tTHIS SUMMER HAS BEEN A BUSY ONE! Busy like a bee, I’ve been happily buzzing around, enjoying every moment.

I recently moved to a magical new home. In what seemed like the blink of an eye, my partner Matt and I packed up our belongings, our cat and dog, and headed to our new home in the country. The home is an old stone house originally built in 1859. Sprinkled with unique characteristics and charm inside and out, it’s safe to say I fell in love with the home at first sight. Matt fell in love with the home’s spacious surrounding property. Large trees, rolling hills with a view, and plenty of space for outdoor fun.

When drawing inspiration for our new home, I’ve considered more than just what I see on social media or my Pinterest board. I think of how I want my home to look and feel. Rather than just following the trending styles, I try to stay true to what I like.

Meeting the homeowners who kindly let us share their homes with OUR HOMES, and hearing why they designed or decorated their home the way they did, is truly inspirational. As demonstrated by each of the features in this issue, every home has a different story to tell, each unique to the lives lived by its current owners.

When out and about in local communities, I make sure to stop by stores with furniture and/or finishes to see what else I might find. You might be surprised to discover all the unique and trending items available to you locally.

While summer is the season for some fun in the sun, it’s also going to be the season to get those home projects started and (hopefully) completed!

Enjoy the season!

COLOURS for WELLNESS

We all know that paint is one of the most cost-effective ways to transform a space, but did you know that colour is also a powerful tool that can affect your energy level, feelings, and overall well-being? Welcome the wellness movement into your home with the strategic use of colour to reduce stress and anxiety and create a peaceful atmosphere.

Understanding the psychological associations of various colours and the impact of colour combinations can help you decide what colours to integrate into your home to create a desired atmosphere – a restful bedroom, a comforting kitchen, an inviting gathering space or a serene spa-like bathroom.

Colours are broadly categorized as either warm, cool or neutral. Warm colours like yellow, orange and red are energizing – they can stimulate appetite, increase heart rate and promote creativity. Cool colours like blues, greens and violets are restful, stabilizing and soothing and can slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure and calm the nervous system.

Colours can also appear to either advance towards you or recede away from you, making items and rooms of the same size appear larger or smaller. Warm hues and/or intense colours typically advance towards the eye. Walls painted in a warm colour will decrease the apparent size of the space, which can help create a cosy atmosphere. If you want a space to feel more expansive, painting the walls a cooler or more muted colour will give the appearance of the walls receding. A large sectional sofa upholstered in a warm hue will appear visually more substantial than the same sectional sofa upholstered in a cooler-toned fabric.

The simplicity of a monochromatic scheme (one dominant colour) tends to be very harmonious, whereas a complementary scheme (two colours opposite on the colour wheel) provides more contrast, which can stimulate the senses – so mix in moderation if your goal is to create a calm environment.

Also, be aware that different sources of natural and artificial light can affect how colour is perceived. A north-facing room with less direct natural light will feel quite different than a room drenched in warm natural light with a south-west exposure.

Here are some colours you can use in your home to help promote wellness:

WHITE

White represents purity and freshness and is airy and calming. Imagine a landscape covered in a fresh blanket of snow. There is a reason white is a go-to wall colour as it offers a calm canvas for the other elements in the space.

BROWN

Picture the rich, peaty hue of a freshly ploughed field. Earthy and organic with a certain honesty, brown can help create a space that is grounding and comforting. Worn oak floorboards are a great anchor for a space.

GREEN

There is a reason green saw a resurgence during the pandemic. People spent so much time indoors that they were drawn towards the harmony of nature and healing. Houseplants are a great way to integrate the symbolism green offers into your space – renewal, growth and balance.

BLUE

Blue is another dominant colour found in nature. The blue expanse of the sea and the sky on the horizon evokes feelings of tranquility, calmness and freedom. If you hope to create a soothing atmosphere, consider a soft, muted blue tone.

YELLOW

If you’d like to create an uplifting, inviting, and happy space, incorporate a warm, pale yellow (be careful because a bright or intense hue can be too energizing and not at all calming). Like the sun, yellow is warm, cheerful and optimistic.

