At the heart of the design is a welcoming curved hood vent, inspired by nature’s archways. “The arch isn’t just aesthetic,” Gabrielle notes. “It symbolizes an invitation to creativity with cooking rituals and overall inspiration.”

EACH REGIONAL EDITION OF OUR HOMES MAGAZINE IS UNIQUELY SPECIAL, showcasing a diverse range of homes, inspiring spaces and creative solutions that never fail to leave a lasting impression.
In this seasonal issue, we take you on a journey through homes across the region, showcasing something for every taste and style. We also shine a spotlight on the talented local businesses and professionals who bring these spaces to life with their expertise and creativity.
EA key theme that emerges throughout this issue is the undeniable value of working with a designer to help craft the environment you’ve always envisioned. From a cosy suburban Toronto home (Page 60) and a family-friendly space in East York (Page 92) to an expansive King City property (Page 36), one thing is clear: each home has been thoughtfully transformed into a beautiful, functional space that perfectly reflects the needs and personality of its owner, thanks to the expertise of a skilled designer. They’ve cultivated strong relationships with top-tier trades and suppliers, bringing the best in quality, craftsmanship and style.
Whether your home is large or small, a designer can help you unlock its full potential and create a space that enhances both your lifestyle and well-being. And don’t be intimidated by the thought of a complete overhaul – many designers are open to smaller projects, especially those that help balance out their schedules between larger commissions. You don’t have to wait for the ‘perfect’ time to reach out. Designers are eager to share their expertise and help you make the most of your space, no matter the size.
As we embrace the holiday season, we hope this issue sparks new ideas and inspiration for your home in the coming year. Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful, peaceful holiday season, filled with warmth and new possibilities for your home!

DEPARTMENTS
TRENDS to try
Are current design trends right for you? It’s important to approach trendy design elements critically to evaluate if you like the trend enough to live with it for a while and whether it can be integrated successfully with your existing design, furnishings, architecture and site. For example, curved archways became very popular but were sometimes incorporated into spaces incongruent with the existing architecture, which caused a visual disconnect.
Here are some current themes in the industry – discern for yourself whether you’d like to give them a try.
MICRO/SECONDARY DWELLINGS
There are different reasons you might consider a secondary dwelling (if your property allows it). Affordability is a primary motive, as rental income can help pay your mortgage. Another popular arrangement is independent, intergenerational living – whether due to health circumstances or lifestyle choices. There are many creative designs to maximize efficiency in a small footprint.
BROWN
Possibly in response to environmental issues and sustainability or the cycle of design, shades of brown have seen a resurgence. Varying from camel to deep
chocolate, the rich, earthy hues offer a grounding, comforting and calming effect in a space. You can incorporate the colour through freestanding furniture, upholstery pieces, hardwood flooring, millwork or wall coverings and paint.
TERRACOTTA TILE
We’ve been seeing the return of terracotta tile for a while. Perhaps one could argue that it is best suited to Spanish and Mediterranean architecture. However, the earthy palette is versatile enough to integrate successfully into farmhouse and cottage styles. Terracotta tiles were traditionally handmade and sun-dried, known as “baked earth,” but even contemporary versions add instant old-world charm to a space while imbuing natural character.
CHUNKY GROUT
Grout lines are often minimized to avoid scrubbing and cleaning. However, some tiles, such as terracotta, should be installed with substantial grout lines to look authentic. Thicker grout lines are also used to create visual interest in custom tile layouts, where a larger band of grout delineates horizontally or vertically. The options for a unique pattern are endless, as long as your installer is on board!
TRIM & DOORS
There is a shift from white painted trim and doors. You will see a lot of solid-wood trim and doors stained to match the hardwood flooring. This is a classic and timeless approach and can be achieved successfully in modern and traditional spaces. An alternative is to paint trim and doors in a contrasting colour to the walls. A few years ago, we began to see subtle versions of this where light walls were paired with trim and doors a few shades darker in a greige hue. As more and more interiors are moving away from the all-white palette into more colour, contrasting trim is a way to add personality and impact, and we are seeing full-blown colour on mouldings, trims and doors. Tip: Try it in one room to see if you like it before you commit to a larger open-concept space!
TEXTURED WALLS & CEILINGS
The application/installation of Venetian plaster, lime wash, Roman clay, woven wall coverings and wood cladding adds interest to walls and ceilings instead of plain, painted drywall. It is important to have a professional installer for some of these materials and finishes (or a seasoned DIYer) – for example, hanging wall coverings on the ceiling is no simple task!
ARTISANAL
A downfall in design over the past couple of decades has been the homogeny of developments, easily replicated viral “of the moment” looks and the availability of mass-produced items. Although there are benefits to the above, the result can be that homes lack differentiation and look the same as the next. However, there is a real focus on personalization in design and this can be achieved by sourcing artisanal goods. Skilled craftspeople use traditional means and methods to create bespoke pieces in small batches or one-offs. This adds character and charm to your space while supporting the good people preserving uniquely human skills. OH

