Our October

I love fall! After a long, hot summer, the cooling temperatures and the contrasting warmth of the beautiful changing leaves is quite welcome. My husband and I first started dating in October and both of our daughters were born in October. These are just a few reasons why I love this month.

Our Pet Issue

The October issue is traditionally our pet issue! This year we received more pet photo submissions than ever before and we are proud to recognize our cover winner Luna, owned by Uyen Harris. What an adorable pup! We included as many photos as we could throughout this issue along with several pet-related articles of interest. Enjoy the cuddly cuteness and thanks for sending in your photos and joining in the fun. My beautiful boy Ollie is exempt from winning the contest due to his family connection … so I’ll just share a photo of him here instead.

Our Town Square

On Page 20 in this issue you can learn more about the recent unanimous City Council vote to move forward with the Broomfield Town Square. The long awaited project has been stalled for a bit but seems to be revived. Watch our pages for more information as project details come to light.

Our Favorites Voting

Before the November election arrives, don’t forget to cast your vote in the 2022 Our Broomfield Our Favorites Survey! We want to know which businesses in Broomfield are your favorites. The Our Broomfield reader survey is conducted online from August through October 15 and promoted in this magazine, as well as on our Facebook and Instagram pages. There is still time to vote for your favorite Broomfield businesses at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/OurFavorites2022 or simply scan the QR code with your smartphone camera. Thanks for reading,

INSPIRATION FOR

BUSY FAMILIES

WHY WE LOVE OUR PETS

There is a lot of research out there about the strong impact the human-animal bond has on the overall health of both pet owner and pet. It is a mutually beneficial relationship that is both special and meaningful. Here are many ways that pets improve our lives!

LAUGHTER. Have you ever watched your dog chase its tail or run around like crazy with another dog? Or maybe you’ve seen your dog sneak past you with your favorite shoe or give you a sad face when you bust them stealing food off the table. There are so many pet videos online that crack us up. Laughter is always the best medicine.

GOOD COMPANY. Pet owners are generally less lonely, especially as empty nesters. There is a special bond that is created when you take care of a pet. The relationship blossoms and you become inseparable. As a senior citizen, the benefits from owning a pet increase exponentially.

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. Pets are the only thing in our lives that truly love us unconditionally. We can forget to feed them, accidentally kick them when they get under our feet or neglect walking them and they still love us as much as when we spend all day loving on them. Their simple, loving nature is something we can all aspire to exhibit more in our day to day lives.

LESS STRESS. Anyone who owns a pet has experienced the calming effect they can have on us after a long, stressful day. Perhaps we relax by petting our pets, gazing into an aquarium or playing fetch with our cat. All daily rituals like this can reduce heart rate, lower blood pressure, and bring a huge smile to our faces.

BOOM BOOM

KOTA & LANI

EXERCISE! How many times would we have sat on the couch before or after work if we didn’t have a dog to walk? I know that the only reason I get out and exercise is because my dog follows me around with a sad face until we walk. He knows the routine and isn’t about to let me forget it. I am so thankful for this reminder to move my body. As my lab gets older and his arthritis sets in, I am also reminded that when he moves his body he feels so much better. It’s a win win!

SOCIAL CONNECTION. How many times have you been on a walk with your furry pet and they find a friend to sniff? You then start talking to the other pet owner and form a connection. And walking a puppy is a magnet for attention! It seems every human in a ten-mile radius stops to ooooh and ahhhh over your puppy. I bet lifelong friendships and marriages have started over puppies.

PROTECTION. Some pets are able to sniff out life-threatening conditions like seizures, cancerous tumors, and toxic allergens. They also can assist you in rehabilitation after an illness or injury. They also can bring a huge sense of comfort if they warn you of intruders and potential disasters using their highly-tuned sixth sense.

There are so many ways pets improve our lives, and so many ways your love and attention also benefit your pet in return. Go snuggle your buddy and thank them for reminding you every day that you are loved.

New Building on 1st Ave. Will Mark Next Chapter for Broomfield’s Sill-TerHar Motors

When you think about the foundation of Broomfield business, it is impossible to talk about Broomfield’s beginnings without mentioning Sill-TerHar Motors, and the iconic original location on the corner of Hwy 287 and West 1st Ave. is a major part of that history.

