Avista Hospital Acknowledges Marshall Fire Superheroes

Just after noon on December 30, the Marshall Fire was reported more than a mile from the hospital, but extreme winds were rapidly pushing the fire closer. Through news reports and social media postings, Avista became a sort of benchmark for the severity and location of the fire. Many heroes were present within the hospital and on the frontlines of the wildfire. Isaac Sendross, CEO of Avista Adventist Hospital, would like to acknowledge their efforts both during and after the emergency.

EDITOR Our Milestones … and Traditions Milestone is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as: an important event in the development or history of something or in someone’s life. Tradition is defined in the same reference as: a belief, principle, or way of acting that people in a particular society or group have continued to follow for a long time.

It’s Our Broomfield’s birthday. And we are two! It might seem strange to celebrate a birthday or an anniversary for an inanimate entity, but it is what our society does. We mark our accomplishments, and the passage of time in acknowledgement of where we have been and where we are going. And we measure. Time being the most common marker. Last year, we celebrated our first birthday by giving thanks. It seems a good tradition to continue. As publisher of this magazine, I am first immeasurably thankful for the entire Our Broomfield team. Each person listed in the column just to the right of this article is critical to the execution and delivery of this magazine month after month. Nothing makes me more proud than hearing about your great experiences with the team, whether you are an advertiser, reader or article subject. I am so lucky to have my Our Broomfield family. EVENTS JULY 4 The Great American Picnic Broomfield’s annual 4th of July celebration will once again be held at the Broomfield County Commons Park. The Great American Picnic offers fun for the whole family. The fun starts at 5 p.m. with inflatables, NurfTerf games, face painting, and balloon animals for the kids. Kids and adults can also participate in the bike parade. Throughout the night, enjoy performances from Spinphony, an all-female electric string quartet that plays classical, rock, and pop selections, as well as Soul X, a variety band that showcases everything from modern hits and blues to 80s, funk, country, and more. Of course, many local vendors will be in attendance including a variety of sweet and savory food options and a beer garden. Picnic attendees are also welcome to bring a picnic if they prefer, as well as lawn games. The firework show will begin at 9:30 p.m. once the sun has set. While there is parking at the Broomfield Commons, attendees are encouraged to carpool, walk, or bike to the park if able, as parking is limited. Additional parking will be available at Legacy High School for overflow vehicles. RVs, trailers, campers, and extra-large vehicles are required to park at Legacy High School to help with crowding. A shuttle service will run between Legacy and the Broomfield Commons park from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

I’ve told you before how our family does “No buy July.” We don’t spend money on anything other than necessities for the whole month of July. Being wellness month in this magazine, I am going to give you ideas on how to have family fun and also take care of your well being this whole month … for FREE.

The kids will still want their Starbucks and fun outings, so let’s start with them. Does anyone in your family have a birthday this month? Check out www.thedenverear. com for birthday freebies all over Colorado. If you travel around and hit all the locations, everyone in your family can benefit. Free Starbucks and food anyone? There are also so many free admission days to take advantage of! Go to www.uncovercolorado.com and search free admission days for a plethora of options. They include national parks, the zoo, the Denver Botanic Gardens, Denver Art Museum, Plains Conservation Center, Museum of Nature and Science, Children’s Museum of Denver, and the Colorado Railroad Museum. So worth checking out! Other free ways to connect with your family include nature walks, decorate the whole driveway in chalk art, lay on a blanket and watch the stars, get up early to watch the sunrise somewhere beautiful or have a family poker night. The free ways to be with your people are endless. Now the good stuff. How to recharge yourself while your kids are home all summer long. This can be daunting especially if you are also working. There is simply no time to take care of you. But please take the time, even if it is only 10 minutes a day. Your kids (and partner) will thank you for it, I promise. Mental rest is incredibly important. There is not

one right way for everybody. You have to find out what relaxes you the most and stick with that. Maybe you work at home and have kids there too. Taking short, intentional mental breaks may be something you need. Perhaps a 10-minute meditation (so many free ones on YouTube) or a quick walk. Even coloring or listening to ocean waves on an app can relax your mind. (Or just lock yourself in the bathroom!) Physical rest is also necessary. Some people find it relaxing to move their bodies with yoga, walking or stretching. Others may find a quiet hammock or floating in a pool the most beneficial way for their body to rest. Another area to pay attention to is your sensory overload. Screen time as well as other noise and environmental stimuli all contribute to anxiety and anxious feelings. Shut off screens periodically. Use noise canceling headphones in the office or other places where you may be sensitive to noise. Please also check on your emotional and spiritual well being too. Nurturing a feeling of belonging and connection to others can do wonders for overall well being. Last but not least, if you’re having a crappy day and nothing else seems to be working, try this trick. Send someone a quick text or email telling them something you are grateful for about them. Your entire energy field will make a positive shift knowing you told someone you care. Love on others, and YOURSELF. Happy July! Lisa Payne writes about home, health, and family. Tips from Appearances Salon: How to Keep Your Hair Summer Fresh with Proper Care By Allison Eichner

