FOREWORD Maldives was well-known as a high-end tourism destination ever since the establishment of the industry in 1972. The tourism sector was dominated by luxury resorts for decades and Maldives gained a reputation as an expensive holiday destination due to the ultra-luxurious but limited accommodation options in the country. Permission to operate guesthouses in local islands was granted in 2009 and brought a revolution to the tourism industry in Maldives. Since then, the guesthouse sector has been one of the fastest-growing sectors in the industry. Guesthouses play an important role in Maldives tourism industry and the country’s economy. It gives the industry a chance to diversify the market, giving visitors cheaper alternative for mid-to-low market segments that result in an increase of tourist arrivals to the country. Currently, with over 600 operating guesthouses in the country, the sector accounts for over 18.7 % of the total bed capacity in Maldives. The total number of beds in operation is currently estimated to be over 10,000 beds. The figure is expected to double in the next 5 - 7 years. Encouraged by the massive influx of holidaymakers, Maldives set an ambitious target for 2020: to receive 2 million tourists. However, the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the global economy and brought the world to a standstill, Maldives being no exception. After months of containment, the world is starting to open up. In an effort to revive the hard-hit tourism industry, Maldives has reopened borders to the world from 15th July 2020 with no restrictions. The country has now set new target to welcome 850,000 tourists in 2020. As Maldives is one of the few countries to open borders to all, and being a destination consisting of properties scattered over several isolated islands, it is believed that Maldives has a unique advantage for holidaymakers looking for a safe destination to travel to. Using a phased reopening, the local island tourism sector of Maldives is set to resume operations from August 2020 onwards. Recovery is on the way and the sun will shine again on Maldives. Let’s embrace the “new normal” and move forward. It’s time. Time to visit Maldives again.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS MALDIVES?

Photography by Dynamyst

Strewn across the Indian Ocean in a double chain of twenty-six atolls filled with hundreds of small tropical islands lies one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world: The Maldives. This small island nation is made up of about 1,200 coral islands formed around natural ring-like atolls just across the equator and covers over 90,000 square kilometers directly south of India and Sri Lanka. 14

MALDIVE S

Renown the world over for its white sandy beaches and breathtaking underwater beauty, each atoll of the Maldives is made of coral reefs encircling turquoise lagoons. These reefs are among the biggest attractions the country has as they are teeming with countless species of marine creatures and underwater coral gardens. Each atoll has approximately 20 to 60 islands of which only a handful are inhabited. However, there are a few atolls that are basically just single, isolated islands. Out of the thousand or so islands, only 187 are inhabited while the other islands are used entirely for economic purposes; tourism, fishing and agriculture being the leading economic industries in the country. The Maldives is among the most low-lying countries in the world with the highest natural point, usually a small hill, having an elevation of about 2.5 meters above sealevel. While coconut palms make up the majority of the vegetation in the islands, there is a distinct difference in the

15

types of plants found in the inhabited and uninhabited islands. Inhabited islands usually have small groves of banana, papaya, drumstick, citrus, breadfruit trees and coconut palms. In the uninhabited islands you are more likely to find various types of bushes and mangroves along the beach as well as the ever present coconut trees. Marshy areas and even small to mediumsized lakes can be found on some islands. The temperature of Maldives ranges between 24 and 33°C (75.2 and 91.4 °F) throughout the year. The country experiences two seasons: the dry season associated with the winter northeast monsoon and the rainy season brought by the summer southwest monsoon. However, due to global warming, the monsoons have become less predictable each year. Suffice to say that the weather now is warm and sunny most of the year, with only the occasional rainy days regardless of which monsoon it is.

a brief history of local island tourism in maldives

Photography by Dynamyst

Local Island Tourism played a key role in the development of the Maldives’ tourism industry when it was in its infancy back in the 1970s. Even though there clearly was a demand for guesthouses while the tourist resorts were being developed, all guesthouses were abruptly and inexplicably shutdown by the Government in May 1984. The situation remained unchanged until 2008, when amendments brought to the Tourism Act in January 2008 revealed that operating guesthouses in inhabited islands of the Maldives wasn’t technically prohibited. 18

