Welcome to Orcas Island … truly the “Gem of the San Juan Islands.”

Located between the Washington mainland and Vancouver Island, Orcas is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the San Juan Islands.

Rural in nature, the island features a variety of lodging possibilities, from charming Bed & Breakfasts to Inns & Resorts. Shopping and activities on Orcas are nearly endless.Whether you’re looking for art galleries featuring Northwest artists or a hike in the 5200-acre Moran State Park, Orcas provides you with a variety of yearround activities.

ORCAS ISLAND

The island – noted by locals as looking like an upside-down horseshoe – is geographically divided into several charming ‘hamlets.’

Orcas Village is the arrival point for the Washington State ferry.

Here you’ll find gift shops, a grocery store, a post office, lodging, restaurants and outdoor activities.

West Sound features a marina, lodging possibilities, a restaurant, and a community center.

Deer Harbor is the farthest point West on Orcas, and offers full marina services, various lodging choices, restaurants, shops and water activities.

Eastsound is the town center on Orcas, and extends beyond the village core. To the Southwest is Crow Valley, home to art studios, lodging, and the golf course. West Beach is due west from Eastsound and offers

shops, lodging, and YMCA Camp Orkila. Eastsound proper is largely a walking village, offering shops of all kinds, many accommodation choices, a variety of restaurants, and many family & visitor activities. Located just to the South and East of Eastsound is Rosario,where you’ll find many lodging choices, as well as the famed resort of the same name, a restaurant, a general store, a marina, and lots of activities, including the nearby Moran State Park.

Olga & Doe Bay are small in size, but offer visitors many choices, including restaurants, lodging, arts & crafts galleries, and plenty of activities.

Getting to Orcas Island

By Car & Ferry

A leisurely ferry ride is the perfect transition to take you from the busy freeways of the mainland to the quiet country roads of the islands. (The ticket you purchase is for a round trip).

By Plane

Catch a small plane at various Northwest locations, including Seattle’s SeaTac airport, Boeing Field, Lake Union, or Lake Washington, and be on Orcas Island in approximately 45 to 60 minutes. Regular and charter flights are also available from other regional airports. Take a shuttle bus from SeaTac right to the Anacortes ferry landing.

By Boat

There are several docking options for boaters, from day moorage to marinas.

Some seasonal favorites are Rosario, West Sound, Deer Harbor, Brandt’s Landing, Olga & Eastsound.

Important: If you are traveling by Washington State Ferry, it is recommended you have your vehicle in the ferry line in Anacortes one-half to one hour before sailing during fall, winter and spring. One and a half to two hours ahead during summer and holiday weekends may be necessary to assure you get on board for your preferred sailing time.

See current sailing schedule at: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries To Washington State Ferry from Interstate 5: Take exit #230, drive west on Hwy. 20 to Anacortes (30 minutes). Turn right on Commercial Ave. and drive north, turn left at the light on 12th St. The ferry terminal is two miles ahead.

BIKING ON ORCAS ISLAND

Orcas Island roads, with steep hills, blind curves, and sometimes little or no shoulder, are challenging for bike riders at every level of ability.

Please use extreme caution when biking Orcas Island roadways.

OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SIMPLE GUIDELINES: u After leaving the ferry, pull off the roadway until all ferry traffic has passed. u Travel single file in small groups of 3 or 4, widely spaced apart. u Stop only on straightaways and move completely off the road.

u Use bicycle turnouts whenever possible.

Washington State’s Newest Scenic Byway Begin by voyaging across the Salish Sea to the San Juan Islands, a destination like no other, known for its majestic beauty, precious natural resources, and abundant recreational opportunities.

Accessible only by ferry, boat, or plane, the marine highway passage across the Salish Sea is part of the extraordinary experience. But the true experience of the San Juan Islands goes beyond these qualities to the unique cultural characteristics that have shaped island life for generations and continue to shape it to this day.

