In the timeless words of Mahatma Gandhi, "Where there is love, there is life." As we embark on this new year, our hearts resonate with the profound echoes of agape—the highest form of love, infusing positive energy into the tapestry of weddings and the lives touched by them. Love, in its purest essence, is a joyous simplicity to celebrate. However, the orchestration of weddings demands countless hours of meticulous planning, transforming the dreams of couples into the grand spectacle of their lives. One delightful revelation has been the exploration of new traditions, such as the post-ceremonial dinners that grace the newlyweds with moments of intimate connection. Step into the embrace of the recently refurbished Oliver Hotel—an oasis that beckons you to kick back and immerse yourself in its opulent ambiance. With sumptuous rooms, culinary maestro Joel Miller, and the allure of a new, swanky speakeasy named "Nightbird," this haven is poised to become Oxford's latest heartbeat. Journey with Zoe Fitch as she unveils the vibrant and modern ceramics of Rosa Salas, a beacon of artistic brilliance hailing from Venezuela and gracing the halls of Ole Miss. Salas, an artist who discovered her passion in the crucible of the university's arts program, crafts pieces that transcend the tangible, weaving threads that bind people together. Her creations, both descriptive and alluring, promise to kindle a desire for more. Zoe guides us further into the artistic realm, this time exploring the work of Bradley Gordon, a soul rooted in the Mississippi Delta. Gordon, a maestro in conjuring beauty from the void, carried the echoes of his creative mind across countries like Japan and Taiwan before returning to Mississippi. His gallery, an ode to Mississippi's wildlife, landscapes, and the imprints of global sojourns, stands as a testament to the boundless spirit of creation. As you immerse yourself in the following pages, let the essence of love envelop you with the spirit of Valentine's Day—a celebration that extends its embrace to all.

Y

Y’all, Oxford, MS is blooming like a sunflower in summertime! This sweet town is Mississippi’s hottest spot for football fanatics, friend getaways, weddings, or even a cozy staycation. And guess what? There’s a shiny new hotel in town! The newly refurbished Oliver Hotel is the crown jewel of the Oxford square, marking a fresh start for this beloved corner of our Oxford, MS world. This spot has been a busy hub for businesses over the years! Once upon a time, in the land of the 90s, there was a spot called Four Corners. It was home to a gas station that was always playing second fiddle to its rival, the legendary “Chicken on a Stick” joint across the street owned by Chevron. Later, it had a flirtation with a Checkers Drive-Inn before getting bulldozed down to make way for the swanky Chancellor’s House Hotel. That’s what it was called for six years, at least! Picture this: Nashville’s charming Oliver Hospitality swept into Oxford and gave it a fancy makeover! The Oxford

property was snatched up in a jiffy back in April 2022, and since then, the South Lamar and University Avenue corner has been shimmering with a fresh new look. This beauty is named after its big sister, The Oliver Hotel in Knoxville, TN, established over a decade ago. The lobby is the real stunner here - a modern take on Southern hospitality that’ll make you feel like you’re on cloud nine. Inside, you’ll get a load of the eclectic design that’ll have you feeling right at home. Mel & Co Interior Architecture Design Studio worked their magic, sticking to the original architecture but jazzing it up with Schumacher wallpaper and fabrics and rich colors that’ll make you want to kick back and soak in the luxurious vibes. Attention, foodies and cocktail lovers! The new Oxford hotspot, Kingswood, is the place to be for lunch, dinner, and signature drinks. Their patio and indoor dining areas are a perfect representation of the city’s vibe. And guess what? The culinary genius Joel Miller, former chef

and owner of Ravine, is in charge of the kitchen. His farm-to-table creations are so finger-licking good, you’ll want to make a reservation right away. But wait, there’s more! Once you’re done with your meal, sneak into the newly opened speakeasy, Nightbird. This place is dripping with coolness, but you might need a treasure map to find the hidden entrance. Behind the walls adorned with Schumacher Le Grand Tour wallpaper lies a world of Granatapple Schumacher wallpaper, splashed with yellow and orange pomegranates, and the Pantone color of the year 2024, peach fuzz! The luxurious textures and fabrics make this place a paradise for the senses. And if you’re not ready to leave, don’t worry, there’s more in store. They’re planning to expand to the rooftop for an even more magnificent view of the sunset over Oxford. And hey, if you’re looking for a spot to throw a party or reception, Nightbird has got you covered. Oh, the many faces of this stunning

