Tow Professional: Volume 13, Issue 8

Page 1

2025 is coming in hot! Are you ready?

2024 has been a blur to say the least, as we bring you our 2nd to last issue of the year! I would say where did the time go, but I know it went to life. The trade show season was busy from the PWOF Florida show that gets the year kicked off, to the busy month of September that included 3 shows. I traveled the entire month of September to show my support, not only with marketing, but to be at the Association shows to support the ones that pour back into our industry! Tow Professional was proud to be the sole media source to cover with marketing support the RPNC Mid Atlantic Tow Expo, TRAO Midwest Regional and was on site for the Wall of the Fallen.

Fourteen years ago, on our cover, Tow Professional had an idea to list the fallen to honor their commitment and sacrifice to the industry. We wanted to do more for the industry during those cash strapped days of startup. We chose to support the Survivor Fund with space in our magazine, a FREE 2-page spread in every issue to encourage support for the Survivor Fund. This has given us a way to give back to the families of the fallen, and for that I feel blessed. We ask for your support. Going forward, we would like to rededicate these pages to families of the fallen, giving you the national editorial space to honor your loved one in your words to their tow families. This will be followed by a 1/2page island ad donated in each issue to drive support for the survivor fund.

As always, our Fuel for Thought from DJ Harrington, offers this year a gift set that can be a checkup from the neck. This is a prescription I recommend from the Tow Doctor, if you want to set 2025 on fire with new zest and purpose. Dan Messina with his “Insightful Talk,” and in this issue Michele brings us an amazing story of Kisten Klemenz-Westervelt, and the reason her family started B&W Towing. A tremendous tale of courage, and fortitude, and love for industry.

In this issue we take a deep dive into Service Trucks with offerings from Dynamic, Jerr-Dan, and Worldwide showcasing some of the latest equipment make you stand out! We look at the latest products from Towmate, Zips, Custer Products, Collons Dollies, Golight, and Phoenix USA just to name a few with information from each manufacturer on the top products to have when outfitting your service truck.

My purpose for continuing to do this over the years was simple, I believe that you must pour back into what you take from. This is why I believe in being on site as an owner & publisher to support our associations that give back to the industry. I was blown away in Chattanooga to receive an award from the International Towing & Recovery Museum for my ongoing support of the museum and survivor fund. I am more than appreciative, but just happy to be part of an industry that is like family!

God Bless our Tow Professionals!

NEW Hold-A-Rotor Slips on and Locks

Disc Brake Rotors in Place on 12mm & 14mm Wheel Bearing Studded Hubs

Steck Manufacturing introduces the New Hold-a-Rotor™ Tool Kit (STC71000). The Hold-a-Rotor is designed to secure automotive and light truck disc brake rotors in place during repairs. Because these professional-grade plugs are design to fit the most common 12-millimeter (green) and 14-millimeter (red) wheel mounting studs, the Hold-a Rotor works on more than 90 percent of domestic and European vehicles. These tools help speed up technician repair times during brake pad, wheel bearing jobs, and other wheel and brake

repairs that require the removal of the rotor. The plugs are made in the USA from a super-duty durable polymer for long life. They easily store in a drawer, with each size quickly identified by its unique color. Ideal for auto repair technicians, tire and break repair shops, car dealers, body shops, auto parts stores and DIY-ers making repairs to their own vehicles.

“Capped or chromed encapsulated hex nuts can’t hold the rotor in place without the wheel. So, techs must search around for a spare hex nut with the correct diameter and thread pitch, said Milton

Specialty Tool Group General Manager

Jeffrey Del Rossa . The NEW Hold-aRotor, quickly and easily slips on and off one-handed, securing the rotor to the hub face. It keeps the rotor in its installation position, preventing it from wobbling and causing difficulty fitting brake pads and calipers, reducing repair times,” said Del Rossa.

The Hold-a-Rotor Kit is available from Milton Industries Specialty Tool Group’s Steck Manufacturing, ProMAXX Tool, and LTI Tools. For more information on the NEW Hold-a-Rotor, visit: steckmanufacturing.com.

Women OF TOWING

Watch Me!

There is a saying in this industry that we meet people by accident. But sometimes, we break down and then start our own company. That’s exactly what happened to this month’s Women of Towing feature, Kristen Klemenz-Westervelt. Kristen and her now husband, Blaine, had a vehicle breakdown and had to wait for an extended period to get help along with the cost of having a down vehicle. He said, “If I had a truck, I would start my own company.” Blaine had a truck and the rest, as they say, is history!

