OCS MISSION STATEMENT Owensboro Catholic Schools share in the mission of the Church in communion with families and parishes to provide excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics which prepares students to become responsible individuals as well as members of their family, Church, and community.
During the fourth quarter of each year, countless hours are spent analyzing the schools’ financial needs and developing a budget. As you can probably guess, this is not an easy task. This year, with the significant change in personnel among the leadership team, many individuals were involved in the process to educate them on the finances, discuss the needs of our students, and build a proposed budget. Wanting to include a broad group of stakeholders in the process, these important Tracy Conkright financial details needed to be shared. CEO Throughout this process, we always endeavor to keep tuition as low as we can, while continuing to provide a rich, faith-based education to as many children in our community as possible. Through meaningful faith experiences, students see their faith come alive and develop and strengthen their connection to God. Our mission is to educate the whole child: mind, body, and spirit. Many people have the misconception that our budget Julie Garvin is fully funded by tuition and parish subsidies, but it Controller is not. Each year we rely on donations from the community to cover the cost of educating each child. Tuition funds about 65% of salaries, and as you know, in addition to salaries there are many other expenses incurred to operate the school system. Those include tuition assistance, technology, textbooks, and other classroom expenses, utilities, maintenance on our aging buildings, and property insurance. We have approximately $9 million in unrestricted operating expenses each year. Our parishes generously contribute $3 million annually and net tuition revenue covers approximately $5 million. In addition to the $1 million shortage is planned and unplanned capital expenditures, such as replacing a failing HVAC unit at the high school or replacing the roof at the middle school, must be paid. Our annual OC Connect fundraising efforts, along with donations for special projects, are excellent ways you can share your material blessings and make a difference for every student. No gift is too small. Our OCS friends and families have always been very generous, and donations continue to carry us through. Other ways to support our mission include donating your time to help with or enjoy any of our fundraising events. A big source of income that supports our K-12 endeavors is Bingo. You can volunteer to work in the concession stand or at an entrance gate at your favorite sporting event. You can also buy Scrip cards for items you would normally purchase.
Preparing Leaders, Achievers, and Believers
We encourage each family to support their parish as well as the school. Our parishes’ generous annual support of OCS illustrates the commitment our pastors have for Catholic education. Please remember both your parish and OCS when you are planning for the future. Both can benefit from bequests in your Will or Trust, or designations from your IRA in the form of a qualified charitable distributions or beneficiary designation.
Christ is the Reason for This School
There are countless ways to make a meaningful difference in this Catholic community. Please call the Central Office if you have questions or need to be connected to a program near and dear to your heart. We thank you for your continued support!

different. The climate and culture here are unlike anything I have seen across the state of Kentucky, and until you experience it, you really cannot appreciate or understand what a special place Owensboro Catholic is. The first thing that stood out to me was when I met with teachers and staff individually before the school year began and quickly realized the bond they have with the school. The pride and sense of belonging to something important that they conveyed through our conversations made an impression on me. I knew at that point I had an important job to keep the tradition of the green and white alive and well. Once school began, I was somewhat overwhelmed by the school spirit here. I try to stand out front every morning and welcome students as they enter the school. Our kids come to school every day with a smile on their faces and genuinely seem happy to be here. We have had several pep rallies this year and the student participation is 100% every time. OCHS does the best job of any school I have ever seen of giving kids a reason to want to be here. With those things being said, I began to understand the difference when we began gathering for schoolwide Mass. I had never experienced anything like that in a school setting and it impacted me as a leader. The importance of having Christ as the center of all we do and being able to share in the

THE GREEN AND WHITE n WINTER 2024
Reprinted, Message from OCS President Tom Lilly after the State Championship Game In nearly every form of competition, the representatives of the winning team always react the same way. The last out of the World Series and the last seconds on the clock of the Super Bowl look the same every single year for the winning team. From athletic competitions to band competitions, and all the other competitions Catholic schools sponsor, the school community wants our children to feel the euphoria of seeing their hard work succeed and be publicly acknowledged. There’s nothing wrong with that. There is nothing harder on a parent than to watch their hard-working, dedicated child apparently “fail” in their goals, or even realize they don’t have the same skill level or a gift in a certain area of life that’s not going to be acknowledged. But that’s just part of growing mature in faith. Sometimes you give life everything you’ve got and there’s a disappointing outcome. How we respond to defeat reveals more about the real application of our faith life than how we respond to the shot going in at the buzzer. That’s why years ago I started watching teams (players

