F
all is on our heels, so what better way to reap the harvest of a couple of Paulding locals than to simply acknowledge all their hard work and service to the community? This article can be just that; recognition for a pair who have spent the seasons of their lives tending to the community and their world as a whole. After seasons of planting seeds, the time comes to reap the fruits of that labor. Sometimes taking time to remember the dedicated work put in is rewarding, especially when it comes to Mary Lou and David Carmichael, a couple who completely embody what it means to give back to others. Lou and Dave are a married couple originally from Chattanooga, TN, who found their way to Paulding County 38 years ago. The pair have been married for 43 years, and have a huge family to show for their love. The duo raised their four children right here in Paulding. Their son, Josh, and daughters, Tara, Kellie, and Melissa, though initially homeschooled, completed their academic career in the Paulding County school system. The four graduated from East Paulding High and then moved on to their respective college careers. Now their children have passed on the torch themselves and have expanded Lou and Dave’s family. The Carmichaels now have 12 grandchildren with their 13th scheduled to make his or her arrival in February 2018.

Before Lou and Dave’s offspring made an entrance into the world, the two had very humble beginnings. It all began with a Sadie Hawkins school dance in which a friend of Lou’s intentionally asked the one guy that Lou had her eye on to the dance. With vengeance on her mind, Lou asked Dave, the guy her friend had been after to no avail, to the dance and he accepted. And with a simple “yes” to a Sadie Hawkins dance, Lou and Dave’s romance sprouted. 52 years later, and their love has truly blossomed.

he Board of Directors of the Paulding County Boys & Girls Club has announced it will continue its commitment to build great futures for youth in Paulding County by hosting the 13th Annual Golf for a Cause Tournament to support its youth development programming. Through key partnerships and programs, Boys & Girls Clubs is working to help kids and teens succeed in school, live healthy, and become leaders. Funding from the golf tournament will support several program areas: Education and Career, Character and Leadership, Health and Life Skills, the Arts, Sports, as well as Fitness and Recreation. All event proceeds will directly serve the youth of the Paulding County Boys & Girls Club.

“We’ve got a twenty plus year record of supporting and developing our county’s youth through our Club, but it takes funding to keep our doors open,” said Robert Stephens, Paulding County Board President. “It not only takes dedication and hard work from our staff on a daily basis, it also takes funding to ensure our kids have the resources they need to reach their full potential.” Currently, the Paulding County Boys & Girls Club serves roughly 100 kids each day providing an environment where youth feel safe and secure to dream, discover and develop their potential. The organization is continually working to ensure that all the youth it serves are graduating on time, living healthy lifestyles, and giving back to their communities.

BGCMA also oversees Camp Kiwanis, a 160-acre outdoor residence camp. While the cost to effectively serve those who need us most is more than $5,700 per member, BGCMA asks families to pay only a $60 annual membership fee and no child is turned away due to inability to pay. hat can we offer our adopted children about their heritage? Why is it important to have this to share with them? Where do we start to get this information for them? Is it OK to let them know they have similarities with our families; is this true or wishful thinking? What does the future hold for them – and their ancestors?

My husband was doing extensive genealogy research for our family. As he had a breakthrough, he emerged out of his office with the news that he found a string of relatives from the 1200’s. My son looked down and seemed very sad. The day we located some additional news about our genealogy, it stirred thoughts he had himself. He asked more about his birth parents and their heritage. We shared what little information we had and then he said “well, I will just hang on to your genealogy mom, since I don’t have any of my own.” I shared that he did have his very own too and strained my brain to remember what I could from what his birth mother had said many years ago. I had foggy details of the few lone phone calls so very long ago, not much for this young man to get excited over. My heart fell to the ground for him. I fought back the tears; it was so hard to see him in this struggle that need not be. I feel getting as much information and writing down all you learn when you first adopt is priceless to our children and for their future.

