Located between the Washington mainland and Vancouver Island, Orcas is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the San Juan Islands.

The island — noted by locals as looking like an upside-down horseshoe — is geographically divided into several charming ‘hamlets.’

Orcas Village is the arrival point for the Washington State ferry.

Here you’ll find gift shops, a grocery store, a post office, lodging, restaurants and outdoor activities.

West Sound features a marina, lodging possibilities, a restaurant, and a community center.

Deer Harbor is the farthest point West on Orcas, and offers full marina services, various lodging choices, restaurants, shops and water activities.

Olga & Doe Bay are small in size, but offer visitors many choices, including restaurants, lodging, arts & crafts galleries, a marina, and plenty of activities.

A leisurely ferry ride is the perfect transition to take you from the busy freeways of the mainland to the quiet country roads of the islands. (The ticket you purchase is for a round trip).

With 176 islands and reefs at high tide, and 743 at low tide, San Juan is the smallest of our state’s 39 counties. Despite its small size, the county has more than 408 miles of rocky and sandy waterfront, boasting more shoreline than any other county in the nation and home to about 20 percent of the shoreline in Puget Sound. The Island’s natural beauty and rich marine environment draw thousands of people from all over the world who come to relax, kayak, SCUBA dive, whale watch, beachcomb, fish, birdwatch, and sail. Hundreds more come each year to engage in marine studies at one of the many research organizations, including the SeaDoc Society, The Friends of the San Juans, the Marine Resource Committee, Beachwatchers, the Whale Museum, or the famous University of Washington Labs.

By Plane

Catch a small plane at various Northwest locations, including Seattle’s SeaTac airport, Boeing Field, Lake Union, Lake Washington, or Portland and be on Orcas Island in approximately 45 to 60 minutes. Regular and charter flights are also available from other regional airports.

By Boat

There are several docking options for boaters, from day moorage to marinas.

Some seasonal favorites are Rosario, West Sound, Deer Harbor, Brandt’s Landing, Olga & Eastsound.

Getting here is half the fun!

These waters and shorelines are home to salmon (six species!), orca ‘killer’ whales, Dall’s porpoise, Stellar sea lions, river and sea otters, lingcod, 26 species of rockfish, and approximately 150 species of marine birds. Twenty-two varieties of endangered Puget Sound Chinook salmon use the San Juans in various life cycle stages. Visitors enjoy ready access to this unique marine environment, either on one’s own or with locally owned and operated guided tours.

Orcas Island’s economic and environmental prosperity is supported by, and compatible with, the protection and restoration of the marine ecosystem. In 2004 the waters surrounding these islands were formally designated a Marine Stewardship Area, which supports the preservation of our natural marine environment while allowing sustainable use by the tribes and other historic users, current and future residents, and visitors. We hope as you explore the land and waters on foot and by boat that you join Orcas Islanders in appreciating and caring for this incredible place.

Important: If you are traveling by Washington State Ferry, it is recommended you have your vehicle in the ferry line in Anacortes one-half to one hour before sailing during fall, winter and spring. One and a half to two hours ahead during summer and holiday weekends may be necessary to assure you get on board for your preferred sailing time.

See current sailing schedule at: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries To Washington State Ferry from Interstate 5: Take exit #230, drive west on Hwy. 20 to Anacortes (30 minutes). Turn right on Commercial Ave. and drive north, turn left at the light on 12th St. The ferry terminal is two miles ahead.

BIKING ON ORCAS ISLAND

Orcas Island roads, with steep hills, blind curves, and sometimes little or no shoulder, are challenging for bike riders at every level of ability.

Please use extreme caution when biking Orcas Island roadways.

OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SIMPLE GUIDELINES:

u Travel single file in small groups of 3 or 4, widely spaced apart. u Stop only on straightaways and move completely off the road.

u Use bicycle turnouts whenever possible.

Historic Places on Orcas Island

Orcas Island has a unique history, and a glimpse at that history can be found in its historic landmarks. The following is a sampling of those buildings. Please respect the buildings, grounds, and businesses that may be in these historic treasures.

