FINISHING ON A HIGH!

Mark Winterbottom could not have ended 2012 on any better note for the Orrcon Steel Ford Performance Racing team, taking victory in a drama charged Sydney Telstra 500. The race for Winterbottom was to finish the Championship in the top three - holding off advances from Shane van Gisbergen and Garth Tander. He managed to comprehensively do this, as well as take the victory on Sunday. The conditions were changeable - brief, heavy showers gave way to wind and cold for Sunday’s race and a decision by the FPR team to bring Winterbottom into pitlane and change to slick tyres was decisive. Saturday’s race saw Winterbottom prove fast - and he would come home in fifth placing. He was the only FPR car not to suffer from damaged steering. The team went to the trouble of manufacturing new parts and flying them in from Melbourne overnight to be fitted ahead of Sunday. Saturday’s result kept Winterbottom in front of van

Gisbergen for the final podium placing in the Championship - Sunday’s hard fought victory sealed it. The other Orrcon Steel-backed FPR machine - that of Will Davison had a less successful weekend. Davison secured pole position on both days and led the early part of both races. Saturday, he suffered damaged steering after clipping curbs early in the race. The steering failed 11 laps in and he met the Sydney concrete. Sunday, electing to stay on the wet tyres, he dropped through the pack as strategies shook out. Toward the end of the race, he was on a charge, setting fastest laps consistently and carving his way towards the podium. A move on Shane van Gisbergen ended with Davison being caught out by marbles and collecting the wall with a handful of laps remaining. Aside from Winterbottom winning the race and collecting third in the Championship, FPR finished second in the team’s standings and now head into the Christmas break full of confidence ahead of 2012 starting in March in Adelaide.

V8 SUPERCARS HONOURS ORRCON STEEL’S 10 YEARS As part of the pre-race festivities at the Sydney Telstra 500, V8 Supercars Chairman, Tony Cochrane took time out to make a special presentation to Orrcon Steel - in honour of the company’s 10 consecutive years of being a sponsor in the Championship. Cochrane met with David Spence (Hills Holdings) and Leon Andrewartha - Managing Director, Orrcon Steel at the front of the grid to present a special trophy. “Orrcon Steel has been one of our (V8 Supercars) most loyal and valuable sponsors over the last 10 years,” Cochrane said. “The company has gone from being an unknown in the Australian market to a leader in it’s field utilising it’s V8 Supercars program as the foundation.” Following on from the presentation, the huge contingent of Orrcon Steel guests that were situated on the back straight were delighted when Winterbottom continued the celebrations through his spectacular race victory. “This fantastic result couldn’t have rounded out our 10th year in the sport any better, said Andrewartha. “When we first entered V8 Supercars, the board wanted a fast-paced technology driven environment to show off it’s brand. V8 Supercars has allowed Orrcon Steel to grow the company and provide unique experiences for staff and customers alike.”

THE FUTURE IS NOW

One of many major announcements during the Sydney Telstra 500 event was the unveiling of the Car of the Future V8 Supercar. From 2013, the platform that V8 Supercars operates on will change appreciably. The Car of the Future - which contains Orrcon Steel - will provide a far more nimble car for competitors, bigger wheels and vast improvements in the area of safety. Ford and Holden models were unveiled at Homebush, however the platform has been designed such that a new manufacturer can come into the sport partnered with a team. There will be a ‘generic’ V8 engine that manufacturers without a V8 platform can access to bolt into their vehicles. Aesthetically, the Car of the Future does not provide too many cues as to the difference between the current car and the 2013 standard - aside from larger wheels. Technologically, the Car of the Future updates to current technology, including an independent rear suspension. The fuel tank has been moved further toward the centre of the car in an effort to avoid a Karl Reindler/Perth style incident and side impact intrusion has been beefed up. The car will improve the spectacle of V8 Supercars by making them more nimble and will adapt for drivers to ‘have a go’, race door handle to door handle and produce more entertaining racing. Orrcon Steel provided much of the steel for the prototype chassis to be constructed and will continue to support the project until the final specification vehicle has been decided. V8 Supercars is poised to go into a whole new world come 2013 once the Car of the Future is implemented! Will Davison proved to be the man to beat in qualifying in Sydney - walking away with $5,000 of Armor All cash. Whilst he didn’t finish either race, he can take solace from the fact he ended the year as arguably the fastest driver. Davison has been a strong addition to the Orrcon Steel-backed FPR team in 2011 and come 2012 - with Mark Winterbottom - could rightly be considered a Championship contender. We’ve seen a great amount of growth in several areas and will continue to strive to deliver the Orrcon Steel Racing message in ever more creative ways, which will benefit us all. Ending the season on such a high has given Ford Performance Racing, Mark Winterbottom and the entire team a real impetus heading into the Christmas break. Your support has been Orr’some!