Volvo, Jaguar, and other luxury pre-owned vehicles. The business now covers three acres, with four buildings and six showrooms.

Today Jack is retired, but Sill-TerHar Motors still enjoys “being a small familyowned dealership because it affords us the luxury of treating our customers as friends instead of profits,” and “prides itself on being dedicated to customer service, while offering competitive pricing and a great and varied selection.”

These are strong values for a family business serving the community for over 60 years, now under the leadership of another son of Broomfield, Partner Greg Larson. Greg joined Sill-TerHar Motors in 2002 as a manager and now leads the organization.

Selling Ford, Mazda, Lincoln, Volvo, and Masserati, Sill-TerHar Motors today is the 8th largest new car dealer in the state. Greg said, the dealership is “Big enough to serve, small enough to care.”

“Reputation and philanthropy are the fabric of the business. This was Jack and Penny’s (TerHar’s) philosophy and it remains our approach,” said Greg.

This summer Sill-TerHar Motors embarked on a major new chapter with the move to rebuild and reimagine the original building. “We are creating the Mazda Retail Evolution Facility.”

“On June 15 we held Demo Day and threw gold painted rocks through the windows, to mark the occasion. Groundbreaking on the new facility was on July 1,” told Greg. “It is bittersweet to tear down a legacy building. This was a place where many, many Broomfield families grew.”

“The car business is a necessary evil, you need a car like you need a dentist … so it is good to have someone you like and trust, someone who treats you like family. It is good to have a good relationship with good chemistry. That’s what we offer our customers,” he said.

The new Mazda facility at the original location will be a two-story “jewel box” showcase display for new vehicles. It will have the first-ever women’s technician changing room, which is just one example of how the facility design will be progressive in providing what employees and customers need today. “We will offer technology and comfort and all of the latest that Mazda has to offer,” said Greg.

The new Mazda facility is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2023, with a full demo of the original building in the second quarter of 2023.

At 62-years-old the long-standing Broomfield business was started by Hugo Sill and Jack TerHar, Sr. in 1960 when Highway 287 was a two-lane dirt road, and 120th was the major throughway to Denver. Jack TerHar Jr. started selling cars for his father at Sill-TerHar in 1973, shortly after graduating from Broomfield High School and completed a buyout of the dealership in 1989, later overseeing a major expansion of the business and the addition of several car lines.

In 2002 Sill-TerHar completed its Premier Automotive Group building which housed Aston Martin,

“The automotive business has evolved more dramatically in the last two years than in the last 20 years,” explained Greg. “Covid was a major impact, but electrification is a big part of this too. Volvo plans to have a full electric line by 2026, Lincoln by 2028, and Ford by 2030.”

“The new building will be all about the customer experience. Electric charging will be part of it.This is an evolution of what we sell and how we sell it with a total focus on service delivery and the customer experience. There are still customers who want to come in, but customers want instant service on their terms. Transactions and service have changed and our technicians and sales teams need to be trained to meet customer expectations now,” he said. The new facility will support that.

Greg concluded, “Buying local still has its benefits and privileges; relationships and time savings. That is what Sill-TerHar offers.”

WHAT DOES “Aging Well”MEAN TO YOU?

What do you think of when you hear the word “wellness?” Does the definition change when you consider what it might mean to someone 60 years or older?

The City and County of Broomfield (CCOB) Senior Services department is preparing for the annual Living in Balance Resource Fair on October 21. Now is a great time to revisit the many different ways people are impacted by the various programs and services offered. The six focus areas of the wellness fair are purpose, nutrition, physical, emotional, intellectual, and social.

Many older adults find transitioning from work to retired life provides a new opportunity to redefine themselves and their purpose. One way to cultivate a strong sense of purpose is volunteering! Senior Services offers a variety of ways to volunteer including Meals On Wheels delivery, meal prep, special event support, and administrative work. All of these positions impact the greater community in important ways.

The nutrition we choose impacts our health significantly. The Meals On Wheels program ensures older adults who are not able to cook for themselves receive fresh, nutritious meals delivered by volunteers to their home. The Lakeshore Café at the Broomfield Community Center (BCC) also serves these delicious meals in the dining room overlooking Brunner Reservoir every weekday. Each month there’s a birthday lunch, two healthy hearts lunches, and special events with entertainment.