The San Juan Islands Scenic Byway is divided into three distinct segments: the marine highway route between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands often traveled by way of a Washington State Ferry but also by private boat or by air; the land routes around San Juan Island; and the land routes around Orcas Island.

On Orcas Island, Orcas Village greets you upon your arrival at the ferry landing which dates back to 1889. Lodging, dining, shops, groceries and public restrooms can be found here. Follow Orcas Road to Deer Harbor Road where you will turn left and travel 10 minutes to the hamlet of Deer Harbor which offers lodging, dining, sea kayaking, whale watching & fishing charters. From Deer Harbor, head back to Orcas Road and enjoy the scenery on your 15-minute drive to the main village of Eastsound.

Eastsound is comprised of many shops, galleries, restaurants, groceries, services, historical museum, seasonal Farmers’ Market, the Orcas Center Performing Arts Center, as well as the many holiday parades that take place on North Beach Road!

Head east out of Eastsound for another 10 minutes to Moran State Park. Enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking, swimming, camping and the spectacular view from the top of Mt. Constitution.

Continue on to the hamlet of Olga and peruse the local artists’ gallery and enjoy the local cuisine. Then head southeast to Doe Bay to relax, rejuvenate and re-discover yourself. Retrace your route back to Orcas Village and the ferry terminal. You can head back to Anacortes, visit San Juan Island’s Byway, or stay and play longer on Orcas Island!

Bold-face restaurateurs vie with unspoiled nature. Nature wins.

The big draw for the San Juan Islands this year just might be its dining scene. But the eternal lure of the San Juans — what brings chefs out as well as tourists — are the landscapes. Pastoral hills give way to broody forests and scrappy escarpments that overlook fjordlike inlets.

Thanks to an active land preservation effort by organizations like the San Juan County Land Bank, each year new areas are protected from logging or unruly development, and in turn provide fresh terrain for the public to explore.

Orcas Island…has the most diverse geography and range of activities, from whale watching to hiking to golfing.

Villages and hamlets dot the island, along with art and pottery galleries, restaurants and eclectic inns, B&B’s and resorts. The largest town, Eastsound, is the cultural hub of the island, with a performing arts center, first-run movie theater, a children’s discovery center, and a skate park. With only about 5,000 year-round residents, the island has a decidedly mellow, neighborly vibe. It’s not uncommon to see hitchhikers along the winding roads, as well as plenty of bikers.

Travel Orcas Island is a Secret Island. Tucked away in the northwest corner of the lower 48 states, Orcas Island is green, serene and blessedly quiet. There’s nary a stoplight to be found here, and the island is known for its stunning natural beauty and its dedication to the arts.

While Orcas Island wasn’t actually named for the black-and-white killer whales that like to hang out nearby, sightings are common — the orcas have been known to swim up close even to boats keeping their distance.

The long summer weekend was invented in Washington’s San Juan Islands, or should have been. Summer stretches languorously here, with 16 hours of daylight—enough time to savor the islands’ patented pleasures: orcas and eagles, kayaking and hiking, and a food scene that shows the influence of a burgeoning slow-food movement.

Historic Places on Orcas Island Orcas Island has a unique history, and a glimpse at that history can be found in its historic landmarks. The following is a sampling of those buildings. Please respect the buildings, grounds, and businesses that may be in these historic treasures.

Orcas Hotel (Orcas Village) Victorian structure built by William Sutherland, a Canadian entrepreneur, in 1904.

National Register of Historic Places.

Deer Harbor Community Club (Deer Harbor) Built as the Deer Harbor School in 1905, it is now a community gathering spot.

Crow Valley School Museum (near Eastsound) Built in 1888, and serving as the Crow Valley School until 1918, it now houses photos and artifacts.

Crow Valley Pottery (near Eastsound) The original Still House was built in 1866, and this two-room cabin now serves as a pottery shop.