BOOKS FOR January/February Recommended by

Maya Martin and Cody Morrison, Square Books Mostly What God Does by Savannah Guthrie In her first trade book, Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Award recipient, Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of the TODAY show, shares reflections on faith and life and offers inspiration for all of us to do what God does--love. Guthrie turns her journalistic eye toward the power of faith in everyday life. Using personal stories of motherhood, love, her career, being a daughter, grief, and even the mundane moments that have shaped her faith, she illustrates the profound role that belief in God has in helping us find real hope in this life.

Cold Victory by Karl Marlantes From New York Times bestselling author Karl Marlantes comes a propulsive and sweeping novel in which loyalty, friendship, and love are put to the ultimate test. Helsinki, 1947. Finland teeters between the Soviet Union and the West. Everyone is being watched. A wrong look or a wrong word could end in catastrophe. Natalya Bobrova, from Russia, and Louise Koski, from the United States, are young wives of their country's military attaches. When they meet at an embassy party, their husbands, Arnie and Mikhail, both world-class skiers, drunkenly challenge each other to a friendly - but secret cross-country wilderness race. Natalya is worried, Louise is excited. The outcome of this race could change their future for the better or worse.

The Waters by Bonnie Jo Campbell A master of rural noir returns with a fierce, mesmerizing novel about exceptional women and the soul of a small town. On an island in the Great Massasauga Swamp—an area known as “The Waters” to the residents of nearby Whiteheart, Michigan—herbalist and eccentric Hermine “Herself” Zook has healed the local women of their ailments for generations. As stubborn as her tonics

are powerful, Herself inspires reverence and fear in the people of Whiteheart, and even in her own three estranged daughters. The youngest—the beautiful, inscrutable, and lazy Rose Thorn—has left her own daughter, eleven-year-old Dorothy “Donkey” Zook, to grow up wild. Donkey spends her days searching for truths in the lush landscape and in her math books, waiting for her wayward mother and longing for a father, unaware that family secrets, passionate love, and violent men will flood through the swamp and upend her idyllic childhood.

Medgar and Myrlie by Joy-Ann Reid The host of MSNBC’s The ReidOut and New York Times bestselling author of The Man Who Sold America traces the extraordinary lives and legacy of civil rights icons Medgar and Myrlie Evers, situating Medgar Evers’s assassination as a catalyzing moment in American history. Myrlie Louise Beasley met Medgar Evers on her first day of college. They fell in love at first sight, married just one year later, and Myrlie left school to focus on their growing family. Medgar became the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP, charged with beating back the most intractable and violent resistance to black voting rights in the country. Myrlie served as Medgar’s secretary and confidant, working hand in hand with him as they struggled against public accommodations and school segregation, lynching, violence, and sheer despair within their state’s “black belt.” On June 12, 1963, Medgar Evers became the highest profile victim of Klan-related assassination of a black civil rights leader at that time; gunned down in the couple’s driveway in Jackson. In the wake of his tragic death, Myrlie carried on their civil rights legacy; writing a book about Medgar’s fight, trying to win a congressional seat, and becoming a leader of the NAACP in her own right.

Eli Harpo’s Adventures to the Afterlife by Eric Schlich Award-winning author Eric Schlich’s Eli Harpo’s Adventure to the Afterlife is an accessible and big-hearted novel that explores belief and forgiveness as a boy grapples with his faith and sexuality on a rollicking family road trip to Bible World. When Eli Harpo was four, he underwent emergency open-heart surgery, flatlined on the operating table, and for a brief time, went to heaven and met Jesus. Or at least that’s what his father, a loving but devout Baptist minister, has raised him to believe.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR

Q&A with Shell Laser MedSpa Dr. Dan Shell

Face Forward Advice on looking your best on your special day Q: What skin care services would you recommend for brides who want to look their best on their wedding day? Starting an effective medical grade skincare regimen several weeks before a bride’s big day is the first step in making sure she will look radiant on her big day. A

