Owensboro Catholic Schools share in the mission of the Church in communion with families and parishes to provide excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics which prepares students to become responsible individuals as well as members of their family, Church, and community.
Christ is the Reason for This School
Earlier this summer, OCS brought in a nationally renowned expert on trauma informed and trauma responsive schools. Over the two days, he talked with our teachers and staff about the new research coming out about how certain events in a child’s life can impact them both now and later in life if the trauma is not dealt with properly. The newest research points to how certain events can change the structure of your body’s chemistry and can lead to future issues such as hypertension, diabetes, and other life altering health issues.
As his program unfolded, there was a primary point that kept occurring over and over – and that is how the intervention of one person can negate the stressors caused by the trauma someone has gone through.
This “Power of 1” concept isn’t a new one by any means, but the impact it can have is something we maybe have never truly considered. The idea behind the “Power of 1” is all about the impact one caring person can have on another and whatever situation they happen to be going through.
Earlier this year, my wife of 37 years passed away from cancer – a sudden and shocking circumstance after only being diagnosed 6 months previous. While many people reached out to me with words of sympathy, comfort, and prayers, there was one person who made an impactful difference in my coping with such a loss. The trauma I endured was negated by the “Power of 1”!
On the cover of this edition of The Green and White you meet a person who exemplifies the impact of the “Power of 1”. Jeff Hedges was someone who would go out of his way to make a difference in the life of another – even if he did not know the person well. His example of selfless love and caring for his fellow man is a characteristic we should all strive for – and is exactly what we as Catholics are called to do.
My prayer for you is that the Lord will continue to guide and bless you, that you will continue to support Owensboro Catholic to the best of your abilities, and that you will remain open to being the “Power of 1” to someone in your life!
Keith Osborne OCS CAOA little over 20 years ago when I was principal at Daviess County, Ethan, my second son was born, and almost immediately we knew there were some health issues. My wife Angela and I had no idea what the future would hold for him and our family. After a month at Kosair’s Hospital in Louisville, we were able to bring him home. This was an extremely stressful time for our family. As if the worry of having a newborn isn’t already enough, one with special needs seemed to multiply those stressors. Returning to work was not something I was looking forward to or even knew if I could do effectively given the emotional toll we were experiencing, but I knew it was what I had to do. With the power of prayer and my belief God was in control of a plan for me, I started back. The very first day I read the announcements, I remembered something I read while at Kosair’s Hospital. It had to do with taking charge of our thinking and our attitude. There are so many things we are dealt in life we have no control over. But what we are in control of is how we react and respond. I decided that day, rather than saying, “Have a great day,” which implies we just react to what happens, I started saying, “Make it a GREAT Day,” which with a subtle change, puts us in charge of what type of day we will have. I used that every day to help remind everyone, including myself, not to feel sorry for myself. I know I have the control to choose each day how I will approach my challenges.
Once I became principal at Owensboro Catholic High School, I continued with, “Make it a GREAT Day” and added Owensboro Catholic High School. I also put in a few phrases at the end of daily announcements I think are very important for all of us to hear each day. For the last 12 years after scripture readings and the Lord’s Prayer, students have heard these messages to begin their day and by the end of the year, these phrases are somewhat stuck in their heads, or so I am told.
Each year, students K-12 are gifted with a t-shirt by the school to wear on Fridays. We call them our Faith in Education shirts
and there is a new design each year. To my surprise, the t-shirts have all these phrases on the back. Here is what you’ll read:
Be a Blessing to someone today and every day this week
Always Treat Others as You Would Like to Be Treated Doing Right Is Never Wrong, so always Do Right
Remember to Count Your Blessings and Not Your Problems
Have a GREAT Attitude, give a Great Effort and Great Things Will Come Your Way
Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, But Today is a Gift from God, So Make the Most of It
And Make It A GREAT Day Owensboro Catholic High School!
I was a little taken aback and surprised by the Faith in Education shirts and if it is possible to be happy and somewhat sad at the same time, then I think I know what that now feels like. Not only am I extremely honored and very humbled by this gesture, but it also makes me a little sad (in a good way) to know what I will be leaving. As I have said many times, I am blessed, privileged, and honored to be the principal at Owensboro Catholic High School!
“I had the privilege of coaching with Jeff my first year at OCMS and he was a true example of selfless leadership with the time and energy he gave to the young men in the football program. The moment I will always remember was when we pulled the team together the day after Jeff passed away. As we shared the news about Jeff, we were also able to talk about his faith in Christ and how fortunate we are to be able to live out our faith. Having the opportunity to discuss Christ through challenging circumstances was affirmation for me that I was coaching in the right program.”
