Market Overview As 2021 concluded, Maldives welcomed over 1.3 million tourists for the year, surpassing its tourist arrival targets despite the several challenges faced during the year due to the pandemic of COVID-19. Since the reopening of borders for international travellers in July 2020, tourist arrivals have steadily been increasing with the Maldives with an overall increase during this year compared to that of 2020. Maldives recorded its 1 millionth tourist arrival on 29th October 2021 and 1.3 millionth tourist arrival on 27th December 2021 reaching the yearly target. Tourist arrivals in 2021 started to bounce back with the easing of travel restrictions as well as safety measures against Covid-19 implemented in the Maldives. As the tourist arrivals were recorded at 1,321,937 on 31st December 2021, it is a 138% increase from the slow arrivals recorded in 2020 due to the closing of borders of the Maldives. Tourist arrivals in 2021 however, shows an overall decrease of 21% in comparison to the arrivals recorded during the same period in 2019, a recordbreaking year for Maldives tourism. Daily arrivals during the year remained over 3,600 tourists with an average stay of 8 nights. India remained the top market for Maldives tourism in 2021 dominating over 22% with 291,787 arrivals. Russia followed closely at second contributing 16.8% with 222,422 tourists. Third, comes Germany contributing 7.2% with 95,358 arrivals. Other top markets include the U.K, U.S.A, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Ukraine, France and Switzerland respectively. India climbed the ranks and made its place as the #1 top source market for the Maldives since February 2021 overtaking Russia. New markets emerged from the European Region and the Middle East including Ukraine and Saudi Arabia.

Countries like Italy and United Kingdom (UK) – the Maldives’ most traditional market for tourism saw a decline in arrivals in 2021 due to the travel restrictions. They were only given the green light to travel to the Maldives from September onwards and arrivals from Italy and UK are expected to increase this new year. Additional ease of restrictions from Southeast Asia countries such as Singapore and Thailand with the commencement of direct flights, tourist arrivals from these countries are expected to increase significantly as well. According to the latest annual statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 1,140 tourist accommodation facilities were in operation till 29th December 2021 including resorts, marinas, guesthouses, safari vessels and hotels. The total operating capacity was recorded as 53,140 beds. Despite the global challenges, the year 2021 has been a very successful year for Maldives tourism. Tourist bed capacity increased by 9.4% and the bed nights exceeded 11 million breaking the previous record of 10.7 nights. Furthermore, Maldives won the World’s Leading Destination Award by World Travel Awards for the 2nd time consecutively. This year, Maldives is also getting ready to celebrate an exceptional year, marking 50 years – the Golden Jubilee celebration of tourism in the Maldives.

Guests will be tempted to go back to this dining location several times since the experience of dipping your toes in the powdery sand while savoring freshly caught, ethically fished, and flavorful seafood is an experience anyone would want again. 3 Top-Notch Innovative Resorts in The Maldives Maldives is no longer a destination for only honeymooners with its sumptuous overwater villas. There is a growing emphasis on sustainability and innovation, and more resorts are forging their own paths, whether it’s with unique water conservation systems or treehouse-like stilted villas. Let’s take a closer look at three of the most innovative resorts in the Maldives.

Patina Maldives, Fari Islands The modernist property opened in May 2021, designed by Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan looks like a place in Palm Springs and it’s just a short speedboat ride from Male’. Whether it is the beautiful Rake boutique or the resort’s spaceship-like yacht Adastra, everything here is easy on the eyes. The 11 room categories known as Fari Studios include a block of hotel-style rooms. Despite its masterly design, the Fari Marina Village, a hub where the highlights include free ice cream doled out from a tuk-tuk and events such as campfire marshmallowtoasting sessions. For children aged between 4 and 11, the Footprints Kids’ club offers plenty of activities while those over 6 can check out the Fab Lab, with its 3D printer and science-based activities. Even though Patina is an artificial island and it is not as lush as other resorts, there is still plenty of room to roam with its 3 island concept. Shuttle boats whisk guests across the water to the Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, and will eventually connect to the Capella Maldives when it opens in 2023.

