ORCAS ISLAND

The island – noted by locals as looking like an upside-down horseshoe – is geographically divided into several charming ‘hamlets.’

Orcas Village is the arrival point for the Washington State ferry.

Here you’ll find gift shops, a grocery store, a Post Office, lodging, restaurants and outdoor activities.

West Sound features a marina, lodging possibilities, a restaurant, and a community center.

Eastsound is the town center on Orcas, and extends beyond the village core.

To the Southwest is Crow Valley, home to art studios, lodging, and the golf course. West Beach is due west from Eastsound and offers shops, lodging, and YMCA Camp Orkila. Eastsound proper is largely a walking village, offering shops of all kinds, many accommodation choices, a variety of restaurants, and many family & visitor activities. Located just to the South and East of Eastsound is Rosario, where you’ll find many lodging choices, as well as the famed resort of the same name, a restaurant, a general store, a marina, and lots of activities, including the nearby Moran State Park.

Olga & Doe Bay are small in size, but offer visitors many choices, including restaurants, lodging, arts & crafts galleries, a marina, and plenty of activities.

Getting to Orcas Island

By Car & Ferry

A leisurely ferry ride is the perfect transition to take you from the busy freeways of the mainland to the quiet country roads of the islands. (The ticket you purchase is for a round trip.)

By Plane

Catch a small plane at various Northwest locations, including Seattle’s SeaTac airport, Boeing Field, Lake Union, Lake Washington, or Portland and be on Orcas Island in approximately 45 to 60 minutes. Regular and charter flights are also available from other regional airports.

By Boat

There are several docking options for boaters, from day moorage to marinas.

Some favorites are Rosario, West Sound, Deer Harbor, Smuggler’s Villa, and Lieber Haven.

Orcas’ Orcas

by Joe Gaydos, the SeaDoc Society Although Orcas Island wasn’t named after killer whales (who are often called orcas because of their Latin name, Orcinus orca), it would have been a fine idea as we are lucky to have 3 types of orcas that frequent our waters.

People are most familiar with the fish-eating type or “resident” orcas.

These whales are salmon eaters, preferring Chinook as shown in recent studies. In the San Juans we most commonly see resident whales from J, K, and L pods. These 85 or so animals make up what is called the Southern Resident Community. Once thought to number 200 animals, this population was recently listed as Endangered in the US and Canada.

While people most often see them in large groups off of the west side of San Juan Island where they cooperatively hunt salmon returning to spawn, they also can be seen in President Channel on the west side of Orcas, off North Beach, or in Rosario Strait off Orcas’ east side. Less commonly seen are resident whales from another community, the Northern Residents. These whales are more common north of the border, but they do make trips down into the San Juans.

Important: If you are traveling by Washington State Ferry, it is recommended you have your vehicle in the ferry line in Anacortes one-half to one hour before sailing during fall, winter and spring. One and a half to two hours ahead during summer and holiday weekends may be necessary to assure you get on board for your preferred sailing time.

See current sailing schedule at: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries To Washington State Ferry from Interstate 5: Take exit #230, drive west on Hwy. 20 to Anacortes (30 minutes). Turn right on Commercial Ave. and drive north, turn left at the light on 12th St. The ferry terminal is two miles ahead.

BIKING ON ORCAS ISLAND Orcas Island roads, with steep hills, blind curves, and sometimes little or no shoulder, are challenging for bike riders at every level of ability.

Please use extreme caution when biking Orcas Island roadways.

Observe the following simple guidelines:  After leaving the ferry, pull off the roadway until all ferry traffic has passed.  Travel single file in small groups of 3 or 4, widely spaced apart.  Stop only on straightaways and move completely off the road.  Use bicycle turnouts whenever possible.

While the fish eaters hunt in large groups, the mammal-eating type of killer whales, often referred to as “transients,” are usually seen in small groups of 3-5 animals. Because they hunt seals and other marine mammals, transient killer whales can be seen all around Orcas Island, especially in the late summer or early fall when there is a plethora of justborn fat, young and not-so-smart harbor seals.

Occasionally, we are lucky enough to see fish-eating killer whales that come into the San Juans from the open ocean. Like the resident killer whales, these “off-shore” orcas come in to eat salmon migrating back from the open ocean.

Orcas can be identified by the shape of their dorsal fin and white saddle patch and are individually known by name to experienced whale watchers. Don’t worry if you can’t tell what type of killer whale you see, some legends say that just seeing one is a gift. Get out to the beach and keep your eyes open for blows in the distance and don’t be disappointed if you don’t see an orca, there are plenty of other rewarding things to see on the beach.

Orcas Island History

Historic Places on Orcas Island

Orcas Island has a unique history, and a glimpse at that history can be found in its historic landmarks. The following is a sampling of those buildings. Please respect the buildings, grounds, and businesses that may be in these historic treasures.

Spanish and English explorers first sighted Orcas Island in the early 1790s, but no white men lived here until hunters working for the Hudson’s Bay Company arrived in 1859.

