In 2024, the Maldives welcomed its two millionth tourist, marking a major milestone in the country’s tourism industry. This achievement reflects the destination’s enduring charm and global appeal as it continues to attract travellers from all over the world.
Tourism in the Maldives has experienced a remarkable boost in 2025, with the Ministry of Tourism reporting 582,925 tourist arrivals as of 24 March 2025, surpassing half a million. January 2025 brought 214,863 tourists to the Maldives, while 214,091 visitors arrived in February 2025.
With an average of 7,023 tourists arriving each day, the statistics show a 4.4% increase from the same period last year, which saw 558,236 arrivals, and a significant rise from the 488,371 arrivals recorded in the same timeframe in 2023.
China remains the largest source of tourism for the Maldives, contributing 12% of total arrivals with 69,905 tourists. Russia follows in second place, accounting for 10.6% of arrivals, or 61,583 visitors, while the United Kingdom holds third place, with 59,690 arrivals making up 10.2% of the market share. These key markets reflect the Maldives’ broad international appeal.
In a major development for the aviation sector, Maldivian, the national airline, has inaugurated its first wide-body operations with the arrival of the Airbus A330-200. This new aircraft enhances the airline’s longhaul flight capabilities, enabling it to expand its reach

to key destinations in Europe and South Africa. With increased passenger capacity and extended range, the A330-200 will support Maldivian’s international routes and meet the rising demand for travel between the Maldives and major tourism markets like China.
The Maldives aims to welcome 2.2 million tourists by the end of this year. This ambitious target aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to boost tourism and is supported by key initiatives such as the expansion of Velana International Airport (VIA), which will enhance the travel experience and accommodate increased
passenger numbers.
Additionally, the Maldives is set to welcome several new luxury resorts in 2025, further diversifying its offerings and attracting more visitors. This year, the JW Marriott Kaafu Atoll Island Resort opened its doors in February, followed by Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, set to launch in April 2025. Other upcoming additions include Villa Haven, Ananea Madivaru Maldives, Corinthia Maldives, and Dusit D2 Feydhoo Maldives, all of which are expected to open soon. Further enhancing the country’s luxury offerings, Mandarin
Oriental Bolidhuffaru Reef and Rah Gili Maldives, part of the exclusive SIX & SIX PRIVATE ISLANDS collection, are also all slated to open later this year, bringing even more sophistication to the Maldives’ hospitality scene. With ongoing infrastructure improvements and a focus on high-end hospitality, the Maldives continues to strengthen its position as a leading global destination.

In this exclusive interview, Agustín Pérez, one of the youngest General Managers in the Maldives, reflects on his journey to leading Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives, the flagship resort of the Barceló Group. From starting as a room service waiter in London to overseeing a resort in one of the world’s most soughtafter destinations, Agustín’s career has been built on passion, hard work, and dedication. His extensive experience across Europe and the Middle East has prepared him to embrace the unique challenges of managing an island resort in the Maldives.
Agustín also delves into his leadership approach, emphasising the importance of personalised guest service and fostering a dynamic team that is passionate about delivering exceptional experiences. With a strong vision for the future, he shares how he plans to elevate Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives with a focus on innovation, service excellence, and creating lasting memories for every guest who visits.
Could you walk us through your journey and the experiences that shaped your rise to becoming a General Manager at such a young age? What were the most significant challenges and milestones in your career?
My journey has been long but incredibly exciting. My passion for the hotel industry began in London as a room service waiter, where I was captivated by the General Manager’s presence and ease with guests and staff. That moment inspired me to follow the same path, leading me through roles in housekeeping, reception, and sales.
I started as an Assistant General Manager at Barceló Lanzarote Active Resort in the Canary Islands. After training, I became a Guest Experience Manager while the company selected leadership candidates. Soon after, I moved to Dubai as Assistant General Manager for the pre-opening of Occidental Dubai Production City, linked to Expo Dubai, and spent a year there post-opening. I then transferred to Barceló Illetas Albatros, Majorca, as Deputy General Manager, spending nearly three years navigating COVID-19 challenges. Afterwards, I became a Resident Manager at Barceló Istanbul, where I spent three amazing years. Those were some of my happiest moments, as I had the chance to experience hospitality in its truest form and learn immensely. Following years of learning and growth, I was offered the role of General Manager at Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives, where I am currently based.