However, the avenues for actually implementing such a venture remained effectively blocked since regulations on establishing and operating guesthouses were never drafted. Later, in July the same year, the issue was raised again in the People’s Majlis and led to the passing of a resolution that allowed the operation of guesthouse services in inhabited islands of the Maldives. Yet again, even though the resolution was passed by a Majlis majority, no laws or regulations were drafted and all avenues for running guesthouses in inhabited islands of the Maldives remained shut. It wasn’t until near the end of 2009 that permission to operate

19

guesthousesin inhabited islands was granted and proposed regulations to implement such endeavors was finally approved. For those who had been waiting years to start their guesthouses, the time had finally come and there was no looking back. Despite a rocky start and lots of challenges, the pioneers of the industry strived through and by the end of 2010 there were 479 beds in 23 guesthouses in Maldives. As of now there are over 10,000 beds in 631 guesthouses in over 80 inhabited islands of the Maldives. The guesthouse industry in the Maldives is now one of the most successful and fastest growing industries in the country and the future looks very bright for everyone involved.

CULTURAL HISTORY OF MALDIVES

Photography by Dynamyst

A strong influence from various countries across the region is apparent in the culture of Maldives. No surprise as the island nation is located directly in the trading route of the Indian Ocean and have had contact with visitors and settlers from many different customs and traditions from various neighbouring countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Persia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Africa throughout history. 22

Over the years Maldivians assimilated a lot of the traditions and beliefs from these contacts and created a unique cultural identity for themselves. Today, you can find varying levels of these influences in all aspects of the Maldivian culture, language, beliefs, arts, and attitudes. Maldivians are a mixed-race and differ greatly in looks, even from one atoll to the next. The Maldivian language, Dhivehi, is used only in the Maldives but also differs in dialect in some of the atolls, especially in the south of Maldives. Dhivehi is considered an IndoEuropean language related to Singhala, the 23

language spoken in Sri Lanka. However, over the years a lot of Hindi, Arabic and even English words have been assimilated into the Dhivehi language. The Maldives is a 100% Muslim country and religion plays a very important role of the average Maldivian’s life, but the mixing of cultures is very much evident in almost all forms of Maldivian arts. For example, the local music and dance combination known as bodu-beru (literally translated to as “Big Drum) is almost indistinguishable from African drumming and tribal dancing. Maldivian sail boats, or dhoni, have a particular look

that is uniquely Maldivian but the influence of Arabian dhows and Persian sea-faring vessels are clearly felt in the overall design. Religious festivals and celebrations, such as the two Islamic Eid festivals, are celebrated all over the country and activities that take place differ greatly from region to region despite a common overall theme. Handicrafts, fine arts and architecture, mostly seen in the fine intricate details on wooden beams in holy places such as mosques, is similar to what is found in Southeast Asian countries. However, some designs, such as the geometric and swirling designs used in

mat weaving and the embroidery of the neckline of women’s traditional dresses and ornaments are unique to Maldives. The beautiful lacquer-work, usually painted in black, red and yellow, is a dying art form in the country but efforts are being made to revitalize interest in the craft. Many of these works of art, including miniature dhonis and lacquer-work can be found in souvenir shops at resorts and in Male’ for sale.

GETTING AROUND IN THE MALDIVES

Photography by Dynamyst

If this is your first time in Maldives, your point of entry will most likely be the Velana International Airport (VIA) in the island of Hulhule. Depending on the travel plans you’ve made, you’re going to have to catch a boat or seaplane ride to get to your actual destination. As a country of more than 1192 islands and islets divided into 20 atolls encompassing a territory of over roughly 90,000 square kilometres (34,749 sq mi), the only possible modes of transport are by sea and air. Resorts will already have your sea or air transfer ready when you arrive at the airport and you’ll most likely be using a speedboat transfer to the resort if it is near to the airport. If your resort is located in one of the more distant atolls you’ll most likely get to enjoy the beauty of the Maldives from a bird’s viewpoint as you fly to your destination in one of the seaplanes. 26

Velana International Airport is one of the four international airports in the Maldives. Then there are seven domestic airports. However, it should be noted that the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport and Male’ is the central hub of all travel within the country. Male’ city is 10 minutes away from Velana International Airport by ferry. In Male’, there are plenty of taxis available to whisk you and your luggage away to wherever you want. Travelling to a tourist resort, hotel or safari cruise is also available from Male’ and the airport. If your destination happens to be a tourist resort, hotel, or safari cruise, then airport representative or resort staff will pick you up upon arrival and guide you through the process of getting to your sea or air transfer.

