Where Business Meets Community

Back in early 1961, just a few months after the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce was born, the Chamber held a contest to choose its first slogan. The winning entry came from resident Phil Reines, who won the contest with “Broomfield: Today’s Community of Tomorrow.”

Fast forward 63 years, and Broomfield really has fulfilled the promise of that slogan. What started as a farming and ranching community has transformed into a modern city with a diverse economy. Broomfield touts major employers like Oracle, Ball Corporation, Crocs, and Hunter Douglas, as well as a growing number of startups and small businesses. Broomfield is a city that’s always on the move.

In addition to a prospering business community, Broomfield is rich in stunning natural beauty. We are home to an expansive, interconnected parks and trails system, and we’re the gateway to the gorgeous Rocky Mountains. We’re also home to a number of high-quality restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues, as well as a variety of recreational facilities, including golf courses, swimming pools, and sports fields.

At the Broomfield Area Chamber, we work every day to help Broomfield be warm and welcoming to residents and businesses. We like to say that we’re “where business meets community.” We help local businesses grow and prosper. We connect the business community to potential customers, as well as connecting both to the nonprofit community. We also advocate on behalf of our business community; working to make sure that the interests of our businesses are represented to our local and state leaders.

It’s our hope that the 2023 Broomfield Area Chamber Guide will help you discover, or re-discover, everything this wonderful community has to offer. From our rich history and vibrant amenities to our unique features and business community.

Enjoy!

FROM THE EDITOR & PUBLISHER

Our Chamber

The Broomfield Area Chamber of Commerce was founded and first opened its doors more than 60 years ago. The date is significant, in Broomfield’s history, and in fact, in my own family’s.

The first ever recorded “organization of businesses” has roots in France dating back to 1599. In the United States, the New York Chamber of Commerce was the first Chamber founded in 1768, with dozens of others forming in the immediate years after, and now counting more than 5000 strong across the United States.

The Broomfield Area Chamber of Commerce came to be around the same time as the City of Broomfield itself. The year was 1961. That same year, my grandfather became a businessman in Broomfield operating the town’s only hotel at the time, which had an adjoining Italian restaurant, also run by my grandparents. And we have found records showing his involvement in the early days of Broomfield’s Chamber.

These early roots led to my parents making their home here with their young family in the early 1970s when my father was working in Boulder at IBM. The Broomfield “bedroom community” seemed the perfect place to settle and raise a family. Years later, having also raised a family here, I agree that it was a great call.

There is so much about Broomfield that makes it highly desirable, each quality elegantly looping back to one word: community. Our schools, non-profits, recreation programs, religious organizations, City and County organizations end-to-end, neighborhoods, and of course businesses, are each a critical part of the fabric of our Broomfield community. All of those things together plus you and me!

And my husband Pat and I are proud to have grown up here and stayed, and now to be a part of the Broomfield business community as the owners and publishers of Our Broomfield Magazine. It is a privilege to bring community news, information, and events to every Broomfield home each month, and an honor to work alongside other Broomfield businesses, in mutual support. The Broomfield Area Chamber is a critical part of the equation with robust programs, services, and events designed to strengthen, support, and advocate for members and the larger overall local business community.

We value both our relationship with the Chamber team and with each of you who live and work in our wonderful community! Thank you to Pat and the entire Chamber staff and board for trusting us to produce this Guide for you, and thank you as well to everyone who supported this publication! Please remember these members and advertisers as you seek out products and services in Broomfield in the year to come!

In community,

Many also volunteer at various Chamber events and therefore have high visibility in the community.

CHAMBER COMMITTEES

One of the greatest strengths of the Broomfield Chamber is its volunteers. Many who give time and talent do so on Chamber Committees. Broomfield Chamber committees help set direction, manage advocacy, assist in membership initiatives, and help manage events. Our committees include:

Advocacy Committee

The Advocacy Committee looks at key bills, policy proposals, and proposed ordinances at the state and local levels to determine what impacts they may have on the business community. They evaluate the potential effects of the legislation and make recommendations to the board if they believe the Chamber should take a position. This group also evaluates strategic policy partnerships the Chamber has such as the Northwest Chamber Alliance, Smart Commute, and Commuting Solutions to make sure the investment in time and money is of value to the membership.

