n 1919, Woodrow Wilson declared November 11th as Armistice Day following the Great War, or what we know as, World War I. Eventually, the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War would create the push to expand Armistice Day to Veteran’s Day: a day reserved to honor all military veterans. Veteran’s Day is a vital part of this country’s life force, so as the holiday nears, it’s time we pay our gratitude in any way we see fit. This month, we can pay homage by reflecting on the lives and service of our veterans in the Paulding County community. Paulding’s very own Justin Griswell is a Marine veteran who found inspiration in joining the ranks through a friend. Justin recalls when his friend, Jake Parker, graduated from Parris Island, a site for Marine Corps recruit training. Before the graduation ceremony came to an end, Justin knew that being a Marine was in his future. He stated that, “the following December I was in boot camp at Parris Island.” Justin joined the Marines in December of 2009 and remained on active duty until 2013. He served in the inactive reserves until August 2017. While on active duty, Justin climbed up the ranks to become Sergeant, with his MOS being 1391 Bulk Fuel Specialist. Justin spent the entirety of his career stationed in Beaufort, South Carolina.

travel Turn a New Leaf with a Fall Family Road Trip

W

ith the cooler temperatures of autumn flowing in, many Americans will be hitting the road to discover the natural beauty that the season brings. Whether they crave adventure, want to see the fall foliage or are just getting ready for the Thanksgiving holiday, families need to be prepared to ensure they are getting the most out of this travel season. Nothing puts a damper on a weekend getaway like car issues that could have easily been prevented by simple maintenance. The American Petroleum Institute’s Motor Oil Matters (MOM) program has been established to provide information to consumers on the importance of using high quality motor oils, and verifying the oils are properly identified on invoices and receipts. Oilchange locations and motor oil distributors that share MOM’s commitment - and submit to independent, third-party auditing - have the opportunity to be recognized by MOM through the Motor Oil Matters distributor and installer licensing programs.

PAGE 6

MOM recommends fall travelers arm themselves with a simple plan of action and preparation to help get to their destination:

Enjoy more than the season: Keeping everyone happy: Write out a packing list for each family member. Store these lists on your computer so you can adjust them for different seasons and trips. Kids can be easily entertained during long car rides in the backseat with trivia, coloring books, games, books, assorted toys and stuffed animals.

Change that oil: Motor oil is the lifeblood of your engine. One of the simplest steps you can take to ensure your vehicle is maintained is to change your motor oil with an API-licensed motor oil that meets your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. Be wary of deals that sound too good to be true, and make sure your value-priced oil change includes high quality motor oil. MOM has put together a checklist for consumers, to ensure they are confident when going into a shop. To download this checklist, please visit www.motoroilmatters. org.

Stop and pop: Bathroom breaks are always a good thing. They force you to get out of the car and talk with locals. A 10-minute break every two hours also increases alertness and adds to the overall sight-seeing experience. Expect the unexpected: Always have a car-safety kit packed for you and your family. It should contain: an auto escape tool, blankets, cell phone charger, cleaning items, flashlight, jumper cables, matches, pencil and notepad, warning lights or road flares, bottled water, non-perishable items and drinks, extra (hidden) cash, and a wellequipped first aid kit.

Breathe free: Replacing a dirty air filter can increase a vehicle’s life expectancy and fuel efficiency by reducing the strain on the engine, especially during warmer months.

Keep it clean: Save and bring a handful of plastic grocery bags in the car to use for trash, damp clothes, or a “sick” bag for any car-sick passengers.

Check your tires: Pay attention to your tire pressure and tread depth, as they are essential for increased automotive safety and optimum driving performance. The lower the tread depth is on your tires, the less traction you will have on wet and dry roads, and the greater the distance you will need to stop.

Parents Teach Gratitude & Thankfulness By Jennifer Little, Ph.D.

P

arents usually want to spoil their children and give them gifts. There is nothing wrong with that. They want their child to never lack for anything. They love their children and one way they demonstrate that love is to give the children gifts or experiences.

