WELCOME FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL Every year, the Annual Report reflects the many ways our community gives to support the students and mission of Orchard House School. In the 2020-2021 academic year, as we faced the unprecedented challenge of offering in-person and virtual learning during a pandemic, I saw our CORE – Connections, Openness, Resilience, Engagement – values in action.
LAURA HASKINS
We learned how to connect virtually and in person with one another, we were open to new ideas and ways of presenting curriculum and, boy, did we have plenty of opportunities to practice resilience! We kept a strong level of engagement with our community and, in turn, the community continued to be a strong support for Orchard House School. At the end of the year, we welcomed back an inperson graduation for 8th graders and their families. Parents smiled (sometimes through tears) and remarked on how much they had missed this home away from home. After graduation, faculty and staff sent students and families off by way of a dance line complemented with upbeat music and colorful streamers. After a year of tremendous challenges, we were happy to return to a wellloved tradition and an opportunity to be together, complete with the kind of small but special added touch we are known for in honoring and celebrating our students. As we present this year’s Annual Report, we continue to honor and celebrate not just our students, but also our generous donors who make an Orchard House education possible. Thank you, Laura Haskins

HELLO FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR On behalf of the entire Orchard House Board, I want to thank you. During a year cloaked in uncertainty, the OHS community came together, provided unending support, and courageously faced challenges unlike any the school had seen before.
RON WOLFE
Thank you to the OHS faculty and staff, who, through their leadership, redesigned the educational experience, found ways to make remote learning compelling and effective, and adjusted as the situation continuously changed. Thank you to the OHS students, who inspired us all with their strength as the pandemic limited their ability to experience many of the school traditions, in-person learning, and the inherent sense of community found in our building on Allen Avenue. Thank you to the OHS families, whose dedication, engagement, compassion, and grace helped knit our broader community together in support of one another. The physical distancing necessary to mitigate the virus did not deter us from finding ways to maintain our social connection and emotional health. This past year reminds us all that resilience and adaptation to our changing world can be our superpowers. We all must strive to find the most effective ways to prepare our students as the world continues to evolve around us in the future. I am profoundly grateful to all of you who make Orchard House an extraordinary learning community.
A FAMILY TRADITION The Belleman family is a service powerhouse here at Orchard House School. Currently, alumna Kate Belleman (‘03) serves on the Board of Trustees, while Scott Belleman is volunteering with our Development Committee. Nancy Belleman helped see Orchard House through its two most monumental changes—the migration of the school from its old location to our current building on North Allen and the transition of leadership from founding Head of School Nancy Davies to current Head of School Laura Haskins. The triad of giving—time, talent, and treasure—is truly a family tradition for the Bellemans, and each member of the family brings their own unique perspective to what’s important when they’re deciding how they give. For Kate, philanthropy is a value passed down from her parents. “I grew up with the notion that you should be giving back to the community that served you in whatever way that means.” Kate says that tapping into what OHS did for her—from a middle schooler uncomfortable in her own skin to a confident high schooler—drives her to do what she can to pass along the opportunity for that transformation. “Watching families join and watching their daughters blossom is such a joy. To be able to think that the money we raise helps kids get an experience like that is so incredibly heartwarming.” Scott Belleman is especially interested in the way Orchard House School has maintained the intimate and personal nature of the school, even through the move from a small rented space to the much larger purchased building. “You had to fall in love with that school,” Scott says about the startup school, whose first class graduated in 1998. “It just seemed so personal.” This intimacy of a small organization that maintains its astuteness in the use of its resources even after moving beyond the startup phase is a big factor. He points to the example of the Building With a Purpose capital campaign, which allowed the school to take good care of the building with some not-so-flashy repairs to mortar and windows, which Scott views as an indicator of the school’s commitment to careful investment of its funds. “This is not the biggest thing we support, but it's one of them, and it's because this place is special. It's not a routine school and that's really the reason I got involved again.”
Nancy Belleman feels similarly connected to Orchard House’s impact on her daughter, the school’s story, and its continued stewardship of funds and resources. “Our daughter had a great experience here, and so that sure helps things to bubble in your head, but I think most importantly, Orchard House to me is kind of like the little engine that could, and seeing this very small but very mighty school start from [a] living room to where it is now and to be financially healthy is no small feat.” Service has also been a considerable part of Nancy’s gift to Orchard House, and her time spent on the search committees for both a building and a Head of School has made a huge impact on the school’s sustained future. As for the decision on how to give financially, Nancy and Scott have a system whereby they decide on a percentage of income to give each year to various organizations, distributing funds according to their giving priorities and focusing on smaller organizations where their gifts can make a serious impact. Kate extends this gift to her time and talents as a board member: “I like the fact that I can give to OHS more than just money. In making these big decisions, we’re not running the day-to-day operations of the school, but helping to make these big picture decisions as part of the board has been a real joy for me.” For the Bellemans, it comes down to three Ps: people, place, and protection. An Orchard House education is indeed personal, and relationships between students and teachers imbue the physical location with a feeling that can’t be easily replicated. But more than that, that feeling has been created, maintained, and protected so it will last well into the future through careful allocation of school resources. Nancy ties it all together, explaining why a middle school is still high on their list: “Each of the challenges that the school has had, it has risen to and exceeded expectations, so as a donor, it just makes you feel like you’ve invested wisely. That’s why even though it’s just a middle school, and Kate is [an adult] and has a baby, it still is important to us because you want future generations to have the benefit of something like that. And because it’s so small, it needs people who have been involved from the get-go.”
Orchard House to me is kind of like the little engine that could, and seeing this very small but very mighty school start from [a] living room to where it is now and to be financially healthy is no small feat.
