EDITOR FROM THE Our Spring
It sure seems that Spring took its sweet time this year, but finally, there are signs! Green blades of grass are poking up amongst the brown, and buds are appearing on many trees. I was awakened by birds the other morning,
and then I caught a few fixin’ to make a nest in the wreath on my front door. I don’t have the heart to displace them. They nested there last year and so we avoided using the front door until the baby birds were ready to try their wings! I am expecting to see a fully built nest in a matter of days, and I look forward to once again watching through the window as the mama nests, lays her eggs, and feeds the babies until they are ready to fly.
It is a very temporary, but very important home. For humans, our homes are generally much longer term and equally important. My husband and I have lived in our home for 28 years now! It was the “starter home” that we planned to keep for four or five years, but the family grew and the years passed, and staying made the most sense. One day you turn around and the home that was so crowded with active teenagers is suddenly quiet and empty, and seems to expand in size overnight! Our modest starter home is now the vessel for most of our family memories, the place our daughters come back to, and the place where we will likely stay until one of us can no longer walk up and down the stairs!
When we bought the house 28 years ago, it was only 3 years old! The funny thing is that part of me still thinks of our house as “new,” but the years are beginning to show for sure. It is time to repair and update and replace many things. The list is quite overwhelming and I am impatient to get through the “must do” part of the list and start on the “nice to do” part. The many companies that we are highlighting in this issue, our annual Home Issue, make me antsy to jump into some of these projects. And it is Spring! So that is what we do. Like that bird on my porch. It is time to nest, and refresh, and prepare our homes for “what’s next.” Celebrations, comings and goings, visitors, and the seasons ahead.
If your Spring plans include Home Improvement, please consider patronizing some of the many Our Broomfield partners highlighted in this issue.
Happy Spring and thanks for reading,

BUSY FAMILIES
LAUGHTER
By Lisa PayneLet us talk about laughter for a minute. It’s been on my mind a lot lately as I’ve been navigating a lot of down time due to a surgery.
There have been situations pop up, as they do in everyday life, where we can be irritated or choose to laugh about it.
I have the best friends and family. They have been taking good care of us while I lay low for a few weeks. The biggest gift to us has been all the meals. My husband does not cook. But what he must do each morning is make lunches for the kids. My guy can run a company effortlessly without showing stress, but ask him to make four lunches and it is like he was told he has ten seconds to diffuse a bomb.
The other morning, I was on the couch, a full hour before the kids had to be at school. I asked him to come sit with me and he was like “heck no I have LUNCHES to make.” And once he gets started there is no interrupting, no changes to be suggested, no jokes to be made. It is all serious because this is not his comfort zone and he wants to do it well.
On this particular morning, kids started coming down for breakfast and I wanted to make light of the chaos going on in the kitchen. This is my moment to choose between two things. Be irritated that cooking stresses him out or make light of it. Well, I chose light.
So, during his lunch making frenzy, and in my typical speak before you think, I told the kids it was their lucky day and that dad was going to make them any kind of breakfast they wanted that morning. Just say the word and it was theirs! (Pause, pause, pause, oh shoot, why did I just say that to the bomb diffuser?)
And then my hubby had the same decision where he could have been irritated right back at me or make light. And lucky for me he chose light. He relaxed, started laughing and was like yep whatever you want kids. I’ve got this.
Another example. The floors have not been vacuumed since surgery.
There were brownie crumbs on the family room carpet. My tired husband, who has been so busy taking care of everything kept saying yeah, I will vacuum soon. Several days later we noticed the brownie crumbs were gone without vacuuming. Instead of being irritated that they are now drug all over the house, we laughed about where they could be. Maybe on the bottom of socks? Whose socks? Maybe the kids wore them to the neighbor’s house and they now have our crumbs? Did Cooper our pup finally eat them? We entertained ourselves for a while on this topic and decided why ever vacuum again if things magically disappear.