Being active and moving the body is not only a physical benefit, it also helps our brains. CCOB organizes a wide range of physical wellness activities from traditional fitness classes to aqua aerobics, line dancing, ballroom dances (such as the Fall Ball dance on Oct. 27), golf leagues, and the Healthy Hearts Walking Club.

There are eight support groups who meet regularly at the Broomfield Community Center ready to offer emotional support for challenging situations. These groups focus on grief, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease, and more. There are also groups for caregivers helping loved ones with some difficulties. In addition, the Caregiver Respite Program offers a break for caregivers who are supporting loved ones in a significant way.

It is important to keep your intellect sharp. CCOB offers many card playing groups, including bridge, mahjong, canasta, as well as an Adult Book Club, discussion groups, creative programs, educational seminars, and personal growth workshops.

There is no doubt that connecting with people socially is imperative to overall health and wellness. Social connection is the backbone of wellness. Spend time with other seniors by taking part in CCOB’s programs.

Don’t forget Broomfield Senior Services offers a free transportation service, Easy Ride, for those 60+ and individuals with disabilities. All riders must be registered prior to scheduling. Learn more about the service and register by calling 303-464-5534.

Come to the Living in Balance Resource Fair on October 21 to explore what “aging well” means to you and to connect with programs and services offered through Broomfield Senior Services. Register on B-REx.com or by calling Broomfield Senior Services at 303-464-5526.

ELECTION SECURITY

BROOMFIELD Election Security by City and County Clerk’s Office

Election Day is November 8

We are so lucky here in the United States to be given the right to vote, the right to let our voices be heard. It doesn’t matter who you vote for as long as you take the time to cast your vote for what you believe in. Whether it’s a big national race or a small-town election, your vote counts, and it’s important that we all get the chance to have our voices heard.

Fall is in the air, leaves are starting to change, and soon signs will be popping up all along our roadways letting us know who is running for what this election cycle. The Broomfield City and County Clerk wants you to know it’s not too late to register to vote, in fact you can register on election day. In order to be able to vote you must be at least 18 years old by the date of the election, a U.S. Citizen, a resident of Colorado for at least 22 days, and not currently serving a sentence for a felony conviction. Sixteen- and seventeen-year-olds may pre-register to vote and then will be sent a mail-in ballot automatically as soon as they are eligible.

If you have a valid Colorado driver’s license you may register to vote online at www. GoVoteColorado.gov. There you can easily change your address, party affiliation, or request to receive your ballot by mail. All eligible Colorado voters are automatically mailed a ballot this year beginning October 17.

There has been a lot of discussion about voter fraud and security of our votes recently, and our own Elections Manager Penny Norman explained that election security is taken very seriously. The security and integrity of each election is protected by:

• Colorado’s statewide voter registration database: ensures voter only receives and returns one ballot.

• Ballot envelope signature verification: verifies each ballot returned is from the correct voter.

• Ballot transport and processing protocol: returned ballots are monitored at all times by video surveillance and election judge teams of different political affiliations.

• Public Pre-election logic and accuracy test: ensures integrity of voting system.

• Public Post-election risk limiting audit: verifying votes were counted correctly.

• Cybersecurity: Ballot scanning and tabulation equipment is not connected to the internet and cannot be hacked.

The office has prioritized security as they understand it is essential so citizens can trust the election outcome. “We are continually enhancing our security posture by adopting advanced security procedures, technologies, and innovations that protect the sanctity of votes and voter information.  Our office also believes that our work to enhance election security will be most effective when the voting public understands it; meaningful transparency strengthens our democracy. We must communicate what we are doing so our community can have a deeper understanding of what the threats are, and how we can actively work to mitigate them.”

Colorado is a “first ballot” state, meaning that once a ballot is accepted by an elections division no other ballot will be accepted for that individual. If you would like to vote in person, ADA machines are available, and election judges are there to assist you. You can confidently make your voice heard this election year knowing our Elections Division is keeping our election safe.

One Step Closer to Broomfield’s Downtown

With a unanimous City Council vote Tuesday, September 13, in favor of developing Broomfield’s library complex, we’re another step closer to creating a “downtown.”

If you’ve lived in the City and County of Broomfield any length of time, you’ve no doubt heard or even sung the chorus, “We need a downtown! We need a gathering place.” And when residents exclaim that or similar sentiments, what they mean is improving the area making up the Civic Center complex.

