ACCREDITATIONS

Baptist Memorial HospitalNorth Mississippi received initial accreditation from the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) to establish an Internal Medicine Residency Program with 36 physician training positions. The first class of 12 resident physicians joined BMH-NM in July of 2021. Another class of 12 trainees joined the program in July 2022. In the fall of 2022, recruitment efforts secured a 3rd class of 12 resident physicians to reach the full complement of 36 residents physicians by July 2023.

In April 2021, Baptist North Mississippi Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Program received the sixth consecutive Three-Year Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). CARF

International accreditation represents the highest level of accreditation that can be given to an organization offering programs and services that are measurable, accountable, and of the highest quality.

In April 2022, Baptist North Mississippi received accredited by The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit national body that oversees the safety and quality of health care and other services in accredited organizations.

In November 2021, Baptist North Mississippi received a three-year Echocardiography Accreditation in echocardiography for adults by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC). IAC accreditation serves as an indicator of consistent quality care and a dedication to continuous improvement.

pulmonary rehabilitation program was certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation in recognition of the hospital’s commitment to enhancing standards of patient care.

AACVPR Program Certification is the only peer-reviewed accreditation process that assesses a program’s adherence to standards and guidelines developed and published by AACVRP and other related professional societies. The certification is valid for three years.

FEBRUARY 2022

Baptist North Mississippi performed the region’s first Impella RP heart pump implant. The Impella RP heart pump is the only heart pump approved by the Food and Drug Administration

to provide temporary circulatory support for patients experiencing right heart failure or decompensation after heart attack, heart transplant, open-heart surgery and in combination with left ventricular assist device.

MARCH 2022

Baptist North Mississippi’s physicians are among the first in Mississippi to use a new robotic bronchoscopy procedure to help detect lung cancer earlier. Auris Health’s Monarch Platform’s robotic bronchoscopy system combines the latest advancements in robotics, software, data science and endoscopy to allow surgeons to remove and biopsy nodules, or tumors, in the lungs that are small and hard to see or difficult to reach, ultimately leading to more accurate and earlier diagnosis.

APRIL 2022

Cardiologists at Baptist North Mississippi performed the region’s first procedure using a new 3D mapping platform for enhanced treatment of atrial fibrillation, or irregular heartbeat. This technology, developed by Abbot, provides physicians a 360-degree map of the heart during procedures.

MAY 2022

Baptist North Mississippi received an “A” grade in the spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing Baptist North Mississippi’s achievements protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, uses

up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year.

JUNE 2022

Baptist North Mississippi received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for the fourth year in a row. Baptist North Mississippi if one of only 240 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. As a Platinum Performance Award recipient, Baptist North Mississippi has established itself as a leader in setting the national standard for improving quality of care in patients with acute myocardial infarction. By meeting the award requirements set

forth in the registry, Baptist North Mississippi has demonstrated a commitment to providing reliable, comprehensive treatment for heart attack patients based on current clinical guideline recommendations.

AUGUST 2022

Baptist North Mississippi was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as a High Performing Hospital for hip fracture. U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions.

In the 15 specialties, 164 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. U. S. News evaluated each hospital’s performance using a variety of measures, such as survival rates, complication rates,

patient experience and level of nursing care.

by Press Ganey for the third year in a row. Press Ganey recognized a number of Baptist Memorial Health Care entities as 2022 Human Experience Guardian of Excellence Award winners. DO eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily. Produce contains an abundance of vital nutrients and is often

fiber-rich and low in calories, which helps you to feel full.

DON’T overlook the impact of beverages on weight loss.

Stick to water, tea or other unsweetened beverages to help with weight loss.

DO get moving more. Exercise boosts metabolism and benefits mood and strengthens muscles and the cardiovascular system as well.

DON’T go shopping while hungry.

DO speak with a doctor. A healthcare professional can assist you by indicating if a particular diet or fitness

hronic kidney disease is more common than people may realize. The organizers behind World Kidney Day indicate that roughly one in 10 people

across the globe have CKD, which can develop at any age.

The prevalence of CKD underscores how significant a threat it poses to the general public. In addition to its impact on public health, CKD also exerts a finan-

cial strain on countries across the globe. For instance, a recent report from NHS Kidney Care in England indicated the costs associated with kidney disease in that country outnumber expenses for cancers of the breast, lung, colon, and skin

combined. Across the pond in the United States, annual costs to treat CKD are estimated to be around $48 billion.

