After five years based in Arch 6, in May the Ouseburn Trust is moving over the road to 53 and 55 Lime Street, just opposite Seven Stories. 53 will be the office base for the Trust while 55 will be the welcome point for Victoria Tunnel Tours, and will be ideal for school and group visits as well as heritage displays.

Chief Officer, Chris Barnard, says “It’s an opportunity to extend what we offer to the increasing number of visitors to the Victoria Tunnel and to have a higher profile on the street. We have loved working in Arch 6, and sharing it with some inspiring organisations over the last five years.

It’s all about encouraging people to do something cultural with their evening in celebration of the international event Museums at Night.

Next stop Victoria Tunnel!

Ripples of alarm and horror were followed by hoots of laughter as fans and friends of the Victoria Tunnel came across this article in The Journal on 1 April.

Surely they couldn’t build a mini Metro to fit in the Tunnel?

In case you missed the fun we reproduce it here, but don’t be fooled, check the date!

Meanwhile, in March we took a record number of visitors on heritage tours of the Tunnel, helped by a very welcome influx of new volunteer guides who are now in training alongside our experienced team of guides.

We are looking forward to improved facilities for welcoming visitors and running classroom sessions in 55 Lime Street from May onwards. We will also be able to offer a wider range of Victoria Tunnel and local merchandise in addition to the Guidebook and DVD currently available.

1940s Weekend 3-4 September Inspired by the interests and enthusiasm of our volunteer guides and working with our friends the Time Bandits we are making plans for a 1940s weekend in Ouseburn Valley over the weekend of 3-4 September. We’ve had a great response from organisations

Tuesday 26 July Enjoying Ouseburn’s Trees and Hedges. The Ouseburn Valley’s trees and hedges have a story to tell. This walk takes a wander through the wooded areas and will talk about the planting and the management of the trees, a short history of hedges, and how one can be transformed into the other.

Tuesday 2 August The Route of the Quayside Railway. From 1870 to 1969 an amazing railway carried goods on the steep incline between the Quayside and Manors Goods Yard. Walk the route with Jeff Taylor looking out for signs and hearing the stories. Meet at Manors Metro Station, ends Quayside Tuesday 9 August Cultural delights by bike. Join a guided cycle tour visiting the cultural delights of Ouseburn, particularly its wall and public art. Meet at The Cycle Hub on the Quayside (hire bikes available – please arrange when booking).

First and Third Saturdays Enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the lovely 18th century Saint Ann’s Church, open from 10.30–3.30 on the first and third Saturdays of the month starting on Saturday 16th April through to Saturday 17th September this year.

Tuesday 31 May – Heroism on the Home Front.

A special memorial service to remember the heroism of Firemen and Boy Scouts during the Second World War. This is marking the 75th anniversary of the Tarset Street Tragedy. All welcome at1pm at St Ann’s Church, Battlefield Saturday 4 June and first Saturdays– The first of a regular Ouseburn Market on the first Saturday of month – based at Ouseburn Farm, The Cumberland Arms, The Ship Inn and The Cluny.

And on the first Saturday of every month Mushroom Works open their gallery doors to showcase a vibrant selection of Super Handmade Original Products all made with love by the studio

Tim Bailey Partner/Architect talks about xsite architecture’s working life in, and affection for, the Valley. xsite architecture moved down into the Ouseburn in 2006. Although that was a long time after many of the early seeds of regeneration and change had taken root, the valley still felt a little bit like it was relatively unknown, a little bit edgy and full of potential and really interesting people. In a nutshell that explains its attraction for us as a base, moving out of Tyneside Cinema as it readied itself for refurbishment and ready for our next stage of development as an architecture practice striving to produce good work in amazing North East settings.

In the ten years since then we have watched, listened and taken part in a whole series of projects and events that have achieved some of that potential, continuing the vital and active nature of the valley but its also been great fun.