Enhancing the acreage near the library has been on the City Council’s radar for going on two decades.

Developers have heard the plea.

An enlarged lake offering multiple use recreation, framing the west side of the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Library is just one of the amenities proposed by the Broomfield Town Square Alliance, LLC and City Street Ventures. Also included in the proposal is improving the 39 acres located north of 1st Avenue and east of Main Street with upwards of 643 residential units phased over time and some 187,000 square feet of commercial development, which

may include retail, restaurants, office, entertainment, and civic uses.

At last month’s City Council meeting, the Broomfield City Council Chambers were packed (including overflow lobby seating) with community members and stakeholders, including Broomfield Chamber President and CEO Pat Monacelli along with Board Chair John Waters.

“We believe the Town Square will be good for our community and good for the overall health and vibrancy of our Broomfield business community,” the two wrote to their Chamber membership, encouraging participation and attendance at the September 13 City Council meeting.

Included in the development is the conversion of the vacant Safeway building (over 60,000 sq. ft.) into the Broomfield Central Market. The market may have a mix of chefinspired cuisine and local retailers.

Throughout the years and even more recently, hundreds of community members and residents have spoken out both in favor and against the aggressive re-development of the area.

“I’m excited about the development and disappointed that it may not go through,” explained Broomfield resident Lacey McGinty prior to the council meeting. She and her husband are raising their family here and generally spend a great deal of money elsewhere, outside of Broomfield, she said.

“We ride our bikes, visit playgrounds, walk the open spaces, but when we are ready to shop, dine or enjoy a show, we don’t stay in Broomfield,” she explained. She and her husband, along with other Broomfield families, spend money in surrounding municipalities. Many of the remarks made at the council meeting last month confirmed that others share Ms. McGinty’s sentiment.

With a majority of public comment in support of the project, there were still a few community members not yet 100% on-board with the Broomfield Town Square proposal.

Despite the potential benefits of increasing housing stock in an otherwise housing inventory drought, the project feels removed from its original intent, expressed lifelong Broomfield resident and former City Councilmember Liz LawEvans in a letter to City Council.

“What the applicant has brought before you is not the community’s vision,” she wrote. “I am, and have been for a long time, in favor of the community’s original vision of a gathering

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | October 202220

place for all of Broomfield, including unique Mom and Pop restaurants, gathering places, and medium-density housing.”

Understandably, the community, city staff, and others are not happy with how long it’s taken for the project to come to fruition.

The PUD Plan (the custom zoning plan for the property) presented last month sets the development framework for the acreage in terms of uses, building heights, setbacks, and the layout of the development parcels relative to area roadways.

Previously, on January 24, 2022, the LURC (Land Use Review Commission) recommended approval of the proposed PUD Plan by a vote of 6 to 0 with no conditions.

Additionally, the proposal meets City Council’s priorities including affordable housing, economic vitality, and sustainability, all concepts presented in the 2007 and 2016 Civic Center Master Plans, and also meets some long-range financial goals.

Provides Extra Dose of Comfort in Medical Settings Pet Therapy

People and domesticated animals are drawn to each other. When we see someone with a cute puppy or a handsome, stately dog walking the trails or at the park, it can be difficult to resist approaching for a closer look and a pat on the head. And how else can you explain the popularity of cat videos?

In the medical care setting, the human-animal bond can be a mutually beneficial relationship that improves the physical, social, and emotional lives of both the animal and the patient. The Avista pet therapy program exists just for this purpose.

About Avista Animal Helpers

• The program has provided therapy dog visits to patients and staff at Avista Hospital since 2011.

• Currently the program includes all types of breeds and mixes, small to large dogs. We are interested in dogs who love people, enjoy pets and hugs, don’t bark, and have good manners, especially in a hospital environment.

• Before being admitted to the program, each handler is required to pass a background screening and hospital orientation.

• Each dog must pass a series of evaluations, an annual veterinary health check, and be nationally certified through Alliance of Therapy Dogs

• Our dogs are required to visit at least twice a month; some visit as often as once every week.

• Our yearly calendar showcases one of our therapy dogs each month, as well as pictures from our annual picnic. We sell calendars in the fall in the hospital lobby and gift shop as a fundraiser for our Therapy Dog Program.

• Our therapy dogs offer non-verbal, non-judgement acceptance.