Siyam World Maldives

Experience the excitement of catching a wave, regardless of the conditions of the sea. Cheval Blanc Randheli recently opened the only surf simulator in the Maldives that gives guests the opportunity to indulge in the thrill of catching a wave directly in the FlowRider.

It is impossible to miss the enormous floating obstacle course, formed of supersize letters spelling out Siyam as your seaplane swoops over Siyam World.

The FlowRider allows anyone to ride a wave, beginners and more experienced surfers of all ages. After all, the best surfer out there is the one having the most fun. The resort’s water sports Ambassadeurs are on hand to provide assistance as well as coaching, and ensure you safely enjoy this experience. Once a week, the little ones can join a complimentary try-out to discover surfing with Le Carrousel Ambassadeurs. Set in the pristine Noonu Atoll, Cheval Blanc Randheli is an intimate and contemporary haven. A 40-minute journey north of Male’, the 46-villa Maison has been conceived in harmony with the island’s lush surroundings and lagoon views. Offering an ideal getaway for couples, families and individual thrill-seekers alike, the resort’s Ambassadeurs are waiting for you to create unforgettable moments for you and ensure a return home with everlasting memories.

Siyam World is the biggest resort in the Maldives with 472 villas and 21 room categories. The fun factor is cranked to the max, with colorful overwater villas, each with its own slide or the way the islands areas are named after cities. Siyam World offers a huge range of diving courses, alongside more unusual activities such as ‘mermaid courses’ and scooter snorkeling. Despite the endless array of family-friendly features – amenities include a Fifa-standard football pitch, tennis courts with three different surfaces and a fantastic club for children aged three to 11 – Siyam World is also a great option for couples and solos. Most of the 12 restaurants and bars are at the southern end of the island, but at the northern tip, I enjoy solo sundowners at Mint bar or lounging by the adult-only pool. Perhaps bigger really is better, after all.

very difficult and demanding to work in all of them. And I believe this will be my next challenge, working at Kuda Villingili Resort, and I’m sure it will be an amazing journey.

Andrea Montuori Executive Chef at Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives Andrea Montuori is the Executive Chef at Kuda Villingili Resort, a brand-new luxury resort nestled in the North Male’ Atoll of Maldives. Having worked extensively in iconic properties all over the world, Andre now brings his unmatched culinary know-how and skillset to the team at Kuda Villingili. Here, Andrea shares the story of how he came to be a chef, and delves further into his career so far in the Maldivian hospitality industry. Could you tell us a bit about your career thus far? I started my career in Sardinia, Italy, about twenty years ago. Then I flew to Bologna, and I began working in the big cities of Italy. After that, I moved to Ireland, and from there on, it was a long journey of traveling and working in various parts of the world. I came to the Maldives after having worked in Moscow, Russia. Moscow is one of the biggest metropolises in Europe, and I had worked in the Hotel National in Moscow, which is one of the most iconic properties in the world, boasting 120 years of history. After Russia, I decided to go from -30 degrees to +30 degrees, which is why I chose the Maldives. My first contract in the Maldives was with One & Only Reethi Rah, which is another glorious and renowned global property chain. Currently, I’m here at Kuda Villingili serving in the position of Executive Chef. What attracted you to a career as a chef? First of all, cooking comes really naturally to me. I’ve always felt great in the kitchen, whether it was at home or in a commercial kitchen. I’ve also always been fascinated by the chef’s uniform. I wear this traditional uniform, because I have that childhood image imprinted in my mind – that a chef has to wear this beautiful, white double-breasted jacket with buttons. That’s the picture I was always dreaming about. It all went very well even from the beginning, so I never stopped thinking that being an executive chef would be the end goal of my career. What is the most notable challenge you have faced in your career? I’m very lucky to have been able to work with some of the most iconic properties across the world. From the Hassler Hotel in Rome which boasts 125 years of history, to La Reserve Geneva, yet another sublime property. Every place that I’ve worked in had their own set of challenges, in their own way. It’s hard for me to choose one; it’s been

