Meet the Little Family

Jana, Cara, Jova, Doug, Catherine, Kena, Koda, Cora and Lena

here is something ironic about the Little family; with 10 of them, they are anything but a ‘little’ family.

Catherine and Doug are parents of eight children, five girls and three boys, ranging in ages 20 years to nine months. There is never a dull moment at their home, but we are convinced that Catherine is “Super Mom.” She keeps them organized and all eight children are very caring, polite and wonderful to be around. The oldest, Brenson is 20 years old. He was born three months premature and was given only a 10% chance of survival. Then the doctors believed he would have learning problems. However, God had very different plans. Brenson graduated salutatorian last year from East Paulding High School, and is now studying Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Georgia.

Cara is 18 and will graduate this May from East Paulding High School. On March 15, 2014, the same night as her prom, her boyfriend Luke Stephenson asked for her hand in marriage – and she said, “Yes!” Catherine is very happy for her daughter, and feels they are blessed to have found each other. Cara plans on attending college after graduation and marrying in September. Lena is 17 and a junior at East Paulding High school. She is a beautiful young lady, with a big heart. Lena plays on the volleyball team at EPHS, and is a great player. Although she’s currently injured, she takes it all in stride and chooses to remain positive. Jana is 14 and in the 8th grade. Next year, she will be taking honors classes at East Paulding High School. She is a sweet girl and loves to make people happy. Koda is nine and in the 4th grade. He’s a very smart boy and is in Ventures classes at his school. Koda is a kind boy with a bright future. Cora is seven and in the 1st grade. She always has a smile on her face, and loves to brighten people’s day. She such a happy person, and just the smallest thing can make her so happy. Read more about our cover on page 39

The Amazing Healing Power of Touch

Family Law, Criminal Defense, & Mediations Flat-fees for Uncontested Divorces

By Leisa A. Bailey, Ph.D.

ome of the first psychological research I learned as a psychology student was the pioneering work from the 1970’s on attachment conducted by psychologist Harry Harlow. Dr. Harlow investigated the power of physical contact with monkeys and demonstrated that in primates…and humans, the importance of affection and physical touch is critical in the development of healthy bonding and there is a “universal need for contact.” Others have advanced Dr. Harlow’s work to demonstrate not only the importance of physical contact to develop attachment, but that touch has important healing qualities. K. Rochelle Laffitte, Esq.

8330 Office Park Drive Douglasville, GA 30134

The benefits of physical contact with another is something inherently known to everyone; and science is confirming what we knew in our heart. Touch is good! Skin is the body’s largest organ, and when its sensory receptors are stimulated, the hormone oxytocin – the one that makes you feel good – is released. At the same time, cortisol, the stress hormone, is reduced.

1 John 4:7-11

Tiffany Field, Ph.D, director of the Touch Research Institute of the University of Miami, School of Medicine has studied the benefits of touch for many years. Dr. Field has demonstrated that many forms of positive touch can help reduce pain, anxiety, depression and aggressive behavior, promote immune function and healing, lower heart rate and blood pressure, and improve air flow in asthmatics.

After two days He will revive us; On the third day He will raise us up, That we may live in His sight.

Affectionate touch is one of the most effective ways of communicating intimacy in a romantic relationship. Self-reports suggest that the amount of touching rises at the beginning of a relationship, peaks somewhere early in marriage, and then tapers off. Couples who are satisfied with each other tend to touch more. According to a recent article in the publication Psychology Today, “The true indicator of a healthy long-term relationship is not how often your partner touches you, but how often your partner touches you in response to your touch. The stronger the reciprocity, the more likely someone is to report emotional intimacy and satisfaction with the relationship. As with many things in relationships, satisfaction is as much about what we do for our partner as about what we’re getting.”

Hosea 6:2

One study from the University of North Carolina found that women who hugged their spouse or partner frequently had lower blood pressure. Another study found that men (between the ages of 40 and 70), reported that regular cuddling was more important than sex; and that the more men hugged and kissed, the happier they considered their relationships. Tactile sensation can help premature babies gain weight; accelerate recovery from illness, and calm fear. Science keeps confirming the positive effects of touch on quality of life. Psychologist, Matthew Hertenstein, PhD, director of the Touch and Emotion Lab at DePauw University asserts “you can’t touch without being touched, and a lot of those same beneficial physiological consequences happen to me, the person doing the touching.” However, touch deprivation is a real thing and living in a largely touch-deprived Western society can have negative consequences. Dr. Hertenstein suggests “most of us, whatever our relationship status, need more human contact than we’re getting.” Compared with other cultures, Americans are not as affectionate. He states “we live in a touch-phobic society that’s made affection with anyone but loved ones taboo.” In a world with real concerns about sexual harassment and abuse in schools and workplaces, touch has become villainized. Even in preschools, with those precious youngest, touch has become largely forbidden. Additionally, so much of our routine interactions are virtual – Facebook, e-mails, and texts, making physical contact rarer. Opportunities to experience physical contact with others are simply less available.