Outlook Inn (Eastsound) Previously housing a store, post office and barber shop, this 1888 structure took its present name in 1942.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Eastsound)

Modeled after an English country church, this 1886 building was designed by Rev. Sidney Gray, the first rector.

Observation Tower on Mt. Constitution (Moran State Park) Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (WPA) in 1936, of sandstone hauled from nearby Sucia Island, it is patterned after 12th Century watchtowers of southeastern Europe.

Artworks Building in Olga (Olga) Built in 1936 as a packing plant on land owned by strawberry growers, it is undergoing repair following a fire in 2013. To re-open in late 2014.

Doe Bay Post Office (Doe Bay) Now part of an island resort, this 1908 building was part of a complete village port used for freight and passengers.

Orcas Island — The Mecca of Kayaking

by Jeff Zbornik and Tom Carter Orcas Island is renowned as a destination – a ‘mecca’ – for kayakers.

The natural beauty of the environment, abundant wildlife, and scattered state park island campsites provide a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the islands intimately from a kayak. The islands are also known for their sometimes challenging conditions, so it is important to consider your ability and options when planning your kayak journey in the San Juans.

There are several options for kayaking on Orcas Island, and it is important to consider these realistically. We have outfitters offering guided tours, and these are recommended for most visitors. Kayakers with training and practice in rescue techniques and paddling in currents may choose to bring their own kayaks. Instruction for all levels of kayakers is also available from several outfitters. If you plan on kayaking as a continuing sport, this is a great place to get the proper skills training. During part of the year, recreational kayaks are even available for rent on Moran State Park’s Cascade Lake.

As beautiful as the surrounding sea is, paddlers need to be aware of strong currents, cold water, and capricious winds as challenges in the islands. Wind and current can build up extremely rough waters in certain areas, which aren’t necessarily obvious looking at a chart or the terrain. Experienced island instructors and guides know how to avoid these hazards.

The wildlife available for viewing from a kayaker’s vantage point can be amazing. Whales, porpoises, otters, seals, sea lions, and many marine birds make the islands their home. Being aware of appropriate behavior around wildlife is important for all who paddle.

Many animals are legally protected from harassment, and all should be approached with care and respect. Kayakers are in a unique position to enjoy – and impact – wildlife in the islands.

Many people have their first kayak experience on Orcas Island each summer. Both novice and skilled kayakers enjoy exploring the beautiful San Juan Islands.

Orcas’ Orcas

by Joe Gaydos, the SeaDoc Society Although Orcas Island wasn’t named after killer whales (who are often called orcas because of their Latin name, Orcinus orca), it would have been a fine idea as we are lucky to have 3 types of orcas that frequent our waters.

People are most familiar with the fish-eating type or “resident” orcas.

These whales are salmon eaters, preferring Chinook as shown in recent studies. In the San Juans we most commonly see resident whales from J, K, and L pods. These 85 or so animals make up what is called the Southern Resident Community. Once thought to number 200 animals, this population was recently listed as Endangered in the US and Canada.

While people most often see them in large groups off of the west side of San Juan Island where they cooperatively hunt salmon returning to spawn, they also can be seen in President Channel on the west side of Orcas, off North Beach, or in Rosario Strait off Orcas’ east side. Less commonly seen are resident whales from another community, the Northern Residents. These whales are more common north of the border, but they do make trips down into the San Juans.

While the fish eaters hunt in large groups, the mammal-eating type of killer whales, often referred to as “transients,” are usually seen in small groups of 3-5 animals. Because they hunt seals and other marine mammals, transient killer whales can be seen all around Orcas Island, especially in the late summer or early fall when there is a plethora of justborn fat, young and not-so-smart harbor seals.

Occasionally, we are lucky enough to see fish-eating killer whales that come into the San Juans from the open ocean. Like the resident killer whales, these “off-shore” orcas come in to eat salmon migrating back from the open ocean.

