ootball is a great sport! It’s fun to watch and takes talent to play. Vince Lombardi said it best, “Football is like life. It requires perseverance, self-denial, hard-work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.” It’s no wonder these five, talented young men were chosen to represent their school on Our Town’s 8th Annual Football cover. Every year it is a blessing to meet some of the kindest, most respectful, and immensely talented young people in Paulding. These guys are no exception.

Cameron Foster - #58 East Paulding High School Cameron is the son of Phalisa and Greg Foster. He has played football 11 years and is a Defensive End for the Raiders. This season he is looking forward to working with East’s “great” coaching staff and being a leader for his younger teammates both on and off the field. Cameron is a member of FCA and DECA, and an active member of Crown of Life Community Baptist. After graduation he plans on playing football and studying sports medicine. He has interest from several universities including Kennesaw State, Shorter, Reinhardt, and Eastern Kentucky to name a few.

community spotlight By Diane Sohl, Kids Hope USA Director

W

e are excited about starting our fourth year of mentoring students at Robert’s Elementary School in Dallas. By building relationships, we see life change in the students we work with, and our own lives as well.

As this school year begins we are looking for people who are interested in working with elementary school students for one hour, once a week through the school year, beginning in October and ending in May. One simple thing will make a big difference in the life of an at-risk child: One-on-one, positive attention from a responsible, caring adult. Kids Hope USA develops these one-on-one relationships through the creation of church-school partnerships that pair church members with at-risk kids in supportive, mentoring relationships. Kids Hope USA mentors spend just one hour per week, reading, talking, playing and listening to a child at school. By helping the child feel loved and valued, they help that child to learn, grow and succeed. Each mentor will also be paired with a prayer partner, who would be praying for the mentor and their student each week, from home, as the mentor gives you updates concerning the needs of the student. According to KidsHopeUSA.org, this is how Kids Hope USA works: Kids Hope USA is the catalyst for an expanding network of church/school partnerships. These partnerships take on the enormous challenge of kids at risk—One Child, One Hour, One Church, One School at a time—through one-on-one mentoring relationships. ONE CHILD There is a desperate need among at-risk children to be the “one-and-only” in the life of a caring adult. This need for love can only be met one child at a time. You can do something real, and be that one caring adult. So when your Kids Hope USA child asks, “How many other children do you see at my school?” you can say, “I’m here, just for you.” When kids feel loved and valued, they are better able to learn, grow and succeed. ONE HOUR Sixty critical minutes each week when a trained mentor befriends a child and helps him or her acquire basic academic skills. How much is an hour worth? One educator seems to think an hour is worth a lot. “Given the choice between $100,000 for instructional material or the love of Kids Hope USA mentors,” she says, “I would choose the love.” One hour a week, every week, is the most important hour many of these kids have. One hour of one-on-one attention, just for them. ONE CHURCH Takes ownership of a program with its neighborhood school and provides a trained mentor and a behind-the-scenes prayer partner for each child. Many church members today have a deep longing to do something real, to make a real difference. Kids Hope USA gives churches the tools they need to tap into this energy and create a meaningful, sustainable partnership with a school in their community. Kids Hope USA church/school partnerships offer churches and their members the opportunity to put their faith into action. ONE SCHOOL Welcomes this proven intervention to increase the academic skills of at-risk children, while incurring no additional expense. Our schools need help. Too many of their children face a world full of problems they didn’t create, and can do nothing about. Principals and teachers recognize Kids Hope USA mentors as an effective, proven intervention in the lives of their at-risk kids. They know how the one-onone relationships fostered by a Kids Hope USA program restore self-confidence and personal security, and encourage academic excellence in their school.

family focus The College Journey and the Law: Tips for Students & Parents

By Mike Miller, Miller & Wynn Law Firm

M

any young adults are beginning a new chapter in their lives, as they depart home and head out on their college journey. It is certainly an exciting time, but it is also the first time many of them have left home alone for an extended period of time. This can be fraught with nervousness for both the parent and the child. While on their own, some students may find themselves, either due to poor choices or by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, encountering law officials, as well as the judicial system. Many people may not know how best to deal with this situation when it occurs. This is why it is important for everyone to understand the law, in order to handle such situations in a safe manner. Below are five tips that our law firm would like to share with students and parents in preparation for the college sendoff. Momentary Decisions Have Future Consequences – If you think your actions could get you arrested, then that should be a clear indication to not do it. College students may not always realize that their actions are illegal or realize that all actions have consequences. However, an arrest can impact the rest of your life, including your career, your current and future family, and more. Rights – Know and Exercise Your Rights - If you or a friend is arrested, know that you have the right to remain silent until you consult with an attorney. And, in most cases, this is sound advice.

