Spring Blossoms to Summer Adventures

As April unfolds before us, we’re ushered into a season of vibrant transformation and the warm embrace of spring in South Florida.

Spring in our region is unique—a herald of warmer days, where the sun casts its generous glow, encouraging growth and renewal not just in our gardens but within ourselves. It’s a season that invites us to shed the remnants of the past and look forward with optimism to what lies ahead.

Echoing the sentiments of poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, “Spring is the time of plans and projects.” This season inspires us to dream big, set new goals, and embark on adventures that breathe fresh air into our lives. Spring in South Florida, with its early hints of summer heat, reminds us of the endless possibilities of longer days and sun-f illed skies.

In this spirit of rejuvenation and excitement, we are thrilled to present Our City’s Annual Summer Camp Guide in this month’s edition. Summer camps promise enriching experiences for children across our community. From arts and crafts to science explorations and sports, there’s a camp for every interest, ensuring that your child’s summer is both fun and fulfilling.

Let this April be a time of joyous anticipation and preparation for the summer adventures that lie ahead. Our curated camp guide is here to help you plan a summer that your children will remember for years to come.

As we enjoy the beauty and warmth of spring in South Florida, let’s embrace the opportunity for new beginnings. Whether it’s pursuing a new hobby, embarking on a home improvement project, or simply taking more time to enjoy the outdoors, let the renewal of the season inspire you.

May this spring astonish you with its beauty, warmth, and the promise of exciting summer days to come. Welcome to a season of bright beginnings and new adventures in Our City.

RELAY FOR LIFE: CELEBRATING SURVIVORS AND FUNDING THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

The American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay For Life of Parkland, Coral Springs, Margate and Coconut Creek invites the communities to join the movement to honor and remember loved ones and fight back for lifesaving change on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at the Coral Springs Sportsplex.

This year, more than 1.9 million people will be diagnosed with cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Cancer continues to be the second most common cause of death among Americans, after heart disease.

Relay For Life is a community of survivors, caregivers, local citizens, volunteers and participants who believe that the future can be free from cancer and own the power to make that change. It continues to be the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event, with 2.5 million participants globally uniting to save lives from cancer.

“Relay For Life is more than just a walk. It is a volunteer-led movement that unites communities to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and raise funds to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families,” said Event Lead and cancer survivor Chris Fletcher.

The American Cancer Society’s mission is to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

“Since Covid, our mission has become harder,” explains Chris, who fought Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2019. “But we'll rise to the challenge. During our Relay event on April 6th at the Coral Springs Sportsplex, we're planning on honoring the Survivors, Thrivers still in their fight, and the Caregivers who provide so much help, love, and hope for those fighting.”

“Our theme this year is ‘Relay Through the Decades’” said Entertainment Lead Megan Mila. “More than 40 teams and more than 500 participants will join together to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. Our goal is to host over 100 cancer survivors and their caregivers at the event. The opening ceremony will include a special Survivors Lap. Survivors, Thrivers and their Caregivers will also enjoy a complimentary dinner. After sunset, we light Luminaria bags to remember those we have lost, to celebrate cancer survivors, and to show those affected by cancer that they are not alone.”

Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Tacoma, Washington, in 1985, Relay For Life unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action for lifesaving change. Since 1985, Relay For Life has raised $6.8 billion to help save lives from cancer.

Dollars raised each year by Relay participants across the country help support the American Cancer Society’s mission in countless ways, including funding and conducting breakthrough research, providing education and advocating for the needs of cancer patients and their families, and providing essential services throughout their cancer journey.

“It’s never been easier to raise money for Relay For Life and help fund the future. Every dollar raised fuels the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission. The fight against cancer needs you now more than ever,” said Survivor Program Chair Amanda Fletcher.

Tamarac Launches Residential Aid: Housing Cost Relief Programs

To aid its community members facing financial hardships, Tamarac has unveiled an extensive Residential Assistance Program. This program is designed to provide essential support to those struggling with housing expenses.

