Our homes are mirrors of our lives. The space we inhabit, the way we maintain or decorate it, and the things inside, are a reflection of our personality and our experience. Our homes are a collection point for the memories and artifacts of our lives.
Nearly 30 years ago, my husband and I started the homeowner's journey. We purchased a newer home, that was basically a clean slate for decorating and improvements, and settled in. I loved our home and began the process of making it “ours.” We added some color to the walls, slowly acquired furniture, and made a few improvements, such as adding a deck and beginning to finish the basement.
Then the children came. We incorporated them into the home, set up their bedrooms, and for many of those busy years, our home often felt like a big container for our lives and all of the things that come with kids at the various phases and stages. The family room quickly filled with toys and books, and the front hall and garage with shoes, coats, and sports equipment. Laundry seemed to creep throughout the house on a constant basis, and the master bedroom sunken tub became a laundry basket (please tell me I am not the only one). During those years, our home was also filled with countless gatherings, treasured stories, and family moments. Indeed it is because of family that a house becomes a home.
During those growing years, our home also endured some aging and natural wear and tear. For us, updates stopped during those years, and while we completed necessary repairs and improvements and occasionally some fresh paint in different colors, we were using, but not improving our house.
Now we, and our home, are in a new phase. Our children are grown and building their own lives and spaces and it is just the two of us and the dog. We have time and budget and our house is finally getting some attention. A partial kitchen update, some bathroom improvements, and new gutters were on the list … some of it is necessity and some vanity. It all feels good.
As we have made a few changes, I have paused and contemplated changing things about the house, things that reflect those precious growing years. But it is ok. The changes are what we need for the next “part.”
The statement mirror over the fireplace that my dad and husband crafted will always stay. A wall painting created by my brother for what was once the nursery will be a permanent fixture in my now office. And although the kitchen looks different and the deck is soon to become a patio, the gatherings to come will be just as precious as those of the past. And as long as we stay, our home will continue to be a reflection of our life.
If home improvements are on your mind this spring, please dive into our local guide starting on page 32.

It’s home improvement month, and boy can those two words take on so many meanings! Most would say it means to update a bathroom or re-landscape the yard, perhaps even repainting your entire home. Sure, those are great improvements. I also think that home improvement can mean finding ways to create a happier, healthier lifestyle at home so that everyone can thrive emotionally.
What I am talking about is creating the right home environment so that you can encourage productivity and improve mental health. A home with a lot of natural light elevates your mood and helps with better sleep at night. Decorating with natural elements such as plants enhances cognitive abilities and comfortable furniture helps you relax at the end of the day.
Even small changes can improve the quality of your life, and doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or take a lot of your time. When you look around and see the huge changes you want to make, it can be overwhelming and cause paralysis and nothing changes. Starting small encourages movement, so let’s start there.
Everyone talks about decluttering. This really is a perfect place to start. But start small! A drawer one day, another drawer the next day. Work up to closets and bedside stands and all those little places where clutter resides. I am someone who doesn’t want to get rid of things “just in case I want it someday.” The way I got past this was to put everything I didn’t need or use anymore in bags or bins and store them away for six months. If I wasn’t missing anything and couldn’t tell you what was in those bags and bins, I donated it all. It felt invigorating! I
love the empty spaces I now have. It’s true that you spend the first half of your life buying things and the second half trying to get rid of it all.
Another thing you can do is hire a professional decorator for an hour or two to come over and give you ideas of how to aesthetically improve your home with what you already have. They are SO good at this. Just moving pictures or furniture can make it look like a new home. Taking down heavy drapes and adding a few plants uplifts the whole energy of the room. Having a second opinion is encouraging and motivating and is inexpensive. And my number one? Create a happy space for yourself! This can be in a spare room, a corner of a room, a walk-in closet, or even a space in the garage or outside. It can even be the top of a dresser where you place pictures and sentimental cards or letters you have received. Find any little area that can be all yours. Make it a place where you have happy things and happy memories. A place where you can pause and take some deep breaths and ground yourself. A place that reminds you that you matter and that you are loved.
It’s true that you spend the first half of your life buying things and the second half trying to get rid of it all.
