FROM THE
EDITOR Our Summer For children, young people, families, and educators, summer is not so much about the season, it is about the dozens and dozens of delicious days between Memorial Day – or the last day of school – and the first day of the new school year.
I remember being very young and spending the summer relishing in not having to get dressed and hurry out the door. To be able to linger over my bowl of cereal and watch an extra half hour of cartoons, followed by hours of playing with Barbie dolls with my sister. My family always had a membership to the Broomfield Swim and Tennis Club. Mornings were spent in swim lessons, with lunch from a picnic cooler packed by Mom, and afternoons playing in the pool with friends until our skin was wrinkled from the water and browned by the sun. When we were a little older, trips to the Club were on our bikes rather than a car ride from Mom, with my sister and I excitedly and happily coasting all the way down Main Street (downhill) each morning from our home in Eagle Trace and then often pushing those same bikes back uphill in the afternoon heat, heading home exhausted after a day of sun and swim and tennis. I remember eagerly eating dinner and then stopping for a brief rest on the couch, before catching a second wind as the neighborhood evening fun began. Hide and seek and games in the street, and sometimes putting on a singing or dancing “show” in a friend’s driveway. Lisa Payne also writes this month about some of her summer fun memories. If you are looking to create some memorable moments for your children or yourself this summer – you don’t need to look too hard! Broomfield offers plenty of options. We write about many of them in this issue including opportunities to explore nature and stretch your legs at the Broomfield Trail Adventure and Broomfield 100; days of fun, beauty, and science at the Butterfly Pavilion; challenges for the mind at the Broomfield Library Summer Reading Program; and concerts and festivals all summer long from the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities. Summer is in full bloom and your community is ready! Get out and enjoy the fun. Thanks for reading,

EVENTS JUNE 14 TO SEPTEMBER Broomfield Farmers’ Market at Holy Comforter
The Broomfield Farmers’ Market at Holy Comforter returns Tuesday, June 14. Located at 1700 West 10th Ave and Highway 287, the market will be open every Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. through September. The primary purpose of the Broomfield Farmers’ Market is to provide area residents with convenient access to high quality locally grown, farm-fresh produce sold directly by local farmers, and to provide local farmers with a direct outlet in the city for their farm produce. This is the 12th summer hosting the market at Holy Comforter, and volunteers are eager to continue working toward normal operations. In the past two years, adjustments were made to protect the health of shoppers, but this summer

the market should resemble the lively, community-filled event Broomfield residents know and love. Previously, in addition to vendors, the market hosted live music and children’s activities. Local non-profit organizations also attend the market to help connect community members with resources and services. The main attraction of the Farmers’ Market at Holy Comforter is all the delicious local produce, but that’s not all vendors have to offer! Shoppers will also find baked goods, meat and poultry, jams and pickles, spices, salsas, and more. For more information and updates throughout the summer, follow Broomfield Farmers’ Market at Holy Comforter on Facebook.

BUSY FAMILIES
Summer
SLOW DOWN By Lisa Payne
A song I love right now is called Slow Down Summer by Thomas Rhett. It takes me straight back to my childhood and how the summers felt so long. And the freedom, oh the freedom! My friends and I would ride bikes for hours, covering the same miles over and over but always discovering something new. Times were so different. We didn’t carry a cell phone. We had no responsibilities except to ride, be with friends, and be outside all day long. Most days we would leave after breakfast and not return home until dinner. The freedom. As I think back to those days, there was a very distinct feeling I had when riding my bike in the summer. Pedaling down the quiet street, I would close my eyes for a brief moment and hold my arms out as if I was a bird taking off in flight. The feel of the wind rushing past my skin as the sun wrapped its warmth around me … I remember wanting to feel this alive and carefree every single moment for the rest of my life. Every year about this time I think back to that memory and how it made me feel. I wonder what memories and feelings will come flooding back to my own kids when they are older and looking back at their summer months. We can all hope that summer is slow enough for them that they are able to feel bored and learn how important it is to be present with that feeling. (This seems like a good conversation to have over dinner tonight.) We live in an extremely fast paced society. People can get a hold of us 24/7. The Internet provides information overload. You can fill every square inch of your calendar in about ten minutes. But there is one thing I noticed after the pandemic. There is one thing people are doing really well right now. They are saying no more often. They realize that they can slow down and it will all be okay. They learned to love the feeling of a slow pace. A lot of people didn’t go back to work. Other people simplified their lives. People returned to the feeling of their childhoods, of having less and being present more. It is a beautiful thing. As summer begins for you, take the time to feel the summer feels. Walk barefoot in the cool green grass. Drink a cold glass of homemade lemonade

