Market Overview

The Ministry of Tourism in the Maldives has reported that the country’s tourism industry has been growing steadily over the past few years, with the number of tourist arrivals increasing year after year.

As of 25th April 2023, more than 661,628 tourists have arrived in the Maldives, representing a 19.5% increase compared to the same period last year and a significant improvement from the 377,518 arrivals recorded in the same period of 2021. This development bears immense significance for the tourism industry of the country, as it continues to be a crucial contributor to the economy of the Maldives.

The statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism show that the majority of tourists arriving in the Maldives come from three main source markets: Russia, India, and the United Kingdom. These countries accounted for 11.8%, 10.7%, and 9.6% of the market share, respectively, making them the top three source markets for Maldives tourism. Other top markets include Italy, Germany, the USA, China, France and Switzerland. In addition, South Korea has recently emerged as one of the top ten markets, with 11,766 recorded arrivals.

With an average daily tourist arrival of 5,753 and an average length of stay of 7.9 days, the Maldives has established itself as a must-visit destination for those seeking a tropical getaway.

The Maldives government has set a target of 1.8 million tourist arrivals by the end of 2023, and with the current growth rate, it seems that this target is well within reach. The government successfully achieved its then-goal of 1.6 million tourists in 2022, which was a significant milestone for the country’s tourism industry. The country’s focus on attracting visitors from around the world has resulted in a diverse range of offerings and a thriving tourism industry.

Hoba Spa by Oaga Resorts: Inspired by Maldivian Healing Traditions

‘Hoba’ is an ancient Dhivehi word meaning kindness and balance. The Hoba Spa is a holistic wellness brand developed by Oaga Resorts, offering the essence of Maldivian healing traditions passed down from generations (Dhivehi Beysverikan) incorporated into modern-day therapy techniques. The brand does not just pay lip service to the concept, as the basic architecture, names, methods and oils used are all rooted deeply in Maldivian traditions and to the bare island life in its purest sense. Love is surely in the details of this brand and space.

A Warm Welcome at Bodu Ashi

A therapy session at the Hoba Spa of Oaga Art Resort starts at the Bodu Ashi, named and fashioned after the traditional entrance area with a large swing where visitors to an island home would sit and have a chat. Then you are greeted by your Hoba Beysverin, either a Beys Goyye’ (female) or a Beys Kalo (male) who welcomes you with a cold tea and a chilled towel. Combined with the misting of your face, this sets the mood for calm throughout the rest of the journey. They then offer Hiy Huba cards based on ancient Dhivehi words, allowing you to intuitively choose your intention for the therapy prior to experiencing it.

Choose Your Oil Blend at Atharuge’

Once you have enjoyed your tea, you are then escorted into the Atharuge’. As was tradition, the ambience is quite intimate in this dark room, lit only by candlelight inspired by oil lamps. Atharuge’ is the Dhivehi name given for the perfumery which existed within the royal palaces, and this modern-day Atharuge’ offers locally sourced and handmade oils, fit for kings and queens throughout the ages.

As you walk towards the counter at the far end of the room, whiffs off the local ingredients and oils surround you. Here at the counter, you can choose from the signature oil blends and watch the Hoba Beysverin mix them in front of you. These oil blends are carefully curated by award-winning Maldivian wellness leader Zulfishan (Xubba), who has dedicated over 16 years to the spa industry of the Maldives. Zulfishan comes from a long line of Maldivian healers, and her expertise is rooted in the age-old practices which have been passed on to her from generations and childhood memories of her grandmother practising the traditional ways of healing.

26

The Hoba Dhulhaheyo experiences include Yoga, Power HOBA, HOBilates and Adu Healing (sound healing Tibetan bowls), some of which are predominantly based on the moon phases under San’dhu Moon Therapies. The spa offers daily morning and evening rituals, providing guests with tools and techniques to either prepare for or end the day with peace.

According to Laura, the Spa Manager who has been instrumental in developing and curating the concept, a very strong reason for creating the Hoba Spa in this manner was to really showcase to the guests what the Maldives has to offer within a spa awareness concept. Laura and Zulfishan, along with their team at Hoba Spa by Oaga Resorts, strive to give life to Maldivian traditions which are otherwise waning. Indeed, the use of time-tested remedial ingredients and the space they have created offer nostalgia which is sure to awaken your senses and ground you to these Maldivian soils.

Once you have picked your signature blend of oil, you are escorted to the spa pods, each of which has been named after Nakaiy from the local monsoon calendar. The therapies offered here are a mixture of Asian therapies or techniques, blending the traditional medicinal practices seamlessly with the modern contemporary touch.

