O’Rion Weems - #21 East Paulding High School O’Rion is the son of Clorissal Williams. He has played football since he was 11 years old and is a Linebacker for the Raiders. This season he is looking forward to performing and working hard to prove himself; as well as deciding from the five college offers he has received. O’Rion is on the basketball team for EPHS and will be running track this year for the first time. Although he is undecided on where he will attend college, he plans on furthering his education and playing college football after he graduates.

community Paulding Pregnancy Services 20th Annual Walk for Life Event Saturday September 16th, 2017 at 9:30 am

n Paulding County, assistance for women facing unplanned pregnancies can be found at Paulding Pregnancy Services. Founded in 1996, PPS has served thousands of clients through ongoing support, pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, and parenting and prenatal classes; all free of charge. That is why the Walk for Life is so important. On Saturday, September 16, 2017 Paulding Pregnancy Services will hold its annual “Walk for Life” fundraising event. This is the 20th year of the walk, and in addition to fund raising, it is also done to increase awareness of Paulding Pregnancy Services and the ministry they do within the community. They receive support from several area churches and some local businesses, but there are still many opportunities to “get the word out” about the services they offer. Paulding Pregnancy Services is a non-profit ministry with a genuine concern for sharing the love of Jesus Christ through words and actions. Dedicated volunteers serve Christ and our community by evangelizing, educating and caring for those who have experienced or who are at risk for an unplanned pregnancy, and without judgment. Events like the “Walk for Life” help PPS gain community awareness so they can continue to offer their services FREE and CONFIDENTIAL. PPS has asked walkers pre-register in order to get the brochures to solicit sponsors. Participation in the walk is open to all who are seeking an opportunity to be pro-active for the cause of LIFE both “born & unborn.” No graphic pictures or signs will be used. The monies raised from this event will go toward these free services for the clients.

A New Mobile App Provides Innovative Tool for Parents to Teach Teens to Drive Safely Contributed by Emma Harrington with Shepherd Center
S
hepherd Center, a top 10 rehabilitation hospital for people with spinal cord and brain injuries has developed a free, first-of-its-kind mobile app that will guide parents on how to better teach their teenagers to become safe drivers.
Partnering with the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) and IT management consulting firm CapTech, Shepherd Center’s certified driver rehabilitation specialists (CDRS) and injury prevention experts used their specialized training to create AutoCoach, an innovative app that makes it easier for adults to effectively teach their teens to drive defensively and safely. AutoCoach tracks training hours, as well as night driving hours, which in Georgia is a prerequisite for obtaining a driver’s license. The app’s curriculum is applicable in all 50 U.S. states. AutoCoach is available as a free download in the Apple App and Google Play stores. “With motor vehicle crashes being the leading cause of death for teens in our country, we must make sure our youngest drivers receive the proper training before they get behind the wheel,” said Harris Blackwood, director of the GOHS. “It has been a great pleasure to partner with Shepherd Center and CapTech in developing this first-of-itskind, comprehensive driver’s education app that will help parents, grandparents and other adults provide training in a manner teens will be able to learn and use when they begin driving on their own.” Features of AutoCoach’ include a customizable parent-teen agreement, a graduated driver’s licensing quiz by state, distraction notifications, a driving log and a 10-chapter curriculum for parents based on best practices. Those chapters cover basic topics, such as adjusting mirrors, seats and tire pressure, and the difference between double yellow and dotted yellow lines, as well as complex driving skills, such as merging onto crowded highways, driving around 18-wheelers and safely recovering from an overcorrection. Some parents might choose to spend very little time on the most basic chapters and spend more time teaching more complex skills, said Emma Louise Harrington, MSPS, Ed.M., director of injury prevention and education at Shepherd Center. And that’s fine. “Some kids already know the very basics and their parents are comfortable with their teen’s knowledge of those,” Harrington said. “But in the more complex chapters, it’s a good refresher for the parents, but vital that teens learn these things.” Harrington acknowledged that AutoCoach is a time commitment for parents, but she believes once parents weigh the time commitment against the risks, it’ll be an easy decision. “It will save somebody’s teenaged son or daughter life,” Harrington said. “We’re confident the curriculum is so precise and so needed on our roads, that it will prevent many teenager-related accidents.” Teens are a particularly vulnerable population on U.S. roadways because of their inexperience and risky driving tendencies. In Georgia, between 2013 and 2015, drivers ages 16 and 17 had the highest licensed-driver fatality rate among all motor vehicle crashes. And drivers ages 16 to 19 are three times more likely to die in a car crash than older, more experienced drivers.