• Our therapy dog teams are excited to be back at work to share their love and comfort with our staff and patients

The Avista staff has commented that it is great to see the therapy dogs especially on days that are busy and stressful. They make everyone smile and relax, at least for a few minutes.

The patients love a dog visit. It makes them remember the dog they have at home, and provides a distraction and a bright spot in their day.

Physical benefits of therapy dog visits in the hospital:

They can:

• lower blood pressure

• improve cardiovascular health

• help release calming endorphins (oxytocin)

• help lower overall physical pain

• lift spirits and lessen depression

• provide comfort

• reduce anxiety

• help reduce overall loneliness

Wag N’ WashKeeps Pets Lookingand Feeling Great

Michael Schreiber fell in love with Colorado in 1988 after a skiing vacation in Steamboat Springs, and he vowed someday he would make Colorado his home. Following a three-decade career working at the Chicago Board of Trade and in the telecommunications industry, Schreiber decided four years ago to make good on his promise to himself.

space. It also plans to offer a new online ordering platform through a new website with auto order capabilities and free delivery. Schreiber said prices will remain low, monthly sale specials will continue, and customer service will remain its top priority.

Schreiber chose Broomfield to open Wag N’ Wash because of its proximity to Denver and Boulder, which he said allows it to serve surrounding cities and represent Broomfield in the broader community.

“Unlike other stores where it feels like the wash was an afterthought and placed in the back of the store somewhere, we built our business around the self-pet wash, which can’t be limited to just dogs since Wag N’ Wash has had neighbors wash cats, pigs, and even a goat,” said Schreiber. “We offer six state-of-the-art wash tubs and separate drying stations and supply everything a pet parent needs to get their pet clean.”

Schreiber said he has loved animals for as long as he can remember, but he did not have a dog of his own growing up. When he adopted his first dog in 1993, he spent time learning about the importance of a proper diet for his new family member.

Combining his love for animals and his desire to improve the health and happiness of people and their pets, Schreiber opened Wag N’ Wash Natural Pet Food and Grooming at 1100 U.S. Highway 287 in Broomfield. The franchise celebrated its fourth birthday last month on September 21.

“We knew we wanted to begin our entrepreneurial journey with a pet concept,” said Schreiber. “We believe in Wag N’ Wash’s culture and atmosphere. We aim to provide a one-stop-shop where pet owners can ‘wash ‘em, feed ‘em, spoil ‘em, and love ‘em’ all in one cool place.”

Wag N’ Wash has been undergoing a store remodel, which will be complete by mid-Fall, and that will allow it to carry 40 percent more product and food choices without sacrificing open floor

For pet parents who prefer a full-service groom, Wag N’ Wash holds its professionals to a high standard, putting the health and wellness of every animal in its care first and always striving to provide show-quality grooms.

Its retail offerings consist of all-natural pet food, treats and supplements to keep pets healthy and happy, along with quality toys, collars, leashes, harnesses, and just about anything a pet parent might need for their dog or cat.

In addition, Wag N’ Wash carries baked goods that are made with human-grade ingredients with no corn, soy or added salt and sugar. Cakes, cupcakes, and cookies are available for special occasions, such as celebrating a rescued pup on its gotcha day and for birthdays.

Schreiber and his team enjoy engaging with the community, including offering photo sessions with Santa and the Easter Bunny as well as a kissing booth for Valentine’s Day. The store also does adoption events, teeth cleaning, and vaccination clinics as often as possible throughout the year. You can find the Wag N’ Wash team at many community events including Broomfield Days and Taste It.

Schreiber and his wife, Lisa, live in Broomfield with their rescued Saint Bernard/Boxer mix Finnegan, who they joke is the store’s official treat shoplifter.

Integrating PET SPACES & PEOPLE PLACES IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN

People invest a lot of time, money, and effort into their landscaping. So when a beloved furry family member tears it apart, it can be frustrating.

Deryn Davidson, horticulture extension agent for Colorado State University, recommends working with your pets’ habits – both good and bad – when creating functional spaces for pets that are also beautiful for people.

“If you think about it, dogs use the yard all year round. They’re usually outside in the yard more than any other member of the household,” said Davidson during a monthly CSU Extension gardening webinar on petfriendly landscaping. “They know the good spots to hang out in the shade. They know the good spots to be in the sun in the winter. So we want to think like they think.”