What would you consider your biggest personal success? Even after twenty years of being a chef, I still receive messages from my old students and commis chefs who had worked for me. They would tell me that they’ve now become chefs themselves, that they now work in different parts of the world, or that they are now leading a hotel themselves. They would thank me for the inspiration and knowledge, and I think that’s my biggest success honestly. As chefs, we are not only cooks, we are also teachers. We help others grow. We guide people and teach them how to succeed in this line of work. That is my biggest achievement, to have played a role in the growth of hundreds of young chefs throughout my career. What’s the best advice you can give to those looking to join the industry? The best advice I can give is to be patient. Be very patient, because there is a long way to go to become an executive chef. Trust in what you do, because although it may be a challenging job, in the end it is very rewarding. Of course, there will be tough days. There will be days where you feel like you might give up, but remember that hard work always pays off. With dedication and passion, you can achieve anything.

Giovanni Sibilla Dive Manager at NAKAI Alimatha Resort Giovanni Sibilla is the dive manager at NAKAI Alimathà Resort, a paradisiac island located close to a selection of truly unique and world-renowned dive sites in Vaavu atoll. With several famous reefs and channels, this atoll offers a gateway to an entirely different dimension, magical and weightless, filled with flashy marine life and curious biodiversity just waiting to be explored. With over 15 years of diving experience in the Maldives, Giovanni tells us his story and further about why he pursued a career in diving. Could you please tell us a little about yourself? Yes, why not. My name is Giovanni and I come from Italy. I started scuba diving in 1992, and that was a long time ago. I love the Maldives and I remember my first time here and that was on 20th January 2000. I’ve been around the Maldives many times at different diving spots at different atolls. I have been at Alimatha since 2006. I love Alimatha, I love to work here and I love the diving spots here. What got you interested in diving and pursuing a career in this field? First of all, I want to say when I started as an instructor, it was really interesting for me to conduct lessons and teach people how to dive. That is an idea I have always loved. If I were to say something a little different, it would be that I also love to make videos, recording and editing included. We are talking about underwater videos here. Could you tell us about your experience so far at Alimatha? I remember my first time in 2006 at Alimatha, and there were 4 other dive instructors here and one of them was Maldivian. He is Shareef Abdulla and is also my best friend. I find Alimatha and the diving spots really nice as it is important for my job. Alimatha looks magical, every guest tells me that they are in heaven when they visit here. Everyone likes it here. I feel comfortable here, everyone feels like family, even the management. It is like a magic spot here. When I first started, I was an instructor and after one year, I was promoted to a leader. My career has been growing for the last 15 years. Before I was only the manager of diving at Alimatha but now at Dhiggiri and Mayafushi as well, as they are from the same company. I am really happy because of this.

What’s the best part about your job? Not an easy question but if I were to say one thing, it would simply be because I love to dive, and I love to teach and guide people about diving. How do you like the Maldives so far? As I said earlier, I have been to the Maldives starting from 2000 and all I could say is wow. I come from Italy and there you just see videos and other documentaries. If you have never been here, you wouldn’t believe what the Maldives is about. My first time here, from the plane windows, I saw the sea and islands, and it was just wonderful. I felt amazing when I jumped into the Maldivian waters for the first time and I thought to myself, I don’t think I can move away from the Maldives after this. I also love the people here. I have a connection with Maldivian people, and I have good friends here. I also love the local islands, and the people are just wonderful. Why is diving in Vaavu so special? I’ve been in Rasdhoo Atoll, North Male Atoll, North Male Atoll and South Ari Atoll. I think the difference between Vaavu Atoll and the other atolls is that we have a lot of channels here at Vaavu. We have big pelagic fish and lots of sharks. We also have one of the best diving spots in the Maldives, where you can see 50 – 80 sharks every day, even during the nighttime. So many safari boats come here just for diving because of the number of diving channels.