I am now going over family photos from our great-grandparents, and working on framing them for our family wall. They are precious old images of my family and I handle them with the utmost care and reverence. Since I was 30 when we adopted, our son doesn’t remember my grandparents, let alone my great-grandparents. At a recent funeral of my great uncle, I shared with my son the photos of my grandmother’s side of the family. We noticed how he looks so much like them, even though there was no biological tie. His blue eyes and milky white skin are very different than my Portuguese heritage of olive skin, dark hair and brown eyes.

Once when our son was only five, he found my “color in” shampoo in my shower and used it on his light hair, to look more like me. My blonde son now had red/auburn hair. Bless his heart. Adopted by a full Italian dad and Portuguese mother, he wanted to look like mommy and daddy. Remember to gather and write down all you learn about your children’s biological family when possible from birth parents, adoption professionals, the agency, foster parents or any living relatives you meet. Consider taking photos of the hospital or orphanages or other notable locations to share with them in a genealogy book just for them. It you don’t have much, think about adding photos of the state or country they were born in and notable events that occurred the year they were born. There are many books on helping your children understand more about their culture and heritage. For waiting adoptive parents, start reading and learning before your child arrives in your home. The more you have learned and the more you see the value in this genealogy information, the more prepared you will be for the future. he Blake House mission is to provide a place of refuge for men struggling with addiction and allow Christ to regenerate them physically, spiritually, and mentally. The Blake House (TBH) is a 10-month long, Christian, in-patient, regeneration process. This process differs greatly from a conventional rehabilitation program. We believe the process of regeneration, “to restore to a better state,” is the prescription for life long freedom from addiction.

With NLB’s new vision, it was agreed upon for Jason to start his own program using the facilities that NLB West Georgia had used. On June 1, 2015 Jason launched The Blake House. He thought it fitting to celebrate Blake Chapman and his life through the name of the ministry. Blake remains a testament to God’s awesome love; that He can always bring life from death. Jason Wiley is now the Founder and Executive Director of The Blake House. God has restored everything he had and more during his time in ministry. Through his vision men are able to receive the healing they need to break the bonds of addiction. ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer is the 2nd Leading cause of death in women. It is 2nd only to Lung Cancer. It is estimated 1 in 8 women will get Breast Cancer. Survivors have many things in common and one is the ink they carry around after Cancer is gone. Breast Cancer patients receive tattoos marking placement for Radiation therapy and once treatments are completed, the tattoo remains. Though it may represent a symbol of victory for some, still many wish these tattoos to be removed from their body. Though very small, they are permanent. And, if chance of recurrence is small and the person’s doctor agrees, they may be removed in 1-3 treatments by Laser Tattoo Removal. We have come a long way since the first Lasers for tattoo removal. f you want to enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle, you don’t need to have been born rich or even to have earned scads of money during your working years. But you do need to make the right moves at the right time – which means you might want to start a “retirement countdown” well before you draw your final paycheck. What might such a countdown look like? Here are a few ideas: Ten years before retirement – At this stage of your career, you might be at, or at least near, your peak earning capacity. At the same time, your kids may have grown and left the home, and you might even have paid off your mortgage. All these factors, taken together, may mean that you can afford to “max out” on your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. And that’s exactly what you should do, if you can, because these retirement accounts offer tax benefits and the opportunity to spread your dollars around a variety of investments. Five years before retirement – Review your Social Security statement to see how much you can expect to receive each month at various ages. You can typically start collecting benefits as early as 62, but your monthly checks will be significantly larger if you wait until your “full” retirement age, which will likely be 66 (and a few months) or 67. Your payments will be bigger still if you can afford to wait until 70, at which point your benefits reach their ceiling. In any case, you’ll need to weigh several factors – your health, your family history of longevity, your other sources of retirement income – before deciding on when to start taking Social Security. One to three years before retirement – To help increase your income stream during retirement, you may want to convert some – but likely not all – of your growth-oriented investments, such as stocks and stock-based vehicles, into income-producing ones, such as bonds. Keep in mind, though, that even during your retirement years, you’ll still likely need your portfolio to provide you with some growth potential to help keep you ahead of inflation. One year before retirement – Evaluate your retirement income and expenses. It’s particularly important that you assess your health-care costs. Depending on your age at retirement, you may be eligible for Medicare, but you will likely need to pay for some supplemental coverage as well, so you will need to budget for this. Also, as you get closer to your actual retirement date, you will need to determine an appropriate withdrawal rate for your investments. How much should you take each year from your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts? The answer depends on many factors: the size of these accounts, your retirement lifestyle, your projected longevity, whether you’ve started taking Social Security, whether your spouse is still working, and so on. A financial professional can help you determine an appropriate withdrawal rate. A
djustments and major transitions can be difficult, especially if you have problems with control. If something changes and you have an issue with control you can be easily side-swiped. It is important to take it one day at a time. You can’t say you will go here or do this tomorrow for certain because you do not know what will happen. When we have to make adjustments and transitions they will go a lot smoother if we realize that we have to hold our plans loosely and be ready for change. A definition from Wikipedia.com for adjustment is regulating, adapting or settling in a variety of contexts. If you are not able to adjust easily to transitions and changes it will create disequilibrium and unbalance in your mind, body, and spirit. You will begin to feel stress in all of these areas. When an adjustment needs to be made, in the beginning you may feel some stress, but then you need to enter into the flow of the Spirit of God. That means seizing all control and outcomes of the situation and trusting that God has a plan and He will work it out for your good. It means stop trying to figure out ‘why’

