here is something ironic about the Little family; with 10 of them, they are anything but a ‘little’ family.
Catherine and Doug are parents of eight children, five girls and three boys, ranging in ages 20 years to nine months. There is never a dull moment at their home, but we are convinced that Catherine is “Super Mom.” She keeps them organized and all eight children are very caring, polite and wonderful to be around. The oldest, Brenson is 20 years old. He was born three months premature and was given only a 10% chance of survival. Then the doctors believed he would have learning problems. However, God had very different plans. Brenson graduated salutatorian last year from East Paulding High School, and is now studying Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Georgia.

Cara is 18 and will graduate this May from East Paulding High School. On March 15, 2014, the same night as her prom, her boyfriend Luke Stephenson asked for her hand in marriage – and she said, “Yes!” Catherine is very happy for her daughter, and feels they are blessed to have found each other. Cara plans on attending college after graduation and marrying in September. Lena is 17 and a junior at East Paulding High school. She is a beautiful young lady, with a big heart. Lena plays on the volleyball team at EPHS, and is a great player. Although she’s currently injured, she takes it all in stride and chooses to remain positive. Jana is 14 and in the 8th grade. Next year, she will be taking honors classes at East Paulding High School. She is a sweet girl and loves to make people happy. Koda is nine and in the 4th grade. He’s a very smart boy and is in Ventures classes at his school. Koda is a kind boy with a bright future. Cora is seven and in the 1st grade. She always has a smile on her face, and loves to brighten people’s day. She such a happy person, and just the smallest thing can make her so happy. Read more about our cover on page 39

The Family Alliance of Paulding, Inc. 8th Annual March against Meth May 9, 2014
T
he Family Alliance of Paulding, Inc. is hosting the 8th Annual March against Meth on Friday, May 9th 2014. The event is a 5K timed run and family fun run/walk. There will be plenty of food, bounce house, kids’ activities, entertainment, drug prevention education and a raffle. Folks can pre-register at www.active.com or on the Family Alliance website, www.familyallianceofpaulding. org. Sponsors, vendors and raffle items are still welcome. The Family Alliance of Paulding is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to strengthen men, women and families of all backgrounds and life circumstances by providing parenting and substance abuse education; building positive, rewarding and satisfying relationships between parents and their children, and offering development and service opportunities for all citizens.
Executive Director of the alliance educates our students in our school system, does trainings for our law enforcement, administrators and our community at large. The Meth Alliance expanded into the Family Alliance in 2009 in order to encompass other needs within our community. They currently run the Supervised Visitation Family Time program for our local DFCS as well as supervising visits for other counties in Georgia. They also offer parenting classes, court mandated programs and are working on expanding to include life skills and mentoring programs. In April 2010, The Family Alliance of Paulding was awarded a grant by the SafeHouse Outreach Learning Project to coach and expand its Board of Directors and volunteer activities, but to do so, THEY NEED YOU! ome of the first psychological research I learned as a psychology student was the pioneering work from the 1970’s on attachment conducted by psychologist Harry Harlow. Dr. Harlow investigated the power of physical contact with monkeys and demonstrated that in primates…and humans, the importance of affection and physical touch is critical in the development of healthy bonding and there is a “universal need for contact.” Others have advanced Dr. Harlow’s work to demonstrate not only the importance of physical contact to develop attachment, but that touch has important healing qualities.

Tiffany Field, Ph.D, director of the Touch Research Institute of the University of Miami, School of Medicine has studied the benefits of touch for many years. Dr. Field has demonstrated that many forms of positive touch can help reduce pain, anxiety, depression and aggressive behavior, promote immune function and healing, lower heart rate and blood pressure, and improve air flow in asthmatics.

Affectionate touch is one of the most effective ways of communicating intimacy in a romantic relationship. Self-reports suggest that the amount of touching rises at the beginning of a relationship, peaks somewhere early in marriage, and then tapers off. Couples who are satisfied with each other tend to touch more. According to a recent article in the publication Psychology Today, “The true indicator of a healthy long-term relationship is not how often your partner touches you, but how often your partner touches you in response to your touch. The stronger the reciprocity, the more likely someone is to report emotional intimacy and satisfaction with the relationship. As with many things in relationships, satisfaction is as much about what we do for our partner as about what we’re getting.”