3698 Largent Way

l

If You’re Charged with a Crime or Given a Citation – When charged with a crime or given a citation, a college student must take it seriously. It is imperative that you follow up and find out if and when you have to go to court. The best decision in many cases is for you to contact a lawyer, to make sure you and your interests are best represented. Pay any fines associated with the crime or citation. Bring cash to pay the fine, because most courthouses do not take checks or credit/ debit cards.

Suite 201 l Marietta

Conveniently located across from The Avenue West Cobb

We provide an environment where kids can have a fun and happy dental experience while receiving the very best dental care available. Come tour our state of the art office with with themed rooms representing each continent from around the world.

A Crime Committed Against You - If a crime is committed against you by an individual or a group of people, no matter how big or small, report it to the local authorities. By filing a report, you have an official written record of the account, which will be necessary should you go to court. Additional Tips: Be aware of your surroundings. If you are ever weary of your environment, leave and go somewhere safe. Never take unnecessary risks. If you are of legal age and go out drinking, consider taking an Uber of a taxi. Remember that you are in charge of your own safety – and study hard!

Building Perseverance

By Stephanie Reck, LMSW, LBT,BCCC

D

efinition of perseverance: Steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.

Runners have to dig deep to find the motivation to continue despite pain and weather challenges. There are boundless opportunities that a runner can use to quit. The option of quitting must be banished from the runner’s mind, as well as the mind of a Christian.

Synonyms for perseverance: Persistence, tenacity, determination, staying power, and steadfastness. My alarm clock sounded off loudly at the usually 6 am, but on this Monday morning I did not want to get up for my usual morning run. The weather was already hot and humid, and I was just plain tired. I just wanted to crawl back into bed, but I remembered the commitment that I made over a year ago that I would become a runner. Becoming a runner was no small task for me, being that I never ran long distance before, but I became disciplined and achieved the ability to run several miles without feeling like I was going to pass out. Here I am over a year later and the once amazing results that I saw my physique transform into has lessened. In other words, I am seeing little progress in my physical body changing, it seems my weight has stayed the same over the summer. So I woke-up on this hot Monday morning thinking to myself, “what’s the point in running I’m not seeing results anymore.” I heard not audible but in that still small voice of God, “I am building perseverance within you, and you are learning not to quit when it gets tough or there is little results.” The Lord has used my running to teach me many things that I can apply to my walk with Him.

Last week, I got up at my usual 6 am time to go out for my run, but was meet with a torrential downpour. I had already made up my mind I was going to run to matter what, so that is what I did through the rain. I persevered through the rain! When life gets tough we must make a resolve never to quit or give-up our faith or on Jesus.

Persistence and steadfastness mark our Christian walk. If we are to discipline our minds and bodies, perseverance is key. Why? Because I can almost guarantee you will want to quit or give-up somewhere along your life’s journey. This is especially true in our relationship with Jesus, we may want to give up on God when He does not seem to answer our prayers in a timely manner or the way we think they should be answered. It is not just God we can give up on but our marriages, jobs, ministry, or our health.

Resilience, is the ability to recover and continue in life no matter the problem or obstacle. Perseverance, is the ability to persist in life’s pursuits in spite of difficult obstacles. Resilience and perseverance are character traits that can be learned! We can not only endure trials (preserve) but come out stronger in the end! (Romans 5:3-4). Learn to persevere-continue on despite challenges. The more you remain steadfast through problems, your perseverance will build.

As Christians it is important to develop the characteristic of perseverance; we will need this trait when times get tough and we see little or no progress in our lives. When trials come our character and spiritual strength will be tested. We must be rooted and grounded in Christ to overcome life’s challenges.

What Can Investors Learn from

Roller Coaster Rides?

