OCS MISSION STATEMENT Owensboro Catholic Schools share in the mission of the Church in communion with families and parishes to provide excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics which prepare students to become responsible individuals as well as members of their family, Church, and community.

This is a time of change, and the opportunities are endless. Our enrollment is on the increase, our new leadership team is amazing, and we continue to evaluate, align, and work on curriculums that give our students their best opportunity for academic success. We are a team, all on the same journey and mission: To grow and develop our students, body, mind, and soul, in a Christ-centered environment. We want them to mature to become responsible members of their family, Church, and Community. I am excited about the direction of our school system. When this position became available, I felt God’s hand pushing me to ask questions and prayerfully consider what skills and knowledge I could bring to the position. After much thought, prayer, and discussion, I decided to utilize my 32 years of educational expertise to strengthen and build upon our mission. Each day I am discovering new things about our great system and getting to know all the dedicated people that make OCS outstanding. One key component of my position is to mentor and be a resource for our new leadership team. After serving 25 years as a principal, I feel I can assist our new principals by providing them with resources and guidance to be effective leaders within our schools. Even though it took us the entire summer to fill our four leadership positions, I believe we achieved our goal of bringing in the best faith-filled leadership available at each of our school sites. All four principals are dedicated and passionate about education and are excited to be part of the OCS family. Through my position, I hope to increase collaboration and communication between buildings which will provide more continuity and consistency within our schools to work as a true system. One of the first things we accomplished as a leadership team was to develop a K-12 New Teacher Mentoring Program. The Mentoring Program is a focused collection and reflection selected from a teacher’s work that demonstrates the new teacher’s efforts to analyze student learning as well as the new teacher’s performance on the Diocesan and Kentucky Teacher Standards. The program’s organizational structure includes mentoring, observations, and meetings throughout the year. Through this program, we hope to provide our teachers with the support and guidance they need to be successful in our schools. In my opinion, there is no investment more critical to the future of Catholic schools than the investment we make in the selection, mentoring, and development of our principals and teachers. We are currently working on many more initiatives, projects, and endeavors. I ask that you be part of this exciting year of change with prayers, support, and positive thoughts. We are a team and together, we can make OCS even better. If you can, please consider contributing to one of our current projects. We appreciate all you do for our system. We need the ACES spirit to live on for future generations.

As autumn paints the world with hues of gold, red, and orange, it’s as if the world itself is echoing the warmth of a grateful heart. This is, without a doubt, my most favorite time of the year. The air turns crisp, and a feeling of gratitude fills our hearts as we reflect on the year’s journey. It’s a time when we’re not just individuals; we are called to be a community, to come together, and make a difference. I am extremely grateful to this Owensboro Catholic community. The most important gift you give each year is your gift to support our school through the OC Connect appeal. Every donation is important. Every gift matters. Every contribution helps us in our mission to provide young people with a well-rounded Catholic education. Gifts to the OC Connect appeal provide funds for the general operating budget of the school as well as valuable tuition assistance which helps more families benefit from an Owensboro Catholic education. Yes, Owensboro Catholic charges tuition, but we work to keep tuition as low as possible. Your investment in the form of charitable gifts supports the strategic needs of the school. These help to sustain programs and services not covered by tuition. Your participation in the fundraising efforts of Owensboro Catholic indicates your belief in the value of Catholic education and inspires others to donate. In a world that sometimes feels divided, the spirit of unity during this season is a breath of fresh air. It’s a 4

Do You Feel Inspired? It is still the goal of Catholic High to either move the Chapel to a more centralized location or renovate our existing Chapel. Currently, the new space available for the Chapel is used daily for various reasons, and we would like to build a multi-purpose facility adjacent to the building to house extracurricular activities after school during the winter. There is still time left to significantly upgrade our facilities, but it would take a significant gift to move these projects forward. Every person has the capacity to be generous. Scripture makes generosity a mandate for Christian people. The subject of “how” someone should be generous takes on layers of complicated discernment. But, these things are generally true of generous people: • •
Generous people are appreciative for the ways their lives have been richly blessed. Generosity is an expression of that gratitude. Generous people recognize that God owns it all anyway. We only get to manage the gifts entrusted to us during our lifetimes, and then that responsibility gets passed on. But how we disseminate God’s gifts are a serious responsibility.

