Jeff & Carrie Davis

eff and Carrie Davis are a couple grounded in their faith and using their love of outdoors to make a difference. They met through an internet dating site in 2005 and married in August 2006. They will celebrate their 9th anniversary next month and Jeff says, “I am a very lucky man to have Carrie as my wife and best friend.” Jeff has lived in Cobb and/or Paulding County his entire life, but Paulding has been home for the past 12 years. Carrie is originally from Johnstown, Pennsylvania but relocated to Georgia almost 20 years ago. He worked in the IT Department of Caraustar, Inc. for 16 years until being laid off in 2010. This was an answered prayer as Jeff had YOUR NEW with been realizing that God was moving him DISCOVER toward something better. CarrieHOME” is a Pricing Analyst for Printpack, Inc. at their corporate office. Mountain Apartments. They share a love of outdoors including fishing, camping, hunting, etc. During football season, they cheer on their home town teams, the Georgia Bulldogs and Pittsburg Steelers. They are active members at West Ridge Church, and self-proclaimed “foodies,” although Carrie will never forgive Jeff for talking her into trying baby octopus. She is happy being crafty and doing DIY projects. Jeff and Carrie are born again believers and have a strong Christian faith in their walk with Jesus. Shortly after they were married, they discovered they would not be able to have children. They were heartbroken and began to explore other options. They faithfully prayed for direction from God…their answer was “Wait.” It was difficult, and there were many sleepless nights, but they waited and continued to pray.

In late 2008 Jeff felt God moving him. He was no longer happy at work, and so he prayed for God’s direction. He began to pray about how he could use his gifts and interests to do something for Christ and make a difference. After sharing this with Carrie, they gathered their friends around to pray with them. Jeff and Carrie got their answer. In early 2009 Jeff and Carrie established Truth in Nature. A non-profit organization established to use God’s creation as an outdoor ministry for single parent boys, mostly without a father. Carrie’s father had passed away when she was 12 and Jeff ’s parents were divorced; this gave them some familiarity with what some of these boys may go through. Truth in Nature offers programs throughout the year in fishing, archery, camping, hunting, etc., all the while sharing God’s word. They had 4 young men in their first program. Slowly but surely the ministry grew, and men from all over the community came wanting to help as mentors in the program. Read more about our cover on page 30

Do You Have Teen Drivers at Home?

www.studiodanceinc.com

5 Tips to Encourage Safety for Teen Drivers By Hal Friedman

Y

oung men and women ages 15 to 24 represent about 14 percent of the U.S. population. Despite the small population percentage, they account for over half of all motor vehicle injuries. Perhaps even more dramatic, car crashes are the number one cause of death for adolescents. While the accident rate for teenage drivers remains high, there are ways to lower this number by practicing safe driving techniques. It is especially important for parents to encourage teen drivers to follow these five safety tips to help lower the number of motor vehicle injuries in the United States.

3698 Largent Way

l

1) Stay off the Phone: This tip may seem like old news, but turning off the cell phone in the car can truly save lives. Today, too many people are distracted by these small electronics which may prove deadly operating a 2,000 pound machine. There have been many studies that indicate that using a cell phone while driving is similar to drinking and driving-even when using a hands-free phone option. Not only should teen drivers refrain from talking on their phones while driving, but it is important to stress that texting should be eliminated while driving as well. Many states have already banned texting and driving, but regardless, for maximum car safety, phones need to stay turned off.

Suite 201 l Marietta

Conveniently located across from The Avenue West Cobb

We provide an environment where kids can have a fun and happy dental experience while receiving the very best dental care available. Come tour our state of the art office with with themed rooms representing each continent from around the world.

2) Follow the Speed Limit: While this tip may seem obvious, it is important to remind teen drivers that speed limits are put in place for a reason: to reduce the risk of accidents and to promote safe driving. Speeding is a major contributor to fatal teen car accidents. There is no need to keep up with current traffic speeds if they are above the speed limit. Stay in the right hand lane as much as possible, and drive according to the limit established.

Michael A. Rossitch, DDS, MS, PC Specialist in Pediatric Dentistry

3) Minimize Distractions: Eating, drinking, and flipping through radio stations are all functions that require a driver to use one hand while driving. Focus on using both hands while driving and limit these extra activities. Performing external actions while driving a car can be very distracting. This can cause people to unexpectedly lose control of a vehicle or fail to notice impending danger in a timely manner.

5) Drive Alone: Driving or riding with friends is a liberating experience for new drivers, but this can also lead to more distractions and unsafe driving. Practice driving solo or with an older adult before adding additional teen passengers to the vehicle. Although these tips may seem unnecessary, they are extremely important. Following safe driving tips never becomes redundant, and in the end it helps save lives. Driving is a major responsibility and young drivers should be reminded regularly of the importance of using safe driving practices. Finally, in the event that your teenage driver is involved in some type of car accident, make sure they are well informed about who to contact and what to do. Traveling with emergency contact information is always advisable to help reduce the stress of a car accident.