PRINGLE

First things first, Davidson recommends creating a site analysis that takes into account what type of pets you have, whether they lounge a lot or run around, if they have high energy, like to jump or dig or bark. Use these elements to draw a plan on paper that defines areas where your pet is allowed and spaces that are off limits.

Next, think about materials you can use to physically create those spaces, giving careful thought to how your pet might interact with those materials, Davidson said. Mulch, for instance, is great for plants, but dogs can easily kick bark, shredded wood, and pea gravel out of plant beds, and cacao husk can be toxic to dogs. Rock mulch usually stays put better, said Davidson, although granite has jagged edges and can injure dogs’ feet.

Patio pavers can be great for defining spaces, but they can soak up heat and be slippery when wet. Steel edging can be sharp, especially where segments meet. Davidson recommended considering alternatives like brick pavers, concrete blocks, and plastic edging.

Incorporating plants into a landscape design is critical for making the finished design aesthetically pleasing and functional for both humans and pets. However, many plants are toxic to pets, including boxwood, chrysanthemum, chokecherry, daffodils, and sweet pea.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean that your pet is going to have huge issues and you can never ever plant it, but it’s good to have awareness,” said Davidson. She also pointed to houseplants like monstera and split leaf philodendron that cats might like to sample but can make them sick.

Submitted by Lindsey Cooper KOTA KUB Submitted by Jazz Robertson Submitted by Lauren Stevens
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | October 202228

Backyard composting is popular for gardeners, but it can inadvertently give curious dogs access to materials that might be dangerous to them, including coffee, grapes, mushrooms, and mold.

Landscaping elements can be useful to mitigate existing damage caused by negative pet behavior, including digging and chewing, as well as urine spots. Using texture (think pokey, thorny or smelly material) discourage animals from entering certain areas. Plants that are known to be effective deterrents are lavender, juniper, yucca, barberry, and mahonia. Ornamental grasses are also good deterrents.

“If it’s not fun for you to garden around, it’s probably not going to be fun for an animal to move around in,” said Davidson.

Burying chicken wire or planting climbing vines on lattice along a fence line can deter dogs determined to dig their way out. And for the age-old problem of urine spots in grass, which is caused by high concentrations of nitrogen and salts, Davidson said your best bet is to create a designated potty spot or increase irrigation in problem areas.

Suveto Partners with Arrowhead Animal Hospital; Together Providing Optimal Pet Care

When you take a beloved family pet to a veterinary clinic, you want to know that your critter not only gets the best treatment, but that the staff and caregivers are well-taken care of too – so the staff is positioned to render the very best care.

In researching for this article, I learned a great deal of important information regarding new approaches to veterinary care.

“Suveto is redefining veterinary ownership,” explained Suveto CEO & Co-Founder, Marc Nathan. “Suveto recognizes that student debt and the corporatization of the industry are driving ownership into extinction. This is why every veterinarian in our network is a shareholder in their hospital.”

Suveto believes veterinary ownership is the future. And so do the 40 staff members at Westminster’s Arrowhead Animal Hospital.

“We like to think we’re ‘paying it forward,’” said Arrowhead Practice Manager Theresa Elliott, who worked for Suveto for six years prior to joining Arrowhead Animal Hospital a couple years ago.

“In general, our whole industry experienced a surge in needs as a result of COVID,” explained Ms. Elliott. “Urgent care, after-hours care, and more were needed because remote workers were adopting dogs and cats and Suveto helped support those needs.”

Since its inception some 35 years ago, the staff at the Arrowhead Animal Hospital has focused on providing the best veterinary care for our house pets.

Savanah Yarzebinski, a customer service representative at Arrowhead Animal Hospital, explained how their clinic treated the Pitbull, Chata, the seven-year-old lone survivor of the May 22, 2022 Broomfield Anthem plane crash that took the life of two people. Veterinarians at Arrowhead Animal Hospital received word that the dog was found wandering near the wreckage.

PET TREATS Homemade

My daughter loves her dog. She also loves to cook. I will never forget the first time she was old enough to bake a dog-friendly cake for our dog Cooper’s birthday. She spent hours. It was a two-layer delicious mess with peanut butter as frosting. We invited all the neighbor dogs over to run around and ended the playdate/birthday party with slices of the dog cake.