I guess the question might be what is in store next for this magical place? A place where the people in Berlin on the other end of the phone can hear the goats bleating or birds singing, where the big sky arcs over like a James Tyrell Skyspace, where tall elegant bridges allow the city to rush by overhead allowing time to register differently.

Well there has always been something engaging about the relatively slow pace of change and development in the valley.

Its smaller sites, sometimes difficult terraine, intricate but fascinating context and rich historic references promotes good discussion, careful thought and good decisions around development.

Sounds a little like the ideal recipe for sustainability to me.

We have loved being behind the conversion of the ruined Maynard’s confectionery factory into the Toffee Factory, the arrival of bedrooms at the Cumberland Arms (and its latest venture too) and currently involved at Lower Steenberg’s Yard and one or two other sites around the valley. As well as focussing on buildings during the time here we have always sought to be good neighbours, getting involved where our advice or time has been welcome. That has included Stepney Bank Stables, the Farm, Ouseburn Trust, the DIY Streets project, Cycle Hub, Ouse Street Arts Club and its successor The Cookhouse run by our former colleague Anna Hedworth. We’ve also designed a Christmas window for Seven Stories in 2007 and donated the henhouse at the Farm after it was finished as an Enchanted Parks Spooky House installation in 2010. This is just a sample of the things we’ve been enthralled by while in the valley with plenty more to come. It might sound like we are off! PROTOHOME is a self-build housing project created by members of Crisis, the national charity for single homeless people. It will be temporarily sited and open to the public at Upper Steenbergs, in the Stepney Bank Stables car park in the Ouseburn, Newcastle upon Tyne. It opens at The Late Shows on 13th May and is open until August 2016.

Working alongside xsite architecture and TILT Gallery Installation and Joinery Services, a group of individuals who have experienced homelessness are developing a timber-frame self-build housing prototype using a method of building specifically designed for untrained self-builders. However, the aim isn’t to create a full housing model with services, but a ‘shell’ structure that offers a vision of how this model could be developed into ‘working’ housing in the future. After the build is completed, the ‘house’ created will become a hub for a programme of events, discussions, artist residencies, filmscreenings, workshops, performances and exhibitions examining the collaborative design-build process and wider issues to do with housing and homelessness in an austerity context and participatory alternatives. The project forms part of a wider research project about self-build at Durham University..

LEARNING THROUGH BUILDING

The design is based on a type of building called the Segal method, which offers flexibility of use and ease of construction. The frame is on a dimensional grid, making plans easy to follow, and all construction is done using dry jointing techniques with bolts and screws, so there are no wet trades involved that might require more enhanced training. It’s built around a core structure so walls and partitions are not load bearing and also means that walls can easily be unscrewed and moved around to change room formations, and ‘in wall’ services such as electrics can be easily accessed and repairs and alterations simply made. The method uses standard ‘off the shelf’ material sizes so less cutting and waste is involved, making the process more economical and saves the time and energy of the self-builder.

WHY NOW?

The starting point for the project is the current social housing crisis, and the effect that austerity measures are having on already precarious lives. Homelessness is growing and housing for low income groups is becoming more perilous and temporary with an over-crowded and unstable private rental sector, people living on the move, sofa-surfing, or being forced to move out of the inner city. As a result people are seeking self-help solutions and more ‘marginal’ ways of living and ‘home-making’.

his project questions how we might connect self-build T with problems of rising homelessness, inequality, territorial stigmatisation, generational unemployment and so called ‘failing’ housing markets (empty homes) by looking at selfbuild as an educational tool, to widen access to housing for low income or homeless groups and to aid in education and employment opportunities through learning, building and participating.