Broomfield Chamber Young Professionals (BCYP) Committee

My small business lives to serve our beautiful Broomfield community through some of the most difficult times. It means so much to care for our friends and neighbors.”

The BCYP Committee is designed to help young professionals accelerate by assisting them in skill development and providing an environment where they can build relationships with peers and other business professionals. The group is open to young professionals ages 21-39 in the Broomfield and surrounding area. BCYP events are open to Chamber members and non-members alike and will have different member and nonmember rates when there is a fee.

Education Committee

The role of the Education Committee is to help in the creation of quality education content for the Chamber and its members. The committee will work to determine topics of interest to Chamber members, businesses at large, and the wider community, and will work to create Educational Series opportunities around those topics in conjunction with the Events Committee. Committee members are asked to generate ideas, seek out presenters, and assist with sponsorship generation for Education Series events.

Membership Committee

This committee is tasked with assisting in prospecting for new members and with reviewing member referral and acquisition plans and projects. This committee will also consult with the Ambassadors Committee on member retention efforts.

BROOMFIELD AREA CHAMBER GUIDE 26

Events Committee

The role of the Events Committee is to help guide the Chamber’s vision for quality activities, events, and programming content for Chamber members. The committee will generate new ideas, find sponsors for events, and assist in finding volunteers. The Concept subcommittee will meet as needed to evaluate ideas suggested by members and the community. New and existing events, activities, and programs will be evaluated on feasibility and ROI potential, and recommendations will be made to staff.

Subcommittees include:

• Concept Subcommittee

• Gala Subcommittee

• Taste of Broomfield Subcommittee

• Broomfield Days Subcommittee

Nonprofit Committee

The role of the Nonprofit Committee is to strengthen the ties of local nonprofits to the Broomfield Chamber and the community while supporting and helping them succeed in their missions. The committee endeavors to learn more about the nonprofit community, and schedules events to strengthen the relationship between nonprofits and the for-profit businesses.

We are always looking for active, committed volunteers for each of these groups. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Pat, Jordan, or Andrea at info@broomfieldchamber.com

A HISTORY OF BROOMFIELD

Farms dotted what is now the Broomfield landscape in the late 1800s, and in 1885 when Adolph Zang bought the area in the vicinity of 120th Avenue and Olde Wadsworth Boulevard, the train stop there became known as Zang’s Spur, memorializing the spur off of the main railroad line where locally grown grains would be loaded into railroad cars for delivery to the Zang Brewing Company in Denver.

Ultimately, Zang bought 4,000 acres of land in the area for his Elmwood Stock Farm where he bred Percheron horses, and tended fruit orchards.

At the turn of the century, Broomfield was a little town near 120th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. Grain elevators, a grocery, hotel, a bank, and other thriving businesses drew the farmers in the area together and they created the Crescent Grange in 1898. The organization brought area residents together for diverse activities including a petition for postal service, arrangements to buy clothing at reduced prices, insurance, programs, and social activities.

In 1904, the Colorado and Southern formed the Denver & Interurban Railway, and by 1908, the big cars were serving Broomfield on a regular basis, taking passengers to Denver, Westminster, Marshall, Boulder,

Superior, Valmont, and Louisville on its Main Line. By 1909, Broomfield had 19 passenger trains per day coming through town, prompting construction of a new depot which stood at the corner of present-day 120th Avenue and Old Wadsworth Boulevard.

In those early years, Broomfield had a garage, then two, and a filling station. They joined the Grange Hall, a hotel and general store, flour mill, cheese factory, bank, creamery, grain elevator, restaurants, a lumber yard, and a barbershop. From 1900 to 1957, about 100 people lived on farmland in the area.

In 1950, construction began on the Boulder Turnpike, a toll road, and one of the first paved roads in the area. It stretched between Wadsworth Boulevard and Boulder, with a tollbooth in Broomfield. The road's cost was paid by the tolls. Shortly after, the new Broomfield began during a growth boom when developers decided to build the state's first dream community. The first filing, the area north of 120th Avenue between Main Street and U.S. 287, was built, elementary school classes were held in "cottage schools" built by the developers of Broomfield Heights, and a shopping center sprouted where a lake had once stood in the area by U.S. 287 and Midway Blvd.

