A scientist named Ted Maclean
Invented a time machine
Took a trip to the past
Said, “I’m sure this won’t last.”
Then vanished and has not been seen.

Now Badir from Bendigo
Instead scrubbed himself with Velcro
He’d rubbity-dub And scrubbity-scrub
’Til his mum cried, “Where’d that boy go?”

Matilda from Woolloomooloo
Liked to bathe in a product called Gloo
But she ran out of luck
One day and got stuck
On the fur-lined seat of her loo.

An Australian player of old
His name being Fred I am told
Once let go a flipper
A rippety-dipper
And found himself out! Cleanly bowled!
Saying verbs are verbs that show the manner in which something is being spoken or has been spoken. For example: giggled, replied, groaning, says, said
1 Read “Limericks” and look for clues to help you circle the saying verbs in these sentences.

b “Help, I’m stuck!” screamed Matilda.
c “Where’d that boy go?” cried Badir’s mum.
d I was told the player’s name was Fred. (Be careful!)
2 Write suitable saying verbs from the box in the sentences below.


Remember, a verb can be made up of more than one word.