B&W Towing LLC was established on September 15, 2009, in Painted Post, NY. The journey was far from easy. One of her most difficult challenges was when Kristen sought a loan for their first tow truck. The process extended well over several months due to numerous challenges. The local competition was formidable, and its influence created hesitancy with the REDEC regarding the loan approval. Kristen had to repeatedly submit and revise the necessary paperwork before finally securing the funding. Her passion, persistence, and patience ultimately led to her success, which is evident today. It all started with that one truck and has grown to twelve tow trucks, twenty-one employees and two locations. I asked Kristen what advice she would give to someone who is starting in the towing industry. “Be strong. This industry is not for the weak, but it is the most rewarding one I have found.” You have to be tough—both physically and mentally—because there will be challenges that push you. But the satisfaction of breaking through those barriers, proving yourself, and thriving in towing is priceless. You will need resilience, but that strength

will carry you far and make you stand out. Trust yourself and know that your perseverance is your greatest asset.

Kristen notes that even today, she still catches a look of surprise on people's faces when she jumps out of her truck, takes charge of a scene, or orders equipment. It is a reminder of the lingering stereotypes women face in the towing industry. However, she is encouraged by the progress she’s seen. Women are steadily gaining recognition for their contributions, not just behind the desk but on the front lines as well.

As more women step into leadership roles and demonstrate their expertise, the industry will continue to evolve, becoming more inclusive and diverse. When asked for tips on juggling work and home life, Kristen emphasizes, “Do not be afraid to delegate tasks and ask for help when needed.” Trying to do everything yourself can lead to burnout, but with a strong support system in place, it becomes much more manageable. Kristen adds,“With the right support, you can handle anything.” It is essential to rely on your

team, both at work and at home. By sharing responsibilities and leaning on others, women in the towing industry can find some balance and continue to thrive in all areas of their lives.

I asked Kristen what her most rewarding experience in the towing industry was. She said, “Watching not only my kids but my entire crew grow, personally and professionally. They have all become successful in every aspect of their careers and personal lives and that is the best feeling.” Jokingly, I asked her what two things do

you always have with you besides your phone. Her answer came back quickly, “a notepad and pen :) always!”….. and no one should do without those in the towing industry!

As a planner and goal setter myself, I am always fascinated by learning what drives others and what their goals are. Kristen’s vision for the future is particularly inspiring. She is not only focused on the growth of her business but also on the legacy she is building for her family. Kristen’s next big goal is to open a third location and, perhaps even

more importantly, to watch her two sons grow into management roles within the business. For her, it is about creating something lasting, both for her family and for the industry she is so passionate about.

Kristen nailed it when I asked her what she says to those who doubt her or what she can do in the industry. “I heard for years you can not do this from friends, family, and others. I have always had two words: Watch Me!”

And, we are watching you, Kristen Klemenz-Westervelt! Keep going!

Finally, it’s over!

For the last 100 days we’ve watched two people fight for the leadership role of our country, and many times it was not pretty. It shows me just how split our country is, and now we will have to work hard to get back to normal. Oh, does anyone know what normal looks like? The question is what kind of impact President Trump will have on your company when he’s president.

All of us know the price of gas has a major impact on business, and I am finding out that insurance is also a problem. Supporters and analysts have found several areas where this administration could have significant impacts on small businesses.

Here are a few things that could happen:

1. Economic Growth and Job Creation – Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and jobs act will be implemented again. This will stimulate economic growth and increase job creation.

2. Judicial Appointments – Trump appointed three supreme court justices. Working with congress, which majority is republican, should allow us to get things passed that will help your business.

3. Tax Reform – reducing corporate taxes and lowering taxes for

President-elect Donald Trump speaking at a rally

individuals should boost the economy. Tax reform should give you more money to invest and build your business.

4. Energy Independence – Trump’s war cry was “drill, baby drill” should lift restrictions on fossil fuel, and expand oil, gas, and coal industries. This should have a big impact on reducing gas costs for your trucks.

5. Deregulation – Part of Trump’s

economic strategy was to reduce federal regulations. Their objective is to get out of the way and let small businesses run and grow their business.

6. Individual Employment – Through tax cuts and deregulation this should help small businesses to hire as needed.

Most small business owners know their local politicians and probably contribute to their campaigns. It’s usually not in the DNA of a tower to get involved in politics but it’s a good thing that will benefit you in the future if you can do it. This past election shocked the world, and it will affect things at a local level. You may not like

INSIGHTFULTALK

the outcome, but in my opinion, it will help your business. When I owned my tow company, my wife and I were very involved in our local politics. My tow company did only private property, so we were always under the microscope. From police departments in the Dallas area to the Dallas City Council, we knew everyone, and they knew about

my tow company.

As you know, towers always have stories to tell, so here is my favorite story. Years ago, when President Bush was running for a second term, he sent Dick Chaney to Dallas for a fundraiser. It was a small audience of about 30 people. Because of my local connections, my wife and I were invited

to attend. When we arrived, we noticed sitting in the front row was Ebby Holiday, owner of one of the largest real-estate companies in Texas, and Bo Pilgram who owned a frozen chicken company. I’m sure they were big doners. When Chaney arrived, the 1st thing he did was give them both a big hug. I looked at my wife and told her I wanted to be like them at a local level.