While the most common form of financial generosity is the outright gift, there are many additional ways to make financial donations, both during your lifetime and upon your passing. These other ways often allow individuals to donate larger gifts than they thought were possible. So, while outright unrestricted gifts are always deeply appreciated, these types of donations may help you achieve other planning objectives at the same time. Will Bequests – A Will provides instructions to the Court and your loved ones as to how your remaining assets should be distributed. By leaving a dollar amount or percentage of your remaining estate to support the schools, churches, and ministries that were important to you, you leave a lasting legacy and can inspire others to do the same. Beneficiary – Life insurance policies and many types of financial accounts ask you to identify a primary beneficiary and a secondary beneficiary. Consider listing Owensboro Catholic Schools as one of your beneficiaries. Qualified Distributions – Once you turn 70½, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your IRA to a qualified non-profit (up to $100,000 annually). A QCD can also satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) obligation that begins at age 73. The amount donated is excluded from your taxable income. Charitable Gift Annuity – Put simply, this is a contract between a donor and a qualified charity. As an example, a 73-year-old can make a gift of $10,000 and receive 5.4% on that gift in income each year for life. There are tax benefits as well, including a partial charitable deduction and a break on income tax. If you’d like to learn more, please call and we can arrange for you to meet with a qualified legal or financial professional.

Influence This year we welcome Owensboro Catholic High School’s newest principal, George Powell.

The power of a good influence can change your life forever. For OCHS’s newest principal, George Powell, that holds true. Mr. Powell is entering into his 28th year as an educator, but the plan the Lord had for his life was not always easy to discern. Mr. Powell was the first in his family to attend college. He enrolled at Eastern Kentucky University, but he started college undecided with his major. His future

COVER STORY Amanda (Hayden) was an Owensboro Catholic alumnus, class of ’98. Amanda’s family all went to Catholic High, and the Owensboro Catholic family had always remained in her heart. After their second child was born, they decided to move back to Owensboro. Amanda and her family were incredible influences that led Mr. Powell to Owensboro. The influence from Amanda opened many doors for Mr. Powell and planted many seeds that would lead to his journey of becoming Catholic. Growing up in a Baptist home, Mr. Powell was not very familiar with the Catholic church. Amanda’s example of her faith and invitation to Mass is what influenced George and later was the reason he became Catholic. George said, “The Mass is George and his wife Amanda have five children: Mayme (10th grade, OCHS), Andrew (8th grade, OCMS), Hattie Jane (6th grade, OCES 4-6), Polly (4th grade, OCES 4-6) and Georgia (1st grade, Foust Elementary).

They impacted him so much that they led him to his lifetime career and mission. After graduation from EKU, Mr. Powell went right into teaching as a middle school Social Studies and English teacher. He taught for many years, and at the age old 29, advanced to the position of assistant principal. All because of the positive influences he had up until this point. As our loyal Owensboro Catholic football fans know well, Bill Boehm, football manager, has been on the OC football sidelines for many years. And for the past couple of years, he’s had a sidekick who can always be found nearby, Brady Clark, junior at OC. What the fans may not be aware of is the dedication and time it takes to be there. Equipment, coolers, ice, ropes, and any number of other essentials appear as if magic. The magic is the teamwork of these two hard working volunteers. Right down to the sky-blue Gatorade emulating the University of Kentucky, no detail is left undone. And when the crowd goes home, it’s a while before the lights go out. When they finally do, it’s only then that Brady and his mentor head to their homes. That much hard work has built quite the relationship between these two civic minded individuals. Each of them landing on the field as a result of life’s obstacles, Brady a neck problem, and Bill the loss of his first wife Linda in 2001 to cancer, and his second wife Ginger (fondly referred to as Mrs. Coach by the Aces) in 2020 to COVID-19. Giving back has been a gift not only to all of us, but to Brady and Bill as well. Outside of their time with the OCHS family, the two of them trek off to the University of Kentucky each year.