OxfordMag.com 17

OXMJanFeb2.indd 17

1/5/24 3:29 PM

professional facial like a HydraFacial is another way that a bride can make sure her skin stays in optimal condition. Q: Is there an optimal time prior to the wedding for a facial, lip injections and other med spa services? Shell Laser MedSpa offers recommends scheduling an appointment about six months before the wedding day to be sure we address any concerns and/or meet the expectations that the bride has to prepare for her big day. We offer complimentary skincare consultations at the bride’s convenience. Depending on the services needed to achieve desired results there could be a little bit of downtime. Some treatments such as microneedling, a laser

treatment, or an injection may require a few days of more of downtime before the optimal results are visible. Dr Shell recommends Botox 3 weeks or so prior to the big event. Q:What is the advantage of having MedSpa services in a practice owned by a plastic surgeon? Dan H. Shell IV, M.D., FACS is board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery, and a member of The American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He has been in practice for over fifteen years and has spent a considerable amount of time researching the safest and most effective treatments before offering them to his patients. Critical evaluation of a product or treatment by an experienced

and board certified Plastic surgeon is critical to ensuring a safe and desirable outcome. Dr. Shell only use injectables such as Botox from companies like Allergan whom we trust. It is important to distinguish the difference between cost and value when choosing a service. Patients should be very skeptical when a procedure or treatment that is offered at a low cost. It is important to ask questions such as : 1) Is the product being used from a legitimate source ? 2) How much experience does the person administering the procedure have? 3) What are the expected outcomes and if I have concerns will someone be available to address them? Q: Do you see whole bridal parties book sessions at the

MedSpa so they look their best? Our MedSpa services are customized for each individual patient. A bridal party may make appointments to come in on the same day but the treatment may not necessarily be the same for each patient. Each of our skincare regimens and treatments are based upon skin type and concerns of each client. Q: For the mother of the bride, what kind of med spa services are most popular? The mother of the bride most routinely chooses a HydraFacial, microneedling treatments such as SkinPen, or a resurfacing laser treatment to address fine lines and wrinkles. Botox and fillers are very popular as well.

Sanctuary Arts Festival Featured Artist 2023-2024 Rosa Salas: Venezuela in the ‘Sip BY ZOE FITCH PHOTOS SUBMITTED

20 January/February 2023

OXMJanFeb2.indd 20

1/5/24 3:29 PM

M

Mississippi is home to many including those who were not born here. The ‘Sip is a place that is home to all. Though the hospitality state has a long history, both positive and negative, there is still room to grow and blank canvas to compose something new. The sense of home is largely connected to place. This connection is specific to southerners but is an objective human experience. As an artist, “place” is influential in finding one’s identity and message in their work. The future of our state includes a continuous flourishing art community that welcomes open conversation and new ideas. The arts here range anywhere from music to painting, from sculpture to fiber art, and from dance to ceramics. And the artists are from Mississippi and other countries such as Venezuela. Rosa Salas is from Venezuela and moved to Oxford, Mississippi to further her education. She first pursued her Bachelor of Arts, then the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in ceramics. Once graduating in her home country and taking a gap year Salas made her move to the American Southeast after learning about the program from a friend that attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). When Salas first entered the program she actually did not have her sights specifically on pottery but visual arts and history in general. She then fell in love with the medium of ceramics after taking her first class in Meek Hall. Salas describes her style as outspoken, vibrant, and sunny. Being born and raised in a very visually vibrant, as well as culturally sirited, has influenced Salas’s aesthetic and palette used in her artwork. Salas says, “[the] colors should be in your face”. She is influenced by artists such as Betty Woodman (American ceramicist) and Elizabeth Murray (American painter),

as well as traditional Mayan pottery forms such as tripod feet. Ceramics is a community-driven medium. As Salas recalls, pottery is like a festival. Eating and sharing dishes and meals with others brings artists together to learn and share with one another. This idea is at the very core of pottery. Historically pottery was used for utilitarian purposes while styles, decorations, and colors were added to reflect the artist and cultural expression. Utility in her pottery is the intention and interaction is encouraged, while the forms still carry a sculptural visual aesthetic. Salas refers to kinetic art, art that offers the illusion of movement, in her research. This movement gives life to the forms and reflects the liveliness that is in the process

of making the work as well. Every step of the process involves human interaction whether it is mixing large amounts of clay, building or throwing the forms in communal studios, learning from mentors and each other, or attending the culminating kiln-firing parties. This medium is like no other in the world of fine art. There is no other medium that is so reliant and reflective of human culture because it is the only one that benefits more from the human-to-human experience rather than a singular one. While single human reflection has historically made notorious fine art, pottery creates a home and art that is multipurpose. And though Salas is a long way from her home in Venezuela, she has found a new one building pottery in the ‘Sip.