Hoba Spa’s hydrotherapy Fen Vadaa area is another special concept comprising four parts; a rain shower adapted from the tropical rains of the rainy monsoon, a Vevu heated water bath, the Dhumashige Sweat Lodge blending the idea of the traditional Dhumashige where things are cooked and the sweat lodges of South America, and finally a well where you wash off.

Steve Ng

Group General Manager at Maldives Inflight Catering, Hulhule Island Hotel and Madifushi Private Island

Our team had a chat with Steve Ng, Group General Manager at Maldives Inflight Catering, Hulhule’ Island Hotel and Madifushi Private Island Maldives to find out more about his 33-year career in the hospitality industry. He began his career in accountancy, but a part-time job at a hotel sparked a passion for culinary arts and hospitality.

Can you tell us a bit about your career so far?

I began my career in Accountancy, with plans to pursue the ACCA program in Singapore. However, after taking a part-time job at a hotel while waiting for the program to begin, I discovered a passion for the hospitality industry. This led me to shift my focus and pursue a career in culinary arts within hospitality. I started as a kitchen helper and worked my way up to become an Executive Chef. From there, I transitioned into roles such as Food and Beverage Director, Resort Manager, Hotel Manager, and General Manager, and currently hold the position of Group General Manager. My career spans over 33 years, I started out in Malaysia and then worked in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines. I have also had the privilege of working in Seychelles and the UK before my current role in the Maldives. Throughout my career, I have had the chance to work with esteemed companies such as IHG, Hilton, Minor International, Mauritius, Shangri-La Group, and Berjaya Hotels & Resorts, while gaining invaluable experience managing teams and operations in different cultural contexts.

Tell us more about Madifushi Private Island. How does it differentiate itself from other luxury properties in the Maldives?

Madifushi Private Island is a unique and exclusive private island that aims to provide its guests with an unparalleled experience. The resort’s focus is on creating a serene, rejuvenating, and relaxing environment that allows guests to re-energize and unwind from their busy lifestyles. The resort does not categorize itself as a luxury property, as luxury can be easily replaced. Instead, Madifushi emphasizes the importance of letting nature take over and allowing guests to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life. Guests come to Madifushi to cool down and experience a sense of tranquillity that they cannot find elsewhere.

You have been in the industry for a very long time now, as you said, 33 years. What do you think is the key to providing good hospitality?

Providing great hospitality involves several key factors. Firstly, it is crucial to have a customer-centric mindset, where the needs and preferences of the guests are at the forefront of every decision made. Building and maintaining strong relationships with guests is also important in creating a welcoming and personalized experience. Attention to detail is another vital element, where every aspect of the guest experience, from the quality of the amenities to the presentation of the food, must be carefully considered. Good communication skills, including active listening and effective problem-solving, are also essential to ensuring guest satisfaction. Finally, a positive attitude and a willingness to go above and beyond to exceed guest expectations can truly set a hospitality provider apart from the rest.

In addition to the factors mentioned earlier, it is also essential for hospitality providers to have a team of staff who love what they do. When employees are passionate about their work and enjoy providing great service to guests, it translates into a positive guest experience. Providing employees with the necessary training, resources, and support to excel in their roles is crucial for ensuring their job satisfaction

and enabling them to provide excellent service. By fostering a positive work environment and encouraging employees to take pride in their work, hospitality providers can create a culture of excellence that benefits both their employees and guests.

What do you think is your greatest personal achievement?

Throughout my accomplished career in hospitality, I have had the privilege of working on several remarkable projects. I have successfully rebranded seven resorts, built two new properties, and expanded one. These projects often come with short deadlines, some as little as two months, but with hard work and dedication, I have been able to deliver exceptional results.

My most recent achievement, Madifushi Private Island, presented numerous challenges, including navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and overcoming contractor issues. However, I relished the opportunity to tackle these obstacles head-on and get things done efficiently. I am passionate about leaving my unique signature, my footprint, on all my projects, and I take immense pride in my work. My unwavering commitment to excellence and taking ownership of my tasks have led to several notable achievements in my career, and I am excited to continue making a meaningful impact in the hospitality industry.

What are the future plans you have for Madifushi Private Island?

At Madifushi Private Island, we are continuously looking for ways to enhance the guest experience and provide the ultimate luxury getaway. With our current island spanning 16.8 hectares and having only 80 villas, we plan to expand our facilities with an additional 80 villas or fewer. Our focus is on creating comfortable spaces that promote exclusivity, privacy, and tranquillity, providing guests with the ultimate escape from their busy lives.