There is an imbedded problem in these gifts and experiences. When parents constantly give children toys, clothing, and/or privileges, they are not teaching their children a valuable lesson. The children not only don’t understand the costs and sacrifices parents have made for them, but also they develop attitudes of entitlement; the opposite of thankfulness and gratitude. Teaching thankfulness and gratitude is not taught directly. It is taught by adults who model the behaviors. Parents can consistently reinforce gratitude and thankfulness by showing the behaviors they want their children to demonstrate. These behaviors need to be 24/7 and 365 days a year, for the lessons to sink in. Special occasions are not the only times for gratitude and thankfulness. Words of praise and gratitude go a long way to both bond the child closer to the adults as well as teaching appropriate behaviors. What kind of words? How about something like these examples: l You are such a good helper! Thank you for what you’ve done today. l I really appreciate all your help. It has made my day easier and happier. l You did such a good job of (......chore/task.....). I’m grateful that you were able to do that for me. l I’m grateful I have such a wonderful, thoughtful child. l Look at how well you’ve done that job! You are getting so grown up and I know others will appreciate you as much as I do.

Different Ages, Different Skills

Preschoolers generally do not have the developmental awareness of others’ emotions/points of view or that other people may not have as much as they have. It is up to the parents to “open their eyes” to such concepts. Young children need to learn to share with others in ways that emotionally impact them. They could choose a gift to be given to a needy child during the holiday season. Perhaps parents could, with their older children, volunteer at soup kitchens or events for the homeless or disadvantaged. For children to understand they have more than others, they need to see that others have less than they do; perhaps by having children clean out their toys for those outgrown or not used, and donate them to centers themselves. In some families, before holidays and birthdays, the children “make room” for the new. When gifts came unexpectedly, the children had to release equal (or more) numbers of items to others before they could keep what had just been given. This approach has another hidden agenda: cutting down on the clutter of unwanted, unused or grown out of toys and clothing stashed in closets. Cleaning out the closets makes the task the child’s task rather than the adult’s task. The child has the responsibility of emotionally valuing and separating from the toys and clothing. It prevents the child from stashing “stuff” to have “just in case” or for other “security” reasons.

Critical Life Skills

Parents want their children to be liked, accepted and valued by other children and adults. The quickest way to social acceptance, friendships and being important to others is to value the others aloud. Friends appreciating each other become very close friends. These relationships, parent-child and child-peers, become the foundation for the child’s future relationships: employer-employee, marriage/significant other, and later on the child becomes the parent in his/her own parent-child relationships. Your child’s future is in your hands, depends on your willingness to teach him/her, and the emotional bonds your create with him/her. You are the model for your child’s behavior. Be thankful and grateful for your child, because that child stretches your own heart with love shared.

Now Available: A Non-Surgical Method Of Relieving Pain...

IF YOU’RE OVER THIRTY – THIS IS THE BEST TREATMENT YOU CAN USE FOR YOUR

SCIATICA, BACK PAIN, AND HERNIATED DISCS! The conditions this amazing treatment has proven successful are: • Sciatica • Disc Herniations • Lower Back Pain • Numbness in the Legs and Feet • Radiating Hip Pain • Neck Pain Finally, there’s a treatment to conquer back and leg pain without dangerous medications or painful surgery. My name is Dr. Amy Valente, owner North Cobb Spine and Nerve Institute. I understand what it feels like to live in pain, because I see it every day. I’ve seen hundreds of people with disc herniations and sciatica leave the office pain free. When cushions in your back joints, called discs, get injured or wear out, they begin to degenerate and cause pain. Bulging and herniations begin to form, pressing on the nerve roots. The most common invasive treatment for disc herniations is surgery. Even with health insurance the patient is left with their own portion of the bill, in excess of $10,000$15,000, and sometimes more. In addition, the recovery time and missed work can be any where from 3 to 6 months, not to mention the obvious severe risks associated with all surgeries.

Before You Go Under The Knife And Opt For Spinal Surgery...

You should seriously consider a less invasive approach called spinal decompression. Non-surgical spinal decompression is a new technology that has been proven to help discherniations. It creates a vacuum effect on the disc, which pulls the disc back into its normal position and brings in a fresh blood supply to promote healing.

Proof This Treatment Works

While non-surgical spinal decompression is a rather new treatment, there’s plenty of research to back up its claims. Here’s just a handful of scientific studies... “We thus submit that decompression therapy should be considered first, before the patient undergoes a surgical procedure which permanently alters the anatomy and function of the affected lumbar spine segment.”– Journal Of Neuroscience Research

...there may be hope. Now, a local doctor has what may be the most important treatment in helping these conditions.