770-547-0799 PAGE 8

4) Choose a Safe Car: While young drivers may be more focused on a car that looks cool, choosing the safest vehicle possible is extremely important when joining the motor vehicle world. Look for cars with anti-lock brakes, air bags, electronic stability control and a top rated crash safety record. Do your research. Purchasing a safe and well equipped car may be the difference between life and death.

e all know what it means to be selfless. At the right moments, we all act selflessly putting others interests ahead of our own. We pause and allow a car to enter the flow of traffic ahead of us; hand a few dollars to a stranger; or put aside personal plans to be with a grieving friend. But, there is a vast gulf between a selfless act and a selfless lifestyle. So, what is it that leads some people to purposefully place the interests of others ahead of their own…ON a daily basis? I don’t know that we can pinpoint the answer to that question. But, there is some evidence that we are hardwired to pursue lives of selfless generosity. It’s only after we’ve had time to rationalize that we end up acting selfishly. It’s only after our initial impulses die down that we are hesitant to help others. I’ve realized recently there is a true art to living selflessly. After years and years of mental training to seek my own interests, I can rapidly assess a situation and determine what is best for me. Within milliseconds, I can override my hardwiring for generosity and choose to ignore those around me. In fact, I make these decisions hundreds of times a day…to the point where I subconsciously and unintentionally choose my good over everything else. What that means is that if I am going to live a selfless life… if I am going to live the way I’m hardwired to live…I have

Selflessness questions about what pushed them in this direction. Share your struggles and successes. Selfless generosity always works better in community! Be teachable and allow their example to pull you UP the Ladder. Use the Ladder as a “what to expect” guide. You may not experience the motivations listed on every single rung, but you will hit significant growth points and recognize many of these motivations in your own life as you aim at being an imitator of God’s humble selflessness. Start praying now for God’s help in this matter. Then start listening to Him and watching for opportunities to act selflessly today.

to intentionally re-develop this skill in my life. It takes work. It’s a craft of looking of others through a different lens. It’s an art of listening to others and to God more carefully. From that point, it involves the work of rewiring our brains. Over time, these intentional, prayerful acts of selflessness become a habit. As a result, we contribute to human flourishing and we live the selfless lives that we were created to live.

Over the last few years, we began to comprehend the benefits of a tool called the Generosity Ladder. The Ladder not only helps us identify where we currently stand with our motivations, but it also gives us an idea of what to expect as we begin to live selflessly. Rewiring our brains takes time and intentionality. It takes swallowing pride and making tough decisions. But, the end results lead back to the place where God wanted us to be all along…dwelling in His kingdom. Here are some simple solutions to start moving up the Ladder and practicing the art of selflessness.

Plot your current position on the Ladder. Identify someone who hangs out on a higher rung of the Ladder than you. It may be a parent, friend or someone in your church. These people can help you move toward selfless, generous living. After you identify them, spend time with them. Allow them to mentor you. Ask

“Attention Sciatica And Low Back Pain Sufferers…”

Could One Hour With Our Doctors Give You The Answer To Your Disc Pain?

Now, in Acworth, GA, Dr. Erin Arnold, D.C. & Dr. Amy Valente, D.C. have what may be the most important breakthrough in non-surgical back pain treatment. Before and after MRI studies have shown disc bulges shrink in size – even with the most painful cases of L4-L5 & L5-S1 herniations. If you’ve had disc problems for years, recently injured your back, or you’re suffering with sciatica, you must hear about these new studies. Scientific studies tell us that spinal discs are responsible for most of the aches and pains people suffer from. Discs act like a cushion between our backbones and allow for a space at each level so the nerves can exit the spinal column. When these discs get injured or wear out from bad posture, they begin to degenerate and cause pain. Bulging and herniations begin to form, pressing on the nerve roots. If the herniations occur at L4-L5, they can severely compromise the large sciatic nerve, causing muscle weakness, tingling, and severe pain. The most common invasive treatment for disc herniations is surgery. This costs quite a bit of money. Even with health insurance the patient is left with their own portion of the bill, in excess of $10,000-$15,000, and sometimes more. The recovery time and missed work can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months, not to mention the obvious severe risks associated with all surgery. But here’s the biggest problem… there is a high failure rate of back surgery. One medical study found that on average, 53% of L5-S1 back surgeries fail to produce relief of symptoms (International Orthop 1987.) Before You Go Under The Knife And Opt For Spinal Surgery… You should seriously consider a less invasive approach called spinal decompression. Non-surgical spinal decompression is a new technology that has been proven to reverse disc herniations. It creates a vacuum effect on the disc, which pulls the disc back into its normal position and brings in a fresh blood supply to promote healing. Do You Have A Disc Problem? If you experience any of the following in your back or neck, chances are your pain is due to a disc bulge, herniation or degeneration: u A vice-like squeezing feeling in your back u Sitting causes back or leg pain uStabbing pain at the belt line or in your neck u Can’t turn over in bed without hurting u Numbness in your toes or fingers u Fire down your legs u Searing pain radiates into your arm u Prickling in your leg or toes Finally, Some Good News…… If you’ve been suffering with back pain or arm/ leg pain caused by a disc bulge, disc herniation or squashed or compressed discs. Until recently, the only advice for many of you suffering in pain was to try what you’ve been told: p Try exercising p Try physical therapy