As with any home improvement project, the purpose is to create a space that feels good to you, so begin by identifying what that looks and feels like. Your home is your sanctuary and should contribute to your overall well-being, regardless of what colour theory may suggest. OH

Grilled Steak

AND VEGETABLE SALAD

This salad is as fun to make as it is to eat. Fire up the grill and enjoy tender steak slices on a bed of mixed greens, grilled veggies, and tossed with a zesty vinaigrette.

INGREDIENTS

Makes 4-6 Servings

STEAK & MARINADE

1 - 1 ½ lbs flank steak

½ cup olive oil

¼ cup red wine vinegar

¼ cup soy sauce

¼ cup honey

2 cloves garlic, minced

½ tsp black pepper

SALAD

Vegetables of choice, such as corn on the cob, asparagus, tomatoes

1 Tbsp olive oil

Mixed greens (such as arugula and watercress)

¼ cup blue cheese

DRESSING

2 Tbsp Dijon mustard

1 Tbsp honey

1 garlic clove, minced

2 Tbsp red

wine vinegar or lemon juice

¼ tsp sea salt

¼ tsp

black pepper

2 Tbsp olive oil

DIRECTIONS

Before you begin: The steak will require 12-24 hours to marinate. It’s best to marinate the steak the night before.

In a Ziploc bag or bowl, combine all marinade ingredients. Place flank steak in marinade and coat. Let the steak marinate for 12-24 hours in the fridge.

Prepare vegetables for grilling by cutting them into appropriate sizes and brush lightly with olive oil. Remove the flank steak from the marinade. Grill veggies until charred. Cook the flank steak to your liking; for medium-rare, cook the steak for 9-12 minutes, flipping halfway through over medium-high heat. After grilling, allow veggies and steak to rest. Slice steak thinly across the grain.

Prepare the dressing by combining all dressing ingredients and whisking until combined. To assemble the salad, layer the vegetables and steak over a bed of mixed greens. Top with blue cheese crumbles and drizzle the dressing. OH

FARMHOUSE

fun

Just the words, “Christmas tree farm”, spark images of pretty much every holiday Hallmark movie ever made. This makes it no surprise that the idea of sitting on 27 acres of land filled with evergreens, overlooking Lake Ontario, won over grandparents looking to move from their home in Bobcaygeon to Colborne to be closer to family.

wWHILE THE HOUSE that sat on the Christmas tree farm was darling, with a great structure, it needed a complete renovation overhaul. This was where Monique Carroll and Andrew Guthrie of Park Road Design & Build (PRD) swung in for the save.

Leading a full-service design and build company, Monique and Andrew, plus their staff, focus on residential renovations, additions and new custom builds, offering concept designs, architectural permit drawings, interior design, as well as general contracting. Working closely with the couple, PRD and their team helped the

grandparents of four turn the old farmhouse into the home of their dreams.

“The farmhouse was built sometime in the late 1800s and had a few renovations/additions over the years but hadn’t been renovated since the 80s,” says Monique. “It definitely needed a lot of work. In fact, the homeowners initially contemplated tearing it down, but it had such great bones, including the vaulted ceilings and a beautiful kitchen area, so the decision was made for a makeover, inside and out, where both the exterior and interior were renovated,” Monique notes. Park Road Design & Build transformed the 1,600 sq. ft. farmhouse from top to bottom, helping add new life to the space. As the couple are the only two living in the home, not a lot of room was needed, but massive renovations were a must to make the farmhouse both livable and sustainable for years to come.

The three small rooms upstairs were converted into two larger bedrooms, where both now have en suites, and a garage was added to the home, which currently sports a soon-to-be guest bedroom loft. There was

extensive work done in the kitchen and downstairs area, as well as new flooring throughout the entire home. The renovations took eight months in total to complete, and the happy couple moved into their new home in the fall of last year.

“The majority of the walls were removed throughout the house to open it up,” Monique explains. “Originally there was only a powder room upstairs and a full bath on the main floor. We ended up creating two full bathrooms upstairs and a powder room on the main floor. Most of the main-level floors were rotted and had to be gutted and replaced. The kitchen only had partially vaulted ceilings, so we did quite a bit of structural work to open the entire ceiling space in that room.”

hidden playroom is a beloved space for the couple’s four grandchildren.