A busy time for planners and architects Planning issues are, as always, of keen interest and debate in the Valley, and there’s been quite a few planning applications in the last few months, and more in the pipeline. Ouseburn Futures’ Planning & Development Group has had presentations from several developers and made comments on plans as well as early stage ideas, which has led to some changes. Here’s a list of the key sites we have discussed: Planning permission granted: • Lower Steenbergs (Carillion Igloo): 34 homes and workspaces (granted but currently delayed due to high costs of building) • Rosedale Court, Portland Road (Abodus): change of use from retail to medical centre (granted) Planning applications made: • Former Star and shadow site on Crawhall Rd/ Stepney Bank (Calmont): construction of 138 private rented flats – mainly 5 storeys – many think too big • Blocked street and plaza at Bermondsey Street/ Boyd Street (Biscuit Factory): Creation of plaza on closed-off Bermondsey Street and yard behind former SWS House to be used for parking and as a “cultural plaza” on up to 36 days a year.

Controversial plan - could brighten up a corner of the area, but concern over whether it would affect parking for local businesses and their customers • 28 Lime Street (Lowes Hall): lower two floors change of use from storage space to dance / artist studios and offices • Cumberland Arms: 3 storey extension for restaurant, brewery, and staff flat No application as yet: • Canvas Works building at 47-49 Lime Street (RASKL): workspaces for creative and other businesses in a building made from containers, making good use of a difficult site • 7-17 Lime Street (Adamsons): plans for 54 1 & 2 bed flats, and retail units on ground floor We’re also reviewing the key documents which provide guidelines for developers and architects – the Conservation Area Management Plan, Ouseburn

Talking Rubbish Residents, workers, volunteers and businesses got together at the Ouseburn Trust/Ouseburn Futures joint meeting to talk about the litter in the Valley and what we can do.. There are several sources of litter - food and drink packaging, fly tipping and drug debris each needing its own solution.

It was interesting to hear the City Council’s approach, which is not about providing more bins, but about changing behaviour. They can help with enforcement and supporting local action on litter.

It was encouraging to hear about businesses and individuals adopting small areas and pathways to keep them tidy and their passion for resisting rubbish!

Clean Green Ouseburn A huge thank you to Ouseburn Futures volunteers, including local residents from The Malings and St Ann’s, who have continued to be busy maintaining the green spaces in Ouseburn Valley, with help from Northumbria University students, and staff from the Department of Works and Pensions and from RIBA [Royal Institute of British Architects] Enterprises.

As our volunteers know well, ‘litter picking’ can mean heaving much bigger rubbish than ‘litter’ and this is more of a challenge to collect. We are therefore very grateful to BEL Valves Ltd for sponsoring four skips to help us improve public spaces in the area.

If you would like to help us doing litter picking, pruning, planting and sowing, we have regular Saturday morning sessions from 10am to around 12.30pm. We also have day sessions on 19 April, 10 May and 24 May (all Tuesdays) from 10am to 3pm.You are welcome to join us for just an hour or two if you can’t do a whole session. We usually meet by Ouseburn Farm at 10 am, and provide tools and equipment to use, and guidance on what to do.

The work of Ouseburn Futures volunteers on litter picks and ‘deep cleans’ is greatly appreciated and making a visible difference.

What’s on in the Valley Ouseburn Farm

Ouseburn Farm is looking forward to the Summer holidays and welcoming visitors to the farm. Andrea Haynes, Farm Manager, says “We have some exciting plans for the Summer as we introduce our new ‘farm experience’ package for families to purchase. Of course our farm entry will always be free for visitors to come in and take a look around but we can now introduce a full family day where visitors can take part in being a farmer and gardener with special designed workshops that will entertain throughout the day.

Visitors will be able to spend time working with our animals, learning how to grow produce, making bread, building dens and much more, all set at a reasonable price. All proceeds made from these workshops keep our farm working to help the community and also help with our education facility for adults with disabilities and learning difficulties.”

The farm also continues to run birthday parties with special themes, educational programs and they now have their very own Anaerobic Digester which helps create energy to heat the polytunnel in the winter. This fascinating machine also gives visitors an interesting insight in how waste products can be utilized.

