SUPER SANDOWN

There could not have been more contrasts in the weekend at Sandown - from mega-hot conditions on Friday - temperatures into the high 30s, to cold and pouring rain Saturday to blustery warm conditions on Sunday - the event had it all. Concerns among teams about the life of the Dunlop soft tyre in extreme heat conditions weren’t warranted, as the Melbourne race track was covered in rain for much of Saturday’s event. Despite qualifying well down the order after a gear selection problem, Mark Winterbottom charged the Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon forward in the atrocious conditions to seventh position. Post-race, Winterbottom said that he was “doing 250kmh down the straights and just couldn’t see a thing.” Will Davison in the Orrcon Steel-supported #6 Trading Post FPR Falcon had a great run going - but was pipped at the post on Saturday for a podium position on the very last corner by Todd Kelly. The pair vowed to avenge Saturday come Sunday and they

couldn’t have done it in more emphatic style - with Winterbottom sitting right on the tail of Jamie Whincup for much of the 200km long race. Many thought Whincup was lucky to escape penalty for an unsafe release in the first pitstop where he collided with the #5 Orrcon Steel machine exiting pitlane. Davison put Winterbottom under pressure in the back half of the race and in turn was resisting massive pressure himself from Craig Lowndes and Garth Tander. In the end though, the boys in Blue were able to annex the final two podium positions. The result has ensured Winterbottom is ensconsced into the top three of the Championship with just two races to go. Davison’s charge for the top five is well and truly alive as well he has effectively halved the gap to Tander. The Sydney Telstra 500 will no doubt be a hugh pressure test for both the Orrcon Men of Steel!

Orrcon Steel’s guests at the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge enjoyed a variety of activities throughout the weekend. The Orrcon Steel Corporate Suite enjoyed a prime location at turn one of the magnificent Sandown circuit.

SPECIAL GUEST VISITS ORRCON STEEL SUITE The Orrcon Steel Corporate Suite had a surprise visitor on the Friday of the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge, when the AFL Premiership Trophy enjoyed the view heading into turn one. The trophy was on hand for a promotion with Geelong Premiership Players - who took a ride with several of the Ford stars. The Ford relationship with the Geelong Football Club has stretched for an astonishing 91 years.

Sandown has hosted more Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars events than any other circuit in Australia. The track - just outside Melbourne - also hosts horse racing on a regular basis. For the Orrcon Steel-backed FPR team it is a home race, so the staff get to engage their families and friends in the race meeting and they can see where the time and effort goes to. Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison were able to repay the faith by through their exceptional results. Both are hoping the top late season form will carry through to 2012 and they can begin as strongly as they have ended.

Saturday’s weather conditions were absolutely atrocious - drivers were having difficulty seeing - it resulted in plenty of action and plenty of Safety Cars.

Sunday’s race victory gave the entire Orrcon Steel-backed Ford Performance Racing team a huge boost after an - at times - difficult season. To hunt down and pass Jamie Whincup - especially on soft tyres, where Whincup has excelled throughout the year made it all that little bit more pleasing. The well deserved celebrations continued long into the night!

SPRINTCARS BACK IN ACTION

With the V8 Supercars season drawing to a close in a couple of weeks time, the summer action for Orrcon Steel is starting to ramp up, with the Orrcon Steel-backed East Coast Pipelines Racing Sprintcar team hitting the clay ways of Australia. Defending World Series Sprintcars Champion, Robbie Farr will be back in the saddle once again for the Queensland-based team - arguably the most professional in Australia. The World Series Sprintcars Championship begins this Saturday night at Archerfield Speedway in Brisbane. However before that, Farr and the ECP team hosted fomer 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix race winner, Darryl Beattie and current Porsche Carrera Cup racer, Craig Baird for this week’s episode of RPM - due to air at 10:30pm on Wednesday night on ONE HD. The pair were taken for a ride by Farr in the team’s two seat Sprintcar - before he handed them the keys to 900 horsepower to have a blast themselves. The results are entertaining to say the least! The TV talking heads were said to be blown away by the awesome power of the ECP Racing Sprintcar!

NEXT EVENT: Sydney Telstra 500 – December 2-4 Now heading into it’s third year, the Sydney Telstra 500 is one of the true glamour events on the V8 Supercars Championship calendar. Held in the Olympic precinct around the streets of Homebush, the 500 last year captivated the Australian sporting public with the three way Title fight, which saw all three

combatants end up in the wall when a freak rain shower hit the circuit. With another Title fight in the offing, the event will rise up again. As a street circuit, it’s a tough battle for all concerned and for spectators outside racing, there is a whole range of activities they can participate in.