Native island traditions came sharply into focus recently when ancient bison bones bearing marks of human activity were found on Orcas Island. Radiocarbon-dated some 11,500 years old, the Ayer Bison bones have attracted great interest in the scientific community, with islanders equally fascinated. While we can’t know who those earliest people were, we do know that the Lummi tribe of Coast Salish Indians was the traditional seasonal occupiers of Orcas Island as they ranged between Bellingham and the San Juan Islands.

Deer Harbor Community Club (Deer Harbor)

Built as the Deer Harbor School in 1905, it is now a community gathering spot.

The Pioneer days, before settlement of the Pig War in 1872, brought homesteaders but little development. Lime kilns dotted the shore and were the only commercial enterprise in the early days.

Agriculture was the trade of most of the new arrivals, and slowly replaced the lime kilns as the primary occupation. In 1895 some 95,000 boxes of apples were annually shipped from Eastsound.

Steamships arrived daily to transport the tons of island fruit crops to markets on the mainland, bringing the first tourists, known then as ‘Excursionists,’ with them.

Crow Valley School Museum (near Eastsound)

Built in 1888, and serving as the Crow Valley School until 1918, it now houses photos and artifacts.

Crow Valley Pottery (near Eastsound) The original Still House was built in 1866, and this two-room cabin now serves as a pottery shop.

Outlook Inn (Eastsound) Previously housing a store, post office and barber shop, this 1888 structure took its present name in 1942.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Eastsound)

Modeled after an English country church, this 1886 building was designed by Rev. Sidney Gray, the first rector.

Orcas Island Historical Museum (Eastsound)

Six early settlers’ cabins (late 1800s) and a water tower are featured on the Museum’s grounds. Originally from various parts of the island, each structure was reassembled at the site in 1956.

Resorts began on Orcas Island in 1905 and by 1948 there were 25 resorts on the island. Salmon fishing, hiking, camping, beachcombing, hunting, mountain climbing—visitors came for a wide range of attractions, stayed a few days or weeks, and many returned annually for years.

Robert Moran built Rosario at Cascade Bay beginning in 1905 while he also bought more than 2,500 acres of land, including almost all of Mount Constitution. Rosario became a fabulous private estate for Moran, while most of the land, including the mountain, was donated to the state. Moran State Park, most popular in the state, is a wonderful example of Moran’s generosity and vision.

History abounds on Orcas Island, where with every turn of the road another apple barn or prune dryer appears in a field or leaning by the side of the road. Traces of the wild past are still seen here and there and Indian artifacts still appear now and then. The Orcas Island Historical Museum in Eastsound has six cabins full of artifacts and exhibits about life on early Orcas Island in pioneer days and before, including the Ayer Bison bones as the centerpiece of its collection. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (WPA) in 1936, of sandstone hauled from nearby Sucia Island, it is patterned after 12th Century watchtowers of southeastern Europe.

Artworks Building in Olga (Olga) Built in 1936 as a packing plant on land owned by strawberry growers, it is now a cooperative art gallery and café.

Doe Bay Post Office (Doe Bay) Now part of an island resort, this 1908 building was part of a complete village port used for freight and passengers.

Go for a hike, a swim, play at the playground, bike the trails, rent a paddle boat, have a picnic, check out the waterfalls, go fish for trout, bass, and kokanee, or just drive to the top of Mt. Constitution for an amazing view of all the islands!

The beauty of an island is the opportunity to explore our beaches and local waters.

Check out the tide pools during low tide at the shoreline in Eastsound, or take a walk along nearby Crescent Beach. Make sure you are gentle with the inter-tidal critters and that you put everything back where you found it for future explorers.

You can explore our island in so many ways — boating, sailing, whale watching tours, guided kayak tours, horseback riding, biking, nature tours, farm tours, and the list goes on.

All these are well worth the price; this will be an adventure that you and the family will never forget!

If the kids are looking for something geared just for them, check out The Funhouse, an amazing community & learning center with dozens of kid-friendly hands-on exhibits. Give a call to the Orcas Island Rec Program, sponsors of kid and family-friendly programs year-round, such as art, music, and sports programs, guided hikes, kids camps, a fall triathlon, and field trips.