The Biscuit Factory

Lots of exciting goings-on are taking place at The Biscuit Factory - the UK’s largest art, craft and design gallery - over the next few months.

On 22 April, they launch the Open Contemporary Portrait Award exhibition which gives visitors the chance to view the shortlisted artwork for the inaugural portraiture prize and vote for their ‘people’s choice winner’.

And, getting the summer programme under way, on 3 June they’ll be unveiling our new seasonal exhibition, headlined by landscape artist Chris Forsey. Look out for further information about the summer show by visiting www.thebiscuitfactory.com

From July-September a new exhibition will show work by abstract printmaker Jo Gorner drawing from her experiences in the natural environment to create subtle and exquisite compositions.

Welcome to Steve Chettle who is working as Events and Outreach Manager while Amy Warmington is on maternity leave with new baby Finn. Steve updates us with their news: “Our next exhibition: A Force of Nature, is open from 13–20 April. This exhibition of artworks produced during and after outdoor exploration of Northumberland’s wild spaces by members of the Walker Challenge - an Adult Mental Health Recovery group taking part in the John Muir Award. Using their own creativity, and working alongside artist Danny Gilchrist, the group created artworks based on colours, textures and thoughts while out and about in these local but wild places. The main focus was not to replicate or copy the landscape but to record and register how it made the group feel and how it could help people.

“After this we have our exhibition (En)countering the City 13 May to 2 June. This is a partnership with a team of curators from Northumbria University and the exhibition explores maps, power and identity.”

Seven Stories

During May half term (28 May-5 June) dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes are invited to stomp down to the Ouseburn to explore the themes of Michael Foreman’s classic book Dinosaurs and All that Rubbish. Add your junk scales to a GIANT T-Rex and build your own origami dinosaur. On the Thursday and Friday visitors can also Go Wild with Zoolab - the UK’s number one animal handling experience company.

Slither, crawl, slide and hop into Seven Stories for a chance to meet Ranger Rob and some of his exotic colleagues including a tarantula and Bosc monitor lizard.

Northern Print

Congratulations to Northern Print who will mark their 21st Birthday Celebration with an exhibition of prints by popular and esteemed returning Japanese artists Fusako Yoshikawa, Katsunori Hamanishi and Eriko Maki. Davey Pearson Photographic Archive

by Allen Mulliss, Photo Archive Volunteer The Davey Pearson archive consists of photographic prints, negatives and slides of the North East and beyond covering the period from the 1970s until early 2000s.

Work by our team of volunteers continues digitising and cataloguing the collection of 60,000 images. More images are also being uploaded to flickr.com/photos/ouseburntrust to share them online with a wider audience. Full training is given if you would like to come and help research and catalogue the images.

This edition features a personal choice of images from the 1980s and early 1990s. Hope you like them!

The Tyne and Wear Metro bridge spans the junction by those roads and Shields Road West. Construction work is in progress of the bypass for Shields Road, Byker built in the late 1980s.

On the right is the rear corner of the (former) CoOperative Wholesale Society grain & cotton storage warehouse (now Malmaison hotel), Sandgate/St Mary’s Street, Quayside. The road is Anchor Chare between Sandgate and Quayside. In the background is a motorbike being ridden by parked cars and people sitting on the edge of London Wharf.

Parking in the Arches Car Park Having had the parking meter stolen twice in a year, the Arches Car Park is now introducing a pay by mobile phone system.

If you ever use the car park it is worth setting up your account before you arrive - it takes a minute on a PC or tablet, then ringing up to pay takes a few seconds. Even better, download the app to your phone.

More details at www.ouseburntrust.org.uk/parking Many visitors already use pay by phone parking in other places and recommend it you don’t need to have cash, it will text you when your time runs out, and you can top up the time without returning to the car.

But if you don’t want to or can’t pay by phone it will still be possible to call in to the Ouseburn Trust’s office and pay in person during office hours.