Sanctuary Arts Festival Featured Artist 2023-2024 Bradley Gordon: Art is Reflective of Home BY ZOE FITCH PHOTOS SUBMITTED

22 January/February 2023

OXMJanFeb2.indd 22

1/5/24 3:29 PM

M

In the South the land, wildlife, flora, and way of life find their way into the creative space. An artist finds inspiration in the small things; a place you’ve been many times before but see it in a new way, viewing an animal in the wild at an unusual time, or finding an old tool that sparks nostalgia in your mind. Place is an anchor in creativity. Place is where discovery is made and identity is created, creativity is fueled and one connects soul to land. And sometimes no matter how far you go, your “place” is always home. Bradley Gordon is from Clarksdale, Mississippi, one could say the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Gordon spent his childhood in the Bayou which became his playground. He grew up on his family’s farm playing outside and finding materials for his creations. He recalls constantly having access to a multitude of tools, so he was always building things. It is no wonder Gordon became a career artist when you hear how he speaks of growing up playing on a cotton trailer and making something out of nothing for the pure joy of it. In the South there is a saying, “You have to laugh to keep from crying”. And, also in this region, sometimes you have to make something out of nothing to feed the creative mind. While Gordon’s attraction to fine art came about organically, promoted by his intuition to make things out of materials that he had access to, this extended into his desire to further his knowledge of fine art. He attended Delta State University in Cleveland, MS for photography. After graduating from Delta State University Gordon

attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) for art education. He later went into teaching to share his knowledge of the craft. After his time in the Delta Gordon had the opportunity to travel to multiple countries all over the world including Japan and Taiwan, a bucket list goal for most. He accomplished this goal and brought his experiences, knowledge, and inspiration home to Mississippi with him. After moving home to Clarksdale, MS he opened a gallery. He notes that his gallery in Clarksdale allowed him to get on his feet, so to say, as an artist. Gordon’s success grew, and he and his family decided to move north to Oxford, MS to raise their family and continue their professional lives. He now lives and works in Oxford where he is an active member of the community and continues to paint his artwork based on Mississippi’s wildlife and landscape. His home and studio are located right off the Oxford Square, the heart of the town. While Gordon draws inspiration from multiple experiences and places in his life, the throughline in his work is home.

Home means to Gordon painting what he knows, and this inspires his compositions and the overall feeling of his artwork. Gordon says that though he uses multiple mediums including paint they all reflect home and Mississippi. Every aspect of his process is reflective of this concept including his studio helper, his daughter. Home is a broad term, but when place is your identity and you paint what you know the canvas becomes a mirror to your environment. Gordon’s wildlife and landscape paintings are vibrantly colored and use bright and dark contrasts to pull the viewer in. He implements a unique hand in the painting where the texture and pattern are discovered as one moves closer (fig.1). Looking closely provides an experience in its own right, but moving outward the paintings introduces an experience like no other. The lively depictions of the American South provide new life to a very old, historical, and traditional region. Though the artist lives and primarily works in Oxford, his Water Valley, MS gallery is always open. Gordon’s artwork has been

welcomed and embraced by Mississippians and southerners alike because even though there is a modern aesthetic, a very recognizable spirit emerges through the acrylic paint. He presents a modern take on a familiar scene that is appreciated and encouraged. Southerners are ultra connected to land and the organisms that call it home. There is a spiritual connection to being a southerner, and some would argue that this is heightened in Mississippi. In the South the landscape and time move constantly through and within one another like shifting planes. There is just something about going to your family’s farm and welcoming discovery of the most benign things. The smallest findings can hold the most weight, especially as a visual artist. Perhaps this is the inspiration to use every material to its fullest potential or to be less wasteful. Simply using a scrap material or finding a herd of caterpillars right before the first day of Summer can inspire your own creation. Place is influential not just on way of life and outlook, but offers a lens to view the creative realm. Bradley Gordon is an “artist-asobserver” artist. By this I mean, he recreates what he knows, and he knows deeply what he paints. Gordon is inspired by his home, where he is from, his travels, and his southern way of life. While he is a cosmopolitan person, Gordon’s roots find their way into the threads of his canvas and are stimulated by the fibers of his brush. His large paintings envelope the viewer and offer an insight into his modern take on an old world, Gordon’s world, his home, Mississippi.