Contributed by Roberto De Jesus of Edward Jones Investments, Dallas/Acworth

I

f you have an interest in looking up obscure holidays and celebrations, you will find that August 16th is National Roller Coaster Day. As you know, a roller coaster is used as a metaphor for many areas of life – including the financial markets. As an investor, what can you learn from this thrill ride? Here are a few suggestions: • Don’t jump off. This is pretty standard advice for all roller coaster riders – but it’s also a good recommendation for investors. Specifically, you don’t want to exit the financial markets when they turn volatile. It can be tempting to do so, because the markets do indeed experience dizzying drops from time to time. But if you jump out of the markets when they’re down, you may be on the outside when they start their climb, potentially missing out on gains. • Protect yourself. When you’re on a roller coaster, you are typically advised to keep your arms and legs inside the car to protect your extremities from dangerous contact with the track and other cars. As an investor, you also need to protect yourself from dangers such as a market downturn. If you owned just one type of asset, such as aggressive growth stocks, and a downturn occurred, you’d likely take a big hit. One of the best ways to help avoid this possibility is to diversify your holdings among stocks, bonds and other investments. Although diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against losses, it can help reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio. • Keep looking forward. When you’re on a roller coaster, you don’t want to look backward. Not only could you strain your neck, but you’ll also be unprepared for the ups, downs, twists and turns that await you. When you invest, you want to keep looking forward as well. By keeping your eyes, and your focus, on your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you can be better prepared to follow a consistent strategy designed to help get you to your destination. • Don’t bring extra baggage. For obvious reasons, it’s not a good idea to bring any loose or extra baggage inside a roller coaster car that may have you going upside down at 90 or so miles per hour. As an investor, you don’t want to be saddled with any extra “baggage,” either – and one of the biggest sources of this baggage is unrealistic expectations. If you think you will earn double-digit returns every year, you will likely be disappointed – and your disappointment could lead you to make unwise decisions, such as constantly buying and selling investments to improve your performance. This type of activity is expensive, time-consuming and usually futile. So, when you invest, maintain realistic expectations – it can help you stay on track toward your goals. By following these basic guidelines for roller coasters, you’ll enjoy a safer ride. And by observing similar rules for investing, you can help make your investment “journey” smoother – and less scary. gardening By Jo Irish

Fall is the Time to Clean up Your Act

F

all is upon us! Along about the middle of August, some people’s thoughts turn to football, while gardeners begin to think about cleaning up the garden. Fall will bring cool mornings, making it nice to head outdoors to accomplish one of the most important tasks of gardening: Putting your garden to bed. Cut your flowering perennials to ground level unless you like to keep the seed heads for the birds. Some form excellent snacks for chickadees and goldfinch. Since we have birdfeeders in our yard, we usually cut the stalks down and cover the beds with dried leaves or mulch for winter protection. Speaking of birds, don’t neglect your birdhouses. Repair any that might need it and clean them now and again in the spring. Birds like clean, empty houses – free of any bees, wasps or other critters – to begin their broods. If you don’t have birdhouses, get some. Blue birds build as early as February and bring a measure of joy that is indescribable. If you are like me, you enjoy the deck or porch jumbled up with all sorts of clay or ceramic pots chock full of annuals and house plants during the spring and summer. Fall is the time to empty them of spent flowers before the cold weather. Thoroughly wash out the pots and store them in the shed, basement or somewhere out of the winter cold. It’s not a pretty sight to look out some beautiful, snowy morning to see those expensive pots cracking, chipping and falling apart right before your very eyes. The same goes for your nice tools. Who likes to discover sometime around December that brand new rake you bought at the beginning of spring propped up against the fence just turning to rust? Store your tools safely away in the barn or shed after you have washed and oiled them. They will last practically forever. And, don’t just throw them in the shed; hang them up on nails or hooks. You’ll be glad you did when you go out there to look for the Christmas lights. Drain your hoses of every bit of water, coil them up and get them stored properly. Expect a leaky surprise if you don’t! Oh, and don’t forget to store away those wire tomato cages. In a high winter wind, they can roll around your yard like a bunch of runaway tumbleweed. When you rake or blow your leaves from the lawn, do not bag them and leave them beside the road for the garbage truck! Not unless you want ME to come get them first. Leaves are God’s fall gift to you. They are natural mulch for your flower beds or vegetable plot. You can run the lawnmower over them once or twice to chop them up a bit or use them as they are. Just use them! Leaves eventually create rich loamy dirt and are a wonderful home for earthworms which every garden needs. Use the cooler days of fall to your advantage and accomplish your cleanup tasks. The following spring you will be so thankful! TrueVision Supports Paulding Football!

Are You Hurt or Are You Injured?

Helmet Spex can be purchased at TrueVision.

By Richard Maguire, M.D.

