 5 to 25. Honey Shine offers a safe haven for young women throughout our community, giving them the support, guidance, and encouragement. Our mentors share wisdom and experiences as a tool to inspire and guide Honey Bugs to achieve their full potential and accomplish their goals.

TEACHING AND LEARNING - fosters intellectual and educational development.

HEALTH AND SPORTS - promotes physical wellness, fitness and sports.

EDUCATIONAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL - focuses on emotional health and psychological factors.

EXPOSURE - focuses on providing students with opportunities to explore ideas, careers, talents and life options.

HOW CAN I JOIN YOUR PROGRAM?

Youth are referred by community partner organizations and school personnel who identify that OYC Miami's program support is needed. Youth are also referred by partner community organizations and school personnel.

Families, parents or adult community members seeking support services may inquire about program offerings through OYC Miami’s Eden Place.

WHAT IS YOUR PROGRAM COST?

Program services are offered at NO cost.

HOW IS OYC FUNDED?

OYC Miami receives support from federal, state and local grants, individual and corporate contributions, and foundation giving. If you are interested in donating visit www.OYCMiami.org

WHO IS YOUR TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC?

OYC Miami welcomes youth in kindergarten through 12th grade who are enrolled in OYC's 14 partner schools and/or are residents of Overtown and surrounding communities.