MUSIC FOR INTIMATE OCCASIONS The Harrington-Holman Duo lights up local gatherings BY DAVIS COEN PHOTOS SUBMITTED 24 January/February 2023

Oxford acoustic guitar & vocal duo Lee Harrington and Emily Holman get most of their gig offers through word of mouth. This tends to bring about more interesting and intimate occasions than if they were inclined to play at just bar venues. “I don’t have the time these days to walk around the Square knocking on doors,” Harrington joked. The Harrington-Holman Duo began drawing some local attention to their act in 2019, when they were doing frequent performances at the centrally located Chancellor’s House Hotel, on the corner of South Lamar Blvd. and University Ave. The duo got booked to play on Fridays before Ole Miss Football games, then soon became one of the more sought-after cover acts in town. Their regular performances at Chancellor’s House (which has recently made cosmetic changes and been renamed The Oliver Hotel) came from an opportunity they had one day to show their talents, at a dedication party in the hotel’s large event

room. They were asked to play the popular hit “Shallow” from the film “A Star is Born,” and hotel management happened to be on hand to witness the terrific impromptu performance. “Emily has a fantastic voice, and she could pull off the Lady Gaga part of it,” said Harrington. “We were just kind of having fun with it - but the girls loved it!” The duo, who have known each other since freshman year at Ole Miss, when Emily was dating Harrington’s roommate and still-best friend Kevin, have been performing together in the MidSouth for over a decade. Before breaking ground in Oxford five years ago, they played numerous gigs in both the Jackson, MS, and Memphis areas. Harrington notably was also part of another popular local group Trowbridge & Harrington, who played frequently at Syd & Harry’s back in the day. The Harrington-Holman Duo took on somewhat of a musical residency at

Chancellor’s House in late 2018, and their frequent evening appearances continued until the pandemic took hold in early 2020. Harrington described that the shows started to become a reunion destination for friends from their college days, who enjoyed stopping by to reconnect while also enjoying good music. “It became a gathering place, and we just happened to be the ‘cherry on top,’” he said. The duo has been asked to take part in a number of weddings, but typically their role is playing at the rehearsal dinners, which are slightly better suited for their acoustic guitar & vocal harmony-based music. Harrington remarked that he and Holman have played at wedding receptions as well as rehearsal dinners, but that receptions tend to be more of a “dance band kind of thing.” The duo has also performed what Harrington calls the “special music” at the wedding, which will lean more towards the sentimental selections. In recent years, the Harrington-Holman

Duo’s go-to song during tender moments of a wedding has been Bob Dylan’s 1997 deep track “Make You Feel My Love,” which resurged after pop singer Adele released a rendition on her debut album. The duo also enjoys performing songs recorded by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, who released a pair of seminal rock & country-tinged albums in the 2000s. The multi-Grammy winners’ meld of rock/country and male-female vocal harmonies hit home for the duo. “We love harmony,” he said. “The main focus of what we really do is harmony.” Harrington remarked that he and Holman found a certain kindred spirit in the chemistry that Plant and Krauss had on their albums. Holman’s voice is also showcased on a handful of Fleetwood Mac songs, particularly those featuring singer Stevie Nicks, like “Landslide” and “Dreams.” Harrington mentioned that Holman also sings a fantastic rendition of “Rhiannon,” although chooses not to

sing it in certain settings - because Nicks’ song was about a woman from a novel that she read who gets possessed by a witch. Other known artists in their set include Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Simon & Garfunkel, and Carole King. They’ve also found “Gasoline and Matches” by Buddy and Julie Miller to be a time-tested and good fit. In February, the duo celebrated the 60th anniversary of The Beatles’ appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show by performing a set of the British rock band’s music at the Penny Bar, located below Moe’s BBQ right off the Square. Harrington has been a lifelong fan of The Beatles and was excited to adapt the Harrington-Holman Duo’s sound to the band’s famous harmonies. He recalled growing up and sitting in front of a record player, learning Beatles songs with his brother, and said he always had a soft spot for George Harrison’s original songs. “It’s funny how ‘Here Comes The Sun’ and ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ are in their top songs on Spotify,” said Harrington.