on the porch with someone you love. Run and jump into a pool holding hands with your kids. Lay on a blanket and watch the stars at night. Try a new hike. Sit around outside with family and friends late into the evening. This summer, you don’t have to be the fastest or busiest or cleanest. Let your calendar be mostly empty so that your heart can be extremely full. Think back to your favorite childhood summer memories and relive that best version of you. Wishing you slow summer living all year long! Lisa Payne writes about kids, food, family, and home. You can reach her at lisa@paynefam6.com.

Looking for a Great Fathers Day Gift?
WeatherTech in Broomfield has you “Covered”
By Missy Ruzicka
F
ather’s Day is just around the corner and WeatherTech is here to help you out! One of my husband’s favorite things he bought for his truck was his WeatherTech floor mats. Measured to fit his truck perfectly, it didn’t matter how muddy those soccer cleats were or how much of the field came inside the truck on a hunting trip, his WeatherTechs were up for the challenge. Sure, WeatherTech sells floor mats to protect your car, but they also sell much more. The company has products for home, office, and man’s best friend, as well as car products. WeatherTech has been around for decades with dedication to quality and service fueling product demand worldwide. Automotive enthusiasts have long known that WeatherTech makes automotive accessories of unparalleled quality, in fact WeatherTech supplies accessories to all four major German luxury car manufacturers. WeatherTech is devoted to making high quality products that are designed, engineered, and manufactured in America, and is dedicated to helping build the American dream by building with American materials, and assisting small businesses and local communities while delivering a high-quality product. Currently, there are only two WeatherTech stores in the country and we are lucky to have one right here in Broomfield. You can’t miss the new building on Wadsworth by HWY 36 that houses a showroom filled with knowledgeable staff and an installation center right on site. While you shop or wait for your car, you can take a load off at the in-store café with complimentary coffee and pastries. WeatherTech believes in providing customers with highly trained sales specialists offering world-class service, on top of its lifetime warranty on products. WeatherTech’s development center is located in Illinois and

that’s where creative minds come up with great designs. Using the most sophisticated tools the company is able to reverse engineer the car’s geometry to get the exact surface for the floors and cargo areas. It takes a team of engineers, R&D specialists, marketing professionals, product designers, and tool manufacturers to all come together to make the best product for busy lifestyles. WeatherTech is also committed to environmental sustainability through responsible manufacturing and the best engineering practices. The company controls its waste and recycles all unused raw materials including: aluminum, steel, rubber, paper, and cardboard. WeatherTech products are environmentally responsible, high quality, and American made and include: floor mats, cargo trunk liners, sunshades, cupholders, cup/phone holders, and seat protectors for the inside of your car. For the outside of your vehicle, they make protective accessories like window deflectors, truck bed liners, mud flaps, car covers, and bug deflectors. They also make products to use in your home like comfort mats, tablet holders, indoor and outdoor door mats, boot trays, and even a Christmas tree mat. “WeatherTech offers so much more than just a place to shop. What we’re offering is an immersive experience — from monthly parking lot car shows to an in-store café, to installation and detailing services, there are so many reasons to pay a visit and say hi! Whether you’re an auto aficionado or an everyday driver, there’s something for everyone to give your ride a refresh. And even if you’re not a big car person, we’ve still got you covered; there are products for your home and pet as well! You can even bring your dog in for a special treat while you shop. See you soon!” said Rory MacNeil, General Manager.