Orcas can be identified by the shape of their dorsal fin and white saddle patch and are individually known by name to experienced whale watchers. Don’t worry if you can’t tell what type of killer whale you see, some legends say that just seeing one is a gift. Get out to the beach and keep your eyes open for blows in the distance and don’t be disappointed if you don’t see an orca, there are plenty of other rewarding things to see on the beach.

Orcas Island can be a good place to see birds at almost any time of the year. Spring and fall bring small colorful migrants such as warblers. In summer, birds are nesting, and winter features many different types of ducks. Orcas has a great variety of habitats that attract different types of birds. There are rocky cliffs in Moran State Park, wetlands at Killebrew Lake and the Richardson Preserve, coniferous forests, and agricultural areas. And of course gulls, ducks, loons and various other waterfowl can be seen from almost any shoreline area.

A good area to look for birds starts with a right hand turn from the ferry landing. A short drive brings you to Killebrew Lake where many species of ducks and other aquatic birds can be found.

For marine birds, turn left from the ferry and left again on Deer Harbor Road. West Sound usually has several varieties of marine ducks.

Also on Deer Harbor Road at Wildrose Lane is a trail up Turtleback Mountain Preserve (San Juan Preservation Trust).

This is a good place to find eagles, woodpeckers, chickadees, sparrows and other woodland birds.

To reach the Frank Richardson Wildfowl Preserve (San Juan Preservation Trust), continue on the Deer Harbor Road and turn right on Channel Road. The little bridge over the estuary is worth a stop and the Preserve is a little farther along on the right side of the road. This wetland usually has swallows, ducks, blackbirds, herons, sparrows and wrens.

A hike around one of the lakes in Moran State Park or up Mount Constitution is often a good place to see eagles, vultures, and ravens, as well as small woodland birds. Rufous Hummingbirds abound all over Orcas Island in spring and summer. In spring you may even be dive-bombed by these territorial little mites. Even if you’re not a “birder,” keep your eyes open and you might see some of Orcas’ wonderful feathered residents.

Winter rains and endless strings of sunny summer days, together with a fascinating geology and rich soil makes Orcas and surrounding islands a vibrant agricultural region. Once the breadbasket of the Pacific Northwest, island farms shipped fruits and vegetables down the west coast as far as San Francisco. Though times have changed, Orcas is still home to many small farms that carve their living from the land and participate in our rich, local economy. Their fresh raised meats and produce are available directly from their farms, at the Eastsound Farmers’ Market and at numerous fine restaurants that showcase seasonal availability.

On this majestic green island there has always been a strong connection between people and place. Small independent operated businesses are the norm. A reverence for things natural and handmade is a constant theme. Surrounded by pints of strawberries, bouquets of flowers, fresh baked bread and the faces of the people who made them, one is reminded that this is still a place that feels very much handmade and locally grown.

Moran State Park Moran State Park is a must see! It has over 5,200 acres to explore by foot, bike, horse, boat or car. We have over 35 miles of trails, 5 freshwater lakes, picnic areas, overnight camping, a vacation house rental and an overnight retreat center that holds up to 144 people. We have beautiful flora, fauna and water falls as well as scenic views from the trails and/or from the comfort of your vehicle. Cascade Lake has a swimming beach, a playground for the kids, and fishing for bass, trout sunfish or Kokanee (a land locked Salmon) stocked from our hatchery. Concessions provide quick snacks and rentals for kayaks, row boats and paddle boats.

For the history buffs and architect enthusiasts, we have over 20 historical buildings that were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the ‘30s and ‘40s. The stone tower at the top of Mt Constitution contains information about Robert Moran and the CCC. The views from the top are spectacular. Interpretive panels provide information about panoramic views from the summit.

The Learning Center (open June- Sept) hosts guided hikes and naturalists to answer your questions. Just like the learning center, the Gift Shop (May-Sept) has something for everyone.

Both are staffed by volunteers for Friends of Moran.

All proceeds to Friends of Moran benefit Moran State Park projects and educational outreach.