As the old saying goes, you “get by with a little help from your friends,” and Monique and Andrew had a handful of partners who added the assist when it came to this massive undertaking. Residential designers Renew Design and Construction Drawings helped bring Monique’s vision to life and organized permits. Meanwhile, Southway Home lent a hand by bringing together specific elements to professionally stage the home for photo shoots. Don & Son Building Supplies Ltd. sourced masonry, while A&E Tile and Stone supplied the flooring for all the bathrooms, showers, and mudroom, and JD Cabinetry provided all custom-built cabinets, which were placed in almost every room in the house. Continued on page 40

The home’s staging incorporates modern touches, but is reminiscent of the historic nature of the home as a farmhouse.

While Monique adores the finished product, she loves the uniqueness of the hideaway playroom, built underneath the stairway in the main hall, which has been used quite a bit already by all four of the couple’s grandchildren (all under the age of three). Still, she’s quite fond of how the kitchen turned out. It’s a functional space perfect for entertaining when guests come over. Monique notes the kitchen is a gorgeous space, which also happens to be the one room in the house that needed the most work.

So, how is the couple adjusting to farmhouse living now that most of the renovations are done?

“They are literally living out a real Hallmark Christmas movie,” Monique explains. “They’d never done any farming before, but they fell in love with the property and decided to take over the Christmas tree business on a whim! The previous owner was nice enough to stick around for one season to explain the ins and outs of how it all works and show them the ropes. They have now officially become Christmas tree farmers!” OH

FEED YOUR

Caterpillars

There has been a lot of news recently about planting gardens that attract adult pollinators such as birds, bees, butterflies and flies. By cultivating gardens rich in flowers, shrubs and trees – preferably native species – we contribute to environmental well-being, support our food sources and create habitats for local flora and fauna. This effort helps maintain balance and biodiversity in our own little pieces of paradise.

However, to truly support pollinators, we must go beyond attracting adults and consider the entire life cycle, from egg to larvae to butterfly or moth. Creating habitats conducive to the metamorphosis process is essential with specific plants that serve as egg-laying sites, larval food sources and pupation sites.

What can we do? Firstly, we need to shift our attitude towards having caterpillars in the garden. Caterpillars are the main source of food for many birds. The loss of natural habitats poses a genuine threat to pollinator survival, making the creation of pollinator-friendly environments crucial.

Here are some features that can enhance pollinator habitat:

1 2

ALLOWING A WILD CORNER

Dedicate a small corner of your garden to go “wild.” This will provide a starting point for pollinators to enter and thrive. Another word for this is naturalization – when you take up part of your lawn to grow native plants. To be clear, this isn’t abandonment. Some caretaking is still needed.

DIVERSE NATIVE PLANTS

Incorporate diverse collections of native flowering plants – trees, shrubs and perennials – to ensure a continuous supply of nectar and pollen throughout the growing season.

Monarch Caterpillar on Milkweed

3

NESTING OPPORTUNITIES

Create diverse locations for ground-nesting and wood-nesting pollinators, including areas with discarded vegetation and rotting logs for constructing nests. A lot of caterpillars pupate in the ground, so keep areas under trees open with groundcovers so soils are not compacted. Leaf litter left over the winter is gold for caterpillars and garden beds.

4

PROMINENT PLANTS FOR POLLINATOR LARVAE

Milkweed for Monarchs.

Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) is a larval host for the Columbine Dusky Wing butterfly.

New England Aster (Aster novae-angliae) is a larval host for the Silvery Checkerspot butterfly.

Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is a larval host for the Painted Lady butterfly.

Golden Alexanders (Zizia aurea) and parsley are larval hosts for the Black Swallow Tail butterfly.

Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) and Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium) is a larval host for the Arctic Skipper and the Little Wood Satyr butterflies.

Hackberry Tree (Celtis occidentalis) is a larval host for the Snout Butterfly and the Question Mark butterfly.

Oaks (Quercus). This genus of tree is home to hundreds of different types of caterpillars. It’s a major player for food for the pollinators. Everyone needs an oak on their property!

