2020 Broomfield Days Cancelled Due to COVID

B

roomfield Days is our City’s annual hometown festival. Held for decades, the one-day event is held the third weekend in September each year. Broomfield Days includes a myriad of activities including a parade, trade fair, car show, kids’ activities, a clown contest, rides, games, food, music, entertainment, pet activities, a 5K run, bingo, a golf tournament, pancake breakfast, and much, much more. The annual festival is the single largest and most equivocally Broomfield event of the year. It is a time for tradition, memories, old and new friends, and celebration of all that is wonderful about our town. This year, Broomfield Days will not be held in order to keep the community safe from possible COVID impacts.

From the City of Broomfield Broomfield’s number one priority is the health and safety of residents. The difficult decision to cancel Broomfield Days was a public health decision based on the data and gathering size restrictions in the state’s public health orders. Current limitations are set at 175 people, with a maximum of 500 people allowed to gather if Broomfield is approved for the next,

highest current available level, Protect Our Neighbor. Broomfield Days typically records between 15,000 and 25,000 people in one day, on one block of Midway Boulevard. As we continue to navigate these uncertain times, one thing stands true – we are proud of all Broomfield residents for stepping up to do their part to slow the spread of the deadly coronavirus. When our beloved Broomfield Days returns in 2021 it will be bigger, better, and brighter than ever before. In the meantime, we ask you to share with us your photos and favorite memories of Broomfield Days gone by. We’d love to see photos of vendor booths from Broomfield Days inception, a pic of you as a kid walking in the parade in the ’80s and ’90s, or a float cruising down Midway when Broomfield was still a small town. Share them on your social media pages with hashtag #BroomfieldDaysMemories or email them to yourbroomfield@ broomfield.org. I think the first time I participated in the Broomfield Days parade was when my daughter (who is now married and in her 30s) started at Emerald Elementary. Following behind Snortner listening to all the little kids scream and shout was so much fun. Over the years I walked with Emerald some more, a Brownie troupe, FRIENDS of Broomfield, a half a dozen political campaigns, including my own, City Council, and probably a couple of others that blend into the past. I’ve worked a zero waste booth, helped out at vendor booths, and for the last three Broomfield Days helped organize the trade show portion and even held “Trade Show Tips” to teach people get the most out of their booths. Living in the heart of Broomfield - I only live a few blocks away from Midway Park - my family and I were able to walk to and from the event. For the first time since I started getting involved with my community, this mainstay will be missing. While I understand and agree with the reasons it had to be canceled, that does not make it any easier. I feel a hole where a piece of our town lives within me and it will be difficult to heal. The Great American Picnic was hard to give up, but not like this. Being on the Fourth of July, we shared the Great American Picnic with the rest of the nation. Broomfield Days is uniquely our own and will be mourned until it comes back bigger and better next year.
