2025-2026
Dear Lancer Football Families and Supporters,
We’re grateful you’re part of the Orange Lutheran community and want to thank you for your continued support of our student-athletes, coaches, and programs. At Orange Lutheran, football isn’t just a game — it’s an extension of our mission to help students internalize the Gospel message of salvation in Christ Jesus and to grow into the men God has called them to be.
Representing the red, white, and gold on the football field is both a privilege and a responsibility. It requires commitment, discipline, and sacrifice, not only from our players but also from families, coaches, and supporters who walk alongside them. We are proud of the way our student-athletes pursue excellence, on and off the field, and we’re especially grateful for Coach Rod Sherman and his staff, who faithfully lead this program with purpose, integrity, and a heart for discipleship.
Lancer Football is part of something much bigger. Orange Lutheran is home to nearly 1000 athletes and 27 athletic programs, and we are blessed to compete in the Trinity League, one of the most competitive high school leagues in the nation. Our student-athletes regularly earn recognition at the local, state, and national levels, with many going on to compete in college and beyond. But more importantly, they leave here ready to lead with character, humility, and faith.
Since 1973, the lord has continued to bless Orange Lutheran in powerful ways. As we step into a new season, we remain grounded in our mission, united in tradition, and look forward to what lies ahead. Thank you for being part of the Lancer Community. We are glad you are here.
Go Lancers!

Dr. Jack Preus Mrs. Karen Kekipi Head of School Director of Athletics

Lancer Fans,
Welcome to the 2025 Orange Lutheran Lancer Football Season!
It is a tremendous honor for our program to wear the Red, White, and Gold and to represent our families, our school, and—most importantly—the Lord, through the incredible game of football. At Orange Lutheran Football, our mission goes beyond wins and losses. We strive to partner with parents to help develop student-athletes into champions in every aspect of life. This mission is rooted in our four core values: Love, Accountability, Passion, and Toughness—principles we pursue relentlessly both on and off the field.
Excitement is building as we enter the new season, following last year’s CIF Semi-Final run and our final rankings of #3 in California and #13 in the Nation. This year, the Lancers will again compete on the national stage, with travel games in Florida and Arizona. We’re taking on one of the toughest schedules in the country, and we trust that God will use these challenges to grow resilience, strength, and character in our young men—lessons that will serve them for a lifetime.
I also want to take a moment to thank all who helped make this season possible. A heartfelt thankyou to Mr. Zeilinger and the talented members of the OLu Band, who continue to inspire with their performances, and to our dedicated Cheer and Spirit Squad, whose tireless work in both spirit and competition brings energy and pride to every game. OLu is blessed with a student body rich in diverse talents, and we’re proud to showcase them.
Thank you for your continued support of Orange Lutheran Football. Together, we are striving toward our vision of becoming THE premier Christian college preparatory high school in the nation. I pray for God’s continued blessings on Orange Lutheran and for each opportunity to help our students truly grasp the life-changing message of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Today is a GREAT DAY TO BE A LANCER!
Blessings,
Coach Rod Sherman (‘93)

Family: Kristen (Wife of 23 years), Rory (20, daughter), Melkamu (18, son), Deacon (17, son), and Devin (13, daughter)
Football/Coaching background: Rod enters his fifth season as Head Coach at Orange Lutheran. His first season at OLu was incredible for the Lancers, winning ten games for the first time in a decade while promoting the program-wide core values of Love, Accountability, Passion, and Toughness. The Lancers finished the season winning the CIF Championship for Division 2, the first football championship in 15 seasons, on their way to a Top 10 state ranking.
Prior, he was the Offensive Coordinator at Orange Lutheran for 7 years, the Offensive Coordinator at Valor Christian for 9 years, the Head Coach at Valor for 5 years, and the Head Coach at Arapahoe for 3 years. He has been blessed to have been a part of 11 State Championships as a Coordinator or Head Coach. I was named Head Coach at OLu in May 2021.
Why I Coach: “I coach to use the platform of football to impact the lives and hearts of young men. I believe the game of football is the greatest game in the world; the life lessons taught will hopefully help our young men be the future leaders of our world. I have the best job imaginable, and I get to correlate the lessons of teamwork, positive attitude, unrelenting work ethic, and the importance of the journey into life lessons which will hopefully prove valuable as these young men become Christ-followers, husbands, fathers, and leaders.”