Pierre St. Brice, 18, of Winston, Georgia, wishes AutoCoach had been available to the family of a 16-year-old who crossed a center lane in December 2015 and crashed into the car in which St. Brice was a passenger. The 16-year-old was using the social media app Snapchat while driving, authorities later told St. Brice. That driver died on the scene. St. Brice, a highly regarded football recruit, sustained a T-12 spinal cord injury, paralyzing him from the waist down. The need for AutoCoach is well documented. Studies show that one of the most protective factors against teenage injuries and fatalities due to car crashes are parents who model, monitor and enforce safe driving practices, Harrington noted. But rarely are parents and guardians trained in how to teach their teen to safely operate and maintain an automobile.

other’s Day and Father’s Day may get more attention, but National Grandparents Day, observed on September 10, has gained in popularity. If you’re a grandparent, you might expect to receive some nice cards, but if you want to make the day especially meaningful, you may want to consider giving some long-lasting financial gifts to your grandchildren. What might come to mind first, of course, is helping your grandchildren pay for college. You can choose from several college savings vehicles, but you may be especially interested in a 529 savings plan. With a 529 plan, your earnings accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses, such as tuition, books, and room and board. (Keep in mind that 529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income taxes and a 10% IRS penalty on the earnings.) You may be eligible for a state income tax incentive for contributing to a 529 plan. Check with your tax advisor regarding these incentives, as well as all tax-related issues pertaining to 529 plans. One benefit of using a 529 plan is contribution limits are quite generous. Plus, a 529 plan is flexible: If your grandchild decides against college, you can transfer the plan to another beneficiary. Generally, a 529 plan owned by a grandparent won’t be reported as an asset on the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), but withdrawals from the plan are treated as untaxed income to the beneficiary (i.e., your grandchild) — and that has a big impact on financial aid, a much bigger impact than if the plan was listed as a parental asset. Beginning with the 2017-2018 academic year, however, FAFSA now requires families to report income from two years before the school year starts, rather than income from the prior calendar year. Consequently, it might be beneficial, from a financial aid standpoint, for you, as a grandparent, to start paying for college expenses from a 529 plan in the year in which your grandchild becomes a junior. Contact a financial aid professional about the potential financial aid impact of any gifts you’re considering. A 529 plan isn’t the only financial gift you could give to your grandchildren. You might also consider giving them shares of stock, possibly held in a custodial account, usually known as an UTMA or UGMA account. One possible drawback: You only control a custodial account until your grandchildren reach the age of majority, at which time they can use the money for whatever they want, whereas distributions from a 529 savings plan must be used for qualified higher education expenses.

aving received this intelligence report, Jehoshaphat, King of Judah, was aware of the significance of the threat against his people. Conscious of his own frailty and the weight of his responsibility as leader, Jehoshaphat set himself to seek the Lord. While I consider Jehoshaphat’s posture in a moment of impending doom, I compare the gravity of this threat to my own life and the ones that I love. I’m reminded of a dear friend who has been diagnosed with cancer. I recall the face of a precious sister who recently lost her baby and a conversation with another friend who is grieving the choices made by her daughter. I think of those who have been emotionally and physically abandoned. I consider those facing battles in secret. Jehoshaphat’s devotion to the Lord was immediate— without delay. He did not reach out to trusted leaders, counselors, or friends. While he declared a fast throughout the land, he also entered into prayer…