Native races had lived here for generations, but few members of the Lummi tribe of Coast Salish peoples were here when white men first arrived. Ancient bison bones (Bison antiquus) indicate people hunted here more than eleven thousand years ago, but traces of their lives have long been lost in the deep mists of time.

Built as the Deer Harbor School in 1905, it is now a community gathering spot.

The saltwater that surrounds Orcas Island provided early inhabitants with an unending bounty of salmon and other marine foodstuffs, and the gentle climate supported fat populations of deer and elk in the forested land. Early pioneers carved small homesteads from the heavily-wooded land, and struggled to survive when trade was non-existent, no scheduled transportation serviced the islands, and armed soldiers disputed national ownership. Early commercial enterprises centered on the natural resources of limestone, salmon, and logging, but agriculture became the mainstay of our economy by 1900.

Built in 1888, and serving as the Crow Valley School until 1918, it now houses photos and artifacts.

Crow Valley Pottery (near Eastsound) The original Still House was built in 1866, and this two-room cabin now serves as a pottery shop.

Our first tourists were called ‘Excursionists’ because they braved the seas to travel on the steamships that carried the astonishing amounts of island fruit and vegetables to mainland markets. Orcas Island became widely known for our large production of apples, pears, peaches, and Italian prunes that were sold across the nation. When economic changes depressed farm incomes and fruit exports no longer supported the island’s population, those early ‘excursionists’ proved to be the harbingers of our future — tourists had discovered Orcas Island.

Outlook Inn (Eastsound) Previously housing a store, post office and barber shop, this 1888 structure took its present name in 1942.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Eastsound)

Modeled after an English country church, this 1886 building was designed by Rev. Sidney Gray, the first rector.

Orcas Island Historical Museum (Eastsound)

Six early settlers’ cabins (late 1800s) and a water tower are featured on the Museum’s grounds. Originally from various parts of the island, each structure was reassembled at the site in 1956.

Rosario Resort (near Eastsound) Built in 1906 by Robert Moran, who also served as Mayor of Seattle, the mansion’s teak and brass recall Moran’s ship-building expertise.

Observation Tower on Mt. Constitution (Moran State Park)

Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (WPA) in 1936, of sandstone hauled from nearby Sucia Island, it is patterned after 12th Century watchtowers of southeastern Europe.

In its heyday, Orcas Island had more than twenty-five resorts, offering everything from salmon fishing to peaceful forest hikes, hayrides to overnight stays atop Mount Constitution. Inhabitants appreciated the beautiful and unique resources nature has so generously bestowed upon Orcas Island. Thousands of tourists discovered Orcas Island, with many returning yearly to this peaceful island in the Salish Sea, far from the crowds and the rush of mainland life.

Orcas Island contains all of the mysteries that history has to offer — from ancient bison hunts by bands of early men living a precarious Ice Age existence, to the mystic ceremonies that taught young children in the native lodges on our beaches; from the danger and confusion of a remote frontier where two races sought a way to live together, to a settled farming community of sober, hardworking families warmly accepting the children of mixed races and cultures among them; from daring tales of desperate smugglers hotly pursued by armed Revenue Cutters of the Customs Service, to bucolic family picnics on picturesque beaches.

Orcas residents participate in a Choral Society, A Cappella choir, Community Band and Sinfonia. We perform in big musicals, smaller theatrical productions, dance concerts ranging in style from hiphop and world dance to modern, salsa, and aerial dance. Performers of all ages get in the act.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve indulged ourselves in a few high-flying circus performances. We sign our kids up for an annual talent show and have our very own Orcas Idol. We throw our creativity, talent and energy into the Solstice and 4th of July parades.

Winter rains and endless strings of sunny summer days, together with a fascinating geology and rich soil makes Orcas and surrounding islands a vibrant agricultural region. Once the breadbasket of the Pacific Northwest, island farms shipped fruits and vegetables down the west coast as far as San Francisco. Moran State Park

When visiting Orcas Island make sure to check out Moran State Park! Moran has over 5,000 acres to explore by foot, bike, horse, boat, or car. We have over 35 miles of trails, 5 freshwater lakes, several picnic areas, overnight camping, a vacation house rental, and an overnight retreat center that holds up to 144 people. We also host one of the best views in the San Juan Islands at the top of Mount Constitution (2, 409 feet).

Whether you are here just for the day, or you plan to stay much longer, Moran is a site you will not want to miss because there is a little something for everyone. We have beautiful flora and fauna all over the park as well as scenic views from the trails and/or from the comfort of your vehicle. If you need to cool off we have a swimming beach at our Day Use area on Cascade Lake and there is even a playground for the kids! Sportfishing is a big draw to our park because we stock two of our lakes with Kokanee (a landlocked Salmon) from our Moran hatchery.

For the history buffs and architect fanatics, we have over 20 historical buildings that were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the ‘30s and ‘40s that can still be seen in the park today. (Make sure you check out the stone tower at the top of Mt. Constitution!)

If you want to go on a guided nature hike or you want a fun family program for a few hours, stop by the registration booth (summer only) to find out about our free daily interpretive programs.