and best of all there will be no dangerous drugs, no invasive procedures, and no painful exercises.

p Try pain medications p Try muscle relaxers p Try pain shots p Try dangerous back surgery p Just live with it If you’re like most, none of these have worked for you or you are afraid of what could happen if you do try some of these. Exercising makes you hurt more, pain medications and muscle relaxers cover up the problem and give you side effects. Pain shots can cause more pain, don’t work or don’t last very long or FIX the problem, back surgery didn’t work, or made you worse. Or maybe you were one of the lucky ones that back surgery actually helped, but now the problem is back with a vengeance. Whatever your situation, you owe it to yourself to check into a Breakthrough Computerized Non-Surgical Treatment for back pain and sciatic or leg pain caused by a bulging, herniated or squashed disc or discs.

How “Good” Discs become “Bad” Discs Over time the discs in your back tend to get squashed or compressed, especially if you’ve played certain sports when younger or have a job that requires lots of sitting or standing in one place for long periods of time. Car accidents, lifting things, very physical jobs just to name a few.

Eventually this happens to a lot of us. Statistics show over 80% of Americans will suffer with back pain some time in their life. Spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, every once in a while I even catch a patient sleeping during treatment! How Does This Machine Work? Haven’t you ever had the thought…”Gosh, if somebody could just pull me apart…I would feel a whole lot better.” Yeah, we know you have. And it kind of makes a bit of sense.

When I came in North Cobb Spine & Nerve Institute I was suffering with Sciatic Pain that ran down my leg. Since starting the decompression therapy I have a lot less pain and my quality of life has improved. I can do more things and golf more. From my 1st visit I felt that I was very important and that my care was a top priority to the doctors and staff. I am very thankful for their care and dedication to my health. Much thanks to you & your staff, Bill Otott – Retired (Golfer)

It has helped hundreds of people who were suffering just like you. This new treatment machine we are calling “the squashed disc machine.”

It’s kind of like a cookie with cream filling, and the cream filling will start to ooze out from between the sides of the cookie if pressure is applied on top of the cookie (like gravity on our spines).

Does Decompression really work? Absolutely! When you come in we will provide you with studies that show why decompression is a preferred method of treatment. But what provides the best “proof” on how well decompression works is what patients say about it. Just Listen to What Our Patients Had to Say:

I originally started getting help at North Cobb Spine & Nerve for my Sciatica that ran down my left leg. One of my biggest concerns was not getting surgery. Now that I have gotten decompression therapy I have no more pain and my life feels normal again. My sciatic pain is gone. Everyone at the practice is so helpful and fantastic! I was amazed that I could get help without surgery. Thank you, Mike Morton- Sales Representative

As you can see, spinal decompression has a high success rate with helping disc herniations, sciatica, and back pain. In just a matter of weeks you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again. Feel the Improvement – and Say “Yes” to Life Again With my “Decompression Evaluation” we’ll be able to find the problem and then get to work on it. Think of how you’ll feel in just a few short weeks. See and feel your life change for the better. Start your body on the way to pain-free, normal living, feel tight joints rest, relax, free up, muscles tied in knots will become more supple and strength in your muscles may increase. You’re able to live life like a normal person again, without back pain – able to play with your kids, enjoy time with friends, and finally get a good night’s rest.

Well someone else, actually a medical manufacturer, back pain specialists, neurosurgeons and engineers have come up with just that. A machine that gently The Single Most Important Solution To Your pulls your apart, stretches the disc to a certain point Sciatica and Back Pain that causes a drop in pressure inside the disc (like It’s time for you to find out if spinal decompression a little vacuum in the middle of the cream filling) will be your sciatic and back pain solution. Bed Bugs and Summer Travel:

