Hello Members,

Covid Mandates

As we move from the warm days of summer into autumn it’s looking like the Covid restrictions placed on our Club will be lifted. We will continue to monitor the health of our staff to minimise the risk of spreading the virus.

Half Yearly General Meeting

At the Half Yearly General Meeting scheduled for March 21st the members were presented updates on the activities and business of the Club. As advised in the Notice of Meeting, there was a motion to support the concept proposed by Development WA for a two-storey building that doubles the floor space we currently occupy, and to equally fund a $3.5 million contribution with the City of Joondalup, subject to final approval by the members. The motion was passed by the members in attendance.

Planning For Relocation

A successful transition will need timely decisions and commitments from the Club. The new facilities need focus on building layouts, hard standing, and future pen construction. Financial issues include; funding sources, a future lease agreement, and relocation costs. We will also need to further consult with the COJ and the State Government, engage the government liaison, community engagement, hard standing pen construction and leasing, and community engagement.

The Marina Development Sub-Committee will be recruiting members who have the interest and skills to ensure that end the Marina to ensure a successful transition. There is a great deal of interest from the members on the future facilities, and the current Sub-Committee will be expanded to encompass those who have the interest and skills. Regarding the future facilities, in our discussions with Development WA and the City of Joondalup, the Club has consistently maintained that the facilities must meet the needs of an expanding membership. This not only applies to a Clubhouse, but includes the surrounding open areas, car park and hardstand areas. We will continue to push for more space and the best outcome for the Club.

Alfresco Area

If you have been down to the Club for an afternoon libation as you supervise the construction of the breakwater wall, you would have noticed a significant improvement to the alfresco area. Green grass, beanbags, umbrellas, a playground full of kids and tables full of members have generated a lively but laid-back ambience. The Reef Bar has been a great addition, and our galley service has turned the area into a huge outdoor banquet room. Next time a staff member walks by, let them know you appreciate their efforts.

Responsible Service of Alcohol

In Western Australia, the Liquor Control Act establishes the laws related to serving alcohol. As a licensee, the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club is required to comply with this law. Compliance is also required from our General Manager, our Bar Manager, and our bar staff. We provide unequivocal support for our staff when they are obliged to address any issue with a member. Serving alcohol in a responsible manner protects the Club and helps reduce the likelihood that others will cause problems for you, your friends, or your family. We take our RSA duties seriously, as we do our commitment to provide our members a safe and enjoyable Club. Thank you for your cooperation in supporting the staff with these laws.

Best regards,

Ken Wood