My wife and I supported two local city council people because they lived in my neighborhood. We wrote checks, but it wasn’t a billion dollars, but those donations did benefit us. When all you do is private property towing, we needed all the help we could get. Towers that wanted a raise had to make a presentation to 7 members of the city council. That group were members of a transportation committee for the Dallas City Council. It so happened that our friend was the head of that city council committee. My wife and I sat in the audience to hear the presentation. As the meeting started, the tow company making the presentation was a partner from the past, so I knew them well.

As they were presenting the head of the city committee was also our friend, and when she saw us in the audience she got up, walked into the audience

and gave my wife and I a big hug. Then she went back to the presentation. As the meeting progressed, another city council member joined the meeting. Also, a friend of ours. When he saw us in the audience he got up while the presentation was going on and came into the audience and gave us a hug. We realized then that we had become Ebby Holiday and Bo Pilgram at a small level. I can’t tell you how rewarding that was to be recognized in front of

other city council people, but most of all in front of our X partners. Stuff like that went a long way for our business. I’m not telling you to write checks and certainly not millions, but you should always know who the key politicians are that could impact your business. Get involved and support your state association and write them checks necessary for them to fight bills in Texas that impact our business. I just saw a list of the top 100 things our president elect will work on are (Drill, baby drill) which will have an impact on gas prices, and he will also start deporting illegals which will make us safer. When you are in the private property towing business those are huge.

I’m sorry I bored you with a long story, but I wanted to encourage all of you to get involved in your local politics and work with your state association. In my opinion, this election will have a good effect on your employees and your bottom line.

FUEL4THOUGHT

past few years, I thought it prudent to explain to the executive director that I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre in December. After over-hearing my conversation with that director, my wife presented me with 4 cases of books from my office. She asked, “Can you sell them while you’re in Mississippi? It sure could help pay some medical bills.” So, folks, here’s my offer.

I’ll give you a FREE copy of the book, Race to the Finish Line, Creating Winning Customer Relationships, PLUS a FREE copy of the How Money Works book, now over 500,000 in print. Here’s the offer. I’ll give you both books FREE, IF you’ll buy a thumb drive filled with 3 ½ hours’ worth of my training. Included on this thumb drive are: “Time”, which is about God giving us 86,400 seconds each day.

It’s amazing how some of us spend those 86,400 seconds that we have daily. How do you spend yours? This short video produced by Disney is very thought-provoking but lasts about 6 minutes in length.

Then there’s the “Dash” poem, written by Linda Ellis, the famous writer but performed by me in a cemetery. A dash between the years shows the date of when a person is born and the date when a person has died. What’s to be remembered is the dash, all the years and events of the person’s life between birth and death. It’s not about the car, house or cash but how you lived your “Dash” and how you’ll be remembered. Unfortunately, over the last couple years, we’ve had several towing professionals pass on. You probably can mention some of them right now, and they will certainly be missed. Many were your friends and mentors within the towing industry that makes all of us want to emulate their work ethics. What really matters is how they lived their DASH.

Added to this thumb drive are over 28 mini sales meetings which run about 3 minutes in length for each of them. A good suggestion here, you can plan to play one at the start of your meeting,

and one at the end. All those meetings are done by me and full of good business information. The thumb drive also includes the “Eye Can”. Even the last four letters of the word, American, has “I can” in it. It makes everyone listening to it leave with an “I CAN” attitude.

Also, on this thumb drive there are 4 leadership classes which are perfect for anyone whom you might be molding into a future manager. A big piece of this is phone training from the person answering the phone to the salesperson using customer care. Yes, even which ear you use has a bearing on the outcome of any call.

Now, let me tell you about “Words to Live By” on this thumb drive. That training focuses on an all-day meeting. It’s not focusing on just a few people within the company but on everyone who works for a company. It was broken down into two sessions which allowed any owner to bring in food and soft drinks. Here I am revealing what happened one day during this training at a company. A frustrated man on the verge of losing his cool walked over and asked, “When will this blanketyblank meeting be over?” A little taken back, I quickly responded, “In about

55 minutes.” Without hesitation, he retorted, “It better be. I don’t have time for this feel-good crap.”