May this be the month that you take a step towards your emotional home improvement so that you can live with more peace and joy.

Jesse SilverDanse Etoile Ballet is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
Founder and Director Marie-Jose Payannet said her decision to create Danse Etoile – with a budget of $100, more than two decades ago – was made on the “spur of a crazy moment.” She was frustrated with the politics and scheduling of large organizations and a focus on fundraising that got in the way of interacting with dancers.
“Being a much smaller organization gave me the freedom I craved,” said Payannet. “It was also easier to give young dancers better opportunities to dance and create along the way.”
The first few years were challenging, she said, but donors and grants allowed the fledgling company to produce good-quality shows that were affordable for low-income families.
“Our first class was offered on an indoor soccer field,” said Payannet. “My husband and I built two studios. The first one was located in Broomfield in an old warehouse and we often had to rehearse without heat or air conditioning. We had many floods, but nothing prevented us from rehearsing and performing. My dancers and I took it one day at a time.”
Throughout the years, Payannet was conscious of not aspiring to grow Danse Etoile into the type of large organization she left behind. She said she is proud the company has produced three unique shows every season for the past 20 years, with the exception of one year due to COVID-19. “The best memories come from meeting all the people, younger and older,” said Payannet. “Seeing a young dancer develop into a fine artist and great human being is the reward.”
Danse Etoile performed The Little Mermaid in January based
on the classic Hans Christina Anderson tale. The show was a great way to introduce families to ballet with a story they may be familiar with. Danse Etoile’s performance included original music pieces by Colorado composer Bruce Klepper and original choreography by Payannet.
The company is preparing for its June performance of Frida’s Wings, which explores the art and life of famed artist Frida Kahlo, a contrast of traditional Mexican culture and her modern paintings. Translating the rich symbolism of her pieces into dance, Danse Etoile will take a closer look at the many faces of Frida Kahlo, weaving her colorful and complicated life into a creative ballet that pays tribute to one of the most unique and intriguing artists of the 20th century.
“This will be a very creative and interesting show so we hope many in the community will join us,” said Beth Maciolek. “Marie has had many shows in the past focusing on artists such as Matisse two years ago and the Bronte sisters last year, and they are always an amazing and unique view into the world of their works.”
The new season beginning in the fall typically includes the annual “Celebrate Dance and Music” performance in October, the ballet at Broomfield Auditorium in January and the season finale at the Dairy Arts Center.
Danse Etoile has a six-week summer intensive program each year beginning in mid-June. This program is designed to allow the dancers to perfect their techniques, choreograph pieces for Celebrate Dance and Music, and learn classic ballet variations such as Giselle and Paquita. The company also performs at community outreach events, such as the Winter Festival at the Superior Community Center.

n a world of big and bigger Big Box stores, and everything Amazononian, Broomfield is home to an increasingly popular, refreshing and inspiring, home furnishings and decor shopping retreat. Just west of Safeway and east of the Broadlands Golf Course on 144th Ave, you will find Furn Consignment: an upscale furniture resale destination and the source of your next home decor conversation piece.
Brett and Lindsay Sherman are the owners of Broomfield’s furnishings treasure box, opening the store just over 18 months ago, in pursuit of a life change and the opportunity to create a forum for community.
After a full career as a Civil Engineer, most recently working for the City of Brighton, in April 2021, after being diagnosed with colon cancer, Brett began an awakening. He worked through the conclusion of his treatment in January 2022, often going straight from chemotherapy to the office. But when he entered remission, and as the pandemic lingered, Brett and Lindsay began to consider some changes.
“A close friend of ours in Durango had a furniture consignment store called Re-love. She was our inspiration. We had moved to Broomfield in 2018 and decided to bring the concept here in our own store,” said Brett. He resigned from his Director position in Brighton in April 2022 and opened Furn Consignment that summer. “The store was a fun concept and a great way to meet new people.”
“I was still working in education when the store opened, and helping out on the weekends,” explained Lindsay.
“But our most fun days were when we were together at the store – rearranging and redecorating,” said Brett. Lindsay soon left her position to commit to the business full time.