So many times in life we have the choice. Do we stress or make light? Once you make the decision to choose laughter it’s freeing. It’s fun to come up with ways to laugh at something that would normally make you feel stress. It can even become a competition between spouses as to who is funnier. And the health benefits to a good belly laugh are endless!
It’s easy to laugh when we feel good, but it’s when we feel bad that we need it the most. I wish for you extra laughter on your cloudiest days this month and always.

Get Ready for Broomfield’s 2023 Spring Cleanup
By The City and County of BroomfieldOne of Broomfield’s favorite traditions is officially back, giving residents a chance to clean things up! Spring Cleanup is an opportunity provided by the City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) for Broomfield residents to dispose of large, non-hazardous waste items not normally picked up by trash haulers.
The City and County of Broomfield has offered curbside pickup through the annual Spring Cleanup Program since 2005. The program helps keep neighborhoods free of debris, reduces the amount of illegal dumping on streets and in back alleys, and helps reduce fire and safety hazards by decluttering properties.
Broomfield is divided into four areas for Spring Cleanup, which is tentatively scheduled for four consecutive Saturdays: April 22 and 29, and May 6 and 13. Residents must place items for pickup onto the curb outside their home by 7:00 a.m on their designated Saturday. Find which Saturday waste haulers will be in your neighborhood at Broomfield.org/SpringCleanup.
Waste items accepted during Spring Cleanup include scrap metal, carpet, doors, non-freon appliances (such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, and hot water heaters), furniture, mattresses and box springs, bicycles, barbeque grills without propane tanks attached, and more.
Be sure to avoid setting out unaccepted items, such as any electronic items (such as televisions, computers and DVD players), appliances with a Freon unit (such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners), liquids of any type, household hazardous waste, medical waste, and single items that cannot be lifted by two people. For a complete list of unacceptable items that won’t be taken, visit Broomfield.org/SpringCleanup.
Items not accepted in Spring Cleanup can still be disposed of properly. If you have household hazardous waste including electronic waste, liquid waste or other items not accepted during Spring Cleanup, visit Broomfield.org/HHW for
more information on how to dispose of these items. The next Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste Disposal event is in May with CCOB starting to take appointments in April.
While Spring Cleanup is an opportunity for residents to get rid of large trash items, it is not about pushing everything into the nearest landfill. All items set out as waste will be sorted so recyclable materials such as metal and untreated woods can be properly recycled and reused.
Spring Cleanup is also your opportunity to donate items that can be reused. The City and County of Broomfield is teaming up with ARC Thrift Stores to give residents the chance to donate directly from their homes. Acceptable reusable items include clothing, household goods, reusable furniture, and more. These items must be placed in a separate location visible from the street on the designated Saturday by 7:00 a.m. and clearly marked “ARC.”
Now is the perfect time to get ready for Spring Cleanup. Consider going through your basement, garage, attic, backyard, and any other places where seldom-used items might accumulate. For more information about Spring Cleanup including the specific date of Spring Cleanup in your neighborhood, what items can and cannot be set out as waste, and how to mark items for pickup from the ARC, visit Broomfield.org/SpringCleanup.

Dedicated BHS Parents Prepare for Annual After Prom Extravaganza
April 15
JAM is a Safe, Drug- and Alcohol-Free Celebration
The countdown to graduation day for Broomfield High School’s senior class has begun, but first comes Prom followed by the much-anticipated JAM!! This year, JAM (Just After Midnight) will be held on April 15, from 11:45 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. This year’s theme is closely guarded but you can get a sneak peek at the community walk through that night from 7:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m.
JAM is Broomfield High School’s after prom party – a drug- and alcohol-free extravaganza JAM packed with games, gambling, food, and fun. Students don’t even have to go to Prom to come celebrate at JAM with their classmates. The event is open to all Juniors and Seniors and their dates.