How to Protect Yourself

W

hen summer arrives, all you can think about is spending some relaxing time away from your hectic everyday environment. Unfortunately, bed bugs feel the same way. They’re itching to get out and see the world just as much as

you are. Bed bugs are skilled hitchhikers that can be picked up from hotels, motels, public transportation, rental homes and other public areas. You might think you’re safe at a five-star luxury hotel, but bed bugs don’t discriminate. Bed bugs can attach themselves to and be carried by any of your personal belongings, including luggage, clothing, computers and more. Use these tips as a checklist to make sure you’re protected before setting out to enjoy fun in the sun. * Know the signs. Before you embark on your vacation, take some time to educate yourself on the signs of a bed bug infestation. These include tiny dark or red spots from a fresh bed bug feeding or a trampled bed bug. Although they are very small, bed bugs, their eggs and cast skins can be seen by the naked eye. They can usually be found hiding in tight, typically undisturbed and cramped spaces near the sleeping areas of a home. Additionally, unexplained bites on a person’s skin may be another sign of a bed bug outbreak. If the infestation is large, bed bugs will lurk in other areas outside the bedroom and you will likely smell a sickly sweet odor.

* Take preventive measures. If you’ve been traveling often, have a child in college or have had a previous bed bug infestation, it’s important to be proactive about prevention. Pack a flashlight in your suitcase to help you inspect your travel accommodations right when you arrive. Ask a pest professional to help you find a strategy that’s best for your family and home. If you travel often or feel you are at high risk for bed bugs, consider an active liner on your bed at home. Where other bedding products such as encasements solely attempt to trap bed bugs within or prevent them from migrating, an active liner kills bed bugs on contact and stops infestations before they establish. * Identify a problem early on. If the place you’re staying does have an infestation, you’ll want to know right away to avoid coming into contact. When you arrive at your travel destination, first place your luggage in the bath tub as bed bugs infrequently enjoy cold surfaces. Take out your flashlight to begin your inspection. Gently exhale along the top corners and sides of the headboard as carbon dioxide attracts hungry bed bugs. Slide a credit card between the headboard and the wall and look for signs with the flashlight. Carefully inspect the bedding and any couch or chair cushions. Notify management and remove your personal belongings if you find any signs of bed bugs. * Be careful when you get home. When you return home, don’t even think about throwing your luggage or backpack on your bed while you unpack. Launder all clothing at the highest temperature that the fabric can stand. Place non-washable items, like pillows and stuffed animals, into the dryer on the highest setting for thirty minutes. If you feel you are at heightened risk, consider using ActiveGuard Mattress Liners. Covering your mattress or box spring like a fitted sheet, they are specifically formulated to kill bed bugs upon contact and will continue to do so for two years.

Ever Argue with a Woman?

Turn Your Retirement ‘Vision’ into Reality

Divorce l Family Law Pobate l Juvenile Child Support l Adoption

Contributed by Edward Jones Investments, Dallas/Acworth

R

etirement can be an exciting, active time of your life. But if you’re going to get the full benefits from your retirement years — which could last two, or even three, decades — you’ll need to have a vision for what you want to do. And to transform this vision into reality, you’ll need to take a “holistic” approach — one that involves a financial strategy, clear communications with family members and an awareness of the challenges that may stand in your way.

Angela Woodall, Attorney 770-505-4357

To articulate and achieve your vision, ask yourself a series of questions, such as the following:

awoodallattorney@aol.com

• What do I want to do? When you retire, do you plan on traveling around the world? Purchasing a vacation home? Pursuing your hobbies? Or maybe you’re even thinking of opening a small business. Clearly, you have many options — and you’ll need to be aware that some choices are going to be more costly than others. If you can identify how you want to spend your retirement years and then put a “price tag” on your goal — or at least come up with a pretty good estimate of how much money you’ll need each year — you can then create an appropriate investment strategy. Such a strategy will include both your need for growth — during your pre-retirement and retirement years — and your need for income, especially during your retirement years. Your investment strategy will also need to be based on your risk tolerance, family situation and time horizon — how many years you have until your retirement. • What “roadblocks” might I encounter? As you work to achieve your retirement vision, you may well encounter some “roadblocks” along the way. One significant roadblock is the amount of health care expenses you might face during retirement. Many people think Medicare will cover everything, but that’s not the case — in fact, you could easily spend a few thousand dollars each year, out of pocket, for health care costs. And since these costs typically rise as you move further into retirement, you’ll need a reasonable portion of your assets to be allocated to investments with the potential for rising income. Even beyond normal health care costs, though, you’ll need to be aware that you could eventually need some type of long-term care, such as a stay in a nursing home or assistance from a home health aide. These costs can be enormous; to cope with them, you need to prepare well ahead of time, so you may want to consult with your financial advisor for possible solutions. • How can I protect my family? Your retirement vision can’t just involve yourself, or even just yourself and your spouse. To fully enjoy your retirement years, you’ll want to know that you are helping to protect your grown children from financial and emotional burdens that could fall on them should you become incapacitated in some way. Among the steps you might consider taking is establishing a durable power of attorney, which allows you to appoint an agent to manage your financial affairs, make health care decisions or conduct other business for you during your incapacitation. Consult with your legal advisor about creating a durable power of attorney. You will find that having your retirement vision come to fruition can be a great feeling. So, do whatever it takes to make it happen. This article was contributed by Roberto De Jesus of Edward Jones Investments in Dallas/Acworth - 678-574-5166.

