Preface

I’ll be the first to admit it: I don’t pray enough.

As a mother of a frenetic toddler and a newborn baby, my day doesn’t start out the way I’d ideally like it to: tranquil mornings with a cup of coffee and unhurried, uninterrupted time for prayer and solitude with God. Most of the time, it begins with No. 1 kicking me in the ribs in bed and repeating “eat, eat”, or No. 2 either bawling for milk or spitting it out.

As a result, prayer ends up on my “good-to-do but got-to-wait” list . . . and more often than not, doesn’t happen at all. Sometimes, the only prayer I can utter to the Lord is: God, grant me the grace to get me through this day. And sometimes, it’s just these three words: God, help me.

Interestingly, I am more inclined to pray with my children and for them—rather than for my own spiritual growth and my personal relationship with my heavenly Father. I can remember to feed my children their three meals, snacks, and milk . . . but forget that I, too, need to feed and depend on Jesus, my Bread of Life.

If you’re a busy mother juggling responsibilities and children, I hope that you’ll be comforted to know that you’re not alone. In Moments with My Heavenly Father, you’ll find prayers for you, your husband, and your children—prayers beseeching God for daily grace, strength, and hope; prayers petitioning Him for your family’s walk with Jesus; and prayers directing your heart to worship Him as you meditate and dwell in His presence.

Along with these prayers, we’ve selected a verse from the Bible each day that will take you on a journey from Genesis to Revelation. I pray that as you read, reflect on, and respond to the verse, you’ll have a taste of God’s living Word, and be prompted to dive deeper into Scripture.

As we draw near to our Father in prayer each day, may He help you, me, and our families to, as St. Richard of Chichester put it so succinctly, know Him more clearly, love Him more dearly, and follow Him more nearly, day by day.

1

Shape Me into Your Image

God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

—Genesis 1:26

Lord, I acknowledge and worship You as my Creator and Maker. Thank You for giving me life and breath, and for showing me Your steadfast love and new mercies this morning. Thank You for carrying me thus far. I continue to commit myself and my family into Your hands, and ask for Your Spirit to guide me and to shape me more and more into the likeness of Your Son, for Your glory alone.

2

Help Me to Be a Suitable Helper

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

—Genesis 2:18

Lord, You have blessed me with my husband. I confess and repent of the times I have failed to be a good helper to him, whether in my thoughts, words, or actions. Please forgive me, and enable me to do good to my husband—and not harm—all the days of my life (Proverbs 31:12). Help me to love my husband well by helping him, submitting to him, and respecting him, so that You will be glorified in our marriage.

3

You Are the Great I am

God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

—Exodus 3:14

Lord, there are many times when I feel weak, inadequate, and just not good enough to be Your disciple, let alone a parent and wife. Help me not to focus on who I am in all my flaws and failures, but on who You are—the great I am, who is able to do all things. Enable me to teach my children about Your name and Your character, so that we will be equipped to serve and live for Your glory.

4

Holy Like You

I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.

—Leviticus 11:44

Lord, I worship You in fear and trembling, for You are our holy Maker. Help me in my desire to aspire towards holiness each day, so that I will grow to be more and more like Your Son. I pray that my children, too, will offer their bodies as a “living sacrifice, holy and pleasing” to You (Romans 12:1). Transform us by the renewing of our minds, so that we will not conform to this world, but will instead live according to Your good, pleasing, and perfect will (v. 2).

5

Help Me to Love My Neighbour

Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbour as yourself. I am the Lord.

—Leviticus 19:18

Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have borne grudges, resentment, and unforgiveness towards my loved ones and friends. Remind me of Your love, forgiveness, and grace towards me, that I might extend the same to my husband, my children, and others I come across today. Guard my mouth from all sinful anger and give me a tender-hearted disposition, so that I will “love one another deeply, from the heart” (1 Peter 1:22).

When children are demanding your attention and there’s an endless list of chores to be done, one of the hardest things a busy, overwhelmed mother can do is to stop and pray—not just for your children, but for yourself, too. This collection of prayers will help you intercede for yourself and your family. With verses across the Bible to aid you in reflection, these prayers will help you look to God for grace, strength, and hope as you spend precious moments with our heavenly Father.