“86% of the 219 patients who completed the therapy reported immediate resolution of symptoms” – Orthopedic Technology Review “Vertebral axial [spinal] decompression was successful in 71% of the 778 cases” – Journal of Neurological Research “Good to excellent”relief in 86% patients with Herniated discs”– The American Journal of Pain Management “Decompression therapy reported a 76.5% with complete remission and 19.6% with partial remission of pain and disability”– Rio Grande Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery Another study presented at the American Academy of Pain Management in 2007 showed... “Patients reported a mean 88.9% improvement in back pain and better function...No patient required any invasive therapies (e.g. epidural injections, surgery).” As you can see, spinal decompression has a high success rate .What this means for you is that in just a matter of weeks, you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again.

Could This Be Your Sciatica And Back Pain Solution?

It’s time for you to find out if spinal decompression will be your sciatic pain solution. For 15 days only, until November 15, 2017, I am running a special offer where you will find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression. This offer is normally priced at $250, so you’re saving a considerable amount by taking me up on this offer. What does this offer include? Everything. Here’s what you’ll get... • Anin-depthconsultationaboutyourhealthandwell-being where I will listen...really listen...to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A full set of specialized x-rays (if clinically necessary) to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms...( NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free.

l

info@ourtownfamily

Call today...phone 678-574-5678 The normal price for this type of evaluation, including x-rays, is $250 so you’re saving a considerable amount by taking me up on this offer. Call today and we can get you scheduled for your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening.

Here’s what our patients have to say: I took a fall in May of 2017 which put my hip an inch out of place. Eight weeks later it was still bothering me and I had significant tingling in my legs. It was impossible to take normal strides and every step was excruciating. After coming to North Cobb Spine and Nerve my pain level has dropped from an eight on a scale of 1 to 10 to a one! I can now step sideways, backwards, and take care of my responsibilities around the house. When I look back at my previous quality of life, I was not sure that I wanted to live another year, but now I want to live another ten years! The atmosphere and care at North Cobb Spine and Nerve is the best. Everyone is pleasant, professional, and cares about each and every patient. All the women are very knowledgeable and use excellent teamwork to provide me with the best care I have ever received. I would be proud to have any of them as a daughter! o help achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you should save and invest regularly. But that’s only part of the picture. You also need to protect your financial assets in various ways. One such method is guarding your personal information – especially any information that could be linked to your financial accounts. It’s obviously important to be vigilant at any time, but you need to be even more on your toes during the holiday season, when fraudsters are particularly active. So, to help keep your important data under wraps during the holidays, consider these suggestions: • Extend your protection to all mobile devices. Identity thieves can now compromise your mobile devices by installing spyware that steals usernames, passwords and credit card information. Fortunately, you can fight back. By doing a little research online, you can find the best mobile security software for your needs. • Use multiple passwords. Online security specialists recommend that you use different passwords for each new online shopping site you visit during the holiday season. Although this might seem like a hassle, it can be helpful, because even if identity thieves were to grab one of your new passwords, they still couldn’t use it for other sites you may visit. And you can even find a free online program that can help you keep track of all your passwords. • Be suspicious of “huge savings.” It happens every holiday season – identity thieves develop fake sites with attractive graphics and stunningly low prices on a variety of items, especially digital devices. If you fall for these pitches, you won’t get any merchandise, but you might get a handful of headaches once the bad guys have your credit card number and other personal information. To prevent this, be wary of any deal that sounds too good to be true, and do some digging on the websites that offer these mega-savings. • Watch for fake shipping notices. During the holidays, when you may do a lot of online shopping, you will probably receive some legitimate shipping notices. But the bad guys have gotten pretty good at generating fake notices designed to resemble those from UPS, FedEx and even the U.S. Postal Service. If you were to click on the link provided by one of these bogus notices, you could either take on some malware or get taken to a “phishing” website created by the shipping notice forgers. Your best defense: Only shop with legitimate merchants and only use the tracking numbers given to you in the email you received immediately after making your purchases.

www.edwardjones.com

• Keep your Social Security number to yourself. As a general rule, don’t give out your Social Security number online — to anyone. No legitimate retailer needs this number. Finally, be aware that not all attempts at stealing your personal information will come online. When you’re out shopping at old-fashioned, brick-and-mortar stores, consider bringing just one credit card with you — and protect that card from prying eyes. By following these precautions, you should be able to greatly reduce the risk of being victimized by identity thieves and other miscreants. And the more comfortable you are in doing your holiday shopping, the more you can enjoy the season. WAREHOUSE of Hope By Emma Finger

