Please enjoy our second annual Home issue! You will find dozens of local providers of home products and services in our directory to help you get started on your spring and summer home update plans.

Broomfield is working on some updates too! Applications are being accepted for the next phase of the Traffic Box Wrap project. The City and County of Broomfield in partnership with the Arts, History, and Cultural Council is seeking artists to create works to transform traffic boxes into public artwork throughout the community. Professional and non-professional artists, including emerging artists, hobbyists, and students, may apply. Selections will be made by the Arts, History, and Cultural Council subcommittee with submissions divided between artists 18 and over, and those 17 and under. Up to 25 total artworks will be selected and finalists will receive a $750 stipend for each selected final design. Installation is scheduled to be complete by the end of October, 2022 with the application deadline on April 30. Visit https://www.broomfield.org/241/Creative-Broomfield for details. As noted last month, local calendars are filling with some great events this Spring! Items should be placed in a visible location and labeled “ARC.” Note: Western Disposal will have two trucks picking up items. Please divide items into two separate piles - recycling (untreated wood and metal) and waste.

BUSY FAMILIES

HOME IMPROVEMENT That Doesn’t Ruin Your Relationship By Lisa Payne

It’s spring, which means home improvement projects are on the horizon. And these projects can be so fun! I mean, look at all of the HGTV shows and how perfectly they go and the couples never argue. So realistic. Or not! Can Chip and Joanna really be as happy as they seem?

A survey in Houzz said that after interviewing 1,400 couples post home project, 12% considered a separation after. Whoa! But the good news is that 46% said the collaboration ended up being just fine. I have been through a few home projects with my husband. Luckily for me he has good taste. Or at least my kind of taste. But there have definitely been times when we disagreed and the moments got tense. I think we learned to take turns caving in to the other person. That was our way of dealing with disagreement. As stressful as it is to undergo a home renovation project together, there are ways to keep your marriage from falling apart during the process. Here is some common wisdom from different couples who survived these projects. It may be wise to consider their advice before starting your own investment in home renovation. Never hire family. That is pretty self-explanatory. And don’t do the project yourself. You are spending money to have something done correctly, so hire someone who can do it better than you can. Unless of course you are the pro. Then have at it! Another piece of advice is to divvy up the decisions. If one of you gets to pick out the décor and flooring, perhaps the other one gets to pick out the new furniture for the room. If one picks out the paint color in the kitchen, the other picks it out in the master bedroom. Be sure to talk budget and be on the same page. If you hire the cheap contractor and buy the cheapest materials and appliances, will you be happy when your cabinets don’t close right or the tile is crooked? You always get what you pay for. Most importantly, are you seriously worried that a big project might ruin your relationship? You could try a small project together to test the waters, like tiling the front entryway. And instead of hiring a contractor to redo your whole kitchen and THEN picking out décor, spend some time together first looking at tile, countertops, and flooring to see if you can agree. If all goes well, then you can hire the contractor. If picking things out was a disaster, maybe you should consider moving to a new home that is already remodeled that way you both will be happy. For me, sometimes new throw pillows, a new area rug, and a decorative blanket is all you need to redo the look of a room. Maybe even a few plants you can talk to when no one else is home. Whatever you choose to do, I wish you much success and many relaxing moments in your new space! Lisa Payne writes about home, family, and food. You can reach her at paynefam6@gmail.com.

Contact Unique Heating and Air Conditioning for Your Heating and Cooling Repairs or Upgrade By Missy Ruzicka

As spring fast approaches, it’s time to start thinking about those home improvement projects you want to get done this year. The to-do list grows quickly, so why not enlist someone who can help get your house ready for the summer months. The folks over at Unique Heating and Air can help make sure that your HVAC system is working efficiently which will protect your home, reduce energy bills, and add life to your equipment.