Many instances of CKD are not preventable. However, these three tips can help anyone reduce their risk for CKD. 1. Recognize your risk. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases indicates that individuals are more likely to develop kidney disease if they have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and/or a family history of kidney failure. Annual physical examinations can indicate if blood pressure levels are high and help to determine if a person is prediabetic. Prediabetes does

THE BASICS OF CARDIAC ARREST

On a Monday night in early January 2023, the Buffalo Bills were in Cincinnati to take on the hometown Bengals. The game was a highly anticipated, primetime matchup between two of the best teams in the National Football League, but it would be interrupted and ultimately postponed after Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a frightening injury during the game. After tackling Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, Hamlin stood up, only to fall flat moments later. Medical personnel rushed to Hamlin’s side, and it was later determined he went into cardiac arrest.

Days went by as football fans across the nation prayed for Hamlin’s recovery. Good news arrived by the end of the week, as doctors treating Hamlin reported his condition showed marked improvement. Indeed, within days of that news, Hamlin was on his way back to Buffalo, much to the delight of millions of people across the country.

Hamlin’s story made international headlines and left many people across the globe asking questions about cardiac arrest.

What is cardiac arrest?

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute reports that cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping. One of the dangers of cardiac arrest is that blood stops pumping to the brain and other vital organs. In the days after doctors first shared news regarding Hamlin’s recovery, praise was heaped on the medical personnel, including Bills assistant athletic trainer Denny Kellington, for their rapid response, which saved Hamlin’s life and helped preserve the 24-yearold safety’s neurological function.

How dangerous is cardiac arrest?

The NHLBI notes that cardiac arrest is a medical emergency. In fact, the NHLBI indicates that nine out of 10 people who have cardiac arrest outside of a hospital die. That makes the recovery of Hamlin, who was administered CPR on the field for several minutes prior to being transported to the hospital, all the more incredible.

What are the symptoms of cardiac arrest?

The suddenness of the injury to Hamlin undoubtedly left millions of people confused about how the condition could affect a young professional athlete seemingly in peak physical condition. Specifics about Hamlin’s medical history are protected by privacy laws, so unless Hamlin chooses to share that information, the public will not learn about why he suffered from cardiac arrest. However, Johns Hopkins reports that there are three main causes of the condition.

• Arrhythmia and ventricular

fibrillation: Arrhythmia is a condition marked by problematic electrical signals in the heart that lead to an abnormal heartbeat. Ventricular fibrillation is a type of arrhythmia that causes the heart to tremble rather than pump blood normally.

It is the most common cause of cardiac arrest.

• Cardiomyopathy: Cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the heart is enlarged. Johns Hopkins notes that when a person has cardiomyopathy, the heart muscle thickens or dilates, which causes abnormal contractions of the heart.

• Coronary artery disease: The NHLBI indicates that most people who experience cardiac arrest have heart disease, even if they didn’t know it beforehand. The most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease, which is

marked by the buildup of cholesterol inside the lining of the coronary arteries. That buildup leads to the formation of plaque which can partially or completely block blood flow in the arteries of the heart.

Certain behaviors or lifestyle choices also can trigger cardiac arrest. For example, the NHLBI reports that heavy alcohol consumption or recent use of cocaine, amphetamines or marijuana can cause cardiac arrest. Severe emotional stress and physical exertion, including that which is typically required of competitive athletes, also can trigger cardiac arrest.

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY

Baptist North Mississippi is the only facility in the Oxford area with a hyperbaric oxygen therapy suite. Some wounds need 100 percent oxygen to heal properly. Pressurized oxygen stimulates the body’s natural healing process allowing new blood vessels to grow into injured tissue.

Hyperbaric oxygen is a medical treatment in which the patient breathes pure oxygen under increased pressure. It is administered in a single-person chamber and while it may be the main treatment conditions, it is usually part of an overall plan of care involving surgery, antibiotics or other therapy.

Hyperbaric oxygen is a simple concept. The air we breathe is normally 21% oxygen at 14.7 pounds of pressure per square inch (psi). In the chamber, the pressure can be increased to as much as three times normal, and the patient breathes 100% oxygen. This safely increases the amount of oxygen in the blood to many times its normal levels, thereby delivering much more oxygen to all parts of the body. This increase in oxygen delivery helps improve healing and controls infection in certain conditions.