Science and common sense tells us that the more you connect with others – on even the smallest physical level – the happier you’ll be; and during times of intense grief or fear, and ecstatic moments of joy or love – touch is simply the most effective language. “Attention Sciatica And Low Back Pain Sufferers…”

Could One Hour With Our Doctors Give You The Answer To Your Disc Pain?

Now, in Acworth, GA, Dr. Erin Arnold, D.C. & Dr. Amy Valente, D.C. have what may be the most important breakthrough in non-surgical back pain treatment. Before and after MRI studies have shown disc bulges shrink in size – even with the most painful cases of L4-L5 & L5-S1 herniations. If you’ve had disc problems for years, recently injured your back, or you’re suffering with sciatica, you must hear about these new studies. Scientific studies tell us that spinal discs are responsible for most of the aches and pains people suffer from. Discs act like a cushion between our backbones and allow for a space at each level so the nerves can exit the spinal column. When these discs get injured or wear out from bad posture, they begin to degenerate and cause pain. Bulging and herniations begin to form, pressing on the nerve roots. If the herniations occur at L4-L5, they can severely compromise the large sciatic nerve, causing muscle weakness, tingling, and severe pain. The most common invasive treatment for disc herniations is surgery. This costs quite a bit of money. Even with health insurance the patient is left with their own portion of the bill, in excess of $10,000-$15,000, and sometimes more. The recovery time and missed work can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months, not to mention the obvious severe risks associated with all surgery.

p Try dangerous back surgery p Just live with it If you’re like most, none of these have worked for you or you are afraid of what could happen if you do try some of these. Exercising makes you hurt more, pain medications and muscle relaxers cover up the problem and give you side effects. Pain shots can cause more pain, don’t work or don’t last very long or FIX the problem, back surgery didn’t work, or made you worse. Or maybe you were one of the lucky ones that back surgery actually helped, but now the problem is back with a vengeance. Whatever your situation, you owe it to yourself to check into a Breakthrough Computerized Non-Surgical Treatment for back pain and sciatic or leg pain caused by a bulging, herniated or squashed disc or discs. It has helped hundreds of people who were suffering just like you. This new treatment machine we are calling “the squashed disc machine.”

But here’s the biggest problem… there is a high failure rate of back surgery. One medical study found that on average, 53% of L5-S1 back surgeries fail to produce relief of symptoms (International Orthop 1987.)

How “Good” Discs become “Bad” Discs Over time the discs in your back tend to get squashed or compressed, especially if you’ve played certain sports when younger or have a job that requires lots of sitting or standing in one place for long periods of time. Car accidents, lifting things, very physical jobs just to name a few.

Before You Go Under The Knife And Opt For Spinal Surgery… You should seriously consider a less invasive approach called spinal decompression.

It’s kind of like a cookie with cream filling, and the cream filling will start to ooze out from between the sides of the cookie if pressure is applied on top of the cookie (like gravity on our spines).

Non-surgical spinal decompression is a new technology that has been proven to reverse disc herniations. It creates a vacuum effect on the disc, which pulls the disc back into its normal position and brings in a fresh blood supply to promote healing.

Eventually this happens to a lot of us. Statistics show over 80% of Americans will suffer with back pain some time in their life.

Do You Have A Disc Problem? If you experience any of the following in your back or neck, chances are your pain is due to a disc bulge, herniation or degeneration: u A vice-like squeezing feeling in your back u Sitting causes back or leg pain uStabbing pain at the belt line or in your neck u Can’t turn over in bed without hurting u Numbness in your toes or fingers u Fire down your legs u Searing pain radiates into your arm u Prickling in your leg or toes Finally, Some Good News…… If you’ve been suffering with back pain or arm/leg pain caused by a disc bulge, disc herniation or squashed or compressed discs. Until recently, the only advice for many of you suffering in pain was to try what you’ve been told: p Try exercising p Try physical therapy p Try pain medications p Try muscle relaxers p Try pain shots

Spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, every once in a while I even catch a patient sleeping during treatment! How Does This Machine Work? Haven’t you ever had the thought…”Gosh, if somebody could just pull me apart…I would feel a whole lot better.” Yeah, we know you have. And it kind of makes a bit of sense. Well someone else, actually a medical manufacturer, back pain specialists, neurosurgeons and engineers have come up with just that. A machine that gently pulls your apart, stretches the disc to a certain point that causes a drop in pressure inside the disc (like a little vacuum in the middle of the cream filling) causing the cream filling to suck back in! You’ll simply lie on your stomach or back, whichever is comfortable, and then a specialized belt is gently put around your waist. We’ll set the machine to focus on your problem area – then the advanced decompression computer system will do the rest. Most patients feel better with just a few treatments, and best of all there will be no dangerous drugs, no invasive procedures, and no painful exercises. Does Decompression really work? Absolutely! When you come in we will provide you

