Spring Blossoms to Summer Adventures

As April unfolds before us, we’re ushered into a season of vibrant transformation and the warm embrace of spring in South Florida.

Spring in our region is unique—a herald of warmer days, where the sun casts its generous glow, encouraging growth and renewal not just in our gardens but within ourselves. It’s a season that invites us to shed the remnants of the past and look forward with optimism to what lies ahead.

Echoing the sentiments of poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, “Spring is the time of plans and projects.” This season inspires us to dream big, set new goals, and embark on adventures that breathe fresh air into our lives. Spring in South Florida, with its early hints of summer heat, reminds us of the endless possibilities of longer days and sun-f illed skies.

In this spirit of rejuvenation and excitement, we are thrilled to present Our City’s Annual Summer Camp Guide in this month’s edition. Summer camps promise enriching experiences for children across our community. From arts and crafts to science explorations and sports, there’s a camp for every interest, ensuring that your child’s summer is both fun and fulfilling.

Let this April be a time of joyous anticipation and preparation for the summer adventures that lie ahead. Our curated camp guide is here to help you plan a summer that your children will remember for years to come.

As we enjoy the beauty and warmth of spring in South Florida, let’s embrace the opportunity for new beginnings. Whether it’s pursuing a new hobby, embarking on a home improvement project, or simply taking more time to enjoy the outdoors, let the renewal of the season inspire you.

May this spring astonish you with its beauty, warmth, and the promise of exciting summer days to come. Welcome to a season of bright beginnings and new adventures in Our City.

All Welcome to the 67th Annual Hollywood Rotary Foundation

FOOD-FRIENDS-FUNraising Auction

The Hollywood Rotary Foundation has been raising funds for college scholarships for Hollywood high school seniors and supporting local youth organizations at its annual auction since 1958. It is one of the oldest, continuous charity fundraising events in South Florida and is an annual Hollywood favorite.

The event features a plethora of gifts and merchandise to choose from, including gift certificates for hotel stays, vacation rentals, cruises, airline tickets, restaurants, and tickets for performances & sporting events. Merchandise will include art, decorative items, appliances, tools, electronics, jewelry, toys, wine & spirits, and an African Safari Adventure. We sat down with the 67th Annual Auction Chair and Hollywood Rotary Club President-elect 2024/2025, Anthony Gambone to learn more.

Catering to several Hollywood restaurants like China Hollywood, Capone’s Italian, Miramar Bakery, and more. The event kicks off on Thursday evening with an old-fashioned backyard BBQ.

That sounds amazing! What programs do the proceeds support?

Tell us about the Hollywood Rotary Foundation Auction

There is so much! It goes back to 1958 when the Hollywood Rotary Club held its first “Rotary Radio Auction”! The five-day event was broadcast from the Rotary clubhouse, and listeners would phone in their bids. The auction is the oldest continuous charity fundraising event in Hollywood.

The BULL CLUB raffle is a fun item that is still a big part of the event. During the early years of the auction, a living, breathing bull was caged on our clubhouse lawn and the winner was delivered steaks. The live bull and meat prize gave way in the 1990’s to CASH. But the name stuck! Today, kids might ride a rubber inflatable bull on the clubhouse lawn. But make no mistake about it: a $10 raffle ticket is a chance to win a cash prize of $1,000! And, that’s no BULL!

In addition to lots of fun from celebrity auctioneers, there’s the incredible food. From the best seafood paella from Buleria

The event supports college and vocational school scholarships awarded annually to McArthur HS, South Broward HS, ChaminadeMadonna, and Hollywood Hills HS. The Rotary Foundation is a longtime advocate and proud supporter of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, The YMCA of South Florida, The Boys and Girls Club of Broward County, and The Hollywood Police Athletic League (PAL).

The Auction also supports many other local charities such as “Food for Thought” (formerly Pack-A-Sack), feeding elementary and middle school kids, and The Community Enhancement Collaboration (CEC) Hollywood’s family food pantry.

The Auction lasts for multiple days. It must be huge! Is it a good event for the kids?

It is a huge auction! The auction is a family-friendly FUN event with several generations of Hollywood residents attending each year. Kids are the “floorwalkers,” having fun walking and showing bidders auction items around the room. Lotsy-Dotsy from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is scheduled to make a special guest appearance this year, and an autographed Lotsy-Dotsy Doll will be auctioned this year.