EXPLORE BROOMFIELD
Open Space and Trails THIS SUMMER By The City of Broomfield
Summer is right around the corner, and with 316 miles of trails, and 8,469 acres of public and private open space and parks, you will never get bored exploring the natural beauty Broomfield has to offer. Did you know there are many ways to get involved with Broomfield Open Space, Trails, and Recreation? The Open Space, Parks, Recreation, and Trails (OSPRT) Master Plan is being refreshed and you can give input to help inform how to refine existing strategies that protect and preserve Broomfield’s natural resources for the next 20 years! Originally put in place in 2005, this plan guides decisions about open lands, trails, and recreation programs and facilities. To learn more about the plan, take the short online survey, or get information about in person engagement events, visit BroomfieldVoice.com/OSPRTMasterPlan. Want to celebrate your love for trails with the rest of the Broomfield community? Broomfield Trail Adventure, Broomfield’s local National Trails Day celebration, will be held on June 4 at Anthem Community Park. Starting at 7:30 a.m., residents will be able to register for the event while enjoying refreshments. At 8:00 a.m., participants will choose to either walk or bike the event. Walkers will embark on a twomile walking loop to the new Anthem neighborhood trails to the south of the park that have spectacular Front Range views. Bikers will ride a seven-mile bike loop around Siena Reservoir which passes through the Anthem Ranch trails and open space to the west. The walk and bike will take approximately one hour, and there will be prizes handed out shortly after 9:00 a.m., with the event concluding around 9:45 a.m. Is one event not enough to celebrate your love for Broomfield Trails? The Broomfield 100 is a summer-long community event that promotes healthy living, outdoor exercise, and familiarizes the community with Broomfield’s many trails, open spaces, and parks. The challenge will launch at the Broomfield Trail Adventure and will conclude at

MY HAPPY RECIPE:
Lemon Bundt Cake By Lisa Payne
I am so excited to share my most requested recipe.
It is one that I make for birthdays and special occasions. Sometimes I make it just because I want to feel happy or make someone else feel happy. Someone had a baby? Lemon bundt cake to the rescue! Someone passed away? Lemon bundt cake to bring a smile. Your bestie is having a birthday? Lemon bundt cake will make them feel loved. Your kids got good grades? Lemon bundt cake to celebrate! It’s Friday? Time to eat lemon bundt cake. It is bright and citrusy and pure joy. I hope that you will make it for everyone in your life who needs a big lemon hug. This recipe was given to my sister and me from our mom. I remember her making it for my Dad’s birthday every year. And then I remember my sister making it for her family. One time she made it for a friend’s birthday and there were a lot of people at the party. I remember thinking that I wanted the last piece so that I could soak up all the liquid lemon goodness left on the plate. But
Monkton Guitars
by the time I got to the cake it was GONE. So my advice to you … next time you make this be sure to save yourself a piece before you do anything else. Or make two cakes and save an entire one for yourself. Just to be sure to hide it so that your husband or kids can’t find it and eat it before you do. For real.
Lemon Supreme Bundt Cake •
1 box lemon supreme deluxe cake mix
•
1 box lemon instant pudding mix (4 serving size)
•
½ cup canola oil
•
1 cup water
•
4 eggs
Blend all ingredients in a large bowl, then beat at medium speed for 2 minutes. Bake in a greased and floured 10 inch tube or bundt pan at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes until the cake springs back when touched lightly. Cool right side up for about 25 minutes then remove from pan. Frosting: Blend 1 cup powdered sugar and 2 Tbsp. lemon juice (can use some zest if you want) Once the cake has cooled, pour the frosting over the cake, or use my secret trick below before frosting.