and coaches) on the losing side of the field instead of the winning side of the field. You learn a lot more that way. This same line of thinking can be extended to how adults react as well. Connecting everything to faith is how we can be significantly different in the Owensboro Catholic School System. Our faith should be represented in EVERY area of our life. It’s a lot easier being holy in church on Sunday than on the losing end of a competition. I don’t have my head in the sand. I know sometimes we DON’T always represent our faith well on ball fields and in competition. We’re all still human beings. But I’m so proud of how hard our coaches, parents, and staff are trying to teach students that there are many blessings in victory AND in defeat. The community becomes more important to middle school and high school students, already struggling to find their place. But it’s such a blessing to see how hard our Catholic school’s coaches and teachers work to build something more important in the community than JUST a big win. Last year Principal Settles interviewed the exiting senior class, one at a time throughout the year, and each one said they had at least one adult in the building they felt like they could turn to. Every role is important in this community. Our coaches are also trying to build that same community atmosphere. It’s not just the best way to maximize a student’s potential, but it’s also the best way to maximize a student’s future potential. Losing hurts. Time heals. But the role model of our schools left us an invaluable lesson on that cross. The losses teach us so much more about life. Losing can lead to a much greater victory for us down the road if we learn from it, and we learn to put it in perspective. After the sting of last Friday, it was so uplifting to see coaches, parents, and even the students themselves put an extraordinary effort into responding to their opponent with class, dignity, and respect. I am so thankful for all of you during this season for the many ways you make Owensboro Catholic Schools such a winning organization. The hard work. The sacrifice. The commitment to excellence. The accountability. We have many reasons to be thankful for each other and for this Catholic community that works so hard to care for each other, even when we lose! ♠
You always wish and hope that your child, no matter what sport, can make it to state and play in the championship game. Most people only saw our team on the field but as a senior mom, I want you to know more about our seniors and this team. Many did not see the brotherhood this team shared. During the summer, boys would attend the Sacrament of Reconciliation together as well as Adoration, and many started attending youth groups in the middle of the season. Teammates attended the Easter Vigil to support their QB who decided with his family to go through the RCIA program to join the Catholic faith. They attended numerous middle school games to support them and many even went to watch them at state. JV games were always attended by the players to support their teammates. Many seniors participated in the GRADSA (Green River Area Down Syndrome Association) Buddy Walk to support a classmate’s sister or the kids they worked with at Buddy Ball last spring. Upperclassmen grabbed the younger players to go work out on a Sunday afternoon to help them get better as a player. Seniors planned together to make sure a senior player who tore an ACL was able to play at least one play on Senior night. The excitement on their faces was just pure happiness to see their teammate on the field. They worked together to start back up the FCA chapter at OCHS! Yes, there is much more to our football players than you see on the field, and the seniors and their teammates are a special group that will always be part of our football history. I want them to be remembered for the fine young men they are and the pride they bring to many, especially our school and football program. Thank you, OCHS Football, for all the memories on and off the field and for making this Senior Mom proud.

ACES FACES Travis Owsley ’06 Travis Owsley is an extraordinary individual who plays diverse and impactful roles within the Owensboro community. Serving as the founder of Beverly’s Hearty Slice, the Director of Recreation at Genesis Senior Living, and the Assistant Basketball Coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College, Travis has demonstrated a profound commitment to enriching the lives of those around him. Married to Lexie Owsley, the couple is blessed with a beautiful four-year-old daughter named Noni. In response to the pressing issues of homelessness, gun violence, and drug overdose during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Travis founded Beverly’s Hearty Slice in honor of his mother. The nonprofit aims to address these challenges by providing free meals to those in need and a chance to get off the street for a night. Travis initiated Beverly’s Hearty Slice from the ground up, personally funding it during its initial months. By ordering five Little Caesar’s Pizzas each week, each containing eight slices, his goal was to provide meals for 40 people weekly. Travis’s endeavors gained the attention of other generous individuals, leading to collaborative efforts to expand Beverly’s Hearty Slice. The nonprofit has experienced substantial growth, now catering to the needs of over 1,000 members in the Owensboro Community and even extending its outreach to parts of Boston. Travis attributes much of his personal and professional success to his time at Owensboro Catholic High School. He expresses deep gratitude for the institution, stating “Catholic high saved my life.” His time at OCHS instilled in him good morals, values, discipline, and a strong work ethic. Travis aims to pay forward the love and support he received from teachers and coaches at OCHS by leaving a lasting impact on the individuals he serves today.