Tires that are underinflated by 8 pounds per-square-inch (psi) can reduce vehicle fuel economy by as much as 2 percent, and tires can lose about 1-2 psi each month under normal driving conditions, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office. That’s why Abram strongly recommends taking five minutes each month to check your tire pressure. “It’s quick and easy, and if you do it regularly, you’ll extend the life of your tire and get better fuel economy.”

Abram says that while today’s tires are true technical marvels, he suggests you manually check them because you can’t tell a tire’s pressure is off by just looking at it. “Even if you were looking at one of our bigger tires, like the GEOLANDAR G055, you wouldn’t be able to tell the air pressure is wrong unless it was almost flat. Same with driving on slightly underinflated tires. You probably wouldn’t feel a big difference, but they wouldn’t be nearly as effective.” Checking your tires regularly will pay off, but Abram says there are many other ways you can maintain your tires for improved driving and fuel-cost savings. Here are a couple: Rotating your tires will prevent uneven wear and promote a smoother ride. Because the weight distribution on your car or truck can vary, it’s best to rotate your tires. Yokohama advises drivers to rotate their tires in accordance with vehicle owner’s manual recommendations to ensure even tread wear and optimum tread life. Yokohama recommends that its tires be rotated at 6,000 - 8,000 mile intervals. Tires that are balanced correctly will provide a smoother ride and help prevent improper wear. Check your tire alignment once a year. Misaligned tires create unnecessary tire wear and higher fuel consumption. Tires must be replaced when the tread is worn down to 2/32 of an inch (the lowest legal limit). It’s best to replace them before they reach 2/32 depending on your drive (geographically and type of streets). For example, rural streets that aren’t regularly plowed are different than city streets that are regularly plowed. Winter traction and wet traction can decline as tread depth decreases. Check your tread depth by placing a penny upside down into a tread groove. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tire’s tread has worn down to the legal limit and you need to buy new tires. By following these simple steps, it’ll not only benefit your wallet, but your family will be much safer too. For more tire care and safety tips visit yokohamatire.com or www.rma.org.

medical The Effects of Sunscreen By Leigh Erin Connealy, M.D.

F

or the past 30 years, you’ve been told — over and over again — how dangerous it is to spend time in the sun. Like most people, you’ve probably spent lots of money on sunscreens, sunblock, sunglasses, protective clothing, maybe even an umbrella to protect yourself from those supposedly deadly UV rays.

With all the anti-sun hysteria, you’d think skin cancer would be a thing of the past. Instead, experts at the Centers for Disease Control say they’re seeing “significant” increases in diagnoses and deaths from the disease.

770-505-9100 770-429-2326 770-949-3797 770-429-5507 770-422-7630 770-924-1083 706-632-7801

How can that be? After years of coating ourselves with gallons of sunscreen and hiding from the midday sun like vampires, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the nation, with one in five Americans at risk. You might think that mainstream doctors would look at those statistics and change their recommendations. Instead, they’re doubling down. Here’s the latest advice from the American Academy of Dermatology’s website: “Seek shade, cover up, and wear sunscreen.” Really? What’s that definition of insanity again? Oh, right — doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. In other words, after decades of this failed policy, the medical establishment is still insisting the sun is the enemy. And they expect us to believe them — even though skin cancer rates are soaring? Sorry, no sale! There are two simple things you can do to minimize your risk. So if you’re serious about avoiding skin cancer, please read on... First, increase the amount of vitamin D in your body. You can do that with sensible sun exposure on bare skin (no sunscreen, please!), like your arms or legs, so you don’t expose your face or neck and risk developing wrinkles. Limit sunbathing to no more than 20 minutes a day. Overdoing your time in the sun could lead to sunburn, and that definitely does contribute to skin cancer. So use a timer and head for the shade or sunscreen after 20 minutes. If that doesn’t work — and if you’re a senior, it may not due to changes caused by aging — take 5,000 IUs of vitamin D3 daily. People of color should use vitamin D3 supplements, since they require two to three times as much sun exposure for their skin to produce as much vitamin D as a light-skinned person. Just raising your vitamin D levels can reduce your skin cancer risk by 30 to 50 percent, and can protect you against heart disease, multiple sclerosis, immune system disorders, brittle bones, diabetes, and much more. Every cell in your body is equipped with a vitamin D receptor and needs the nutrient to function properly. Yet 99 percent of the patients I see are vitamin D deficient. [A blood test will show the bodies level of Vitamin D; Dr. Connealy recommends a level of 50-70.] Another way to protect against skin cancer — cut back on your intake of omega-6 essential fatty acids (EFAs) and increase omega-3s. Omega-6s are found in common vegetable oils, like sunflower, soy, safflower, and corn. They’re used in most processed, prepared, and fast foods. Omega-6s aren’t unhealthy, when eaten in moderation (which isn’t the case for most of those who eat the Standard American Diet.) The ideal ratio for omega-3s and -6s should be roughly equal at 1:1, but the typical American consumes a ratio of 1:20 or worse! Unchecked by omega-3s, omega-6s can promote tumor growth and runaway inflammation, two things that contribute to all kinds of cancer, including skin cancer. Here’s an easy fix. Throw away vegetable-based cooking oils and cut back on omega-6 sources, like snacks and fast foods. Then add more omega-3s by eating wild-caught fish (no more than once a week, due to pollution) or organic, free-range meats. Omega-3 supplements (3 grams daily) are another option.

