WHY JEVS HUMAN SERVICES? We are living in challenging times. The COVID-19 crisis has changed the world around us, and widespread job loss has had a profound effect on our community.

For many of the people we serve, the pandemic has punctured an already leaking boat, leaving them struggling to stay above water. But at JEVS, responding to a crisis is in our DNA. We’re here to help people get back to work, connect to new opportunities, and build fulfilling lives.

JEVS was founded almost 80 years ago to rescue refugees fleeing from Nazi Germany, helping individuals restart their lives and build a new future. Once again, JEVS is here to support individuals, their families, and our community. Just as JEVS was there 80 years ago to help Jewish refugees escaping anti-Semitism, JEVS is here now helping those whose opportunities have been impacted by the systemic racism our nation has only begun to acknowledge.

At JEVS, we believe that every person deserves the opportunity to live a self-determined, connected, and hopeful life. Through the pandemic, we have pivoted to deliver our services in new and innovative ways, and we are continuing to learn and adapt to meet our participants’ needs. JEVS essential staff and services have been called into action like never before, and we are ready, willing, and able to be the organization our community needs now and in the months and years to come.

We take a whole-person approach to our work, because we know that individuals and families thrive when they can build strength and stability across multiple areas of their life at once.

We meet our participants wherever they are and provide them with the tools and supports they need to reach their goals, facilitating access to opportunities for education, employment, health, well-being, and lasting connection.

AREA OF IMPACT: Economic Stability Participants are connected to meaningful, living-wage employment, along a career path of their choosing, with a goal of building lasting financial stability.

Ranked first among the largest U.S. cities in the percentage of residents living in deep poverty, Philadelphia has a poverty rate of 24.5 percent.

This means that living-wage employment is out of reach for 1 in 4 of our neighbors. A living-wage job is an important first step. Better-paying work and long-term financial stability often require post-secondary credentials that remain out of reach for many in our community.

Deciding to return to school after twenty years was no small decision INDIVIDUALS for Nadja Connor. After being passed PLACED IN JOBS over for promotions at her employer, she realized that a college degree was standing between her and positions that offered the financial stability she wanted for herself and her family.

Through seed funding provided by TD Bank, we were able to offer the college access solution that put her on a path to her goals. Our program paired her with a success coach to help her navigate her studies, stay on track and earn the credential that will make a difference in her earning potential. Nadja is scheduled to graduate with an associate degree in general studies, with a concentration in business by 2022. She has already received a work promotion since starting the JEVS program and expects another upon her completion of the program.

AREA OF IMPACT: Education & Skills Participants have access to opportunities to gain skills and earn industry-recognized credentials that will help them advance along a career path.

During the first four months of the COVID crisis, nearly 30% of the American workforce filed for unemployment. More than 40% of that job loss has been concentrated among workers earning less than $40,000 a year. Unfortunately, the economic impact of the crisis has had a disproportionate impact on communities of color and those without a high school diploma.

At our Orleans Technical College and in other programs across JEVS, students are connected to educational opportunities that will put them ahead.

After high school, Makai Chetram gave college a try. Pursuing an accounting degree seemed like the right next step for this ambitious young man. But a year into his studies, he was restless and unsure he was cut out for “a job behind a desk.” Taking advice from a mentor, he decided to pursue a trade. Fast forward 18 months later, he landed a great job as an HVAC technician and already received one promotion.

Participants are connected to a robust support network within communities of their choosing.

For people experiencing job loss or those left without meaningful community activities, pandemic-related closedowns have been especially challenging. Social isolation, loss of connections, and loneliness set in quickly and hit those we serve hard. Virtual services and safe outdoor outings replaced in-person workshops, social gatherings and volunteer activities.

We R Here 4 U continued to be an important message to Independence Network members, young adults with disabilities living independently with supports, when in-person activities were halted in March.

Staff did much more than traditional career counseling to maintain connections with clients, including watching Jeopardy together.

Finding safe ways to resume community integration services became a priority for individuals, their families and staff.

Participants are living safely and are able to meet their health goals.

The challenge of supporting more than 7,000 individuals with disabilities and those who are aging in safe, community-based settings or in their own homes rests on the shoulders of our direct service professionals. More than 300 of these remarkable individuals staff our community homes, helping to ensure that residents thrive in these living arrangements.

AREA OF IMPACT: Mental Health & Well-Being Participants have the opportunity to live a life of meaning and purpose.

Emotional health, the ability to manage feelings through challenge and change, and its connection to overall well-being came into sharp focus this year. We recognized a need to expand these types of supports beyond our clinical behavioral health programs as clients in programs across the agency were challenged by the pandemic. This meant equipping our client-facing staff across our programs with the tools to help those we serve better manage their emotional health, including increasing referrals for clinical mental health services.

Often the most valuable support we can offer is our own experience. This is certainly true for Aja Alston, a Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) at JEVS. During her own hospitalization several years ago, she was fortunate to meet Mr. Dean. He seemed to understand her struggles in a way the rest of the hospital staff could not – he’d “been there.” Now Aja is paying it forward, working with a group of 20 clients as a CPS on a variety of issues including education and trauma-informed wellness.
