Don’t forget to file your tax return (or request an extension). All United States taxpayers are required to file a return with the Internal Revenue Service that shows their income from last year. Did you know that the Federal income tax was first introduced in 1861 as a way to help pay for the Civil War? The original law was subsequently found to be unconstitutional and revoked. The Sixteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reinstated the national income tax in 1913.

Passover

Wishing a happy Passover holiday to all of our Jewish readers. Passover is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. It is celebrated for seven or eight days, depending on the Jewish tradition. The holiday is marked by a number of rituals and customs, the most well-known of which is the Seder. The Seder is a festive meal that takes place on the first night of Passover, during which the story of the Exodus is retold and special foods, such as matzo and bitter herbs, are eaten. The holiday is a time for family gatherings, reflection, and gratitude for freedom and deliverance.

SOPHISTICATED SUSHI IN PLANTATION

You don’t have to drive all the way to Miami to enjoy the best Sushi in South Florida. In fact, you can enjoy an exquisite fine dining experience with the freshest fish and tastiest creations right in the heart of Plantation. Renowned Executive Chef Jimmy-San is serving his fantastic cuisine at Otoro Sushi & Asian Kitchen located at The Shops at One Plantation on University Drive.

The restaurant features exotic creations that Chef Jimmy-San has developed during his 30+ year culinary career. These include meticulously crafted sushi, certified wagyu beef, and classic Asian cuisine dishes.

Chef Jimmy-San began his culinary career in Atlanta during the 1990s. He quickly moved up the culinary ladder, becoming the Executive Chef at some of Atlanta’s most renowned restaurants, including popular hot spots Twist and Prime. During that time he perfected his

modern approach to the ancient Japanese art of sushi.

As soon as you step foot in the restaurant, your eyes will be drawn to an impressive, back-lit Mount Fuji landscape on the back wall of the main room. Between the beautiful, 20-foot-wide scene and the dining room is the space where the sushi masters do their work. A long, beautiful sushi counter made from exotic wood welcomes diners to have a seat.

Omakase

When you visit Otoro, be sure to order “omakase.” Omakase translates to “I’ll leave it up to you” in Japanese. According to the Michelin Guide, “few dining experiences are more revered” worldwide. Omakase is best experienced at the sushi counter, where you can immerse yourself in the experience. Chef Jimmy-San and his highly trained chef staff will prepare one piece of fish at a time, describe its origin, and answer any questions you might have about the dish. You will marvel at the precision of their work, the incredible concentration, and the beauty of their knife work.

An omakase meal is a multi-sensory, almost spiritual, experience. The chef will offer the perfect piece of fish for the season and is guided by his guests’ reactions. The presentation of each course is as visually stunning as the taste. Otoro also offers sake tastings to accompany the fish. This elegant dining experience is perfect for celebrating a special occasion or even a first date!

For those less adventurous, Otoro offers a variety of popular Asian dishes and traditional sushi offerings. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and offers take-out options.

Otoro is located in The Shops at One Plantation at 1447 S University Drive. Open Sunday through Thursday from 11 am to 10 pm, and Friday & Saturday from 11 am to 11 pm, we're here to serve you! For reservations, catering inquiries, or to learn more about our private event options, call 754-200-4560, visit www.otorosushibar.com, or stop by and try a bite!

Tree-mendous Achievement: Plantation Earns Tree City Status Again

Most Broward residents already know it but the Arbor Day Foundation confirms it: Plantation is a top-notch city – especially when it comes to trees.

The foundation recently declared Plantation a Tree City for 2023, marking the 40th time in the city’s 71-year history it has attained that status.

“It’s very clear what residents here want, and that’s a city that looks better than everyone else’s,” Plantation Mayor Nick Sortal said. “That’s why we have spats and conflicts almost every time a builder or new business wants to develop here. We’re picky, and this recognition shows that.

“I’m fine if we have that reputation.”

Plantation achieved Tree City status by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

“Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers, and committed citizens in communities like Plantation make smart investments in urban forests,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits.”

Trees are assets to a community when properly planted and maintained. They help to improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants, and provide wildlife habitat, among many other benefits.

Sortal said there’s a long list of credits to be handed out.

“From our Planning and Zoning landscape division to Public Works to Parks and Recreation, employees throughout the city work to help educate our residents and businesses on placing the right trees in the right location in order to ensure their long, healthy life,” Sortal said. “It takes almost everyone.”

Sortal and the City Council celebrated the occasion at their Feb. 7 council meeting, raising the Tree City flag outside City Hall to accompany the United States and Florida flags.

“We hope it reaffirms to our community that we are committed to preserving what

they love about our city and doing it in a way that promotes our long-term sustainability,” Sortal said. “We also understand that there are rules are residents are asked to follow. When we interact with them, we try to have a smile on our face.”

The Arbor Day Foundation is a million-member nonprofit conservation and education organization with the mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. More information is available at arborday.org.