It takes about six to seven minutes to hear that segment. A short background about my producer, Bob Chesney, a voice and recording professional from Los Angeles, California also does recordings for Tony Robbins too. Bob literally works for some heavy-hitting speakers. When I had finished with my training that day, I picked up all my props and headed to my rental car. As I approached my car, standing next to it was the same man who asked how much longer I was going to speak. Not really looking forward to what he was going to say this time, the man revealed that his 16-year-old daughter had left home only eight weeks ago and was living with another family about four streets away. She wasn’t coming back because of what he had said to his daughter. No, I didn’t sell him a copy of “Words to Live By” that day. After hearing his

plight, I literally gave him a copy of it because I felt sorry for him and his wife. Three weeks later, the owner said that man had the most improved attitude on his team. He had dropped the copy I had given him into the mailbox for his daughter. Four days later when he came home from work, his daughter was there crying at the kitchen table with his wife. She wanted to come home. Folks, that’s only one reason why I love, “Words to Live By”.

The entire 3 ½ hours of the thumb drive is filled with wonderful stuff that helps employees and their relationships. Also, included on this thumb drive is what I delivered for the PGA and the professional golf association. Just a few years back, I gave all their members a copy of “Words to Live By”. Here’s how they use it. They play it before they interview new team members. If prospective interviewees like what they see in this training, then they get hired because they know they will be faithful

team members. Since it’s worked for the PGA and other industries, it can work for you and your business too. And all of this is a perfect fit for helping you hire and assemble the right towing professionals for your business. All you need to do is try it.

Folks, the whole package is $50. That includes the thumb drive with all the training, plus the books. All you must do is send me a text message with your contact information, and I’ll pay for shipping and handling. I’ll include an invoice with your package. After receiving shipment, if you feel all this isn’t worth $50, just send everything back to me. No questions asked. This will help me get rid of some books and lower my medical bills. So, it is a “winwin” for both of us. Getting your order processed is easy. Email your contact information to: dj@djsays.com, or you can text me your request and contact information to: 770-301-4122.

See you on the next podcast.

“FULL SPEED AHEAD” AT CODE RED TOWING

Success does not always follow a straight line

Every now and then, we hear an old-timer complain about the lack of perseverance and work ethic in the next generation, the one that will be the face of the industry in 20 years— “if they manage to hang around that long!” These old-timers need to meet Mark and Jami Boisvert. Their story has more perseverance, more back-breaking, unremitting work, and more twists and turns than many people see in a lifetime. And they are part of that new generation of towers that will be taking the industry into the future in the coming years.

MARK’S STORY

Mark’s father started a tow company in Idaho when Mark was 16. He went to work for his father at a young age. A lot of stories end here with father starts business, son or daughter take over, changes are made, and so on. However, that is not Mark’s story.

“This is a tough business to get into,” Mark says. “And I’m not talking about the cost of trucks or insurance. Especially when you’re first starting out, you’re not used to being on call and taking that truck all over the place. It’s demanding, more so than most jobs. I did it until I was about 23, but like most 23-year-olds, I wanted to get away from my dad’s business and do something on my own. So, I went out to the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota during one of the booms, in 2016, and did the whole oil and gas thing.” But as fate or his towing blood would have it, his boss in North Dakota learned that Mark had grown up in the towing business. For whatever mysterious reason, this man had always wanted to start a towing company. As the boom petered out, he began laying people off, but he held onto Mark. “He got this bright idea,” Mark continues, “and he told me that we should start up a towing business. There I was, back in towing and recovery. I wasn’t even out of it for a couple of years.” Mark’s boss set him up in Watford City, North Dakota and had him run the operation.

Business was good for a while, and when it began to slow down along with the North Dakota economy, Mark worked in the mechanic shop fixing

tires or whatever needed to be done, just to keep the doors open, and keep the dream of their towing company alive. “I tell everyone, they haven’t worked until they’ve worked in North Dakota in negative 60-degree weather. When you’re pulling that cold metal cable, I don’t care what kind of gloves you’re wearing, you must keep jumping back in the truck to warm your fingers or they’ll freeze off. And just try to work in that weather with a long beard. It’s frozen to the touch, and it feels like it’s going to break your face off.” After about six months of this, Mark moved back to Boise to do asphalt work. “I came back that night, and I started the asphalt job the next day,” Mark says, “I spent the summer at that job.”

JAMI JUMPS IN

However, while he was still working in North Dakota, Mark and his wife Jami had been talking about towing. “I swear I don’t know why,” he says, “but Jami and I started looking at the Rocky Mountain Wrecker Sales website (https://www.rmwsales.com/). We saw a 2001 Ford F550 wrecker that was all different colors, probably one of the ugliest old used trucks I’d ever seen.” Even so, Jami went to her credit union and applied for a loan for that truck.

She and Mark were sure she wouldn’t get it. However, Fate wasn’t going to give up on Mark. The credit union called them, and they had a decision to make. They were down to their last bit of savings, but they let it ride on a loan for the tow truck. “I came back from North Dakota, and we went down to Salt Lake and picked up this truck,” Mark remembers. “That was in early July, 2017. And Chris at Rocky Mountain was probably the best guy I could have hoped for in that situation. He helped us with everything. He even gave us some special deals on equipment to fit the truck.” With their purchase made, Mark and Jami headed home with their “new” truck.