5

Now that you have all these amazing caterpillars feeding in your garden, I think it goes without saying – make sure you don’t use any kind of chemical pesticides.

6

PLANT CLUSTERS AND AVOID OVER-CLEANING

Plant the pollinator-friendly plants in clusters rather than singly and avoid excessive garden cleanup to provide suitable overwintering spots for pupae.

7 AVOID CHEMICAL PESTICIDES

ATTRACTING OTHER BENEFICIAL INSECTS

A pollinator-friendly garden may attract additional beneficial insects that don’t have caterpillars as a larval stage, including ladybird beetles, dragonflies, sweat bees and honeybees. Moths do have caterpillars and remember to keep outdoor lights off at night to avoid harming nocturnal moths.

Supporting the larvae of pollinators is a collective responsibility that significantly impacts ecosystems and agricultural landscapes. Nurturing these essential life stages ensures the continued success of pollinators, benefiting the environment, agriculture and the overall well-being of all living organisms, including humans. OH

THE PLACE

Open in Lakefield since 2006, Stony Lake Furniture Co. is a destination retail space and interior design studio. While wandering through this lovely store, you’ll discover a variety of home décor items, Farrow & Ball paint and wallpaper, rugs, lighting as well as locally-crafted case goods paired with plush seating from Canada and the U.S. “We believe in the value of investing in furniture that is not only beautiful but also provides enduring comfort and functionality,” says Lisa Besseling, owner and principal designer.

THE SERVICES

Stony Lake Furniture Co. is more than just a retail space. When Lisa took over Stony Lake Furniture Co. in 2010, she continued the fusion of retail and design under one roof. They offer interior design services for projects of all sizes, from small updates such as changing furniture and paint selections, to full renovations and new builds. Lisa applies her wealth of expertise and creativity to every project, helping clients bring their visions to life. “We have the added bonus of having a physical retail location so clients can come and see our style and offerings,” says Lisa.

HOW IT WORKS

The goal when working with Stony Lake Furniture Co. is to make the process as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. “We offer a free discovery meeting either in store or over Zoom to get a sense of the scope of work,” Lisa explains. “From there we’ll suggest what we think is the best approach to the project.” Then, the design and drafting work is done, which is provided to contractors and cabinetmakers. Once the room or home is complete, Lisa and her team return to install furniture and décor. “Sometimes too many cooks in the kitchen isn’t a good thing,” says Lisa. “We add more of a personal approach. We’re small and we like it that way.” OH

COMMUNITY

Working with the surrounding communities and designing for local homeowners in The Kawarthas is a special thing. “We’re lucky enough to meet people when they are embarking on something new and exciting,” says Lisa. Whether it’s a renovation or a new build for someone’s home or cottage, working in The Kawarthas almost always means working at a beautiful location. “The people we deal with are happy and excited.”

If you had the chance to have a new kitchen, how would it be?

So many choices, and so easy to get boggled with all the available ideas. Where would you even start? I recommend these three steps:

1. Gather information. How do you want to use the space? What style do you prefer? How long will you stay in the same home?

2. What’s it worth to you to have the kitchen you want?

3. Find a kitchen designer that gets you. They will help fine tune the information, plug in missing pieces and pull together finish choices and numbers for you.

At this point you should be off to the races and super excited about the project you’re about to undertake. You may still be developing the final look that works best but that’s the really fun part.

The kitchen we’re showing here, although pretty close to the initial drawing, did go through some variations to get it just right, like adding an upper on the window wall and replacing a cabinet with open shelving. Sometimes it comes together quickly, sometimes it takes a bit longer, but as you can see, the results speak for themselves, just perfect!

TIPS FOR STYLING YOUR PATIO BAR CART

The road to patio cocktails is paved with thrilling anticipation, from shopping for supplies to the art of crafting and ending with the highlight –consumption. Often eclipsed however, is the hub of this pseudo leisure sport, the home bar itself. A patio bar cart is the quintessential example of styled storage and is one of the most purposeful and functional additions to your summer evenings.

Here are our top five tips for styling your outdoor sip station:

ELEVATE WITH GAMES

Elevate your cart’s contents by staggering board games beneath the display. This will allow for each item to take its own centre stage and will introduce dimension to the spread. Bonus: an option for some post dinner fun!

