(1-1.5 hours) RICE NORTHWEST MUSEUM OF ROCKS & MINERALS

OREGON COAST

At the fork in the highway, as you travel on Highway 6, you enter the Trees to Sea Scenic Byway (tualatinvalley.org/treesto-sea-scenic-byway), a state-designated scenic drive to the Oregon Coast. Visit Apolloni Vineyards (14135 NW Timmerman Rd., Forest Grove; 503359-3606; apolloni.com; open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Apolloni specializes in Italian-style wines, and produces a variety of red and white wines, including Pinot Noir. For a treat, sample the Pinot Gris and the Pinot Grigio side-by-side; same grape, different tastes. (1-1.5 hours) Settle in for the nearly one-hour long drive to the city of Tillamook, as you travel through the Tillamook State Forest and over the Oregon Coast Range. Arrive at the famed Tillamook Creamery (4165 N. Hwy 101, Tillamook; 503-815-1300; tillamook.com), one of the state’s most popular tourist attractions. Cape Meares features tours of an 1890s lighthouse, an interpretive kiosk and panels at key viewpoints, and hiking trails and a mile-long walking trail winding through old-growth spruce trees. Don’t miss the unique "Octopus Tree." This spot is ideal for viewing whale migrations in winter and spring, and seals and sea lions in the summer.