and instead remaining calm and peaceful. Sometimes adjustment periods can take a while to work out. For instance if you have a step family, or your teenage daughter is pregnant and needs help, or even divorce. All are considered a crisis and all can pose a threat to our well-being. Under stress our bodies will either fight or flight, that means stay and fight or run away. Fight or flight is usually seen in stressful or threatening circumstances. There may be a time to run, but from what I know of God He does not want us to stay running He wants us to rest and then get up and fight. Taking it one day at a time is the only way to stay and fight in your situation of transition. If you decide to stay and fight you cannot project tomorrow’s fears and concerns. God gives you grace for each day, not stored up grace. So if you are living out on tomorrow’s grace, you will not survive the adjustment and transition period. With any adjustment or major transition, eventually

you will adapt and begin to learn new coping skills. It is amazing how God created us to cope and adapt in the most stressful of situations. So no matter what you are adjusting to, know that it is not permanent. Get up today, stop wallowing and having pity parties and say, “This too shall pass.” Nothing in life is ever permanent. As the seasons change, so does our lives. There is a season for everything. Though it may be painful and dark today, tomorrow is new and full of possibilities. Tips to Keep You Safe on the Road
T
he fall weather means traveling to Fall Festivals, apple harvests or driving around to see the leaves change. Before setting out on the open road, make sure you and your vehicle are ready for the journey ahead. Hankook Tire took a look at driving trends and behaviors to identify what drivers do (or forget to do) to keep safe on the road this season.
1. Keep your eyes on the road.
One of the easiest ways to avoid accidents, wrong turns or other highway mishaps is to stay focused. Cell phones are most often responsible for distracted driving, according to the latest Hankook Tire Gauge Index. One-third (33%) of Americans regularly take phone calls while on the road, and 11% admit to texting while driving. To help put this risk into perspective, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports texting while driving on the highway is equivalent to driving blindfolded for the length of an entire football field. Promising news for drivers is the Gauge also found that nearly 49% of drivers use Bluetooth, dictation or do-not-disturb features while driving to maintain better focus while on the road.
2. Take advantage of tech.
As automotive technology continues to advance, cars are constantly updated with the latest and greatest to make your time behind the wheel more comfortable, more efficient and safer. Over 34% of drivers reported their vehicles are equipped with a rear view camera, and 26% have adaptive cruise control, which automatically adjusts the vehicle’s speed to maintain a safe driving distance. While 73% of Americans find these enhanced safety features very useful, the Gauge Index found that more than 57% of drivers don’t actually use them. Regardless of the features in your car, it’s important to not let your ‘fun’ distract you from checking rear and side view mirrors, blind spots and speed.
3. Don’t tread lightly.
Before a road trip, most people fill up the tank, gather snacks and make sure the kids are set up with movies and games. What about your tires? Americans are mostly likely to check the condition of their tires if they appear to look low or uneven (65%) or if a warning light appears (49%).