with studies that show why decompression is a preferred method of treatment. But what provides the best “proof” on how well decompression works is what patients say about it. Just Listen to What Our Patients Had to Say: I started at North Cobb Spine & Nerve Institute for pain in my low back that traveled down my right leg. The pain felt like a burning sensation down my leg and numbness into my toes. I was unable to walk my normal 5 miles. Since starting the spinal decompression therapy I am now able to walk again without any pain. The pain and numbness down my right leg is completely alleviated. I was surprised to find that I am even sleeping better at night and that the tension in my upper back has also been relieved. The staff here has treated my great and is very caring! Thanks Bill Norman My initial reason for coming to North Cobb Spine & Nerve was for the need to get rid of the pain, numbness and tingling sensation in my left hip and leg. The spinal decompression treatment has greatly helped relieve that pain and numbness. I am now able to walk straight again, without pain and my posture has also improved. My family has noticed also that I am feeling better. I am now able to do things with them without dragging behind. The atmosphere and care here at North Cobb Spine & Nerve is very caring, nice and helpful. The most amazing thing about the care is how soon I noticed the difference in myself! Thank you, Deborah McGrew Before I started getting spinal decompression therapy I was having severe pain in my low back and numbness down my leg constantly. I had been suffering with this for 3 years. I had two nerve abrasions, multiple steroid shots in my back, pain killers, PT and water therapy and nothing worked. After the first spinal decompression treatment I could stand up straight with very little pain. I can now sleep through the night and exercise again. I am 90-100% better and I am so thankful I found this office. Thanks, John Ratledge

As you can see, spinal decompression has a high success rate with helping disc herniations, sciatica, and back pain. In just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again. Feel the Improvement – and Say “Yes” to Life Again With my “Decompression Evaluation” we’ll be able to find the problem and then get to work on it. Think of how you’ll feel in just a few short weeks. See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living, feel tight joints rest, relax, free up, muscles tied in knots will become more supple and strength in your muscles may increase. You’re able to live life like a normal person again, without back pain – able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends, and finally get a good night’s rest.

other’s Day might not be a happy day for all women. In fact, there may be some women who are, for whatever reason, estranged from their children or there may be children estranged from their mothers. For these people, watching happy families on Mother’s Day can be quite painful. There is no doubt that the pain that is felt through and by these broken relationships or the injustices caused one to another is real. But this Mother’s Day, begin to give yourself the gift of letting go. Let go of the pain, the anger, and the resentment, and begin to pray for forgiveness.

It is difficult to forgive someone who does not admit they are wrong or who has not asked to be forgiven. Pray that God softens your heart, and if you can pray for nothing else pray that God gives you what I call the “want tos.” “Lord help me to ‘want to’ forgive,” and try to remember when you too needed forgiveness.

This is not an easy task. Withholding anger concerning your expectations of someone turns into resentment. Holding on to resentment makes you feel justified. However, there is documentation stating that resentment and unforgiveness can make you physically sick. It could even shorten your life. Resentment can cause depression, change blood pressure, and heart rate. Resentment

Often the chance of reconciliation grows dimmer as the distance grows greater. At times it might feel like it is just easier not to try. If you are the person that needs forgiveness approach the one that you have hurt in a humble manor. Pray often to God to forgive you and to heal the relationship as you continue to try to reconcile. Also, forgive yourself. A wise friend once said

it took years for her to forgive herself for what she had done to her children. You must learn to forgive yourself as well. Forgiveness can still happen after the death of a loved one. Once again pray that God heal the relationship. Nothing is too big for God. He can heal even through death. This will allow you to let go, and in turn it will give space in your heart for other blessings.

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Eph 4:31-32

Re-Elect David Barnett Post 4 Commissioner It has been a pleasure and an honor for David Barnett to serve the people of Paulding these past three years. A wealth of knowledge and experience has been gained. His ancestors have been in Paulding since 1832 and he is sixth generation with Paulding roots, he has continued to learn even more about Paulding, its people and especially about Paulding’s government. Not only has his 23-year business, Floor Works, worked through the hardest economic time in recent history, but so has Paulding County. Hard budget decisions had to be made and Paulding County has weathered the storm very well. When David first ran for office, one of his primary goals and concerns was the water supply. Major progress has been made and the reality is getting closer. David and his wife, Debbie, just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. With their twin sons, Harrison and Parker, they are active members of West Ridge Church. Their children attend Moses Middle School and are baseball players which David coaches. David believes in Paulding for not only his family, but for the residents. Further, he believes, Paulding is a great place to work, live and worship with a shining future!

Support Your Own: Buy Locally Grown at Paulding County Farmers’ Markets

re you looking for a fun, local family outing with health and community benefits that can last beyond the scope of your trip? Look no further! Our local farmers’ markets offer you and your family the opportunity to purchase healthy fresh foods, socialize with other community members, and support our local economy. Paulding County has two farmers’ markets operating for the season. The Paulding County Farm Bureau Market has a new Market Day: The market will be open on Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of the Citizens Square shopping center, 4075 Charles Hardy Parkway, Dallas, GA 30157. The Paulding County Farm Bureau Markets runs from 3 to 7 p.m.

meal for their family that will be healthy and delicious, while supporting local agriculture.