Together the couple had a similar vision for the store; create a space that fostered community and was focused on giving back and charitable giving. Also, that by its nature, the business is “green” as it fosters repurposing and reuse. Furn is a welcoming, beautifully appointed store, with all merchandise fully staged. Upbeat, fun music plays over the sound system, and minutes after entering and talking with Brett or Lindsay you feel like you have just visited an old friend.
Merchandise is sourced through consignors who send an email inquiry with photos and details of the items to be considered, and then Furn decides what to accept. Some consignors are downsizing or moving. Some find their way to Furn through real estate or estate firms, and furniture is also acquired through
some online companies.
“We have lots of repeat customersbuyers and sellers,” said Linsday. “We are often working with people in transition and it is an honor to assist people in making their lives easier by helping them divest their belongings and finding a new place for heirloom items.”
Only the highest quality pieces are accepted and all merchandise must be in excellent condition. The store houses an eclectic mix of furnishings and decor from many styles and eras, and resells with a fully transparent model. Each item is priced at 60% of current retail value and the consignor gets 50% of the final sale price. Each item drops in price at 15-, 30-, and 50-days, and at 60-days the item is returned to the owner or donated. They have worked with more than 550 consignors to date.
Business is growing, and the Shermans are realizing their aspiration of deeper connection with the community through various philanthropic activities, all as they learned early this year that Brett’s cancer had returned. Brett is now going through treatment for pancreatic cancer. With the support of family and the community they have built at Furn, Brett is battling. The Shermans are thankful and optimistic.
“We delight in helping people sell beautiful things and helping customers find something they did not expect,” explained Brett. Gratitude and positivity exude from the Shermans and through the very walls of the store. Make some time to visit and explore for yourself. I promise, you will return again and again. To learn more, stop by the store or see furnllc.com.
As People of Action our mission is to change lives in our community and the world by providing impactful services and support."
Broomfield Rotary was admitted into Rotary International on March 22, 1958, with 26 members. The number of local members has grown over the years, but the goal remains the same; friends coming together to change the lives of Broomfield residents and others around the world. The Chapter believes by working together with members and partners, they can create a ripple effect of positive change that extends far beyond our community.
Broomfield Rotary has made it a priority to increase volunteer services to the community and improve all fundraising efforts that help support our local nonprofits. They work with many local beloved nonprofits including FISH, Bal Swan, Senior Resources of Broomfield, and FRIENDS. The causes are near and dear to the members’ hearts and as a team they make sure that they work endlessly to ensure community needs are met.
The Broomfield Rotary has teamed up with neighboring Westminster Rotary to get as many free books as possible into the hands of preschoolers through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. They also are working with the Broomfield Library to help get families with preschool aged children enrolled into the wonderful program that sends preschoolers a free book every month (see our article in the February issue). To enroll your child today, see the link on the Broomfield Rotary’s website.
There are many veterans who serve as members of Broomfield Rotary, and since 2015 they have been involved with Wreaths Across America. The club lays wreaths on the graves of veterans at Broomfield County Commons Cemetery joining thousands of volunteers across America in this solemn tribute. The Veterans Museum is another non-profit the Rotary regularly supports.
Broomfield’s FISH has seen the highest numbers of families reaching out for help this past year and they are so grateful to have an essential Rotary partnership. “The Rotary Club of Broomfield has championed our mission in many ways over the years, generously giving time, energy, and funds to help us feed families and fuel hope, and we could not be more grateful for their ongoing support,” said Maggie Sava, Communications and Media Manager of Broomfield FISH.
The Rotary Club also is proud to host the 21st annual Tom
Deland Memorial Golf Tournament which benefits the Broomfield Rotary Foundation’s Police and Fire Fund. As a longtime Broomfield Rotary member, Former Broomfield Police Chief Tom Deland was instrumental in starting the Police and Fire Fund which provides financial assistance to police officers and firefighters who are injured or lost in the line of duty. Save the date and support first responders through this tournament on July 22, 2024, at the beautiful Omni Golf Resort.