Furthermore, we are planning to develop a small nearby island that will serve as a romantic getaway for couples and honeymooners. This new development will offer an exclusive experience, complete with personalized service and unique amenities that cater to the needs of our discerning guests. We are committed to providing an exceptional stay for our guests and are excited about these future plans, which will only enhance the already unparalleled experience at Madifushi Private Island.

Do you have any words of advice for those who want to excel in this industry?

Always put yourself in the shoes of your guests. It’s important to understand the needs and expectations of the guests and to anticipate their desires even before they are expressed. This requires being attentive, empathetic, and always willing to go the extra mile to exceed their expectations. Another important aspect is to focus on creating a memorable experience for the guests. This can be achieved through attention to detail, personalised service, and offering unique and authentic experiences. It’s also crucial to maintain a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and adapt to changes in the industry.

Lastly, I would advise aspiring hospitality professionals to cultivate a passion for the industry and never stop striving for excellence. Success in this field requires dedication, hard work, and a genuine love for serving and satisfying guests.

I am very proud to say that I have only worked for Marriott International in my entire career and I started the day after I finished university. When starting my journey, my first job was as a trainee pool attendant when I joined Marriott International in 1998 in the Food and Beverage department, followed by a stint in Rooms Division before venturing into Sales & Marketing and then rising through the ranks to become General Manager for various hotels throughout Europe. I moved to Asia in July 2015 as Market Vice President for South East Asia and India for The Ritz-Carlton, The Edition and Bvlgari Hotels and Resorts. In December 2016, I was appointed as Market Vice President for three notable markets in the continent – Singapore, Malaysia, and the Maldives, and promoted to my current role as Area Vice President in March 2018.

Can you share some insights on the current state of the hospitality industry in the Maldives?

I think the Maldives, through years of history, has set up a strong foundation for running the tourism industry. The country is a pioneer of tourism around the world and has done an excellent job of maintaining its status as an aspirational destination. This is credited to the country’s natural beauty and the hard work of all the people in this industry. While there are more destinations opening up around the world, I am still optimistic about the future of business in the Maldives. I believe that once people have explored other places, they will

inevitably return to the Maldives. It is a timeless destination with many people dreaming of visiting the Maldives at some point in their lives. I have heard the phrase ‘One day I want to go to the Maldives’ so many times.

Tell us about your experience in managing multiple properties and ensuring their profitability

At Marriott International, we use different KPIs to measure our operations. These include revenue, market share, guest experience, and stakeholder partnerships. We prioritise making our stakeholders happy and ensuring obvious returns on investment when opening new hotels.

Profitability is also crucial for our business, and we need to have expertise in understanding the market and partnering with local providers. Without profitability, there can be no revenues. Therefore, we prioritise positioning ourselves well and doing a good job to attract guests to our hotels. We then adjust our business model without compromising the guest experience and expectations, as they are the ones who bring in the business. Although operating resources have changed significantly in the past two years, with increased costs in areas such as electricity and food, we strive to ensure long-term sustainability in our operations. We put in efforts and focus on bringing returns on investment that satisfy stakeholders without compromising the guest experience.

What is your leadership style and how it has contributed to your success so far?

When I get into a new role, the first thing I do is observe and my priority is human capital which means the associates that work for us are of the utmost importance I’m not able to understand how much potential we have if I don’t understand the team around me and make sure that each of the associates is set up to be successful and focus on their strengths.

People form the bedrock of any organization and we must embrace a mindset of tapping the unique strengths and experiences of their people to truly grow. Different perspectives can spark creativity, and innovation and help organizations spot and seize new opportunities. I enjoy developing talent and people. I always keep in mind that someone gave me an opportunity to grow and that I would like to do the same for others. It is also my duty to make sure I develop the talent I have with me and to prepare the pipeline of general managers for the company’s future. We have to listen to make the best decisions and be fair. We, at Marriott, put people first and I try to guide and follow these principles.

Do you have any advice for those eager to join the hospitality industry?

I’m an advocate for anyone willing to join this industry. I always believe that we have the responsibility to encourage and transmit the passion of the business to others. And if anyone is joining, or thinking to consider joining the industry, I think it’s extremely important that they visualise themselves and dream big. Because in this industry you can do whatever you want. You just need to make sure that you go with a company that follows the values and principles that are similar to yours, and then allow them to guide you, teach you, and educate you on the business.