U

nique Heating and Air has been working hard in the Denver metro area for 15 years now and what customers have come to notice is they provide better service with reliable employees who offer fair pricing and have a reputation for fast, quality service. Over the years the business has grown and they have an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau which is backed up by pages of testimonials from their customers. Their NATEcertified technicians work with only the best tools and are knowledgeable with all brands, so they can better serve your residential or light commercial property needs. Unique Heating and Air has some suggestions that will help your house and your family be more comfortable and healthier. They say it’s important to get your HVAC system inspected at least once a year, so they can examine and clean your unit to ensure it’s in proper working order. Springtime is a great time for those inspections so you can get needed repairs, or for that older unit to be replaced before our beautiful Colorado summer heat kicks in. They also suggest that you should have your air ducts cleaned at least every 3-5 years. Not only will it help your air quality, but it will allow maximum airflow from your HVAC

system. Anything that cuts down the amount of dust is a win! On top of getting your air ducts cleaned by an EPA-certified team, you can have an ActivePure Air Scrubber installed, which will make the air you and your family breathe healthier every single day by removing contaminants from the air and surfaces like dust, odors, and other allergens. After spending some quality time at home these last couple years, the thought of healthier cleaner air in the house sounds like a great idea. Unique Heating and Air is a full-service HVAC company with services that cover furnaces, air conditioning units, heat pumps, water heaters, thermostats, duct work and cleaning, and indoor air quality products. They offer a 10-year warranty on parts and labor for all new systems along with 100% customer satisfaction. Clean out the garage without filling up the landfill by putting your hard to recycle items curbside during Spring Clean Up, operating this year on Saturdays from April 23 to May 14. Find your zone and pick-up date at Broomfield.org/SpingCleanUp.

Don’t forget to bring paints, cleaning supplies, and other hazardous waste to the free Household Hazardous Waste event held at the Broomfield Municipal Shops, 3951 W 144th Ave., on May 7, 2022; appointments open April 4 and can be made at Broomfield.org/HHW.

Additional waste reduction resources like the Broomfield Recycling Center and Tree Branch Recycling Center are available year-round. View hours and accepted materials at Broomfield. org/Treebranch and Broomfield.org/RecyclingCenter.

With energy costs increasing, you can take sustainable steps to reduce heating and cooling costs. According to Xcel Energy, natural gas bills for the average household are projected to be about $98 per month in 2022, that’s up from $71 in 2021. Several programs are available to help all residents reduce these costs, regardless of income or homeownership status. Some examples include a visit from Xcel Energy’s Home Energy Squad®, a free service that offers professional assistance to understand your home’s energy use to help save money on utility bills, or participating in Colorado’s Residential Affordable Energy Program, which provides free energy audits and some energy upgrades such as LED light bulb swaps, low-flow fixtures, air sealing, insulation, and HVAC services for qualified residents. United Power and Xcel Energy also have rebates and incentives to help lower the costs of energy efficiency upgrades. Learn about these programs and more at Broomfield.org/SaveEnergy.

Water conservation programs help you save water and cash. Residents can book free outdoor water audits to make sure your sprinklers are using the least amount of water possible by checking timing, flow rate, and sprinkler head obstructions. More than 800 Broomfield residents have participated in these free audits, resulting in an estimated 300,000 gallons of water saved annually. In fact, the average participant saves around 5,000 gallons of water per year!

More ways to further reduce your outdoor water costs include replacing grass with easy to install, professionally designed xeriscape landscapes or gardens called Garden in a Box, which use less water and contain native plants, shrubs, and grasses. Garden in a Box kits are available in the spring and fall, and Broomfield residents receive a discount while supplies last. Need to remove grass to make room for your new xeriscape garden? Sign up for a discount on lawn removal services to help prepare for xeriscaping. Learn about these programs and more at Broomfield.org/SaveWater.

You can also reduce energy spent on food transportation and storage by planting a backyard garden to grow some of your own fruits or vegetables. For help getting your garden started, watch some free online gardening classes at Broomfield.org/GREENCalendar, or participate in the new Seed Library with CSU! Through the seed library, residents can “check out” fruit, vegetable, herb, and ornamental seeds that thrive in Broomfield’s specific climate. Become a seed swap member or learn more at the first community seed swap from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Library on April 23.

No matter your family size, income level or homeownership status, you can help make your home more sustainable! For more information on sustainable living, subscribe to Broomfield’s sustainability newsletter at Broomfield.org/BintheLoop.

Window Coverings

Bring Beauty, Efficiency to Homes Windo VanGo Can Help with the Latest Solutions By Missy Ruzicka

Did you know that according to the Department of Energy, a house without energy efficient window coverings can lose 30% of its heating or cooling energy right out the window? I knew windows let the warmth in, for you can usually find me curled up in my big overstuffed chair soaking in the sun on a wintery sunny day, but to lose that much energy means my husband was right when he said we need to get better window coverings for the house. Let’s not tell him he was right, ok?