It is easy to see how the members of Broomfield Rotary Club are making a difference in our community. The Broomfield Rotary teamed up with Westminster Rotary to get as many free books as possible into the hands of preschoolers through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. With a dream to create a home for dancers who wanted to tell stories and change the world through art, Kelly Archer booked the Broomfield Auditorium eight years ago for a concert before she even knew a dancer in Colorado.
Archer began dancing professionally while still in high school and fell in love with concert dance while studying theater and dance at the University of Northern Colorado. When she moved to Broomfield with her family in 2014, she reached out to her former high school drama teacher and mentor, Judi Daniels, and asked her to provide guidance in starting a dance company. Archer expected to be turned down by Daniels, who was battling cancer, but Daniels jumped at the opportunity.
Together they founded Chadash Contemporary Dance Movement in 2016. Since then, the company, directed by Archer and Associate Director Stephanie McGill, has grown into a large family of professional dancers across the country that presents a full season of full-length evening works. Daniels was instrumental in Chadash until her death in 2021.
Chadash comes from a primitive root word that means to rebuild, renew, repair, and restore. Although there is no agreed-upon definition of contemporary dance, it can be described as movement that fits the current moment.
“While our Chadash dancers have all trained rigorously with a strong technical foundation, they are comfortable and well-versed in a variety of styles, as is Chadash's choreography,” said Archer. “We tell original stories that deal with and describe what it means to be human. Because dance is the vehicle by which we tell these stories, we employ a variety of styles of contemporary dance: ballet,
modern, jazz, hip-hop, and we even have our first tap piece in one of our upcoming concerts!”
Archer said she believes the arts are vital to the commu nity, especially in the world today.
“Our souls were made for beauty, but sometimes, because of the hurried and frenetic pace of our lives, we miss the beauty just at our fingertips, all around us,” said Archer.
“That is why we believe it is important to make time for it. Our concerts create space for us to have ‘campfire
moments,’ where we come and sit together, not only to experience beauty and hope, but also to ponder and wrestle through some of the deep and important parts of the human experience.”
This is the first year Chadash is offering a full season with three concerts. In December, it presented its first holiday show, a dance concert set to Handel's Messiah.
“Our Handel's Messiah concert was one of my favorite productions we've ever created,” said Archer. “I've long wanted to create movement to accompany Handel's timeless masterpiece. The music is incredible and once we started rehearsals, it felt like it was meant to have movement to accompany it! We are so excited to have this become a holiday tradition for us as a company, and are hoping it does for the community as well.”
In May, Chadash will present a collaborative concert with its sister pre-professional company, Colorado Dance Initiative. The concert, "Extraordinarily Ordinary,” is an original story of how a mother and daughter become immersed in a tale of a fantastical prince when they begin finding bottled notes that wash ashore in their small coastal town.
The company’s August concert, which includes Chadash dancers from across the country, will center around the idea of the Enneagram – how everyone is unique and therefore sees the world differently.
“Our productions tell stories primarily through dance, but also a wide variety of artistic media,” said Archer. “We employ original spoken word, theater, poetry, music, film, photography and visual art that provides an experience that is so much more than just a dance concert. Mostly, we would just like our friends in Broomfield and the surrounding areas to come and experience this work that we create for them to enjoy!”
Chadash is working toward becoming a full-time company with a training program and is in the process of seeking funding.

After five years of serving Broomfield’s pets and their families, Wag N’ Wash Natural Pet Food & Grooming is grateful for its loyal customers. It has made a variety of upgrades and launched new projects to keep pets healthy and happy.
“Serving Broomfield's pets and pet parents has been everything I hoped it would be when we chose to open our store here,” said owner Michael Schreiber. “The community is beyond loyal to their animals. I'm extremely grateful that they chose Wag N’ Wash as their pet store.”
Wag N’ Wash is a one-stop shop providing everything for cats and dogs, from natural pet food and supplements to treats, accessories, full-service grooming, and do-ityourself pet wash and drying stations. Although it is a small neighborhood pet store, Wag N’ Wash offers the same goods and services that larger operations offer, including delivery, curbside pickup, and online shopping.