This year entertainment will include large inflatables, a casino, old school arcade games, tarot card readers, caricature and henna artists, and food – lots of food. When asked what she is looking forward to at this year’s JAM, BHS Senior Liz Durham said, “The food is gas! The inflatables are top tier! It’s always fun finding out the theme!”
The theme is always revealed at the aforementioned community walk through. In fact, it was at the community walk that this year’s co-chair Ericka Pazol knew she wanted to become involved with the event when the time came. She attended one of the
By Missy Ruzickacommunity walk throughs when her kids were younger and found herself in awe of the amazing decorating that occurred every year. So, when her oldest became a freshman she knew she wanted to be a part of all things JAM!
Since 1990 a large team made up of dedicated parents like Erica and her 2023 co-chair Heather Dunham, along with fantastic teachers, and supportive community members come together to produce JAM. “Working closely with friends and BHS staff, and to watch the community come together is exciting. We have an amazing community that we are lucky to be a part of.”
It takes a special community indeed to put JAM together for the kids and without the dedication of many volunteers it wouldn’t be the major success it has been for the last 33 years. The JAM committee works all year planning, designing, staging, and decorating for the event which alters the look of the interior of the school so much, sometimes the kids don’t even recognize it. The students love being surprised by the theme and the creative decorations
that leave their school so completely transformed they have a hard time guessing where they are in the school. Everyone from neighborhood dentists, tattoo parlors, restaurants, car dealers, realtors, to event and recreation centers come together to donate and sponsor this event so our high schoolers can have a fun, safe, and memorable night. Sill-TerHar Motors and Infinitus Pie (iPIE) are just some of the hundreds of JAM’s longtime supporters. Volunteers are still needed to help set up and run the event and any amount of time you could give would be much appreciated. All are welcome to help, even if you don’t have a BHS student.

By Kristen BeckmanFFRIENDS of Broomfield will host its fourth-annual Topgolf Tournament April 30 at Topgolf in Thornton to raise funds for transportation needs. The organization first hosted the tournament in 2020.
FRIENDS of Broomfield is a nonprofit agency that provides person-centered programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It began in 1998 as a grassroots parent advocacy network intended to better the lives of their children with developmental disabilities.
This year, funds raised through the tournament will help the organization purchase a new bus. The total cost of the bus is expected to be about $90,000, but thanks to an anonymous match, only $45,000 still needs to be raised.
“This event, in particular, is important as we need to raise funds for transportation to continue carrying out our mission of enhancing communities by creating opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Rabin Walters, FRIENDS development officer. “Our participants need access to FRIENDS and their community. Without transportation, our participants and our community would be hindered in their ability to accomplish career goals and lifelong dreams, create new experiences, and strengthen their life skills for growth toward independence.”
Tournament participants will be treated to an All American Lunch Buffet, a presentation about FRIENDS, a team tournament and awards and prizes at the end of the event. The first game played is the score that will be recorded, but players are welcome to continue playing for fun if time allows. Prizes will include Best Team, Best Male Golfer, and Best Female Golfer. There will also be a drawing for one three-month Topgolf Platinum Membership.
Last year, the tournament had 20 teams. This year, FRIENDS is hoping to increase to 25-30 teams.
“With many of the attendees at Topgolf being associated with our corporate sponsors, this is a great way to build
your network, while impacting the lives of our Friends with intellectual and developmental disabilities and enjoying a fun afternoon of golf, food, and drinks,” said Walters.
Fundraising is essential to the programs at FRIENDS, including day, residential, supported employment, and social and travel programs. The day program, for example, provides up to 40 classes per week, including transportation, and the organization also offers weekend trips around Colorado and extended domestic and international trips. These programs are primarily funded through Medicaid, but that only covers about 70 percent to 75 percent of costs.
“We as an organization have to fundraise the other 25-30 percent through events and other avenues,” said Walters.
Upcoming ‘FRIENDraisers’ include a luncheon and fashion show this summer and a variety show in the fall.