In summer we have a desire for things to be fresh: fresh fruit, fresh pools, fresh beverages, and fresh hair. Once the sun comes out, many of us are ready for bright, refreshed hair whether it’s in preparation for an upcoming trip, or to revive an old winter style. For dips in the pool, Sondra suggests rinsing your hair before getting in the water and applying a hydrating leave-in conditioner. This quick step can help prevent your hair from absorbing extra chlorine. With another quick rinse after leaving the pool, your hair should feel much less dry or damaged.

Avista Hospital Acknowledges Marshall Fire Superheroes By Megan Mayes

The Marshall Fire devastated hearts and homes in the communities of Superior and Louisville. For many of us who watched the events of December 30 unfold, our minds were stuck on heroes and hospitals, particularly Avista Adventist Hospital. Just after noon, the fire was reported more than a mile from the hospital, but extreme winds were rapidly pushing the fire closer. Through news reports and social media postings, Avista became a sort of benchmark for the severity and location of the fire. Many heroes were present within the hospital and on the frontlines of the wildfire. Isaac Sendross, CEO of Avista Adventist Hospital, would like to acknowledge their efforts both during and after the emergency.

Through the stages of pre-evacuation and total evacuation, 51 patients and all caregivers were able to safely leave in less than two hours with no loss of life. In coordination with EMS partners, ambulances and other patient transport vehicles quickly lined up outside the Emergency Department and transferred patients to two sister Centura Health facilities. Facility team members used hoses and buckets of water to protect oxygen tanks while spot fires burned near the building. Although the fire did not cause structural damage, the hospital suffered smoke damage, which staff tried to limit by shutting off the air system to prevent the circulation of smoke. “Our caregivers and leaders knew their roles and knew exactly what needed to be done. Their priority was to get patients out safely, and they did just that. You prepare for tabletop exercises where you run through

scenarios of evacuating, never imagining you would actually have to evacuate with the hospital surrounded by fire. The fact that we were able to do it safely in under two hours is just testament to the great team we have at Avista,” said Sendross. Hospital heroes were strong and persistent: one nurse helped to evacuate a mother in labor and did not leave her side until the baby was born long after her shift had ended, while another watched smoke consume her neighborhood while she continued to care for patients. A dozen caregivers suffered a complete loss of their homes, and dozens more suffered a partial loss. Centura Health has invested financially and emotionally in supporting these caregivers with housing assistance, payroll contributions, and paid time off. The hospital was closed for a very thorough cleaning before safely and fully reopening on January 18, 2022, and continues to undergo air quality monitoring – the results of which have been excellent. During the 19-day closure, Avista caregivers worked shifts at the other Centura hospitals that took in patients on the day of the fire. Many of those caregivers also went into Avista when it was safe to help clean and prepare for reopening. “We couldn’t have reopened to our communities so quickly were it not for the teamwork our caregivers showed,” he said. “The outpouring of support from our community as a whole, for our hospital, and caregivers following the Marshall Fire, has been gracious and heartfelt, and for that we will be forever grateful. I know this support is hardly limited to our hospital and has been felt across the community by the acts of kindness and support for those who lost a

home or business. The Marshall Fire proved we aren’t just a hospital. We are loving neighbors helping loving neighbors. In moments of darkness, our communities look to us for light; in moments of despair, they rely on us to provide them hope. I am grateful that we are once again providing light and hope through our ministry at Avista, and we are so glad to be able to once again serve our communities,” commented Sendross.

I let Lindsey know that I was not completely comfortable with invasive treatments and really needed an education before I decided what I wanted. So she started me out with some basic services. I received a Dermaplane treatment and Intraceuticals Oxygen facial. Dermaplane involves the use of a very fine razor to remove the fine hair and the very top layer of dry skin from your face. The Oxygen facial then provides deep moisture and is very nourishing. My skin felt amazing! And I looked fresh and rested for days. I loved this so much I asked how often this treatment could be repeated. Lindsey said four to six weeks is a good marker. During my treatment, Lindsey asked about my sun exposure and reminded me of the importance of protecting

my face from the sun.