medical Dispelling the Myths about ACL Injuries By Richard R. Maguire, MD, OrthoAtlanta
F
ootball is synonymous with Fall in Paulding county. Proper warm ups, cool-downs and safe practices are top of mind for players, their coaches and athletic trainers. Nevertheless, chance of injury exists, and one of the more common and dreaded football injuries is to the ACL. Most of us know or have heard of someone who has suffered an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL. Typically, the story will include mention of a telltale “pop” that can signal a ruptured knee ligament and the end of an athletic season. While as many as 200,000 such tears occur each year in the United States alone, many don’t understand exactly what they entail. Here are some of the most common myths about ACL injuries, along with the real facts. Myth: An ACL tear will eventually heal on its own. FALSE: Unlike other ligaments in the knee, the ACL does not repair itself after an injury. Those who expect to put their knees to regular, strenuous use, like athletes, usually opt for ACL reconstruction through orthopedic surgery, where the ligament is replaced completely. Myth: Women never tear their ACL’s FALSE: Several factors, including hormones, genetics, bone and muscle alignment, and even the way females react and respond in sports situations are all believed to contribute to the fact that young women are two to eight times more likely than their male counterparts to injure the ACL during athletic activities. Some studies, however, have shown a decrease in the risk of ACL tears when women do particular exercises prior to and during their sports season. Myth: Athletes tear their ACL most often when they collide with another player on the field. FALSE: Most ACL tears occur when a person’s knee twists underneath him, like when a player is coming down from a jump or when he or she is running down the field and suddenly cuts to change directions. As many as 70 percent of ACL injuries are incurred with little or no contact with another athlete. Myth: Tearing your ACL as a child will end your athletic career forever. FALSE: The fact is that 80-90 percent of kids will get back to playing sports at the same level they were playing before their injury. However, recovery can often be difficult and time consuming, usually taking anywhere from 6 months to sometimes up to a year of formal physical therapy. Further, those who have suffered a torn ACL appear to have a greater than normal chance of re-tearing the ACL a second time and so may need to take extra precautions. When experiencing a sports injury, it is important to consult with a trained sports medicine professional. Letting a sports injury go untreated may keep a player sidelined longer than if it had been treated promptly and correctly. OrthoAtlanta’s Richard R. home improvement Is Your Well Water Safe? Testing Is the Only Way to Know By Mary Carol Sheffield, Paulding County Extension Coordinator
M
any homes in Paulding rely on well water for their household water needs. Well water can be a great way to supply your water needs, but there are things you need to know if you are a well owner and steps you need to take to be sure that your drinking water supply is safe. Government agencies do not monitor or regulate water quality for home wells, and water testing is not required by any federal or state regulation. If you are one of the 1.7 million Georgians with a private well, you are responsible for the quality and safety of your well water. Testing your well water quality is important to your health. I often talk with homeowners who have questions about their well water and its safety. Many of them say, “Well it tastes fine and it smells fine.” Although taste, odor and appearance of your drinking water can give you an indication of its quality, those characteristics are not a definite indicator if the water is really safe or unsafe to drink. Contaminated water can taste and smell fine, whereas unpleasant-tasting or -smelling water can be safe to drink or use. Many drinking water problems can only be detected through laboratory testing of the water. You should consider well water testing if: l You have frequent and unexplained illnesses in your household. l You are concerned about the lead pipes or soldering in your home. l You detect a difference in the taste, smell or color of the water. l You are buying a new home with a well that has been out of use. l It comes from an improperly sealed or unprotected well, spring or cistern. l You spill fertilizers, pesticides, oil, gasoline or other toxic substances on the ground in or near the well. Water with high levels of certain minerals can be a health concern, or just a nuisance. Minerals like calcium, iron, and manganese are often present in Paulding County wells in concentrations that cause nuisance issues, like hard water, build up on fixtures, laundry stains, or just cause a bad odor in the water. Bacteria tests determine if water is free of disease-causing bacteria. These tests check for E. coli and total coliform bacteria, which can come from fecal contamination. This is a test that should be performed yearly on home wells. Pesticide and chemical tests are generally performed only if there is reason to believe a specific contaminant has entered the water system. Unfortunately, no single test provides information about all of the possible contaminants in water, but there are some basic tests that every well owner should consider as a regular part of home maintenance. The general schedule for basic well maintenance should include a yearly bacteria test and an expanded mineral test every 3 years. Even if your current water supply is clean and safe to drink, regular testing is important because it establishes a record of water quality that may help solve future problems. Well testing can be done through local UGA Extension offices. Water samples are tested through the UGA Agricultural and Environmental Services Laboratory in Athens. Fees and sampling procedures vary based on the test, so consult with the Extension Office for specific information.

Tyler has played football for 12 years and is a Linebacker for the North Paulding Wolfpack. His parents are Janeen and Rob Bird. This football season he is looking forward to competing and spending time with his teammates. Also for the last few years at NPHS, he has thrown shot-put and discus for the track team. Tyler will graduate in December and plans to enroll early in college and play football at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.