Registration for the Topgolf tournament closes April 21. If you cannot make the tournament, but would still like to make a gift that will be matched dollar for dollar, please visit https:// www.friendsofbroomfield.org/items/tgappeal2023.
Celebrate FISH’s 60th Anniversary and Legacy of Helping Broomfield Neighbors in Need
By Lisa PayneThis year marks the 60th anniversary of Broomfield’s FISH (Fellowship in Serving Humanity), founded by women from six different local churches who originally called themselves “Church Women United.” The founders saw a need in the community, and in their first year helped residents with food, rides to appointments, and toys for children at Christmas.
What started out as an organization that served 25 families that first year, has now grown six decades later to a large Food Bank and Family Resource Center serving more than 12,000
unduplicated people per year. That is one in seven Broomfield residents! According to Maggie Sava, the Communications and Media Manager at FISH, the organization was initially run out of people’s homes and operated that way until 1977.
“The mission statement at the time was ‘to give assistance and comfort to anyone needing help and to provide such non-professional services as are necessary and possible’” said Sava. She added that FISH’s mission statement has since changed but the goal remains similar. “To meet our neighbors’ basic human needs and provide them with hope and tools to rise out of poverty.”
Due to a very generous lease agreement with the City and County of Broomfield, FISH has been operating out of 6 Garden
Center since 2017. The space has enabled FISH to provide a costfree, self-shop marketplace where families can pick out their food with dignity and choice.
The space also enables FISH to spend less on overhead expenses, allowing them to use 93 cents of every dollar donated directly for the families they serve.
And let’s not forget the volunteers! Sava states that volunteers are the heart and soul of the organization, and FISH’s work would not be possible without the vital support. During the 2022 Fiscal Year, FISH had about 1,000 people volunteer giving roughly 20,000 volunteer hours collectively. These neighbors helping neighbors made the Broomfield community truly remarkable!
Sava went on to say that while FISH is best known as a food pantry, they also offer services such as emergency rent, utilities, transportation assistance, referrals to partner organizations, and strengths-based one-on-one support to help families thrive.
One grateful FISH family was quoted saying, “I feel like crying every time I go to FISH because I am so grateful for the things I am able to get for my family in these rough times.”
Another participant said, “The people at FISH make my family feel truly welcome … the food is critical to my family’s health, but the people are the best part. When we are there we do not feel like a poor family needing to use a food bank. We feel like we are
their favorite visitors getting sent home with food and JOY!”
There are different ways the community can help support FISH and celebrate with them! One important way is to become a monthly donor. This is a budget friendly way to help prevent hunger and homelessness in the Broomfield community. You can also volunteer your time in different capacities. More details about both options can be found on the website www.broomfieldfish.org.
But most importantly show your support by helping FISH celebrate six decades of feeding families and fueling hope! The 60th Anniversary celebration is June 22, 2023, at 6 Garden Center in Broomfield from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome! Mark your calendars now!

Coverwell Provides Necessary and Worthwhile Home Improvement –Basement Window Well Covers
By Bette EricksonW“We love what we do, and once your covers are installed, we know you will be happy with the results,” explained Sandra Bay. “Once you put on Coverwell covers, you will never have to buy window well covers again.”
That is right. We’re talking about basement window well covers. It is a home improvement product that you may not give too much thought to until you unexpectedly get a small, helpless critter down there, or accumulate a pile of leaves and debris.
Mark and Sandra Bay founded Coverwell back in 2009 and the company has steadily grown ever since.
The Denver company now employs 12 people, including salespeople, warehouse production staff, office workers, and installers. Coverwell specializes in window well covers
only. The high-quality product is made from a custom clear polycarbonate and is supported by a proprietary aluminum support system that won’t rust. The cover is UV protected, so it won’t yellow, and the product can withstand up to 800 pounds.
“Our custom window well covers are produced in our 6,000 square foot facility utilizing a state-of-theart CNC mill to accurately cut our covers to the specifications of your window wells,” Bay explained.