Time’s

Contributed by Cornerstone Chiropractic

A

s we get older, most of us begin to experience the acceleration of the passage of time. The sensation of time passing gets faster and faster, until for many of us weeks begin to feel like days and months begin to feel like weeks. This is very disconcerting and we’d like to be able to slow things down. We’d like to make the months and years whiz by a little less quickly. This isn’t possible, of course, from the point of view of time itself, and the only comfort may lie in the fact that everyone else is experiencing similar phenomena. “Time flies” is a common expression. But there are solutions, relative ones, by which we may get a better grasp on our personal relationship to time and time’s effect on our physical bodies. The first solution is associated with the concept of present time consciousness. In other words, the more you

Arrow.> actually experience the present moment itself, the more you will be participating in what these moments offer and the more you will be getting out of the experiences of which your life is comprised. “Being present” is a skill that gets stronger with practice. There’s always the tendency for our minds to wander off on any other track than the one we want to be on, that is, being present. But with practice our ability to be present in the moment expands. One of the remarkable benefits of this practice is that our experience of time passing slows down. By being present, our hours, days, and weeks become much more meaningful. We experience more of life and the passage of time no longer washes over us like an unending series of 20-foot waves. The second solution involves taking better care of ourselves. When we’re healthy and well, each day is more enjoyable. When we’re healthy and well, our physical state is not a daily concern and we’re free to do what we want. We can read, study, exercise, engage in new work activities, or simply relax and watch a movie without the

concerns and constraints of physical pain and disease. Our ability to participate in these unique experiences enriches our lives and makes the passage of time a joy rather than a burden. But as with the skill of being present, the skill of being healthy and well requires practice. Such practice takes the form of eating a nutritious diet,1,2 doing regular vigorous exercise,3 and getting sufficient rest. With these practices in place, we are well on our way to increasing our long-term levels of health and wellness. Thus, although we cannot control the actual passage of time, we can control our relationship to the phenomenon of time passing. By learning the skill of present time consciousness and practicing healthy behaviors, we become able to add more life to our years and may even be adding more years to our lives. Advice on Buying or Selling your Home By Wendy Chambers, Chambers Select

TOP FIVE REASONS WHY NOW IS THE TIME TO SELL YOUR HOUSE

N

ow is the time to get excited about buying or selling a home. It is a seller’s market. A seller’s market means market conditions are favorable to people looking to sell their home. So if you have thought about selling your house in the last 5 years and didn’t, now may be the perfect time for you. 1. Inventory is low and buyers need homes to buy. Because of the low inventory, there are not a lot of homes on the market for buyers to choose from. For the seller, this means that if you price the home correctly, it should sell quickly and will often receive multiple offers and ultimately end up selling for more than what you wanted to sell it for. 2. Home prices are rising around across the county. According to the National Association of Realtors, this month prices have recently increased by 4.1%. 3. Lower interest rates. Rates have remained low over the past several years. While they may go up and down a little each month, overall we are still at historical lows. At some point, rates will go up and this will impact the purchase power of home buyers. 4. Closings are happening quicker. With changes coming in the closing process, take advantage of the current ease of quickness of getting to the closing table. 5. Rising rental prices. The average rental price has increased by 15% in the last 5 years according to the National Association of Realtors. This makes it a better time for renters to decide to own their own home, meaning there are even more people looking for your home.

1. A real estate agent knows the market in your area. They have access to all of the information that will help you to price your home right so it will sell and appraise for the price the market dictates. 2. An experienced real estate agent can help you get your house ready to sell. Staging a house and by knowing the minor improvements needed, will increase the marketability of your home. This will help your house show well and ultimately help it sell for the best price. 3. By hiring a real estate agent you are allowing them to market your home correctly in order to potentially sell it for a higher price, but also sell it faster. Agents list you house in MLS which then feeds to several different public sites for maximum exposure. 4. A real estate agent regularly talks to other real estate professionals. Word of mouth is an effective way to find buyers, especially with a market that is low in inventory. Often times, houses sell prior to listing the house just from an agent letting other agents know that it is coming to the market. 5. A real estate agent can help you fill out the necessary paperwork; they can help you negotiate legal contracts and protect your legal rights when selling your home.