Tell us about the Hollywood Rotary Foundation

The Hollywood Rotary Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that promotes

“Service Above Self” and goodwill throughout our community. Since its inception, the Rotary Foundation has donated more than three million dollars to youth projects in our community. And the Club has put back in our community over $5,000,000 in the past 99 years, with $50,000 each year in scholarships to the Hollywood’s four High Schools. Our goal is always to raise as much money as possible with the community’s help and donations for the many youth service organizations and nonprofit initiatives we support.

Sounds incredible! How can our readers participate?

We hope you can attend and enjoy the Friends, Food, and FUNraising!

And if not, perhaps you will donate a unique item to be auctioned* or buy a BULL CLUB raffle ticket for a chance to win $1,000!

Over the years, the Rotary Club of Hollywood wishes to THANK YOU for making the Auction a huge success! Proceeds are now empowering our community through scholarships for deserving students, and supporting many other community youth service organizations. Your support fuels our mission. A special shoutout to you for your invaluable contribution. Together, we're shaping future leaders!

All Proceeds from the Rotary Club of Hollywood Foundation** Auction and BULL CLUB Raffle donations are used to fund youth organizations, non-profit group initiatives, scholarships and vocational education in our community.

Hollywood Asks Residents to Share the Beach with “Turtle Friendly” Lighting

Turtle Nesting season takes place every year from March 1st to October 31st. To help protect the animals, the City of Hollywood has put in place a "Turtle Friendly Lighting Ordinance." This ordinance is crucial because hatchlings are naturally drawn to light, which can pose a problem in urban beach settings. Typically, hatchlings would head toward the brighter ocean horizon on undeveloped beaches. However, artificial lighting from nearby buildings can mislead them, directing them away from the safety of the ocean. Implementing turtle-friendly lighting is a key strategy to reduce hatchling disorientation and make Hollywood Beach a safer place for these endangered creatures.

In 2023, the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program recorded a groundbreaking 4,785 nests along the county's 24-mile coastline, including significant contributions from Hollywood Beach. This beach is a preferred nesting ground for three endangered sea turtle species: leatherbacks, loggerheads, and greens. The collective effort to ensure the beach remains a conducive nesting environment is

critical for the continuation of these species. Guidelines

for Turtle-Friendly Lighting

• To protect our sea turtle population, beachside lighting should adhere to three primary guidelines set by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC):

• Keep it Low: Lighting fixtures should be installed as low as possible to fulfill their intended purpose, emitting the minimal amount of lumens needed.

• Keep it Shielded: Ensure that light sources are not visible from the beach. This includes interior lighting, which should be obscured with curtains or blinds post-sunset.

• Keep it Long-Wavelength: Lights should emit long-wavelength light (560 nm or longer), achievable with amber or red LEDs, without the need for additional filters.

Remember, even the light from cell phones can disrupt the nesting and hatchling process of sea turtles. It's best to keep phones away if you're visiting the beach during the nesting season at night.

Turtle Friendly Lighting Recognition Pilot Program

To bolster awareness and adherence to Hollywood's turtle-friendly lighting requirements, the city initiated a recognition program for compliant property owners last year. This program highlights properties that effectively minimize their lighting impact on sea turtles by following set guidelines, such as using low, shielded, and long-wavelength lighting, and making interior lights invisible from the beach. These measures, alongside the installation of tinted glass or films and the use of curtains and blinds, contribute significantly to the protection of sea turtles during their critical nesting and hatching periods.

Collins Elementary School, a staple in the Dania Beach community with a rich heritage, celebrated its 65th anniversary on Tuesday, March 19. The event commemorates the school's strong history of academic achievement, community engagement, and fostering a nurturing learning environment for generations of students.

“For 65 years, Collins Elementary has been a cornerstone of our community,” Principal Tracy Jackson said. “We are incredibly proud of the legacy of excellence we have established and the positive impact we have had on countless students. This anniversary celebration is a chance

for us to come together, reminisce about the past, and look forward to a bright future.”

Event organizers prepared a fun-filled morning for the entire community. The festivities kicked off with a parade featuring Collins Elementary students and staff, followed by a ceremony on the basketball court to honor the school's achievements and celebrate its students. The program included remarks from District and City of Dania Beach officials, and – adding to the significance of the event – the Collins Family, including Mrs. Leola Collins, for whom the school is named.