Preeti Bomzon Executive Chef at Lti Maafushivaru Preeti Bomzon is the Executive Chef at Lti Maafushivaru, a private island resort nestled in the idyllic South Ari Atoll. Our team sat down with Preeti to find out more about her beginnings as a chef, and to delve further into her experience so far in the Maldivian hospitality industry. Could you give a short introduction of yourself? My name is Preeti Bomzon. I’m from India, from the hillsides which actually boast some of the best teas in the world. It’s very cold over there, and very different from Maldives. But I suppose that’s what brings me to the tropics. I did Hotel Management in Calcutta, after which I worked in various hotels in India, including Taj, Oberoi, Hyatt Hotels. Right now, I’m the executive chef at Lti Maafushivaru in the Maldives, a position I’ve been in since January 2020. When did you decide to become a chef? And how did you start your career? There are two parts to this answer. First of all, I come from a big family with several aunts and uncles on both sides. And many of them, in hindsight, cooked really amazing food. By the time I was 9 or 10 years old, I could discern the differences in taste between when one aunt cooked and the other cooked, or when my mother cooked, or when my grandmother cooked. I understood that tastes and flavours from different people varied, and I understood what tasted good. I didn’t know I wanted to be a chef back then, but that understanding, that small culinary sense in me, it was giving me a little knock. Then there’s the other part. When I became a teenager, as much as I liked to hang around with my friends and have fun, I found that being in the kitchen, cooking and helping, it was just as fun and enjoyable. Fast forward five years, and there’s suddenly a hotel management brochure that’s been given to me. I was 17 at the time, and I did not know what it entailed. But I went for it, and that’s when I began to truly learn how hotels ran. I learned about the departments that kept a hotel afloat – housekeeping, front office, F&B, and kitchen. I realized then that I was really good in kitchen. Whether it was theory or practical, I didn’t have to put so much effort in it. I was just good at it. It was my calling; it felt like a magnetic pull. What has your experience in the Maldives been like so far? I initially stayed at Male’ and Hulhumale’, which are way smaller. But I felt an affinity to Maldives, even then. Life was very convenient; everything I needed I could find. I had no worries. At the time, I spent a lot of time around computers doing office work. Things change when you actually set foot on the property. Everything was under construction back then. I love pre-openings, the organized chaos. For me, it’s pure adrenaline, and that’s what I love. I think that’s also part

of the reason why I came to Lti Maafushivaru, because it was under pre-opening. To be able to set up the place with your hands, to touch every equipment, to be able to say: “This is where I want the fryer, this is where I want the oven, this is the person I want for the teppanyaki, this is the person I want for the tandoor, this is the pastry person that I need and recommend…” To be able to build the place and team, to be able to make that first dish on the menu. That is what brings true passion to the property. Obviously, we opened when the world was rife with the virus. Everyone knows what was happening in the world. With that monumental challenge, we opened Lti Maafushivaru in August 2020. We were very proud to have our first guest. That heart-pumping thrill of knowing that the food you’re preparing is for a real guest this time; this is not a training, this is not a simulation. This is happening in real time. So, it was very exciting to be able to slowly build up the team, hire more staff, get more equipment, and set up more kitchens. That satisfaction you get, it’s unlike anything else. It’s not just about doing what you’ve done, but realizing that this is only the beginning of the entire journey. How does Lti Maafushivaru cater to its guests’ tastes? At Lti Maafushivaru, we have 81 rooms, 5 restaurants and 8 different menus. That means that for every 16 rooms, there’s a restaurant. This property is an F&B intrinsic place. You wouldn’t expect that there to be not only a Japanese restaurant, but a teppanyaki. You wouldn’t expect there to be an amazing restaurant overwater which specializes in grills, seafood, the best premium meats. And just a few meters down, you’ll find a restaurant which has a separate menu for lunch, and a really upscale menu for dinner which is more on the Western/Mediterranean side. In the afternoon, you get 3 menus, including a tapas menu with a gorgeous range of tapas. We have a lounge that offers the best baguettes, wraps, ice creams, and really delicious pastries. There’s also an extensive lunch menu, which covers the tastes from Italy, Maldives, India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Thailand, a bit of Mexican fare, a touch of Japanese. That’s why I’m confident that if there’s a guest that comes in with a really diverse taste, Lti Maafushivaru is the address. Lastly, what advice do you have for young chefs looking to climb the ranks? I believe that a chef is only as good as his or her last dish. You may cook 62 or 63 incredible dishes, but if the 64th dish isn’t good, that’s what you’ll be judged for. Whether you’re a commis chef, a sous chef or an executive chef, you need to be at the top of your game all the time. The tenacity, the perseverance, the knowledge; you need to be hungry for it. You need to be ready for the heat. And I’m not talking about temperature. As a young chef, you’re likely at ground zero. You’re at the bottom of the food chain. To climb the ranks and make it, you need to have passion, you need to have patience. You need to be able to literally stand on your feet for long hours. For the first four or five years, you really need to invest in the profession without hoping that you’ll get a promotion tomorrow, or day after tomorrow. If you’re doing your job correctly, the promotion will come when you’re not even looking for it.