Invite Hummingbirds and Butterflies to Your Garden

ow that warmer weather has arrived, we’re beginning to see hummingbirds and butterflies around the garden. If you are looking to attract these wonderful creatures to your garden, here are a few things you need to know.

The easiest way to attract hummingbirds is to hang several hummingbird feeders in the garden. Make sure you have at least two feeders and hang them at different locations in the garden or around your home because hummingbirds are very territorial. A simple hummingbird food solution recipe is to mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water. Boil the water on the stove for about 2 or 3 minutes before adding the sugar and then stir until the sugar completely dissolves. Cool the mixture down and fill up your feeders; store the leftover solution in the refrigerator for refilling. Clean your feeders at least once a week. If the sugar water becomes cloudy, that means the sugar is beginning to ferment which could make the hummingbirds sick. Hummingbirds come to feeders that are bright red in color so make sure the feeders you put up have a lot of red on them. It’s really not good to mix red food coloring into the sugar-water solution you make up to feed them. The red color on the feeder is enough to attract them and we suggest you mix up a clear solution of sugar and water to feed them.

Attract butterflies by leaving bits of decaying fruit on a plate. Any fruit will do such as oranges, apples, melons, or bananas which are past their prime for your consumption.

Even though butterflies get most of their nutrition from flower nectar, they obtain certain minerals from sipping moisture from mud puddles. To make butterfly puddles, bury a container, next fill it with sand or gravel and then fill with water. Hummingbirds and butterflies feed on nectar in blooms and they feed on many of our flowers, shrubs, and trees that we have growing in our landscape areas. The following is a partial list:

Plants that attract Hummingbirds and Butterflies l Vines including clematis, crossvine and honeysuckle. l Host Plants for butterflies include parsley, fennel, dill and milkweed l Trees and shrubs provide shelter (especially broad leaved shrubs), but these also provide nectar sources: Abelia, azalea, butterfly bush, and weigela. l Perennials that will add color to your garden and provide nectar are a great hummingbird and butterfly attractor. For shade consider hosta, heuchera, and columbine. For sunny spots aster, daylily, beebalm, black-eyed Susan, butterfly weed, cardinal flower, coneflower, lantana, guara, blanket flower, agastache, penstemon, phlox, sedum, salvias, and verbena are all great plants for a hummingbird/butterfly friendly space. l Annual plants can be included to attract them as well, including: Angelonia, calibrachoa, cosmos, fuschia, gerbera daisy, hibiscus, lantana, pentas, petunia, purslane, verbena and zinnia. You can visit the Master Gardener Extension Volunteer Butterfly demonstration garden at 530 West Memorial Drive in Dallas to see examples of planting for these pollinators.

EMILY KNAPP

E

mily Knapp of EK Studio loves all things creative. She has been an artist and photographer for over 10 years and earned her BFA at Kennesaw State University in 2011. She has since been evolving herself in many forms of art and teaching. She currently teaches at a Senior Wellness Center in Cobb and at Paulding Parks and Recreation. Emily is also a member of the Paulding Fine Arts Association located at the old Dallas Courthouse. As an artist Emily has included her love for nature and the outdoors into all of her art including photography. She enjoys capturing real moments and real smiles, “I love candid photographs with real smiles; this is what makes a genuine moment.” The inspiration in all her art comes from her love of all things natural – animals, nature and her farm in Dallas, Georgia.

Truth in Nature was a 2nd job for Jeff and Carrie. They began to pray for God to provide a way to continue to minister to more young men while maintaining their effectiveness. In October of 2010 God answered that prayer. Jeff was notified that he would be laid off at the end of the year. This was the scariest, most faith building, and exciting time they had ever experienced.

Emily also loves being a mother to her two young children Kyla, age 5 and Nova, age 3. She and her husband Kyle have been best friends since they were 11 years old and were high school sweethearts; they married in 2008. Emily and Kyle enjoy being able to raise their children on their family’s small farm and living next door to her parents.

Jeff began committing his full time efforts to Truth in Nature and since then, God has continued to provide means both personally and for the organization. He has never looked back; allowing God to lead him all the way. Carrie also, continues to support Truth in Nature in many ways.