W

arehouse of Hope is more than just your local food bank. We are blessed to be able to serve 600-800 families a week that are in need; but we do so much more. So far this year, we’ve had 170 individuals turn their lives over to Christ during our First Time Guest Orientation. We partner with Terence Lester who started “Love Beyond Walls.” This ministry helps take care of the homeless in the city limits of Atlanta. Love Beyond Walls not only helps these individuals with food but also gives them a place to shower, get clean clothes, and a free haircut. We partner with Destination Church in Waycross, Georgia. They serve 200+ families weekly with their food bank. We collect and recycle used cell phones to be able to dig wells in Burkina Fauso, Africa. Partnering with Must Ministries, we served 2,700 children this summer through our Summer Lunch Program. We are also able to help Paulding County Schools with their

in the darkest moments in our lives. What we do wouldn’t be possible without the help and donations from people just like you. We are able to assist clients with food, clothing, baby diapers, adult diapers, toiletry items, and many other things. To receive assistance we need first time guests to attend one of our orientations which are held Mondays and Fridays at 10:00am or Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm.We take any gently used donations! All donations are tax deductible. We are always in desperate need of volunteers. We are also approved to take community service workers.

Back Pack Program. This program sends food and snacks home with children who receive free lunches or reduced lunches so they have food to eat on the weekends and during the summer. For over 20 years, by the grace of God, and through our supporters, we have been able to expand. All of this started with Founder Craig Parson. He felt God leading him to do more for our community. One simple verse changed everything. 1John 3:17 “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?” After he had a heart attack, at age 36, he realized very quickly how we are all only one life event away from everything falling apart. We all fall on hard times and bad things happen to good people. Sometimes all you need is a little help from someone, somewhere, to get back on your feet. That is what we hope to be here at Warehouse of Hope. We want to be the hands and feet of Christ. Be the place you come to when things get hard. There is always hope even

Quick Tips to Prepare Your Home for Holiday Guests

A

s the holidays approach, the decorator in us gets excited about how to deck the halls and drape the tinsel to create a festive home for the season. Social media is full of inspiration, but before you embark on decorating projects, the following are a few easy ideas to ensure your home is as functional and welcoming as it is festive for family and friends.

‘Tis the season to repair, repaint, refresh

A pristine paint job is the perfect backdrop for holiday entertaining. Throughout the year, the walls of your home take a lot of abuse, from kids banging their toys into the corners and chairs hitting the walls, to the nail holes and cracks that appear over time. To restore your walls to their former glory, fill in those dents, holes and cracks before you repaint with ALEX Plus Spackling, which delivers professional strength and durability when making repairs on a range of surfaces such as drywall, wood and metal. If you have troublesome reoccurring cracks that just won’t go away, ALEX Flex Spackling is the perfect solution for a lasting, seamless repair. And for the ultimate professional finish, use ALEX Flex Premium Molding & Trim Sealant to fill gaps and cracks around interior window and door frames and along baseboards, chair rails and crown molding for a crack-proof, seamless finish. With your walls repaired and looking like new, you’re now ready to paint and decorate for a fresh, updated look.

Create a safe, cozy area for fireside chats

A warm, roaring fire is a cozy centerpiece for after-dinner storytelling and catching up with family and friends. Whether your home is equipped with a gas or wood-burning fireplace, it is important to ensure the unit is in good working order. First, inspect the area and repair any damage to key pieces, such as the baffle, damper or mantle that may have occurred during the year. Next, schedule a time for a thorough chimney sweeping to remove excess buildup of soot and creosote. A clean, maintained fireplace not only makes for a festive environment, but can also serve as an element to heat your home, reducing seasonal stress on your furnace.

Corral guest clutter in your main living areas

There’s nothing like visiting with old friends or reconnecting with family members you haven’t seen in a while. Of course, with the increased foot traffic in and out of your home comes the question of where to put your guests’ belongings so they are out of the way and organized. If you have a coat closet, be sure to clean it out and make room for your guests by storing your coats in another room. You might also consider using an additional coat rack and strategically placing some festive decorative baskets for holding shoes and purses.

Create a kid-friendly space

If you plan on hosting friends and family members who have small children, take some time to kid-proof your home, particularly anywhere they are likely to play. Along with putting plug covers on all of the outlets, remove any common hazards young kids might get into. Secure electrical and window treatment cords, protect hard-edged furniture and put breakables out of reach. Once the groundwork for a safe, kid-friendly space is cleared, add toys, games, comfy pillows and more, so they’re entertained and feel welcome.