ATHLETICS In My Own Words Bill Boehm, OCHS Football Team Manager
I am one of the biggest supporters of Catholic High School. My first wife, Linda, worked in the school’s main office for 19 years. She died in 2001 from cancer. Our children graduated from OCHS- Brenda 1988, Bill 1990, and Brad 1992. I started my volunteer job in 2001. The new football coach Mike Lawson asked OC teacher, Miss Mac (Mary McFarland ’58), if she knew anyone who would help with the football team. She said I have the perfect fit, Bill Boehm. He loves sports and is a great supporter of this school. That is how the journey began. I have helped the football team for 23 years. I took off the COVID year in 2020, when my second wife Ginger died in August 2020. But I was welcomed back by Coach Jason Morris to continue to help. It was in June of 2021 when I received a call from Mike Clark ’85 who asked me if I could use some help. His son, Brady Clark, had just graduated from Owensboro Catholic Middle School. He was a manBill unlocking the boys’ locker room ager for the Catholic Middle School football team. He had played football, but the doctor found out that Brady had a neck problem and the doctor suggested not playing. A bad football hit could be very dangerous, and it was not worth the risk. But that turned out to be a blessing for me. Brady is a fantastic young man and a very hard worker. We make a great team working together. Hopefully, I am a good role model for him and for all the players. I pick him up each day. We each have our jobs. He gets the table and chairs out. Then he gets the ice for the coolers, and I bring out all the equipment – balls, blocking bags, ropes, and tackling dummies. We are the first ones at the field each day. I unlock doors, turn the lights on, and fill the refrigerator with bottles of water. Hydration is very important. We work hard to make sure the players get plenty of water during these hot and humid days. Game day is a long night. It is six hours at the field. We set up yard markers, put on the goal post covers, put out the tables and chairs for the coaches and TV replays. We also have Gatorade for the team on Game Day. It is a combination of Lemon Lime and Sky Blue. It is the same mixture as the University of Kentucky uses. They all seem to enjoy it. My experiences have been very rewarding. I am so thankful for Brady Clark, Coach Jason Morris, assistant coaches, and players. They have all been so respectful. I am the last to leave. I put the equipment away, clean the bottles, and take care of the locker room at the end of the day. I turn out the lights, lock the doors, and hopefully the boys have a great practice and no injuries. This job has been my therapy. I look forward to each season. I have been blessed by God my whole life. It means a lot to give back and volunteer during your lifetime. My goal each day is to do a good deed. Thank you to Owensboro Catholic High for their great job and looking for the first state championship in football. Go ACES!

In Brady’s Words What does it mean to you to be one of the OCHS football team managers? It’s one of the important parts of the team that sometimes gets overlooked, but I’m glad to be part of the team and feel like I’m helping in their success. What does it mean to you to work with someone like Bill Boehm? Being a OCS Football manager since middle school, I’ve learned a lot from Bill since getting to high school. He’s a great mentor and someone I consider a lifelong friend. What is your favorite part about working with Bill? He’s a good guy who teaches me a lot of life lessons, we have great conversations, and he treats me as one of his peers instead of just a kid.

each year. This year they went to the UK Are the UK games fun? vs EKU game, with UK winning 28-17. Oh yeah, we have a blast and I love hitting the road with Bill. We go to the KSR pregame show (this year we got to speak to Matt and the guys and they gave a shoutout to the Catholic Football team), then go to Cookout to get a burger, then we go to support the CATS!!! It’s a lot of fun.