Even if not prompted by a warning light or unusual sounds, always double check your tires’ air pressure and tread depth before an extended trip, as healthy tires improve gas mileage and save money at the pump. In addition to the financial benefits of healthy tires, Americans also recognize the importance of tire tread in providing safety and control, as 75% of drivers think about how effective their tire tread is when driving through heavy rain, and 61% are mindful of their tread when driving on a hairpin turn. Additionally, close to 18% of Americans believe enhanced tire grip provides more safety on tough turns than wider lanes, reduced speed limits or road sign warnings.
4. Who ya gonna call?
Even the most prepared and proactive drivers can end up on the side of the road because of unforeseen driving events. Whether it’s a flat tire, dead battery or overheated engine, 41% of Americans listed an auto club as their first phone call, followed by their significant other at 27%. Only 3% of respondents recognized their first call should be to local authorities, who can update traffic information, create a safe roadside situation and send the proper help to get you back on the road safely. Keeping You Off Your Feet

We take thousands of steps each day without giving it much thought. We take for granted our abilities to walk, run and jump. This condition involves a particular nerve, the plantar nerve, located in the bottom of your foot. The plantar nerve supplies feeling and sensation to your toes. The nerve becomes thickened and bruised due to irritation by a ligament located above it. A common cause of Morton’s Neuroma is the frequent wearing of tight shoes that squeeze the foot bones together, causing a build-up of extra tissue that pinches the nerve. This bruising may sometimes also be caused by jumping onto hard objects.

Common symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma include burning, tingling, and a slightly numb feeling in your toes, usually in-between them. Shoes, especially heels, can aggravate the pain, which may be relieved by wearing flat, wide shoes or walking barefoot.

pril Estes is a native of Paulding County and has been married to her high school sweetheart for almost 16 years. They are blessed with four beautiful children who have become the inspiration and heartbeat of her business. April graduated from Kennesaw State University in 2002 with a BBA in Finance. She spent several years in her career until the birth of her first son. Although she always had an interest in photography, this is what altered her career path. She became passionate about the opportunity to be able to preserve and capture every sweet little moment, and the emotions created by them. After the two found love in high school, they went on to explore the world separately. Lou attended Auburn and Dave made his mark at Vanderbilt and earned his Civil Engineering degree. He has since maintained a career in aviation. After graduating, Dave joined the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. While serving as a commanding officer, he earned two meritorious service awards from the President of the United States. Once he conquered flight school and his military tour concluded, Dave began his career with Eastern Airlines. Dave also served as a reservist for 24 years and was able to retire after 30 years as a Colonel. In addition, he worked as a Civil Engineer and contributed to the construction of State Route 278.
Lou initially worked for Cobb County Department of Family and Children Services before settling into Paulding County where she volunteered at the Dallas Housing Authority. Her time and efforts into the Housing Authority led to a job as a social worker with the organization where she has worked now for the past 35 years. When the Carmichael’s aren’t servicing the community, they spend their time together by biking and hiking amongst other outdoor competitive sports. Dave is a fan of hunting and fishing, and also enjoys breeding dogs. The family owns 30 acres of land in which they host weddings, and even church and family bonfires. Like most families, the Carmichael’s are big on celebrations from birthdays to graduations and, “all the blessings of life.” The Carmichael’s experiences and contributions definitely serve as a reminder as to why celebrating the bounty of your crops is just as much a part of the harvest process as the hard work. Their work parallels the Fall season, helping us learn that although the long haul can seem drawn out, there is fulfillment in patience and dedication to whatever your crop may be.