WINTER HIBERNATION
8 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME COSIER FOR THE SEASON
As the days grow shorter and the temperature drops, there’s nothing quite like transforming your home into a warm, inviting winter haven. Whether you’re settling in by the fire, enjoying a hot cup of cocoa or hosting a gathering, here are some of my favourite ways to create the perfect atmosphere and embrace the beauty of the season.
1. Make An Impression With Your Entryway
Set the tone for the rest of your home and greet your guests with warmth from the moment they arrive on your doorstep. Extending the cosiness to the outside with a welcoming wreath or swag, a seasonal doormat and a few decorative touches can make a big impression.
2. Incorporate Natural Elements
Embrace the beauty of winter by bringing the outdoors in. Pine cones, evergreen branches and berries make for stunning and simple centrepieces and decorative touches. Display these natural elements in vases or as part of a table arrangement to evoke a sense of seasonal charm and warmth.
3. Create A Cosy Nook
Create a designated corner in your home that invites relaxation. Choose a comfortable chair, drape a soft throw over it and add a side table with a warm reading lamp. The perfect hideaway for reading, sipping a cocktail or simply unwinding after a long day!
Continued on page 34
4. Seasonal Scents
Introduce a variety of scents that evoke the winter season like cinnamon, pine and vanilla. Swap out everyday products like hand soaps for those with seasonal scents and for a natural fragrant infusion, simmer a pot of water with cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange peels on the stove.
5. Personalize With Seasonal Décor
The holidays are all about creating special moments and memories. Add personalized touches to make your space unique to you, such as family photos and personal ornaments. Switching your artwork for the season can also provide a refreshing change and make your home feel more festive.
6. Colour Palette
Lean into a warmer colour palette for winter. Deep rich tones like oxblood and burgundy feel festive and inviting for the holidays, without feeling overdone. These colours can be incorporated through textiles, décor and even wall art to create a cohesive and cosy look throughout your space.
7. Embrace Layered Textiles
Think plush throws, soft blankets and extra cushions. Opt for materials like wool, cashmere, velvet and faux fur to enhance the warmth and cosiness of your space. Layered rugs can add texture and warmth to your floors, making every step feel soft and luxurious.
8. Enhance Your Fireplace Setup
Make the fireplace the focal point of your living area. Arrange seating to face the fireplace and include a basket of logs and kindling for a touch of rustic charm. If you don’t have a working fireplace, you can achieve a similar effect with a cluster of candles or a decorative electric fireplace.
With these simple tips, you can easily transform your home into a winter haven perfect for quiet moments and intimate conversation. Embrace the winter season by making your home a sanctuary of warmth and comfort. Happy hibernating. OH
A Referral TO REMEMBER
FFOR DESIGNERS, A REFERRAL CARRIES EXTRA WEIGHT,
serving as both a trusted endorsement and a responsibility to deliver exceptional work, ensuring the referrer doesn’t regret their recommendation. So, when one of Jennifer Ellah’s clients referred her to work on a home in a sprawling King City neighbourhood, she understood the importance of the task.
Fortunately, Jennifer – owner of Interiors By Jennifer Ellah – has built her business on referrals. “Most of my clients come from word of mouth,” she says. “One of my clients whose lake house I designed in Fort Erie was so pleased with the outcome that he recommended me to this
homeowner, telling him, ‘You need Jennifer!’ ”
The veteran Niagara-based designer was tasked with bringing warmth and personality to the homeowner’s 15,000 sq. ft. five-bedroom, eightbathroom, six-car-garage home. The homeowner, who purchased the home sight unseen in 2021, had spent the first few years creating the outdoor environment he envisioned, and was ready to tackle the interior. “The project seemed daunting, but I was excited to see what we could do,” she says, adding that the home wasn’t entirely a blank slate, there were existing pieces the client wanted to include in the design. “The goal was to create a mix of unique materials and elements so it would be timeless and eclectic.”
Dramatic coffered ceilings enhanced with metallic wallpaper create an elegant tone in the home’s formal dining area. All wallpaper hung by Norman Chambers from Bamboo Designs. RIGHT: The rounded front foyer acts as a central hub, seamlessly connecting every area of the home.
home & designer
Where to begin with such a large project? Jennifer says the design was inspired by the homeowner’s personal preferences, incorporating elements such as burl wood and a rich colour palette of blues, rusts and caramel.
“I am a wood person, I love the natural tones and textures of wood, especially burl wood, and that was captured in a way that I really enjoy,” says the homeowner. Burl wood details and sumptuous alabaster weave their way through the home, creating a cohesive aesthetic. “We tailored the home around the homeowner – warm, inviting and a place he wants to come home to,” says Jennifer. “The house is amazing, and I added to its beauty by adding colour and texture. We made it unique by adding wallpaper, wood on the ceilings, lush area rugs and custom drapes, incorporating different fabrics like velvet, bouclé, as well as leather and cowhide.”
“At first Jennifer said it would take about a year to complete everything, but I did not want to be inconvenienced with my daily life, so I said six months max or even three months! But after a while I was comfortable and understood the process. She would give me two or three options for each element, and I would choose the one I liked best. It worked really well.”
To establish a refined foundation and set the tone for the entire home, Jennifer collaborated with Melissa Rey from Interiors By Better Shade to design custom window coverings that add rich tones and a sense of grounding to the expansive space.
A few steps from the front entryway, a round-shaped foyer is swathed in Benjamin Moore Old Navy and foreshadows the eclectic space to come, with a gilded ceiling, crystal chandelier, earthy cowhide rug and clean-lined glass table. The main entryway area provides a clear sight-line through the home to the two-storey windows that frame the formal living room leading to the kitchen area and bring in stunning views of the pool and rolling pastures beyond. To the left of the entry is the homeowner’s sizeable office, and to the right is one of two mainfloor powder rooms and a comfortable, elegant living area with a fireplace and a creatively-curated selection of the homeowner’s eclectic art. The kitchen is classic, timeless and functional, with an oversize island, ample seating and high-end appliances to complete the luxury look. “We basically left the kitchen as it was, adding a few décor items to warm up the space,” says Jennifer. Deep coffered ceilings create a dramatic and refined space. From the kitchen, a light-filled hallway leads to a chic and functional laundry room, featuring another custom roman blind that elevates the space. To the right of the kitchen, a pristine prep area pairs sleek understated details with a charming gold-accented backsplash tile, providing a satisfying bit of sparkle and visual interest. The metallic theme continues subtly into the adjoining dining room, with gold-gilded wallpaper on the ceiling, creating an opulent sheen.
In the centre of the home, a grand staircase leads to the upper level, with two-tone custom drapes from Interiors By Better Shade adding visual interest with a colourblocking strategy that expertly provides perspective and personality to the expansive window. A custom roman shade was designed for the challenging oversize window. “It is one of a kind,” says Jennifer.