Whether your house is old or new, benefits of Coverwell custom window well covers include allowing natural light in, keeping all the debris and water out, and the fact that they are as strong as the typical metal grates that are so often seen on basement window wells.
“We love helping our customers make their homes and yards safe for their children, pets, and foundations,” Bay added. “Our years of experience allow us to address any situation that leaves our competitors shaking their heads.”
Plus, Coverwell window well covers are sleek and good looking, too, enhancing the appeal of your home.
As we all know, Colorado offers a variety of sometimes crazy weather, but Coverwell products will not break due to heavy snow, hail or rain. The covers protect your family from injury, provide moderate insulation, and keep out small critters.
Bay concluded, we are not a “man in a van with a jigsaw,” we take our business seriously and feel we make the best window well cover for the Denver metro area.
For more information about Coverwell, visit www.Coverwell.com or call 303-425-8818.

Expert Analysis from Christina Surprenaut, RE/MAX
By Kristen BeckmanAAlthough the real estate market continues to have ups and downs, it is showing signs of normalizing compared with the unprecedented growth and pace the market experienced during the past two to three years.
Christina Surprenant, a real estate agent with RE/MAX Momentum, compared recent real estate trends to a rollercoaster ride going 100 miles per hour. A Colorado native, Surprenant is uniquely familiar with the Broomfield real estate market because she lives here with her family. She helped clients sell $40 million of real estate last year, an alltime high not only for herself but also for her company.
Surprenant said both average days on market and price trends are beginning to normalize in Broomfield, and while interest rates are creeping toward 7 percent, they are expected to eventually settle into the mid-5 percent range.
“It’s very rare that we have this type of a market where it’s positive for buyers and positive for the seller,” said Surprenant. “We’re reaching more of a general balance, which is a really nice place to be for everybody.”
The Broomfield market is in a compression phase typical for this time of year, she noted. “We have a lot of buyers coming into our marketplace, but we don’t have enough listings to feed those buyers’ demand. We’re still seeing multiple offers in many cases, and interestingly enough, we’re seeing that activity even over the million-dollar price point.”
Surprenant said home prices continue to increase, though not as steeply as they have in recent years. She expects pricing to increase at a more typical 5 to 6 percent on an annual basis going forward. In addition, days on market have dropped from about three weeks to about one week. Houses priced below $600,000 are still competing heavily with multiple offers over asking price, but the competition is not quite as frenzied with up to 40 buyers competing for the same home as in past years, she said.
During the summer months and into fall, the compression phase typically starts loosening up and stays fairly even through the end of the year, she said.
“Ultimately it’s a great market to be buying and I would say if you can wait toward the end of the year, it’s going to be an ideal market to buy in,” said Surprenant. “If you’re selling, it’s still a great time to sell. It may be that you’re not going to price at the top end of the scale in the third and fourth quarter of the year, but you’re still going to see really solid home value. Values are not wavering.”
For homeowners thinking about selling in the next couple of years, Surprenant said there are a few worthwhile
home projects they can consider now while they are on the sidelines. She encourages homeowners to think about projects that will not only add value but add to their enjoyment of their home while they are still there. An example would be to replace older carpet or flooring, she said.
“Make it something that you love and that you want to live with. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive, glamorous, amazing thing but replace it with something that you’re going to get some enjoyment out of, and that’s a fantastic way to just make your home feel so much more fresh and happy for a buyer.”
She said a fresh coat of updated paint is an inexpensive way to make a home
more appealing to buyers. From a more practical perspective, scoping the home’s sewer line can detect and prevent problems that could be costly when discovered during the contract process of a sale. And in Colorado, having a roofer come out to check for hail damage is usually free and a great way to avoid surprises during an inspection.
Finally, there is no time like the present to clean up and clean out, said Surprenant. “For a lot of my clients planning on making a transition, they start thinking, ‘I’ve lived here for 15 years. I’ve collected all the things!’ Slowly but surely just go ahead and start going through all of those things and start just slowly getting rid of it. If you are making a move across the country do you really want to pay to move all this stuff? Probably not.”