he demand for Pet Halloween costumes has escalated the last few years. You may like to have your dog with you while out trick or treating, so why not dress your buddy in a costume for Halloween and allow him to join in the fun keeping dog Halloween safety in mind, of course. With a properly trained dog, and dog-loving neighbors, it can be an enjoyable evening for the entire family. Some dogs like getting dressed up and the attention they receive but it may be tad stressful for those that are not party animals. Here are some tips to encourage your dog to become accustom to the costume idea: p Do not wait until Halloween night to put your dog’s Halloween costume on. Start a couple of weeks prior. Use treats to motivate him. p Let your best friend sniff around the costume, drape it over him for a minute, give him a treat and praise. Do this a few times. p Do the above on a daily basis, and leave the costume on longer each time. Then put the costume on him, loosely. Repeat what you have done in the instructions above. A minute or so at first and then gradually in longer increments. Accompany this with much praise and treats. p If your best buddy becomes perturbed and upset, and just doesn’t like the idea of being dressed, forget the costume. A simple doggy t-shirt, Halloween collar or bandana may be a better option.

Safety on Halloween - Inside the Home p Be careful that your pet does not run out the door while you are tending to trick or treaters. p It is a good idea to have a reflector on your dog; it may save him from being hit by a car if he gets loose. p In the event that your dog escapes, make sure he is wearing a collar and ID. p Consider keeping your dog on a leash, crated or in another room while trick or treaters are coming and going. p Candy and wrappers will be everywhere on Halloween but they must be kept away from pets. Give your dog a chew toy or a doggy treat so that he won’t feel left out. Safety on Halloween – Outside p Do not leave your dog outside on Halloween. Every Halloween pets are stolen, tormented, tortured and injured. p If you walk your dog Halloween evening, be vigilant of what he may pick up along the path. p Do have your buddy on a lead while you are trick or treating with the kids and see that he is wearing a collar and ID. p Keep your dog away from jack-o-lanterns. Place lighted candles and pumpkins where they can’t be knocked over by pets. Some of my fondest memories were the holidays and how special my mom always made them with decorations, fun festivities and interesting food preparations. I remember as a little tyke sitting on the counter and adding ingredients to the mixer as mom and I made birthday cakes from scratch for the lucky recipients. I remember standing on a chair at the stove and helping mom stir the pot of a family favorite for whatever celebration or holiday for which we were cooking.

When my first niece and mom’s namesake, Sarah Elizabeth or ‘Bett’ as we call her, was born, my mom did the same with her. Little Bett would be right along-side my mom, her Nana, and together they would prepare dishes to delight and amaze. What a cherished bond Bett and I share in getting to cook with and learn from this wonderful blessing, our mother and grandmother. I decided to share this recipe for two reasons. First, because it is Bett’s favorite dish that she and Nana prepared and was always one of my favorites. And second, because in keeping with my mom’s whimsical and clever meal ideas for special events, I believe she would approve of my choice of this bright orange main dish to fill little bellies before heading out for a merry and mischief night of trick or treating.
Bett & Aunt Minnie’s Favorite Apricot Chicken 2 ½ pounds chicken tenders 1 - 10 oz jar apricot preserves 1 - 16 oz bottle Catalina dressing 1 - packet dry onion soup mix Non-stick cooking spray
In a large bowl, mix together the preserves, dressing, and dry soup mix. Add the chicken tenders to the bowl and coat with sauce. Spray a 9x13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Pour the chicken and sauce into the prepared dish. Bake, uncovered, in a preheated, 375 degree oven for 20-30 minutes or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Remove chicken from oven and place on a serving platter. Pour the remaining sauce from the baking dish into a sauce pot and cook on medium-high until the sauce reduces by half and has thickened to a glaze. Pour the glaze over the chicken on the serving platter and enjoy! Some ideas to serve with your apricot chicken tenders to make your Halloween themed/colored meal complete: spicy, black bean salad, tater tot casserole smothered in cheddar cheese, and devil’s food cake with a rich, dark, fudgy frosting. But, when we have extraordinary people in our everyday ordinary lives that we share special time with, these days become the most important days of all.
