AT NIGHT: Edda Fauna in Haugesund at night.
– Jeg gir deg navnet Edda Fauna, måtte hell og lykke følge deg, … sa gudmor Unni Margrethe Nestaas før hun sendte flaska mot skutesida, etterfulgt av «Ja vi elsker», framført av Haugesund ungdomskorps. Mange hadde møtt fram på indre kai for å få med seg seremonien denne kalde og solfylte vinterdagen i januar. Til kai ruvet det 109 meter lange og 23 meter brede skipet, mens på land fulgte ordfører, folk fra rederinæringen og ikke minst mange av byens befolkning begivenheten. Det er ikke hver dag det er dåp i Sildabyen. – Praktfull, imponerende, var ord som falt, blant publikum, som hadde anledning til å komme om bord på omvisning. Byens ordfører Petter Steen likte også det han så, ikke minst at Østensjø Rederi ønsket å ta opp igjen en lang tradisjon i Haugesund; å seile med byvåpenet i baugen. - Jeg ble fryktelig glad, hyggelig å si ja til den søknaden, sa Steen, som ytret ønske om at dette igjen blir en tradisjon. - Håper ikke det blir siste gangen det blir byvåpen i baugen på så flotte skip, sa han, og overrakte administrerende direktør Johan Rokstad blomster på kommunens vegne. Kinosal og sauna Båten har åtte dekk og heis som bringer folk mellom dekkene. Vi ble geleidet rundt av Chief Engineer Leif Sindre Austnes som har deltatt på byggetilsyn av båten. Første stopp er dekk B hvor vi blant annet finner byssa, som skinner blank og fin i stål. Chief Steward Jan Fagervik har vært med å planlegge byssa og messa ut fra de erfaringene han har dratt fra sin fartstid om bord på Edda Fjord. - Jeg snakket med noen kolleger på Maritim Hotell, de fikk hakeslepp da de så byssa, sier Fagervik stolt, og legger til: - Slik har de det ikke på Maritim en gang.

-I give you the name Edda Fauna, may success and good luck follow you,… godmother Unni Margrethe Nestaas said before sending the bottle off against the hull of the vessel, followed by “Ja vi elsker” played by Haugesund youth band. Many had come to the inner pier to witness the ceremony on this cold but sunny winter day in January. Alongside loomed the 109 meter long and 23 meter wide vessel, while the mayor, people from the shipping industry and not least many of the town’s inhabitants witnessed the event. A naming ceremony is not an everyday occurrence in the Herring town. -Beautiful, impressive, were words that could be heard among the audience who got an opportunity to go onboard for a tour. The town mayor Petter Steen also liked what he saw, not least that Østensjø Rederi wanted to pick up again a long tradition in Haugesund: to sail with the town’s coat of arms on the bow. -I was extremely happy, nice to agree to that application, said Steen who expressed the wish that this become a tradition again. -I hope it is not the last time the town’s coat of arms can be seen on the bow of such great vessels, he said and presented Managing Director Johan Rokstad with flowers on behalf of the municipality. Movie room and sauna The vessel has eight decks and an elevator that transports people between the decks. We were guided around by Chief Engineer Leif Sindre Austnes who has participated in the inspection team during the construction of the vessel. First stop is deck B where among other things we find the galley which is really fine and shiny in steel. Chief Steward Jan Fagervik has taken part in the planning of the galley and mess room based on his experiences from his period onboard Edda Fjord. -I talked to some colleagues at Maritim Hotel, their jaws dropped when they saw the galley, says Fagervik with pride and adds: -They don’t even have it this nice at Maritim. The vessel also has a TV and video room plus a movie room that seats 48 which we find on the same deck. An internet café for the employees, gym, sauna and a solarium are also offers they can make use of onboard. -Here we have DeepOcean’s area, says Austnes who has brought us to deck C. He explains that they operate the ROV’s here. He points to five control chairs and nine screens. He also shows us a chair and a screen where they operate the Module Handling Tower. There are no less than three moonpools onboard. Conference room and offices are also on decks B and C. But on D-deck we find all the officers’ cabins, the ship’s office and the offices of the master and the officers.