Family: Marc Laulhere (Dad & OLu History teacher and Surf coach)
Coaching background: Kyla is entering her 8th year working with the OLu Football program.
Why I Coach: “Working with our Student-Athletes is simply the best part of my job at OLu. Helping our young men find their confidence in the classroom while instilling work ethic, communication skills, and organizational skills they can take with them to life beyond High School has always been a passion of mine. Being able to do all of this while building lasting relationships centered in and around Christ is what fills my cup.’

Before taking the Offensive Coordinator position at OLu last season, he was the wide receivers coach at OLu for 3 years and then spent 4 years as wide receivers coach/pass game coordinator at Santa Margarita.

Family: Stefanie (Wife, 23 years in June), Logan (Son, Mater Dei class of 2023), now a sophomore at the University of Houston (Track), Luca (Daughter, OLU class of 2027) competing as a member of their girls (Soccer and Track & Field Teams)

Professionally, he played for the Los Angeles and St. Louis Rams, where he was an All-Pro and a Super Bowl XXXIV Champion. He started coaching at Bishop Gorman High School as a Secondary Coach. Other stops along his journey were the University of Oregon as a Defensive Analyst, the Philadelphia Eagles as Assistant Secondary Coach, the University of Notre Dame as a Secondary Coach, Winners Circle Athletics as Head Football Coach and Technical Director, and Villa Park High School as the Secondary Coach. He became Orange Lutheran’s Defensive Coordinator in the spring of 2024.
Why I Coach: “Coaching football isn’t just about teaching fundamentals, techniques, plays, and strategies - it’s about molding young men into a cohesive team and instilling values like discipline, resilience, and teamwork. It is about being a mentor, helping players develop not just as athletes but as people. I coach football because I love seeing the growth and development of my players, both on and off the field. It’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of their journey, to witness their successes, and to help them overcome challenges when faced with adversity. Ultimately, coaching football allows me to make a positive impact on young lives, and that is why I do it.”

Football/Coaching background: Chris is a UCLA Football Alum. Prior to Orange Lutheran, he was the Offensive Line Coach at Mater Dei from 2015 to 2017, a stop that included a CIF, State, and National Championship. He is President of Allegiance Arch Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on Offensive Line development and facilitating the transition to life after sports.
Why I Coach: “I love helping young men understand the ‘why’ aspects of the game of football. Being a part of that lightbulb moment where something finally makes sense is a very rewarding experience. Coaching creates a powerful connection with the athletes that enables me to positively impact every facet of their lives, well beyond football.”

Coaching background: Jojo is an OLu Football Alum ‘19. Upon graduation from OLu he went on to play football at Princeton University. He graduated from Princeton in 2024 and is back at OLu to coach the next generation.
Why I Coach: “Coaching can be incredibly fulfilling because you have the opportunity to guide and support others in reaching their goals, unlocking their potential, and making positive changes in their lives. It’s about fostering growth, building relationships, and seeing the impact I make on kid’s futures. Being fresh out of college I feel like I would be able to relate to the young kids and answer a lot of their questions about the next level while guiding them to be successful young men at the next level and also help them grow their faith in our Lord and Saviour.”

I coach because I get the opportunity to face different challenges and help them overcome them. To help prepare these young men to go into a world that will eat you up, spit you out, and leave you lifeless is why I coach!!!

Why I Coach: “Coaching sports is incredibly rewarding. It’s a chance to mentor young athletes, instill values like teamwork and discipline, and help them grow as people. There’s something special about watching kids grow on and off the field. And what better way to spend a Friday night!”

Working together as a team is the foundation for so much of what we do in life. I am thankful that here at OLu, we point young men to Christ as they journey through this game and onto the road that lies ahead for them.”