By 1961 when the city incorporated, the population had grown to 6,000. Emerald School was up and running, as was Kohl School. In 1962, a school serving junior and senior high school students opened, and a gym was added in 1964. The high school was begun in 1963, and classes started in the fall of 1964. These schools still stand, and after several remodels, they were combined into the current Broomfield High School in use today.

A HISTORY OF BROOMFIELD

Broomfield continued its growth, annexing south into Jefferson County in 1969, east of Main Street in 1969, Greenway Park in 1970, into a small portion of Adams County in 1971, and the Westlake Village subdivision in 1972. In 1974, the city passed its charter and became a home-rule city adopting the Council-Manager form of government, with an elected mayor and city council, and a professional city manager. In 1988 and 1989, the city annexed north into Weld County, thus spanning portions of four counties.

Portions of what is now Interlocken joined the city in 1983 and 1986, and Broomfield's premier employment center began. Access to the area improved with 1995 annexations along 96th Street, and the completion of the 96th Street interchange in 1996, built with public and private funds. The promise of a bright future continued with the 1996 announcement that high-tech giant SUN Microsystems was coming to Broomfield, followed by notice of Level 3's intentions in the spring of

1998. The 1998 groundbreaking of Flatiron Crossing, an upscale shopping area, assured Broomfield of a long-anticipated retail sales tax base.

In the late 1990s, Broomfield made history. To help alleviate the problems and confusion in accessing services with the City of Broomfield being the only city in the state to lie in portions of four counties, residents sought relief in a constitutional amendment creating a City and County of Broomfield. The amendment passed on November 3, 1998, giving the city a threeyear transition period in which to organize to become Colorado's 64th county. The state's newest county, the City and County of Broomfield, officially took effect on November 15, 2001.

Today Broomfield is a city and county of more than 77,000 residents with a strong sense of unity, pride, and identity. Broomfield is the 16th largest city in Colorado and one of the most desirable communities, planned with a balance of residential and commercial land use, and generous open space, parks, and natural areas.

ABOUT BROOMFIELD

Located about halfway between Denver and Boulder along U.S. 36, the Broomfield area epitomizes all that Colorado living is known for throughout the world. Robust local shopping, arts and entertainment offerings, and night-life options, combined with convenient access to Colorado’s beautiful scenery and year-round outdoor recreation, make Broomfield a uniquely vibrant place to live, work and play.

Downtown Denver is just 15 minutes away, offering Broomfield residents a wide range of worldclass entertainment, professional sports, and cultural activities. Also just 15 minutes away, Boulder is the quintessential college town, home of the University of Colorado. Boulder offers eclectic entertainment and culture, and a host of outdoor recreation possibilities in a youthful and natural setting.

An influential force in the Colorado economy, the Broomfield area is a burgeoning center of the high-tech, retail and manufacturing industries. Yet, Broomfield City and County Government makes sure the area retains its century-old feeling of rural charm. Careful planning and development allow for plenty of open space. Broomfield’s neighboring cities and towns are committed to the same developmental principles, ensuring that residents enjoy the benefits of economic opportunity without sacrificing the promise of Colorado’s nature-oriented lifestyle.

Broomfield was founded in 1877 as a small farming community known as Zang’s Spur. It was named after A.J. Zang, founder of the Zang Brewing Company, and was centered at the present day intersection of 120th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. As the 20th century began, the town’s name was changed to Broomfield to reflect the fields of “broom corn” grown in the area. In the 1950s Broomfield developed as a “bedroom” community for those employed in nearby Denver.

Broomfield was officially incorporated as a statutory city in 1961, and was billed as the state’s first planned community. In 1974, a home rule charter and the city’s first master plan were adopted. In 1995, a new master plan was created, and is often revised in order to provide ongoing and careful stewardship of the area’s growth and development.

In November 2001, Broomfield made Colorado history, becoming Colorado’s 64th county, the first to be added to the state in nearly 100 years.

Broomfield’s leaders through these early decades worked hard to guide the development of the community we enjoy today; a great place to live, work, play and raise a family.

