Get the children to share about the last time they were punished for a wrongdoing.

PUNISHMENT IN LOVE

Genesis 3:8-24

After Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they hid from God as He walked in the garden. When God called out, “Where are you?”, Adam said, “I heard You coming, so I hid because I was naked.”

God asked: “Naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I told you not to?”

Adam was quick to shift the blame. He replied: “The woman You put here with me gave me the fruit to eat.”

Eve blamed the serpent. She said: “The serpent tricked me. So I ate.”

God turned to the serpent who started it all. He said: “You are cursed! You will always crawl on your belly. You and the woman will always be enemies. One day, one of her children’s children will crush your head, and you will hurt his heel.”

God had a plan to rescue us right from the start. But the man and woman still had to suffer the consequence of their sin—their disobedience to God. The woman would suffer great pains during childbirth, the man would find work difficult, and all humans would die and return to dust.

But God said that a child from Eve’s children would come (that’s Jesus), and He would destroy the serpent (Satan). This rescue will come at a heavy price, for Jesus will also be hurt.

Meanwhile, Adam and Eve had to leave the Garden of Eden. They could no longer enjoy being with God, walking by His side in the Garden of Eden. But before they left, God made clothes for Adam and Eve from animal skins. God still loved and cared for them.

QUESTIONS FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS:

1. When God was angry, did He throw a tantrum and never want to talk to us again? No. God planned to rescue us from the beginning.

2. Do you think sin and evil will last forever? No. One day, Jesus will rescue us so that we can be with Him forever.

3. Why did God make clothes from animals for Adam and Eve? God made clothes for Adm and Eve because He still cared for them.

QUESTIONS FOR PRIMARY-SCHOOLERS:

1. How do we know that God still loves people? God had a plan to bring people back to himself right from the start. He made clothes for Adam and Eve when they left the Garden of Eden.

Dear God, thank You for not rejecting us even when we disobey You. Help us to not hide from You, but to turn to You for forgiveness when we sin against You. Amen.

DON’T LET ANGER CONTROL YOU

Genesis 4:1-8

TIPS FOR DAD

Get the family to share about a time they got angry and how they responded.

After Adam and Eve left the garden, Eve became pregnant. She gave birth to two boys: the older boy was called Cain, and the younger boy was called Abel.

Cain planted food while Abel looked after animals. After some time, the two brothers brought their offerings to God. Cain brought fruits of the soil while Abel chose the fat portions from the firstborn of his flocks.

Abel brought a sacrifice to remind himself, “This sacrifice took my place.” Cain brought an offering based on his own ideas. God liked Abel’s offering more, and Cain became very angry.

God told Cain that if he gave what was right, He would like his offering, too.

God warned Cain: “Bad thoughts are waiting at the door of your heart. You need to stop them from entering.” But Cain did not listen. Instead, he let his angry thoughts grow and grow.

One day, Cain told Abel: “Let us go to the field together!” While they were in the field, Cain attacked and killed his own brother.

Be honest about your feelings. Do not let your anger control you. And choose to respond in the right way.

QUESTIONS FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS:

1. Can you recall a time when you felt angry? What made you angry?

2. What did you do when you were angry?

3. What do you think God would want you to do the next time you feel angry?

QUESTIONS FOR PRIMARY-SCHOOLERS:

1. Why was God happy with Abel’s offering, but not Cain’s? God was happy with Abel’s offering because Abel gave what God wanted. But Cain gave what he wanted.

2. Cain was angry with God. Why did he hurt Abel instead? Because Cain could not hurt God, he decided to hurt Abel instead.

3. What do you think Cain could have done about his feelings? He could have talked to God honestly about his feelings, and asked God to help him love his brother Abel.

Dear God, sometimes, we let our anger control our behaviour. Help us to be honest about our feelings, and to respond in a way that pleases You. Help us choose not to bully or hurt others. Amen.

GUARD YOUR EYES AND HEART

Genesis 6:1–8

TIPS FOR DAD

Play the game, “I spy with my little eye”. Choose an object that you can see, for example, an apple. Say: “I spy with my little eye something beginning with ‘A’.” Your child has to guess the word by looking around.

Adam sinned. Cain sinned. And their sons and daughters continued to sin.

The men looked around them and married whoever they believed was beautiful. They did not choose wives who believed in the same God or shared the same values in life. They chose based on what appealed to their own eyes instead of choosing what was right in God’s eyes.

The world became a very bad place to live in because everyone just did what they liked; they didn’t care about what God said. So there was a lot of fighting and killing.

At that time . . .

Man let their eyes see whatever they wanted.

Man let their hearts think and do whatever they wanted.

The world became filled with violence.

The world became a scary place to live.

The world became a place where those who did right would be bullied.

God looked at the wicked and was deeply troubled.

God was sad that He made human beings on earth.

QUESTIONS FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS:

1. What do you like to look at? What do you think God will say about what you see?

2. What did man have in their hearts in those times? (Evil thoughts. They were thinking about how to show that they were powerful, and would hurt others to prove that.

3. Do you sometimes think about doing things that hurt others?

QUESTIONS FOR PRIMARY-SCHOOLERS:

1. Do you think it is good to let our eyes see whatever they want, and our hearts to do whatever we like? Why? No. We can easily choose what is wrong.

2. How can we avoid making God and our parents sad?

Dear God, help us to guard our eyes and hearts. Teach us to make choices based on what pleases You, rather than what pleases our eyes. Give us hearts that think and do what is right. Amen.

A BIG MESS

Genesis 4:9-26

TIPS FOR DAD

Ask the family: Do we admit our mistakes? Is it important to admit when we’re wrong? Why?

God saw what Cain did to Abel. He asked: “Cain, where is your brother, Abel?”

Cain did not hide. Instead, he retorted proudly: “Why do you ask me? How would I know?” He did not feel bad about hurting his brother. Cain did not care.

God is righteous: He cannot pretend not to see evil. So He scolded and punished Cain. Cain could not be a farmer anymore, for the food he planted would never grow. He would become a nomad, moving from place to place, never having a permanent home.

Cain became afraid. He told God: “The punishment is too much for me. If I have no home and wander around, whoever finds me will kill me!”

God listened and cared. He promised that whoever hurt Cain would be punished seven times more severely. Then He put a mark on Cain so that people would not kill him.

Cain got married and had a son. One of Cain’s descendants was named Lamech. Just like Cain, Lamech also killed a man. Then he called his two wives and declared: “If anyone who hurt Cain was punished seven times, then anyone who hurt Lamech will be punished 77 times.”

Lamech was worse than Cain! God had declared that Cain would be protected, but Lamech declared himself that he would be protected many times more.

QUESTIONS FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS:

1. Did Cain regret hurting Abel? No. He told God: “Am I supposed to take care of my brother?”

Genesis 4:9 NIV

2. What did God do when Cain said that the punishment was too severe? God promised to protect him by saying He would punish those who hurt Cain seven times more. He also gave Cain a mark so others would not hurt him.

3. Compare what Lamech said to what Cain said. How did sin make him worse?

QUESTIONS FOR PRIMARY-SCHOOLERS:

1. Why do you think some people refuse to apologise when they make mistakes?

2. What do you think God would want you to do when you make a mistake? Admit the mistake and ask God to help you not to do it again.

Dear God, help us to be aware when we sin, and not to treat it like it’s no big deal. Help us to be brave and to be ready to admit when we are wrong. Amen.