(Pro tip: Broomfield gives residents an opportunity to dispose of large, non-hazardous items that trash haulers do not normally pick up in April and May during the annual Broomfield Spring Cleanup. See page 16 for full details.)

Windo VanGo: Broomfield’s One-Stop for Custom Blinds, Shades, Shutters and Drapery
By Bette EricksonAA couple years ago I decided I needed a refresh on the window coverings in my home office. And because I don’t particularly enjoy shopping and wanted a smooth and effortless experience, I chose Broomfield’s Windo VanGo at 1140 US Hwy 287, Ste. 600 in the Broomfield Marketplace to help.
I knew they had designers available to coach me through the endeavor and installers to finish the task.
It was undoubtedly one of the most pleasant shopping and decision-making experiences of my adult life.
“The Broomfield location is unique to being a Centurion Gallery Dealer - meaning we only carry Hunter Douglas products,” explained Windo VanGo owner Andrew Redenbarger. The company is some 29 years old, with hundreds of repeat customers, which speaks to the trust-worthiness of the organization.
In fact, what convinced me to choose Windo VanGo was their Hunter Douglas portfolio brochure. It’s 65pages of fresh takes, creative ideas, and smart solutions for your windows. Shoppers can access it on the Windo VanGo website. It’s a great resource and representation of the available Hunter Douglas window coverings.
The company only focuses on window coverings, so their expertise is specific and targeted.
Redenbarger today is the president of the company his father Ned Redenbarger founded. Windo VanGo now employs 10 people, including three full-time installers and four sales representatives with a unique eye for design.
“My father always said we solve people problems, be it light control, energy efficiency, or style and design,” Andrew said. “This is what makes my job so much fun - solving peoples’ challenges with their window openings and enhancing their home environment.”
Windo VanGo states that its Duette Honeycomb shades are
their most popular product, providing excellent insulation and energy efficiency. Indeed, Windo VanGo is an approved vendor for customers to apply for an Xcel Energy Rebate. Xcel Energy realizes how well homes are insulated with Duettes.
Customers can save up to $1,200 on eligible Hunter Douglas Duette Honeycomb Shades as part of a federal tax credit that supports the purchase of energy-efficient products. With the largest portfolio of window treatments eligible for the federal tax credit, shoppers can prioritize energy efficiency without compromising style.
“When I see a customer’s smile as they walk in to view the complete look of their design effort, it brings me joy.
Window coverings add the finishing touch to a room, giving it personality,” explained employee Tonya Mecum when asked what her favorite part of her job is.
“All of our customers have different tastes, which makes it fun to assist in bringing their vision to life.”
She also noted the retail store is dog-friendly. “We love dogs,” she exclaimed. “We welcome all dogs to come in and visit with their humans.”

Vintage Eats, Family Treats
Food is good. But food with a story is even better!
By Lisa PayneI have been watching all kinds of cooking shows in my downtime. My new favorite is a show on Discovery+ called “Family Table.” The host, Andrew Zimmerman, travels across America to visit families and explore their culture and traditional family meals. It fascinates me and inspires me to keep old family recipes alive in my own family.
Do you have recipes that have been in your family for generations? Maybe you have family dinner every Sunday? Or, you have traditions around food that you hold on tight to? Don’t ever let them go!
Years ago when my grandma was getting older, I sat down and made a copy of all of her recipes. I put them together in a “cookbook,” made lots of copies, grandma signed each one, and we passed them out to everyone in the family. After she passed it was such a treasure to have.
Today I am sharing recipes that are easy peasy and that kids love to eat too!
Taco Pie
• 1 package crescent rolls
• 1 lb. ground beef
• 1 package taco seasoning of your choice
• 1 bag Doritos, crushed
• 8 ounces sour cream
• 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
• Lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, salsa as toppings
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Strawberry Pretzel Salad
Strawberry Pretzel Salad
Why were recipes that involved Jell-O always called a salad? I mean there were some interesting concoctions out there. Jello-O mixed with peas? Awful.
