ORO VALLEY WATER UTILITY NEWSLETTER FALL 2025

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Oro Valley Water Utility’s commitment to the successful management and operation of the community’s municipal water system. Since the establishment of the Utility in 1996, the number of water system connections have grown from 9,800 services to over 21,000 services, the population has doubled, and our available water resources have expanded from just one source of supply to three.

The Utility’s success is not by accident, but rather is the result of the organization’s commitment to the responsible stewardship of the community’s municipal water system assets. We do this by remaining fiscally conservative, making wise capital infrastructure investments, conserving and storing water resources, as well as the implementation of technology to improve the Utility’s operational efficiency. Because of this, our customers can enjoy a safe and reliable water supply, while paying the lowest rate for water compared to other similarly sized water service providers in Southern Arizona.

The Utility’s success would not be possible without the community’s support. Every aspect of the Utility’s operation is funded solely by water rates and fees that customers pay, not sales or property taxes. Annually, the Utility performs a water rates analysis to ensure sufficient revenues are generated to recover the cost of service. This analysis takes into consideration all costs associated with successfully operating Oro Valley’s municipal water system. Costs include outstanding debt, water resources, operations and maintenance, personnel, capital improvement projects and the cost of electric power.

In closing, with continued planning, responsible rate setting, good stewardship of our assets and resources, and support from Town leadership and the community, you can expect the continued long-term delivery of a safe and reliable water supply at the lowest cost possible.

Looking forward,

Peter Abraham

SMART WATER USE, A SEASONAL APPROACH

Conserving water is more important now than ever. At Oro Valley Water Utility, we’re committed to sustainable water use — and we invite you to join us in preserving this precious resource with smart, seasonal conservation habits. Fall is a great time to reassess your water habits, especially as cooler temperatures and shorter days create opportunities to conserve water.

Here are some timely tips to help you save water (and money!) this season:

FALL: PREPARE FOR THE OFF-SEASON

Cut Back Watering: As temperatures cool, plants require less water. Gradually reduce irrigation and turn off systems on rainy days. Overwatering is common in fall – help your landscape and the aquifer by cutting back on watering frequency and duration. Search the internet for more helpful tips.

Know Your Plants: Native and desert-adapted plants thrive with minimal water. Fall is a great time to plant, giving roots time to establish before summer. Consult your local garden center or landscape professional for recommendations.

Check for Leaks: Fall is a great time for a home water audit. Leaky faucets, toilets, and irrigation lines can waste thousands of gallons a year. Contact the Oro Valley Water Utility at (520) 229-5000, or email us at waterconservation@orovalleyaz.gov for assistance with a home water audit.

Pool Cover Up: If you have a pool, using a pool cover can reduce evaporation substantially. Less evaporation means less water refilling – and savings for you. Contact your pool professional for more information.

• Upgrade Fixtures: Consider WaterSense-labeled showerheads and faucets, dual-flush toilets and low-flow showerheads. Contact your local home improvement center or plumbing professional for recommendations on water saving appliances and fixtures.

• Full Loads Only: Run dishwashers and laundry machines only when full.

The WaterSmart tool allows you to monitor your water use online and provides high water use notifications and leak alerts. Visit WaterSmart at orovalley.watersmart.com