MAKING IT WORK

At that time, they didn’t even have a yard. Mark contacted some people he knew from working with his father. They were able and willing to help Mark out by taking calls during nights and weekends. Mark, back in Boise now, was still doing asphalt. He did asphalt during the day, from about five in the morning to four in the afternoon. And then, his towing company would have a list of calls for him. At the time, he was 26. For about six months, they had to sell almost everything he and

SERVICE TRUCKS

Jami owned, just to keep going. “You name it,” Mark says, “guns, vehicles, everything, letting it all ride on this company.” And finally, it became clear that he had to go somewhere else so that he could earn more money. Before he left to do that, he was able to hire one of his buddies to keep the towing business back home operating.

BACK TO THE BAKKEN

Mark headed back to the Bakken oil fields in North Dakota. He even ended up working for the same boss there. When the trucking part of the business

got slow, he went back to work for a different towing company in Watford City. Not either/or, though—at the same time. “I worked 24/7,” Mark says, matter-of-factly. In 2018, Mark’s boss approached him about purchasing Code Red Towing. Mark and Jami said yes to this new venture. Mark met a man on Facebook that had a 1993 Kenworth T600 for sale. They made a handshake deal for that heavy duty, and Mark promised to pay it off within a year. One man can’t drive two trucks, of course, so Mark asked a buddy to come to North Dakota to help him. Winter was coming, just to make things more interesting. During this time, another friend, freshly laid off, called and said, “Hey, I’m coming to work for you Monday.” Mark let him know that he couldn’t really afford to hire him. But his friend simply showed up and started working with “two buddies I know that towed with my dad for years and years.” Mark wasn’t the only one working around the clock. Jami ran the business while he was working in North Dakota. Meanwhile, she worked a full-time job and took care of their children. “Just working in the oil field helped make some extra money, and that’s what paid for everything over in Boise,” Mark

says. “In fact, I got another truck and was able to hire another guy for my business back in Idaho while I was in North Dakota. After a while, I went back to Boise to run our towing business.” Mark continued to travel back and forth between home and North Dakota, and family finances finally began to improve. They even had some money in the bank as the end of a long 2018 approached.

FULL SPEED AHEAD

After that, Mark says, it’s been full speed ahead. “Since 2018, we just went full bore, running down new accounts and getting as many trucks on the road as possible.” Today, Code Red still has a base in Watford City that serves customers within a 75-mile radius, including the important western North Dakota oil towns of Dickinson and Williston. On the Idaho side, in the area known locally as the Treasure Valley, they have a yard in Boise, one in Caldwell, and two in Nampa. Caldwell is also the home of the shop they use to repair their own equipment, saving on the cost of repair and maintenance. Today, the company is 24 people strong, including Mark and Jami, about 18 of whom are drivers. Code Red policy puts

a lot of emphasis on training, so those operators are all either WreckMastertrained, or trained in-house by those who are.

The Code Red fleet includes 26 trucks, along with auxiliary equipment, including skid steers, trailers, a couple semi-trailers, and a fully equipped hazmat trailer they refer to as their Accident Recovery Trailer. Though the company started out with “any old used truck we could find,” they now exclusively buy Jerr-Dan equipment from Rocky Mountain Wrecker Sales. “I would say that Jerr-Dan’s equipment has definitely contributed to the growth of our company,” Mark says. “What they put in their ads is the simple truth. Their equipment is strong, it’s tough. Like they say, it’s engineered that way. We’ve never had any problems other than regular wear and tear. And our distributor, Rocky Mountain, is a joy to work with. We’ve been with them since 2017, and those guys are friends as

much as they are business partners.” On top of everything else, Code Red has been recognized for a Best in State service award two years in a row.

NO PLANS TO SLOW DOWN

Slowing down does not appear to be in the cards. Jami is the president and events director for the state towing association and responsible for putting on the state tow show each year. Jami is also active in the TRAA and advocates for towers getting involved in local, state, and national associations to help combat the threat of so-called “predatory towing” laws, which lump all the hardworking, honest towers in with the bad apples that every industry has. Mark has a few extra irons in the fire as well, but what those irons are cannot be disclosed just yet. One thing is clear. The next generation of towers is well represented by Mark and Jami. And Code Red, just as it was in 2018, is barreling at full speed ahead.

Enhanced Safety on the Roadside:

How TowMate’s Lighting Solutions Protect Service Trucks and Workers

When it comes to lighting for service trucks, safety is paramount. The right lighting setup not only ensures that workers are visible on the roadside but also that their surroundings are well-illuminated, especially in low-light or hazardous conditions. Effective lighting is about more than just brightness; it’s about strategic visibility that enhances awareness for both workers and passing

drivers. TowMate offers innovative solutions that tackle these safety needs head-on, particularly with their SS470UVA HINVII surface mount LED strobes and the UTX24WA Power-Link 24” light bar.