ARTS AND CULTURE

Broomfield’s Rich Arts and Cultural Presence is a Founding Value that Persists Today

Broomfield has a rich history and tradition of community participation and enrichment that is part of its founding values. These past values are in part upheld and maintained through Broomfield’s historical organizations such as the Depot Museum and the Veterans Museum, while newer creative goals and ambitions have emerged through projects such as ARTery. Broomfield has always been a thoughtfully organized place to live, and will continue to be a desirable community due to the passion of its citizens, particularly when it comes to art and history.

Creative Broomfied, a department of the city and county, encompasses all arts and history with opportunities to cultivate, connect, and thrive throughout the community. The creative economy reflected through these programs supports a higher quality of life for all residents through crosssector collaborations amongst local businesses, government organizations, and arts, cultural, and educational entities.

Broomfield’s historical and artistic ecosystem provides enrichment and entertainment for all Broomfield residents. Read on to learn more about some of these valuable local assets.

Broomfield Depot Museum and Honey House

The Depot Museum and neighboring Crawford Honey House are located at the history campus at Zang Spur Park at 2201 W. 10th Avenue. The unique historical venue is free to the public and open on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Depot was constructed by the Colorado & Southern (C&S) Railway bridge and building crews in 1909. It was designed with a family in mind, in the hopes of attracting a live-in station agent. The Depot was closed in 1967, moved to its current location in 1976, opened as a museum in 1982, and restored in 2015. Today, visitors can take a guided tour which explains what life was like for the families who lived on the site. The Honey House was built by the Crawford family in 1905 as a place to process honey from more than 1,000 beehives. It was moved to the history campus and then renovated in 2022 to showcase the agricultural history of Broomfield and preserve the story of the Crawford family beekeepers.

Broomfield Veterans Museum

The Broomfield Veterans Museum celebrates and honors our local veterans’ heritage and exists to tell their stories. It is located at 12 Garden Center and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The museum was founded in 2002 by six Broomfield-area World War II veterans, whose legacy is now carried forward by a team of volunteers, many of

whom are veterans themselves. The museum houses nine rooms of exhibits from the Civil War up to the present day, a library with more than 2,500 history and military books, hundreds of archived videos of veteran interviews, and a multimedia room that seats up to 40 people. The museum is free and open to the public and offers docent-guided or self-guided tours, and, twice a month, a presentation called Coffee and Conversation, where visitors can hear fascinating stories from local veterans and historians.

The Brunner Farmhouse

The Brunner Farmhouse and Gardens is located at 640 Main Street on the northeast corner of Midway Boulevard and Main Street in Broomfield. It is surrounded by “the Field,” a designated open space area. The historically significant farmhouse is now operated by the Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities (BCAH) and is used as a gathering space for charitable groups, community support groups, and events sponsored by local non-profits. The majority of support for the Brunner Farmhouse and Gardens comes from volunteers and private donors. They are always looking for help to keep the property beautiful and accessible as a civic and cultural center for all to enjoy.

Broomfield Public Art Collection

The Broomfield Art in Public Places program enlivens public space, nurtures community identity, and contributes to a vibrant city through reflecting community spirit, enriching conversations, engaging community, and elevating a sense of belonging. In partnership with the Public Art Committee, Creative Broomfield continually explores opportunities to grow and maintain the Broomfield Public Art Collection. With more than 72 pieces owned by the city, the collection boasts various kinds of artwork created by talented and diverse artists and provides regular opportunities for artists to contribute to public art in Broomfield. Sculpture locations include Community Park, Broomfield County Commons, Interlocken, and Arista.

happenings nearly every day of the week in Broomfield. Whether it is local clubs, learning workshops, or musical and theatrical performances, the library and Broomfield Auditorium are where it’s at! The calendar is overflowing with events for residents of all ages and interests. Visit compass.broomfield. org/events to see a full list of offerings.