Dividing the large space into three separate sections and adding a custom bookcase gives it character and visual interest. Bar stools are from Interiors by Better Shade. home & designer
The primary bedroom is large but cosy, with deep coffered ceilings, a crystal chandelier, alabaster side table lamps and a lush Mongolian sheepskin bench. Leather chairs in front of the large window highlight the space and offer a spot to sit and take in the gorgeous pool
and pasture beyond.
In addition to five bedrooms, the upper level features the most challenging space Jennifer faced, an expansive area above the home’s five-car garage that includes a large breezeway and three distinct spaces. “It was basically a blank canvas. I had to break it up into zones – a boardroom separated by a custom bookcase created by the talented Kris Livingston of Livingston Home Solutions that followed the contours of the room, an area to relax at a waterfall bar to have a drink, and a room with a large sectional for unwinding and watching TV.”
This unique area is now the homeowner’s favourite place to unwind. The boardroom space features a large table from Millbank Family Furniture, eight low-profile leather chairs from Boss Leather Furniture and a cream textured area rug from Elte. “I spend a lot of time upstairs reading technical papers in the sitting room area, it is a comfortable space where I feel at home.”
On the same level, the primary suite is serene and natural, featuring alabaster side lamps and a plush Mongolian sheepskin bench from CB2. Custom cream bouclé floor-to-ceiling wall panels behind the bed give the room texture and visual interest. “They really warm up the space!” says Jennifer.
Just outside the primary suite, a stunning wood-block wall feature was handmade by Livingston Home Solutions and composed of more than 2,500 individual square cut pieces of wood in varying depths. “It is truly a work of art,” says Jennifer. “Each block was stained and finished by hand.”

The lower level is casual and refined, primed for intimate get-togethers and celebrations with family and friends. A large, dark wood bar area is highlighted with stools from Interiors By Better Shade and bold, modern light fixtures. A workout area, spa room, theatre room and pool table area round out this functional, beautiful lower level. Black-and-white family photos framed by Field of Dreams Gallery add warmth and personalize the space.
Jennifer says the homeowner was a pleasure to work with and helped make the project the success it is. “He is very decisive; he could easily visualize ideas I presented and has a great sense of humour!” And the homeowner clearly reciprocates – the duo is currently collaborating on design details of his cottage and more, inevitably ensuring more genuine referrals. “It’s always a risk to connect with someone new to work on your home. They might be more focused on their own artistic vision and less open to your input,” says the homeowner. “But, our personalities matched well, she was flexible, and I felt open to give my opinions to create a space that represents me well.” OH

Your WINTER GARDEN
Winter can be as long as six months in parts of northern Ontario or four months in southern Ontario. Either way, winter takes up a good portion of our year, so it’s good garden planning to incorporate elements that add winter interest.
Just because our gardens are dormant in colder months doesn’t mean it can’t offer colour, texture and structure even in the heart of winter. A winter garden can transform your landscape into a yearround place of beauty.
CREATE GOOD BONES
Good bones in a garden are important at any time of year, but especially important in the winter when the structural elements of the garden take centre stage. Without the distraction of lush foliage and beautiful flowers, the garden’s design becomes more apparent. This makes it crucial to focus on the layout and form of the garden. Pathways, stone walls and garden ornaments should be strategically placed to guide the eye and provide focal points.
Obelisks, trellises and arbours, even when bare of vines, can create interesting silhouettes against the winter sky or shadows on the snow.