Looking for new window coverings can be daunting; cellular, roller, solar, vertical, shutters, wood or powered, there’s so much to choose from. Good news is the folks over at Windo VanGo have a wonderful showroom that showcases all the latest Hunter Douglas products and as a Centurion Member, they are part of the elite Hunter Douglas Alliance Program. Located in the Broomfield Marketplace, they have window covering experts that can help you find the style you’re looking for and help your house become as energy efficient as possible. From custom blinds and shutters, to shades and draperies, they have it all. They even have Powerview automation shades that let you program exactly what time you want to let that morning sun into your room with an app on your phone. That would be great for those teenagers who are allergic to mornings. How about those small, odd shaped windows your builder thought would be unique for your home but now you struggle to find anything that will cover them? At Windo VanGo, they’ve got you covered with window treatment solutions for angled, arched, circular, and every shape in between. Just let them know your needs

when you schedule your consultation and they will help you find the perfect covering that offers the right balance of privacy, lighting, and energy efficiency. They are currently promoting their Duette Architella Honeycomb Shades; the most energy efficient cellular shade currently on the market. What makes the Duette Shades so energy efficient is their unique honeycomb design that traps the air for an extra layer of insulation. With the Duette Architellas you get a honeycomb inside a honeycomb design giving you more layers for more insulating pockets. And right now, when you buy Duette Architella Honeycomb shades that qualify, you get a $25 per shade mail-in rebate. Also, for those who have Xcel Energy for their gas and electric company, you will receive a $1.33 per square foot of window covered back in rebate. Take a look at the photo gallery located on the Windo VanGo website, which not only shows great ideas for window treatments but has fun decorating tips and tricks for all the seasons. Windo VanGo is a local family-owned business that’s been serving Broomfield and its surrounding communities for more than 25 years. When the devastating Marshall Fire happened earlier this year, they were helping out where they could and donating to the victims. Even now they want those affected to know they can get 25% discount when they come in. Neighbors helping neighbors. To learn more visit: www.windovango.org.

Linda DeLano Helps Insurance Clients Stay Protected Through the Unexpected By Kristen Beckman

The events of the past couple of years – including a global pandemic and a sudden wildfire that destroyed nearly 1,000 homes – have taught us that unexpected events can impact us without warning. Insurance products are there to help people plan for the unexpected and overcome the most difficult circumstances they face. Helping people plan for the unexpected, and the expected, is the reason Linda DeLano decided to build a career in the insurance industry two decades ago. DeLano grew up in Northglenn, attended Northglenn High School, and studied marketing at the University of Northern Colorado. She now lives in Westminster, on the border of Broomfield. “I really wanted to do something where I could help people and make a change in their lives,” said DeLano. “I wanted to protect my clients and help them achieve financial freedom.”

24

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | April 2022

DeLano offers retirement planning and advises clients on a host of insurance products available from Country Financial, including home, auto, and life products. Country Financial still operates much like a small hometown business despite its nationwide presence after nearly a century in business. The company initially offered farm insurance out of its headquarters in Bloomington, Illinois, and later expanded into life insurance, auto insurance, and retirement planning. Today, instead of focusing on advertising to build its brand, the company and its representatives focus on engaging with the community on a local level to build its business and reputation. DeLano and her team, for example, provide lunch to several firehouses each month and recently provided a turkey dinner donated by 5280 Burger Bar to crews that responded to the Marshall Fire. DeLano said it is important for people to realize that their insurance needs will evolve over time and in response to events, and sometimes that can mean lower premiums. For example, clients who are now working from home in the wake of the pandemic might be eligible to lower their rates for auto coverage because they are driving less. However, often people need to make sure their insurance coverage remains adequate to cover potential losses, a lesson highlighted by the Marshall Fire. Some homeowners have found their insurance