To contact Emily call 404-444-7937, email emilyknapp@ekstudioart.com or check out her website at www.ekstudioart.com. To see Emily’s upcoming art shows and for special photography session pricing please “like” EK Studio on Facebook at www. facebook.com/ekstudioart

Truth in Nature is now running programs in both Louisiana and South Carolina. They have worked with over 100 young men in Georgia, mainly from Paulding. In fact the local chapter has grown so much their current “God Sized” prayer is to have a facility with a small piece of property possibly with a pond and building where they can work with more young men, hold smaller programs, host overnight lodging, have a mentorship center, and leadership training. “God is good and is faithful all the time. Without Him none of this would be possible. We encourage those that may be reading this regardless of what God is putting in front of you, whether it be infertility like we dealt with or some other problem or issue. Wait on Him to reveal what His path is for your life. Put your faith and trust in Him and He will lead the way. Pray about it. God has led so many young men through our programs that we now consider ourselves such a big part of their life and seeing them grow. These are “our” boys and our answer to prayer.” - Jeff and Carrie Davis For more information on Truth in Nature visit www.truthinnature.org or email Jeff.davis@truthinnature.org

(DOB ~5/3/2007), a purebred male Blue Lynx Point Birman with gorgeous blue eyes. I was originally given as a gift to my previous owner; and even though I am one of the few single coated cat breeds (having no undercoat, thus making me a “lower allergen” cat), my previous owner discovered she is allergic to me and felt that I needed a new home to get the attention I deserve. In general, we Birmans are known for our beauty and gentleness. We are almost dog-like in our devotion and will follow you around “helping”. We are a medium energy cat, enjoying quiet relaxation but will also enjoy play time well into our old age. I personally am good with children, super sweet, very friendly and loving, and I talk quite a bit! Sometimes, though, I get a bit startled if you approach me too quickly. But I’m sure as soon as I can learn to trust, I can certainly overcome that! If you will give me the opportunity, I will provide you with love, laughter, loyalty and companionship for years to come. I am neutered, up-to-date with vaccines, negative for Feline FIV/FeLV, dewormed, will be microchipped and receive at least 30 days of prepaid pet health insurance. Because I am a considered a Senior, my adoption fee is $150.00.

ive manatees fitted with satellite transmitters mark the start of a project aimed at giving researchers a clearer picture of how these endangered mammals use the murky estuarine waters near the Kings Bay submarine base and along the rest of Georgia’s coast.

Wildlife agencies and organizations from Georgia and Florida teamed up to capture, outfit with GPS tracking devices and release the manatees back into Cumberland Sound. The five are the first tagged in the multi-year effort to document manatee activity near Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, map migratory paths and habitat use along the Southeastern coast, and provide baseline data to help assess manatee health. Project partners include the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Aquarium, Sea to Shore Alliance and others. Federally listed as endangered, manatees migrate each spring from Florida to Georgia, attracted by abundant marsh grass and other aquatic vegetation. Manatees occur in all tidal waters throughout coastal Georgia from April through October.

These large, slow-moving animals swim just below the surface, often putting them in harm’s way of oncoming boats. Watercraft collisions caused 30 percent of the manatee mortalities documented in the state since 2000. The statistic highlights the need to better understand manatee movements in Georgia.

Call to r Now! Registe

On June 3 and 4, the team used a DNR helicopter to spot manatees. Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s capture boat deployed a net to encircle the half-ton animals. Biologists and veterinary staff examined those caught – all adult males – took health samples, attached transmitters and released them unharmed. The transmitter, tethered to a belt around the tail, floats at the surface behind the manatee.

Georgia Aquarium is helping with field operations and analyzing blood and other samples. “We are proud and excited to be a part of this project, which allows us to expand our Health and Environmental Risk Assessment programs,” said Dr. Gregory Bossart, Georgia Aquarium senior vice president and chief veterinary officer. “These studies allow us to look at dolphins and now manatees as sentinel species, which helps provide Georgia Aquarium and other researchers with valuable information about animal health, the overall health of the oceans they inhabit and how the oceans affect human health.”

IF YOU SEE A TAGGED MANATEE - Report the manatee to Georgia DNR by calling 1-800-2-SAVE-ME (800-272-8363). Note the time, date, location, color of the tag and whether any other manatees are present. Do not chase, touch or otherwise harass the manatee, or touch the tag. The tag is harmless to the animal. Monica Ross, research scientist with Sea to Shore Alliance, stressed the tracking device does not impede the animal’s movement or pose a risk of entanglement. The belt, the tether linked to the transmitter and the tag itself are each designed to part easily, Ross said.

The work last week underscored the project’s promise in two ways. First, the aerial team spotted about 40 manatees on Thursday morning, hinting at how many manatees migrate into Georgia from Florida each spring and summer. Also, four of the tagged manatees were tracked into restricted waters at the submarine base, and one was later seen near St. Simons Island. Researchers anticipate others will swim north along the coast, providing even more needed insights into manatee movements in Georgia.