SHRUBS & TREES
The foundation of any winter garden lies in the careful selection of plants that are either evergreen or have striking winter interest. Evergreens, when grouped or used as hedging, can define spaces, create microclimates and shelter your feathered friends. Height is another important consideration. Incorporating vertical elements, such as tall shrubs or small trees, adds dimension to the garden. Evergreen plants, such as cedar, pine, boxwood and yew retain their foliage throughout the year, providing muchneeded colour and structure. Deciduous trees and shrubs with interesting bark, branching patterns or perennials with interesting seed pods are good candidates for a winter garden. The red or yellow stems of dogwood provide a stark contrast against the winter snow, while the peeling bark of birch or Paperbark Maple adds texture and visual intrigue.
GRASSES & LIGHTS
Ornamental grasses can provide great winter interest not only with their form, but they create the element of movement as the wind blows through them. With the shorter days and longer nights of winter, lighting plays a crucial role in the winter garden. Wellplaced twinkle lights can transform the garden, highlighting key features and creating a magical atmosphere. Solar-powered lights are an energy-efficient option, though their effectiveness can be limited in areas with prolonged overcast skies or a lot of snow. LED lights, on the other hand, provide a reliable source of illumination, don’t use a lot of energy and are available in a range of colours to suit different garden styles.
Don’t forget winter containers. With some evergreen branches, colourful twigs, dried seed pods and a set of twinkle lights, you have a miniature winter landscape in a container at the front entrance to provide beauty and light every time you enter your house.
MAINTENANCE
Maintaining a winter garden requires less effort than a summer one, but it is not without its tasks. Regularly clearing pathways of snow and ice is essential for safety and to keep the garden accessible. Pruning should be done judiciously, particularly for evergreens, to maintain their shape and encourage healthy growth. If your area is subject to heavy snow loads, tying up cedars will help prevent them from splaying open. You also might need to shake off the snow from weighted-down branches. Mulching around the base of plants can help protect roots from extreme cold and frost heave.
VISITORS
Winter gardens are also an opportunity to attract wildlife. Bird feeders and water features can provide food and hydration when natural resources are scarce, making your garden a haven for local wildlife. Look for a small water heater in your birding or online store that keeps water in a birdbath from freezing.
A winter garden offers beauty and interest during a season when most gardens are in hibernation. By carefully selecting plants, focusing on structure and form, incorporating thoughtful lighting and maintaining the garden with care, you can create an outdoor space that remains vibrant and inviting year round. Whether blanketed in snow or frosted with ice, a welldesigned winter garden will ensure you have beauty in the face of winter’s chill. OH

THE STORES
At The Millionaire’s Daughter, the philosophy centres on providing variety and accessibility. “We feature a diverse selection of furniture pieces and accessories at various price points, ensuring that there’s something for everyone,” says Maureen. “Our expansive showrooms have more than 30,000 square feet of combined space, filled with one-of-a-kind items arranged in ever-changing vignettes showcasing modern and vintage treasures.” Remarkably, the store sells the equivalent of seven homes’ worth of furniture each week. “We believe every piece of furniture has a story, and we love connecting those stories with new owners,” says Maureen. “We love meeting people and seeing their excitement when they find the perfect item at a great deal.” This passion drives The Millionaire’s Daughter team to deliver exceptional service, ensuring every customer feels valued and supported during their shopping journey.
Inventory is regularly updated, ensuring a fresh selection of beautiful pieces that reflect current styles and timeless designs. “Our goal is to make consignment shopping accessible and enjoyable for everyone,” says Maureen. Knowledgeable staff are always on hand to help shoppers navigate the store, offering personalized recommendations and insights into the unique stories behind each item. “I love hearing our customers’ stories about their homes and how our pieces fit into their lives. It’s a beautiful cycle of connection.” OH
It’s my absolute pleasure to feature this spectacular kitchen in this month’s issue. You may recognize it from a feature article in OUR HOMES that came out mid-summer (recommended reading). The entire home is epic. I’m going to take this opportunity to share some of the more intricate design details, and oh my, there are so many!
The big players: stunning 48" Blue Star range, 36" subzero paneled fridge and 36" paneled freezer. Notice the substantial handcast pulls — just beautiful. (Side note: speed oven, fridge drawers and a 84" tall paneled subzero wine column are all living in the pantry behind the range wall.) TV over the glass doors. The interior of this cabinet is wormy maple, same as the island. In the island is a pull-out stand mixer and diagonally
separated utensil inserts in the drawers for storing long items. That’s a coffee bar located between the fridge and freezer. The top drawer is divided into custom sizes for coffee pucks, tea and other coffee bar do-dads. Unfortunately there’s only a peek of the platter storage to the right of the freezer in this photo, home to heirlooms and entertaining size dishes.
Just a quick note about finish details before I run out of room — the wood is wormy maple and is repeated throughout the home. The soft white painted cabinets repeat the wall colour. The quartz top is also the backsplash. The island quartz is thicker than the perimeter at 2" and…I’m out of room. A big thank you to wonderful clients!
Festive AND FUNCTIONAL DINING ROOMS
The dining area is somewhat of a conundrum. In many newer homes, it has been swallowed up by the open-concept main floor, with cooking, dining and living combined. Meanwhile, in older homes, the formal dining room often goes unused except for the occasional birthday, anniversary or holiday, when it gets dusted off and dressed to impress. I love the indulgence of a dedicated, stylish dining area, both in terms of the space itself and all that it brings. Whether yours is a dedicated room or a designated nook, here are some tips to ensure it’s ready for company, both during the holidays and every other day of the year!