Lisa’s secret trick: I added this little addition to the cake. Once the cake has cooled and before frosting, I do this. Mix in mason jar 1/3 cup warm water and 1/3 cup sugar and shake until dissolved. Add 2 Tbsp lemon juice and shake again. Poke holes all around the top of the cake with a toothpick or other skinny item like a kabob stick. Then pour the lemon simple syrup all over the cake and top with the frosting. You won’t be sorry you added this step. It keeps the cake moist for days and days. Except you will eat it all in one sitting so you won’t really test this theory. Sprinkle raspberries or blueberries around the plate for added beauty.
Enjoy!!

Plans for New Broomfield
Butterfly Pavilion Begin to Unfold Groundbreaking Planned for 2024 By Missy Ruzicka
June is pollinator month. Celebrate by getting excited about what’s coming to Broomfield when the new Butterfly Pavilion comes to town. The Butterfly Pavilion is the only stand-alone invertebrate zoo in the entire world and they are working tirelessly on the global conservation of our ever-important invertebrates.
24
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | June 2022
Over the past 25 years if you’ve ever been to the Butterfly Pavilion you know that every volunteer and staff member has a passion for teaching about invertebrates and how crucial they are to our existence. Invertebrates make up 97% of all animal species on earth and perform vital functions as pollinators, decomposers, predators, and prey. What better way to learn about these fascinating creatures than to get a hands-on experience! When the Butterfly Pavilion moves to Broomfield it will have so many new and different ways to explore the habitats of our invertebrate friends. Jennifer Quermann, Director of Marketing, and Janet McFarland Burlile, VP of Donor Relations, both took time out of their busy schedules to talk to me about all the incredible plans for the New Butterfly Pavilion. Back in 2016, there was discussion about how to expand and reach more people, and leaders quickly realized they were growing out of their 30,000 square foot Westminster home. In 2017 the City of Broomfield approached with a proposal of land, partnership, and a $13 million budget to move the Butterfly Pavilion to a new one-of-a-kind community at I-25 and HWY 7. Real estate developer McWhinney donated 3.5 acres of land for the Butterfly Pavilion’s new home and now is working to develop a 1,200-acre multi-use community combining science and environmental conservation, along with commercial development, that will be a pollinator friendly habitat, creating a new model of community development and landscapes. The New Butterfly Pavilion is planned to be a beautiful 81,000 square foot facility with three unique biomes for guests to explore the habitats that are crucial to our invertebrate friends. The Tropical biome will be similar to the current Wings of the Tropics, but the new one will be five stories high giving room for a natural canopy and a chance to see those who live high in that canopy with a treehouse viewing area. The new Ocean biome will be on the first floor with a much larger version of the current touch tanks, and in a separate tank they are even adding new species like jellyfish. The Desert biome will be the new home of the muchloved Rosie the Tarantula and her friends, surrounded by natural desert plants that make their habitats perfect. Unique features will be public research labs in each biome which will encourage guests to help in the research along with ‘discovery portals’ found in each biome; examples of the portals would be exploring a cave or checking out the underside of logs to see who lives in there.
Along with new biomes there will also be state of the art virtual reality conservation from Wild Life Protection Solutions so visitors can experience what it is like to be a dung beetle, swimming with Octopuses or pollinating with bees. Scientists from all over the world, along with university students and faculty, will be invited to the new expanded lab spaces to collaborate on invertebrate research. An example of what they are working on is breeding dragonflies and Colorado fireflies from egg to maturity to increase their populations. Along with new research space and classrooms, there will be special event spaces and a Café that will lead out to a park filled with trails and paths for recreation. Around the outside of the new Butterfly Pavilion there will be a Colorado Terrace with native plants and animals. And a dragonfly terrace will provide a place where scientists will make the perfect habitats for those increased dragonfly populations. The state-of-the-art facility in Broomfield will engage, inspire, and provide the tools humans need to come together to save invertebrates and therefore take one step towards saving the world.
Celebrate National Pollinators by using the QR code to donate to the New Broomfield Butterfly Pavilion with a planned ground breaking in 2024 and a grand opening in 2025! June 2022 | Our Broomfield™ Magazine