A

s we begin the fall sports again unfortunately also begins the injuries. Every year an estimated 2 million injuries occur yearly to high school athletes with 500,000 requiring doctors’ visits. Football is responsible for the greatest number of injuries followed closely by basketball, soccer and baseball. So can someone prevent injuries from occurring during sports participation? The most important thing anyone can do is staying in shape in the offseason. Most injuries that occur early in the season are due to being out of shape. For example, one study showed that ACL injuries in women’s basketball were significantly decreased by making sure the players were working on an offseason program. Another thing that you can do is warm up and cool down properly. Lastly, to prevent injuries you should always wear the appropriate gear such as pads, helmets or cups.

Helmet Spex are designed to be the best fitting frame for youth sports protective eyewear that require a helmet for those that prefer a goggle fit. Key new features include soft rubber end pieces that mold to the face that offer additional cushioning, a new adjustable goggle strap that contours over the ears, and venting in the eye-rim for increase airflow. Our new Helmet Spex includes a skull cap to wear with helmets that must be worn over the goggle and under the helmet to keep the goggle in place. FogBlok coating is recommended to be applied to every Rx to optimize your performance.

So unfortunately you are feeling pain after practice or a game. “Are you hurt or are you injured?” What is the difference? An ‘injury’ involves damage to one of the bones, muscles, tendons or ligaments, whereas a ‘hurt’ is an ache and pain that can come from pushing yourself hard or working out. How do you know which is which? The first thing to look out for is how the pain came about. Was there an episode where you felt sudden pain or did the pain come about slowly? Did you feel a pull or a pop? Generally injuries occur quickly. The athlete will suddenly feel something during the course of the sport while they get hit or are changing direction. Next thing to look at is how does it look? Is there swelling or bruising? How quickly did the swelling or bruising come about? Injuries often will be accompanied by swelling that comes about quickly after the episode. The swelling will often have bruising as well.

More Appointment Availability New Dry Eye Clinic Technologically-Advanced Optomap Retinal Imaging

How do I know if I should go to the doctor or not? First of all don’t forget about the trainer at your school. They can be an invaluable resource about treatment and management of injuries. If no trainer is available then think about the injury. Was there a moment when I suddenly felt the pain? How did it respond afterwards? Injuries will generally continue to hurt despite rest, ice and medicines. If you are just hurt things will slowly improve with those measures. If you are in doubt you should have it evaluated by your doctor. If you are injured the good news is that most injuries never require surgery. The vast majority of injuries respond very well to time off from sport combined with physical therapy and medications. The most important thing is not to try and play through the injury as that can make the injury even more severe perhaps taking you out even longer. health & fitness 3 Simple Ways Men Can Improve Their Health

M

en don’t have the best track record when it comes to taking care of themselves. It’s safe to say we all know someone who is just plain stubborn about going to the doctor. Even if they exhibit clear symptoms that should be checked out, say wheezing, chronic fatigue or worse, it can be a challenge to get them to seek medical help. Of course, not all men are like this. In fact, as a whole, men have been getting better about taking care of themselves, according to new data gathered by the American Academy of Family Physicians. “Men have begun paying more attention to their health and acting to maintain good health,” says Wanda Filer, MD, MBA, president of the AAFP and a practicing family physician. “They are getting physical exams, increasing their exercise activity, and getting their health care from their regular doctor.” With this encouraging news, it’s important to remember that men’s health is still a big concern. By keeping the following three points in mind, you can help yourself, or a loved one, lead a longer and healthier life. Health care is preventive, too. It’s a common misconception that you go to the doctor only when you’re sick or not feeling well. So, what’s the most common barrier that prevents men from seeing a doctor? Answer: themselves. According to a 2016 survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of the AAFP, 31 percent of men wait until they feel extremely sick before seeing a doctor, and 21 percent say they have no reason to go to a doctor when feeling healthy. As Filer says, “Not feeling sick is not necessarily the same as being healthy.” Early detection and preventive care are two of the most important ways to maintain health and prevent potential health concerns from becoming major problems. Step away from the screen. Though more men exercise in 2016 than they did in the AAFP’s 2007 survey (80 percent vs 74 percent), many men still spend a considerable amount of time looking at screens. In the 2016 online survey of 916 men across the country, the AAFP found that men spend, on average, about 20 hours each week working at a computer and 19 hours in front of a television. While it’s nearly impossible to avoid screens in this day and age, men should be motivated to take on more physical and active hobbies that can reduce stress and improve their physical health.