Come meet the folks who grow their own and whose produce has traveled less than 100 miles from farm to market. The vendors who sell at the farmers’ markets are knowledgeable, local growers who are bringing their products direct to you in friendly and fun, open-air markets. The markets are not just a place to buy wonderful edibles, but a place to connect with your community.

The market vendors sell a wide variety of in season produce. Right now, you’ll find greens, onions, radishes, broccoli, lettuces, Swiss chard, strawberries and many early spring vegetables. As the season gets warmer and summer vegetables begin to come in, you’ll find items such as sweet corn, many types of beans and peas, tomatoes, eggplant, peaches and berries. If it is in season, the growers will be there with it fresh from the field!

At the market, customers interact with local farmers to learn more about specific foods, including how they are grown and harvested, how they should be cleaned and stored, and even suggestions on how to prepare them. This allows the customers to experience many new items with confidence that they can take the vegetables home and prepare a

Downtown Dallas will also play host to a weekly market in the parking lot of the Historic Paulding County Courthouse. Market patrons can shop for local produce and walk around the corner to shop the local down-

Beyond just fresh produce, vendors also offer fresh eggs, fresh ground whole wheat and artisan breads, goat cheese, local honey products, jams/jellies, pickles, relishes, herbs, fresh-cut flowers, peanut brittle, fudge and much more. Many of the products are produced without artificial fertilizers and pesticides, and the growers are there to answer any questions you may have about these fabulous farm-fresh products. Improving your Heart Health with Chocolate, Wine & Aspirin

By Mindy Gentry, M.D.

ou’ve probably heard that taking a baby aspirin or drinking a glass of wine can be good for your cardiovascular health - and it’s true! For most people chocolate, wine, and aspirin can offer protective benefits for the heart.

ASPIRIN Aspirin comes from the bark of the willow tree. Its use dates back to 3000 B.C., and it has been used regularly throughout history for a variety of ailments. In recent years, it has been used primarily as an anti-pain and anti-fever medication. Bayer, a German Company, named the drug aspirin in the late 1800’s. They were eventually forced to give up the trademark as a part of the treaty of Versailles in 1919, and shortly after, aspirin became available without a prescription. Aspirin interferes with production of prostaglandin which reduces pain and inflammation and essentially makes your platelets less “sticky.” Studies have shown that aspirin may reduce the risk of heart attack by 44%, but in women a greater reduction was shown in the risk of stroke. Physicians recommend taking aspirin if you’ve had a previous heart attack or stroke, but if you have not had a cardiac event and have several risk factors for heart disease, your doctor may recommend you begin an aspirin regimen as a preventative measure.

WINE Wine is the oldest documented man-made medicine. Greek and Roman physicians used it regularly to treat a variety of ailments, including dementia and even sinus problems! In the late 19th and 20th century, however, the dangers of alcohol were brought to light. Alcoholism and fetal alcohol syndrome were recognized, and public opinion turned against alcohol consumption in general which lead to prohibition. We since have learned that alcohol in moderation can actually be quite good for your health. Similar to aspirin, alcohol decreases clot formation and makes platelets less sticky. Polyphenols such as reveratrol and flavonoids help prevent LDL or “bad” cholesterol from becoming oxidized so it’s less likely to become glued to arteries. Alcohol in moderation can increase HDL or “good” cholesterol about 12%- similar to exercise! Studies have shown that while any alcohol is beneficial, red wine is probably more so. Likely because red wine is fermented with grape skin, which leads to higher levels of polyphenols. Alcohol intake must be moderate, as excessive intake has been found to be harmful.

So what do these three things have in common? Chocolate, wine and aspirin all decrease blood clot formation, and have antioxidant properties that protect your heart health. Again, moderation is the key to keeping the benefit of incorporating these into your lifestyle outweigh the harm.

Just like wine, chocolate contains flavanoids and antioxidants that scavenge free radicals and keep hearts healthy. It comes from the Cacao tree and the Maya Indians were the first known people to have consumed it in 250-900 A.D. For years, cacao seeds were ground into a bitter spicy drink that was used as a health elixir. Later the drink was sweetened and became more of a treat for elite society. The first chocolate bar was produced in the 1800s and quickly spread to the mass production we know today. So how can chocolate be a health food? It helps inhibit platelet clumping, and reduces inflammation. Half of a square of chocolate inhibits platelets as much as an 81 mg aspirin! Dark chocolate is best due to the higher cocoa content. Studies have shown that light chocolate consumption resulted in a drop in blood pressure, a lower risk of heart attack and stroke, and a lower risk of heart failure. The recommended amount is unclear due to the varying studies and brands of chocolate, but about 6-7 grams a day (or a square of a chocolate bar) is about right.