SriLankan IT Bags Silver Award at The FITIS Digital Excellence Awards SriLankan Airlines won the Silver Award in the “Corporate IT Awards” category at the Digital Excellence Awards organized by FITIS (Federation of Information Technology Industry in Sri Lanka) which was held recently. The “Corporate IT Awards” recognizes and rewards companies that deliver outstanding operational excellence, measurable business advantage, tangible customer experience or outstanding impact through leading-edge implementation and usage of information technology. The assessment criteria is chiefly based on how Digital Transformation is achieved through a given product or system. Further, “Corporate IT Awards” aims to identify and celebrate IT organizations that go the extra mile to sustain their new technology and operational capabilities in the long run by addressing the critical business needs of their organization and people. ‘Digitalized Flight Operations through AeroOps (Tech Crew VR) and CabinOps (CCVR – Cabin Crew VR)’ was the entry forwarded by SriLankan Airlines, which mainly highlighted the operational transformation achieved

onboard with the automation of Voyage Report processes related to both Tech and Cabin Crew members. This enabled productivity and efficiency in the operations while streamlining the back-office support services for improved user and passenger experience. Digitalizing the flight crew Voyage Report (VR) capturing process; safety details capturing and analysis process, workflow configurations and providing comprehensive management information for decision making in terms of safety, regulatory and operational aspects are the main benefits. Regulatory information capturing, sharing, and storing electronically in secure and reliable form has aligned this system with compliance requirements. A strategic decision was taken to develop a solution with in-house software engineering resources who possess expert knowledge in airline domain, systems integration & mobile app development. Through this initiative the airline has saved 2M USD cash outflow.

Jaoli Being

Introducing Joali Being, a New Wellbeing Concept in the Maldives The newly opened island retreat is set on the secluded island of Bodufushi in Raa Atoll, a 40-minute seaplane journey away from Male International Airport. With 68 villas, each with its own butler or ‘Jadugar’, they combine boundless luxury with a dedicatedly natural approach. Joali Being is the region’s first nature-immersive wellbeing island retreat in the Maldives and they have just made their hotly awaited debut. “Joali Being is a wellbeing retreat unlike any other in the world; it is a transformative destination aimed to inspire and ignite the very deepest of mindful connections to one’s self, one another, and one’s environment by enhancing our relationship with the surrounding natural world, our bodies, and our minds,” says General Manager Özgür Cengīz. Nature is at the very core of this new offering, from its architecture and interiors, right down to its highly tailored treatments. The new resort has been built from the ground up using biophilic design principles, which is a mode of architecture and design that integrates nature

into a central part of the design, connecting and building occupants more closely to the natural world. This has left most of the island’s wild forest untouched, meaning a lush and verdant island landscape cocoons guests as soon as they arrive. A truly tailored immersive approach awaits each guest, each of whom will be greeted with an initial in-depth consultation on arrival. A bespoke program, ranging from five days to three weeks, will then be designed which blends both ancient and modern methods. Offerings center around four pillars: mind, skin, microbiome, and energy. Depending on the concern, programming can be tailored even further to focus on a whole array of areas such as strength and vitality, mental clarity and wellbeing, hormonal balance, women’s health, digestive and weight rebalance, and restorative sleep, as well as movement and alignment.

