WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL LAURA HASKINS

Small but mighty; that well-known phrase captures the spirit of the 2021-2022 Annual Fund! As one of the smallest independent schools in Virginia, we prove time and time again that we can accomplish great things in our little community. Through incredible board leadership and the generous financial support of you, our donors, we were able to surpass our Annual Fund goal!

Astheworldbecomesmorecomplex, sodothechallengesforadolescentgirls.YoursupportmakesitpossibleforOHSto provide new, mission-aligned opportunities for our girls. We introduced school counseling, yoga and mindfulness, and coding programs that equipped students with tools and skills to thrive in today’s world. These programs reflect a key value of our mission – to stay responsive to the needs of the girls in our care. Orchard House continues to deliver a programthatnotonlymeetsourstudents'needsbuthelpsthemdiscovertheopportunitieschallengespresent.

It is a privilege and joy to be on this journey with each of you as we support, nurture, and challenge adolescent girls duringoneofthemostpivotaltimesoftheirlives.

Thankyou,

HELLO FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR

SHARON MOON

On behalf of the Orchard House School Board of Trustees, I want to express my profound gratitude to our entire OHS community for the wonderful 2021-2022 year. The year was not without some lingering uncertainty that carried over from the period of pandemic, but our school hit the ground running with renewed vigor and has not slowed down since!

The OHS Board made great strides in support of the school in 2021-2022. In partnership with Laura Haskins and her entire administrative team, the Board approved the engagement of a consultant to lead the strategic planning efforts, participated in the year-long strategic planning process, and approved the final strategic plan, found here, in June. Strong board leadership brought structure and discipline to a highly successful annual fund year, as reflected here in the Annual Report. The OHS Board has traditionally acted as a “working” Board, and I am so proud of each and every Board member for their generous contributions in time, talent, and treasure in support of the school’s mission.

And speaking of the OHS mission, I want to express sincere thanks to the faculty and staff who work tirelessly and joyfully every day to educate and inspire middle school girls in a responsive, academically engaging community that fosters each girl's intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, emotional integrity, and physical well-being. One theme that resonated throughout our strategic planning process was the strength of and admiration for our faculty and staff. Not at all a surprise to me or my alumnae daughters!

To our inspiring OHS students, I want to thank you for showing all of us what true community looks like. It is such a joy to visit the school to see the building filled with your collective laughter, song, learning, and collaboration.

Finally, to our families, alumnae, and the broader OHS community, thank you for your steadfast support of OHS. Your continued connection to OHS, in so many ways big and small, is appreciated beyond measure. You are wonderful advocates for OHS; we hope you will keep spreading the word!

HEAVY FOOTFALLS, LIGHT SPIRITS

When the Skeeter family first came to tour Orchard House School in search of a school for their daughter Bella, their first impression was of the lightness of the building. Orchard House alumna parent and current board member Lori Skeeter sums up how they experienced this light: “For it to be such an imposing structure on quite the imposing avenue, the inside felt very light. Physical light coming in from the windows, the bright colors, the smiles on the faces as the girls were changing classes. Even the noises over your head in the stairwells heavy footfalls but light spirits!"

Long before joining the Orchard House family, the Skeeters have been active members in school communities, including their help establishing the nonprofit Parent Association Committee to support the work of Bella’s elementary school. When it came time to choose a middle school, Lori says, “We always knew the time would come when she’d transition out of that environment, and we didn’t want the first time she was in a traditional classroom setting to be in high school. Orchard House just felt like it was absolutely the right fit. We don’t just care about test scores, we care about how you are feeling, interacting, relating all of these things matter. Even the math program you can still be successful even if math is not your first language.”

As a member of OHS Class of 2020, Bella had a transition to a public high school that was unique to her grade due to the pandemic. “OHS gave her the foundation that you grow where you ’ re planted, and in this case you ’ re planted in my house!” When the Skeeters were looking at options for high school, Bella indicated that she was ready for a larger environment, and while spending freshman year learning virtually wasn’t what she’d initially had in mind, she’s since been able to spread her wings properly. Now in her junior year at Richmond Community High School, Bella is building upon the foundation set by OHS. Lori reports that one of Bella’s current teachers expressed a desire to know more about OHS because of her sense of self. “He said, ‘All of the OHS students, I see something different in them.’ It was great to hear him say that not just my daughter, but the other students who are OHS alums, seem to have a way of coping with the world and pressures and academics that is discernibly different.”