I believe Barceló and I are a perfect match, sharing the same vision of hospitality. The company offers great growth opportunities, including the management program I was part of, but it also requires strong commitment—one I was happy to take on. Investing
in my future led me to the role of General Manager at Barceló Whale Lagoon. Being one of the youngest General Managers in the Maldives is something I’m proud of, but it also comes with great responsibility— one I’m more than ready for.
Given that this is your first role in the Maldives, how did the destination appeal to you initially, and what unique qualities of Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives made you eager to be part of the team?
When I received the offer to join Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives, what appealed to me was the opportunity to manage an entirely isolated island resort, a completely different experience from the hotels I had managed before. All operations are handled on-site, with a strong focus on environmental sustainability. This was a huge challenge, but one I was excited to take on.
Coming to the Maldives was also a huge opportunity, as it’s an award-winning destination. I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of staying in water villas, where you can wake up and literally dive straight into the ocean. As someone passionate about the ocean, being in a place where I can have whale sharks as neighbours and witness some of the world’s most beautiful marine species made this opportunity even more exciting.
And, of course, Barceló Whale Lagoon is the Barceló Hotel Group’s flagship resort in the Maldives. It’s one of the most important projects of the company right now, and the whole team is dedicated to its success. As General Manager, it’s a real privilege to be part of this and something I’m incredibly proud of.
As a newly opened resort, what challenges do you expect at Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives, and how will you address them to ensure its success?
We definitely face challenges when it comes to sustainability. More and more, guests are looking for hotels that are not just eco-friendly but actively working to make a positive impact on the environment. At Barceló Whale Lagoon, this is one of our top priorities. Our goal isn’t just to leave the environment as we found it but to make it better for future generations. To achieve this, we work closely with numerous associations dedicated to protecting whale sharks and ensuring the preservation of our natural resources. We also take great care in managing the plastic waste we generate and in minimising our environmental footprint overall. We constantly strive to ensure that sustainability is woven into every aspect of our operations.
In your opinion, what are the key developments at the Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives, and how do you plan to take advantage of them?
From November 2024, Barceló Whale Lagoon has switched to an all-inclusive package for all guests. So now, anyone staying at the hotel gets to enjoy the full all-inclusive experience. We also have the ‘All-Inclusive Plus’ option, which gives access to premium brands. The hotel is currently being adapted to fit this new setup so guests can fully enjoy all the activities and services available.
Coming from the Barceló group, where large resorts around the world offer all-inclusive packages as a standard, we’re confident this change will help us stand out. Of course, it will come with some challenges, but we’re really excited about the positive difference it will make for our guests.
What makes Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives unique within the Barceló Hotel Group portfolio, and how do you differentiate this resort from others in the Maldives?
Barceló is a globally renowned brand with a strong presence in the Caribbean, particularly in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. As a Spanish company, we are well known in Europe, having started in Mallorca and expanded to the Canary Islands. In the Maldives, Barceló Lagoon is our flagship resort, offering the exciting challenge of introducing the brand and showcasing our hospitality to the world. This is a key focus for us right now—sharing our hospitality and unique approach with the world.
What truly sets Barceló Whale Lagoon apart from other resorts is our guest-first philosophy. Everything we do is designed to create experiences that bring joy and leave lasting memories. From our food and activities to the design of our rooms, we ensure every detail is carefully crafted to make our guests’ stay unforgettable. Our goal is for guests to leave with happy memories and to remember Barceló Lagoon as a place where they had a wonderful time.
What makes us even more special is our unique location near the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) area, one of the bestknown areas for whale shark sightings. While we can’t guarantee sightings, we are fortunate to spot these incredible creatures almost every day. This rare and special experience truly distinguishes us from other resorts in the Maldives.
How do you plan to integrate the local culture and community into the guest experience at the resort?