Prepare the outdoors, too

When it comes to prepping for holiday guests, don’t forget about high-traffic areas outside the home. Be sure to clear the walkways and replace outdoor lights with fresh bulbs to help guests safely navigate their way to your home. (BPT)

faith Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving Are One in the Same By Derek Dill

V

Our military veterans and active duty personnel do not want, nor do they need our sympathy; they need our support and respect. It takes a special person to be willing to sacrifice their family life, their time, and in some cases their lives, to serve their country and defend their fellow countrymen and women.

eteran’s Day is an annual holiday created for the purpose of honoring our nation’s military veterans of the past and present. It is the one day of the year we are to remember those who have served, those who have fought, and those who have died so we can enjoy a free life. My question is, shouldn’t we be thanking our veterans and their families every day of the year for the sacrifices they have made so that we may speak freely, govern freely, have a chance to follow our dreams and live where and how we want? A holiday is usually a festive, happy time. However, I see Veteran’s Day as a sobering, somber time that both saddens me and fills my heart with pride. It saddens me to know that so many who have served in the Armed Forces have lost their lives in serving our country. It fills my heart with pride to know that people love this nation enough to give their lives so that my family and theirs can be free. They have all fought for the cause of world peace and should be celebrated every day of the year. Every time I see a person in the military I walk up to them, shake their hand and thank them for serving our nation.

PAGE 18

We should ensure the younger generations understand what the true meaning of Veteran’s Day is all about. They should know why their grandparents, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles made sacrifices to ensure that our nation and our freedoms would always be defended and secure.

Veteran’s Day is not just a thirty second news clip of the President laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is one out of the many days of the year that we should honor America’s veterans. We should all give thanks to and pray for those who have and do serve in the Armed Forces. Thank them for their sacrifices and their steadfast resolve to bring about peace to a volatile world. Pray for their safe return to those who await them with open arms.

Veteran’s Day is more than a legal holiday. It is a day to honor all who serve in peacetime and in war. Honor them for their patriotism, the love of their country, and their willingness to sacrifice for the common good. Every time you see our nation’s flag, say the pledge of allegiance, hear the Star Spangled Banner, or even see the President giving a speech, know it was because of our veterans, that we have a flag, say a pledge, sing a song, and vote for someone who will lead the most free country in the world. All one has to do is walk through Arlington National Cemetery first thing in the morning, as the misty fog rises over the landscape and reveals thousands of headstones, lined in rows on that hallowed ground, to know that our country is forever indebted to our veterans for their courage and unselfish service to a country that we all love. Veteran’s Day. Shouldn’t it really be called Thanksgiving?

God bless our troops, God bless our veterans, and may God bless America!

Your Heart Health Could Be at Risk during the Holidays

By Mark Rosenberg, M.D.

W

ith several big holidays approaching, you may feel overwhelmed with too much to do and are starting to feel cranky and out of sorts. Along with all the usual responsibilities of jobs, family routines, etc, this season brings the added pressure of financial concerns from holiday spending. Add those concerns to overeating high salty and fatty foods, drinking more alcohol, sleeping less, and skipping regular exercise, all of which can accompany the holiday season and we’ve created quite a little powder keg of stress. When stress gets out of control, your adrenal glands pump out too much adrenaline that causes a feeling of anxiety. You may become restless and unable to sleep, much like the feeling you get when you’ve had too much caffeine. It can cause irregular heart rhythms as well as gastric upsets and inflammation that can set the stage for sudden, as well as chronic illness. Excess adrenaline produces a stress hormone called cortisol which causes blood sugar and blood pressure to rise. It also causes us to store a lot of fat around our mid-section. Chronic over-secretion of cortisol can lead to diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease, a weakened immune system, damage to arteries and the development of atherosclerosis. These chronic conditions can put you at much higher risk for a sudden heart attack during stressful conditions. How To De-Stress Your Heart The holidays are all about our hearts - our emotional hearts are focused on dealing with friends and relatives and wanting to give our loved ones a joyful and beautiful time while having fun ourselves. Our spiritual hearts are focused on trying to embrace the spirit of the season and extending good will, time, and often money to those less fortunate. Our physical hearts are the part of us that feels the over-taxing of ourselves trying to do all these things at once. Here’s what I recommend to help control the effects of all the “holiday doing” on your heart: De-stress yourself. Include at least 30 minutes of exercise everyday which helps release harmful stress agents like adrenaline and cortisol. In addition, take at least 15 minutes to sit quietly or go outside and take a walk through nature. Decrease caffeine. Switch to herbal teas or ice water with lemon in it. Watch your food intake. It’s okay to sample a little bit of holiday food in small portions, but draw the line at overloading on salty foods which can drive your blood pressure up suddenly. Get enough sleep. Many people forego sleep during these busy holidays, but that’s one of the worst things you can do for your health. Even if you have to sneak off for an hour’s nap here and there - your heart will thank you for it. Accept what you cannot change. Holidays often bring together a mix of personalities and when alcohol is involved, some personalities can ignite into stressful combatants. Old and unresolved issues may arise. Take responsibility for what you can do to create harmony in these situations and accept that you can’t change some things or people. Prioritize your schedule. List what needs to be done first, second and what can be left for another day. Try to consolidate holiday shopping trips so you’re not constantly running back and forth to stores, and don’t wait until the last minute to shop for gifts. Stress can lead to a host of diseases, particularly sudden heart attack. Taking time during the holidays to fit some needed “me-time” in, exercising, relaxing, visiting with friends and family, laughing, can go a long way in helping to control stress levels and save your heart!