Kyle Gorman OCMS Assistant Football Coach By Brett Downing, OCS Digital Media SpecialistJeff Hedges was a man who led a life of service. Simply ask anyone who knew him to tell you about Jeff’s life and undoubtedly, you would hear that he was a man who always answered the call and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
You may remember Jeff as a member of the “chain gang” at our high school football games, coaching the Catholic Middle School football team or perhaps one of his son’s other sports teams. Maybe you knew him as a fellow member of St. Pius X Parish. However you crossed paths with Jeff, it was evident that his life was dedicated to his faith, his family, and Owensboro Catholic football. It has been said that he spoke of the three every opportunity he had. The sentiment comes as no surprise, as Jeff was a proud family man who dedicated his time and energy for the betterment of those around him. As Father Richard Meredith said, “I remember Jeff Hedges as a man of deep Catholic faith and of
trust in God, inseparable from Charlotte and Ben. He was often to be found in his Scout leader’s uniform, sponsoring the troop of which Ben was a member. Jeff presented a peaceful joy and thoughtfulness, with a sense of wise humor. What he taught and believed he also lived, willing to serve, and do so generously.”
It has been ten years since Jeff left this world, and his absence is still felt greatly by our Catholic community. It is because of people like Jeff that our programs are successful. As Jeff’s brother Brian said, “Jeff invested his time in the young people who would be around after he is gone and trusted that they would use what he shared with them to be a blessing to others.” And that they have. The Hedges family has ever so graciously chosen to take that one step further by donating to the Owensboro Catholic High School Athletic Endowment Fund in honor of Jeff and all he has done for the program. On behalf of the Owensboro Catholic Community, we cannot thank Jeff enough for all that he has done for our schools while he was here, and now that he has passed, his legacy lives on. ♠
I leave you with this reflection on Jeff written by his son, Ben ’08.
“From the ball fields behind St. Pius, to working the chain gang on Friday nights at Steele Stadium, if it involved sports with OCS and OCHS, Jeff Hedges was usually present. Although Dad followed me volunteering as a coach beginning with baseball at age six, his involvement and enjoyment of coaching and volunteering continued long after I graduated from Owensboro Catholic.
My Dad was always present and made time for me, even if time was limited. I was blessed to have a dad that made me a priority and he showed it daily. It’s definitely something that I’ve adopted from him with my own three children. The importance of them knowing you love them and truly care, giving them your attention and time is what they will appreciate years after they’ve graduated and begin their careers and start their own family.
For Dad, coaching was a win-win because he could be where I was. The reality is evidence of how much he enjoyed coaching and volunteering even once I got to high school where he continued as an assistant coach at OCMS and announcer for the varsity baseball in the Spring. It wasn’t until after he passed that I understood the impact he had wasn’t just on me, but was on everyone. As competitive as he was, winning wasn’t the only goal. His fulfillment came with seeing those he coached be disciplined and “doing the little things” right all the time, as he would often say. You can’t be successful in life cutting corners. Having perseverance and the personal discipline to do what’s right will define who you are.
The impact he’s made on my life is so profound. I feel a large part of my success is attributed to him and how I was raised. I also cannot help but think of the impact he made on the lives of those he coached for so many years. Living a life full of joy, love for God, and the “want to make a difference” attitude is something we should all strive to live by.
For all of the young athletes he coached throughout the years, I am glad and proud we got to share him together!”
“Anything is possible, if you think it’s worthwhile, if you’re willing to go the distance, to go the extra mile. With determination and effort, you can often achieve more because you don’t always get what you wish, but what you work for.”
Paula Garrott

The Owensboro Catholic Phonathon fund is the backbone of all philanthropic support that sustains the day-to-day needs and ensures the mission of our school continues to shine brightly! In this season of giving, please continue your tradition of support to the Phonathon, while considering an additional gift toward one of our capital improvements - like the chapel renovation. Call Natalie today!
Owensboro Catholic Schools is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization. Your generous monetary gift is tax deductible.
What class will finish on top? The top ten giving classes for the 2022 Phonathon will have their class year mounted on our Giving Classes Wall of Fame. Friends of OCHS make up a class of their very own.

While the most common form of financial generosity is the outright gift, there are many additional ways to make financial donations, both during your lifetime and upon your passing. These other ways often allow individuals to donate larger gifts than they thought were possible. So, while outright unrestricted gifts are always deeply appreciated, these types of donations may help you achieve other planning objectives at the same time.