And if you have a literary soul, the Orcas Island Public Library often has something going on for kids, and features a terrific selection of children’s materials and story times. Visitor library cards are available, even if your Orcas visit is a short one.

With all of this and more, you surely will find something for everyone in the family.

Make sure that you have the appropriate footwear and clothing for your family adventure and be sure to bring snacks and water so you don’t have to go home early!

Orcas Village

Obstruction Pass State Park is a well-kept secret. Three trails lead you from the parking lot to the beach (approximately ½ mile). All are unique and there is interpretive signage and great scenery along the way. At the beach you can check out the tide pools, put your toes in the water, or have a picnic.

There are pit toilets but no running water, so bring a water bottle.

Orcas Island can be a good place to see birds at almost any time of the year. Spring and fall bring small colorful migrants such as warblers. In summer, birds are nesting, and winter features many different types of ducks. Orcas has a great variety of habitats that attract different types of birds. There are rocky cliffs in Moran State Park, wetlands at Killebrew Lake and the Richardson Preserve, coniferous forests, and agricultural areas. And of course gulls, ducks, loons and various other waterfowl can be seen from almost any shoreline area.

A good area to look for birds starts with a right hand turn from the ferry landing. A short drive brings you to Killebrew Lake where many species of ducks and other aquatic birds can be found.

For marine birds, turn left from the ferry and left again on Deer Harbor Road. West Sound usually has several varieties of marine ducks.

Also on Deer Harbor Road at Wildrose Lane is a trail up Turtleback Mountain Preserve (San Juan Preservation Trust).

This is a good place to find eagles, woodpeckers, chickadees, sparrows and other woodland birds.

Shopping “the Rock” While on Orcas (“the Rock” in local lingo), be sure to include a stroll through Eastsound and the surrounding hamlets that make up Orcas Island.

As you do, treat yourself to the rich variety of local goods offered by shops of all types. You’re sure to find that special gift for friend, family, or yourself.

To reach the Frank Richardson Wildfowl Preserve (San Juan Preservation Trust), continue on the Deer Harbor Road and turn right on Channel Road. The little bridge over the estuary is worth a stop and the Preserve is a little farther along on the right side of the road. This wetland usually has swallows, ducks, blackbirds, herons, sparrows and wrens.

A hike around one of the lakes in Moran State Park or up Mount Constitution is often a good place to see eagles, vultures, and ravens, as well as small woodland birds. Rufous Hummingbirds abound all over Orcas Island in spring and summer. In spring you may even be dive-bombed by these territorial little mites. Even if you’re not a “birder,” keep your eyes open and you might see some of Orcas’ wonderful feathered residents.

Moran State Park

When visiting Orcas Island make sure to check out Moran State Park! Moran has over 5,000 acres to explore by foot, bike, horse, boat or car. We have over 35 miles of trails, 5 freshwater lakes, several picnic areas, overnight camping, a vacation house rental and an overnight retreat center that holds up to 144 people. We also host one of the best views in the San Juan Islands at the top of Mount Constitution (2, 409 feet).

Whether you are here just for the day, or you plan to stay much longer, Moran is a site you will not want to miss because there is a little something for everyone. We have beautiful flora and fauna all over the park as well as scenic views from the trails and/or from the comfort of your vehicle. If you need to cool off we have a swimming beach at our Day Use area on Cascade Lake and there is even a playground for the kids! Sportfishing is a big draw to our park because we stock two of our lakes with Kokanee (a landlocked Salmon) from our Moran hatchery.

For the history buffs and architect fanatics, we have over 20 historical buildings that were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the ‘30s and ‘40s that can still be seen in the park today.

(Make sure you check out the stone tower at the top of Mt. Constitution!)

For families visiting for a few days check out a Moran Journey Pack.

They are available at the registration booth. For a small donation packs provide sharing nature games with children, color pencils, binoculars, magnifying glasses. It’s an environmental educational outreach for kids of all ages.