HOW TO CELEBRATE YOUR

WITH TRADITIONAL GIFTS E STAFF REPORT

very year of marriage is a milestone to celebrate, and there are special gifts that correspond to each anniversary. These gifts have a long history and symbolism, dating back to the Victorian era or even earlier. Whether you want to follow the traditional or modern themes, or mix and match them, here are some ideas to inspire you for your next anniversary celebration.

FIRST ANNIVERSARY: PAPER

Paper represents the first year of marriage because it symbolizes a blank page, ready to be filled with your memories and stories. Paper also signifies the fragility and strength of your relationship, as it can be easily torn but also holds together when folded or glued. Some paper gift ideas are: A personalized photo book or calendar with your favorite pictures from your first year of marriage. A journal or scrapbook where you can write down your thoughts, feelings, and plans for the future. A love letter or poem expressing your gratitude and affection for your spouse. Tickets to a concert, movie, or show that you both enjoy. A subscription to a magazine or newspaper that interests your spouse. If you want to follow the modern theme, the first anniversary gift is a clock. This symbolizes the time you have spent together and the time you have ahead of you. You can give your spouse a watch, a wall clock, or a personalized clock with your wedding date or a meaningful message.

SECOND ANNIVERSARY: COTTON

Walt proposed on his family’s farm outside Greenwood, MS in Minter City, MS. Walt told me he needed to stop by the farm to grab a “weed eater” for his dad on the way to dinner. He pulled over at a secluded meadow on the farm and got

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DRESS

My Wedding Dress is a strapless sweetheart neckline and ballgown silhouette. The fabric for the entire dress is very delicate handmade lace. I fell in love with the antique look of the lace and the princess ball gown felt very fitting for me. I purchased it from The Bridal Path in Madison, MS.

Rea said he wanted to go check out Phi Mu Fountain because there was an engraving of a former Southern Miss SAE (Reagan’s school and fraternity) and an Ole Miss Phi Mu (my school and sorority) who had donated money to the fountain. Little did I know, my sister was hiding in the bushes at Bondurant Hall and captured Reagan getting down on one knee and asking me to marry him in front of Phi Mu Fountain. The Paris-Yates Chapel bells rang and I was just so excited - I couldn’t stop smiling! It was a surprise because I didn’t think we would be engaged until later

that spring. We went to dinner at Oxford Grillehouse afterwards and then met up with friends and family at the Coop for cake and drinks and to celebrate my birthday and our engagement! Describe your Wedding Dress My dress truly felt like Hollywood glam meets Cinderella. I felt like a princess, but also timeless!

My custom toile tablecloths that featured places that were and still are special to Reagan and I. My mom had the pattern made into fabric for a couple of table cloths at the wedding. She also made sure we were given the extra fabric to be made into pillows and other accents for our home.

CHRISTY DEARIE JARED FARLOW TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL

While on a beach vacation on 30A, Jared popped the question! Jared took me to my favorite restaurant in Alys beach and asked if I’d go watch the sunset with him afterwards. It was so beautiful on the beach and while I thought in my head how perfect of a time it would be for him to propose, I didn’t think it was going to happen then. Jared caught me by surprise when he pulled out my dreaming and asked me to marry him! It was the perfect moment!

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DRESS

I got my wedding dress from

Grace Loves Lace in Nashville, TN. After trying on what felt like hundreds of dresses, I instantly knew this dress was the one when I tried it on. It was elegant, stunning, and felt like it was made for me. The fabric was made out of a stretch crepe material, which made the dress super comfortable. At the end of the night, I changed into a gorgeous sparkly wedding dress from Olivia Bottega.

We met at our high school, Kirk Academy in 2018 when I was a sophomore and he was a junior. We didn’t start dating until college though!

TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL

Last November, Jake drove me to my parents house for a dinner we had planned for that evening. When we pulled up, he took the road out to my dad’s shop instead of the driveway. Behind the shop, there was an arch that was lit up with candles. It was perfect!

