Market Overview

The Maldives welcomed 966,358 tourists through May 2025, reflecting an 8.3% increase from the same period last year and showcasing its continued appeal as a toptier destination. This growth highlights the country’s strong appeal as a leading island destination, driven by effective tourism strategies and its unique natural beauty.

In May 2025, the Maldives recorded 135,614 tourist arrivals, surpassing last year’s figures for the same month and averaging 4,375 visitors per day. Recent arrival statistics for May 2025 show that China has reclaimed its position as the leading source market for the Maldives, recording 115,802 visitors. Russia follows with 105,059 arrivals, while the United Kingdom comes in third with 98,695. Italy and Germany continue to be key European contributors, with over 70,000 arrivals each. India, the strongest South Asian market, brought in 55,431 tourists. Other notable markets include France, the United States, Switzerland, and Australia. Together, these countries reflect a balanced mix of regional and long-haul markets supporting the Maldives’ tourism growth.

The Maldives continues to grow its hospitality sector, with new resorts such as Ananea Madivaru Maldives, Centara Grand Lagoon Maldives, and Barceló Nasandhura Malé now welcoming guests. Upcoming openings like dusitD2 Feydhoo Maldives will further enhance the country’s capacity and appeal to a wider range of travellers.

Targeting 2.2 million tourists in 2025, the Maldives is moving forward confidently, driven by strong demand and favourable trends. With strengthened marketing efforts, improved infrastructure, and its distinctive

With over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry, could you describe your journey to becoming a CEO and the major challenges you encountered and overcame during this period?

I first joined Sun Siyam Resorts in 2019 as the Group Director of Business Development. In 2021, I was promoted to Vice President of Commercial, where I played a crucial role in driving the company’s growth. Prior to joining Sun Siyam, I worked with the Mauritius-based LUX* Resorts and Hotels as the Regional Director of Sales and Marketing, where I was responsible for overseeing product promotion and business development. This experience taught me the importance of strategic positioning and product development, both of which have been pivotal in my approach to growing Sun Siyam Resorts.

One of the major challenges I faced in my journey was navigating the complexities of the hospitality industry during periods of significant change, particularly during the global pandemic. However, these challenges have been valuable learning experiences that taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and teamwork. When I became the CEO of Sun Siyam Resorts in January 2023, I took on the responsibility of leading the

company through a transformative phase. A key part of my role now is ensuring that we continue to innovate and provide exceptional experiences while maintaining the core values that have defined Sun Siyam Resorts. Overcoming these challenges and focusing on both short-term goals and long-term growth has been an incredibly fulfilling journey.

Another challenge is ensuring that innovation is consistently introduced at each property without compromising the core brand values. Can you walk us through your journey with Sun Siyam Resorts, highlighting some of the key experiences and lessons that have guided you to be the General Manager for Sun Siyam Olhuveli and Assistant Group General Manager for Sun Siyam Resorts

My journey in hospitality started back in 2002 when I began as a receptionist. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of operational roles across the group, from handling airport operations to eventually managing our flagship resort. Each role has given me valuable insights into different aspects of the business, from delivering excellent service and understanding diverse cultures to embracing innovation and most importantly, learning how to empower and motivate teams. Today, I rely on all those experiences in my current role to drive performance, continually improve the guest experience, and help grow our brand in a competitive market.

With many resorts offering similar experiences, how does Sun Siyam Olhuveli differentiate itself and maintain a competitive edge in the saturated Maldives market?

What truly sets Sun Siyam Olhuveli apart is the

One of our proudest features is having the longest pool in the Maldives, a stunning 210-meter stretch that provides both relaxation and a unique visual appeal unlike anywhere else in the region. longest pool in the Maldives, and the redesigned Beach and Sunset Beach villas stem from a deep understanding of what our guests want and need: romantic escapes, innovative dining experiences, and spaces that offer something truly unique. TUI Blue Olhuveli is a reimagination of romance in the Maldives, while the 210-meter pool, the longest in the Maldives, and the redesigned beach villas focus on creating purposeful, spacious environments.

We see each project as a piece of the bigger guest experience. It’s not just about adding something new but about making sure every feature fits together and really enhances the way guests enjoy their stay. The goal is to create moments that feel special and unique so that every visit to the resort leaves a lasting impression.

With Sun Siyam Olhuveli spanning three islands and a large inventory, what strategies ensure smooth operations, high service standards, and how do you tackle the challenges?

Managing a large resort requires strong planning, teamwork, and flexibility. It’s a dynamic environment where every day presents new demands, and success relies on how well we prepare and adapt. We clearly divide responsibilities across departments, ensuring that each team member understands their role and how it contributes to the overall guest experience. In addition, we provide continuous training and development to keep our staff confident, capable, and aligned with our service standards.

This structure allows us to stay connected across all areas of the resort and respond to challenges efficiently and effectively. Clear communication and collaboration are key to maintaining smooth operations and a cohesive team environment. Of course, challenges are inevitable in an operation of this scale, but with the right mindset and a strong support system in place, we view these challenges as opportunities for growth. Each hurdle gives us a chance to improve our systems, strengthen our team, and ultimately enhance the guest experience.

As someone who oversees both group-level strategy and individual property operations, what is your role in this process, and how do you ensure that both the overall brand vision and property-specific needs are effectively aligned?