How Being a Woman Has Impacted Her Career

At the beginning of my career, I experienced the impact of gender bias, where being a woman influenced the extent to which I was taken seriously. Nevertheless, I have leveraged those experiences as opportunities for growth, evolving into a more resilient and capable professional, ultimately enhancing my value as an employee and the work I do.

Words to Live By

Goals should never be easy! They should force you to work, even if they are challenging at the time. Start with a “want to” goal rather than a “have to” goal. If you’re still trying to decide what to do with your life, it’s important to start with something that makes you happy. I am blessed to have found a career (and a boss) that makes me happy :)

JUMPING FOR JOY: Two Babies Born on Leap Year Day at Broward Health

Broward Health welcomed two special arrivals on Leap Year Day, bringing joy and excitement to the families and hospital staff alike. The first arrival was baby boy Amari Garcia, born at Broward Health Coral Springs at 2:52 a.m., weighing 6 pounds 12 ounces. His arrival marked a moment of celebration, filled with love and anticipation for his future.

Not long after, another bundle of joy made her debut at Broward Health Medical Center around 8:00 a.m. This beautiful baby girl, yet to be given her permanent name, weighed 6 pounds 11 ounces. She carries on a cherished family tradition, as her name will be the third generation to begin with the letter “J.” For now, she is lovingly referred to as Baby J, a placeholder for the special name that will soon be hers.

The births of these two babies on Leap Year Day added an extra touch of magic to an already special day. Leap Year, occurring only once every four years is known for its rarity, making these births even more unique and memorable.

As these babies grow and thrive, they will forever hold a special place in the hearts of their families and serve as a reminder of the joy and blessings that each new life brings. Their stories are a testament to the miracle of birth and the incredible journey that awaits them.

Airman Samuel Munroe, a native of Plantation, Florida, serves at Aviation Rescue Swimmer School.

Munroe graduated from South Plantation High School in 2016.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Plantation.

“Where you aim in life is what you get; freedom is a relative term,” said Munroe. "After college, I joined the Navy to live a better life. If you enjoy life and your job it can be your passion."

Munroe joined the Navy ten months ago.

“The Navy SEALs inspired me to join,” said Munroe. "I heard legends of excellence from stories to be the best you can to be a part of a legacy."

Aviation Rescue Swimmer School provides initial aviation water survival training and CPR qualification to all preflight student naval aviators and student naval flight officers, student flight surgeons, naval aircrew candidates, student aviators from other branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and international student aviators. Aviation rescue swimmers serve in treacherous conditions to complete life-saving missions like evacuating families during a storm, rescuing a crew off of a ship in the Pacific Coast or saving mountain climbers.

This year commemorates 50 years of women flying in the U.S. Navy. In 1973, the first eight women began flight school in Pensacola; one year later six of them, known as "The First Six," earned their “Wings of Gold.” Over the past 50 years, the Navy has expanded its roles for women to lead and serve globally and today our women aviators project power from the sea in every type of Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard aircraft. Our Nation and our Navy is stronger because of their service.

“Having a cadre of students who are eager to learn and extremely hardworking, ensures we offer the best and brightest to naval aviation and the Aviation Rescue Swimmer community,” said Capt. Brad Arthur, commanding officer, Naval Aviation Schools Command.

Serving in the Navy means Munroe is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

“The Navy contributes to national security by excelling in communication efforts and maritime knowledge,” said Munroe.

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the Internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy.

Munroe has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

“I am most proud of being with the Navy Challenge Program because it challenges me and holds me accountable,” said Munroe. "It means being amongst the best."

As Munroe and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy.

“Serving in the Navy means being successful and professional,” said Munroe. "It also means becoming a great student, being a part of a team and being held accountable as a teammate."

Munroe is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.

“I would like to thank my mom, Aida, for supporting me,” added Munroe. "She talks about my grandpa and cousin who served and were successful. She pushes me to strive for that."

e are planning to expand our use of license plate readers (LPR), which made their debut about a year ago in the east part of Plantation.

Although relatively new, the LPR system has already assisted in the apprehension of dangerous felons, the location of missing persons, and the recovery of stolen property. The readers detect stolen vehicles, missing persons and wanted criminals and sends alerts to the police. (Surprisingly, once a car is stolen the thieves often use it to commit more crimes.)

Our next plans are for the Midtown District, then the rest of the city.

Chevron Remake Planned

The Chevron station at Peters Road and University Drive is getting a necessary makeover. The City Council approved a site plan at its Jan. 24 meeting.

The new design will allow drivers greater maneuverability around the pumps, and the convenience store portion will have a new exterior, more in line with much of the new construction going on in the Midtown area.

Officials said the station will likely close in the fall, after permitting and plans are finalized. The makeover will take about a year.

Toi Spa Academy

On Jan. 10, the City Council approved a zoning waiver and use variance to facilitate the opening of Toi Spa Academy, 9739 Broward Blvd. (That’s in the same plaza that contains Vivace Italian Restaurant and Cocktail Bar.)