DINING ROOM LAYOUTS FOR A FUNCTIONAL AND FABULOUS SPACE
A great dining area starts with the layout, to ensure the room can handle the hustle and bustle while still providing a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. If yours is an open-plan home, position your dining table in a way that naturally flows from the kitchen or living area. This setup allows for easy movement between cooking and socializing, ensuring you can stay engaged with guests while preparing meals.
In homes with separate dining rooms, focus on creating a balanced space. Place the dining table centrally, allowing enough room around it for chairs to be pulled out comfortably. Ensure there is ample space to accommodate traffic, especially if the space will include a buffet or serving area.
A rectangular or oval table can accommodate more guests, while a round table can create a more intimate setting. If you frequently host large gatherings, consider an extendable table or add a second smaller table to accommodate extra guests.
A sideboard or buffet table along one wall can serve as a dedicated area for food and drinks. This keeps the main dining table clutter-free and allows guests to help themselves without disrupting the flow of conversation. And when you’re not hosting, it serves as storage space. Place chairs or benches around the table with a mix of seating options to cater to different preferences and to create a more dynamic and inviting arrangement. If space allows, create a separate seating area with comfortable chairs or a small sofa for guests to relax before or after the meal.
FOCUS!
A well-chosen focal point not only draws the eye but also sets the tone and mood, making it a more enjoyable place for meals and gatherings. It can help define the style and personality of the space, whether it’s modern, traditional or eclectic. To create an effective focal point, start by identifying the most prominent area in the room, such as the wall facing the entrance or the ceiling above the dining table. Consider adding a bold piece of art, which is a wonderful way to add non-committal colour and a dramatic effect. Simply swapping out the artwork can transform the entire room’s ambience when you’re ready for a change.
I love the element of surprise in a room, so think beyond the usual, like a bold ceiling. Draw the eye upward with an eye-catching colour or a graphic paper to add texture and dimension. Incorporating architectural elements such as coffered ceilings, exposed beams or tray ceilings can also add a sense of grandeur and elegance.
Balance is key, so ensure that the focal point complements the overall décor without overwhelming it.
LIGHTING
Lighting has a three-fold purpose in the dining area: to illuminate for function, to act as a focal point and to set the mood. In this space, it can be bright and joyful, warm and romantic, dark and dramatic, or it can alternate between all three, depending on the function. For this reason, dimmers and layers of lighting are a must.
A statement chandelier or pendant light above the dining table serves as a focal point, adding a touch of elegance and festivity. Wall sconces or floor and table lamps can provide additional illumination, highlighting different areas of the room and adding depth. Candles or string lights added to the tabletop or buffet create a cosy, enchanting atmosphere.
Whether hosting large gatherings on festive occasions or casual everyday dinners, having a dedicated dining area also helps to carve out a time and a place to indulge in good food and great company, without any distractions. OH

STORY GINA MAKKAR
PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN TRIGIANI
hHomeowner Anne Marie Chlorakos wanted to trade the dated, ordinary aesthetic of her suburban home for an update that reflects her family’s changing needs. With the help of Divya Kambhoj, owner of Ivish Interiors, the redesign of the main floor and primary bedroom resulted in a beautiful, functional living space. “I wanted to refurnish the rooms on my main floor and decorate the space,” she says. “We moved into our house over 10 years ago and had just furnished the house with furniture from other homes. I wanted to update and refresh the look and have furniture that worked better.”
Anne Marie lives with her two teenage sons and wanted the home’s design to incorporate the navigation of her oldest son’s wheelchair without constraint and provide a space where he could comfortably hang out with friends.
Before starting any new project, Divya pores over images to help clients focus on what they truly like. “I work to make sure that what I am designing is about my client’s style, what their preferences are, and what they are looking for,” she says. “In this case, I considered how they were looking to use the space and their current challenges.” Continued on page 62
home & designer
Each project begins with a presentation day, including a 3D walkthrough to help visualize the design. “Photos help show how things will fall together but once you show a client those things in a 3D world too, they say ‘Ok, I can see it now.’ They really enjoy that part of the process.” Divya says it also provides the opportunity for clients to provide feedback and make changes.
Anne Marie’s home is primarily transitional but incorporates a farmhouse feel, with a splash of Mediterranean in the tiles used in the kitchen space. Divya says she considered these elements when planning the design. “Anne Marie didn’t want anything complicated or over the top. She wanted simple and comfortable.”
Working with a designer also helps focus on elements clients might normally not consider, such as using performance fabrics in high-traffic areas on sofas for easy care and longevity. Anne Marie prefers a softer palette of blues, neutrals and olive greens, and Divya used this as a
springboard. She also chose products that would be comfortable and durable, since Anne Marie’s son often uses the living space to hang out with friends, and an extra layer of protection adds peace of mind. “I thought about how to best use the budget to give her everything she was looking for while providing a quality product that will last longer. You can’t have something that will break down after a year or two,” says Divya. “You don’t want to spend tons of money trying to figure out how to take care of it. You want an easy-care product that looks great and feels comfortable. Adding these details is what makes a good design.”
In the front entryway, Divya created a warm space by incorporating a console, a mirror from Uttermost and styling it with books and florals. A bench from Sunpan provides additional storage. “There was enough space to accommodate the needs and create a space that looks beautiful as you walk in while serving the function you are looking for.” Continued on page 64
In the family room, Divya delivered the simple and comfortable aesthetic the homeowner was looking for.

The living room’s layout houses a lift, so Divya focused on marrying beauty with function. “I created multiple zones that worked together,” she says. A custom sectional from Craftmaster creates a separate area for relaxation and conversation. The piano was relocated, and chairs were added to curate a space to enjoy music. “I created a beautiful, cosy space Anne Marie can enjoy when she comes home from work.” Anne Marie often hosts holidays, so it also provides the perfect backdrop to extend the living space when family and friends visit.
A table with wrought-iron legs and a solid wood top from Sunpan blend effortlessly with the modern black chairs Anne Marie recently purchased for the dining room. A sideboard from Universal Furniture Inc. with a stone inlay is a focal point. Rugs from Surya Inc. complete the space.