Rainer Steinhilber

General Manager at Amari Raaya Maldives

Well-seasoned hotelier, Rainer Steinhilber is no stranger to the Maldivian hospitality industry. Before settling down in the island nation, Rainer held multiple positions in various countries across the globe. In this interview, Rainer Steinhilber spoke with us about his professional journey and his vision for his newest project, Amari Raaya Maldives. Amari’s second property in the Maldives, Amari Raaya Maldives in Raa Atoll is set to open in Q2 2023.

Could you tell us a bit about your career thus far?

I arrived in the Maldives in 2007, so I have spent the last 15 years here, in various resort management roles. Before that, I worked in France, the USA, North Africa and of course, my home country of Germany. The Maldives is such a unique destination and I feel lucky every day to be able to work and live. It sounds like such a cliché, but I literally have fallen in love with this beautiful country and its people. I met my wife Shafiyya here, so I truly consider the Maldives to be my home.

Tell us more about Amari Raaya and its various offerings. What has your pre-opening experience there been like?

Amari Raaya will become ONYX Hospitality Group’s second property in the Maldives when it opens in Q2 this year. Our private island resort will occupy a secluded island in Raa Atoll, accessible by seaplane directly to the resort, or via domestic flight to nearby Ifuru Airport.

Positioned as a family-oriented resort, Amari Raaya Maldives will bear all the signature offerings that you would expect from a 5-star luxury resort. The 37-hectare island consists of 186 villas, including 60 over-water villas, and 40% of all villas feature their own pool. Some of our beach villas will be connected and will offer 2-bedrooms for those families or groups of friends staying together. A total of seven food and beverage outlets are on offer, ranging from Asian-fusion cuisine to a casual Italian restaurant, an all-day dining restaurant at the beach, a village café, a pool bar, a beach shack and a mobile truck catering for all culinary tastes and dining styles.

Additionally, special curated private dining will be available at unique locations around the resort, on the beach, and in the jungle, and a special star gazing tree top dining experience. Other resort features include the Maai Spa Wellness Oasis, a kid’s club with a huge outdoor playground including a zip line, a dive and water sports center, a main pool and kid’s pool, gym and yoga deck as well as sports activities such as football court, badminton court, paddle tennis and a mini golf course. We also invite our guests for activities and excursions by boat. Another island highlight will be our rooftop sunset lounge bar, where guests can kick back, and enjoy magnificent sunsets accompanied by the chill tunes of our DJ and sundowner cocktails.

As this is not my first pre-opening experience, I do know what an incredible effort it takes to not only build a resort from scratch but to basically transform a sandy island into a small world that can inspire and wow our guests. It’s a tough and long journey with many obstacles along the way, but ultimately at the end, I know I will be very proud to have been part of such an extraordinary group of people, who have all contributed their skills, (some sweat) and hard physical work to achieve something quite extraordinary – a secluded paradise to make people happy, for guests and team members alike.

I am also grateful to our owners of Panchshil Realty and to the corporate management of ONYX Hospitality Group, for entrusting me with the leading role of opening this exciting resort and I am beyond excited to showcase this new Maldivian resort to the world soon.

In your opinion, how will Amari Raaya set itself apart from other similar luxury properties in the Maldives?

We have created a unique story concept behind Amari Raaya that sets an intriguing ambience all around the island for our guests to explore.

The resort features design elements and experience touchpoints inspired by a fictitious castaway explorer named Sebastian, an artist and amateur sailor who was shipwrecked and lived alone on the island for eight years before allowing himself to be discovered. Amari Raaya Maldives will immerse travellers in a reinterpretation of the legacy he left behind through a series of structures, shelters and landmarks Sebastian creatively constructed from island-sourced raw materials and flotsam washed ashore over the years.

Highlights include an upturned dhoni shipwreck hidden within a jungle, abandoned watchtowers, and in our ‘Artists Zone’, Sebastian’s rustic home and huts will be showcasing Maldivian arts and cafts as well as featuring local artists and a discovery walkway within the mangroves area to be explored with guided explanations of the Maldivian fauna and flora. Our guests will find a beautiful natural island full of discoveries, not everything can be revealed, but let me just say this: On the island, you will get a glimpse into the world of a survivor and artist as you immerse yourself in the buildings and objects created by Seb during his life as a castaway.

What’s your greatest personal achievement?

As an island GM, I see my achievements are only representative of the team I lead. Sharing the limelight is important to me, as the biggest achievements can only be reached together. When you live on an island resort it’s important to create an atmosphere of trust and respect and ultimately of happiness amongst your team. This feeling of harmony filters down to the service and experience that our guests receive. If you reach that level, then you are doing well. For me. that is the biggest achievement and I look forward to creating it again here at Amari Raaya Maldives.