gardening By Chip McDaniel

S

quanto is known to many Americans for his special place in American history and particularly, the First Thanksgiving celebration. What many Americans know is that Squanto helped the Pilgrims overcome challenges that were being faced by this new generation of Americans. When the Pilgrims arrived in New England in the 17th century, they found the soil in the area to be ill-suited to farming. This was due the heavy glacial activity that brought stone, sand and boulders with it. The scouring of the land resulted in a poor quality, acidic soil mixed with lots of rocks.

Unlike the soil in other parts of America that is often up to 14 inches thick, the soil near Plymouth Rock was only a few inches thick, making it more difficult for crops to develop a healthy root structure. The Native Americans overcame these difficulties by developing larger numbers of small gardens, often a garden just large enough to support one family. In conjunction with a gardening technique known as the “Three Sisters Garden,” these small gardens succeeded. When the Pilgrims arrived, they attempted to replicate their own methods from Europe, with large, rectangle shaped communal gardens. For three years the Pilgrims

attempted to utilize this model but found themselves starving to death. When Squanto shared the Indians’ techniques for farming, things changed immediately. The Pilgrims abandoned the large, communal concept and each family became responsible for their own plot of land and food stores. By switching to the smaller, independent gardens, the soil in one central location was not so quickly depleted. Of course, the Pilgrims also switched to the ‘Three Sisters’ technique, which involves planting crops together, rather than separated in individual tracts of land. This combination allows the crops to work together in conjunction so the soil remains healthy and balanced. Corn, beans and squash were staples of the Native American diet, and each one of these contributed to a healthy garden. The corn acts as a pole for the bean vines to climb, eliminating the need and expense of finding real poles. The beans add nitrates to the soil, which helps other plants grow, and the squash provides the ground cover that prevents weeds, and helps the soil retain moisture.

Thanksgiving would have not only had higher nutritional content than our vegetables today, but would have tasted better. Of course, many people observe that abandoning the communal farming method and putting each family in charge of their own food supply encouraged everyone to put their best effort toward producing a food supply instead of relying on others and hoping for the best. Around the world today, gardeners, farmers and governments are actively working to promote healthy soil conditions. The use of manure and artificial fertilizers help to reintroduce some elements back into the soil, but come with their own drawbacks. The 17th century techniques employed by Squanto and the Pilgrims that led to the First Thanksgiving celebration are still valid today and can be used by anyone, from the beginning gardener to large farm corporations looking to produce healthy, nutrition-packed crops that are easy on the soil. A detailed history of the Pilgrims’ First Thanksgiving and the revolutionary techniques they learned in Squanto’s Garden can be found at www.firstthanksgivinggarden. com.

On Sunday’s, you can find the family praising and worshipping at West Ridge Church in Dallas. In their free time, they love to put their recently purchased boat to work on the waters of Lake Hartwell in South Carolina. They have properly ordained their new boat, “The Lost Shaker of Salt.” As the Griswell’s prepare for Veterans Day, Justin shares their Veteran’s Day traditions. The family makes it a priority to spend the day with his grandfather, also known as Pop. Justin’s grandfather served in the Army several years ago. Justin stated that, “I always like to thank fellow Veterans when I see them because without those before us, we wouldn’t be able to do the things we do today.”