fitness Entropy, the Gym, and You Contributed by Cornerstone Chiropractic

et’s say you’ve been taking some time off from the gym. Maybe you reached the end of your 12-week training cycle and you’re taking a week off. It’s possible that one week turns into two or even three or four weeks. Life happens, you need to attend to some pressing matters, and going to the gym starts to take a back seat. Before you know it, two or three months have passed by. Suddenly, you’re no longer a person who goes to the gym, but a person who needs to figure out a way to get back to the gym on a regular basis. “What happened to me?” you wonder. “Where did the time go?” Now you have to actually exert effort to fit “workout time” into your schedule. You scratch your head and ponder. “I thought I had this all covered,” you think, not for the first time. What happened to you and your well-made plans was entropy, that insidious force in the universe that turns order into disorder. The basic rule is that any organized system, left unattended, will immediately begin to break down. As a mundane example, those piles of papers on your desk keep reaccumulating as a result of entropy. The weeds in your garden? Entropy. The dust bunnies in your attic and basement? Entropy. The collapse of your plan for doing regular workouts? Entropy. What’s worse, entropy takes a serious toll on your physical fitness.1,2 If you miss enough time from the gym, all your fitness gains begin to melt away. First, your muscles begin to lose their stores of energy. Glycogen, the complex sugar that supplies energy for muscle work, is broken down for use elsewhere. Arterioles and capillaries, small blood vessels that were needed to supply nutrients to your growing muscles, are no longer required and rapidly disappear. Muscle fibers that were continually added to support your exercise activities are cannibalized, so that their constituent parts may be used for other physiological processes. Entropy launches a process of randomization that breaks down your carefully built-up muscular structure. Your body, being very smart, metaphorically swoops in and moves all those metabolic components to other structures and systems for more efficient use. The superficial result is loss of muscle definition. The deeper result is loss of muscle tone.3 Your cardiorespiratory system (heart and lungs), digestive system, and metabolism are all affected, as these physiologic systems are no longer required to be functioning at peak to support a regular vigorous exercise program. Entropy sets in to all these systems, as well. The overall result is a profound impact on your health and well-being.

The good news is we can help keep entropy at bay, but doing so requires attention and determination. We want to attend to our bodies as carefully and regularly as we attend to the environment of our home, office, and garden. Just as our cars, motorcycles, and bicycles require periodic maintenance, our bodies require much more frequent care, care on a daily and weekly basis. It’s fine to occasionally skip a week or two, or even a month if needed, of exercise but we must make sure we get right back on schedule to ensure benefits to our short-term and long-term health.

home & design Things to Look For Before Buying Antique Porcelain By Matt Tudge   ntique porcelain collectors the world over are perennially at a loss of what to do when it comes to effectively distinguish the “real stuff ” from the fake ones. This can largely be attributed to the profusion of these commodities in the market. Especially online where innumerable fraudulent dealers are always on the lookout to make a quick buck off many unsuspecting collectors. By strictly adhering to the following tips, you too can add genuine antique porcelain into your collection, whether you’re a seasoned collector or a budding one.

Distinguishing Between Authentic Hard Paste Antique Porcelain and Fake Ones

For those who might not be in the know, there are several excellent ways to accurately ascertain whether the hard paste porcelain you are trying to buy is really genuine. One of the most satisfactory analyses you can put such products through is checking their translucency. This simply means physically determining whether light can pass through its body. Before doing this examination you should ensure that there is sufficient lighting. Real antique porcelain allows light to effortlessly pass through it. You can also try to tap such a product, and if it emits a resonant sound you know it’s the real deal. Further, hard paste porcelain products don’t show glaze crazing. Should the specimen you are examining be in any way damaged, its chips should appear “shelllike” and the interior of its body closely resembling the shine of glass.

Distinguishing Between Authentic SOFT Paste Antique Porcelain and Fake Ones Like hard paste porcelain, these types of antique porcelain also possess translucent characteristics, but unlike the former its interior (particularly if damaged) manifest granular appearance. Additionally, in stark contrast to hard paste porcelain, this variety is less resilient due to the manufacturing process it is passed through. Its glaze can therefore be susceptible to accrue scratches relatively easily.

One of the major challenges when it comes to verifying the authenticity of these products is that a large portion of their manufacturers (particularly in the 18th and 19th century) never made any distinguishing marks to catalogue them. Most of them opted to utilize pattern numbers to help them identify their wares. It is thus extremely prudent to be very conversant with the diverse styles of the main porcelain factories of that period to ensure you aren’t hoodwinked. For instance, during this time the manufacturing trends were forever changing, and by examining certain features of antique porcelain you can effectively determine their authenticity.

home improvement Mowers, Chain Saws and High-ethanol Gas: Safety Tips for Consumers

ith warm weather on the way, many Americans will be heading outdoors. Whether you’re beautifying your landscape with a lawn mower and hedge trimmer or using a chain saw to clear space for that deck you’ve always dreamed of, it’s important to take proper care when using outdoor power equipment. Safety measures help protect both the equipment and the people using it.