What do you foresee for the Maldivian hospitality industry in the future?

The Maldives government together with the Maldivian hospitality Industry and all its stakeholders have shown exemplary actions on how to overcome the COVID-19 crisis over the past few years and the country is recognized as a safe destination. Additionally, over the last 10 years, the segmentation of travellers from pure luxury and honeymooners has been complemented by family travellers and we have seen a strong impact from new emerging markets to the destination such as India, Russia and the Middle East. Europe remains traditionally strong and China will make a comeback for sure this year.

So, all predictions are positive, it’s fair to say that the Maldives’ hospitality industry will have a great future. We have seen last December a total of 1.6 million visitors to the country for the year 2022, which is level to 2019 figures, and on top of that the Maldives has been crowned the “World’s Leading Destination” for the last three consecutive years at The World Travel Awards – all these accolades and trends combined to present a promising outlook for Maldivian hospitality.

Redesigning the Hospitality Landscape: Emerging Trends Revolutionizing the Industry in 2023

In today’s landscape, designers are presented with the task of crafting spaces that cater to a diverse and expanding demographic while delivering an exceptional and memorable experience. The trends of 2022, ranging from sustainable materials to digital workspaces, continue to influence design choices this year. Nonetheless, a few new design trends are poised to disrupt the industry and redefine the essence of hospitality design in 2023.

Integrating Sustainability and Biophilic Design

Sustainable design is becoming increasingly prevalent in the hospitality industry, evident in the use of sustainable materials like bamboo, repurposed wood, and recycled glass, as well as energy and water-efficient products. This emphasis on sustainability has also led to the emergence of the biophilia trend in hospitality design, which recognizes humans’ inherent need for nature and connections with other living beings. To create more natural, comfortable, and productive environments, designers are incorporating plants and greenery, organic shapes and materials, natural light, and even innovative technology, such as smart glass that can control the amount of light and heat entering a room.

Designers are using various tactics to craft these unique experiences, such as enlisting local artists to create murals or repurposing materials to create bespoke furniture. The economic benefits of local design movements are also attracting hoteliers, as it allows them to reduce costs while still providing guests with a memorable experience.

The Role of Soothing Colour Palettes and Earthy Tones

Modern hospitality design has shifted towards using calming, neutral colours and earthy tones, which are evident in the walls, flooring, fabrics, and furniture of many contemporary hospitality spaces. This creates a more relaxing and spacious environment that helps to reduce stress levels. By pairing rich, warm natural hues with softer neutrals, such as Pantone’s colour of the year, Viva Magenta, with Sage Green, Beige and Brown, a harmonious and laid-back atmosphere is created. The use of soft hues and earthy tones in modern hospitality design creates an inviting and comforting ambience.

Adapting Hospitality Design for the Growing Digital Nomad Market

The number of digital nomads worldwide has surged to approximately 35 million in 2022, with an astounding 49% increase in growth between 2019 and 2020. This trend is expected to continue in 2023, as remote and digital workers replace traditional short-term business and conference travellers, thus impacting hospitality design. To cater to this growing market of digital natives, hospitality operators can use strategic design to encourage them to stay longer and spend more during their stay. Simple design upgrades such as separate work and sleeping areas in rooms, increased wardrobe space, and flexible suites and adjoining rooms that can be converted into private offices, fitness rooms, or lounges, along with comfortable coworking spaces and upgraded communal areas, are effective ways for hotel operators to better cater to the needs of the digital nomad market.

Embracing Authenticity

One of the latest trends in hospitality design for 2023 is to infuse guests with the authenticity of their travel destination’s local culture. This requires integrating genuine materials and details that embody the history and customs of the surrounding community. Local touches, from the stones utilized in landscaping to the textural nuances of interior walls and furnishings, can generate a truly immersive experience that heightens the guest’s sojourn.

A prime illustration of this approach can be observed in the Maldives at Oaga Art Resort. The resort provides Maldivian-inspired dining and spa experiences, in addition to various immersive activities curated by local and visiting artisans and craftsmen. As a new entrant to the Maldivian hospitality scene, Oaga Art Resort is an all-inclusive haven that derives inspiration from the Maldives’ rich history, culture, and traditions.