My wife, Kaylie, has been nothing but supportive through my time in the Marines [and] the Lord blessed us with a little girl while we were in the Marines [as well].” Justin and his family are beyond blessed to have such an expansive support system. From his parents and sister to his in-laws, he has nothing but gratitude for the individuals in their lives who have helped them in the times that they have needed family the most. Justin couldn’t talk about his career and life without mentioning a few other special people as well. One of those individuals was Colonel Dave Carmichael, who motivated him to push for success in the Marines. Justin mentioned, “When you’re far from home, sometimes and abroad in other places, the love and support of friends and family really push you through and keep you going day to day. We would be here all day if I thanked each and every one that supported me through the years, [but] I would like to say a special thanks to Jake Parker, Mark Webb, and Justin Bruce.”

Firearms Deer Season and ACTT for Firearms Safety

Georgia Game Check: All deer hunters must report their harvest using Georgia Game Check. Deer can be reported on the Outdoors GA app (which now works whether you have cell service or not), at gooutdoorsgeorgia.com or by calling 1-800-366-2661.

or many hunters, the opening day of firearms deer season feels a little like Christmas morning does to a child. Firearms deer hunters took to the woods Saturday, October 21 and can continue through January 14 2018 statewide. “Georgia is one of the greatest deer hunting states in the country,” said Charlie Killmaster, state deer biologist for the Wildlife Resources Division. “We have one of the longest deer seasons, our deer harvest is sustainably among the highest, and the quality of bucks is unrivaled in the Deep South. Don’t take this awesome opportunity for granted. Grab your favorite deer rifle and hit the woods!” During firearms deer season last year, almost 320,000 hunters harvested 260,765 deer in the state. The use of regulated deer hunting ensures that Georgia’s deer population continues to be healthy and strong. Either Sex Day Map: Hunters can check out an interactive map created to see the opportunities available for the counties they hunt. If you hunt on National Forest land, either-sex days may be different than on private land. More info at http://georgiawildlife.com/hunting/ deer-opportunities.

encourages everyone to review the ‘Four Primary Rules of Firearms Safety’ before heading to the woods. Of the more than 600,000 hunters afield last year, Georgia reported 33 hunting incidents, one of which involved firearms. Firearm safety should be a first priority for all hunters. So make sure you are familiar with the four primary rules of firearms safety. The following checklist, is covered in all hunter education courses and easily can be remembered with the acronym ACTT:

Hunters are allowed a harvest of up to 10 antlerless deer and no more than two antlered deer (with one of the two antlered deer having a minimum of four points, one inch or longer, on one side of the antlers).

A – Always treat every firearm as if it were loaded. C – Control the muzzle of the firearm at all times. T – Be certain of the Target and what is in front of it and beyond it.

Georgia hunters have access to more than one million acres of public hunting land across the state, including over 100 state-operated wildlife management areas. In addition to traditional hunts, a number of special hunts are offered, including ladies-only and adult/child hunts. Dates and locations for these hunts, as well as WMA maps, can be found in the 2017-2018 Georgia Hunting Seasons and Regulations Guide at http://georgiawildlife. com/hunting/regulations.

T – Keep your finger outside of the Trigger guard until you are ready to shoot. For more information on firearms safety, visit http:// georgiawildlife.com/hunting/huntersafetytips or contact the Wildlife Resources Division Hunter Education office at 770-761-3010.

ACTT: 4 SIMPLE RULES TO REMEMBER FOR FIREARMS SAFETY While only a small fraction of hunters are ever involved in a hunting incident, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD)

To pursue deer in Georgia, hunters must have a valid hunting license, a big game license and a current deer harvest record. Licenses can be purchased online at http://georgiawildlife.com/licenses-permits-passes, by phone at 1-800-366-2661 or at a license agent (list of agents available online)

hat is an ESA, Emotional Support Animal, many ask. It is any animal that brings emotional support to someone so they can cope and function better in society, participate in events, travel, and just overall feel comfort from their ESA which then allows them to have quality of life wherever they may roam. Specific disorders lend themselves well to having an Emotional Support Animal including but not limited to: Depression, Panic Disorder, PostTraumatic Stress Disorder, Autistic Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and more.