Specializing in Roof & Gutter Replacement

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) offers homeowners some tips as they use outdoor equipment this summer: The Finer Points of Fueling Know your equipment by reading and understanding the owner’s manual. Fuel keeps your outdoor power equipment going, so it’s important to use it properly and safely. Before starting any equipment this spring, be sure to drain old fuel from the tank – especially if it’s been sitting all winter. Untreated gasoline left sitting in a tank for more than 30 days can deteriorate and destabilize, causing problems starting or running equipment. In some cases, bad gas can even damage the fuel system. After you’re done using the equipment, switch the fuel valve off and leave it that way until it’s time to use the equipment again. Fill a lawn mower’s tank between uses to minimize the amount of air in the tank. Store gasoline in a clean, sealed plastic container that’s specifically intended and designed for fuel storage, and store it away from direct sunlight. When it’s time to refuel your equipment, be aware of the type of gasoline it needs and look before you pump. Don’t assume that the gas you put in your car can still go in your mower, chain saw or generator. Never use greater-than-10 percent ethanol gasoline blends, which are now commonly available at gas stations throughout the country and may be lower in price than other blends. It is illegal to use higher-ethanol gasoline blends in small engines such as your lawn mower, leaf blower or trimmer. What’s more, such fuels can be harmful and cause damage to small engines.

5 Star Quality & Service Since 1993

Be aware of what blender pumps look like. These pumps dispense higher ethanol fuels such as E15, E30 and E85 blends. Know when it’s appropriate to use them and when it’s not. To learn more about proper fuel use in smaller engines, visit OPEI’s educational site General Safety Measures n When operating a lawn mower, start with basic safety concerns such as wearing the proper attire, including substantial shoes (no sandals or flip-flops), long pants and snug-fitting clothes. Inspect the mower for loose belts or hoses before you start it. Be sure no one else is nearby as you prepare to start the mower, especially children and pets. If you have a riding mower, start it while sitting in the driver’s seat, never while standing beside the mower. Always slow down when operating any mower on a slope or difficult curve.

n When operating a chain saw, wear protective gear such as safety footwear, gloves, chaps, safety goggles and hearing protection. Never carry a running chain saw when it isn’t being used, and be sure your work area is clear. Keep other people out of your work area. If you’re cutting down a tree, plan a retreat route for when the tree falls. Be aware of “kickback,” which can happen when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood you’re cutting pinches the saw chain in the cut. These scenarios could result in the guide bar kicking back toward the user.

n As you use an edger or trimmer, take safety measures such as wearing protective gear and ensuring that your work area is clear of any stones or debris that could fly up. Stop the motor when moving from location to location with your trimmer, and never put your hands or feet near the cutting area. For Advertising information Call 770.222.2699 • Our Town

By Pam Walker

have been to Kenya several times. I even honeymooned there so far back I don’t want to say. However it has been a good 10 years since I visited the last time, mainly because I found the Safari operators in Kenya had lost their way and started making a Disney attraction out of what was a spectacular country. Since then, I had been looking for Karen Blixen’s proverbial Out of Africa experience. I did Safaris in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. I tried to track the great gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda several times, but was challenged by terrorists each time. Consequently, that is still on my “bucket list”. Invited to see the new Kenya on invitation from the Kicheche camps of several new Conservancy groups, I jumped at the chance. I had heard about these private groups purchasing large swaths of land throughout Kenya to preserve the animals and to preserve the country. Just before the rainy season, I left the US to see what had been accomplished. On the first day alone, in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy at the base of Mt. Kenya, I saw most of the Big Five! Elephants,

lions, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros all roamed freely across this giant fenced wilderness. That very night two cheetahs lay sleepily in the grass not far from the tented camp that Kicheche had provided. Now when I say tented, this was not like your average tent in the woods. These tented camps have proper bathrooms with running water. You can even get a shower every night...not a long one...but long enough even to wash your hair if you need to. Don’t look for the hair dryer, however, as these camps don’t have an electric current. They are solar powered and that lasts just so long in the cool dark evenings. So what could be better than sitting by the fire, hearing the lions roar in the distance and then sitting down to a gourmet feast in the main tent, complete with candle light and full service wait staff to attend with French service. No buffets here....only the best will do. At 5:30am (dawn), one of these same waiters brings you

coffee or tea and cookies to your tent door, to wake you up so you can prepare to go on your first game drive. What a great way to get a wakeup call! We are out at 6am and back around 9am filled with stories about who saw what. Best of all, within the conservancies, it is illegal to have more than two safari vehicles together at any one time! Gone were my memories of the old Kenya where when someone spotted a pride of lions within 5 minutes, there were 25 other vehicles surrounding them with tourists from around the World uttering adoring words loudly and clicking a myriad of camera shutters. None of that in the new Kenyan conservancies. There are now six conservancies covering thousands of acres all over Kenya. Best of all, these conservancies are giving jobs to locals and educating them about the preservation of the earth and its animals. No more plastic bags floating across the Mara. The people now pick up what waste and trash they see and stow it properly. People from the US are afraid to travel to Kenya after hearing about terrorists and mall bombings....but the Conservancies of Kenya couldn’t be more peaceful and wonderful. Thank you Kicheche glad you are educating us all! Pam Walker is a Virtuoso Travel Advisor and can be reached at

family focus Picking the Right Camp for Your Kids

s the classic Gershwin song lyrics go, “summertime and the livin’ is easy” isn’t always the case if you’re a parent trying to determine what to do with your kids when the final school bell rings. More than 10 million kids from coast to coast attend some type of summer camp intended to occupy their days and provide memorable experiences full of fun, learning and development.

