oga is a great elixir with no bitter aftertaste or negative side-effects. Yoga has numerous health benefits including boosting immune system, regulating blood pressure, relieving back and arthritis pain, increasing muscle and reducing fat as well as reducing stress and tension. There is a pill that can help with every ailment listed above; however, each will have a side-effect. Yoga can help prevent and/or manage many ailments. Everyone at any age can benefit from Yoga. When our muscles become tight, our range of motion is decreased, and our posture becomes compromised. This can lead to back pain, poor posture, stiff neck, shoulders and frequent headaches. Yoga helps lubricate the joints and increases our flexibility

which helps improve our posture, prevents and reduces back pain and headaches. One does not need to know the history or philosophy of Yoga to receive the benefits of the practice. A Yoga practice of at least two to three times a week will make a significant difference in overall health and well-being. There are many reasons one takes a Yoga class. Many students want to get the benefits of the stress release, others come for the “stretch,” and others come for the peace of mind. I asked a recent Yoga class, “Why do you come to Yoga?” Their answers were as follows: “to relieve back pain;” “for relaxation and release of stress;” “to receive the positive energy that I receive from others in class;” “to feel peace;” “to connect with myself, with my body and be aware;” “to slow down and to let go;” “it makes me relax and forget all stresses and problems of the day;” and “it is a time to dedicate to myself and connect with others.” The reasons one comes to Yoga and the benefits are not just physical. There is a mental health benefit as well. Some people who are anxious or depressed have the sense that they can’t take a full breath and have shallow breathing. By learning the breathing techniques taught in a Yoga class one learns to breathe deeply engaging the abdominal muscles to gently squeeze a little more air out with each exhalation. By inhaling and exhaling fully and completely, one will activate the parasympathetic nervous system which will allow the body to naturally feel more calm and relaxed. Taking the time to find a holistic way to treat what ails you is worth a try. Yoga is good medicine and may be the only one you need.