As a leader, my responsibility is to ensure each resort’s plans align with our overall group objectives. This means setting a clear direction while supporting the unique goals of each property. I work closely with our resort teams to stay true to our brand values, delivering consistent quality and authentic experiences, while also encouraging creativity that reflects the local setting and meets guest expectations. This approach allows each resort to maintain its individuality while enhancing the strength of the Sun Siyam brand.

We are proud of our Maldivian identity, which is reflected in our design, cuisine, and warm hospitality. From design to traditional flavours and heartfelt service, our roots are present in everything we do. At the same time, we aim to make every guest, no matter where they come from, feel at home and discover something meaningful in their stay.

How has the Maldives tourism landscape evolved

over the last 20 years, what trends do you foresee shaping its future, and how is Sun Siyam Olhuveli preparing for these changes?

The Maldivian tourism industry has evolved significantly over the past 20 years. While luxury remains important, today’s travellers seek more than just luxury. They are looking for meaningful experiences, personalisation, and a connection to the destination. At Sun Siyam Olhuveli, we are constantly evolving to meet these changing demands. This includes introducing new room categories designed for different types of travellers, curating unique activities that highlight both adventure and culture, embracing eco-friendly practices that reduce our environmental impact, and developing new facilities such as our 210 metre long pool, the longest in the Maldives. Every enhancement is made with the goal of enriching the guest experience while staying true to the natural beauty and spirit of the islands.

Many young professionals today are interested in working in hospitality. Based on your own career, what do you think they should focus on to build a long-term and successful career in the industry?

My advice to those starting out in this industry is simple: be open to learning and start with the basics. Hospitality is a field where foundational skills and knowledge are crucial, so take the time to understand every role thoroughly. Don’t rush through the journey, as each position, no matter how small it may seem, offers valuable lessons and insights that will shape your growth. Stay curious and remain passionate about what you do, as these qualities will drive your success and fulfillment. Above all, always treat others, whether guests, colleagues, or partners, with genuine respect and kindness. This approach not only builds strong relationships but also forms the foundation of a lasting and rewarding career in hospitality.

Could you walk us through your career journey and how it has shaped your approach to leadership and business success at Sun Siyam Resorts?

I joined Sun Siyam Resorts in 2021 as the Director of Sales & Marketing at Sun Siyam Olhuveli, where I quickly demonstrated my ability to drive business success. My performance led to a promotion in 2023 to Cluster Director of Sales & Marketing, overseeing sales activities across several key resorts. In early 2024, I was promoted again to Group Director of Sales & Marketing for Sun Siyam Resorts, managing all six properties in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. With over 18 years of experience in the industry, I have had the privilege of working at renowned resorts such as One&Only Reethi Rah, Kanuhura, Baros Maldives, and Raffles Maldives Meradhoo. Most recently, I have taken on the role of Group Director of Business Development at Sun Siyam Resorts.

For me, leadership is about responsibility. I constantly strive for personal growth and to elevate my team as we work toward business success. I take a proactive approach to staying ahead of the curve by continuously improving and innovating. In my new role as Group Director of Business Development, I’m focused on leveraging my experience to drive strategic growth for Sun Siyam Resorts, while supporting the company’s

efforts to expand into new markets and strengthen our brand presence. Leading by example and setting high standards is something I take very seriously every day.

At Sun Siyam Olhuveli, we recognise the increasing demand for experience-focused travel and the evolving preferences of modern travellers. As a resort offering three unique island concepts, we have tailored our offerings to create distinctive, immersive experiences that highlight the beauty of our surroundings, while providing customised activities such as private island excursions, cultural explorations, and wellness programs.

Additionally, the rise of “bleisure” travel has become an important consideration for us, especially as we continue to strengthen our presence in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) market. With our extensive event spaces and versatile facilities, Sun Siyam Olhuveli is well-suited to host business meetings, team-building activities, and large-scale events, while still offering guests the opportunity to unwind and enjoy the leisure side of our island experience. Sun Siyam Olhuveli has undergone a significant transformation, evolving from a mid-range 4-star resort to an upper 4-star deluxe property, now offering 5-star facilities while maintaining excellent value for money. Our recent upgrades, including new room categories, enhanced facilities, and the addition of the longest pool

in the Maldives, have redefined the guest experience. The resort now boasts a stunning beach, expansive spaces, and a variety of high-end amenities that appeal to both leisure and business travellers.

This evolution enhances Sun Siyam Resorts’ broader vision by strengthening our portfolio of multiple properties and attracting a more diverse clientele. Looking back, I would tell my younger self to embrace every challenge as an opportunity for growth. The hospitality industry is full of ups and downs, and resilience and adaptability are essential for long-term success. One of the most important lessons I have learned is to never be afraid to take risks, as they often lead to the most rewarding outcomes. I also believe in staying true to your core values, especially in an industry that thrives on relationships, trust, and delivering exceptional experiences.

For the younger generation of Maldivians aspiring to reach leadership positions, my advice is to never limit yourself. Dream big, stay persistent, and be open to growth opportunities. Creating an environment that fosters mentorship and guidance is key to nurturing the next wave of leaders. As I always remind myself, “Dreams transform into thoughts, and thoughts lead to action.” With dedication and a willingness to embrace new opportunities, success will follow.