Collins Elementary welcomed the entire community to celebrate this momentous occasion. The event was truly a day of joy, laughter, reminiscing, and celebration of the school's enduring legacy.

Hollywood Historical Society: 50 Years of Preserving Our City’s Treasures for Future Generations

As the Hollywood Historical Society approaches its 50-year anniversary, we want to honor the real heroes of the organization, the tireless volunteers at the heart of the HSS, the Research Center. Lesley Lee Yuen and Mary Beth Busutil, board members Marion Fording and Jean Morford, former president Karen Albertson and Archivist Emeritus Dr. Joan Mickelson PhD (now retired) are the ones to go to if you want to know anything about Hollywood’s past.

WHEN YOU NEED TO KNOW

“Let me take you through it,” said Dr. Mickelson, author, historian, archivist and frequent lecturer for the Hollywood Historical Society. She indicates a wall of file cabinets in the Research Center.

“The first one is sorted by category, the next, by people, and the next, by buildings. Over there, we have oral histories from 1976.

“That cabinet,” she continued, "has every article from the Hollywood Sun-Tattler newspaper, all cut and filed alphabetically.”

The files contain photos, documents, floorplans, copies of permits, and more, to help the researchers get the facts.

THE LIFE OF A DONATION

When a new item comes into the Hollywood Historical Society, the donor conveys all the info they know about it and confirms their right to donate it.

Then, the archivists enter everything into the database, scan in the photos, and cross-reference all the data by name, location, description and keywords. It’s painstaking, detailed work. In between new items, they work on things already in-house and help with new requests.

SO WHAT’S NEW AT THE Hollywood Historical Society?

We’re turning 50! And plans are now being made for the celebration of the big anniversary. Visit our website, hollywoodhistoricalsociety.org/ for details, or catch up with us on Facebook or Instagram.

The Hollywood Historical Society holds

over 25,000 items in its collection and also has books, photos and more for sale at the Research Center. Please call 954923-5590 for hours.

HOLLYWOOD UPDATE

In January, I had the opportunity to present the State of the City Address to the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, an invitation that the chamber extends to Hollywood's mayor at the start of each new year.

In this year's address, I highlighted how we are working to achieve our city’s mission: "To provide a thriving community, where quality living is made available to all."

My discussion began with a report on our city’s financial health, which is a critical component for the quality of life that a city can provide for its residents.

For 2024, I was happy to report that through our continuing commitment to sound financial administration and future-oriented governance, our Operating Budget for 2024 is at a record 779 million dollars and is again structurally balanced.

Add to that our commitment to maintaining recommended levels of reserves, achieving higher bond ratings and controlling expenses, and our city is on track to reinvest more and more dollars back into our community at a reduced or flat property tax rate.

With our stronger budget, we can invest more into public safety, housing affordability programs, neighborhood infrastructure, renewing parks, environmental resiliency and more. We have many roadway resurfacing, street lighting and sidewalk improvement projects ahead. We are planting more trees and installing new landscaping to continue beautifying our city’s thoroughfares. We are also continuing to renew our parks with new playgrounds, ball fields, lighting, pathways, computers, fitness equipment, pickleball courts, basketball courts, dog parks and more.

For our Water and Wastewater Utilities infrastructure, we are in the midst of completing massive injection well projects that will end the disposal of treated wastewater into the ocean. We’ll continue expanding the sewer system where we can afford to, and we’ll continue upgrading our stormwater system to improve our city’s drainage, given it no longer delivers an adequate level of service for a community experiencing changing climate conditions. Lots of work is needed in this area.

As you’ll read in greater detail in the pages ahead, our voter-approved GO Bond projects are also progressing. We’ll break ground on the new Police Headquarters this year. We’ll begin constructing new sea walls and living shorelines to prevent high-tide flooding, and towards year-end, we’ll begin adding more speed tables to slow down speeding cars.

Operationally, one important highlight is our complete overhaul of the city’s Building Department. With completely new software ahead for easier permit submission and management, more personnel and a new one-stop center for residents due to open in August, the building permit process in Hollywood is about to become way more efficient for our residents and businesses.

These are exciting times for Hollywood. We will be entering our city's centennial year in 2025, celebrating 100 years of Hollywood in better financial health, with a future for Hollywood that is physically safer, operationally better, environmentally more sustainable, economically stronger, and visually more appealing.