Will Bequests – A Will provides instructions to the Court and your loved ones as to how your remaining assets should be distributed. By leaving a dollar amount or percentage of your remaining estate to support the schools, churches, and ministries that were important to you, you leave a lasting legacy and can inspire others to do the same.
Beneficiary – Life insurance policies and many types of financial accounts ask you to identify a primary beneficiary and a secondary beneficiary. Consider listing Owensboro Catholic Schools as one of your beneficiaries.
Qualified Distributions – Once you turn 70½, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your IRA to a qualified non-profit (up to $100,000 annually). A QCD can also satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) obligation that begins at age 72. The amount donated is excluded from your taxable income.
Charitable Gift Annuity – Put simply, this is a contract between a donor and a qualified charity. As an example, a 72-year-old can make a gift of $10,000 and receive 5.4% on that gift in income each year for life. There are tax benefits as well, including a partial charitable deduction and a break on income tax.
These are just some of the ways to support Owensboro Catholic School or other meaningful causes. If you’d like to learn more, please call and we can arrange for you to meet with a qualified legal or financial professional.
At this time of year, we like to send a proof list to our alumni and friends so you can check to see if you have made your annual Phonathon gift, and if so, is your name listed correctly? Please keep in mind, this list was compiled on October 1, 2022, so our list may have been submitted for publication before we received your contribution. Unrestricted gifts from alumni are a powerful vote of confidence in the future of Owensboro Catholic High School. Alumni who contribute are making a strong statement about the education they received and are ensuring that future generations have the same opportunities. The Owensboro Catholic High School community is grateful to the following who have donated so far this year. A final list of donors who have contributed to special restricted projects will be listed in the next Green and White. Thank you!

The myth of charitable giving stems from a popular belief that only the people in the socio-economic class just above my own have the means to be generous. However, EVERY person has the capacity to be generous. From the “Widow’s Mite” to the “Good Samaritan,” scripture clearly makes generosity a mandate for Christian people. But the subject of “how” someone should be generous takes on layers of complicated discernment. But these things are generally true of generous people:
• Generous people are appreciative for the ways their lives have been richly blessed. Generosity is an expression of that gratitude.
• Generous people recognize that God owns it all anyway. We only get to manage the gifts entrusted to us during our lifetimes, and then that responsibility gets passed on. But how we disseminate God’s gifts are a serious responsibility.
We want to send a special thank you to our alumni who took advantage of the benefits we offer at OCHS for reunions. It was great to have so many alumni roaming the halls this summer during a tour hosted by OCHS! The stories shared during the tours, the memories relived, sheer shock of what has remained the same after all these years and what improvements we’ve made gets us excited for being part of your next milestone reunion!
Here are a few reunion services offered by the OCS Central Office:
l Provide class list for mailings
l OC Representative to speak at event
l Share and promote your reunion through OCS
l Onsite Mass or tour before reunion
Please contact Central Office at 270-686-8896 for more details!
It was fifty years ago that our Owensboro Catholic High School football team made history by defeating the Owensboro Red Devils for the first time in program history, and earlier this season, several of those former Aces came together in celebration and remembrance!
“It was originally just going to be about eight guys getting together,” said Steve Castlen, a senior defensive back on the 1972-73 team. “All of a sudden, it grew. We had about 35 people come on Thursday night, and then Friday we toured Catholic High before the game. Afterwards, we got together to tailgate and were introduced at halftime, it was really nice. It turned into a huge reunion and quite the social thing. It’s really brought together a community of folks who are really having a good time with all of this.”
The celebration did not end there, with the Class of ’72 in attendance, our Owensboro Catholic Aces defeated the Owensboro Red Devils once again in a close match up. What a night to remember!
On September 9th, the Owensboro Catholic High family celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first win over Owensboro Senior High in football (13-7). There were about seventy to eighty former players, cheerleaders and students from that era at the tailgate before the OC-OHS game that night at Steele Stadium. Names stand out from that 1972 team: Jones, Castlen, Murphy, Conkright, Flaspoehler, Riney, Self, Weaver, Arachikavitz, Draeger, Martin, Mattingly, Campbell, Prendergast, Itschner, Bumm, Jarboe, Hayden, Jones, Rumage, Blincoe, Hermann, Logsdon, Orth, Posey, Cosby, Flaherty, Smith, Brown, Williams and many more.
The cheerleaders won state titles in 1972 and 1973. Names stand out like: Barna, Berry, Hayden, Millay, Bressler, May and many more.