Donʼt be surprised at claim time. Get the right home insurance today. Iʼll help make sure you choose the coverage you need, so youʼre prepared if you have to file a claim. Linda Delano Financial Representative 9191 Sheridan Blvd Ste 202 Westminster, CO, 80031-3020 (303)404-0611

coverage is inadequate to fully compensate them for their devastating losses. Although a number of DeLano’s clients suffered losses during the Marshall Fire, none will find themselves underinsured because Country Financial provides additional replacement coverage. Standard policies required by mortgage companies cover the repair and replacement of homes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the entire cost is covered. Different policies provide different levels of payout, she said. DeLano said people often don’t think of different coverages that might protect them in various circumstances, such as renters insurance and policies that cover high-value items like jewelry, tools, artwork, and bicycles. In addition, policies also offer benefits that may be worthwhile like rental insurance and roadside assistance within auto policies. Everybody is different and has different insurance needs, said DeLano. “You can’t paint everybody with the same brush. It’s always changing,” she said. “The important thing is to find a local representative and to take the time to go over everything.” To review your current insurance coverage or explore your options, reach out to Linda at 303-404-0611 or linda.delano@countryfinancial.com.

Olson Outdoors has been providing lawn mowing and landscaping services to the Broomfield area since 2014. We are a local Colorado business dedicated to providing our clients with elite services by paying attention to every small detail. Olson Outdoors understands that most properties cannot accommodate the big, heavy stand-on type mowers without significant turf, edging, and sprinkler head damage. That is why we only utilize small 30-inch mowers for our residential clients, which offer a superior cut and a collection of grass clippings. These clippings and other yard waste are fed to our local Broomfield goats. Whatever your lawn care needs are, please do not hesitate to reach out to our friendly and knowledgeable office staff!

Looking to purchase a home? Krissy embraces her passion for customer care and empowers each potential home buyer throughout the entire process, so they make informed, considerate decisions that ensure their home mortgages fit their budgets and keep their families financially secure. She also helps make the mortgage process smoother for buyers and sellers with the proprietary Performance Guarantee, which provides a Certificate of Qualification, virtually ensuring that buyers have the finances available to make an offer on a property and close quickly and easily. Krissy will take the time to walk you through the loan process and be there for you even after closing day!

Organization is Key to Optimal

Home Office Design By Kristen Beckman

The home office has taken on new importance since the onset of the pandemic. Millions of people working from home proved the viability and often the benefits of remote work, and many companies are now implementing or considering implementing hybrid work models that allow flexibility for employees to work from home beyond the pandemic.

A

Gartner survey of human resources professionals conducted last year found that 60 percent of employers plan to allow their employees to work from home occasionally, about half anticipate designating certain days for work from home, and nearly one-third plan a permanent shift to remote work arrangements. As hybrid and remote work arrangements evolve from temporary to permanent, so too should the physical space people are using to work remotely, whether they are using a dedicated room or office or carving a workspace out of another room in the house. Beyond setting up an office with optimal lighting, noise control, and connectivity, incorporating all of the equipment, materials, and supplies needed is perhaps the

biggest challenge of designing a home office that promotes focus and efficient work, but doesn’t clutter living areas. Creating a functional home office is one of the biggest requests professional organizer Beth Blacker has received from clients since the start of the pandemic. Blacker is founder of It’s Just Stuff, a home organizing and move management company serving the Denver metro area. “There are inherent challenges because the space available just may not be conducive for a productive work area especially if there isn’t a closet or shelving already in place,” said Blacker. “A cubby system like the ones sold at Target and Walmart is definitely an inexpensive but highly efficient way to organize a lot of supplies in a very contained manner if you have the room to implement one.”

“Now more than ever, the home office is essential to our daily lives”

To Do:

If floor space is limited, Blacker suggests installing floating shelves on office walls. “That is prime ‘real estate’ that a lot of people tend to not think about,” said Blacker. “Bins and baskets will be your best friend for keeping likeitems together whether on the shelves or in the cubbies.” Ashlie Adam, owner and principal designer at Ashlie Adam Interiors, a local full-service design firm specializing in residential renovations, is also a fan of using baskets for office organization “Now more than ever, the home office is essential to our daily lives,” said Adam. “No longer are we leaving the clutter at the office because our office is in our home. “A key to good design is bringing in texture,” said Adam. “Baskets are one of my favorite ways to add texture in any room. Woven baskets are perfect for home office organization. You can hold office supplies, documents, or your favorite snacks for break time in a basket. Neatly lining up the baskets on an open shelf or below a credenza or desk will create a design rich in texture and will be clean and free of clutter.” Creating a functional, organized, and appealing office space doesn’t have to be expensive. “Obviously The Container Store is a one-stop-shop for all of the things you might possibly need and while they tend to be more aesthetically appealing, they aren’t cheap,” said Blacker. “Believe it or not, dollar stores often have great organizing solutions so if you aren’t looking for what I often say are the most Instagram worthy options – meaning that picture-perfect look – you may be pleasantly surprised with what you can get for much less money if you are willing to shop around a little.” April 2022 | Our Broomfield™ Magazine