The SS470UVA HINVII LED strobe exemplifies how far lighting technology has come. Built with HINVII technology, it’s designed to “light up” hi-viz materials on vests and roadside markers, amplifying their visibility and making roadside workers easier to spot from a

distance. This unique combination of ultra-violet and high-intensity Amber LEDs (or color of your choosing) interacts with safety vests and reflective surfaces in a way that standard lighting can’t replicate, offering an extra layer of security for crews working near traffic. Unlike conventional strobes, the SS470UVA increases both the visibility of roadside workers and the potential reaction time of oncoming drivers, effectively reducing risks in high-traffic or low-visibility settings.

For service trucks needing extra visibility and versatility, TowMate’s new UTX24WA Power-Link 24” light bar delivers on all fronts. Engineered specifically for service, highway, and utility vehicles, this light bar integrates white and amber LEDs (or color of your choice) with clear lenses for maximum brightness and adaptability. The 360° work light is a standout feature, illuminating front, rear, and sides simultaneously. Not only does it provide direct illumination around the truck, but it’s also configured to function as part of the strobe system, ensuring that the truck is visible from all angles even in adverse weather conditions.

One of the UTX24WA’s most practical advantages is its simplified Power-Link (PLC) technology, which requires only two wires from the controller and two wires from the light bar, eliminating the need for a bulky multi-stranded cable. This streamlined setup makes installation quick and easy. Despite the minimal wiring, the PLC-TX6 six-button control pad can manage multiple functions, including arrow, strobe, and work lights, with just these two wires.

Mounting on service trucks is also seamless with the UTX24WA. Its four rubber-coated magnets, each with a 105-pound pull, offer a secure grip on the vehicle, even in rough or off-road conditions, ensuring that the light stays in place as trucks move from one job site to another. This easy-to-mount design also

makes it a versatile choice for fleets that require lighting with minimal alteration to the vehicle it is mounted.

In considering what makes lighting effective for service trucks, both the SS470UVA and UTX24WA stand out as clear solutions. They offer visibility enhancements that go beyond standard lighting setups, prioritizing worker

safety and situational adaptability. The combination of HINVII technology for clear, enhanced worker illumination and the Power-Link light bar’s multi-directional, easily mountable design provides service trucks with a dependable, high-visibility setup that truly addresses the demands of roadside work.

Dynamic’s Service Truck A Solid Towing Industry Solution!

Dynamic Towing Equipment and Manufacturing has another solid towing solution to the industry!

Dynamic worked with motor clubs and towers across the country to design a service truck specifically tailored to satisfying the customer’s needs. We spoke directly with those who already owned our trucks and even spoke to our potential customers who are considering them. Listening to what they said, we then turned their feedback into features that empower them to work more efficiently and quickly resulting in higher revenues and lower costs of operation. Specifically, we found that an effective service truck needs plenty of storage, additional recovery capabilities, and increased safety, so here is what we did to design a service truck that delivers what our customers need:

WE CREATED PLENTY OF STRATEGIC STORAGE SPACE.

The Service Truck is equipped with four rollup-door storage compartments for safe and easy curbside access totaling an amazing 80-cubic feet of usable space. The fenders are poly, so no more rust, and they are lighter, so you can carry more cargo weight without the risk of being overweight. These huge compartments can be delivered with an optional adjustable rack system for vehicle batteries and can provide safe stowing of up to 36 batteries in large boxes able to hold enough batteries to cover most vehicles on the road. The boxes have adjustable shelves with tie-downs, so the batteries are always secured while in motion. In addition, both sides of the Service Truck have wide toolboxes and another large storage compartment on the deck for a total of seven compartments.

Accompanying deck space measuring 54” x 85” allows for plenty of space for dollies, go jacks, and additional storage options.

Also, tool-box compartments are installed to accommodate all normal roadside assistance tools and equipment as well as an air compressor with front and rear quick disconnects to allow the tech complete flexibility to service vehicles in all positions. Even with the additional storage boxes, the center deck is still open for additional storage of equipment.

WE INCREASED OUR TRUCK’S RECOVERY CAPABILITIES ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR MULTIPLE VEHICLES.