Growth of the Annual Appeal
is Our Focus in 2024
For most of us, with each new year comes a new set of goals. I find it motivating to hear others’ New Year resolutions. Goals help us maintain our focus on the things that are important. For 2024, the Forbes Health/One Poll survey found the most popular goals included: improved fitness, improved finances, and improved mental health. While all these are worthy goals, what distinguishes a Catholic School education is that we want our students and families to have goals for their faith formation, their relationship to Christ and the Church. We hope our goals include intentional prayer, parish engagement, and acts of kindness and generosity. We want goals that prioritize Christ’s will for our lives. Whatever your goals may be, there is an Owensboro Catholic School community praying for the success of our families and our alumni. In the Advancement Office, we have set very practical goals that depend on the generosity of donors. Catholic schools are educating tomorrow’s parishioners. As we step into a new annual appeal year with our OC Connect campaign, I would like to share a goal with you and ask YOU to be financially generous, so we can achieve it! When we share our goals with others, not only does it increase our accountability, but we also get a sense of excitement and motivation towards hitting those goals. The goal that I would like to share with you is to increase the annual appeal dollars we raise in 2024. In 2023, the OC Connect appeal raised over $225,000.00 in unrestricted income, exceeding our goal by 7%. It is my hope this year to do the same. Please review where your class ranked in giving last year and help elevate that ranking to the top of the list! Become an ambassador for your class and assist promote the appeal within your social circles and social media. Encourage your classmates and friends of the school to make their inaugural gift. 22
THE GREEN AND WHITE n WINTER 2024
Natalie Hayden ’88 OCS Director of Advancement
270-686-8896 natalie.hayden@owensborocatholic.org
The money raised through the annual appeal are unrestricted dollars that are needed to cover the disparity in the school budget you read about in the opening column from Tracy Conkright and Julie Garvin. How can you help us achieve the goal? 1. Become a first-time donor. 2. Increase your annual contribution by 7%. 3. Come call with us in March. 4. Spread the word about this important appeal. The dollars you contribute have a powerful impact on the lives we serve. These dollars are needed and necessary! That is why it is such a blessing to work here. It is a gift to me that I get to work with so many generous people. I get to meet new donors who bless us with contributions because they are so grateful for the sacrifice and commitment that goes into providing a Catholic School education. We are blessed by Pastors who appreciate the daily experiential opportunities students are exposed to and help us find new ways to integrate them into our school days. We also have involved, engaged parents who help us guide the future of our community. These are very exciting times for Owensboro Catholic High School. There’s never been a more important time to get involved than now. Our future is dependent on it. Your investment in this process is significant. Cheers to meeting your personal and spiritual goals in 2024! !