One study from the University of North Carolina found that women who hugged their spouse or partner frequently had lower blood pressure. Another study found that men (between the ages of 40 and 70), reported that regular cuddling was more important than sex; and that the more men hugged and kissed, the happier they considered their relationships. Tactile sensation can help premature babies gain weight; accelerate recovery from illness, and calm fear. Science keeps confirming the positive effects of touch on quality of life. Psychologist, Matthew Hertenstein, PhD, director of the Touch and Emotion Lab at DePauw University asserts “you can’t touch without being touched, and a lot of those same beneficial physiological consequences happen to me, the person doing the touching.” However, touch deprivation is a real thing and living in a largely touch-deprived Western society can have negative consequences. Dr. Hertenstein suggests “most of us, whatever our relationship status, need more human contact than we’re getting.” Compared with other cultures, Americans are not as affectionate. He states “we live in a touch-phobic society that’s made affection with anyone but loved ones taboo.” In a world with real concerns about sexual harassment and abuse in schools and workplaces, touch has become villainized. Even in preschools, with those precious youngest, touch has become largely forbidden. Additionally, so much of our routine interactions are virtual – Facebook, e-mails, and texts, making physical contact rarer. Opportunities to experience physical contact with others are simply less available.

Mother’s Day Letting Go

releases stress hormones and maintaining that resentment can cause permanent physiological damage. In short, holding on to resentment causes more damage to you than the person you are angry at.
other’s Day might not be a happy day for all women. In fact, there may be some women who are, for whatever reason, estranged from their children or there may be children estranged from their mothers. For these people, watching happy families on Mother’s Day can be quite painful. There is no doubt that the pain that is felt through and by these broken relationships or the injustices caused one to another is real. But this Mother’s Day, begin to give yourself the gift of letting go. Let go of the pain, the anger, and the resentment, and begin to pray for forgiveness.
It is difficult to forgive someone who does not admit they are wrong or who has not asked to be forgiven. Pray that God softens your heart, and if you can pray for nothing else pray that God gives you what I call the “want tos.” “Lord help me to ‘want to’ forgive,” and try to remember when you too needed forgiveness.
This is not an easy task. Withholding anger concerning your expectations of someone turns into resentment. Holding on to resentment makes you feel justified. However, there is documentation stating that resentment and unforgiveness can make you physically sick. It could even shorten your life. Resentment can cause depression, change blood pressure, and heart rate. Resentment
Often the chance of reconciliation grows dimmer as the distance grows greater. At times it might feel like it is just easier not to try. If you are the person that needs forgiveness approach the one that you have hurt in a humble manor. Pray often to God to forgive you and to heal the relationship as you continue to try to reconcile. Also, forgive yourself. A wise friend once said
it took years for her to forgive herself for what she had done to her children. You must learn to forgive yourself as well. Forgiveness can still happen after the death of a loved one. Once again pray that God heal the relationship. Nothing is too big for God. He can heal even through death. This will allow you to let go, and in turn it will give space in your heart for other blessings.
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Eph 4:31-32

Major progress has been made and the reality is getting closer. David and his wife, Debbie, just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. With their twin sons, Harrison and Parker, they are active members of West Ridge Church. Their children attend Moses Middle School and are baseball players which David coaches. David believes in Paulding for not only his family, but for the residents. Further, he believes, Paulding is a great place to work, live and worship with a shining future!

ou’ve probably heard that taking a baby aspirin or drinking a glass of wine can be good for your cardiovascular health - and it’s true! For most people chocolate, wine, and aspirin can offer protective benefits for the heart.
ASPIRIN Aspirin comes from the bark of the willow tree. Its use dates back to 3000 B.C., and it has been used regularly throughout history for a variety of ailments. In recent years, it has been used primarily as an anti-pain and anti-fever medication. Bayer, a German Company, named the drug aspirin in the late 1800’s. They were eventually forced to give up the trademark as a part of the treaty of Versailles in 1919, and shortly after, aspirin became available without a prescription. Aspirin interferes with production of prostaglandin which reduces pain and inflammation and essentially makes your platelets less “sticky.” Studies have shown that aspirin may reduce the risk of heart attack by 44%, but in women a greater reduction was shown in the risk of stroke. Physicians recommend taking aspirin if you’ve had a previous heart attack or stroke, but if you have not had a cardiac event and have several risk factors for heart disease, your doctor may recommend you begin an aspirin regimen as a preventative measure.