That game helped to change the trajectory of sports at Catholic High forever. We had been close to victory over Senior High several times. That game proved to everyone that we could play against our biggest rival at a championship level. It was only one ballgame. But it was more. The foundation for that victory was years in the making. Names stand out like: Conner, VanMeter, Combest, Mischel, Medley, Rodgers, Blanford, Blan, Coomes, Bumm, Settles, Krampe, Clements, Johnson, Norcia, Edge, Hein, Calhoun, Gibson, Wilson, Cox, Embry, Ward, Martin, Wathen, Gardner, Ivey, Jones, Day and many, many more. Thanks to Steve Castlen and Bill Jones and the Jones family for putting on this reunion. Thanks to Rick Ebelhar for leading us in the blessing. We prayed for the Catholic High family, for this time together, and for the BBQ meal provided. We got to see an exciting game that night. Catholic High drove down the field, scored the winning touchdown in the final minutes and beat Senior High (21-17). Like catching lightning twice.
We want to continue to share in the joys and successes of our alumni. Please take a moment and submit some news to us on how you are doing. New marriage, baby, job, move? Let us hear from you. All correspondence, along with photos may be emailed to Jenny Glenn at jenny.glenn@owensborocatholic.org.
The Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts is a threeweek summer program for rising juniors and seniors in the state of Kentucky. Each spring over 1700 students audition for 256 spots in the program. The program is located at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. For three solid weeks, the students live, breathe, eat, and sleep the arts. It’s a thrilling, often life-changing experience, as they meet new friends, explore their creativity, and discover new things about who they are and who they can be in the future.
Martha Fitts Clark, OCHS 1958 alum and one of the first female certified public accountants in Owensboro, became the first woman to be inducted into the Junior Achievement of West Kentucky’s Owensboro Business Hall of Fame. Clark, retired president of Martha Fitts Clark & Associates, an accounting firm, taught math at Owensboro High School and Daviess County High School and worked for several local accounting firms before starting her own company in 1984. Sixteen years ago, she and Marianne Smith Edge launched Impact 100, which has raised more than $3.6 million for local nonprofits through the years. She said she has devoted her life to helping women become all they can be. “My purpose is to do everything in my power to help lift the burdens of others,” Clark said.
Dave Snyder received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination as part of the team for “Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic)” at the 74th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards for his work on the Hulu miniseries “Pam & Tommy.” Snyder has worked on projects for the HBO anthology series “Tales from the Crypt” and television shows and films that include “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” the 2009 film “Star Trek,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood” and AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”
Please help us congratulate Mrs. Marilyn Pace of Owensboro Catholic High School as the 2022 Outstanding Catholic School Educator of the Year. Marilyn embodies every characteristic that could be desired in an outstanding Catholic educator.
This new school year will be her 50th year in Catholic education!
Marilyn began her career as an English and French teacher, where she developed a reputation for being a very student-oriented educator whose instructional skills prepared her students for college, the workforce, and adult life. After teaching in the classroom, she accepted the position as media specialist and modernized the library and media platforms in her school so all students could access a variety of materials needed for all types of assignments and research.
Throughout that time, she continued to teach classes part time when called upon while still meeting the demands in the media center. She has assisted students and staff in so many areas and sponsors and meets with her book club. When many are slowing down towards the end of their career, Marilyn asked and volunteered to organize our all-school reading program not only to increase literacy levels, but also to promote reading for enjoyment for all levels of students.
For her efforts over the years, she was nominated in 2021 by the Kentucky Association of School Librarians for a lifetime achievement award.
The following quote from a current English teacher and former student of hers says it all:
“I wasn’t a great student, but I was able to connect with her. She made assignments that were relevant to the less motivated student like me. She spoke a lot about life after high school and it was apparent to all of us that she cared about us all - not just the advanced students. She is one of the reasons I became an English teacher. There are certain people you just think of when you think Owensboro Catholic High School and she is one of those people.”
Congratulations, Mrs. Pace, well deserved!
Greenwell Chisholm staff were admiring the last edition of The Green and White when they realized many of them represented several decades of Owensboro Catholic graduates. Rollie Rhodes ’85, Kelly Stallings ’83, Eric Mullican ’83, Barbara Weikel ’72, Carl Greenwell ’69, Brian Greenwell ’01, and Lori Johnson ’99. Kara Howard ’09, just happened to be in the building that day viewing a proof for her employer, Wendell Foster, and was invited to jump in the photo.
Thank you, Greenwell Chisholm, for printing our OCHS alumni magazine. We appreciate YOU!