Develop a relationship with a family physician. An important step men can take to ensure they receive regular checkups and preventive care is to regularly visit a family physician. Nearly eight in 10 men (79 percent) have a regular doctor or health care professional they see when they are sick or want medical advice, however, a family physician not only treats the whole person, but the whole family. This is because an individual’s health should be a concern for the entire family. The value of a family physician is that they perform routine checkups, immunizations and screenings. They can also treat chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, asthma, arthritis and depression. “If more men develop ongoing relationships with their family physician, their perception of good health is more likely to become reality,” said Dr. Filer.

See What Some of Our Patients are Saying: I was in so much pain that I was in tears everyday. I thought I couldn’t be healed because I had suffered with the pain for so long and tried so many different treatments. My family was feeling the stress because I was so unhappy. Now I feel like I am one inch away from being healed! My pain level is a 16 on a scale from 1-10. Now I am down to a 1-2 and actually feel normal! I can take care of the things I need to do around the house, do my job properly and I feel like I can actually get out and ride my bike this summer. I am looking forward to exercising again. The staff at NCSN really cares, and I know they are generally concerned about me getting better. I had my doubts since I tried for over a year to get better, but this worked! Thank you, Jacquelyn W.

The attack of sciatica brought me to NCSN. Spinal Decompression Therapies have helped me in several different ways. My life is back, I don’t walk with a limp, I sleep better at night and my pain is gone. While coming to NCSN, I have learned that spinal maintenance prevents back attacks and drinking water and eating healthy food makes you feel well and it is a lifetime must. My symptoms of leg cramps and hip aches have gone away. Getting well has affected my family too. They would hurt and stress seeing me so miserable and in so much pain. I feel alive, my house is cleaner, and my thinking is clearer. I would describe the atmosphere and care as family like. The staff is very knowledgeable and each and every employee is so caring and concerned. What has amazed me the most about my care is the genuine concern, numerous therapy options, the Christian atmosphere and the treatment of all of the doctors. I am telling the world, I love them all. Thank you, Pamela E.

We are home to two Walmart stores. Walmart doesn’t publish the target population numbers where they choose to build, but clearly they expect good growth and our demographics meet their profile. To me, that feels like more “big store”, homogenous capacity than we need. We have attracted many of the other big box stores as well, including Home Depot, Target and many, many national franchises for ice cream, coffee and fast food. Are we losing our local flair? How many neon signs can our busy street horizons afford? With profits flowing out of northwest Georgia are we headed towards only minimum wage, service jobs in the future? There are many good reasons for buying in Paulding, some of which include: n Buying local can ultimately support YOU and your family. Many studies have shown that when you buy from independent, locally-owned operators, more of your money stays in the community and supports other local businesses. n Non-profits and churches on average receive over 250% more support from smaller businesses than large, corporate players. n Maintaining our unique community - having local places to eat, shop and have services done keeps Paulding true to itself. 5 Tips for Creating an NFL Man Cave

I

f you have always wanted to devote an entire room to the greatest game ever invented during the history of mankind, here are some tips on creating an NFL Man Cave you can be proud of. 1. The Room The first step to create your own NFL Mecca should center on room selection. I have found that garages, basements, screened porches, or patios tend to have the most potential. Having direct access to the outdoors for pizza deliveries and beer runs is certainly a plus, but not a deal breaker if you can’t manage it. After you’ve chosen the location, you want to start planning the layout and overall character of your room. 2. The Layout This one’s actually pretty straightforward and intuitive for most avid NFL fans. The room’s focal point is going

PAGE 28 PAGE 28

to be the television, so make sure you plan the layout so the most number of seats can be placed around it and every seat will have a clear, unobstructed view. Simply plan the rest of the room’s furnishings (like mini fridges, home bar setups, memorabilia shelves, etc.) around keeping things from obstructing the screen and you’ll be golden. If you can, it would be practical to plan out where things will go without actually moving them in because you’ll want to complete the next step before you flood the room with new furniture.

flags, football rugs, banners, team posters and artwork, etc.) to bring your room up to the next level. 4. The Tech In addition to displaying your team merchandise and colors, an Ultimate NFL Man Cave MUST have an HD television. The TV should be large enough so that everybody can see it clearly and have a decent speaker system so you don’t miss any bad calls. An often overlooked component for a man cave is a current generation game console. If you think you’re better off without a game system, consider this: with a Sony PS3, you can play Madden, watch Blu Ray movies, surf the Web *and* stream Netflix (and it’s cheaper than a regular Blu Ray player). Adding a game console to your set up makes the room for more usable when there’s no football to watch.