FINESSE WITH INGREDIENTS

True, the purpose of your minibar is to (cutely) store all your magic potions and their proper vessels, but who said it had to stop there? Add some colour to your surface by including a dish of common garnishes, such as whole lemons or limes. For something especially seasonal, try a fruit spread alongside a DIY sangria bar!

ADD FRESH FLOWERS

Seldom does a space not improve following the addition of vegetation. A bouquet of flowers or a potted plant intermixed with your barscape can satisfy both the nose and the eyes, while adding dimension in its height, too. Trade secret: Mint will deter insects from your sugary spread while also acting as a garnish to many popular drinks. Cheers to double duty!

LEAVE CHEEKY SIGNAGE

Adorn your carafes with mini chalkboard signage or the like to let guests know what’s on the menu. Go punny with a bar joke, or shoutout a guest of honour with their own special tribute concoction.

KEEP THINGS CHILL

The warmer the weather, the more chilled the drinks must be. If a cooler feels too cluttered in your space, relocate bottles and cans to a more attractive bucket with ice option. Your ice supply will need more frequent replenishing, but your offerings will be on display and ready to quench. OH

to Live A BETTER PLACE

Discovering Westport is kind of like a fairy tale. The quaint, historic village is surrounded by picturesque scenery of both land and water. Located in eastern Ontario, the village is nestled at the base of Foley Mountain and looks out onto 220 kilometres of shoreline along the calming waters of Upper Rideau Lake, connecting to the Rideau waterway. With all the amenities one should need, it’s a town, that when you visit, you never want to leave.

STORY DREW BETH NOBLE | PHOTOGRAPHY MARC FOWLER

wWith easy access to the Upper Rideau Lake, Westport was first established in the 1800s as a mill town. Since then, the village has continued to thrive as a walkable community, maintaining its small-town appeal, yet offering its residents and guests a range of activities and opportunities. Being immersed in the natural setting that it is, there’s no shortage of outdoor fun. Hiking and biking trails, and a sandy beach to enjoy swimming, kayaking or canoeing – the options are endless. The area also has wineries, pubs, bakeries, a vibrant art scene and boutique shops. There’s truly something for everyone.

The small town is also home to Watercolour Westport, the net-zero ready, fossil-fuel free development created by Stephen Rolston, founder of Land Ark Homes. The passion for community and creating a better future drives the hardworking team that creates Watercolour. “Homes are just the way you get people’s hearts,” says Stephen. “It’s communities that knit them together.” Located within steps of

In the busy world we live in today, it’s refreshing to find a place such as Westport. “Given the opportunity to move, people really need to consider the place they live based on their personal enjoyment and the simplification of their lives,” says Wafa. How to Properly Store FRUITS, VEGETABLES & HERBS

With rising food costs, finding ways to make food last longer and reduce food waste is a hot topic. Proper storage of fruits, vegetables and herbs is one of the most effective ways to maintain quality and freshness, and impacts how long your food will last.

Fruits & Vegetables

You might think all fresh produce belongs in the fridge, but this isn’t the case. Some items do better at room temperature, at least until they’re ripe, and some prefer a cool, dark place. And some have even more specific storage tips to keep them fresh longer.

BEST STORED IN THE FRIDGE

Apples, asparagus, green beans, berries, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, citrus, grapes, lettuce/leafy greens, mushrooms, peppers and zucchini.

SPECIAL STORAGE TIPS

Asparagus: Fill a mason jar or container with water, place the asparagus in with the stems down, and cover loosely with a plastic bag.

Berries: Wash, dry and remove any mouldy or soft berries before placing in a plastic container lined with paper towel or a clean towel. Leave the lid cracked.

Lettuce and leafy greens: There are two recommended methods for storage of greens. Either store them unwashed in the original container topped with a paper towel or a clean tea towel to absorb any excess moisture, or store in a salad spinner after it’s been washed and spun. Discard the excess water and cover with the lid.

Mushrooms: Store them in the packaging they came in, or in a paper bag.