Aesthetic Marvels: 7 Contemporary Resorts Pushing Design Boundaries in the Maldives

The Maldives, with its idyllic overwater villas, airbrushedlooking reefs, and sparkling waters, has become a hotbed for design. Despite the constant threat of climate change, developers are continuing to envision and create aesthetic marvels in this breathtaking region. From underwater suites to eco-friendly architecture, these resorts are redefining what it means to stay in paradise.

Here are 10 design-forward properties in the Maldives that are taking hospitality to the next level.

Patina Maldives, Fari Islands

Patina Maldives, Fari Islands is a radical new example of biophilic design from renowned Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, founder of international awardwinning Studio MK27. The design is a blend of tropical modernism and nature, set amidst the serene natural setting of the Fari Islands in the Maldives. The resort features cabins on stilts in the water, modest rectangular buildings on land, lush gardens, and plenty of open space to encourage guests to unwind and connect with nature. The focus of the design is on promoting sustainable luxury while pushing the limits of hospitality architecture.

Patina Maldives, Fari Islands

The Ritz-Carton Maldives, Fari Islands

Designed by award-winning architects Kerry Hill, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is inspired by its natural surroundings. The architects were influenced by the circular motion of water and the way of life in the Maldives, creating a design that embodies the island’s philosophy and spirit. The resort’s circular-shaped architecture, which resembles the traditional ‘bodu beru’ drum crafted from coconut wood, is also a nod to an ancient form of dance and music that dates back to the 11th century and is synonymous with celebrations and ceremonies.

Kudadoo Maldives Private Island

As the Maldives’ only solar-powered private island, Kudadoo stands out as the first fully sustainable resort, offering an exclusive and eco-friendly experience for discerning travellers. It boasts 15 Zen-style villas that encircle the island like a diadem, providing uninterrupted views of the horizon. Designed by the famous Yuji Yamazaki, the resort reflects a modern sensibility with a sustainable mindset that aims to preserve the local ecology.

42

Alila Kothaifaru Maldives

Alila Kothaifaru’s modern minimalist architecture was designed by Singapore-based Studiogoto, who took inspiration from the island’s flat topography to create an environment that blends seamlessly with nature. The landscape-oriented design features terraced layers that integrate into the natural surroundings to provide privacy and intimacy for each of the 80 beach and water villas, while also offering awe-inspiring views. By combining bold, clean lines with soft natural materials, cultural motifs, and organic forms, the architecture aims to promote relaxation and draw on the restorative powers of nature.

Kagi Maldives Spa Island

The design of this wellness oasis was crafted by renowned architect Yuji Yamazaki. It aims beyond the conventional resort and commits a unique emphasis on the wellness of the human mind and body. The resort consists of organic lines with sweeping shingled roofs in order to blend traditional design languages with modern ones. Meanwhile, the spa complex is stilted over the ocean and consists of inset ovals that contain a central suspended space. There are also 50 private villas, all with individual pools, 40 of which stilt over the ocean.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

When you think of Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, you immediately think of the Muraka. This luxurious holiday villa is a masterpiece of design collaboration between local architect Ahmed Saleem and New York-based Yuji Yamazaki. The Muraka boasts a distinct feature that sets it apart from other luxury villas — an underwater bedroom suite. The suite is encased in curved, seveninch-thick acrylic walls, allowing guests to have an aquarium-like experience and observe marine life while going about their day. The villa comprises a slender topstory above water that houses the kitchen, living and dining area, and three additional bedrooms.

The St. Regis Vommuli

In addition to the upscale resorts, there is a growing trend of incorporating locally influenced design elements into Maldivian resort architecture. The St. Regis Vommuli for example, which opened in 2016, features hanging bead lamps made from recycled shells along the veranda and a striking ceiling mural created using pyrography, a Maldivian art form of burning wood, to tell captivating stories. These design elements not only add to the aesthetics of the resorts but also showcase the rich cultural heritage of the archipelago.

Maldivian Expands Fleet with New ATR Flight

National airline and leading domestic carrier, Maldivian has expanded its fleet with the arrival of a brand new ATR42-600 aircraft.

The airline had also taken delivery of two ATR 72-600 series aircraft earlier this year. The order for the turboprop aircraft was placed in January 2022 at a reported cost of USD 60 million (MVR 925 million) which is being financed through a loan.

The addition of these new aircraft is part of a fleet overhaul that will see the airline replace its ageing Dash8 fleet with ATRs over the next few years. The decision to switch to ATRs was made as the De Havilland Dash8s are no longer in production.

With the arrival of the third ATR, Maldivian will have a total of six ATR aircraft in its fleet. The airline plans to add three more ATRs by the end of 2023, a move that will enhance the travel experience for its passengers.