This year, Wag N’ Wash plans to expand its groom room to meet its customers’ grooming needs, and it has improved its self-wash program to give customers their 9th wash for free. In addition, Wag N Wash brought in 40 percent more inventory last year and is making additional improvements to better the shopping experience, including improving its rewards program to allow customers to accumulate points for every dollar they spend.
Wag N’ Wash built its business around the self-pet wash – not dog wash, because neighbors have washed cats, pigs, and even a goat in its state-of-the-art tubs,
Wag N’ Wash hosts K-9 Smiles quarterly at its location, providing stress-free, non-anesthesia teeth cleaning services tailored exclusively for pets. It also recently began offering affordable veterinary services via VIP Petcare clinics each month.
Schreiber fell in love with Colorado in 1988 after a skiing vacation in Steamboat Springs, and he vowed someday he would make Colorado his home. Following a three-decade career working at the Chicago Board of Trade and in the telecommunications industry, Schreiber decided six years ago to make good on his promise to himself.
Schreiber said he has loved animals for as long as he can remember, but he did not have a dog of his own growing up. When he adopted his first dog in 1993, he spent time learning about the importance of a proper diet for his new family
member. Combining his love for animals and his desire to improve the health and happiness of people and their pets, Schreiber opened Wag N’ Wash Natural Pet Food and Grooming at 1100 U.S. Highway 287 in Broomfield.
Unlike other stores where the wash is often an afterthought in the back of the store, Wag N’ Wash built its business around the self-pet wash – not dog wash, because neighbors have washed cats, pigs, and even a goat in its state-ofthe-art tubs, said Schreiber. The store provides separate drying stations and supplies everything a pet parent needs to get their pet clean.
For pet parents who prefer a full-service groom, Wag N’ Wash holds its professionals to a high standard, putting the health and wellness of every animal in its care first and always striving to provide show-quality grooms.
Its retail offerings consist of all-natural pet food, treats, and supplements to keep pets healthy and happy, along with quality toys, collars, leashes, harnesses, and just about anything a pet parent might need for their dog or cat.
Schreiber and his team enjoy engaging with the community, including offering photo sessions with Santa and the Easter Bunny as well as a kissing booth for Valentine's Day.
Schreiber and his wife, Lisa, live in Broomfield with their rescued Saint Bernard/Boxer mix Finnegan, who they joke is the store’s official treat shoplifter.

The Broomfield Community Foundation has been looking after Broomfield and helping the community for more than 30 years. The organization believes that together we can enhance and enrich our community through the power of generosity and philanthropy, changing lives and creating hope and possibilities for all. One way is by teaching the next generation the importance of service to the community and so the Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council gives students an opportunity to get involved and make Broomfield a better place.
The Broomfield Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory
Council supports charitable organizations and local non-profits through fundraising, grant-making, and volunteerism. YAC is made up of problem-solving high school students from the Broomfield area, who value community service and want to learn practical ways to serve their communities beyond high school. The council meets twice a month to assess the needs of the community, organize fundraisers, write grants and volunteer to reach their goals of helping where they see the need.
River Paranto, 17, said, “I joined the YAC because I wanted more opportunities to help support my community, and have impact on problems that were important to me.” Through YAC, students learn valuable professional skills like networking, giving presentations, and leading teams. “I knew that joining YAC would allow me to expand my skills in a completely new way and in a different environment than I was used to which was incredibly appealing.”
Council member Avery A.,18, recalled one of their favorite projects was when YAC teamed up with Broomfield’s non-profit The Refuge for Laundry of Love night. YAC provided coins and dinner for some of The Refuge’s clients so that they could get much needed laundry done while visiting with members of the council. “It was a super cool experience because we got to meet the clients and learn about their experiences living in Broomfield, so it was a very meaningful and personal service opportunity, one I don’t think I’ll ever forget.”
The Youth Advisory Council participates in service activities to acquaint themselves with the wide range of needs and services provided throughout the Broomfield area. Then with

the guidance of Broomfield Community Foundation’s board, the council develops a grant making strategy, chooses their recipients whose mission inspires and whose efforts impact the Broomfield community, and award grants to those amazing organizations.
Avery added, “It is such an amazing chance to learn valuable skills like networking, fundraising, and how to build meaningful connections while volunteering and making a positive impact
in Broomfield.”