Here is her recipe for homemade dog cake and also dog biscuits that are easy. Always check with your vet to make sure ingredients are safe for your pet.

Tenny’s Dog Cake

(Makes single-layer cake. Double recipe for two layer)

INGREDIENTS:

CAKE

• 1 cup flour

• ½ tsp baking soda

• 1/8 cup vegetable oil

• ¼ cup natural peanut butter

• ½ cup applesauce

• ½ cup pumpkin puree

• ¼ cup shredded carrots

• 1 egg

FROSTING

• ½ cup natural peanut butter

• ½ cup plain Greek yogurt

INSTRUCTIONS:

CAKE

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. In a large bowl, combine flour and baking soda.

3. In a separate bowl mix together vegetable oil, peanut butter, applesauce, shredded carrots, and pumpkin puree. Once combined, mix in egg and stir until combined.

4. Combine wet and dry ingredients and stir until combined.

5. Pour mixture into an 8” round pan (or square pan) that has been sprayed with oil.

6. Bake for approximately 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the cake springs back when pressed lightly.

7. Allow to cool on a wire rack prior to removing from pan.

FROSTING

1. Mix Greek yogurt and peanut butter until well combined. Spread over cake. If not serving immediately, store in refrigerator.

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | October 202232

• 2 medium ripe

• 1/2 cup natural peanut

1. Preheat your oven to 300F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Add the oats to a food processor and grind until they reach a fine powder. Add the bananas and peanut butter and blend until a sticky dough is formed.

3. Remove from the food processor and roll out on a lightly floured surface. (Use whole wheat flour, more ground oats, or another dog-safe flour that you have on hand). I used a heart cookie cutter to cut out the treats but you could use any cookie cutter, or just cut them into squares with a knife or pizza cutter.

4. Lay the treats on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the treats are puffed up a bit, dry and dark brown on the bottoms, (they will still feel soft when first removed from the oven). The treats will get a bit more firm once they are cool but will still be a slightly softer dog treat. Let cool before giving one to your pup. Store in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Broomfield’s Willow Run Provides Complete Pet Supplies and Nourishment for All of Our Pets!

What better issue to talk about Broomfield’s beloved Willow Run Feed store than our beloved Pet Issue! Located just off 120th across from Home Depot you can find their barn stacked high with grain and feed, employees playing with their weekend guests or helping customers find a unique toy for their cuddly companion.

For over 30 years, the folks at Willow Run Feed and Supply have been dedicated to making sure we have a place to find high quality food for our beloved beasts. From the smallest of ant colonies to the largest of our equestrian friends. You can shop with confidence knowing that they have done the research in finding superior food and treats. One location to find all your holistic, natural, freezedried, dehydrated, deli-fresh or vegetarian needs.

Their commitment to quality doesn’t end with their more than 30 choices in high quality dog foods, they also only carry the best in collars, leashes, toys, and beds. They also carry a large selection of healthcare and grooming supplies.

Located inside Willow Run is Wild Bird Mercantile where all bird enthusiasts can find unique bird houses and feeders along with large bags of wild bird seed. We all know when you’re feeding your lovely neighborhood birds there is a chance you are also feeding those crafty little squirrels too, why not grab a feeder and food just for them so nobody has to share. Wild Bird Mercantile also sells suet feeders and a few select garden items.

Willow Run Feed and Supply has a barn stacked high with only the best foods for our closest companions. Some of the most trusted names in dog and cat food like Taste of the Wild, Wellness Brand, and Nature’s Logic, just to name a few. These brands are some of the most popular brands by veterinarians and breeders alike. Not to mention the empty bowls you’ll have once your pet tries their new food. You can also find Oxbow food for those smaller mammals. We all enjoy a vacation but worrying about our beloved dog or cat during that time adds stress where there doesn’t need to be. Willow Run offers lodging for our dear friends while we are away. They have 15 large indoor dog runs and have large outside spaces for playtime. Their Cattery has 8 large spaces and litter boxes are cleaned out twice daily. All furry guests are fed super premium food, and each canine visitor gets digestive enzymes and organic coconut oil every meal. Knowing our pets are being cared for takes that stress away.

Stop by and see the folks at Willow Run Supply and Feed in Broomfield on 120th Ave., just West of Kohl’s, for all your pets needs.