The program is set up to help with a variety of financial burdens, including difficulties with mortgage, rent, increased rent costs, and unpaid fees to homeowner associations (HOA) or condominiums.

Key components of the initiative include:

• Rental Assistance Program: Offers crucial aid for tenants behind on rent to avoid eviction.

• GAP Rental Assistance Program: Designed for residents dealing with rent hikes, it helps cover the difference between their income and the increasing rent, promoting housing stability.

• Mortgage Assistance Program: Aims to support homeowners lagging behind on mortgage payments to prevent foreclosure.

• Applications will be considered on a first-come, firstserved basis to ensure an equitable and efficient distribution of funds, and will be accepted until all funds are disbursed.

Direct payments will be made to landlords or mortgage lenders on behalf of the approved applicants. Applicants are required to secure a W-9 form from their landlord or mortgage lender to facilitate payments.

Those interested in applying should carefully follow the guidelines on the Neighborly platform, which necessitates registration or login to begin the application process. Scan the QR Code for more info and to apply.

DISTRICT 96 UPDATE

The 2024 Legislative Session officially ended on March 8th with the Sine Die Ceremony, the traditional conclusion of all business in both the Florida Senate and Florida House Chambers. I am proud to announce the passing of six bills, eleven co-sponsored bills, and almost $3 million in appropriations secured for state and local projects. Here are some highlights:

Legislation Highlights:

CS/HB 793 - Coral Springs Improvement District, Broward County

This is a local bill that will provide stricter controls over the contract and bidding process for CSID. This bill will close loopholes that could be used for potential abuse.

CS/HB 983 - Public Records/Clerks of the Circuit Court, Deputy Clerks, and Clerk Personnel

This bill will protect these public servants and their families from public records requirements in order to protect them from harassment.

CS/CS/HB 161 - Payments for Health Care Providers and Surgical Procedures under Workers’ Compensation

This bill is the first substantive workers compensation bill in over 20 years and includes updated pay scales for service providers, which will increase access to quality care and additional providers.

HB 765 - Leave of Absence to Officials and Employees

For

This bill will allow certain public officials and employees to continue receiving full pay during leave for federal military service that lasts a certain period of time.

CS/CS/HB 7021 - Mental Health and Substance Abuse

This legislation will provide county court judges with the ability to order mental healthcare to defendants in need rather than just dismissing a case. This bill was passed as part of a larger mental health reform package.

HM 1145 - Florida National Guard

This memorial asks Congress to push the National Guard Bureau to increase the number of National Guard troops allowed for Florida. The current number is inadequate to meet the needs of a state with Florida’s population density and propensity for natural disasters.

Appropriations Highlights:

Tamarac Park Safety and Health - $271,577.00

City of Coral Springs - Everglades Greenway Loop - $800,000.00 Sunrise Fire Rescue Regional Highway Response Equipment - $400,000.00

Insurance: Once again, the Legislature did not address the insurance crisis in any substantive way. My office continues to receive calls from Floridians who are facing extreme financial difficulties due to exorbitant insurance rates, yet nothing was done to bring down these costs. This “Kitchen Table Issue” affects every Floridian; even renters will see the cost of rent increase as landlords try to recoup these additional costs. I remain committed to advocating for comprehensive reforms to our property insurance system and working toward solutions that directly impact the financial well-being of each and every Floridian.

Thank you to my incredible team and colleagues for the help and support. We have more work to do, and I look forward to doing it.

Representative Dan Daley is a Member of the Florida House of Representatives serving District 96, which includes portions of Coral Springs, Sunrise, Tamarac, and our Florida Everglades.

Pet of the Month

Contuco came into my life 6 years ago, he is my precious treasure and the last memory of my first son Chihuahua called Fideo (his father). Since then he has been my companion for all my adventures. We came from Argentina to look for a new opportunity and I feel grateful for having him supporting me on my side.