This fleet expansion comes as Maldivian looks to grow its operations and offer greater connectivity to its customers. The airline currently operates scheduled services to 12 destinations in the Maldives and international destinations in South Asia and the Middle East. With the addition of more ATRs, Maldivian hopes to expand its network and improve its services to meet the demands of its growing customer base.

Ritz-Carlton Maldives Expands their Environmental Programming with Jean-Michel Cousteau

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands is developing its environmental programming in its continued work with world-renowned oceanographic explorer and environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau. The resort, celebrated for sustainable infrastructure, will introduce new activities to its Ambassadors of the Environment program, starting with its youngest guests.

The exclusive initiative is led by Jean-Michel Cousteau, a team of marine naturalists and leading global scientists, to provide unique experiences with the preservation of our planet at its core. Guests can explore the ocean depths in the legacy of the great Cousteaus and join newly formed research teams in their work to monitor the ocean habitat with drone technology. The program invites guests to discover and engage in the natural world, and to understand how their actions can help preserve it for future generations.

New additions for the resort’s junior guests in 2023 will include:

An Expedition of Microplastic

An in-depth look into everything involved in plastics and how this affects us. Junior guests will take to the beach and capture sand samples for further exploration. The budding scientists will take their fieldwork back to base where with the use of microscopes will learn about microplastics, how they impact life in the ocean and the cycle of that journey to humans.

Little Conservationists

A hands-on activity including a wide variety of science experiments and games to investigate the incredible properties of water. Learning why water is fun, strange and essential. Kids will get hands-on and a little wet while they explore the amazing molecule of water, the water cycle, how humans are harming water systems and what we can do to protect this precious resource.

Aquatic Micro World

Back out in the field, junior guests will join Jean-Michel Cousteau’s marine scientists to discover the microworld of organisms living in the ocean. Using special nets to collect plankton at the water’s edge, it’s back to the microscopes to learn more about these stunning little creatures up close and personal.

During Cousteau’s latest visit, the explorer was able to share with guests and the resort community findings from three newly discovered dive sites. Activities included locating a discarded fishing net and assisting with its removal, to the discovery of a gestation site for a congregation of nurse sharks. In addition to a series of inspired talks, Q&As and hosted dives for the guests of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, Cousteau and the resort team spent time with children and students at the Dhiffushi School on a neighbouring island. Through sharing his story,

86

latest work and research, Cousteau aims to excite the region’s future generations to champion the preservation of the natural world.

Cousteau comments: “Introducing the Ambassadors of the Environment program to The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands was a dream come true. I’m honoured and proud that guests of all ages are able to participate in cutting-edge programming curated by our naturalists. We aim to inspire and motivate people to appreciate the importance of protecting the nature that keeps our planet habitable, for us and all other species. Our message is always the same – protect our natural resources.”

“The health and richness of the coral reefs and the sustainable infrastructure of The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands makes this one of the most exciting and impactful programs we have ever created.”

The program’s knowledge-share aims to influence guests and communities to live more sustainably with the belief that the world’s biggest investment in sustainability is in the planet’s youngest inhabitants.

Pontiac Land Acquires First Green Loan in Maldives for Development of Fari Islands

Singapore-based developer and investor in luxury hospitality projects, Pontiac Land, has secured a $120 million green loan from DBS Bank to fund the development of its latest project, the Fari Islands. The green loans cover two resorts — Patina Maldives, Fari Islands and The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands.

Pontiac Land obtained its inaugural green loan, with the support of DBS, HSBC, and UOB as Green Structuring Banks. This event also signifies the first green loan for DBS and UOB in the Maldives, as well as the first for HSBC in the Maldives’ hotel industry. This momentous achievement confirms Pontiac Land’s dedication to constructing a more environmentally-friendly future that will benefit future generations.

The conversion of the loan became feasible after achieving the EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) Advanced Certifications, which demonstrates that the resort is prepared for zero carbon emissions. In a departure from the conventional thatched roof structures, which are prevalent in the Maldives, the villas and other amenities at Fari Islands have flat roofs, enabling the instalment of solar panels. Some of the amenities at Fari Islands have now become 100% solar-powered. Pontiac is exploring more renewable energy solutions.

Guests at the resort can also participate in marine conservation and sustainability through partnerships and creative guest programming aimed at coral propagation, turtle rehabilitation, ecological research, and the reuse of marine plastic. The resort has an organic permaculture garden that grows pesticide-free produce while turning food waste into organic fertilisers using bio-digesters. Fari Islands houses Roots, a signature plant-based restaurant that operates on a root-to-leaf principle and encourages guests to adopt a more conscious lifestyle.