BEST STORED ON THE COUNTER TO RIPEN, AND THEN MOVED TO THE FRIDGE FOR LONGER STORAGE

Avocado, bananas, kiwi, mango, melons, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums and tomatoes.

BEST STORED IN A COOL, DARK, DRY PLACE

Garlic, onions, potatoes, squash and sweet potatoes.

SPECIAL STORAGE TIPS

Don’t store your onions (or bananas) near your potatoes and sweet potatoes. Onions and bananas release a gas called ethylene, which can cause potatoes to spoil quickly, since they’re sensitive to ethylene.

Herbs

Similar to fruits and vegetables, fresh herbs will last longer if they’re stored properly.

BEST STORED IN THE FRIDGE

Cilantro, dill, mint, oregano, parsley and rosemary.

SPECIAL STORAGE TIPS

There are two suggested methods to store herbs. With both methods, wash, dry and trim a bit of the stems first. Then you can either store them like asparagus, in a jar or container with water, and cover loosely with a plastic bag, or wrap them in a damp paper towel and store in a plastic bag. OH

Essential Kitchen Items for Baking the PERFECT SUMMER PIE

You can turn baking into an interactive endeavour with your partner, kids and friends, or save it for a day when you’d like some solo time to get creative in the kitchen. Either way, you’ll want to make sure you have all the things you need to whip up a delicious dessert that’s good enough to win top prize at the local fair!

Start with an apron.

Chances are you’re going to get flour and a few squished blueberries on your shirt. Select an apron that has utility pockets for your kitchen accessories, like a handy dishtowel for quick cleanups and a whisk, spatula or wooden spoon. Take your favourite family recipe out of your card box, consult a cookbook, search online, poll the audience, phone a friend – basically ensure you have a plan ready for your pie.

Let’s be honest, pies are always a good idea! With a variety of homegrown fruits like strawberries, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches and early apples available throughout the summer months, fruit pies are truly a seasonal luxury in Ontario.

in the kitchen

Next, account for all the tools you’ll use throughout the baking process.

Essential kitchen items to keep in your pantry include a good set of stainless steel mixing bowls for combining pie crust and filling ingredients, a stand mixer for effortlessly creating the perfect crust, measuring cups and spoons, a colander for washing your fruit and a reliable rolling pin to smooth out your pastry dough.

Once you’re ready to assemble the pie, choose a dish to bake

it in.

With so many interesting options on the market now, you can use a traditional white ceramic dish, a glass dish or even one with a pop of colour and a matching bird that’s used to let the steam out while your pie is baking. If you’re testing a new recipe for something like key lime pie bars, opt for a non-stick pan that will easily release your treat! When the dish is lined with crust, the filling is poured and you’re ready to secure the top, try using a pastry crimper and cookie cutters to design the aesthetic. There are lots of tutorials online that show how to make lattice tops and custom cutouts that will transform your pie into a work of art. A sharp knife and pastry brush will prove beneficial to have on hand too. Many seasoned pastry chefs also recommend using a pie shield for baking, which is a thin ring placed around the edges that prevents the pastry from browning too fast.

Lastly, set your kitchen timer to pie o’clock, Remove your pie from the oven safely using an appropriately themed oven mitt, and get ready to enjoy the fruits of your labour! OH

EVERY CORNER tells a story

THE SOUL OF THIS MAGNIFICENT SIXBEDROOM COTTAGE RESONATES WITH TREASURED MEMORIES OF FAMILY, FRIENDS AND VOYAGES ACROSS THE SEA. “EVERY CORNER TELLS A STORY AND WE’LL CREATE MORE MEMORIES

AS TIME GOES ON,” SAYS COLLEEN KIEFER.

Welcoming guests into the home, the stunning grand entrance features custom finishes.

CColleen and her husband Siegfried love to host and entertain. “We enjoy gathering and inviting people into our home. We have been blessed with a wonderful family and many fabulous friends,” says Colleen.

Situated on Crowe Lake near Marmora, this two-storey home built by Discovery Dream Homes is lovingly personalized with art, family heirlooms and souvenirs. Small circular mats, woven by women in Rwanda, add texture and interest to the wall in the TV room. “We found those in Africa. We trekked with gorillas and chimpanzees and visited elephant orphanages,” says Siegfried. A watercolour painting of the couple’s two children hangs nearby, a gift from Colleen’s mother.