While selecting the right camp can be a daunting task for parents, Life Time - The Healthy Way of Life Company, which welcomes more than 65,000 kids to its camps across the country, has some key suggestions to ensure a positive summer for everyone. “Safety, fun, health and variety are priorities for us and we’ve learned what it takes to create the best camp experience for kids and their parents,” says Jennifer Veres, national senior program manager for kids’ activities. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you look at camps:

l Safety. Ask questions

in advance to ensure the camp has standard operating procedures in place to keep your kids safe. Are parents required to show their membership card or driver’s license to both check in and take their children home? Every employee should also have a state-approved background check and those working with kids should be CPR- and first aid-certified. Parents should also know the counselor to child ratio. Some day camp programs allow for a 1:20 ratio, although a lower ratio of, 1:10 is better. These higher standards help ensure the safety and engagement of the children.

l Activities. Find a camp that excites kids, provides a routine and has a variety of

healthy activities for kids to engage in. This is critical for parents who don’t want their kids wasting away summer days playing video games for hours on end. Good information to learn includes what the balance is between a set daily routine and the type, level and variety of activities the camp has designed to keep kids interested.

the overall importance of real food in daily diets, consider the food and snacks provided at camp. Find out if the daily menu includes healthy options free of artificial colors, preservatives and sweeteners, as well as being free of trans fats and bleached flour. For those children with food allergies, parents will want to ensure the camp has guidelines for their child.

l Does the schedule work? While kids may have all the time in the world during the

l Counselors. It’s important to have counselors who will keep kids engaged in healthy, active fun, and are committed to building relationships with kids throughout the summer and not just looking for a summer job. They should have previous experience with kids and/or experience in childhood education or other kid-focused programs.

summer, most parents still have set schedules. Ensure that the camp times from start to finish work for everyone. Many camps have forced times for drop-off and pick-up, creating extra challenges. However, some have extended hours to accommodate parents’ busy schedules, and kids have the ability to participate in their swimming lessons during their camp day, creating one less thing to do and/or place to go. Keeping these things in mind when choosing your child’s camp will help both you and your child feel confident about their summer camp experience.

With both having backgrounds in photography, it was a natural fit when the two met while shooting for a local portrait studio in Marietta. As the two grew to be more than friends, they began shooting together outside of their place of employment and quickly became an inseparable team. Nathan’s eye for detail and technical knowledge combined with Melissa’s creative flair and robust marketing skills allowed them to produce exquisite high fashion portrait sessions for their clients. With a true passion for photography and the desire to offer that high-end experience to all of their customers, they decided Capturing Forever would be the premiere, metro-Atlanta studio within the niches they love most - boutique newborn photography and high fashion, high school senior casuals. By giving their clients a relaxed, enjoyable and unforgettable experience, Capturing Forever transcends the stiffness of traditional portrait photography and maintains the integrity of their motto “We capture the moments you cherish forever.” Nathan and Melissa also feel everyone deserves pictures that can truly be considered works of art, so they offer sessions and packages designed around all budgets. The Capturing Forever studio is located in their Dallas home and they are available for studio, location, and event work. Nathan and Melissa have two children, Daniel 6 and Emily 4, with another little one due later this year. They attend West Ridge church and are constantly looking for ways to incorporate photography into ministry and show God’s love through their work. To book your session, you can contact them at 404-405-1617, through email at info@, or visit their website

more about the cover

Continued from Pg. 5

Jova is two and all boy! He is a wonderful hand-full who keeps you on your feet, and is way too smart for his age. He’s a very loving little boy, but can also be just as “ornery.” Kena is nine months old and has been quite a blessing. She had to have two fetal blood exchanges while in the womb and then had to be born six weeks early. Once she was born she had to get another blood exchange. Catherine is very happy to say that Kena is a healthy beautiful baby girl. She is a very happy baby, and loves to smile.  Catherine and Doug have lived in Paulding since 2005. She is a stay home mom and he works for Proline Medical.