In the primary bedroom, a new bed from Style In Form adds a sumptuous backdrop for a peaceful slumber. Oversize nightstands anchor the room and add structure. The custom drapes and accent chairs add softness and texture.
Artwork throughout is from Uttermost, Celadon Art and Streamline Art. The pieces help tie the colour palette together. “My favourite art is in the dining room,” says Divya. “It’s a little more abstract and modern but I feel when you are mixing elements that are transitional with a little more modern, they work well together.”
Anne Marie says working with Divya was a great experience from start to finish. “She was easy to communicate with, was accurate with timelines, punctual for appointments and worked around my schedule,” she says. “She was able to get a good sense of what I liked even though I was not always clear or knew what I wanted. I would highly recommend Divya to others looking for a designer.”
The result for Anne Marie’s home is an effortless mix of transitional elements where lavishness is cast aside for comfort. Subtle colours and patterns create texture. festive FELT TREES
TOOLS & MATERIALS
Felt sheets in colour of choice
Paper cones in sizes of your choosing*
Card stock for leaf template
Fabric pen or pencil
Fabric scissors
Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
*You can purchase premade papier mâché cones or make your own with poster board.
HOW-TO
On a piece of card stock, draw a leaf in any shape you’d like; we’ve done a teardrop-like shape. Cut leaf out with scissors. This will be your template.
Place your leaf template on a piece of felt and trace around it with a fabric pen. Repeat this as many times as needed to fill the felt sheet. Cut out the leaf shapes from the felt using scissors. Repeat this step with multiple sheets of felt in different colours until you think you have enough to cover your paper cones. You can always cut more if needed.
Using a hot glue gun, begin gluing your felt leaves around the base of a paper cone. Position the first row of leaves so they hang over the base of the cone by ¼ inch or so. This will ensure the cone is fully covered and allow the bottom leaves to flare out around the base of the tree when it’s standing.
Begin gluing the second row of leaves, being sure to overlap and offset the leaves in the first row. Continue gluing rows of leaves until the entire cone is covered.
To cover the tip of the cone, cut a few leaves in the same shape as the others at about half the size. Glue the smaller leaves at the tip of the cone, similar to the other rows.
Repeat the above process until all of your paper cones are covered with felt leaves.
Now, find a place in your home to display your colourful trees for the holidays and enjoy! OH

TOP TIPS FROM THE DESIGN TEAM
The easiest way to refresh your home from season to season is to add layers and textures during the colder months. Consider adding drapery or side panels to your pared back window coverings and bring in heavier fabrics for pillows and throw blankets. Layering lighting can also help transition your home into darker months without adding clutter.

HOW TO CREATE A GUEST ROOM THEY’LL NEVER WANT TO LEAVE
STORY LINDSAY THORNTON PHOTOGRAPHY NAT KAY
When it comes to hosting overnight visitors, a guest bedroom should be more than just a place to sleep. It should be a haven of comfort and warmth that makes your guests feel pampered and welcome. Here’s how you can create a guest bedroom so cosy and inviting your guests will find it hard to leave.
Creature Comforts
The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, especially in a guest room where comfort is paramount. Start by investing in a quality mattress that provides the perfect balance of support and softness. Even if your mattress is on the firmer side, a plush mattress topper can add a layer of comfort that feels like sleeping on a cloud. When it comes to bedding, think layers. Start with high-thread-count cotton sheets, as they are breathable and soft against the skin. Add a lightweight blanket or quilt, and top it off with a cosy duvet or comforter. Be sure to offer a variety of pillows – some firmer, some softer – so your guests can choose what works best for them.
A few decorative pillows and a throw blanket at the foot of the bed add a touch of style while offering extra warmth on chilly nights.
TIP: As much as we designers love pillows, don’t put too many on the guest bed, as most guests can get overwhelmed when trying to put them all back in your preferred position! We love a lumbar pillow or two or three accent pillows in a guest suite.
Create the Right Ambience
The secret to making anyone feel at home is to make everyone feel at home. Neutral colours and finishes go a long way in creating serenity for many.
Lighting also plays a crucial role in setting the right mood. I start with a soft, warm overhead light for general illumination. Supplement this ambient lighting with table lamps on the nightstands or install wall-mounted sconces on either side of the bed. These provide focused light for reading without being too harsh. Choose lamps with dimmers, which allow your guests to adjust the light to their liking. A small nightlight can also be a thoughtful addition, helping your guests navigate the room in the dark.
Thoughtful Staples
Take a cue from a memorable hotel stay, and strive to pamper your guests. Outfit the room with some basics: fresh towels and washcloths, placed either in the room or in the adjacent bathroom. Extra pillows and blankets should be easily accessible, perhaps stored in a decorative basket or ottoman. Consider adding a pair of cosy slippers or a plush robe for your guests to use during their stay. These small touches can make a big difference, especially on cold mornings. A water carafe and glasses on the nightstand, along with a few snacks can make visitors feel at home when they’re staying at yours.
Engage the Senses
Scents play a significant role in creating a welcoming atmosphere. A lightly scented candle or an essential oil diffuser can fill the room with calming aromas like lavender, vanilla or sandalwood, which are known to promote relaxation and sleep. Be sure to choose scents that are subtle and not overwhelming.
Seasonal fresh flowers always elevate the room, adding both a visual and olfactory appeal. A small bouquet on the nightstand or dresser brightens the space. If fresh flowers aren’t practical, consider a small potted plant.
Finishing Touches
Finally, consider some “extras” that will make your guest bedroom truly special. A selection of books or magazines on the nightstand offers guests something to read as they wind down for the night. A charging station for phones and other devices is a modern convenience that will be appreciated. Personal touches like a framed photo or a small piece of artwork can make the room feel more like home. If space allows, a comfortable chair or bench adds a place to sit and relax, further enhancing the room’s cosy vibe.
Creating a cosy guest bedroom is all about attention to detail. If done right, your visitors may never want to leave. But when they do, you’ll have a stunning space to indulge in, without ever leaving the comfort of home. OH