Brantley Mauldin - #17 Paulding County High School Brantley is the son of Dana Mauldin and Logan Mauldin. He has played football for eight years and is the Quarterback for the Patriot Nation. He is looking forward to growing and building chemistry with his teammates and having the best senior season possible. Brantley is also involved in Beta Club, National Honors Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes at PCHS. Although he is currently undecided on where to attend college, he plans on pursuing a career in sports medicine or physical therapy after his graduation.
Jordan Anderson - #2 South Paulding High School Jordan has played football for 14 years and is a Cornerback and Running Back for the Spartans. He is the son of Shonda Anderson. This season he is really “hyped” for his team and says, “We’ve been working hard over the off season and waiting to get back on the field to prove ourselves.” At SPHS, he also runs track participating in the 100m, 200m, running long jump and relay teams. After graduation, Jordan plans to attend Lafayette College and play for the football team.

7 Things to Consider Before Living with Livestock

nimals play a meaningful role in the lives of their owners. In fact, most people consider their furry friends part of the family. And while dogs and cats tend to be the most common companions, nowadays, the beloved family pet can come in many different shapes, sizes and species. Today, families across the country are opening their hearts and homesteads to various types of livestock, proving once and for all that not all pets have paws. Leanne Lauricella, founder of the popular rescue organization Goats of Anarchy and a consultant for Tractor Supply Company, has experienced this firsthand. Lauricella cares for more than 40 special needs, orphaned and disabled goats, as well as two pigs, and while she loves her hoofed herd, she says families should be aware of the unique challenges that come with raising such a pet. “It’s common for people to see a cute baby pig or goat and think, ‘I want one!’” says Lauricella. “These animals are adorable and make for great companions, but they do require a special type of commitment from their owners and it’s important for people to understand the responsibilities before deciding to adopt.”

To determine if livestock adoption is right for you, here’s a glimpse of what life with livestock really looks like. They get big It may sound obvious, but many would-be adopters forget that the once small, adorable baby animal they adopted will one day grow into a full-fledged adult. A pot-bellied pig, for example, may start out nice and little, but it will hardly be considered a lap animal when it reaches a whopping 100-250 pounds. They like having friends The majority of farm animals thrive in a herd or flock, and having companions is extremely beneficial to their long-term health and happiness. Before you get started, make sure you have the time and resources to care for multiple animals. Adjusting your lifestyle It’s important to note that your new animal isn’t going to adjust to your lifestyle. With farm animals, Lauricella says, it’s the other way around. Livestock animals generally rise with the sun, and when they do, you will too. And remember, there’s no snooze button on a hungry goat. A space to fit their needs Livestock animals need space to roam, but don’t underestimate the importance of also keeping them properly contained. While the size and strength of a fence will vary depending on the animals you plan to adopt, quality fencing should always be a high priority. The last thing you want is for your animals to outsmart their fence and roam into a nearby farm, field or neighborhood. Caring for them when they’re ill All animals are susceptible to illness, but livestock animals have a higher risk of contracting infections than their indoor counterparts. Veterinarians can help determine the right medical plan for your animal, but it’s vital for new livestock owners to identify a livestock veterinarian before their animal gets sick. Be sure it’s legal Livestock laws differ from place to place, so if you have plans to bring home a new pig or goat, it’s a good idea to check your city ordinances and homeowners association to be sure your new pet is allowed by local rules. Know where to go for supplies From feeders, food and treats to containment and healthcare, adopting livestock means shopping for a whole new set of supplies, and it’s important to know where to go. Being that we are right on the cusp of the going out and the coming in of the old and new harvests, I usually find myself with an overflowing of the beautiful produce from August’s last crops. In fact, I typically have enough cucumbers to feed a small country at the end of August/beginning of September. Because of this Blessing and the Blessing of my Nana who gave my mom this recipe, we have had this delicious treat my entire life. This was a staple on my dad’s table when he was growing up as a boy. Because he loved this recipe so much, it was one of the first my mom learned to make from his mom (my Nana). I have found myself making this super simple, super delicious cucumber salad for almost every Labor Day gathering we have had since my mom taught me how to prepare it. Hope you all enjoy!!
Nana’s Cucumbers with Sour Cream

2 large cucumbers. If you use fresh or “English” cucumbers, you do not need to peel and seed them. Just wash them well. If the cucumbers are “waxy” or out of season, peel and seed them. Cut the cucumbers in half, length wise and then slice into in 1/4 inch half-moon slices. 1 cup of real sour cream ½ finely diced Vidalia onion Juice of a whole lemon 1 tablespoon of sugar or sugar substitute Salt and Pepper to taste Mix all ingredients and chill for a couple of hours MELISSA’S MEASURE: Don’t let the end of summer find you sweating the small stuff!