The Broomfield ARTery

The ARTery connects and transports. Through diverse projects and programs, this cross-city creative corridor celebrates the outdoors, arts and culture, imagination, and curiosity, and cultivates a shared community across Broomfield. The initiative is being developed in collaboration with multiple city departments, local organizations, and businesses. Currently, the ARTery features sidewalk murals created by local artists and Little House art exhibits. The sidewalk mural project was built in coordination with Parks, Recreation, and Senior Services, and Open Space and Trails, as well as artist selection through the Arts, History, and Cultural Council. The goal for the Little House project is to create “Little Houses,” each with a different theme and aesthetic, to create unexpected moments of joy, wonder, and curiosity. These boxes will feature rotating art and history exhibits, artifacts from Sister City Ueda, Japan, and Twin City, Broomfield, UK, and also include a Little Free Library by the Depot Museum.

PARKS, TRAILS & RECREATION

Broomfield’s Parks Recreation & Trails Programs Offer Myriad Outdoor and Fitness Opportunities

I’ve lived in Broomfield for over 20 years and have been involved in the Broomfield Chamber in some capacity for all of that time. Not only are they a terrific resource and hub for all things Broomfield, but they are great people to work with!”

From amazing state of the art recreation facilities and miles and miles of trails, to every type of class imaginable, Broomfield’s Parks, Recreation and Trails provides extensive resources to the entire community.

Broomfield offers myriad fun and safe recreational and leisure opportunities. The amazing Paul Derda Rec Center and newly renovated Broomfield Community Center are notable community venues each with extensive indoor aquatics, indoor tracks, full size sports courts, a gymnastic center, full Cardio/Strength training suites, fitness studios, meeting rooms, and Kid Zones.

The Bay Aquatic Park is designed for a full summer of family fun and allows families with kiddos under 13 to enjoy a ‘water world’ type experience without the crazy costs or crowded swim pools. It’s just the right size park to meet friends for a day in the sun where you know your kids will feel safe and most importantly try their first water slides.

One of the most unique programs the City and County of Broomfield offers is the Broomfield 100 Challenge. It is a challenge to get families out to the beautiful open spaces to enjoy the wonders of nature and learn about Broomfield’s extensive trail system.

Participants in the annual program don’t have to walk the entire path, but rather visit the various sites, learn the trail’s connections, check out the activities, and enjoy the area. Those who check in with an online passport can win a prize after completing the annual program. While enjoying all the wonderful outdoor trails Broomfield has to offer, residents can also join their iNaturalist program and share with others around town. If you have a budding scientist in your family or if you have noticed a great horned owl nest along your favorite path, you can go to inaturalist.org/projects/broomfield/ naturalist and record your observations.

offered for toddlers all the way through to silver sneakers, with a variety of water fitness classes. Youth can even compete on swim teams. There are also groups and programs for yoga, hiking fourteeners, lifting weights, or getting ready for your first 5K.

Fitness can be fun for the whole family! Broomfield offers some fun and unique experiences for families to do together or for parents to put their kids in to get through those summer slumps. Bring the kids to Midway Park on certain Sundays in July and August for the fantastic Family Field days, where families will join other families in field day style games.

Palooza! is a program for kids and preteens that give the parents a chance to workout or run errands while their kids burn off energy at the gym or in the swim pool. Different activities are planned every day and include swimming, STEM, gym time, or splash days. Drop ins are welcome based on availability. Plus there is always Child Watch at Paul Derda Rec Center which will take care of the kiddos while parents get a good workout in. See website for hours of operation.

Along with all different kinds of sports and activities for kids to join in, Youth Fitness 360 and Teen Athletic Conditioning are fitness programs designed for athletes in mind. Youth Fitness 360 will teach youth how to create a proper workout on their own and build healthy habits around the fundamentals of strength, cardio, and mobility. Teen Athletic Conditioning is a boot camp style training led by a personal trainer. Teens 14-18 will focus on areas of strength, cardio, and agility in a fun and motivating environment.

No matter your interests or ability levels, our Broomfield Parks and Rec have just the fun family adventures you are looking for. Stop by or look at the program guide online to sign up for your next summer adventure. To explore and learn more visit https://broomfield.org/ProgramGuide.

could not have been more impressed with In Memoriam. The professionalism, attention to detail and overall care and sympathy they showed us in our darkest hours was amazing. They have and still are answering all of our questions as we navigate the loss of our father. The warm boutique type atmosphere was so inviting and comforting compared to other places that tend to be stale and cold. We as a family would highly recommend In Memoriam when you are dealing with some of the hardest times of your life.”