3. The Decor The colors of your NFL Team will certainly play a major role in the design of the room. Fortunately, most hardware stores have these paint schemes available, and if not, they can mix any color imaginable. Once you have the paint, decide how you want to lay it out on the walls (stripes, top and bottom, etc.). You might also want to try your hand at prominently painting your team’s logo on the wall. In addition to an awesome paint job you should also have some NFL merchandise on display (bobble heads, team jerseys,

5. The Beverage Strategy Admit it. Having to walk through the entire house to grab a drink from the kitchen could mean you miss a 75 yard touchdown pass or the humor of watching a field goal kicker pull his hamstring after making a 28 yard field goal in the 3rd quarter. Keeping your drinks close by means you can remain close to the action. Whether you simply keep a bucket of ice filled with drinks by your side, a stocked mini fridge in the corner, or go the whole hog and install a fancy wet bar and a kegerator, you’ll be glad you came up with a beverage strategy.

Always pushing the creative envelope, David has the same enthusiasm he brings when he’s hired to shoot for his commercial clients. No matter if he’s shooting a mother’s belly bump, a family portrait or a wedding, or the fabulous top athletes in Paulding County, David will surpass expectations and bring the experience to a whole new creative level. David has a mastery of lighting, styling, editing and most of all, a vision for capturing a portrait in time that tells the perfect story. “Hunting for doves brings a lot of joy to families that are anxious to kick off the fall hunting season,” said John W. Bowers, chief of Game Management. “Georgia has a great choice of fields to choose from with approximately 40 state public dove fields, plus opportunities on private land available to the public through a U.S. Department of Agriculture program called the Voluntary Public Access (VPA)/Habitat Incentive Program.”

The official 2016-2017 dove seasons are September 3-18, October 8-28 and November 24 - January 15. Shooting hours are noon until sunset on opening day and one-half hour before sunrise to sunset for the remainder of the season dates. Sunrise and sunset times are available on the Outdoors GA app (available free on ITunes or in the Google Play store) or at http://aa.usno.navy.mil . Many WMA public dove fields are reserved solely for quota hunts on opening day, so be sure to review dove hunting rules and regulations to ensure the availability of the field you plan to visit. Want to know what a field is expected to look like before you head that way to hunt? Each year, WRD biologists and technicians prepare a dove field forecast for wildlife management areas and some additional fields identifying available crops and anticipating the conditions for opening day. This forecast is available at www.georgiawildlife.com/DoveForecast. Regulations quick review: The daily bag limit is 15 doves per hunter. Collared doves may be taken, but do not affect the count of your daily limit. Any auto-loading or other repeating shotgun must be plugged to hold no more than three shot shells while hunting doves. And, as always, hunters must obtain permission from landowners before hunting on private property. Dove hunters age 16 and older must possess a Georgia hunting license and a free Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program (HIP) Permit. HIP provides biologists with needed information to ensure conservation of migratory bird populations while providing quality hunting opportunities. When hunting on a WMA, you also must possess a WMA license. Hunters may purchase licenses online at www.georgiawildlife.com/licenses-permits-passes, by phone at 1-800-366-2661 or at a license vendor location available online. Updated and accurate harvest rate estimates facilitate the successful management of doves. In 2003, the U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Research Division and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in cooperation with several states, including Georgia, initiated an ongoing dove banding project. Hunters can participate in this conservation effort by examining harvested doves for leg bands and reporting band numbers to the USFWS at www.reportband.gov or by calling 1-800-327-BAND. Planning on dove hunting at a private field? Be sure that field is legal by checking out the online brochure, “Dove Hunting and Agricultural Practices in Georgia,” available at www.georgiawildlife.com/hunting/dovebrochure.

h, the splendid spud! As American’s we can’t seem to get enough of this starchy, tuberous root vegetable known as the potato. According to FarmFreshDirect.net we not only grow a lot of potatoes (17.7 million tons), we eat a lot of potatoes, too (nearly 126 pounds per person per year). Potatoes contain a number of important vitamins, minerals and have as much fiber as that of whole grain bread and pasta. In cooking, you’re not limited to just baking, frying or boiling to enjoy a tasty tater. The potential is only limited to what you have in your cupboard.