Christina Surprenant Brings a Lifetime of Local Knowledge to Real Estate Business By Kristen Beckman

It’s no secret that the real estate market has been running on overdrive for the past couple of years. Homeowners, on average, gained more than $56,000 in their home’s equity in the last year nationwide, and in Broomfield, that number is even higher.

Broomfield saw some of the largest value gains in the Denver Metro region last year at nearly 20 percent, said RE/MAX Momentum Associate Christina Surprenant. At the same time, limited inventory is driving prices to unexpected records. “The real estate market is surprising all of us every single day,” said Surprenant. “During this unprecedented time, it has never been more important seller’s investment while having for consumers to retain a trustworthy, seasoned, local professional to advise the best chance to make it to the them on buying and selling.” closing table. It’s Spring!

Time to Think About Summer and Plan Your Garden Now By Bette Erickson

You know, when spring rolls around, many of us daydream about gardening and all its splendor. I’m no different. I’ve always loved spring and summer gardening and caring for houseplants all year round. When I was a young woman, working in the plant department at a local “Dime Store” in Battle Creek, Michigan, I read a book titled “Making Things Grow” by Thalassa Cruso. With a French braid positioned on her head, she was a frequent guest on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. My British Grandmother fancied Ms. Cruso because she was also a wonderful, no-nonsense Brit. Ms. Cruso went on to write “To Everything There Is a Season,” and I was hooked on becoming the best hobby-gardener I could become. I like to share my interest in gardening with others – young and

Gardening is one of the most popular hobbies for people of all ages and abilities. For further inspiration here are a couple of additional titles for the little wanna-be gardeners in your life, just in time for spring and summer activities: “ The Buried Treasure,” by Djemma Bider “ The Garden – Frog and Toad Together,” by Arnold Lobel “ This Year’s Garden,” by Cynthia Rylant “ A Child’s Book of the Garden: The Things in Our Garden,” (Special Edition) by Arthur Ransome “ We Are the Gardeners,” by Joanna Gaines and Julianna Swaney

old. (That’s much different than proclaiming I’m good at gardening.) Anyway, if you’re interested in dabbling in gardening, try starting with an herb garden. If I had to choose one group of plants to grow, herbs would be at the top of that list. Herbs are versatile and attractive plants. Many smell really great and

they can be used in all sorts of ways. Plus, herbs are decidedly some of the easiest plants to grow. Few are bothered by insects and many can even withstand a bit of neglect, which is advantageous if you are new to gardening. Those of us who enjoy cooking and eating may also enjoy nurturing a windowsill or countertop herb garden. Try growing some oregano you can use on pizza or chives for which you could embellish a salad or grow some fragrant dill to use on tuna salad. If you like sweet smelling herbs, perhaps grow some that you could make use of in homemade potpourri, like mints, lemon balm, and rosemary. Additionally, there are many craft ideas that call for herbs, from scented pillows to dried flower arrangements.

Another fun activity to do for yourself or with a youngster is to watch bulbs blossom into flowers. A month ago, I watched as my tulip bulbs bloomed to life inside in a vase with shallow water. If you potted up spring-blooming bulbs and stored them in a dark garage, shed or crawlspace last fall, March and April are good months to bring them into your home to come to life. If you didn’t store any bulbs from your garden last year, you can purchase some at a nursery or even pre-packaged at a grocery store. Daffodils, tulips, crocus, and hyacinths are ideal to get you in the mood for spring and summer gardening. Bette Erickson writes about people, places, and events. BROOMFIELD COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Prepares for Derby Day, Heart of Broomfield Nominations By Allison Eichner

For the first time, Broomfield is celebrating the most exciting two minutes in sports: The Kentucky Derby. The Broomfield Community Foundation will host the first annual Broomfield Derby Day on May 7, 2022, at Spartan College. This fundraising event will directly support the Broomfield Community Foundation’s efforts to serve the Broomfield community through human services, arts, education, senior services, and civic projects.