WINE Wine is the oldest documented man-made medicine. Greek and Roman physicians used it regularly to treat a variety of ailments, including dementia and even sinus problems! In the late 19th and 20th century, however, the dangers of alcohol were brought to light. Just like wine, chocolate contains flavanoids and antioxidants that scavenge free radicals and keep hearts healthy. It comes from the Cacao tree and the Maya Indians were the first known people to have consumed it in 250-900 A.D. For years, cacao seeds were ground into a bitter spicy drink that was used as a health elixir. Later the drink was sweetened and became more of a treat for elite society. The first chocolate bar was produced in the 1800s and quickly spread to the mass production we know today. So how can chocolate be a health food? et’s say you’ve been taking some time off from the gym. Maybe you reached the end of your 12-week training cycle and you’re taking a week off. It’s possible that one week turns into two or even three or four weeks. Life happens, you need to attend to some pressing matters, and going to the gym starts to take a back seat. Before you know it, two or three months have passed by. Suddenly, you’re no longer a person who goes to the gym, but a person who needs to figure out a way to get back to the gym on a regular basis. “What happened to me?” you wonder. “Where did the time go?” Now you have to actually exert effort to fit “workout time” into your schedule. You scratch your head and ponder. “I thought I had this all covered,” you think, not for the first time. What happened to you and your well-made plans was entropy, that insidious force in the universe that turns order into disorder. The basic rule is that any organized system, left unattended, will immediately begin to break down. As a mundane example, those piles of papers on your desk keep reaccumulating as a result of entropy. The weeds in your garden? Entropy. The dust bunnies in your attic and basement? Entropy. The collapse of your plan for doing regular workouts? Entropy. What’s worse, entropy takes a serious toll on your physical fitness.1,2 If you miss enough time from the gym, all your fitness gains begin to melt away. First, your muscles begin to lose their stores of energy. Glycogen, the complex sugar that supplies energy for muscle work, is broken down for use elsewhere. Arterioles and capillaries, small blood vessels that were needed to supply nutrients to your growing muscles, are no longer required and rapidly disappear. Muscle fibers that were continually added to support your exercise activities are cannibalized, so that their constituent parts may be used for other physiological processes. Entropy launches a process of randomization that breaks down your carefully built-up muscular structure. Your body, being very smart, metaphorically swoops in and moves all those metabolic components to other structures and systems for more efficient use. The superficial result is loss of muscle definition. The deeper result is loss of muscle tone.3 Your cardiorespiratory system (heart and lungs), digestive system, and metabolism are all affected, as these physiologic systems are no longer required to be functioning at peak to support a regular vigorous exercise program. ith warm weather on the way, many Americans will be heading outdoors. Whether you’re beautifying your landscape with a lawn mower and hedge trimmer or using a chain saw to clear space for that deck you’ve always dreamed of, it’s important to take proper care when using outdoor power equipment. Safety measures help protect both the equipment and the people using it.

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) offers homeowners some tips as they use outdoor equipment this summer: The Finer Points of Fueling Know your equipment by reading and understanding the owner’s manual. Fuel keeps your outdoor power equipment going, so it’s important to use it properly and safely. Before starting any equipment this spring, be sure to drain old fuel from the tank – especially if it’s been sitting all winter. Untreated gasoline left sitting in a tank for more than 30 days can deteriorate and destabilize, causing problems starting or running equipment. In some cases, bad gas can even damage the fuel system. After you’re done using the equipment, switch the fuel valve off and leave it that way until it’s time to use the equipment again. Fill a lawn mower’s tank between uses to minimize the amount of air in the tank. Store gasoline in a clean, sealed plastic container that’s specifically intended and designed for fuel storage, and store it away from direct sunlight. When it’s time to refuel your equipment, be aware of the type of gasoline it needs and look before you pump. Don’t assume that the gas you put in your car can still go in your mower, chain saw or generator. Never use greater-than-10 percent ethanol gasoline blends, which are now commonly available at gas stations throughout the country and may be lower in price than other blends. It is illegal to use higher-ethanol gasoline blends in small engines such as your lawn mower, leaf blower or trimmer. What’s more, such fuels can be harmful and cause damage to small engines.

If you have a riding mower, start it while sitting in the driver’s seat, never while standing beside the mower. Always slow down when operating any mower on a slope or difficult curve.

n When operating a chain saw, wear protective gear such as safety footwear, gloves, chaps, safety goggles and hearing protection. Never carry a running chain saw when it isn’t being used, and be sure your work area is clear. Keep other people out of your work area. If you’re cutting down a tree, plan a retreat route for when the tree falls. Be aware of “kickback,” which can happen when the nose or tip of the guide bar touches an object, or when the wood you’re cutting pinches the saw chain in the cut. These scenarios could result in the guide bar kicking back toward the user.
n As you use an edger or trimmer, take safety measures such as wearing protective gear and ensuring that your work area is clear of any stones or debris that could fly up. Stop the motor when moving from location to location with your trimmer, and never put your hands or feet near the cutting area. CONSERVING KENYA!