Today we remain a familyowned Canadian manufacturer of custom-made, solid wood furniture. We still hand-select the kiln-dried walnut, cherry, maple and red oak hardwoods we work with. We continually invest in adding state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to our facilities. And we never forget that the only thing equal to the precision and accuracy of modern manufacturing process is the technique and attention to detail that comes from having a reverence for old world craftsmanship. We practice lean manufacturing methods and each piece is built-to-order. Handstone Furniture is different. It takes a little longer to build. You’ll wait a little longer to get it delivered. How To Style An Enchanting WOODLAND TABLESCAPE
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse! Christmas critters have always had a certain charm. Embrace your whimsical side in an elegant way this season by creating a beautiful woodland table setting that will delight both adults and children at your gathering. From on-trend dinnerware and unforgettable flatware to rustic centrepieces and festive accessories, this tablescape is appropriate for winter dinner parties even after holiday entertaining ends.
EMBRACE NATURAL ELEMENTS
The woodland style has a timeless quality because of its connection to nature. When you’re deciding on items to include, opt for an organic feel with textiles like wood and linen in earthy colours like browns, greens and neutrals. Start by laying the foundation with a natural table runner, woven placemats, bark coasters, fresh or faux greenery, pine cones and handmade beeswax candles for a magical, moonlit glow.

TABLEWARE FIT FOR A FOREST FEAST
Add contemporary details to your woodland table. Choosing black dinner plates with a matte finish will modernize the natural look and provide an unexpected alternative to traditional white dinnerware. Plus, black has proven to be a top-trending colour selection in home décor this year. Pair your plates with a matte-black mug for continuity. Letting some personality shine through with fauna-inspired salad plates that complement the matte-black anchor pieces certainly won’t boar any of your guests! Gold flatware with black handles will complete one thoughtful aesthetic with a hint of gold creating that warm, special feeling you get during the holidays. For glassware, select a smoky, tinted colour that reflects the forest and is reminiscent of antique or vintage glass.
THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS TOO MANY CRITTERS
THE CENTRE OF ATTENTION
This is your chance to flex your creativity and build a unique centrepiece for your table. You’ll need boards for sharing small bites or charcuterie, chunky wood candle holders, themed tealight holders, winter-inspired metal lanterns, glass trees, fairy lights, fir candle rings, sprays and a vase. Sprawl these accessories down the middle of the table or curate them in a circle if you have a round table. Ensure everyone seated has something interesting to look at, like adorable countryside animals, preferably in little sweaters.
Think of all the animals that roam the forest across Canada and then find those figurines to snuggle into your centrepiece in various ways. Felted mice are as abundant as ever in gift stores, including charming dessert-specific mice that can be quietly added as a surprise during the final course of the evening. Planters that look like hedgehogs, clip-on birds or a moose in a cosy knit hat – the more the merrier! You can also incorporate critters into your paper napkin selection or individual edible table treats in the form of moulded chocolates.
By including these elements, you’ll achieve a cohesive and playful woodland tablescape that brings the beauty of nature indoors. It’s easy to adapt the setting to fit casual or formal occasions while maintaining the underlying charm. Just keep your eye on those critters! OH

“KRISTA
AND MICHAEL WANTED A WARM, WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT, IDEAL FOR ENTERTAINING OR RELAXING WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.”
–PAMELA GODWIN
LLocated in Parkview Hills, a quiet East York neighbourhood, this four-bedroom house was originally a bungalow built in 1949 and then converted into a two-storey home. In 2023, the couple and their children, Emily and Nicholas, decided to relocate and found this diamond in the rough with loads of potential. “We previously lived in a townhouse near Greektown, but we had our eye on Parkview Hills because it’s known to be quiet with private lots,” says Krista. “The house needed a makeover. It wasn’t functional and didn’t quite meet our needs.”
They entrusted contractor Antonio Scilipoti of MG Home Renovation to spearhead the construction side of the remodel. “The quality of his work was phenomenal,” says Michael. “He helped us troubleshoot and came up with some innovative ideas.” For example, the powder room was a small, odd-shaped space that presented numerous challenges. Antonio suggested installing a wall-mounted toilet to create more space, a brilliant solution that opened up the room. Krista and Michael teamed up with Pamela Godwin of Pamela Lynn Interiors to create the design vision for the home. Antonio collaborated with Pamela to develop the design plan to convert the powder room into a striking and truly unique space. “There was no leeway for a proper vanity, so we set a small vessel sink on custom shelving,” says Pamela. An accent wall papered in navy blue with metallic highlights adds a refined, sophisticated ambience.
Jax relaxes in the new family room, perfectly at home in this serene and inviting space.