Toi Spa has opened a new salon location in Plantation Walk with a ribbon-cutting in late 2023 and is looking to transition the original space into a beauty school.

Two other similar schools in Plantation are the Paul Mitchell at Broward Mall and Florida Barber Academy at Westgate Shopping Center on State Road 7.

There are about 10 Toi Spas in South Florida. Go to ToiSpas.com.

ACTION ON TRASH ISSUES

The city council discussed the potential courses of action to address missed trash pickups. Waste Management (WM), our solid waste hauler, has provided a plan to improve services, but we were still concerned. The city council determined to institute administrative fees against WM (where allowed by the contract) at this time with further discussion down the road if the situation does not improve.

A sample card was placed inside each wallet and displayed the Social Security number of the company’s secretary, Mrs. Hilda Schrader Whitcher. The sample card was half of the size of an actual Social Security card and written in red, with “Specimen” written in bold, over 40,000 people reported 078-05-1120 as their own social security number on tax returns.

PREVENTION FIRST: THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO PROTECTING YOUR PET FROM HEARTWORM DISEASE

As veterinarians, we're dedicated to safeguarding the health and well-being of our furry patients. One of the most significant threats we face is heartworm disease – a potentially fatal condition that affects dogs, cats, and even ferrets. In this article, we'll delve into the intricacies of heartworm disease, its diagnosis, treatment, and most importantly, prevention.

What is Heartworm Disease

Heartworm disease is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis, transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Once inside a host, the larvae mature into adult worms, residing in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Over time, these worms can cause severe damage to vital organs, leading to life-threatening complications if left untreated.

Diagnosis and Screening

Early detection is key to managing heartworm disease effectively. Veterinarians employ a range of diagnostic tools, including blood tests and imaging techniques, to identify the presence of heartworms in pets. Routine screening during annual wellness exams is crucial, as early-stage infections often present no visible symptoms.

Treatment Options

Treating heartworm disease can be complex and challenging, particularly in advanced cases. Treatment typically involves a series of injections to eliminate adult worms, along with medications to alleviate symptoms and prevent further complications. However, successful treatment relies heavily on early intervention and adherence to a strict treatment protocol.

Prevention is Paramount

While treatment is available, prevention

remains the cornerstone of heartworm disease management. Veterinarians recommend year-round preventive medication for all pets, supplemented by environmental control measures to reduce mosquito populations. Preventive medications, available in various forms such as chewable tablets and topical treatments, are highly effective at protecting pets from infection.

The Role of Pet Owners

As pet owners, you play a crucial role in protecting your furry companions from heartworm disease. It's essential to prioritize preventive care by administering monthly medications as directed and scheduling routine wellness exams with your veterinarian. Additionally, implementing mosquito control measures in and around your home can further reduce the risk of transmission.

Conclusion: Together, We Can Make a Difference

Heartworm disease poses a significant threat to the health and happiness of our beloved pets. However, by staying informed, proactive, and working closely with your veterinarian, you can mitigate the risk of

infection and ensure your furry friends lead long, healthy lives. Let's join forces in the fight against heartworm disease and keep our pets safe and protected for years to come.

Remember, if you have any concerns or questions about heartworm disease or preventive care for your pet, don't hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian. We're here to support you every step of the way.

Choosing the Perfect Summer Camp for Your Child

Choosing the perfect summer camp for your child involves more than scrolling through options; it means finding a supportive environment that caters to their interests, needs, and overall well-being. With insights from a child development and education expert, here are essential considerations to ensure a summer filled with growth, learning, and fun.

Match the Camp to Your Child's Interests: Whether it's a diverse camp offering a wide array of activities or a specialized one focusing on martial arts, dance, or arts, the ideal camp resonates with your child's passions, making it far more engaging for them.

Ensure Age-Appropriate Activities: It's crucial that the camp you choose is tailored to your child's age group, with activities that are both suitable and challenging for their developmental level.

Location and Schedule Compatibility: The camp's location and schedule should align with your summer logistics, ensuring convenience

and maximizing enjoyment for both you and your child.

Seek Diverse Activities: A variety of activities within even specialized camps ensures your child remains engaged and benefits from a well-rounded summer experience.

Check for Qualified and Safety-Conscious Coaches: A camp's quality is largely determined by its staff. Ensure coaches are not only experts in their fields but also certified in CPR and first aid, highlighting a commitment to a safe and nurturing environment.

Look for Field Trips and Special Events: Camps that include field trips and special events can offer unforgettable experiences, allowing children to apply their skills in new and exciting ways.

Research Social Media and Reviews: A camp's online presence and feedback from other families can provide valuable insights into its daily operations, community atmosphere, and overall satisfaction levels.

By keeping these key points in mind, you can choose a camp that not only meets your

logistical needs but also offers an enriching and memorable summer for your child. This approach ensures that your selection supports your child's development in an environment filled with nurturing, fun, and educational experiences.