FRIENDS of Broomfield to Hold
GirlFRIENDS Luncheon and Fashion Show in July By Megan Mayes
FRIENDS of Broomfield is excited to celebrate National Girlfriends Day with a fashion show and luncheon on Sunday, July 31. This year, the event will be hosted by the GirlFRIENDS group at The Chateaux at Fox Meadows and will feature looks from fashion sponsors Dillards, MAC Cosmetics, and Vera Bradley. The GirlFRIENDS will be joined by male models from the programs, who will bring a new dimension to the show for the first time. Participants from Lil’FRIENDS will also take to the runway, making for an excellent show filled with diverse models.
Tickets can be purchased on the FRIENDS website. You can also support the event through sponsorships or a direct donation. The organization hopes to raise $20,000 to support all of the FRIENDS programs, including the day program, supported employment, and social, travel, and residential programs. Our Broomfield™ Magazine is proud to sponsor the GirlFRIENDS Luncheon and Fashion Show along with ARC Thrift Stores, Blue Federal Credit Union, Policy Matters, ABCO Contracting, Broomfield Lifestyle, the Sava family, DJ AJ, and Crysahna Suarez Photography. There are still many opportunities to join the cause, so visit friendsofbroomfield.org to learn more. FRIENDS of Broomfield relies on 25% of its $3 million annual budget to come from fundraising, so significant community support for events like the fashion show is crucial. All of the funds raised go towards creating person-centered and individualized programming for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Another fundraising event that has become a beloved tradition is the FRIENDS Variety Show, which is returning for its 17th year this fall. This year, the pre-

recorded show will be focused on the most popular songs from animated films. Join FRIENDS at Alamo Drafthouse on Saturday, October 15, for the exclusive premier of the entertaining music videos. FRIENDS will be rounding out the year with Friendsgiving, a thankfulness themed fundraiser that works through individual campaigns led by friends and families. FRIENDS is continuing to grow, expanding its programs and performing some much-needed facility updates and repairs. The supported employment program now has 40 individuals working in 23 local businesses. The residential program also has expanded with three Friends moving into the Academy Place Apartments, where they will grow their independence. The travel program is busier than ever, with 20 trips this year including visits to Disney World and Hawaii. Developing these programs allows FRIENDS to promote social, mental, and physical health. FRIENDS recently went through strategic planning that included board members, Friends participants, and community stakeholders. The group determined four goals to help guide the organization through the next five years. These goals are: developing the Board of Directors and Young Professionals Board, expanding community inclusion particularly in local schools, creating opportunities for affordable housing for the IDD community, and establishing a social enterprise in Broomfield to provide employment, vocational training, revenue, and community service. You can support FRIENDS in these efforts by joining a board, volunteering, or partnering to build a business.
Our Broomfield Magazine would like to congratulate Gina Coufal, founder and CEO of FRIENDS of Broomfield, on her selection to the Titan 100. The Titan 100 recognizes the top 100 CEOs in Colorado as the state’s most accomplished and exceptional business leaders. Gina said, “ I am honored and excited for the exposure to network and learn and grow, so I can bring back the experience to be a better leader and promote the mission of FRIENDS.”