If you are a motivated, compassionate student, who thinks critically, can identify solutions quickly, and has a deep love for this community, joining BCF’s Youth Advisory Council could be the place for you to start an amazing journey. River Paranto advised “Anyone who has a particular interest in non-profits would enjoy the work that the YAC does.” The council is student-led which allows the students
to take their projects in the direction they are most interested in. River added, “Getting to see your hard work turn into something that supports a non-profit of your choosing is incredibly impactful and heartwarming.” There is no GPA requirement, and all students are encouraged to apply.

roomfield is home to many incredibly talented kids with big imaginations and the drive to test the the limits to what they can do. And the Broomfield community is lucky to have many organizations and businesses that cater to that imagination and give it an opportunity to soar. Whether through rocking an instrument, strutting talents on stage, or dancing like no one is watching, there are many Broomfield places for youth to shine.
To some, music is healing and to others it is a way of life. School of Rock has a revolutionary music education system that is proven to be not only fun but highly effective. With the perfect combination of one-on-one instruction, mixed with group rehearsals and live performances, students stay engaged and are excited to start a musical journey. From songwriting classes, to vocal training and exploring an array of instruments, School of Rock helps kids find the beat. With performance central to the curriculum, School of Rock has 1,000s of performances every year and this spring the community can see their talented students perform live in concerts at different venues all over Broomfield. Summer will be here before we know it and School of Rock has an amazing summer camp line-up on top of its menu of lessons. They offer Rock 101 where students can explore different instruments through activities and games, a chance to find that teen spirit with a week of Nirvana, or go back in time to the smooth sounds of the 70s in Classic Rock Rewind camp. See https:// www.schoolofrock.com/locations/broomfield for details on performances, classes and for camps this summer.
The team at BackStory Theatre knows that every community is enriched by theater! Founded in 2006, BackStory Theatre strives to provide theater performance and education opportunities to the Broomfield community. The organization offers skill and performance-based classes for ages 18 months to 18 years, with auditioned youth stage performances in multiple full stage productions every year. BackStory Theatre works hard to ensure inclusivity and accessibility so any child who wants to experience theater can do so, from adapting stages for medical equipment to providing financial assistance.
BackStory Theatre offers an array of classes all year round, like ensemble singing, improv classes, and fun classes for preschoolers. This spring they are even offering pop-up workshops for those days when schools have a day off. Auditions for the summer play Doctor in Wonderland will be in May. Summer brings a full schedule of morning, afternoon, or all-day classes focused on collaboratively adapting stories for stage production, creating characters, crafting scenes, and rehearsing for end of the season performances. Musical summer camp will be hosted in July. Visit https://www. backstorytheatre.org/ for more information on all upcoming events and sign-up details.

Editor’s Note: Our Broomfield Magazine is debuting a new feature this issue that will profile different members of the community. The goal of Our People: Meet “insert name” is to introduce Broomfield change-makers and highlight their contributions.
Following is a recent conversation with longtime Broomfield resident Bev Swenson.
Widowed for more than three decades, Bev said she and her husband, Chuck, raised six kids in Broomfield, four girls and twin boys. She has lived here since 1966 and has attended the Broomfield United Methodist Church since that time, where she also has taught Bible Study. At 93-years old, Bev said (with tongue firmly in cheek), “You know, 93 isn’t old if you are a tree.”
Q: Share with us a little about your career and hobbies and what it is you like to do in your free time.
A: I have worked with Weight Watchers for 25 years and at the University of Colorado at its Center for Advancing Professional Excellence (CAPE) program. I used to be an avid hiker, and now walk a mile and a half several times a week when given the chance. I also enjoy golf and playing bridge.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant and park?
A: I don’t go out to eat often. But I do meet friends at the Deli Zone for breakfast when the weather’s nice. There’s a group of six or eight of us that get together to tackle world problems. And I enjoy Midway Park and the Girl Scout Shelter.
Q: Who is the most interesting person, past or present, you’ve met in our community?