27

Resorts located farther away from Male’ will most likely use seaplane transfers for their guests. The seaplanes travel at relatively low altitudes compared to the bigger planes and allows you to get a closer aerial view of the beauty of the Maldives. In contrast, the speedboat service is a different kind of adventure altogether. Depending on the weather, you could be in for a smooth or a rough and fun time as the speedboat tackles the blue waters while you enjoy the sun on your face and the wind through your hair. Then there’s the dhoni, the name given to any of the various designs of local seafaring vessels. It offers a slower and gentler ride compared to the speedboat, but is no less of an experience.

35

The world’s biggest passenger submarine is available to take you down to the beautiful underwater paradise of the Maldives. A truly unique experience not to be missed and highly recommended for every tourist to the Maldives. What makes this submarine trip unique is not that you get to see many of the fantastic marine creatures that inhabit the Maldivian sea up close, but the fact that the operators of the trip have arranged an underwater circus for the passengers to enjoy

as they gaze out through the portholes of the submarine. Watch as divers interact with the various marine life around the sub, feeding and playing with them. Gasp in awe as a playful giant moray eel comes out from the reef it calls home to swim and play around with the divers, even letting them pet and feed it. Catching sight of a turtle or shark is also very possible.

3

SNORKELLING Snorkelling is a good alternative to diving for those who do not want to go through the hassle of learning to dive and getting familiar with the equipment. Just put on a snorkel and you’re good to go. Maldives lagoons are so clear and abundant with rich marine life that even a short snorkelling trip just a few feet away from the beach over the house reef will yield unbelievable wonders and sights to enjoy.

4

5

WATER SPORTS SUNSET & DOLPHIN CRUISE Every tourist resort in the Maldives has a Water Sports Center and the same is true for almost every island that operates guesthouses in the Maldives. These offer various activities for the guests but the basic activities available usually are snorkelling, windsurfing, banana riding, kayaking, and jet skiing. However, some Water Sports Centers also offer the more thrilling catamaran sailing, parasailing, kite-surfing and even Flyboards (Iron Manstyle water jet-pack) and the Subwing (the personal submarine that lets you “fly” through the water.

Take the chance to enjoy stunning Maldivian sunset out on the high seas with a glass of sparkling wine and dolphins to guide your way. Don’t forget to take your cameras, as there’s always a chance to bump into some friendly dolphins who are more than willing to put on a show for you.

COME FALL IN LOVE WITH THE ENCHANTED ISLANDS OF LAAMU

Photography by Dynamyst

From the moment you land at Kadhoo Domestic Airport, you will be greeted all around by thick lush foliage, with sudden glimpses of the ocean blues through the greenery. At this point, you could be forgiven for thinking that Laamu is just like many of the numerous inhabited islands in Maldives. It isn’t. 52

THE ROADS LESS TRAVELED

THE ENCHANTED FORESTS

Laamu is very different from the other islands in Maldives, and one of the first things you’ll notice are the roads. The long highways, surrounded on both sides by tall palm trees as far as the eye can see is uniquely Laamu; you won’t see such a scene anywhere else in Maldives. Cruising down Link Road, which connects four different islands, you will be awestruck by the rulerstraight roads that occasionally turn into sinuous bends.

On a good day, the forest on each side of the roads is like a scene out of a fairytale, enticing you to come feel the magic in the very air that surrounds you, compelling you to run into the mystical depths of the enchanted woods to discover the secret at its heart. It harkens back to your childhood, bringing with it all the nostalgia, wonder, and happy memories from that time. It’s a place you will blissfully get lost in, wandering and exploring. But… that’s just the start of what Laamu has to offer.