I did always love this Jell-O salad – it reminds me of potlucks and grandma’s house. It’s not too sweet, and the mix with the salty is fabulous. When I bring it to parties someone always says, “Oh my gosh my grandma used to make this!” A good vintage recipe to keep forever.
• 2 cups crushed pretzels
• ¾ cup butter, melted
• 3 tablespoons white sugar
• 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
• 1 cup white sugar
• 1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
• 2 (3 ounce) packages strawberry flavored Jell-O®
• 2 cups boiling water
• 2 (10 ounce) packages frozen strawberries
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Stir crushed pretzels, melted butter, and 3 tablespoons sugar together until well-combined; mix well and press mixture into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Bake in preheated oven until set, about 8 to 10 minutes; set aside to cool.
Place cream cheese and 1 cup sugar in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth; fold in whipped topping. Spread mixture onto cooled crust. Dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Stir in still-frozen strawberries and allow to set briefly. Pour and spread over cream cheese layer; refrigerate until set, at least 2 hours. Lisa Payne writes about food, family, and home. You can reach her at paynefam6@gmail.com.
Taco Pie
Brown beef into crumbles and season with taco seasoning. Spray a pie pan with canola oil and press the crescent rolls to make a solid crust.
Layer into the crust the ground beef, crushed chips, sour cream, and cheese. Layer until filled to the top.
Bake for 20-30 minutes until crust is nicely browned. Top with any toppings you wish or eat as is.

By Missy RuzickaIn the Fall of 2023, Colorado will see the start of Universal Preschool for all Colorado kids who turn four on or before October 1, and for qualifying 3 years olds. This is exciting news that can save Colorado families an average of up to $6,000 a year. The November 2020 election saw voters approve Proposition EE, which increases taxes on nicotine products and use generated revenue towards health and education programs including preschool funding.
Children in preschool are so busy playing every day they don’t realize they are learning concepts that will help them later in school. Gross motor skills are developed while they play at recess with friends. They advance fine motor skills through painting, drawing, and the use of scissors. Foundations of mathematics begin by rote counting and sorting. Problem solving skills are built while piecing together puzzles and play-
ing board games. Preschool is a language rich environment where a child’s vocabulary expands dramatically. Preschool students work hard every day by playing and falling in love with learning.
The Universal Preschool Program allows families to choose the right half-day (15 hours a week) program for their child, whether it is in a licensed community-based, school-based or at home-based preschool setting. Registration started in January of 2023 and by early March 26,000 families had been matched with one of their requested preschools. There are more than 3,000 applications in process to be matched with the 1,649 licensed and registered providers. Jessica Jones, director of Broomfield Early Childhood Council said it is not too late to sign up and the matching process happens on a rolling schedule multiple times during the registration window.
To register, families can go to the link found at upk.colorado. gov or to Broomfield’s own Broomfield Early Childhood Coun-
cil’s website broomfieldecc.org. There parents can find a list and map of providers to help them choose the schools that fit their family’s needs, from location to services provided. Documents needed for registration are proof of date of birth, residency, and proof of income, if requesting more than 15 hours per week. Families with kids in full-time care will find 15 hours deducted off their tuition bill.
Children who turn three on or before October 1, may be eligible due to qualifying factors, such as low household income, the child is on an IEP (individual education plan), dual language
learner and/or their housing status. These qualifying factors can also help families who need more than 15 hours a week and would like to qualify for 30 hours a week. Please see Broomfield Early Childhood Council’s website for more information on these qualifications.
Broomfield Early Childhood Coun-
cil has close working relationships with all the Broomfield providers and are proud that the quality of standards here in Broomfield are high. The Universal Preschool Program ensures a quality preschool experience can be available to all Colorado’s preschoolers.