Nathan Sharp recently left Facebook to co-found a new company. Nathan joined Facebook when he took a role as a product manager at Instagram in 2016. At Instagram, Nathan led the launch of Instagram Stories, and then went on to start an internal incubator that launched products like Facebook Dating. He finished his time there as a lead for Horizon Worlds, a open world game on the Oculus virtual reality headset.
He’s starting the new company with a colleague from Instagram. Although they’re early in development, they’ll be focused on an app that makes it easier to stay up to date with close friends - building on all they’ve learned in the last 7 years.
Nathan graduated from Harvard College and Dartmouth Business School. He’s married to Jenny Wong Sharp, and they live with their three daughters - Eleanor (5), Alice (3), and Grace (1) - in San Francisco, not too far from the house featured in Mrs. Doubtfire.
The KHSAA recently recognized the silver anniversaries of softball State champion teams. The Owensboro Catholic 1996 Slow pitch softball State Champions were honored on June 11, 2022 in Lexington during the State Fast-pitch Final 4. Those in attendance were Stephanie Jackson Dawson ’97, Sara Alvey Murphy ’97, Coach George Randolph ’77, Lori Boarman Quinn ’97, and Lori Murphy Grant ’97.
The 2022 ATHENA Award was presented to 1988 OCHS alumna, Karla Ward. Karla serves as the executive director of New Beginnings Sexual Assault Support Services in Owensboro, KY. The ATHENA Award is presented annually by Girls Inc., to someone who empowers women, strives to better the community and has achieved excellence in their profession. Ward began her career with New Beginnings Sexual Assault Support Services in 1998 and was named executive director in 2007. Under her leadership, the nonprofit’s all-female staff and budget has nearly tripled. Through the quick growth of the organization, Ward recognized the need for and implemented a supervisory level of women who could provide mentoring and leadership to their individual teams. She also implemented an Infant to Work policy, allowing mothers to bring their babies with them to work until they began crawling.
Ward has lead efforts to provide programming and to educate young girls on the importance of healthy relationships; to maintain services in a seven-county area; and to ensure that marginalized and underrepresented communities are served including communities of color, LGBTQ, males, immigrant and refugees, detention facilities and human trafficking.

We are a powerful community! But every community is broken down into a individual roles and responsibilities. One teacher. One Coach. One donor. One leader. One coordinator. One alumni. One administrative assistant. One principal. One prayer! Our goal is to try and build a fortress of ministry with individual powerful performances.
It’s impossible for this publication to spotlight EVERY powerful player in this organization, but we have witnessed dramatic change over the last few years, thanks to the many people who continue to step up. Our OCS team has coordinated efforts of consolidated finance, communication, admissions and development. There’s so much more going on, but just to name a few:
We are pioneering a faith formation office to develop strategies that complement the academic strategies in religious education. There will be more emphasis on retreats, days of reflection, chapel visits, adoration, formal and spontaneous prayer and more Catholic practices and experiences. Even coaches are being encouraged to use the Virtue=Strength program to use their positions of authority to mentor students with Catholic virtues.
We’ve had significant growth in generosity from our alumni and benefactors. We continue to make capital upgrades at each site.
Through the sacrifice of teachers and staff, our schools stayed open the two years most educational systems were not allowed to return to the classroom.
We have significantly upgraded our information technology and student access to technology.
Our professional development has focused on helping faculty reach deeper relationships with students who are marginalized.
We are developing internal leadership, and looking for complementary external leadership to merge our successes with the best practices of other systems.
This just scratches the surface of the activity going on in our community. The impetus for all these efforts flow from the power of one coach, one alumni, one volunteer, one staff member, one principal, one student, one donor. One prayer. Pretty soon, each powerful “one” becomes a community of one driving in the same direction; using all of our energy and resources to bring our students closer to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church through our mission. We want them to be one powerful influence in the world they will inherit.
And during this time of thankfulness, we appreciate all of the people who contribute a portion of their lives to our success. Thank you. And don’t forget to remember us in your individual prayers. The prayer of one community provides the most powerful influence of all!

Students at OCHS exemplified Catholicity in September by coming together and donating over 3,000 items in their latest drive to support the Help Office! We love seeing the work of Faith in Action!
“This year has been a difficult time for those we serve because many are having to make a choice to pay their rent or utility bills or provide food for their family’s table. Therefore, we have had a drastic increase in requests for food and have struggled to meet the demand. Our Food Pantry Shelves have been bare. Thank God for Owensboro Catholic High School! Your generous food contributions weighing several hundred pounds show your outpouring and love for those less fortunate. On behalf of the Help Office of Owensboro, Thank You and God Bless.” – Angela Settle, Executive Director of the Help Office