We decided to add a 5000-lb. wheel lift with a recovery boom and an 8000lb. Ramsey winch. A front push bumper is also available with an optional winch. We did this because after speaking to our customers, we found that they were wanting one vehicle to do as much as possible, so now you can do everything from a battery boost to a battery replacement to a tow or all the way up to a recovery with one vehicle. The service technician can test the disabled vehicle’s battery and electrical system to get the vehicle running under its own power. If necessary, the tech can install a new battery in the vehicle at the breakdown site. However, as in many cases, the battery is not the cause of the breakdown. After eliminating all the things a Service truck can do to assist

the stranded customer, all you must do now is hook up the car. Consequently, because of the increased capabilities of our Service truck, we don’t have to dispatch a tow vehicle to complete the service call

and tow the customer to their repair facility; our Dynamic service truck can handle the job. The customer does not have to wait for another vehicle to arrive, and you as an owner do not have to send multiple vehicles to the same breakdown location. We improve operational efficiency saving on fuel, vehicle wear and tear, and overhead while still providing the same high level of service our customers have come to expect.

WE IMPROVED SAFETY THROUGH OUR STORAGECOMPARTMENT DOOR DESIGN. Our units have roll-up doors that do not swing out into the path of traffic, but rather roll up into the truck. This eliminates the possibility of passing vehicles catching an open storage compartment door and creating a traffic incident with the service truck endangering the life of the tower or customer.

CUSTER PRODUCTS

Lighting the Way

Custer Products have been lighting the way for Equipment, Service and Utility Trucks since 1993.

Over 30 years we have been in the truck lighting business. The technology improvements have come a long way including changes made to the brightness, quality and durability of these lighting products.

The switch from incandescent to LED has been the most significant change for this industry. Not only do the LED lights last longer and are brighter, but they draw less amperage from the truck, which in most cases continues to run, or at least has continuous lights running while on the job.

The “Service Truck” can be designed for a multitude of industries. Crane trucks, mobile workshops, bucket trucks and fuel or water trucks are just naming a few and there are different kinds of lighting products appropriate for each one.

Some crane lighting examples would be the WL93FR-V2, (LED 27-watt work light) the STR63AWF, (LED strobe and work light combo) and you could include a LITH36STR (external battery wireless light bar with strobes) for towing service. These bright LED lights make it a safer environment because of visibility and compliance. See all our LED work lights here: https://custerproducts.com/productcategory/single-lights/work-lights/ Another type of service truck that

reminds me most of my childhood is the Bucket Truck, or Aerial Truck as we called it, from the Fire Department where my dad was Assistant Chief. This truck was impressive as it could lift the rescue bucket high into the air, extending the boom and reached the tallest building in the town. When you watched the water flow from way up there, you knew the men would have the fire under control in no time. Safety and Scene lighting is key in this field. Our LED work Light bars come in a range of sizes. The WL36WBARCB (7” 36-watts LED light bar) is the smallest bar we offer and the WL240WBARC (240-watts, which is 41.5” long) is the largest with several

sizes in between, all with combo flood and spot pattern lenses.

The blue move over lighting can be turned on or off by the special button on the controller. Top 5 Heavy-Duty Towing Myths Debunked

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING SCENARIO: a fully loaded semi-trailer truck experiences a tire blowout on a busy highway. The driver, believing any towing service can manage the situation, flags down a passing light-duty tow truck.

This, however, is a critical misunderstanding of the specialized nature of 24-hour heavy-duty towing, one that could potentially lead to further damage, delays, and even safety hazards. Heavy-duty towing necessitates specific equipment and a level of expertise that extends far beyond the capabilities of standard towing vehicles.

Today, we’re not just debunking myths; we’re equipping you with the

knowledge to navigate the world of heavy-duty towing with confidence. Get ready to learn the truth about towing needs, separate fact from fiction, and understand the nuances associated with heavy-duty towing.

Myth 1: Any Tow Truck Can Handle Heavy-Duty Towing

Many people assume that any tow truck with a hook can handle any towing

job. Not so fast!

When it comes to heavy-duty towing, not all tow trucks are created equal. A common misconception is that any tow truck can handle any vehicle, but the reality is much different. Tow trucks come in different types, each designed to handle specific jobs.

Light-duty tow trucks are great for cars and small vehicles, while mediumduty ones are used for larger vehicles like SUVs and vans. But when it comes to heavy-duty towing, only specialized trucks—equipped with advanced tools such as under-reach and wheel-lift systems, heavy-duty winches, and the proper training for operators—can safely manage large vehicles like semi-trucks,

buses, and construction equipment.

Think of it this way: you wouldn’t use a compact car to tow a trailer full of heavy equipment. The same principle

applies to towing. Heavy-duty towing requires specialized tools, and attempting to tow heavy loads with the wrong type of vehicle or equipment can result in

significant damage. Professional towing services use the right tools and expertise to ensure that the job gets done safely and efficiently.

The consequences of believing this myth include potential damage to your vehicle, safety hazards, and higher repair costs. Using the wrong equipment can damage your vehicle and lead to dangerous roadside emergencies. Trust reputable towing companies equipped with the proper tools and experience to handle heavy-duty towing and avoid these costly mistakes.