I
have been to Kenya several times. I even honeymooned there so far back I don’t want to say. However it has been a good 10 years since I visited the last time, mainly because I found the Safari operators in Kenya had lost their way and started making a Disney attraction out of what was a spectacular country. Since then, I had been looking for Karen Blixen’s proverbial Out of Africa experience. I did Safaris in South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. I tried to track the great gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda several times, but was challenged by terrorists each time. Consequently, that is still on my “bucket list”. Invited to see the new Kenya on invitation from the Kicheche camps of several new Conservancy groups, I jumped at the chance. I had heard about these private groups purchasing large swaths of land throughout Kenya to preserve the animals and to preserve the country. Just before the rainy season, I left the US to see what had been accomplished. On the first day alone, in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy at the base of Mt. Kenya, I saw most of the Big Five! Elephants,

lions, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros all roamed freely across this giant fenced wilderness. That very night two cheetahs lay sleepily in the grass not far from the tented camp that Kicheche had provided. Now when I say tented, this was not like your average tent in the woods. These tented camps have proper bathrooms with running water. You can even get a shower every night...not a long one...but long enough even to wash your hair if you need to. Don’t look for the hair dryer, however, as these camps don’t have an electric current. They are solar powered and that lasts just so long in the cool dark evenings. No buffets here....only the best will do. At 5:30am (dawn), one of these same waiters brings you
coffee or tea and cookies to your tent door, to wake you up so you can prepare to go on your first game drive. What a great way to get a wakeup call! We are out at 6am and back around 9am filled with stories about who saw what. Best of all, within the conservancies, it is illegal to have more than two safari vehicles together at any one time! Gone were my memories of the old Kenya where when someone spotted a pride of lions within 5 minutes, there were 25 other vehicles surrounding them with tourists from around the World uttering adoring words loudly and clicking a myriad of camera shutters. None of that in the new Kenyan conservancies. There are now six conservancies covering thousands of acres all over Kenya. Best of all, these conservancies are giving jobs to locals and educating them about the preservation of the earth and its animals. No more plastic bags floating across the Mara. The people now pick up what waste and trash they see and stow it properly. People from the US are afraid to travel to Kenya after hearing about terrorists and mall bombings....but the Conservancies of Kenya couldn’t be more peaceful and wonderful. While selecting the right camp can be a daunting task for parents, Life Time - The Healthy Way of Life Company, which welcomes more than 65,000 kids to its camps across the country, has some key suggestions to ensure a positive summer for everyone. “Safety, fun, health and variety are priorities for us and we’ve learned what it takes to create the best camp experience for kids and their parents,” says Jennifer Veres, national senior program manager for kids’ activities. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you look at camps:
l Safety. Ask questions
in advance to ensure the camp has standard operating procedures in place to keep your kids safe. Are parents required to show their membership card or driver’s license to both check in and take their children home? Every employee should also have a state-approved background check and those working with kids should be CPR- and first aid-certified. Parents should also know the counselor to child ratio. Some day camp programs allow for a 1:20 ratio, although a lower ratio of, 1:10 is better. These higher standards help ensure the safety and engagement of the children.
l Activities. Find a camp that excites kids, provides a routine and has a variety of
healthy activities for kids to engage in. This is critical for parents who don’t want their kids wasting away summer days playing video games for hours on end. Jova is two and all boy! He is a wonderful hand-full who keeps you on your feet, and is way too smart for his age. He’s a very loving little boy, but can also be just as “ornery.” Kena is nine months old and has been quite a blessing. She had to have two fetal blood exchanges while in the womb and then had to be born six weeks early. Once she was born she had to get another blood exchange. Catherine is very happy to say that Kena is a healthy beautiful baby girl. She is a very happy baby, and loves to smile. Catherine and Doug have lived in Paulding since 2005. She is a stay home mom and he works for Proline Medical.
Being a mother, especially with eight, has its rewards and challenges. Catherine says, “The most rewarding thing about being a mom is watching the younger children learn and grow; and when they ask for something as small as tucking them in. It is rewarding watching the older children turn into great young adults who know right from wrong, and have God in their hearts.” She adds, “The most challenging thing about being a mom of eight is finding the time to do things with the children, but also finding the time to do the things that have to be done.” When asked about her secret to staying organized, Catherine says, “[We try] to have a reasonable routine that we can stick with. I get the 7 and 9 years clothes out for the whole school week. I usually clean on the same day each week and do laundry every day while kids are at school so it does not get backed up. The older kids each have a chore after dinner. One does the dishes, one cleans the table, and another cleans the floor. This helps us but also teaches them responsibility for the future.” The Little’s are a very tight family and do everything together; going to church, vacations, camping, watch movies, etc. Catherine says, “As a family, we have gone through many trials together, but God has always been so good to us and pulled us through.” On Mother’s Day they go to church together and sometimes out for dinner. Catherine says, “Although Mother’s Day is special, she feels loved and blessed every day that she gets to be a mom to her children.” It was such a blessing to meet and have this precious family on our cover. GRACIE ELLA (DOB ~02/10/2005) is a beautiful purebred female Calico Persian who was released to us
when her family had to move to California and couldn’t take GRACIE with them. GRACIE is really sweet, a bit apprehensive, and likes to be petted every chance she gets once she warms up to you. GRACIE is not a very active senior, sleeping most of the day. She likes Fancy Feast Fish and Shrimp (flaked) for breakfast and dinner - and won’t eat much else other than dry Royal Canin for Persians and Innova. GRACIE doesn’t talk much but purrs a lot, and she would probably do best in a home where she is the only cat, and doesn’t have to compete with either a dog or a child for affection from her new family members. GRACIE is spayed, up-to-date with vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, has received flea preventative, and is eligible to receive at least 30 days of prepaid pet health insurance. GRACIE’s adoption fee is our senior fee of $100.00.