A: Ellie McKinley is a favorite person. Ellie has always been in my life because she’s a neighbor and we’ve been friends for more than 50 years. Bev admires Ellie’s get-up-and-go attitude and not taking ‘NO’ for an answer.
Q: Do you have a favorite television show?
A: I watch the nightly news followed by Jeopardy. I think host Ken Jennings does a great job.
Q: What advice would you give to people living in or relocating to Broomfield?
Because of her extensive community service, Bev Swenson was the 2018 recipient of the Heart of Broomfield Award. Courtesy photo.
A: I encourage others to get involved in the community. I am actively involved in my church and the PEO Sisterhood (Philanthropic Educational Organization). Through the years I have been lucky to help organize and support numerous local non-profits including Broomfield FISH, the Rotary, the Broomfield Community Foundation, and A Precious Child.
Q: What current or former local business makes you nostalgic about our community?
A: Located in the original downtown area (where the At Home store now sits) of Broomfield there was a dime store. It was Broomfield’s dime store and part of the only shopping area. When we moved here there was only one stoplight.
Q: What is something you find unique about Broomfield?
A: I enjoy the community feeling and knowing I am surrounded by good people. I’ve been blessed. I feel so fortunate with my health and wonderful family, great friends, and being supported by this community.
Q: What is something interesting about you that most people don’t know?
A: My friend and I took a three-week guided trek in Nepal and India in 1999. It was more difficult than I was expecting, but so enjoyable. We stayed in tea houses during the night.
Q: What is a word that most reminds you of Broomfield?
A: Friendly.
Q: Who inspires you to be a better person?
A: My family while I was growing up and now my children. I hope to leave the world a better place.

Here are a few recipes that highlight the simplicity of the produce in season.
(Adapted from Simply Recipes)
Ingredients:
• 1 large fennel bulb (or 2 medium bulbs)
• 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
• 2 tablespoons lemon juice
• 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
• 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon fresh mint, chopped
• 2 teaspoons shallot or onion, minced
Directions:
Make the vinaigrette: Put the lemon juice, shallot, mustard, salt, sugar, and mint in a blender and pulse briefly to combine. With the motor running, drizzle in the olive oil until it is well combined.
Shave the fennel into thin slices:
Using a mandoline, shave the fennel into 1/8 inch slices starting from the bottom of the bulb. Don't worry about coring the fennel bulb; it's unnecessary. If you don’t have a mandoline, slice the bulb as thin as you can. Chop some of the fennel fronds as well to toss in with the salad.
Marinate fennel with vinaigrette:
Toss with the fennel and marinate for at least an hour. Serve this salad either cold or at room temperature.

Ingredients:
• 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
• 1/2 medium yellow onion, chopped
• 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
• 3 garlic cloves, smashed
• 1 pound carrots, roughly chopped
• 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
• 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
• 3 cups vegetable broth
• freshly ground black pepper
• 1 teaspoon maple syrup, optional
• coconut milk for garnish, optional
Directions:
Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions, salt, and pepper and cook until softened, stirring occasionally, about 8 minutes. Add the smashed garlic cloves (they’ll get blended later) and carrots to the pot and cook 8 minutes more, stirring occasionally.
Stir in the ginger, apple cider vinegar, and broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
Let cool slightly and transfer to a blender. Blend until smooth. If your soup is too thick, add a little water. If you would like your soup a little sweeter, add the maple syrup.
Serve with a drizzle of coconut milk, if desired.
Ingredients:
• 2 pounds rhubarb (6 cups chopped)
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 2 tablespoons cornstarch
• 1/4 teaspoon orange zest (optional; or 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest)
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 3/4 cup Old Fashioned rolled oats
• 3/4 cup all purpose flour (or almond flour for gluten-free)
• 1/2 cup brown sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 8 tablespoons cold salted butter (or coconut oil or vegan butter for vegan)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Make the filling: Chop the rhubarb into 1/2 inch pieces. Mix it with the granulated sugar, cornstarch, orange zest and vanilla extract in a bowl, then pour the filling into a round 9-inch pie pan, 9 x 9 inch baking dish or 7 x 11 baking dish.