It’s this kind of difference that motivates Lori to serve in support of schools. “I probably have more time and talent than I have treasure, so I’m always willing to give what I can that’s going to make the school better. So when Orchard House approached me wanting to have the voice of a current parent, I thought that was important. Also as a Black family looking for diversity of perspective and voices in a small school, having a seat at the table as a minority is always important.” Lori is proud of the work Orchard House and the OHS Board have done in the last few years to continue what she calls “merging the reality of life with our education.” This merging is all about keeping up with the actual landscape of what adolescent girls are processing inside and outside of the classroom. This includes the addition of time for students to spend with counselors in a curriculum dedicated to social-emotional development and mental health, but it

also includes the expansion of the diversity, equity, and inclusion curriculum and the addition of Orchard House’s Director of Diversity and Assistant Head of School LaMecca Coates. “If we didn’t know we needed it at first if it was something that was a luxury back in the day it certainly became a necessity in the past 2 or 3 years. ”

To Lori, this expansion of DEI work and the emphasis on mental health and self-care are just part of what excites her about the OHS Strategic Plan, which the Board passed in June 2022. She is particularly concerned with the commitment to raising the profile of the school. “I definitely feel like OHS is one of those best-kept secrets that we would like not to be a secret anymore. ” And to Lori, raising the profile calls for an expansion of the promotion of OHS to all of the city and surrounding counties and especially to families who may not automatically assume that an Orchard House education is within reach. “We want to be accessible, we want people to be aware that we can find a home here and continue down that path. I am such a fan and proponent of what I saw it do for Bella that I absolutely want everyone to know and have an opportunity to join.”

OURMISSION

Orchard House School educates and inspires middle school girls in a responsive, academically engaging community that fosters each girl's intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, emotional integrity, and physical well-being.

OHS wants to make our expertise in educating middle school girls more visible and appreciated in the City of Richmond and surrounding areas from which we can and should be drawing students. The results of over seventy surveys and in-person interviews conducted during the strategic planning process confirm that Orchard House School is, in the words of one survey respondent, “ one of Richmond’s hidden treasures.” OHS intends to change the operative word “hidden” to “well-recognized.” The reasoning is fairly straightforward With increased familiarity, OHS better positions ourselves in the field of education, widens applicant pools for students and faculty, and attracts the attention of financial donors.

BOLSTERING DIVERSITY, EQUITY,AND INCLUSION

RAISING OURPROFILE #4

#3CARINGFOR OURSELVES SECURING OURFUTURE

Since the early years of OHS, the number of students reporting mental health issues has increased significantly. Emotionally safe and supportive classrooms have long been a mainstay of the school, but OHS also recognizes the need to amplify our focus on healing and well-being. This includes providing the tools for OHS students, faculty, and staff to keep themselves and each other focused on mental health.

As an urban school, OHS is committed to creating and sustaining a learning environment that reflects the population of the City of Richmond and surrounding areas. Although OHS has always been committed to and valued diversity and inclusion, OHS will reinvigorate our efforts to reach and attract students, faculty and staff from underrepresented groups in the City of Richmond and the greater community. OHS wants to ensure that everyone in the school community feels welcomed, valued, and respected

The strategic planning process elicited a consistent theme about Orchard House School’s faculty –that is – they are universally beloved and the faculty is a substantial reason that students enroll and stay in the school. As OHS approaches our 25th anniversary year, the school is at a pivotal moment in its history. A cohort of faculty and staff will retire over the next few years, fundraising and development efforts are positioned to mature, and longterm plans for building and facilities stewardship are emerging. Developing comprehensive courses of action for all of these areas will ensure continuity in school culture and mission, sound decision making, and a thoughtful approach to new opportunities.