Emotional Support Animals help one feel calmer, aid in maintaining lower blood pressures, and much better sleep quality and duration, to name a few. Though all animals can potentially serve as a Support Animal, differing species bring extra specific things with them. For example, the purr of a cat can be particularly calming and soothing thus aiding sleep and blood pressures; just as a dog would be really helpful in getting someone outside to walk them and be outdoors with them which could help the person that can’t go out of their home due to anxiety or depression. What makes a great ESA, is the animal that helps the individual with their specific struggles. To qualify for an ESA, one’s animal needs to be evaluated by a mental health professional that will assess the individual and their symptoms, and determine if they can benefit from such. If so, then they can produce a document signed with specific information in it that suffices to qualify one’s animal as a specific “Emotional Support Animal.” With this letter, one is allowed to fly with their animal for free in the cabin with them at their feet, their animal has to be allowed to live with them regardless if pets are allowed in the housing or not, and they must be allowed to accompany their human into public establishments regardless of other laws on pets being on premises because it would be an Emotional Support Certified Animal.

Available for Adoption: My name is SKYE (DOB ~06/18/2017), a black mackerel tabby and white domestic shorthair, and I’m originally from the state of Florida! I was turned into Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services when I was only 2 months old. When news that Hurricane Irma would hit Florida, Jacksonville ACPS reached out to Best Friends Animal Society, and on 09/08/17, I made my way to Atlanta (along with many others) so that Jacksonville ACPS would have some room for the cats that would eventually be displaced by Hurricane Irma. Best Friends then reached out to Fancy Feline Rescue, and on 09/10/17, and they took me into their care. I am a somewhat shy but friendly kitty who will purr when you hold me, and I am still full of those fun kitten antics. Typical kitten that I am, I’m curious, fun-loving, and would love to learn to trust my new owner. I promise I’ll provide you with years of love, laughter, loyalty and companionship if you’ll give me the chance. I am spayed, up-to-date with vaccines, negative for Feline FIV/FeLV, dewormed, have received flea preventative, am microchipped, and will be eligible to receive a 30-day free trial of pet health insurance. My adoption fee is $125

Cats are fulfilling a growing role in this arena these days. When picking a cat for an Emotional Support Animal, it is important to consider specific breeds depending upon one’s needs. For example, a Bengal is a highly intelligent, very active, water loving breed of cat, therefore is likely a great ESA for a person with ADHD. Whereas, if someone has Panic Disorder then a differing breed would better lend itself here. A Kurilian Bobtail is another highly intelligent breed that is active, but much less energetic than a Bengal. These cats can play and snuggle too, and are extremely loyal to their human. Lastly, if someone just needs a snuggler; perhaps a person with depression or is older and less ambulatory, then a Ragdoll or American Shorthair may be the perfect pet. These cats enjoy laying in one’s lap and just being petted; they aren’t upset if there is no playtime but only snuggle time always.

Whatever the symptoms and diagnosis, a trained professional should be able to point you toward the best ESA for you. Also, they can help get your pet certified as an ESA so that one’s quality of life can be vastly improved. For more information visit www.TherapyPetsFly.com

h November, what a wonderful month! A month to give thanks for all of our many blessings. A month to share precious time with family and friends. A month to celebrate with bountiful feasts. I chose this particular recipe to share this month because it is a side dish that has been on my family’s Thanksgiving table since before I was born. My sweet, sweet maternal grandmother, MaMa, started making this when my mom and uncle were wee little. Since then, if this dish does not appear on every table prepared for a holiday or special celebration in our home, there would most certainly be a revolt of great magnitude.

It’s simple, but packed full of flavor and compliments just about anything you want to serve with it. I hope it becomes a staple on your tables too, for the holiday or any ordinary weekday.

MaMa’s Brown Rice 1 1 1 2 2

cup of long-grain rice stick of salted butter large yellow onion – chopped small cans of beef broth (double strength if you can find it) small cans of sliced mushrooms, drained well (optional)

Melt the butter in a large skillet. Add the onions and rice. Cook on medium until the onions are softened and the rice has “browned” slightly. Put the rice, butter, and onions in a 13x9 baking dish. If you are going to use the mushrooms, scatter them over the rice. Finally, pour in the two cans of broth. Cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake in a preheated 375 degree oven for 45 minutes.

Melissa’s Measure:

I thank God daily for my cornucopia of blessings, but because this month we especially recognize those blessings, I want to give a great big thanks to my cherished husband, my beautiful family, and my incredible friends. You and your unconditional love, continued support, and unending prayers give me ALL that I need to be grateful for on this day of Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family & God Bless! PAGE 30 PAGE 30