We’re fortunate at the hotel to have local team members who are eager to share the rich culture of the Maldives with our guests. One of the ways we celebrate this is through Bodu Beru performances, showcasing the traditional drumming, music, and rhythms of the Maldives. Staff from various departments come together to present these performances, offering a complete cultural experience. When guests first arrive at the resort, they are welcomed with the powerful sounds of the Bodu Beru. It’s a heartfelt gesture from our side, demonstrating our hospitality and making them feel welcome.
Beyond the Bodu Beru performances, we further immerse our guests in the Maldivian experience through our culinary offerings. We dedicate an entire evening to Maldivian cuisine, allowing our guests to savour the authentic flavours of the Maldives. This special night features a carefully curated menu of traditional dishes to ensure an unforgettable culinary experience.
As a General Manager, in what ways do you motivate and inspire your team to create memorable, engaging experiences for guests every day?
At Barceló Whale Lagoon, we take pride in the trust our guests place in us. It’s not just about offering a place to stay but about curating an experience that leaves them with memories they’ll treasure. The greatest compliment we can receive is knowing that we’ve made a meaningful impact on their journey.
At Barceló Whale Lagoon, our main focus is creating unforgettable experiences for our guests. As General Manager, it’s not just about managing the office; it’s equally important for me to be out there, engaging with our guests. I believe that connecting with them, understanding what they enjoy, and learning about their individual preferences allows us to tailor their experience and constantly improve the quality of service we provide.
On a personal level, I believe it’s important to encourage everyone to bring their passions and talents into the resort, as we all have something unique to offer. For me, music is a big part of who I am, and being a DJ is one of my favourite things to do. It’s such a special part of my week because I get to share my love for music with our guests. It also allows me to connect with them and our team on a deeper level, showing that it’s okay to step outside our comfort zones and be more authentic. I always encourage my team to do the same—whether it’s sharing their talents or just enjoying what they love. When guests experience that kind of genuine energy, it creates something truly special that leaves a lasting impression.
What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone starting out in hospitality management?
Anyone who wants to grow in the hospitality industry needs to have a deep passion for it. It’s about more than just a job—it’s about loving the process of making others happy. At the end of the day, hospitality is all about creating unforgettable experiences and lasting memories for those who trust us with their time. If you’re passionate, eager to travel the world, and open to learning about different cultures, then hospitality is the right place for you. But, above all, commitment and a dedication to success are the true keys to thriving in this industry.

Niyama Private Islands Maldives has unveiled another world-first, with an exquisite new tasting menu at its underwater restaurant, Subsix, that brings the intrigue of Japanese-Peruvian haute cuisine to the Maldives.
Subsix, so named for its spectacular setting half a kilometre out to sea and six metres below the surface, has been the venue for novel experiences, from champagne breakfasts to midnight glow parties, since its inception over a decade ago. Surrounded by a wall of glass, sun-dappled corals, a rainbow of anemones and butterfly fish, and the occasional reef shark swimming by, each moment underwater is magical—a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Always innovating and avant-garde, Subsix launches a new Nikkei tasting menu that is as spectacular as its setting. Marrying Japanese tradition and precision with Peruvian boldness and artistry, the five courses showcase the riches of the surrounding Indian Ocean with sustainably sourced ingredients presented in a modern, playful manner. Highlights include the scallop ceviche, which achieves the perfect balance of tang and sea salt; wahoo tartare, caught by local fishermen, with swirls of avocado and a hint of spice; and the buttery cod that melts in the mouth, contrasted perfectly with crisp asparagus. To enhance this lavish feast, guests can elevate their experience with a curated selection of sake or fine wines meticulously chosen by Head Sommelier Mayank Sharma.
Each dish has been conjured up by Executive Chef Thierry Vergnault. Trained in the classics at the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, Chef Thierry has since expanded his repertoire with positions all over the world. Chef Thierry believes that with a setting as extraordinary as Subsix, the menu must be equally exceptional, aiming to intrigue all five senses and excite the palate with every bite while proudly showcasing fresh, high-quality ingredients sourced from the surrounding waters.
There are nine restaurants and bars at Niyama under the purview of Chef Thierry, from the newly relaunched Nest, where Asian cuisine is served up in the treetops, to the jungle-inspired Tribal, offering a culinary exploration of South America and Africa, to Indian Ocean Edge, set out in the midst of the water.