Why I Coach: Coaching is another way of staying close to the game while also being able to pass on the things that have helped me get to the next level. It’s a different kind of joy seeing the younger generation learn more about the game we love to play at an early age, it just makes the game that much more fun to play! Football has taught me a lot of skills & techniques that apply to the real world and being a young coach allows me to connect with the players that much better to help them understand through my experiences. The Orange Lutheran Lancer football team has renewed expectations with the start of the 2025 season. Coming off the strongest season in decades, the squad will look to contend for both a Trinity League and CIF Championship with the strong group of returning players combined with a tremendous incoming class.
The Lancers enter the season ranked #24 in the nation, #7 in the state, and #7 in CIF Southern Section, per MaxPreps preseason rankings. The varsity roster also returns over 20 players with significant game experience. After last year’s narrow defeat in the CIF-SS Division 1 semi-finals, OLu is now ready to contend for a championship!
“We are returning 23 players that have significant varsity level experience, in addition to some outstanding younger players and even some Freshmen that will have the opportunity to contribute to our success this year. We have also created strong depth over the offseason program and spring/summer practices.”
The Lancer program will be tested right out of the gate with a season-opening contest in Florida against Miami Northwestern, who starts the year ranked #11 in the nation. That will be one of six games OLu will play against teams currently ranked in the National Top 30. In addition to the game in Florida, the Lancers will travel to face Top 35 foe Basha from Chandler, Arizona.
Playing a challenging schedule has become the norm for the Lancers, as the coaching staff believes growth can occur most in the face of challenge.
The 2025 team has multiple strengths that it will bring to the field, starting with the defensive front. Five Lancer DL have Division One offers, led by returning All-Trinity League players Auma Jennings and Marcus Fakatou. This group was one of the most consistent last season and will need to be strong again for the Lancers to achieve their goals. The second and third levels of the defense also return numerous players who contributed significantly last season. The linebacking corps will be anchored by returning starters Christian Panapa and Mason Reyes, with fellow Senior Hunter Schnakenberg moving from Safety down to Nickel to bring additional speed to the defense. The secondary is another position of strength, with returning starters Matthew Zapien, Jackson Perez, CJ Washington, and experienced Sophomores Anhor and King Johnson all combining to make this one of the most athletic Lancer secondaries in recent memory.
Offensively, it will all start up front for the Lancers, with multiple Division One linemen joining forces to win in the trenches. Seniors Sam Utu and Brandon Garcia will join with Junior Lucas Rhoa to form an outstanding trio of returning starters. Fellow Senior Jackson Venator will join this group with a strong group of Juniors and Sophomores, providing strong depth for this important unit. OLu also has some outstanding returning skill players that will add explosiveness to the offense. Running backs Jae Nembhard and Sean Morris Jr. are both incredibly talented backs who can both catch and run the football and will be versatile weapons for OC Coach Austin Pettis

(‘07). The wideout corps is the strongest in many years, featuring returning varsity starters Markus Kier, Nico Bland, and Chris Flores. Multiple quarterbacks have had outstanding offseasons and will compete for the starting spot during fall camp.
Multiple specialists are also returning, including All-Southern California kicker Aiden Migirdichian, long snapper Konner Hawkins, and punter Kaden Hawkins.
“Last year was the first year with two new coordinators; the level of scheme that our players absorbed was noteworthy. Now, however, we have had an entire offseason to fully implement and install the Lancer system and I look for us to be more multiple, more technically sound, and execute at a higher level. Our coaches and players have worked very hard in the offseason to develop situational confidence and our overall football IQ, and we are excited to demonstrate that growth upon the beginning of our season. We have had as good of an offseason as I ever could have dreamed of!”
The season kicks off August 23 when the Lancers travel to Florida on #11 nationally ranked Miami Northwestern. This unique travel experience will set the tone for the season ahead.
“I absolutely love the young men I have the privilege of coaching. They are outstanding football players, but more importantly, they are wonderful young men. We desire for OLu football to be a transformational program in the hearts and lives of our student-athletes while we are pursuing National Championships on the field. These young men are Lancers - they love each other, they are good students, they want to become the best versions of themselves, and they are really good football players! God has blessed us with these guys!”

MESSAGE TO YOUR FAMILY
I want to thank my parents, they have sacrificed so much more than I can ask for so I can have the chance to live my dream. Even when I doubted what was happening or wanted to stop they encouraged me and prayed for my path to open up and reminded me that my time is coming and I just have to keep working. Through the hour and a half long drives to school and back to games out of state to thrift store hours they have always stuck by my side and helped me find my way in life. I also want to thank my brothers and sister who helped me get too and from school some days and showed up to my games. And to zypher my middle brother who showed me the way on the field, showed me the secrets to success and pushed me harder and harder. I always thought he was always trying to bring me down or show me I will never be as good as him no matter what. I come to relive he just wanted me to be better than he was and get to the places he never got the chance to go too. Thank you to my dad and zypher for showing me and teaching me what true strength is like on the field. “No matter how you feel no body cares work harder and bring the team with you to success”