Tips for Springtime Traveling with your Cat
S
ometimes, you will find it necessary to travel somewhere with your cat in tow. Doing so is not always easy. Here are a few tips for springtime traveling with your cat.
l Many people who travel with their cats do so by car. On the road, you want to avoid allowing your cat to roam around the car freely. You never know what could happen. She may interfere with your operation of the pedals or otherwise distract you. Not to mention the fact that your cat could get severely injured upon flying around in the event you get in an accident. l It is best that you keep your cat inside of an appropriate carrier while you are traveling by car. The carrier should not be placed in the front seat for safety reasons. Your passenger side airbag will generate enough force to crush the carrier and cat if it deploys. l Some cats get sick easily when traveling in a car. If yours does, you may want to avoid feeding too much while on the road. It may be a good idea to give your kitty a few treats though, especially if she is acting upset. Water should also be available for your cat.

l If you intend to keep your cat with you, make sure that your particular carrier is small enough to fit under the seat. Also, traveling in the luggage area is no picnic, and it may be hard on your cat’s health. With this in mind, you may want to get your cat checked out by the vet to ensure that it is safe to travel.

l Traveling with your cat by plane is also another option. Make sure you check with the airline to see if it will be an issue. Some airlines allow you to take one pet in the cabin, while others require you to check them into the luggage area.
l If your cat has a special type of food that she eats, then you will need to bring her food along with you too. You might find that you have a hard time finding the special food wherever you are traveling with your cat.

4 slices bacon Cooking spray 4 1/2 cups whole kernel corn 1/2 red bell pepper, chopped 1/2 cup half-and-half 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted 1 teaspoon white sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 (8 ounce) container chive and onion cream cheese
Place bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices on paper towels; crumble when cool enough to handle. Coat the inside of a 4-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Combine corn, red bell pepper, half-and-half, butter, sugar, salt, black pepper, and half the crumbled bacon in the slow cooker; stir well. Cook on High for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Stir cream cheese into corn mixture; cook until cheese melts, about 10 more minutes. Stir well and top with remaining bacon before serving.
Ginger-Orange Cheesecake
(Makes 10 Servings) Nonstick cooking spray 12 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese (Neufchatel), softened ½ cup sugar 1 teaspoon finely shredded orange peel (set aside) 2 tablespoons orange juice 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon vanilla ½ cup nonfat sour cream ¾ cup refrigerated or frozen egg product, thawed, or 3 eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup warm water 2 medium Cara Cara and/or blood oranges, sliced Finely chopped crystalized ginger (optional) Lightly coat a 1 1/2-quart souffle dish or casserole* with cooking spray. Tear off an 18x12-inch piece of heavy foil; cut in half lengthwise. Fold each piece lengthwise into thirds. Crisscross the foil strips and place the dish in the center of the crisscross; set aside. For filling, in a large bowl beat cream cheese, sugar, orange juice, flour, and vanilla with an electric mixer on medium speed until combined. Beat in sour cream until smooth. Beat in eggs with mixer on low speed just until combined. Stir in orange peel. Pour filling into prepared dish. Cover dish tightly with foil. Pour warm water into a 3 1/2- to 5-quart slow cooker. Using the ends of the foil strips, transfer dish to cooker. Leave foil strips under dish. Cover and cook on high-heat setting for 2 1/2 hours or until center is set. Using foil strips carefully remove dish from cooker; discard foil strips. Cool completely, uncovered, on a wire rack. Cover and chill for 4 to 24 hours before serving. Garnish with orange slices and crystallized ginger if using.