53

HISTORY BURIED IN THE SANDS

A HAWITTA WITH A VIEW

Laamu Atoll is also known as Haddhunmathi Atoll and is among the few islands in the country that still has relics and remnants leftover from back when Maldives practiced Buddhism. Of course, once Maldives embraced Islam as its official religion back in 1153 AD (or 1193, according to certain copper plate texts) most of the places of worships from the previous religion were looted, destroyed, buried, or converted into mosques. However, some of the buried remains of viharas, stupas and even monasteries can still be found in various islands of Laamu.

One of the more notable landmarks from that era is located in Laamu Gan Mukurimagu and it’s called the “Gamu Haytheli” or “Hawitta”. It used to be a temple for worship but is now buried under a mound of sand so you can’t see any of the historical architecture except for a few stone steps and bricks edging out from under the sand in some areas. According to popular belief, the Hawitta is the last Buddhist temple in Maldives. Visitors can trek up the Hawitta and as you reach the top you will get a breathtaking view of the ocean nearby from above the tree line.

54

GATE TO HELL

Although you can’t see it from the top of Hawitta, there is another landmark nearby that reinforces the enchanted island feel of Laamu: Paree Fengandu or Fairy Pond. Paree Fengandu isn’t the only name the pond has earned over the years. This particular pond is something that many have pondered about over the centuries, hence the various but interesting folklore surrounding it. Situated in Gamu Kuruhinna, it is easily one of the most Instagramed places in Laamu Atoll. Imagine a densely vegetated area of the woods with ancient and huge trees towering over a rough pathway that leads to a small clearing. In the middle of the clearing is a small pond, reflecting the sky above on its placid mirror-like surface. This is the Fairy Pond of Laamu. One of the most peculiar aspects of the pond is that the waters tend to take on a reddish hue near the shallow edge, and fade into a murky dark green as the waters gradually deepen. This could be a reason why the pond has also earned another more sinister sounding

appellation in recent years: Hell-mouth or Hell Hole.

WHERE FAIRIES COME TO FROLIC Legend has it that on certain full moon nights, fairies (or jinnis, depending on who you ask) visit the pond. To take a bath, drink from its magical waters, or ensnare lonely travelers who happen to chance upon the pond and foolishly spend the night at its edge, who knows? The tales vary substantially in the telling. According to residents, the water in the pond used to be fresh. However, after the Tsunami of 2004, the water turned brackish. You can only approach the edge

55

of the lake from one path, as mangroves, massive trees, and fallen branches surround it, blocking off access from all other sides. Another interesting aspect of the pond and one that makes it even more mysterious is the fact that no one has been able to determine its depth so far. Those who have braved the dangers and dived into it equipped with scuba gear and torches have been unable to unravel most of its mysteries. The pond’s underwater views may not be worth mentioning, but the view from the top, especially with a drone, is simply majestic. No wonder Paree Fengandu is such a popular area for aerial photographers.

TOGETHER IN DIGITAL DREAMS

The pristine beaches of the islands, the lagoons, and the forests are all rendered in various shades of blue to orange between sunrise and sunset. Due to lack of light pollution at night and the clean air, the night skies of Laamu are a wonder to behold. On most nights, the galaxy cloud of the Milky Way is easily visible to the naked eye. This makes it a favorite for photographers and videographers looking to create stunning timelapses for their portfolio. Laamu in its entirety, is a photographers dream come true. From something so small as a hermit crab crawling on the beach, leaving a trail behind, to the schools of colorful fish swimming beneath the crystal clear waters, everywhere you look in Laamu is an Instagram moment. If you’d rather just enjoy the peacefulness of nature without bothering to freeze the moment digitally, the sounds of nature’s symphony in the gentle waves or in a bird’s call from the top of a tree branch should act as a soothing balm on your soul.