Krista and Michael appreciated Pamela’s expert advice and support. “Pam was wonderful and very organized. She handled problems that came up and pulled everything together,” says Krista. Pamela, an interior decorator and certified colour expert, offers a wide range of services. “I work mostly on large renovations, custom builds and finishing and furnishing projects,” says Pamela. She also helps clients create cohesive colour themes throughout their homes. “I help clients choose everything from paint colours to tile selection.”
Krista and Michael wanted a beautiful aesthetic and practical design that suited their active lifestyle. Pamela’s design blends colour, texture and balance. “Krista and Michael wanted a warm, welcoming environment, ideal for entertaining or relaxing with family and friends,” she says. “It’s casual but elegant.” Pamela’s skillful use of contrasting colours, Benjamin Moore Soot and Benjamin Moore White Dove, creates a bold, dramatic effect throughout the main floor. These colours are highlighted in furniture, drapery, accents and artwork. White Dove softly lightens the walls while oak floors from Rowan Hardwood Floors warm the space. “Pam did a wonderful job ensuring all the colours in the home flow,” says Krista.
The expansive open concept is elevated by décor that gracefully fuses contemporary and classic elements. “We wanted a modern look that was also timeless,” says Krista. Pamela used layered lighting and textiles to create warmth and soften the space. “I like to think of drapery as the home’s jewelry,” says Pamela. Modern touches like dark accent walls in the living and dining areas juxtapose with light, creamy tones and brass and gold highlights throughout. She also focused on details like performance fabrics that are stain-proof and easy to clean.
The remodeled kitchen is modern and chic, with gold fixtures that are seamlessly echoed in the gold accents of the countertops and backsplash. Glass-front cupboards with blackpainted interiors make the white dishes pop, creating a dramatic contrast.

“WE CHANGED THE LAYOUT BECAUSE THE KITCHEN DIDN’T MAKE THE BEST USE OF SPACE”
The couple enjoy entertaining, so reconfiguring and modernizing the kitchen was a must. “We changed the layout because the kitchen didn’t make the best use of space,” says Pamela. Antonio raised the bulkhead, reducing it by about seven inches, significantly opening the space. Luxeme Kitchens Inc. installed creamy off-white cabinetry, strikingly offset by the dark-coloured range hood and island cabinets. Brass fixtures, hardware and pendant lighting subtly reflect the gold veins threaded throughout the white quartz countertops and backsplashes by Ciot Vaughn. A beverage cooler is tucked away in the spacious island, while a panelled refrigerator lends a sleek, minimalist feel to the space.
In the family room, a gas fireplace from The Fireplace Plus Inc. is flanked by custom built-ins. “The fireplace was originally in the corner. We moved it and created some shelving,” recalls Krista. Layered lighting, including pots, chandeliers and art lights, makes it easy to set the mood. Bengal cats Mila and Jax love snuggling on the two-tone sofas in front of a blazing fire on cool winter evenings. A large, eyecatching canvas infuses the space with a bold splash of colour.
The family’s new kitchen is sleek and functional, offering more space and style than the previous one.

Room Design by Diana Bastone Design

The sitting area, fondly dubbed ‘the wine room’ by Krista and Pamela, invites relaxation after a long day. Gray swivel chairs encircle an eclectic white marble coffee table. Custom-moulded panels, inlaid with artwork, accentuate the contrasting colour scheme. These panels are recessed in the wall, stretching from the wine room to the dining area. “It was a long, boring wall, and Pam came up with the idea of using
framed panels with wallpaper inserts,” says Krista “They really add interest and texture.”
Although the couple plans to continue renovating their home, they couldn’t be happier with the results, says Krista. “We have stressful jobs, but when we walk through the door at the end of the day, we immediately feel at ease.” OH
The “wine room” as the space was coined by the designer and homeowner during the remodel, features soft, muted tones and abstract art, creating a refined yet relaxing atmosphere.

BREAD PUDDING WITH Spiked Sauce
RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY JENELLE MCCULLOCH
This classic Bread Pudding with Spiked Sauce is the ultimate comfort dessert. Soft, custardy bread pudding is baked to golden perfection and drizzled with a warm, boozy rum sauce. It’s the perfect indulgence for cosy winter nights or holiday celebrations.
INGREDIENTS
BREAD PUDDING
2 cups milk
2 Tbsp unsalted butter, plus more for buttering dishes
¹/³ cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
½ tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
1 loaf of brioche bread, cut into cubes
½ cup raisins (optional)
SPIKED SAUCE
½ cup sugar
1 Tbsp allpurpose flour
Pinch of salt
1 cup whole milk
¼ cup cream
2 egg yolks
2 Tbsp butter in several pieces
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
2-3 Tbsp rum or bourbon
INSTRUCTIONS
BREAD PUDDING
Preheat oven to 350°F and grease six 8-oz ramekins or one 9 by 13-inch baking dish.
In a saucepan, whisk together milk, butter and sugar. Heat over medium heat until melted. Once cooled, whisk in eggs, cinnamon, vanilla and pinch of salt.
Spread the cubed bread in the greased baking dish or in ramekins. If using, mix raisins into the bread. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, pressing the bread down gently to ensure it’s fully soaked. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the centre is set.
SPIKED SAUCE
In a saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour and pinch of salt. While whisking, add milk, cream and then the egg yolks.
Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, whisking almost constantly, paying attention that no build-up happens along the bottom edges of the pan. Continue to simmer gently for several minutes until sauce is thickened and coats the back of a spoon.
Remove from heat, and while continuing to whisk, add butter, vanilla and rum or bourbon (if using). Push sauce through a strainer.
Pour sauce over bread pudding to serve. OH