How the Global Wellness Economy is Taking Over Post-COVID Travel

Up until the onslaught of the COVID-19 health crisis, the world of wellness – a $4.4 trillion industry of care, fitness, nutrition, and holistic health – had been witnessing a monumental ascension. Now, in spite of the temporary shocks caused by pandemic-induced restrictions, this sector is bouncing back with incredible gusto. According to the December 2021 report by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI), the global wellness tourism market dropped from $720.4 billion to $435.7 billion between 2019 and 2020. It is, however, experiencing a massive rebound. GWI forecasts the average annual growth rate of wellness tourism at 20.9 percent from 2020 to 2025, outpacing the trajectory of every other segment of the wellness economy.

67

Photo: Kagi Maldives Spa Island

These figures come as no surprise. After dealing with the stresses of the pandemic over the last two years, consumers are increasingly aware that all aspects of their lives – where they live, how they work, what they eat, and how they exercise, socialize and travel – impact their health outcomes, mental resilience, and overall sense of well-being. Taking time off regularly has many health benefits for holidaymakers. Studies have shown that vacations can reduce the risk of anxiety, metabolic syndrome and heart disease, while boosting overall productivity and life satisfaction. Though this was known well before the pandemic, due to holidays being cancelled and lockdowns causing additional strain on mental health, emerging travel trends place wellness at the forefront.

There has been a shift in perception of what makes up a relaxing holiday, deepening the need for quality time with friends and family, spending time offline, and reconnecting with both nature and one’s own self. The GWI report also states that wellness travelers are typically more affluent, educated, and well-traveled, and willing to spend more on travel experiences, services, and amenities that support their health and well-being. GWI notes that the pockets of wellness travellers are comparatively much deeper, even during the pandemic. As per the report, international wellness tourists spent $1,601 per trip on average in 2020, which is about 35% higher than the typical international tourist. This outlook is especially promising for the Maldives’ hospitality industry, which is becoming increasingly wellness-minded.

“Fehi Kuramaa” Waste Management Program Launched by Velaa Resort to Noonu Atoll General Manager of Velaa Resort Wayne Milgate launched a waste management program during a ceremony which was held in Noonu Velidhoo. The program goes by the name “Fehi Kuramaa” which means “Let’s Make it Green”. Noonu Atoll Council President and presidents from the administrative islands of Noonu Atoll attended this ceremony. The aim of this program is to raise awareness amongst students and the local citizens of the island on sustainable waste management. This program also falls under Velaa Island Resorts corporate social responsibility. More programs will be held in 13 administrative islands throughout November. All sessions under this program will be carried out by experts in waste management. At the event held, Milgate stated that tourism is one of the main parts of the Maldivian economy and that efforts must be made to prevent the loss of the beauty of the country. Waste management is important in all islands of Maldives to achieve this goal, he said.

Velidhoo Council President Athif Hussain said waste management is essential for the whole country, especially Velidhoo and that it is important to create awareness among children from an early age on waste management. Two awareness sessions were held on Monday for children and adults at Noonu Atoll Education Centre. More than 400 schoolchildren and adults attended both sessions. Information on three R’s of waste management (reduce, reuse, recycle) was shared during these sessions. In addition to highlighting the importance of recycling, they also discussed separating and using the waste in different ways.