Make the topping: In a medium bowl, mix together the oats, flour, sugar, cinnamon, and kosher salt. Cut the butter
into small pieces and then use your hands to mix it into the oats until fully distributed and a crumbly dough forms. It may take a while so be patient; you can also use a fork or pastry cutter if you prefer. (If using coconut oil, it can be room temperature; use the same method to add it.) Pour the crumble on top and smooth it into an even layer with your fingers.
Bake: Bake for 45 to 50 minutes until the top is evenly golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Cool for 30 minutes to 1 hour, then serve warm. You can leave out your crisp on the counter for up to 1 day (covered, at night) so the crisp topping can stay crisp. After 1 day, refrigerate any leftovers. This crumble also freezes well for several months in a sealed container; reheat it in a 350 degree oven until bubbly and the topping is crisp.

Avista’s legacy within the Boulder and Louisville community reaches back to 1862; it was known at that time as the Boulder Sanitarium. When AdventHealth Avista moved to Louisville in 1990, among the services that opened was the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Today AdventHealth Avista’s New Life Birth Center proudly cares for nearly 200 babies each month and the NICU serves as the only Level III NICU for the greater Boulder community.
Although our hope and prayer is for each delivery to result in happy, healthy babies, our NICU is more than prepared to care for babies who need emergency
care. After almost two months in the NICU, facing challenges with regulating breathing and heartbeat and severe gastrointestinal issues—Arthur and Archie’s health stabilized, and they grew strong enough to go home!
“The New Life Birth Center and the team in the NICU were HUGE in helping us stay calm and have hope,” said Colby. “We simply could not have asked for better care for our kids and support for ourselves.”
The Valentas' experience is certainly not uncommon for the NICU families that we care for. In fact, AdventHealth Avista’s NICU was recently recognized with the 2023 Human Experience Guardian of Excellence Award from Press Ganey. This award recognizes our NICU for scoring in the top 5% of healthcare facilities nationwide for providing the best patient experiences and care.
or specialized care. The Valentas have experienced the lifesaving care our NICU provides firsthand. Chelsea Valenta and her husband Colby, couldn’t wait to welcome their twins into the world. But when Chelsea started having contractions at 28 weeks, she knew something was wrong.
Chelsea and Colby rushed to the New Life Center at AdventHealth Avista, where Chelsea was admitted and given medication to stop the contractions. Three weeks later, Chelsea gave birth to two little boys: Arthur, who weighed five pounds, and Archie, who weighed three pounds, 10 ounces.
The boys were immediately placed in Avista’s NICU where they would receive round-the-clock, specialized
"This award is about the work the care team provides every day,” said NICU Manager, Kathleen Mooney. “They are passionate about babies and parents and consistently go above and beyond expectations to ensure the best patient outcomes along with the best possible experience for families. I am impressed on a daily basis and honored to be part of this team."
As our local communities have grown so has our NICU. “We increased our level of acuity and services to allow parents in the community to keep their babies close to home,” said Kathleen.
“We are now able to care for babies as young as 26 weeks gestation in our NICU. We have purchased new equipment, including specialized ventilators, which allow us to care for very premature and ill infants. We have added new disciplines to our care team to most holistically
serve patients and families. Occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, dieticians, and behavioral health specialists have joined nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists in the provision of optimal patient care. Additionally, we now offer advanced diagnostic tests that prevent babies from being transferred to larger hospitals downtown solely for testing. We are continually striving for improvement so that every baby and family will have the best possible outcomes.”
AdventHealth Avista has been blessed by financial gifts from generous donors, allowing us to grow the resources and technology we use to care for our patients and community. Brush Strokes for Hope is an organization that is dedicated to giving back to worthy causes. They have rallied 21 female artists from across the U.S. to participate in a weeklong, virtual fine art auction. Proceeds from the auction will go to AdventHealth Avista’s NICU to help cover costs for future advancements in care.
If you’re interested in buying an exquisite, one-of-a-kind painting for a great cause, visit: www.brushstrokesforhope.com from April 11-18 to check out the gallery. New art pieces will be unveiled daily!
We are humbled and incredibly proud to care for the tiniest patients and their families who live in our community.