Being a mother, especially with eight, has its rewards and challenges. Catherine says, “The most rewarding thing about being a mom is watching the younger children learn and grow; and when they ask for something as small as tucking them in. It is rewarding watching the older children turn into great young adults who know right from wrong, and have God in their hearts.” She adds, “The most challenging thing about being a mom of eight is finding the time to do things with the children, but also finding the time to do the things that have to be done.” When asked about her secret to staying organized, Catherine says, “[We try] to have a reasonable routine that we can stick with. I get the 7 and 9 years clothes out for the whole school week. I usually clean on the same day each week and do laundry every day while kids are at school so it does not get backed up. The older kids each have a chore after dinner. One does the dishes, one cleans the table, and another cleans the floor. This helps us but also teaches them responsibility for the future.” The Little’s are a very tight family and do everything together; going to church, vacations, camping, watch movies, etc. Catherine says, “As a family, we have gone through many trials together, but God has always been so good to us and pulled us through.” On Mother’s Day they go to church together and sometimes out for dinner. Catherine says, “Although Mother’s Day is special, she feels loved and blessed every day that she gets to be a mom to her children.” It was such a blessing to meet and have this precious family on our cover. Happy Mother’s Day!

GRACIE ELLA (DOB ~02/10/2005) is a beautiful purebred female Calico Persian who was released to us

when her family had to move to California and couldn’t take GRACIE with them. GRACIE is really sweet, a bit apprehensive, and likes to be petted every chance she gets once she warms up to you. GRACIE is not a very active senior, sleeping most of the day. She likes Fancy Feast Fish and Shrimp (flaked) for breakfast and dinner - and won’t eat much else other than dry Royal Canin for Persians and Innova. GRACIE doesn’t talk much but purrs a lot, and she would probably do best in a home where she is the only cat, and doesn’t have to compete with either a dog or a child for affection from her new family members. GRACIE is spayed, up-to-date with vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, has received flea preventative, and is eligible to receive at least 30 days of prepaid pet health insurance. GRACIE’s adoption fee is our senior fee of $100.00.

Tips for Springtime Traveling with your Cat

ometimes, you will find it necessary to travel somewhere with your cat in tow. Doing so is not always easy. Here are a few tips for springtime traveling with your cat.

l Many people who travel with their cats do so by car. On the road, you want to avoid allowing your cat to roam around the car freely. You never know what could happen. She may interfere with your operation of the pedals or otherwise distract you. Not to mention the fact that your cat could get severely injured upon flying around in the event you get in an accident. l It is best that you keep your cat inside of an appropriate carrier while you are traveling by car. The carrier should not be placed in the front seat for safety reasons. Your passenger side airbag will generate enough force to crush the carrier and cat if it deploys. l Some cats get sick easily when traveling in a car. If yours does, you may want to avoid feeding too much while on the road. It may be a good idea to give your kitty a few treats though, especially if she is acting upset. Water should also be available for your cat.

l Cats with a pre-existing medical condition will have an increased risk of suffering problems when flying. No matter how you are traveling though, you will need to bring along all medications that your cat needs. You do not want to take a chance that your destination will not have the medications available for you.

l If you intend to keep your cat with you, make sure that your particular carrier is small enough to fit under the seat. Also, traveling in the luggage area is no picnic, and it may be hard on your cat’s health. With this in mind, you may want to get your cat checked out by the vet to ensure that it is safe to travel.

$12 Doggie Daycare

l Traveling with your cat by plane is also another option. Make sure you check with the airline to see if it will be an issue. Some airlines allow you to take one pet in the cabin, while others require you to check them into the luggage area.

l If your cat has a special type of food that she eats, then you will need to bring her food along with you too. You might find that you have a hard time finding the special food wherever you are traveling with your cat.

Place bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Combine corn, red bell pepper, half-and-half, butter, sugar, salt, black pepper, and half the crumbled bacon in the slow cooker; stir well. Cook on High for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Stir cream cheese into corn mixture; cook until cheese melts, about 10 more minutes. Stir well and top with remaining bacon before serving.

Ginger-Orange Cheesecake

(Makes 10 Servings) Nonstick cooking spray 12 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese (Neufchatel), softened ½ cup sugar 1 teaspoon finely shredded orange peel (set aside) 2 tablespoons orange juice 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon vanilla ½ cup nonfat sour cream ¾ cup refrigerated or frozen egg product, thawed, or 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup warm water 2 medium Cara Cara and/or blood oranges, sliced Finely chopped crystalized ginger (optional) Lightly coat a 1 1/2-quart souffle dish or casserole* with cooking spray. Tear off an 18x12-inch piece of heavy foil; cut in half lengthwise. Fold each piece lengthwise into thirds. Crisscross the foil strips and place the dish in the center of the crisscross; set aside. For filling, in a large bowl beat cream cheese, sugar, orange juice, flour, and vanilla with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined. Beat in sour cream until smooth. Beat in eggs with mixer on low speed just until combined. Stir in orange peel. Pour filling into prepared dish. Cover dish tightly with foil. Pour warm water into a 3 1/2- to 5-quart slow cooker. Using the ends of the foil strips, transfer dish to cooker. Leave foil strips under dish. Cover and cook on high-heat setting for 2 1/2 hours or until center is set. Using foil strips carefully remove dish from cooker; discard foil strips. Cool completely, uncovered, on a wire rack. Cover and chill for 4 to 24 hours before serving. Garnish with orange slices and crystallized ginger if using.