Froma young age, I have had two primary loves: human connectedness and music. As a teen, I spent most of my free time babysitting and developing a love specifically for young children. While I was dreaming about a fulfilling career post college graduation, I decided I wanted to start a school grounded primarily in the principle of love. My academic achievements were important to me, but I also knew that humans need love first if they are to achieve their potential, and there was a part of me that wished I had been more grounded in my own sense of self worth.
If I was going to commit my life to anything, it was to doing something to help people know they are valued, loved, cherished, and unique. For more than 20 years, that commitment was
embodied through my work as a parent educator in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Sitting on living room floors with families of young children, I connected with parents as they embraced their role as parents and learned about this new little person in their lives. As our children grew and I had more time to commit to work, I became the Director of our school district’s parent education program and eventually obtained my Master’s Degree in Social Work.
Seemingly out of nowhere, I learned about Bal Swan Children’s Center, and knew that my young adult dream of working in a school grounded in love could be realized! In 2018, I became the Executive Director of Bal Swan Children’s Center, where it is my greatest privilege to lead a place centered on supporting families and young children from a social, emotional, and academic perspective.
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My husband and I met while working for the international non-profit, Up with
People. While working for Up with People, we traveled to cities throughout the world promoting human understanding through service, music, and relationships. With our two children, we carried on many of our passions through involvement in local theatre, long road trips to all corners of our country, and service to our neighbors in need.
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
A: Frolic Brewery and North Side Tavern.
Q: What advice would you give to people? Trust your worthiness, stay grounded in faith, and love those around you.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique that you appreciate about our community?
A: I love Broomfield’s commitment to Open Space.
Q: Who inspires you to be better?
A: My children. I want to demonstrate for them that I can continue to change and grow as I age, and I want to be a model for them.

Avista Hospital’s New Life Birth Center: Where Precious Lives Enter the World
Back in 2017, Avista Adventist Hospital opened up its New Life Birthing Center. The facility is recognized as the area’s preferred birthing center in a hospital that consistently scored among the nation’s top 100 hospitals for patient, physician, and employee satisfaction.
The New Life Center offers a variety of luxuries and necessities for soon to be moms and their families including spacious private birthing suites for labor, delivery, and recovery, that even have a sofa sleeper for a birthing couch, or for excited dads-to-be. Some of Colorado’s most dedicated and knowledgeable doctors and nurses work hard to provide mom and baby with world class care.
Services include 24-hour in-house anesthesia coverage and OB physicians for immediate access. Avista offers the area’s only Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) staffed with round the clock neonatal nurse practitioners for those little ones who need a little extra love and specialized care.
Every mom has a vision of what they want their labor and delivery to be like. At New Life Birth Center, the birthing team is dedicated to working with each family to shape the birth experience by making sure there are few, if any surprises during delivery. Soon to-be parents will decide on things like pain management or if a completely natural childbirth is desired. This is the time to let the team know if there are important cultural or spiritual rituals to honor. The team is there to help with things like who will be in the room when the big moment arrives, sibling visiting hours, and if the spouse will stay the night.
The journey begins with a tour of the state-of-the-art facility, which once again is now offered in person for the first time since March of 2020. Avista also offers a wide range of classes taught by experienced nurses and certified childbirth educators to prepare new parents. Childbirth preparation classes will give parents a sense of what labor is going to be like, comforting tech-
niques to use and how the brith partner can help in every part of the process. Breastfeeding classes cover the essentials of breastfeeding in an interactive online course. Newborn classes help parents learn what to expect in caring for baby for the first six weeks and beyond. Other classes offered include; Infant/Child CPR, sibling preparedness, and even a daddy boot camp for dads who want to know as much as possible.
Avista Hospital’s New Life Birth Center has repeatedly earned the “Women’s Choice” Award as a Top 100 Hospital for both patient experience and obstetrics. At Avista Hospital, they are committed to your baby’s health and wellbeing, and support the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrics, and Neonatal Nurses.