42

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | April 2022

Derby Day will be aptly on theme; guests are encouraged, but not required, to wear their best Derby Attire, hats and all! At the end of the night prizes will be awarded for best hat and best attire. In addition, attendees will enjoy themed appetizers, custom cocktails, beer and wine, a photobooth, and more. This will be Broomfield Community Foundation’s first in person event in two years. Executive Director of Advancement, Marianna Williamson, said, “Our last in person event was the 2020 Heart of Broomfield Awards (the 20th Annual) in early March, so this opportunity to show our gratitude to our amazing partners and supporters is long overdue!” Like many philanthropy groups, gathering to raise funds for their causes is essential for their mission. In addition to supporting the five main service categories, “funds will be designated for BCF's Emergency Fund, which is designed to fulfill unmet needs for local families. We work closely with local nonprofits to supplement or cover the cost of services or programming when other resources have been explored and exhausted. At the Broomfield

Community Foundation we believe in the combined power of community, generosity, and philanthropy to create a greater Broomfield for us all,” said Williamson. BCF also has opened scholarship applications for the fall of 2022. The scholarships are open to Broomfield area high school seniors applying to college in the fall. Deadlines and qualifications vary, so applicants are advised to review the scholarships closely. To view or apply for the offered scholarships, visit BroomfieldFoundation.org/Scholarships. In addition, Heart of Broomfield nominations are open now! This year’s Heart of Broomfield Awards will take place on September 22, 2022. Recognizing community members in a number of categories, the event is designed to honor those who have demonstrated community impact and dedicated service. Nominations close on May 13, 2022. To nominate someone please visit BroomfieldFoundation.org/Heart. Broomfield Derby Days is May 7, 2022, from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Spartan College, 10851 W 120th Ave., Broomfield. Sponsorship opportunities are still available and open to register for through the ticketing website. Broomfield High School JAM Provides Safe, Memorable Celebration for Prom Goers By Missy Ruzicka

Chances are that if you live in Broomfield you’ve heard of Broomfield High School’s JAM, have attended JAM, volunteered at a JAM, donated to a JAM or have been lucky enough to experience it all. Just After Midnight aka JAM, is BHS’s after prom party. The school is transformed into a magical party venue designed annually around a secret theme not revealed until the party begins! The halls of the school are not even recognizable! Since 1990 a team of up to 400 dedicated parents, teachers, and community volunteers gather to put together an extravagant night, a safe place for juniors and seniors to bring their dates for a night of games, gambling, food, and prizes. They don’t even have to attend Prom to come celebrate at the after party with their classmates. It takes a pretty special community to put this all together for the kids and without the dedication of these volunteers it wouldn’t be the major success it has been for the past 32 years. Andrea Wallace volunteered for JAM for 8 years; for 5 of those she co-chaired and recalled how she loved getting to know the other parents, and being creative, but most of all watching the students enjoy the fruits of their labor at JAM. Jill Spencer volunteered and loved how it provided a safe environment that the kids genuinely looked forward to and she enjoyed seeing how much the kids loved it. This year Cristy Butcher and Erika Pazol are the experienced JAM leaders and both agree it’s a great event to be a part of. They say working closely with friends and BHS staff and watching the community come together is exciting. “We have an amazing community that we are lucky enough to be a part of.” Megan Mayes (Class of 2016) spoke about how much love and effort went into JAM. “Year after year the community pulls together to give Broomfield teenagers a one-of-a-kind experience.” She said growing up in Broomfield she always looked forward to the community walk through and couldn’t wait to be in high school so she could attend. Then as a student it was a night to be totally carefree. No pressures from AP tests or college applications, just a night to be a kid rolling down the bouncy slide, riding giant trikes, and just being goofy with your classmates. Her sister Allison Eichner (Class of 2018) talked about her favorite theme which was the “Turn the Page” book theme. “It was so fun as a senior to just spend the whole night playing and being a kid with my whole class before we graduated.” She said the school and the JAM volunteers

46

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | April 2022

do such a good job of honoring the seniors and making the night truly special for them. This year JAM will be on April 30, from Just After Midnight to 4:00 a.m. Like the alumni mentioned, it takes a special community to pull this all together and the list of sponsors is impressive. Everyone from neighborhood dentists, tattoo parlors, restaurants, car dealers, and realtors, to event centers and recreation centers. Sill-TerHar Motors and IPie are just some of JAM’s longtime supporters. Volunteers are still needed and any amount of time you could give would be much appreciated. There is room for everyone to help, you don’t even have to have a BHS student. Please see the sign-up genius on bhsjam.com if you can help. If you want to get a look at the school transformed for JAM, plan to attend the Community Walk-Through at 6:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on April 30. Donations are encouraged.