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DRESS

I loved my dress!! It was a ballgown fit with lots of tulle. It had tiny pearls sewn into the bodice to match the pearls on my veil!

My favorite moment definitely was immediately after the ceremony when I finally got to hug Jake and just take it all in with him for the first time because we chose not to do a first look.

GARROW MILES CONNOR MCKAY HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met at the first wedding I did flowers for in my home town, Union City, TN. Back story, I started my own flower business while in college, Garrow’s Garden. The wedding I did flowers for happened to be Connor’s distant cousin’s wedding. We met at the reception.

TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL

Connor proposed to me in Sea Island, GA at the Cloister under the oak trees. It was the most beautiful scenery. It was the same place he asked me to be his girlfriend.

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DRESS

My wedding had three different venues and I wanted each dress to echo the surroundings and feel of each one. Therefore, I had three dresses. My ceremony dress was simple and understated to go along with the simplicity and elegance of the chapel. My reception dress had a petal applique from head to toe. This was perfect considering I had a flower feature that rained Calla Lilies from the ceiling to floor. The third dress was decked with beads that would flow with movement. It was the perfect party dress for the after party and DJ.

WHAT YOU’RE DOING NOW

KARA COOK FORD GORDON HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Ford and I met through mutual friends in the seventh grade, and we were friends for a few years before we started dating in the fall of our sophomore year of high school.

FAVORITE MOMENT FROM YOUR BIG DAY

Ford and I both felt that our ceremony was really special, and we are thankful for that because we knew it was the most important part of the day. In the months before the wedding, we spent some time doing premarital counseling with Eddie Rester, our officiant, so we all had the opportunity to get to know each other well. Although we were standing before a chapel of 300 people, it felt as if it was just the three of us in the room at

some moments.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

I really love a clean and classic wedding look, and with almost every design decision made, I tried to choose timeless over trendy. I hoped to be able to look back on my wedding photos decades from now and have no regrets. I did decide to push myself outside of the classic box a bit by incorporating a little color. For our July wedding, I envisioned pale blue mixed with whites, creams, and lots of greenery.

WHAT YOU’RE DOING NOW

Ford and I are both in our last semester of school at UMMC in Jackson. In May, I will graduate from dental school and he will graduate from medical school. We are looking forward to

moving into the next phase of life together!

KATHRYN DAVIS ROBERT NANCE HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Robert and I met during our Senior year of college at Ole Miss in 2017. Funny enough, I met Miley (his dog and our future flower dog!) before I met Robert. One of my roommates was watching Miley and she actually ended up staying with me that night and got all the belly rubs and cuddles. A week later, we were hanging out at Robert’s house which was always known as the “Warren Street house” and I was reunited with Miley again. I was giving Miley all the pets and love and her owner walked up to me (which was Robert) and asked how I knew Miley which resulted in us talking the rest of the night. Fast forward, 6 years later and Miley is still as smiley as ever and even helped us celebrate our marriage by walking down the aisle as one of our flower girls. So it’s safe to say that Miley was our match-maker.

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DRESS

Elegant strapless satin wedding ball gown with a draped heart-

shaped cut with a very long train and custom bow in the back. The original dress was supposed to have off the shoulder straps but I had my seamstress remove the straps as well as sew on the belt and make a larger and more prominent bow. I truly felt like a princess! My veil was cathedral length with 3D florals (pearls in the center of each flower).

ball flower extravaganza above the dance floor truly blew me away. Oxford Floral did an amazing job! I also loved every detail that we incorporated Miley into -- the napkins, the cups, the signature drink signage. Funny story - we actually reconnected through Facebook during quarantine! We both grew up in the same home town (Memphis). Colin was currently living in Atlanta at the time, but we still made time to see eachother during all the crazy Covid madness.

TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL

I remember mentioning to Colin months prior how fun it would be to get engaged in front of the tree at The Peabody during Christmas time. Of course he made it happen! I thought I was meeting some family friends for a girls night, little did I know I would be getting engaged. My best friend pulled me aside to take a picture in front of the tree and the next thing I knew Colin came out from behind the tree and proposed! Such a surreal experience and he made it so perfect. MEREDITH PRESCOTT JACK COOPER HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

I don’t remember meeting Jack! Our parents have been friends since before we were born, and I’ve just always known who he was because New Albany is a small town. We started dating in 2015!