Dip Into Literacy Fun with the A R Y R B I L D BROOMFIEL
S u m m e r R ea d i n g Program By Kristen Beckman
This summer, the Broomfield Public Library is setting out on an ocean adventure to encourage reading and literacy, and all of Broomfield is invited to join in on the fun. The theme for this year’s summer reading and activity program is “Oceans of Possibilities.” Pre-registration opened in May and the program runs from June 1 through July 21.
30
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | June 2022
“The Broomfield Summer Library Adventures reading program is designed to welcome readers of all ages and levels so they find enjoyment in reading and discover opportunities to connect to the Broomfield community through a variety of programs and activities, including reading,” said Sarah Johnson, children’s library supervisor. Johnson said the library expects a 20 percent increase in participation this summer after numbers declined in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Although the library continued to offer the program online in 2020, it was unable to offer prizes for completion. The Summer Library Adventures reading program included completion prizes again in 2021. This year, there are two age brackets for the program: newborn through 4 year olds, and 5 year olds through adults. Participants earn 15 points by logging activities or books in Beanstack, including listening to books and stories. Everyone who earns 15 points is automatically entered into the grand prize drawing and can pick up a completion prize at the library beginning June 6, while supplies last. Those who earn 20 points will get a bonus grand prize entry. Prizes for completion include a day pass to a Broomfield Recreation facility, a pass to Chipper’s Lanes, free coupons to Chick-fil-A, a free book for children and teens, and a mug for adults. The Broomfield Library also is offering a specific program to support struggling readers in 1st through 3rd grade. Rocket Readers Book Club is designed to help build reading fluency, strengthen comprehension, and practice social skills while preparing children for the next school year, said
Johnson. Each week will focus on a different book to read and discuss with peers along with an engaging activity to support the reading. The summer reading program includes a variety of activities and events, starting with an outdoor kick-off event June 4. The event will include active play, crafts, and the chance to sign up for the summer reading program. Drop in anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The Broomfield Library will also offer a variety of programs throughout the summer, including storytimes, summer concerts, movies, science programs, and more. A full listing of programs through the library can be viewed online at B-REx with the search term: SLA. “The Broomfield Library is a place to connect to books, information, and neighbors through the library collection, spaces, and the programs offered at the library and inventHQ,” said Johnson. “The Broomfield Summer Library Adventures reading program motivates children, teens, and adults to continue reading throughout the summer and helps families with young children to develop reading habits to support early literacy development starting at a young age.”
Visit broomfield.beanstack.org for more information, registration, events, and reading logs. More information is also available at www.broomfield.org/2644/Summer-Library-Adventures.

Offers Modern, Warm Approach to Honoring Loved Ones By Lisa Payne
Death does not have to feel heavy and intimidating, or carry a burden for those left behind. Death is something that is inevitable for all of us and the final act of honoring someone should feel comforting. Walking up to In Memoriam for this interview, it felt like a breath of fresh air. The building is a converted old farm house with white exterior and charming wood doors. Inside I expected dark walls and thick curtains of the traditional funeral home, but was pleasantly surprised by the warmth and comfort of the surroundings. Not only did the space wrap it’s arms around me, but the spa music playing softly in the background instantly calmed me. Kelsi Tesone Mathews, the owner, met me with a warm cup of coffee and her beautiful welcoming smile. Lisa: Kelsi, I have to admit I was nervous coming here. No one likes to talk about death. I expected to feel a heavy heart walking in here but you have done a beautiful job with the look and feel. I feel at home and peaceful. What made you start your business, In Memoriam? Kelsi: I worked at another funeral home for many years. One day it was purchased and overnight the feeling changed from intimate to foreign. It is so important to feel comfortable with the directors you will be working with to plan a funeral. I felt strongly that Broomfield needed broader choices that encompassed the values of a modern, local family-owned funeral home. A funeral home that would walk with the family through the planning process and all the choices involved. Lisa: How are you different from other funeral homes? Kelsi: I grew up in Broomfield and went to Broomfield High School. I know how strong the community is here and how important it would be to have a trusted family to handle every aspect of the process. If I don’t know the person we are caring for, I know someone who does know them. We are unique in many ways, but one of the biggest is that we have our crematory on-site. Once someone is brought into our care, they stay in our care. You can even choose to witness the cremation.
32
act. We have a lovely space right here for family to be with their loved one through cremation. We work with families at whatever capacity they want or need. We serve all different kinds of religions and cultures. One of my favorite things is to become fully immersed in each culture with each family and their traditions. Lisa: How else are you different? Kelsi: We also have two Mortuary Science Practitioners on staff which means they hold the highest level of education you can get here in Colorado. We understand that this is a time of deep grieving and you should be in a safe space to fully immerse yourself in those emotions while we handle everything else. Lisa: What information is important to gather before someone dies? Kelsi: I call it “The Box” – even an old shoe box works. It can include your will, any military documents (specifically DD214 for any military death benefits), financial institution information, birth and marriage certificates, and written end of life and funeral wishes. Lisa: How do you bring up end of life wishes with someone? Kelsi: You could start the conversation by asking where grandparents are buried and use it as a segue for their wishes. Preplanning is incredibly important so that family left behind doesn’t have to play detective for months. We would be honored to help anyone get started with how that may look.
Lisa: The family watches the cremation?
Please join In Memoriam on June 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for an open house and a ribbon cutting with the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce to showcase their exterior improvements. There will be snacks, free preplanning booklets, and other activities and information. Let this warm and comforting family and space wrap its arms around you, too.
Kelsi: Think of it as the equivalent of witnessing the casket being lowered into the ground. There can be a lot of release with that
Also please follow Kelsi on Instagram for educational funeral planning content and videos: @inmemoriamservices