Bronze ducks roosting on the dining room buffet are reminiscent of their trip to the Bay of Fundy. They mounted the ducks on a rock they found on the shores of New Brunswick. “On many occasions, you will find a mom and her ducklings resting on a rock that protrudes from the water shoreline at our cottage,” says Colleen. “This piece provides wonderful memories of our East coast trip and our lake view.”

BELOW: The kitchen’s light colour palette includes warm hints of brass, while the Blue Star gas range adds a subtle touch of colour. OPPOSITE, TOP RIGHT: The living area is decorated with art, family heirlooms and souvenirs collected from family vacations. BOTTOM: The home’s layout makes it easy to spend time with loved ones when they visit.

The couple, now retired, divide their time between Calgary, and Crowe Lake. Colleen was born in Tweed and spent her early years working as a registered nurse in Toronto while Siegfried hails from Calgary where he was the chief executive officer of Canadian Utilities Ltd.

After years of renting cottages and then living in a small home on their property, the Kiefers decided it was time to build their new house, which they completed earlier this year. “We were so pleased with the workmanship and the people who took the time and care to do things properly,” says Siegfried. Paul VandenTillaart, owner of P.M. VandenTillaart Construction Ltd. spearheaded the project while Eric Carnrite of Carnrite Carpentry Ltd. supervised the site. “Paul was wonderful to work with, straightforward, honest and hardworking,” says Siegfried. “We appreciated Eric’s creativity, patience and attention to detail.”

Colleen meticulously drafted detailed drawings of each room to illustrate her design. Sandy Sillaots, owner of Hickory Lane Kitchens, brought Colleen’s vision to life. “I loved working with Sandy,” says Colleen. “She really listened to me and understood what I wanted. Her company completed all the millwork and was absolutely amazing.”

An essential component of the Kiefers’ design is wheelchair accessibility. Curbless showers, an open floor plan, ramps and a specially-equipped bedroom on the main level ensure ease of movement throughout the home. The bathroom has tilted mirrors and a lower vanity and toilet. “We have relatives who require accessibility so it was important to incorporate these features,” Colleen says.

The main level affords stunning views of the lake and surrounding woodland. A spacious sunroom glows with mellow, natural light streaming through towering, wall-to-wall windows from Pella. “They are as big as we could get without going commercial,” says Siegfried.

ABOVE: On a cool summer evening or fall afternoon, the unique propane stove provides warmth in the spacious sunroom, making it a very cosy place to relax.

RIGHT: The sunroom’s large windows and vaulted ceiling help create a bright and open space, while inviting seating and soft textiles bring comfort to the space.

A unique propane stove, by Friendly Fires, nestles in a stone alcove, gently warming the room on a cool evening. Built-in shelves flank the alcove, perfect for displaying keepsakes and art. The engineered hickory floors throughout the home were sourced through Monaghan Lumber Specialties

The kitchen is a study in contrast. A wormy maple hutch cleverly hides the fridge and freezer while white Ironsbridge Cambria quartz counters by SCF Countertops and cabinets by Hickory Lane Kitchens lighten the space. Antique brass fixtures, by Desco Plumbing and Heating Supply Inc., accentuate a creamy Kohler cast iron sink. “I love brass because it ages, it’s not perfect, it tells a story,” says Colleen. A Blue Star gas range and Miele professional dishwasher make entertaining a breeze.

A charming barrel-shaped hallway, trimmed with white shiplap and dark pine arches, leads to the primary suite, laundry and tub rooms. Iconic Ryttenberg white globes by Olde Brick Lighting softly illuminate the hall. A colourful stained glass mural steals the show in the tub room. “We found it years ago in Stirling at an antique shop. It belonged to a monastery in Detroit,” explains Colleen. A delightful clawfoot soaker tub sits in the middle of the room overlooking a relaxing view of the lake. Kirkland Plumbing & Mechanical Services completed all plumbing.

