A late race charge from Mark Winterbottom saw he and Orrcon Steel Ford Performance Racing team-mate Steve Richards net fourth placing at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000. The pair had been running solidly in the top five all day - Richards doing an exceptional job for the factory Ford outfit. The alternator issue that cruelled Jamie Whincup’s day also hampered the charge of Winterbottom and Richards. With Whincup stopped on track, officials deployed the Safety Car. When Whincup was able to get restarted, Winterbottom was right behind - however was stuck behind Whincup - not wishing to pass given they were under yellow flag conditions. This effectively handed the race leaders a free pitstop and they were able to get out in front of the Winterbottom/Richards combination. A late race pass by Winterbottom to get by Jason Bright put

the #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon into fourth. A lack of rear grip in the final stint didn’t allow Winterbottom to charge forward and challenge for a podium position. The result was a spectacular one for the pair after a topsy turvey weekend. They definitely had the pace during practice - Richards topping one of the Thursday practice sessions. A freak rain shower that blanketed the venue during the top 10 shootout meant that Winterbottom was unable to set a quick time, effectively placing him 10th on the grid. In the run to the first turn, Richards dropped to 17th. Testament to the pair’s experience, they fought their way back through the field and utilising great strategy were able to walk away with such a strong result. Attention now turns to the final endurance event of 2011 -the Armor All Gold Coast 600!

FINAL CHARGE NETS FOURTH

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY... Bathurst is a cruel place on occasion and nobody felt that more than Will Davison and Luke Youlden in 2011 aboard Orrcon Steel supported #6 Trading Post FPR Falcon. The pair were on for a great result - finishing the first stint in the lead - after Davison blasted past early race leader, Greg Murphy. At the completion of the first Safety Car period as competitors were coming back for the green, Youlden was caught out by the conditions and slipped into the Murray’s Corner gravel trap. From there, both drivers were behind the eight ball and were circulating in an effort to accumulate Championship points.

THE HAND OF GOD

The omnipresent Chairman of V8 Supercars, Tony Cochrane dropped by to check in on the Orrcon Steel FPR Team... What’s Mark been doing that he looks so worried?

WAITING....WAITING...

The tension in the Orrcon Steel FPR garage prior to Mark Winterbottom’s Top 10 Shootout lap was palpable. It proved to be the highest of highs for the team and the lowest of lows. Here Winterbottom watches on with co-driver, Steve Richards (left) and race engineer, Campbell Little

BACK IN BLACK! www.orrconracing.com.au

The Orrcon Steel-backed FPR Falcons sported a tweaked livery for the L&H 500 at Phillip Island. The addition of black to the regular blue livery in deference to the recently released FPV GT Black Edition - of which there are only 125 examples available. Drivers also wore specially commissioned black race suits - which added an extra element of toughness to the team’s look!