Sarah (Englert) Schlenther, OCHS class of 2019, married Jake Schlenther on July 29, 2023. Sarah and Jake met at Murray State University in 2019, both as college freshmen. They were married at St Stephen Cathedral by Fr Mark Buckner. After graduating from Murray State University in May 2023, they moved to Richmond, KY where Sarah is pursuing a master’s degree in speech-language pathology at Eastern Kentucky University and Jake is working as a registered nurse in the CV-ICU at UK Chandler B. Hospital.
Eight OCHS Alumni were nominated to the 2023 Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce ‘40 Under 40’ based on their leadership and potential to influence our community. Each nominee was recognized as hardworking, bold, innovative, and going above and beyond to affect change in the workplace and in the community. They are executives and directors of businesses and nonprofits. Educators and farmers. Some are fourth and fifth-generation business owners while others are entrepreneurs and pioneers. Ray Zuberer ’16 Ray Zuberer III is in his second season with the Florence Y’alls of the Frontier League, an independent baseball league that also has the Evansville Otters. Zuberer was a multi-sport standout at Owensboro Catholic, then was a steady 3-year starter at Western Kentucky University, playing all over the field and being a top-notch hitter for the Hilltoppers.

Justin was welcomed into the Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame for baseball! He boasts the following accomplishments: Two-time All-American, 2009 Big East Pitcher of the Year, #2 in career starts (48), #3 in career strikeouts (305) and #3 in career wins (29). Justin and his wife Jamie have 3 boys who attend Owensboro Catholic Schools. “I’m very thankful for the years I spent in the Owensboro Catholic School system, as well as the teachers and coaches who prepared me for success on and off the field.”

Shortly after graduating college in May 2023, JT Hayden joined the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS). As a campus missionary, he was sent to the University of Texas at Dallas. In college, JT learned that around 80% of young adults between the ages of 18-24 lose their faith and stop practicing. Hearing this statistic broke his heart but fueled his decision to join FOCUS in hopes of helping just one person not become part of that statistic. His goal as a FOCUS missionary is to know Christ Jesus and fulfill His great commission. As a missionary, his days entail: leading Bible Studies, discipleship with college students, hosting events to help students encounter each other and Christ, going on mission trips, helping out on retreats, and pushing students to live out their faith through prayer, the Sacraments, and fellowship. Please pray for JT and his mission!
Kyle is a research scientist studying polar weather and climate at the University of Wisconsin–Madison Space Science and Engineering Center. His current research involves developing computer code for an upcoming NASA satellite mission called PREFIRE (the Polar Radiant Energy in the Far InfraRed Experiment). This mission is scheduled to launch in May 2024 and will provide the first systematic measurements of the radiation emitted by the Earth in the far infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, helping scientists better understand climate change impacts in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Prior to joining the University of Wisconsin, he studied the impacts of extreme weather events on the Greenland Ice Sheet, completing M.S. (2014) and Ph.D. (2019) degrees in Geography at the University of Georgia, and working as a postdoctoral associate at Rutgers University from 2019–2021. His interest in scientific research developed from his lifelong fascination with the weather growing up in Owensboro. He received a B.S. degree in Meteorology from Western Kentucky University in 2012.

standing educator, was recently named by Dare County (North Carolina) as the district’s 2023 Teacher of the Year! This prestigious award recognizes Buford’s exceptional dedication to education, innovative teaching methods, and unwavering commitment to his students’ success. Buford has been an integral part of the First Flight school community for 18 years. Hired as the music teacher at First Flight Elementary School in 2005, Buford later shifted to the upper grades. Since 2016, he has taught chorus at both First Flight Middle School and First Flight High School,

plus string instruments at the high school. Throughout his tenure, he has consistently demonstrated a passion for teaching and a genuine love for his students. John has a community-minded, collaborative approach to making sure students get what they need to survive in school and life. Buford’s dedication goes beyond the classroom. In addition to his chorus classes, he directs the middle school theater productions and champions the arts through his volunteer work. His students are given numerous opportunities to serve the community by hosting free concerts and performing at local assisted living centers. Buford’s teaching style empowers students to become their best selves. He utilizes creative teaching methods and digital tools to make learning fun. Students often begin taking his classes in sixth grade and follow him and his program through high school. The OC community requests prayers for John. After he was named Teacher of the Year, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called acute myeloid leukemia. John has a positive outlook and is feeling the love and support of his community and beyond who have showed up for him in a big way. John was a member of the OCHS band for 4 years and assisted several years after graduation with summer band camp instruction. 22