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DRESS

My wedding dress was a silk fit and flare with a deep sweetheart neckline. The elegant Rivini gown from Maggie Louise Bridal was accented in the back with a single loop, draped bow and buttons to the waist. My silk trim, cathedral length veil extended delicately past the train of my dress. Complete with “Cooper Hoop’’ diamond earrings and a graduated diamond tennis necklace from Van Atkins Jewelers, I felt like a bride in every way!

TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL

The summer after my junior year in college, I traveled to Greece for a study abroad program. My family and Jack flew out at the end to join me for vacation. My brother kept joking that buying me ice cream, coffee, or a purse would be cheaper

than marrying me. Little did he (or I) know yet that Jack had plans to propose in Santorini. For months, my mom had been talking about taking family pictures in Santorini, so I thought nothing of it when she told us to be up and dressed early for pictures. After an hour in the sunshine taking family photos, during which I told Jack to empty his pants pockets, he and I went to take pictures on top of a secluded church. That’s where he proposed!

FAVORITE MOMENT FROM YOUR BIG DAY

Jack and I had a private last dance to “I Don’t Dance” by Lee Brice as our guests exited the venue for our sparkler goodbye. The DMP Band was so sweet to sing one of our favorite songs and simply allow us to soak in the last few moments of our wedding day together.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

Some of my favorite wedding details were those unseen by most guests. Two fabric hearts were sewn into the hem of my dress. One was from the gingham dress my late grandmother wore when she and my grandfather eloped. The other heart was from a button down shirt of my late honor-

ary grandfather. The hearts were embroidered with the wedding dates that represented over sixty years of marriage. It was very special to honor such special people and strong examples of love in this way. I also wore my late grandmother’s wedding band, so she was celebrating with us the entire day.

PARKER KENNEDY WILLIAM WILDMAN HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

At Brighton Village in Oxford, MS, while we were both undergrads. William spotted Parker popping a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne across the pool, and he was smitten. We connected on social media a few days later, and the rest is history.

TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL

On Christmas Day 2020, William proposed to Parker at their favorite spot in Audubon Park in New Orleans. Throughout the pandemic, we would eat lunch together at a specific park bench in the park overlooking the duck ponds. It was our favorite place to retreat from the chaos of COVID, and this spot formed so many special memories for us early in our relationship, so our proposal there seemed appropriate. We had a busy day and were on the way to Parker’s grandparents’ house for Christmas Day festivities when William took a detour toward the park. Parker was frustrated as we were already late to lunch, so much so that William

eventually had to ask Parker to chill and go along with it. We, along with our dog Remington, made our way to our favorite spot where William asked Parker to marry him. Little did Parker know, the party at his grandparents’ house was also for our engagement, so they knew we we’d be a little late!

He proposed to me at El Agave. I was under the impression that we were bringing both sides of our families together for a “meet and greet.” They brought our daughter out in a shirt that said “Mommy, will you marry my DaDa?” It was so special!

SHURDEN GARRETT JOHN PILEGGI HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met in college at a fraternity flag football fundraiser! John was the coach of my sorority’s team.

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DRESS

My vision was timeless, elegant, and simple. We got married in late November and I loved the clean look of long sleeves. My dress was simple crepe, high neck, and long sleeves, but with an open back.

FAVORITE MOMENT FROM YOUR BIG DAY

There are so many special moments from our wedding day, but my favorite moment was walking down the aisle with my dad and looking at all of the people who mean so much to John and me, from all over the country and from all chapters of our lives. We felt so loved!

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS

My Aunt Debbie is an artist and specializes in calligraphy. She designed our wedding suite, painting of our venue (The Isom Place) that we used as a backdrop for our seating chart, menu, and a large velvet hand-beaded and hand-painted banner of our monogram. Our wedding colors were vibrant lilac and moss green and she incorporated little elements of our florals and table settings so beautifully! My mom Kathey, owns Wagnolia Bells- a wedding day pet service, and worked with my Aunt Debbie to include our dog, Wendall, in parts of our wedding weekend (on a hand-

drawn map of Oxford, our welcome sign, cocktail sign, and koozies). This meant so much to us!