HYPERBARIC OXYGEN FACILITY

Our single-person chambers of clear, acrylic plastic are seven feet long and 30 inches in diameter. During the treatment, you lie on a stretcher inside the chamber. The entire chamber is filled with oxygen so all you do is breathe normally. An open microphone inside the chamber allows you to communicate with the staff at all times. Each treatment usually lasts about two hours and you may sleep, listen to music, watch television or your favorite video streaming service.

MEDICATIONS YOU RECEIVE AT THE HOSPITAL

While you’re in the hospital, your physician may prescribe more than one medication for you. Ask these questions about them and write down the answers: • What are the names of the medications I’m taking? uWhy am I taking this medication?

• What times will I be receiving the medication?

• Can I see what my medications look like?

• May I have a summary list of my discharge medications?

PRE-ADMISSION AND INSURANCE

Please let Baptist know ahead of time that you are coming. Most insurance companies require prior approval or certification.

• Notify your insurance company as soon as you think you will have to go to the hospital.

• Many insurance companies require you to notify them no later than 48 hours after an emergency admission to the hospital.

Make sure you have a copy of the Patient Bill of Rights in your hospital room. If for any reason you feel you aren’t receiving the best care possible, talk to the nurse in charge or the hospital’s patient relations representative.

• For your safety, you will receive an identification wristband to wear until you are discharged from the hospital.

• Any medications you bring into the hospital must be left with the nurse.

• Please do not keep valuables or money with you. The hospital cannot be responsible for them.

• Electronic appliances, such as hair dryers, clocks, electric razors and curling irons, must be checked and approved by someone from nursing services before being used in your room.

• Do not bring pillows or blankets from home. If you need extra linens, please contact someone at the nurses’ station.

COUNTDOWN TO CHECK-OUT

Procedures for your check-out or discharge from the hospital involve your doctors and staff working together. Please be patient during this process. We understand your eagerness to return home!

• Your doctor will advise you that you are ready to be discharged from the hospital and will write orders directing the hospital staff to begin the discharge process.

• Your nurse will act on any orders your doctor has ordered prior to discharge. This could involve final tests or lab procedures

that need to be completed prior to your leaving. This process can take several hours.

• At this point, you may not be completely recovered and may need extra attention and care at home. Please tell your nurse you would like to speak with a case manager and/or social worker if you need help in planning for special equipment.

• Contact family members to arrange a ride home, unless you will be traveling by ambulance (hospital staff will handle that).

Be sure to let the hospital staff know if you prefer a particular ambulance service.

• Once you have been officially cleared for discharge, your nurse will remove your IV and other medical devices, discuss with you any physician instructions, such as follow-up visits and how to take medications.

• Finally, you will be assisted to the door by a member of the hospital staff.

Managing Your Pain Based on your comfort level, your health care providers will develop a pain management plan for you while you’re in the hospital. Be sure to share with your doctor what has worked to relieve your pain in the past and to provide honest answers to questions about the pain you’re experiencing.

• Don’t hesitate or be afraid to tell the hospital staff if you’re in pain.

• Don’t wait to report pain. Pain is much easier to control when it first begins than

when it has become intolerable.

• Actively help your health care professionals assess your pain. Answer their questions as completely and honestly as you can.

PARKING

Parking for patients and visitors is available in the front parking lots at the hospital and emergency room main entrances.

Handicap accessible parking spots and expectant mother reserved spots are also available in the parking lots. Patients and visitors are cautioned not to park in reserved or designated areas. Please be sure to always lock your vehicle. If you need an escort to your vehicle, you may call the operator for Security or dial ext.

The main entrance and emergency room entrance is located at 1100 Belk Boulevard. There is a stop light located at the main entrance.

OVERNIGHT GUEST SERVICES

Regular patient rooms have a sofa for one (1) overnight guest. It is recommended all

overnight guests obtain a pass from the front desk before 10:00 p.m. Please ask a staff member for linens. Guests should fold bedding each morning to help maintain a pleasant and tidy room. Our guests with patients in the ICU are welcome to stay overnight in the ICU family waiting room assigned to that unit. Recliners and linens are available for your convenience.

Breakfast: 6:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.

Lunch: 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Dinner: 5 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Weekends

Dinner: 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

The hospital chapel is located on the first floor and is always open to provide a quiet place for prayer and