BAL SWAN TO SPONSOR

Featuring

FUN AND RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES By Missy Ruzicka

W

hat child doesn’t love it when they go into the grocery store and they have kid-sized carts just for them?! I know my kids always loved to push theirs around the store putting in their cereal and snack choices. If your kids are anything like mine, well you are in luck because Bal Swan Children’s Center is hosting its inaugural Tiny Tot Town. Imagine being a kid and having an entire town, just your size, made with love, just for you to come and play. On April 9, the Broomfield High School Gymnasium will be turned into Tiny Tot Town where kids can play and parents can learn about community resources. Come stroll through the kid size streets filled with things like the Warrior challenge arena, a yoga studio, a library, and even a kidssized bank just to name a few. Bal Swan’s Executive Director Debbie Kunz said she had hosted a Tiny Tot Town in the Missouri town she moved from where she was a part of a large parent organization. Now she has brought the idea with her to Broomfield. The building of a project this size is no small venture as it takes a lot of love for ideas this big, not to mention an amazing community of businesses, and a team of creative volunteers to bring it all together. Blue Credit Union, Macaroni KID, and Broomfield High School are just some of the community leaders helping Bal Swan build

everything needed for the event. Debbie says all the displays will be wonderful and she is excited about building the ‘school’ with local high school kids, some of whom attended Bal Swan themselves. As you might know, Bal Swan Children’s Center is a oneof-a-kind place which offers an educational environment that is inclusive to all children and has a welcoming environment that sets kids up to succeed. Twenty-three years ago, our daughter was born with a congenital heart defect, Tetralogy of Fallot, and she needed multiple surgeries and procedures. We wanted her to have as normal of a childhood as possible and when my friend told me about Bal Swan and how they welcomed her daughter who had special needs, I knew that was the perfect place for us. At Bal Swan Kaitlyn got to go to school with kids who came from all kinds of backgrounds with all different paths to walk or roll down. I loved our time at Bal Swan and always cherished the lifelong friendships not only my daughter made there but those I did as well. Bal Swan truly is a special place for children and their families and Tiny Tot Town is no exception. The first 200 families in the door will receive a parent resource bag filled with flyers and coupons from various community vendors and there also will be food trucks to purchase food out in the parking lot.

Families of all sizes are welcome at Bal Swan’s Inaugural Tiny Tot Town on April 9 at Broomfield High School from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For more information visit www.balswan.org.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors, Especially When You Need It Most In an emergency, when every second counts, you can rely on caregivers right here in your community to do what’s right for you and your health – and fast. Our caregivers in the ER at Centura-Avista Adventist Hospital are not only experts in providing excellent medical care. Their work is also personal: “Avista is my first choice to bring my own family for emergency care,” says Paul Hooge, a Nurse Clinical Coordinator. A leader on the night shift, Paul helps to coordinate all aspects of a well-functioning Emergency Department, including collaborating with doctors, nurses, and other specialties. He also cares for patients himself. “Often, my patients are incredible sources of inspiration in my own life. My mission is to lead by example, providing compassionate, proficient care to our patients and unwavering support for our caregivers.”

well in her native country. “My Dad was a paramedic and a military veteran, and so I think I got my ‘servant’s heart’ from him.” After many years of experience, her passion and instincts were on full display during the Marshall Fire, when she oversaw the safe evacuation of patients and caregivers. She also managed the extensive cleaning of the ER leading up to Avista’s reopening in January. “We are open and we are more ready than we have EVER been to serve you!”

You will find our hospital at 100 Health Park Dr. in Louisville, near Dillon Rd. and S. 88th St.

I have always had a passion for caring for others.” Caroline, who is from South Africa, wanted to become a nurse even though it was not a profession that paid Learn more about our caregivers and services by visiting www.avistahospital.org