He added. “Lastly, this vision coincides with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) emphasis on the three-year Eucharistic Revival in the U.S.”
The discussions of creating a more sacred space of worship evolved from changes taking place in the way students experience Catholic worship at the high school. “We have always included experiences of faith into our academic process,” said Theology Department Chair Lisa Jarboe Higdon, a 2002 graduate. “But as students get older, we’re placing more emphasis on the routines and experiences of what it means to live a Christian life. ADVANCEMENT the other sacraments of the Church. This focus constantly reinforces to students that love for the Eucharist should drive everything they do, in school and out. Every student spends time in the chapel at least once a week, and Eucharistic Adoration is available before school each day. Parents join students and teachers for Adoration while students are on their three-day senior retreat. Sophomore Mary Ava Evans summed up this perspective, saying, “Adoration is a very important aspect of my school day. Each morning, I go to the chapel and spend 10-20 minutes in the real and true presence of Jesus. This brings me so much peace and guidance that inspires me to live my life for the glory of God. During my Theology class, we also go to the chapel to pray together as a community. A new chapel would allow more students to gather together at once, in the presence of the Lord, as a family in Christ.”
“We have been very fortunate and appreciative that nearly $750,000 has been contributed or pledged to the project over the last year, but we’re still about $1 million short of raising the funds needed to complete our Plan A.” Natalie Hayden ’88
another step to increase prayer opportunities for students because “we are an extension of our parishes, and one of our priorities is to develop strong Catholic routines for these students so they have a better chance of surviving the college years. These are students who we hope come back to serve as leaders in our parish communities for many years to come.” Tracy Conkright, the OCS Chief Education Officer, pointed out that moving the chapel to the new location would result in every child walking by the chapel daily each morning, and it would become more of a focal point for the community when other activities are held at the school as well as providing for easier student and parent access to the chapel. She also noted the new alumni resource center and meeting room would be directly under the new chapel. “Either way, our students come out on top,” said Conkright. “Our faith has always been a priority in our schools, but we don’t have the existing capital to take on construction projects that aren’t essential to our infrastructure. But I am never surprised by how strongly our giving community rises to the occasion when they see how our students are served by their generosity. We are already deeply appreciative for those families who have responded to this project, and we want to ensure we’ve done everything we can to communicate ‘Plan A’ and provide people the opportunity to support it before a final decision is made.”

Fr. Danny Goff used the rest of the money to purchase paint, but he actually did the painting himself, which he finished in about a week.” He said the move to give high school students a larger and more sacred worship space is

Spending mornings with Jesus in Adoration gives students ‘new mindset’ at Catholic High By Julia Marshall, Special to the Western Kentucky Catholic
Beginning in June 2022 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called for a Eucharistic Revival among the nation. All members of the Catholic Church are invited to deepen their devotion and faith within the Blessed Sacrament. Through Eucharistic Adoration, we can be physically present with Jesus who is physically present with us in the Eucharist. The theology department at Owensboro Catholic High School made available daily Adoration, welcoming all students to participate in the Revival. The goal is to deepen a community’s faith and relationship with God. Kristin Dorth, theology teacher, encourages students to participate in Adoration to have still moments: “We offer Adoration because the world is such a busy place and it is easy to get caught up in our phones and responsibilities.” Adoration offers an opportunity to create quiet in our lives so that we can hear the voice of God more easily. In a world where students are constantly being distracted and tempted to turn away from faith, teachers hope giving students the opportunity to grow their commitment to faith will help to continue to foster their beliefs. Adoration begins around 7:30 a.m. in the school’s chapel daily. When the Eucharistic Host is placed in the monstrance on the altar, the Blessed Sacrament becomes exposed, meaning the body, blood, soul, and divinity of God is fully present. Students can experience prayer in a more intimate way, truly in the presence of Him. Daniela Guido, a senior, says Adoration to her is, “A place where she can go to fully give herself to God through her prayer and worship.” Members of the theology department offer to take turns sitting in each morning and leading in prayer. Theology teacher Lisa Higdon finds inspiration when spending her mornings in prayer: “As a teacher, I have been inspired by the number of students who continue to show up in the morning, consistently seeking it, and making it a priority to spend time with Jesus. That gives me a lot of hope for the future and gives me encouragement to strive for this in my own life.”

The theology teachers’ desire to help us deepen our faith, shows their commitment to the Eucharistic Revival and helping us recommit to Christ. Each morning is something different from live worship music to praying the rosary as a group. Students become united when praying together. Senior Tutt Carrico thinks praying as a group keeps him focused: “When praying as a community we can share our thoughts and have a deeper connection to the Lord.” Students are encouraged to attend even if it is just for a couple minutes. Students such as sophomore Mayme Powell have been able to grow their relationship with God outside of theology class. Powell expresses the new priority in her life as well as a positive outlook on school mornings: “Going to Adoration before school has completely changed my life. My mornings used to be full of stress and chaos. Now, my mornings are spent with Christ, and I leave with a new mindset for the day.” Around 8:05 a.m. the Host is taken out of the monstrance and placed back into the tabernacle. Students head to class and will now begin their day with a sense of fulfillment and tranquility. Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, “God is a friend of silence.” Let us sit with our Friend and just be in the moment. We are all invited to sit in the presence of our living God and take a gaze into our faith. In this we can truly look at Jesus as He looks at us, imitate Christ, and invite others to answer His call. ♠