Our Senior Ring Story Beverly Rudy ’64, MeMe to Laura Lee Rudy ’24
I never thought back in 1964, my senior year, when I saved the money to purchase my OCHS ring, that some 60 years later it would be my granddaughter’s! We (Laura Lee and I) had been talking about her senior year, the traditions, activities and such when her ring conversation came up. She was uncertain, unable to decide what she wanted “maybe a necklace instead of a ring to wear at the ring Mass.” I thought about it for a while not even sure I still had mine. I found it, called her and asked her how would she feel about wearing/having your MeMe’s 60 year old, vintage, 1964 OCHS class ring. Unsure if she would think it was as cool as I did, she was silent for a second or so then asked, “Can I come over to try it on?” She seemed touched and honored! I was elated! It fits and she wore it to her Ring Mass with a second blessing, gratefully.

Gary Cecil has been named Kentucky Farmer of the Year by the Sunbelt Ag Expo.
After high school graduation, John pursued a Bachelor of Science degree at Centre College, majoring in math and physics. After completing a series of summer research experiences during college, he decided to attend graduate school in physics at the University of Kentucky. During his graduate studies, he had the opportunity to present his thesis research at seven international conferences, publish eight peer-reviewed articles, and conduct his final year of research at the Institute for Basic Science at Seoul National University in South Korea. His work focused primarily on finding new states of matter in quantum spin systems.
Gary has been in the Ag Industry for 50 years and produces an array of crops such as: 450 acres of watermelons, 1,083 acres of corn, 882 acres of soybeans, 20 acres of mixed vegetables, and 43,000 square feet of greenhouse flowers such as plants, ferns, and mixed baskets. Cecil began his career by renting 10 acres of tobacco land and hauling hay for area farmers and ear corn to local elevators. Cecil has served on multiple committees and been part of various organizations since the start of his farming career. He was named President of the Daviess County Farm Bureau Board in 1991 and 1997, and he was awarded “2022 Favorite Farmer/Food Producer” by Owensboro Living in a people’s choice award. He was also the 2022 Kentucky Farm Bureau (KFB) Farmer of the Year.

After completing his Ph.D. in 2017, he joined a company in Southern California specialized in producing the high-resolution, infrared cameras used by NASA, the Department of Defense, and the EPA in their space telescopes and satellites. Recently, he started a YouTube channel, Dr. John (www.youtube.com/@DrJohnDev), with the hope of connecting science and math education to the technologies that surround us in modern society. Some recent topics he has explored include analyzing the motion of a rocket launch and understanding the physics behind the atom bomb. This video project revolves around his belief that education should extend beyond degrees and diplomas, especially in the rapidly evolving technological landscape. His goal is to inspire a lifelong, scientific curiosity in people of all ages. John wants to thank the inspiring teachers and supportive friends he had in the Owensboro Catholic Schools. He says his experiences with Owensboro Catholic not only helped him along his educational journey but also gave him inspiration to share his knowledge with others. “Both online and offline, it’s incredible how much support and encouragement I have received from this community.” OWENSBOROCATHOLIC.ORG

Mandatum Mass In August 1990, Pope Saint John Paul II issued the apostolic constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae, or From the Heart of the Church. This was a document that governed Catholic higher education. One of the aspects of this document was that everyone who teaches theology at a Catholic college or university would be required to take an oath of fidelity to the Catholic Church, called the Mandatum. This oath was a promise made by them to teach only what the Church teaches. While this was only a requirement for professors, the teachers of our Theology department at OCHS, wanting to express their fidelity to the Church, decided they would all seek to make this oath at a school Mass at OCHS. As a theology department there is nothing more important than being faithful to the Church’s teachings. Also joining the theology department in making this oath was the new principal George Powell.