Sun Island Resort & Spa Celebrates World Sustainability Day Sun Island Resort & Spa, awarded Luxury Eco Resort in the 2021 World Luxury Travel Awards, is set on one of the largest Maldives islands measuring 1.6KM long, located in the Southern tip of South Ari Atoll near the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA). A magical resort offering guests an abundance of freedom and unprecedented privacy to reconnect with nature surrounded by the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. October marks an important month when it comes to Sustainability and protecting the planet for the future. Climate Action Day on the 24th of October and Sustainability Day on the 27th of October remind us about the importance of taking care of the planet. However, these days are not simply one day to make a change but rather the encouragement to progress in continuing to strive towards a sustainable future. In a commitment to environmental sustainability, Villa Hotels & Resorts has created the movement along with a social media hashtag #MYPLANETVILLA to help in raising awareness on the brands’ sustainable initiatives across the Maldives collection of resorts. Sun Island Resort & Spa takes every opportunity to execute innovative energy saving and waste management techniques throughout the resort, inviting guests to help and be part of a sustainable future by adopting energy and water saving strategies by only washing their towels and linen when needed and reusing and recycling as much as possible. Supporting the resort in maintaining the lush natural environment while being more environmentally conscious, allows guests to immerse themselves in an unforgettable adventure that brings them closer to nature and inspires a deeper connection during their vacation at the resort.

One of the latest sustainability initiatives Villa Hotels & Resorts has introduced at Sun Island Resort is the concept of growing your own fruits and vegetables on land provided to resort team members to grow fresh produce they can nurture and cultivate with the aim to sell back to the resort. This idea presents a host of positive benefits both for the resort and its colleagues. The chance to be self-sufficient and while providing for the community gives a wealth of experience and opportunity for resort colleagues. In addition to the rich and fertile environment, the island provides a sanctuary for various migratory birds that take shelter within the dense tropical vegetation. Guests can enjoy the sweet sounds of the tropical birds while rejuvenating and being at one with nature.

Reethi Beach Resort, Baa Atoll Maldives Awarded Green Globe Certificate Reethi Beach Resort in the Baa Atoll Maldives was recently recognized by Green Globe for its dedication to environmentally friendly and environmentally sustainable activities. The iconic 4* Reethi Beach Resort is located in the known Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that hosts the world-famous Hanifaru Bay, home of the majestic manta rays from June till October. Indulge in a rustic Robinson Crusoe feeling combined with a relaxed atmosphere – a true Maldivian island experience, certified by the Green Globe. This pristine, secluded area places a high value on environmentally and socially sustainable projects, and the resort is committed to safeguarding the area’s coral reefs, marine and plant life. “To be a member of the Green Globe certification programme demonstrates how our long-term environmental sustainability goals and actions have developed a positive green community here in Baa atoll and here at Reethi Beach. We look forward to putting in our best efforts to promote sustainable tourism in the Maldives continuously,” commented Denise Schmidt, Resort Manager, Reethi Beach Resort. Reethi Beach also features its own water treatment plants to use the Island’s limited supply of freshwater efficiently. As a result, water pollution is reduced, aquatic habitats are protected, and human health hazards are minimised. The island boasts an extensive Sustainability Management Plan for the property. For example, plastic bottles are being replaced with glass bottles, and plastic straws are being replaced with paper straws as part of a drive to reduce trash. This strategy specifies, records, and monitors reduction goals on a monthly basis to minimize waste that is not reused or recycled.

The green team at Reethi Beach Resort organizes CSR events and environmental observances. Educating and raising awareness are two of the primary goals of this energetic group’s activity in the community. The resort does everything to help the surrounding islands and their people. A wide variety of recipes feature native reef seafood and yellowfin tuna, papaya, watermelon, bananas, and coconuts sourced from neighbouring islands as much as possible.

TTM Connect Meetings

TTM Awards and Gala

The tourism industry around the world faced huge challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and many countries are still struggling. Meanwhile, Maldives is displaying a speedy recovery rate, which can be primarily attributed to the hard work being done by stakeholders in the industry.

After a hectic day of meetings, over 250 industry professionals gathered for the TTM Awards and Gala Dinner, which played a vital role in allowing the participants to network with each other in a more relaxed setting. The Gala Dinner was held at Marina @ CROSSROADS, compliments from the team at CROSSROADS Maldives, the hosting partner of TTM 2021.

Last year’s Pre-Scheduled Meetings, that were conducted virtually and physically, presented an opportunity for industry leaders to come together to discuss the challenges and what can be done to improve the current situation. Featuring some of the major leading luxury properties, last year’s TTM Maldives proved to be a successful platform for some of the newly opened resorts and preopening resorts to network with leading travel agents across the globe.