Myth 2: Towing Is Only for Accidents

Many believe towing is only necessary after an accident. Think again!

One of the most prevalent myths about towing is that it’s only needed after a collision. In reality, towing services go far beyond accidents. Professional towing companies offer a wide range of services to assist in various situations,

from vehicle breakdowns to moving heavy machinery. Whether it’s a blown tire on a semi-truck, a roadside emergency, or transporting construction equipment, towing services are essential

in many scenarios.

Imagine this: You’re a fleet manager with a truck stranded due to engine failure, miles away from a service station. Or perhaps you’re working on

a construction site and need to move an excavator to a different location. In both cases, reliable towing services are the go-to solution for transporting large vehicles or heavy equipment safely and efficiently.

Understanding that towing isn’t just for accidents encourages proactive maintenance and planning for potential roadside emergencies. Having a trusted professional towing service on standby gives you peace of mind in knowing that, whether you’re dealing with a breakdown or need to transport heavy loads, there’s always a solution. So next time you think towing is just for accidents, remember how versatile these services really are!

Myth 3: Heavy-Duty Towing Always Damages Your Vehicle

Some people fear that heavy-duty towing will inevitably damage their vehicle.

One of the most common misconceptions about towing is that

using a tow truck, especially for larger vehicles, means risking damage. It’s essential to debunk this myth and explain that professional towing companies are equipped with specialized tools and training to ensure that your vehicle is handled with care.

For example, heavy-duty towing requires specialized equipment, such as flatbed tow trucks and hitches designed specifically for larger vehicles. Towing professionals use techniques like proper attachment points and clearance checks to ensure a smooth and damage-free process. These operators undergo extensive training to understand the different towing methods and how to properly secure and transport vehicles of all sizes, from semi-trucks to buses.

The key to avoiding vehicle damage? Choosing a reputable towing company with a solid track record of handling heavy-duty towing safely. Towing companies strive to maintain high standards, ensuring that your vehicle is in good hands.

Before you need a tow, ask about their level of service, inquire about tow ratings, and ensure they have modern trucks equipped with the latest technology. With the right precautions, towing your vehicle doesn’t have to be a damaging experience.

Myth 4: Towing Is Always Expensive

“Heavy-duty towing? Get ready to break the bank!”

This is a common misconception that often deters people from seeking professional towing services when they need them most. While it’s true that towing involves costs, towing is not always expensive—and several factors can influence the final price.

The distance of the tow, the type of vehicle, and the complexity of the towing process all play a role in determining the cost. For example, a short-distance tow for a small vehicle will cost significantly less than hauling a large truck over a long distance. Additionally, choosing a reputable company that uses modern equipment can help ensure efficient service and fair pricing.

When considering the cost, remember that improper or DIY towing can lead to even more expenses—like further

vehicle damage, lost time, or even safety hazards. Paying for reliable towing is often a smart investment that can prevent costly issues later on.

Myth 5: Only Mechanics Can Handle Heavy-Duty Towing

“You need to be a mechanic to understand heavy-duty towing, right?”

This is another common myth that can leave individuals and businesses feeling overwhelmed when they encounter a roadside emergency. While having some mechanical knowledge is certainly helpful, it’s not essential for utilizing heavy-duty towing services.

What truly matters is finding a reputable towing company. These companies employ towing professionals who are trained to assess a situation quickly and accurately and ensure they provide the right equipment for the job.

Whether you’re dealing with a large truck, construction equipment, or any other type of service, these experts have the experience and tools to get you out of a bind safely and efficiently.

As a vehicle owner, your role is to focus on providing accurate information about your vehicle’s condition—like its make, model, and any issues it may be experiencing. This will help the towing professionals understand the situation better. From there, you can sit back and relax, knowing that the towing company has everything under control.

Remember, myths and misconceptions abound when it comes to heavy-duty

towing. Still, the truth is you don’t have to be a mechanic to handle a towing situation effectively!

MYTH 5

EV Rescue Smartphone Application

Chevrolet announced in May that production of the Malibu, its last sedan, will cease production this November. Like so many American families, mine had one in the 1980’s. After a 60 year career, the bowtie perennial will retire.

The factory will be retooled for the production of Chevy’s Bolt. For tow professionals, they have undoubtedly noticed the increase in electric vehicles. A smartphone application tow truck operators should consider is the EV Rescue app. (https:// autorescueapp.com/) Available for

Apple, Google and Microsoft devices, this free application provides readily needed information. The application presents information in a clear, intuitive, easy to navigate, format with the main screen displaying passenger vehicles and delivery trucks. A simple dropdown menu allows for the selection of make, model and

year. Clear schematics highlight the location of vital components for each vehicle. The application also includes information on vehicle charging stations.