LET FOOD BE THY MEDICINE‌ Discovering the full beauty of Laamu is a lengthy quest and one that is bound to make intrepid explorers hungry. Which brings us to the mouth-watering cuisines of Laamu. Laamu Golha Riha is the first musttry item on a long list. If you have a palate for fresh homemade spices, then Golha Riha is the delicacy for you. The famous Golha Riha, (basically fish ball curry) is hands down the best cuisine available in Laamu. It is made out of reef fish, squeezed into balls to make a flavorsome curry. Spices are grinded,

following an ancient recipe in a traditional way, which gives the curry the refined and distinct taste it is known for. It can be consumed with roshi (chapatti) or rice. The recipe has been passed down from generation to generation, and makes use of all parts of the fish in the process. You might be able to enjoy Golha Riha in other parts of Maldives, even in Male’ and some resorts, but once you have a taste of the way it is traditionally made in Laamu, anything else will just not satisfy.

HOME IS NOT A PLACE, IT IS PEOPLE

WELCOME TO PLANET SCARIF

The people of Laamu are friendly beyond expectation and their hospitality is renowned. The people tend to live carefree, happy lives, enjoying fishing, socializing with friends, teaming up to play football, and pursuing a very active lifestyle in general. Walking down the narrow roads within the island, you will see women gathering in groups either frying bambukeyo (breadfruit), also known as Maldivian Chips, or making theluli fai, which is Moringa leaves fried with dried chili, onion, garlic and sundried tuna flakes. The sheer joy of children playing in their houses with huge backyards, enjoying picnics with family, eating majaa; another popular delicacy in Maldives made from green mangoes dipped in spicy rihaakuru (fish paste). Women empowerment is very much evident in the island, as most women have jobs and some even occupy decision making level posts.

Travelling down Link Road, either on foot (not recommended) or bike, motorcycle or another vehicle, you are bound to see many acres of land used for agriculture. The islands in Laamu yield many crops ranging from eggplants, tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber, lettuce, chili, and many tropical fruits. Due to the immense land area and good soil, it is no surprise that Laamu is good for agriculture. Many islands in Laamu are famous for the beauty of the farms and the forests. One such island is Baresdhoo. The island became world famous practically overnight after it was used as the location of Planet Scarif in Hollywood blockbuster “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016. It is an uninhabited island with almost impenetrable green vegetation, and known for the tall, evenly spaced palm trees that dot the entire island. Getting marooned on this magical island is a wish for many a Star Wars fan and a bucket list item for many travelers.

TEACH A MAN HOW TO FISH… The call to go fishing flows in the very blood of Maldivians. It is part of being Maldivian. In times past, it was a way of life for most and it still is for some, but for most Maldivians fishing has now become a hobby and leisure sport. The waters of Laamu are just teeming with various challenges to be tackled and is the perfect excuse to pick up the line and hook, or a pole, whichever you prefer. What do you want to catch? Marlins, wahoos, trevally, or giant yellowfin tuna? Not a problem, it’s all possible. Gear up, because every day in Laamu is an adventure waiting to happen.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW Despite the astonishing amount of beauty found travelling around Laamu, many agree that the real beauty of Laamu exist underwater. Even those who enjoy a relaxing snorkel around the reefs of the many islands in Laamu will come across scenes of such beauty that they are left breathless. It’s

always a scenic delight to float over these clear turquoise waters. Still, snorkeling offers just a taste of what the underwater world of Laamu really has to offer. The house reefs of these islands hosts many living corals and entire ecosystems that have to be experienced to believe. The underwater beauty is mesmerizing, even addictive, with hundreds of coral types and beds in every color imaginable, turtle points, anemones, sharks, rays, mantas, and so many other exotic species to see. It is truly a wonder to behold every time.

WHERE I LAY MY HEAD… In recent years, various guesthouses and hotels have cropped up in Laamu, ready to provide comfort and shelter to the weary traveler yearning to experience all that Laamu has to offer. Some places even offer meals with the stay but there are enough restaurants and cafes found all around Laamu for visitors to be adventurous in choosing where to grab a quick breakfast or lunch, or even a romantic fine dining experiences with your significant other.