D O I N G S O M E L A N D S C A P IN G THIS SUMMER? One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in stormwater runoff. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system.

Fire Station 61 REBUILD UNDERWAY By Bette Erickson
“Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose,” French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr said. The more things change, the more they remain the same. By now, many Broomfield residents and passers-by have no doubt seen the activity going on at North Metro Fire Station 61 on Midway Boulevard. The original fire station was torn down in December 2021 to make way for a larger, more modern station that will serve our community for decades to come. “We are making great progress on Station 61,” said North Metro Fire Deputy Chief David Anderson. “We are looking to move in to the new station this fall, and look forward to hosting an Open House so our community can see and enjoy what they helped build. Station 61 has always been at the heart of Broomfield, and we are happy to be able to grow with our community and continue to provide excellent emergency services to our residents.” What a landmark Fire Station 61 is. Those who have been in Broomfield for a long time may recall the numerous Flag Retirement ceremonies held at Station 61 at 1275 Midway Blvd., with police and fire honor guard, representatives from

equipment to allow firefighters to decontaminate their gear following incidents, better lighting and one-level living, and measures to reduce external noise for the surrounding neighborhood. Additionally, the new station will allow NMFRD to add enhanced emergency response resources for Broomfield to meet the community’s growth into the future. Once completed, a battalion chief overseeing emergency operations and personnel in Broomfield will be housed at Station 61, in addition to Engine 61 and Medic 61. Station 61 was originally built in 1956 and saw multiple remodels over the past 65 years. The new station will double in size compared with the former structure, providing approximately 12,000 square feet of space for living quarters and four bays housing emergency vehicles. The new Station 61 was designed by Allred Architects in Broomfield and is being constructed by Golden Triangle Construction, with a scheduled completion date in late 2022. As of May, the underground infrastructure and construction of the exterior walls was mostly completed, with crews focusing on framing out the interior walls and roofing operations. While construction is underway, North Metro Fire has strategically relocated its firefighters to minimize the impact to emergency response. Engine 61 and three firefighters are operating out of a temporary fire station on 1st Avenue next to North