ABOVE: Perfect for a summer evening, the screened porch has an exterior fireplace, large sectional sofa, barbecue and outdoor dining table. LEFT: The games room is a mixture of eclectic art and entertainment. It’s a room for everyone to enjoy.

FAR LEFT: The tub room is for a relaxing, peaceful soak. LEFT: The barrel-shaped hallway leads to the primary suite, laundry and tub room, all separate from the main living area. BOTTOM LEFT: While each bedroom is slightly different, design characteristics are carried throughout.

BOTTOM MIDDLE & RIGHT: Warm wooden finishes and antique décor complement the stone wall in the primary bedroom and en suite.

In the primary suite, panoramic windows offer a sweeping view of the lake. A freestanding antique mirror from Jillian Antiques & Things adds interest and an earthy feel to the room. A striking stone accent wall, by Masonal Stone Inc., encloses the bedroom and en suite. Small triangular stained glass, salvaged from an uncle’s attic, decorates a window in the water closet. A stately built-in hutch provides ample storage in the en suite for linens and family heirlooms like Siegfried’s mother’s exquisite silver teapot. The couple found furnishings locally at Bennett’s Furniture & Mattresses and Shop The Lake

One of Siegfried’s favourite spots is the games room. Chock full of fun, this area is an eclectic mix of entertainment and art. Siegfried’s audio equipment harkens back to his teens while a pool table, shuffleboard and games table offer endless options for amusement. A remarkable wooden world map spans an entire wall. Crafted by Enjoy The Wood, this Ukrainian company has a captivating back story. “I absolutely love this map. It was made by a Ukrainian gentleman who used to be homeless,”

says Colleen. The island/bar and adjacent counter are topped with colourful fusion granite, by Delray Granite

An elegant hickory staircase (Monaghan Lumber Specialties), trimmed with hammered steel spindles, by Hammered Out Fabrications, unites the second floor. Four guest suites and a media room, ideal for family gatherings, are contained on this level. Siegfried practices his swing in the golf simulator while others enjoy playing soccer or baseball on the big screen.

As the sinking summer sun creates a kaleidoscope of colours over Crowe Lake, the Kiefers look forward to visits with their children, Reegan, and Stefan and his wife Maegan. “To us, family is everything and we are so happy we can share this home with them,” says Colleen. OH

FAR LEFT: Bright and spacious, this elegant guest bathroom allows visitors to feel right at home. LEFT: Matching twin beds, with playful finishes and pops of colour make this children’s room a cottage delight. BOTTOM LEFT: There’s a charming bedroom for everyone.

BOTTOM MIDDLE: A large window with a built-in bench overlooks the green treetops and floods the upstairs hallway with natural light. BOTTOM RIGHT: Hidden behind a secret entry, the golf simulator is great fun when entertaining family and friends.

key limePIE BARS

You’ve got to try these creamy, tart and sweet bars, and celebrate a bite-size taste of summer. These bars have a buttery graham-cracker crust layered with creamy key lime filling and topped with zesty whipped cream!

RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JENELLE MCCULLOCH

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: The bars will require four hours of cooling time and are best if given time to firm up in the fridge after assembling. This is a great makeahead dessert option!

Ingredients

CRUST

1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs

6 Tbsp butter, unsalted and melted

FILLING

5 large egg yolks

2 tsp key lime zest

²/³ cup key lime juice

1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk

WHIPPED CREAM TOPPING

1 ½ cups heavy cream

¼ cup powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

Lime zest

Directions

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line an 8-by-8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some to hang over the sides. This will make it easy to take the bars out of the pan. In a bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs and butter until combined. Press mixture into the prepared baking pan and bake for 10 minutes in the oven, or until slightly golden.

Prepare the filling by mixing the egg yolks, lime zest, lime juice and sweetened condensed milk.

Pour the filling onto the crust and smooth the top. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the filling is mostly set. The centre will be a little wobbly. Let cool at room temperature, then move to the fridge to set for four hours.

Once the bars are cooled, whip the heavy cream with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Add powdered sugar and vanilla. Whip until combined and medium peaks form. Spread the whipped cream on top of the key lime bars. Top with lime zest. Place back in the fridge to set for another 30 minutes. Slice into bars and enjoy! OH