Pontiac Land’s latest project in the Maldives sets a benchmark for sustainable development in the hospitality industry, highlighting the growing trend among investors and developers to prioritize sustainability. With a commitment to responsible development and green finance initiatives, Pontiac Land and DBS Bank demonstrate the power of sustainable business practices to create meaningful impact while still delivering a world-class luxury guest experience.

Noo Raajje Scientist Joins National Geographic Pristine Seas Scientific Expedition of Maldives

Noo Raajje scientist Maeesha Mohamed joined the National Geographic Pristine Seas scientific expedition which embarked to gather scientific information with the aim of filling data gaps in ongoing efforts to develop Maldives’ Marine Spatial Plan. The expedition travelled to Huvadhoo Atoll, Fuvahmulah and Addu aboard Blue Force Three and conducted a variety of scientific surveys that will build upon information gathered during previous Noo Raajje expeditions. The data and research from this expedition will help inform a longterm plan to protect marine life and support sustainable development in the Maldives.

Maeesha joined a stellar line-up of local and international scientists and ocean experts such as expedition leader Dr Keiron Fraser of the University of Plymouth, expedition chief scientist Dr Alan Friedlander and local marine biologist Aya Naseem. Together, they used sampling methods such as Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVs), deep drop-camera surveys, and micro-paleo and microplastic sampling to determine the health of south Maldives ocean ecosystems.

Following the expedition, the team produced a scientific report and a short video detailing their findings. This information will complement data already collected by Noo Raajje from previous expeditions, its Ocean Use Survey and numerous public and stakeholder consultations towards drafting the country’s Marine Spatial Plan. Additionally, the expedition team conducted a live online educational talk and Q&A session aboard the expedition vessel for Maldivian students and youth.

“This expedition will help us expand our knowledge about the marine ecosystems of the Maldives, which will be crucial for the continuation of our efforts to manage marine resources. This is also an opportunity for Maldivians to learn more about our environment and elevate our appreciation and love for the ocean,” said Minister of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan.

“I am thrilled to join this expedition that will not only help us gather valuable data about the marine health of the southern atolls, but also help better identify areas that need to be protected. Expeditions like this reinforce the scientific basis for protecting marine areas and help the government design science-backed policy,” said Noo Raajje Science & Communications Liaison Maeesha Mohamed.

Dr Alan Friedlander, National Geographic Pristine Seas Chief Scientist, said: “The National Geographic Pristine Seas team has worked all over the world to protect some of the most vital places in the ocean. This is our first expedition to the Maldives and an amazing opportunity to learn more about the unique ecosystems in the southern atolls. Our team is excited to support the goals of the Noo Raajje partnership to protect and value the ocean and its resources to build a bright future for communities, the economy, and the environment of the Maldives.”

Sun Siyam Resorts Embraces Sustainability in Support of Earth Day 2023 to “Invest in our Planet”

In line with this year’s international Earth Day theme, “Invest in our Planet”, and to demonstrate support for environmental protection, Sun Siyam Resorts is reflecting its values at the heart of the company and is dedicated to operating sustainably and responsibly in the Maldives and Sri Lanka while offering authentic guest experiences.

Hence, under its sustainability programme, Sun Siyam Cares, the various island resorts carried out several environmental and sustainability efforts as well as guest activities in support of Earth Day 2023, from tree planting ceremonies to reef, beach, and lagoon cleaning sessions, marine biology talks, and pledging ceremonies.

However, environmental efforts are not just for celebrations but part of an everyday effort to conserve our island homes and facilitate a better world. This is evident at Sun Siyam Vilu Reef, as you snorkel spotting some of the best coral reefs in the Maldives and also a thriving coral garden resulting from coral planting efforts throughout the past five years. The island team has taken huge steps towards preserving the future of our planet as they pledged to plant 5000 trees in the next three years.

At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi the island team and numerous guests planted a total of 100 trees on Earth Day 2023, making it a total of 247 trees a year to date, and bringing the island team one step closer to reaching their goal of 1000 trees in 2023.

Guests at Siyam World Maldives joined the islandbased, local marine biologist Thuhu and the island team for a special island cleaning event in the morning, where everyone could actively “make a difference” and leave the stunning Maldives knowing that they had the experience of a lifetime, but also made an impact.

The Sun Siyam Cares programme prioritizes sustainability through initiatives such as reducing energy and water use, managing waste to reduce plastic use, supporting community development, and investing in renewable energy.