BCAH Festival Series Returns to In-Person This Summer By Kristen Beckman
This summer, the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities presents its annual Summer Festival series in person, with events on Saturdays and Sundays for the first time.
BCAH started the series more than a decade ago to ensure Broomfield and surrounding communities had access to free, family-friendly events that appealed to all ages and provided artists and groups with an opportunity to connect with attendees in a free format. Since then, the events have grown from a handful of stations to large events featuring interactive booths hosted by many different creative and cultural groups, live performances, concerts, and special activities at each event, including face painting, bounce houses, and prize drawings. During the pandemic, BCAH had to re-think the format of the summer festival series to ensure the safety of participants. The Sunday festivals were transformed into Summer Saturday Drive-thru events in 2020 and were held in various locations including in front of the Broomfield Library and at the FlatIron Mall. The drive-thru experiences featured art displays, cultural artifact displays, live music, performances, and a classic car show. In 2021, BCAH tested out new formats and locations to explore how it could further adjust the program. In June 2021, the series began with a drive-thru event at FlatIron Mall. In July, the program tested a pop-up Summer Sunday Fest at the city’s

4th of July event, and in August, the series returned to its traditional location with an in-person festival at the Brunner Farmhouse & Gardens featuring carnival games, interactive booths, cultural demonstrations, bouncy houses and face painting. There was also a concert by the youth band In Plain Air and a finale concert by the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra and the Beverly Belles. This year, the festivals will be held in person on different weekend days and in different locations based on feedback from last year.
June’s event will take place on Saturday, June 11, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the outdoor food court at FlatIron Mall. In addition, there will be a bonus event on Saturday, June 25, when BCAH presents Science+Art Experience: Colorado Outdoors at Brunner Farmhouse and Garden’s new vegetable teaching garden. In July, the festival series reverts to Sundays, with the first event scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on July 10 at the Brunner Farmhouse & Gardens. The final event is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, at Brunner Farmhouse & Gardens. The events are free and attendance has grown year over year. Prior to the pandemic, up to 250 people attended each event, but BCAH expects more than 350 people from Broomfield and surrounding areas to attend this year, depending on the venue.

Baby Stevie
PRAYING FOR A MIRACLE Caregivers at Avista Adventist Hospital know that health care is more than medicine. Treating our patients means caring for the whole person – mind, body and spirit. When Kaitlin and Brian Schmidt found out in February 2021 they were expecting their second child, they were overjoyed at what seemed to be a miracle, after three failed IVF attempts in 2020. Kaitlin’s pregnancy proved to be far from easy, however. Between a miscarriage scare in her second trimester and the need to move to hospitalized bedrest at 34 weeks, baby Stevie seemed determined to keep her parents on their toes. With about a month left to go until her due date, an ambulance rushed Kaitlin to Avista Adventist Hospital. Kaitlin was hemorrhaging, and Stevie was safely delivered via emergency C-section thanks to the quick work of the Avista labor and delivery team. “It was so chaotic – it seemed like every person in the hospital rushed into that triage room,” Kaitlin recalled. Stevie came into the world with a loud cry, and her nurses quickly dubbed her one of the spunkiest, sassiest babies they had delivered at Avista. Kaitlin said, “We were just so relieved that she was here, and that she was okay. But then…she started to not be okay.” Stevie began to show signs of what her caregivers suspected to be an infection – or worse. After a barrage of tests, a head
ultrasound showed Stevie had a life-threatening brain bleed. “It was just devastating,” Kaitlin said. “Her prognosis was really bleak, and there was nothing I could do.” “We knew we had done all we could medically, and the only thing left to do was ask God to do his best and heal the child, and let Kaitlin and Brian know they were not alone,” said Johnnathan Ward, Director of Mission Integration at Avista.. Stevie had a long journey, spending the next 45 days in a NICU at a local children’s hospital, but the Schmidt family was finally able to welcome her home in October. Now, she is a healthy baby – still sassy and full of spunk – and absolutely adored by her older brother. Johnnathan recently sent baby Stevie a welcome-home gift: her very first Bible. “Stevie’s journey really demonstrates the power of prayer, the power of positive thinking, and of maintaining faith that God is present,” Johnnathan reflected.
